Hope you all saved all the daylight you wanted, ’cause it’s over. Extra hour for late nite partying tonight! So turn those clocks back and let’s celebrate!
With this free gift of time I would like to share what is making me so happy tonight. Virginia Democrats are in the midst of unrolling an unprecedented get out the vote effort for this Tuesday, when we elect our new legislature. There are not so many elections in ’07, so our gains will be seen as symbolic progress for the national party.
Yes, I know, Blue Dog Dems, traitor Dems, et al, but we are talking about a conservative state that is moving in a good direction at a fairly rapid clip. Two consecutive Dem governors, for the Senate we are on track to replace the Repub Warner with the Dem Mark Warner, and the outcome of the presidential election in Virginia is now uncertain—our electoral votes do not automatically go to Thug-in-Chief Giuliani (R-Terra/Be afraid!) or other subpar candidate. From WaPo:
“A win in Virginia will send a powerful message around the nation about next year and the outcome of the 2008 elections,” Sen. James Webb (D-Va.) said while soliciting Democratic volunteers to help get out the vote.
Did I mention how much I adore Webb, who is front and center in the Senate efforts to delegitimize an attack on Iran, establish a new Truman Commission on war contracting scandals, and spare our military from being sent back to the hellhole that is Iraq before they have had adequate rest? Talk about supporting the troops, this is it.
A particularly splendid victory would be in my own district where incumbent Jeannemarie Devolites Davis, wife of Congressman Tom Davis [who unlike Waxman, found nothing worth investigating] is pitted against the seasoned and reasonable Chap Peterson for State Senate. The Davis campaign has been predictably nasty and a victory would be very sweet. It’s all about get out the vote, and we are so working on it.
And, at least in Virginia, we are finally beginning to get the winning coalition together:
Labor unions, who view Virginia’s elections as a test run for next year’s presidential race, are also flooding the state. The AFL-CIO is mobilizing 150 union volunteers in Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia and Roanoke…also getting help from the Human Rights Campaign…and the Sierra Club.
In a week where we have experienced many setbacks and disappointments—and as one who works in Russia I bow to no one in my capacity to be depressed about how the world is going—I do see signs of hope. If states like Alaska and Virginia can turn blue so quickly, we might just make it after all.

Hi Egregious!
Hey egregious. I’m off to read about clocks.
What time is it, anyway?
EG!
Told ‘em downstairs.
Tom Davis’ wife…
**SPEW ALERT**
Ya’ll have fun diddling with your clocks… :P
I love your optimism!
Good evening dear friends. Anyone want some very cute cookies?
Time to say hello! And a big shoutout to all you pups who made the meetups today, bet that was fun.
I was so looking forward to the extra hour of sleep until I realized the doggies don’t wear watches…
seems their clocks are in their stomachs.
GO VIRGINIA
Just a quick link for any newly arriving pups: pics from socal FDL get together at http://www.flickr.com/photos/pbatfdl/
Hi, eg.
OldCoastie @ 12
This is why I feed them at night.
OTOH I play with them in the morning, so I suppose it works out the same. *bounce*bounce*bounce* *flings dummy on my face* *bounce*bounce*bounce*…
EPUd from downstairs: wigwam @ 259
I’m only in my 40’s. Still confused. Do I set the bedroom clock one hour AHEAD or one hour BACK?
mine, unfortunately get fed twice a day… the boy has problems if I don’t…
Aw, those cookies are soo cute Tex, it’s a shame to ..snarf, mmmm, gobble …eat them.
TexBetsy @ 18
fall BACK…
TexBetsy @ 18
Spring forward, fall back…
Burnspbesq, we missed you at the Cheesecake Factory, but your directions were perfect! Here’s one of the desserts you missed, which would be killer with Betsy’s cookies.
Glad you’re enjoying them Persi.
eg, your saturday nite posts always pick up my spirits
thanks, eg
eGreg, when you get settled, we’ll have a gathering upyonder north. It’s quite amazing to finally meet people you’ve known for so long, innit?
And don’t know if Demi’s still here, but she posted some here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/17697978@N04/

Loo Hoo. @ 23
Excellent choice. I concur.
Mommybrain @ 26
Hey y’all. I apologize that I couldn’t make it. Please keep me in mind for next time.
sorry, tex, loohoo gave me a hot fudge sunday (i was jonesing for some dessert) downstairs
can i save a cookie or two for later?
TexBetsy @ 10
I know Webb has been a disappointment on a few things, but I’ll take 50 more of him over DiFi any day of the week.
I bow to egregious.
I did not know you were a constituent of the execrable Double-Dee! I really hope she’s defeated Tuesday — her flyers about Chap’s consultants helping Muslims and lesbians get elected were quite horrible.
Not to mention disclosing his personal information in another flyer, and leaving door-hangers in minority neighborhoods last week exhorting voters to VOTE TODAY.
She’s just like her husband. I hope they both lose, and big.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 31
Ahmen!!
There is a big difference between “imperfect” and “sleeping with the enemy and doing their laundry.”
TexBetsy @ 10
bears!
teddy bears, teddy
TeddySanFran @ 35
Not just any bears, TEDDY bears!
Check out some of the things people said about Daylight Savings Time back in 1967.
all right, pups… gotta get some sleep…
I sure liked meeting everyone today – we will have to do that again soon!
g’nite oc – sleep well
OldCoastie @ 39
Yup! Agreed. And slouching toward my bedtime, too…
Eureka Springs @ 32
And I curtsey to you, ES. Learned how to do a deep curtsey as a child. Not too much use for it these days.
Night Coastie. Night PB.
Loo Hoo. @ 23
The other alternative, which I blanked out on at the time, would have been to get ice cream from the Haagen-Dazs store at Fashion Island and sit by one of the fountains. Despite the heavy aroma of unearned wealth, Fashion Island is a nice place to kill an afternoon.
egregious @ 42
i learned how during ballet lessons. When I went to charm school, I had bowing nailed.
Well, I shall join the exodus… Aloha Oe!!!
g’nite ct
Night CT.
Night, all! Set your clocks backwards, not forwards :-O
g’nite pb, spring forward, fall back :)
Aloha Oe, CT!

The first use of “terrorism”
from Millard Fillmore’s Bathtub by Ed Darrell
Did you ever wonder when the term “terrorism” first appeared, and against what terror it was aimed?
George Bush and Dick Cheney will not like the answer. François Furstenberg gives the history of the term in an opposite-editorial page piece in the New York Times, “Bush’s Dangerous Liaisons.”
http://timpanogos.wordpress.co…..terrorism/
Here’s a hint: The phrase referred to governmental the ruling party’s actions against its own people, originally.
Furstenberg is a professor of history at the University of Montreal, and a scholar of George Washington.
wigwam, we missed you too. We all concurred that you are one of the great posters here. (Just read your difi info). We discussed how many great posters and commenters we are privileged to enjoy here, it is amazing!
And we discussed how lucky we are to “know” egregious.
What a team, huh? Next time, wigwam. It would certainly be our pleasure.
When I was younger, the primary significance of the last night of Daylight Savings Time was that the bars were open an extra hour.
Now … An Extra Hour of Sleep!!! Woo-Hoo!!!
TeddySanFran, thanks for the link; when I saw the reference to Tom Davis’s wife, I thought, “Please someone mention her Malkinesque intrusiveness…”
Yes, people use families as props in political ads. No, this does *not* fucking A-well mean it’s okay to *post* their personal contact information (what’s the message, “Call Chap Peterson’s daughter and ask if she knows her dad supports liberals and terrorists!!1!”? Who. The. Fuck. Does. This. SHIT? Oh, simple answer: Your 2007 Republican Party, activists and leaders alike).
Also, I gotta admit, I like Webb’s efforts to warn Bush away from war with Iran, but I also gotta say, that warning has to come with a message of “If you invade Iran, you batshit loon, we’re going to impeach you so fast your fucking head’s going to spin. You and your little VP, too. Because you’re fucking nuts, mmmKAY?”
Not that I expect Webb to put that in writing (cue Joe Lieberman’s WATB pissing and moaning about “civility”), but I expect that sentiment to come across on some level.
On the other hand, I *do* expect Webb to go all Bruce Lee on the Senate GOP if they continue to vote as a blockheaded bloc to protect the War Criminal-in-Chief…
Wouldn’t want him to fuck up his hand on Trent Lott’s hair, though.
Suzanne @ 45
Charm school Suzanne? I bet that came in real handy in your police work.
OldCoastie @ 39
Good night, OC, and I’ll do my best to get my pics up tomorrow night.
I have a gift for y’all. There are a bunch more to watch.
nite peanut butter
nite old coastie
G’night OC. G’night PB. Hi Burnsie.
wigwam @ 34
707!
persi, it was semi-handy back when i was a model as a teen… and knowing how to sit down while wearing a micromini-skirt really never came in handy working patrol.
egregious @ 42
I had to learn how to curtsey for a role in the chorus in The King and I as one of the concubines. We had a lot of fun with that. But one of the old gestures that really is quite interesting in terms of paying respect when it’s due. As is the timing of bowing in japan.
Loo Hoo. @ 54
Hey, Loo Hoo, thanks.
I’m determined to get to the next one, and might have gotten to the one today had I been able to drive a total of 500 miles on four hours of sleep — I couldn’t. (And therre were other very seriously competing priorities that had come up.)
I’m so glad it went well. This community has so much to do. Wow!
It was a treat to meet everyone who came to Wahoo’s today. Seven new friends in one day … how cool is that?
Renee in Ohio @ 38
lol
Suzanne @ 25
Thanks Suzanne! Happy to be here.
burnspbesq @ 66
One would hope that we’re all old friends by now.
Suzanne @ 63
Charm school graduate, teenage model, charming, model police officer, good mother, fabulous moderator, you have many strings to your bow Miz Suzanne.
TeddySanFran @ 67
According to the AP stylebook, it’s actually called “daylight-saving time.”
In case anyone was wondering…
:::blushing:::
thanks persi
burnspbesq @ 55
When I was in high school, our state had a referendum on whether or not to go on daylight saviings time. There was a lot of corporate opposition, running ads on local TV and radio stations saying things like, “Standard time is God’s time.” and “If God wanted the sun to be straight up at one o’clock, he’d have made it that way.” But the all time winner was the lady who called in to a local radio station and complained that the extra hour of sunlight would burn up her lawn.

neurophius @ 71
Okay! You’ve brought up one of my pet peeves. A “high school teacher” is a school teacher on drugs. A “high-school teacher” is someone who teaches high school. Damn it!!!
TEddy, it’s not j u s t w r o n g , it’s french.
TexBetsy @ 69
Sure feels like it, huh? And everyone was much like I expected, except Old Coastie. I always thought she was a man. I pictured “him” looking much like I picture OKK.
wigwam @ 73
a spew warning wudda helped, wigwam
wigwam @ 34
Oh that last bit would be a great thing to have published in a letter to the editor, Wigwam! Not that they would, but it is just perfect for her.
Chris, are you new hereabouts? Please keep up the comments.
loohoo, thank goodness, i thought i was the only one who was surprised to see that OC was female – i was so sure OC was male
Suzanne @ 84
She said something a week or so ago about being a woman.
burnspbesq @ 66
VERY cool.
wigwam @ 73
What? You never had the ‘daylight saving will fade the curtains faster’ argument.
The state that I live in has had 2 referenda over daylight saving, both of which rejected it and pretty soundly at that. Still, our government has forced us into a 3-year ‘trial’. Personally I don’t care because I have air-conditioning but I remember when I lived in a small unairconditioned unit. It was a very hot, but not unusual, summer. I was studying at Uni so I was often home during the day, sitting in the dark with all the windows closed and the curtains drawn until the sun went down. It was pretty horrible. I’d hate to have to live like that again.
persiflage @ 70
Ain’t it the truth?! And demi reports that she’s great fun as well. And lives in Wonderland.
TexBetsy @ 85
dang, how the devil did i miss that (shaking head)

Where the hell is the FREEDOM in all of this?
burnspbesq @ 66
Same, burns. Well worth the trip down.
Our big get-together is tomorrow at lunchtime.
Gotta be up early tomorrow, good night pups!
Sleep well egregious. Thanks so much for your optimistic posts.
Old Coastie said she took the name because when she first started reading FDL, she was sure all of the commenters were in their early twenties. She felt older, and wanted the “kids” to know that she was coming from a different perspective.
sleep well, eg and thanks
persiflage @ 87
In those days, very few in Minnesota had airconditioners, and those who had them were considered to be well … lacking in … Oh, how would Garrison Keilor put it?
Night, egregious. Sweet dreams!
Loo Hoo. @ 88
Plus she’s a stealth Republican, just for the fun of it. What more could we ask for?
persiflage @ 100
One commenter might ask for handcuffs.
As a kid, we never had a/c. We had what my dad called WDD60 – windows down doing 60
Queensland also refuses to go on DST, it will fade the curtains, screw up the cows, etc.
The real arguments come from those who live in the far north where they are close enough to the equator that days are pretty much the same length all year round and those in the far west who are actually west of South Australia which is 1/2 hour behind the east coast (don’t get me started on Aussie time zones), anyway it’s a real pain in the ass for the vast majority here in the SE corner (Brisbane) as we are an hour behind Sydney and Melbourne even though they are more or less due south. It is also annoying have sunrise at 0430.
Since 90% of the population is in the SE corner I think we should go to DST but I, quite literally, don’t get a vote.
wigwam @ 98
Poverty? The one thing that money can’t buy.
one commenter already did, tex
persiflage @ 100
A picture of her mother-of-the-bride outfit.
The meddling mother of the bride has not selected a Mother of the Bride outfit yet.
Loo Hoo. @ 106
Absolutely. Actually, now that I think of it, we never saw a picture of the bridal gown. Suzanne?
Extra hour of sleep notwithstanding, tomorrow’s to-do list is long and daunting, so I shall take my iPod and a book and retire. Pleasant dreams, everyone.
Nighty night Burns.
I’m not allowed to have a picture – the ungrateful bride think i would share it with people and ruin the surprise
LooHoo @ 83: not particularly new; just not particularly regular (I’m usually good for one snarky/foul-mouthed mini-rant every week or so, with a couple other occasional gripes/cracks/notes of support)… though if my ego learns that there’re treats (i.e., encouragement like yours) to be found here, it’ll drive me back ;-)
Yep, there it goes; I just caught it buying an EZ-Pass…
g’nite burns
night burns.
Looks like Tuesday’s debate didn’t damage Hillary according to Newsweek.
persiflage @ 108
But we did see a stunning contender. It was a beautiful thing for someone like me who loves all things sparkely!
burnspbesq @ 109
Oh sure, he didn’t mention the Iphone everyone was drooling over.
Great, Chris! Look forward to more of your rants.

loohoo, when i get pics of the dress (probably not until the wedding unless i can remember who the designer was), it has random sparklie bits, very subtle and classy yet bling
Loo Hoo. @ 116
It was so beautiful that I kept the window open on my puter for days, just to have something lovely to look at when I needed a boost.
Suzanne @ 120
It was the classiest wedding dress I have ever seen.
Who Sounds Like Rudy?
by Big Tent Democrat
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r…..248778/603
Does this candidate sound like Rudy?
There is no doubt that Iran poses a threat. It has armed terrorists beyond its borders, maintains an illicit nuclear program, and its leaders have issued belligerent threats that are a concern to us all. . . . We do need to tighten sanctions on the Iranian regime, particularly on Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, which sponsors terrorism far beyond Iran’s borders.
This guy?
U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama suggested Friday that the United States one day might have to launch surgical missile strikes into Iran and Pakistan to keep extremists from getting control of nuclear bombs.
And so on. It so happens that I agree with a lot of what I am quoting from Obama. I strongly disagree with any calls for resolutions of any type from the Senate on Iran. Kyl-Lieberman was a horrible mistake.
But when Obama said Hillary was like Rudy on Iran, that was a lie. It would be a lie to say Obama is like Rudy. Here’s my new request from our Presidential canidates – I am setting the bar low – no more bald faced lying. Be more nuanced in your misstatements.
Hello :)
I post here periodically, and I know how passionate you all are to stop the torture.
Some of you might remember that my husband, Dan, was a POW during Vietnam who tortured by his North Vietnamese captors. He suffered from his injuries for over thirty years, until fatal heart attack two years ago.
While there is breath in my body, I must speak out to stop the nomination of Michael Mukasey. I’m a Kossack and today I posted a diary “We Have Five Days”, encouraging people to phone or fax or email Senators Schumer or Feinstein. I reply, some truly generous Kossacks have made sure that I can go and lobbying the committee in Washington on Wednesday.
Which brings me here. Any advice any of you would care to offer would be greatly appreciated. Any contacts you might have that I could talk with would be welcome.
I hope I can be Dan’s voice to change hearts.
With gratitude,
Heather
persi, i figure if i can remember the name of the designer.. it was one of those with an “&” in the name iirc, then i can find the dress and do a linkie.
i’ve outsmarted that girl from the day she was born and she’s not going to win this one either (laughing)
have i ever mentioned that when she was born, she was flopped on my tummy before her cord was cut – and she pissed all over me – literally.
was my welcome to motherhood
Chacounne @ 124
lets start with a link to your diary :)
Loo Hoo. @ 115
key graf:
this was the contender that did not make the cut
Woops … sorry about that
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/11/3/202947/550
Thanks very much.
Chacounne @ 124
God speed and thank you so much for going!
thanks, so you are going to DC?
Thanks Heather.
Thanks very much.
Yes, Suzanne, I’m off to DC, to tell Dan’s story face to face, and try to change minds and hearts.
Chacounne @ 124
OMG, Heather. You make me know how real this whole torture issue is. I am so sorry for your loss of Dan, and it is clear how much you love him. I wrote DiFi last night with a comment from ThinkingSoutherner on last night’s late night thread. She is living with her family in Saudi Arabia and had special thoughts on torture. I think it was at about #135.
Best of all.
If you are going to DC to meet with the congresscriters, make sure you bring a framed photo of your husband in his uniform so they have the face of a tortured person to look at.
Suzanne @ 125
Ha! At least she let you know where you stood (or lay) right from the first minute. A mischievious mother would include that story in a wedding-day speech.
Loo Hoo,
Thanks very much. I will look it up. The attitude that if they aren’t American they don’t matter makes me heartsick. We are all part of one family, the human family.
Hugs,
Heather
Suzanne @ 128
Heavenly, just heavenly.
That is an excellent idea, Suzanne. Thank you.
Hugs,
Heather
Loo Hoo. @ 96
mmm… time for a little warm milk…
you’re close Loo Hoo… I started commenting at dKos during Katrina and there was a lot of misinformation floating around about CG operations… the commenters DID seem young over there (but I could be mistaken)… the OC just stuck when I came on over here… I was kinda used to it by then…
and seriously, I do believe I’ve been “out” as a female for a couple years now… but it doesn’t get mentioned too often…
;-)
Chacounne @ 139
And get someone to go with you with a video camera. People there might find it harder to brush you off if it’s being recorded.
Suzanne @ 102
Too slow for black leather interiors
;>)
Heather, also, make a list of the key things that you want to make sure you say, of how it impacted him for the rest of his life.
I would include a line similar to “my husband was tortured trying to keep our country torture free – and not so that you can sit in congress and approve torture… or something to that effect
toddling back to bed… g’night pups…
Another excellent idea, persiflage.
Hugs,
Heather
sorry about the xx/xy OC – sleep well
hey db
But Teddy, could Obama or Edwards take out the republican candidate in the general election? That is all that really counts. And I’ll answer my own question regarding Obama. No. They’ll use Osama, madrasa, and whatever else is dog whistle proof on that one real quick.
Absolutely, Suzanne :)
Chacounne,
Hugs and I will go read your diary.
My friends’ dads, several of them, were badly hurt on the Bataan Death March. It affected them the rest of their lives.
That’s why I can’t understand anyone who approves of torture…
darkblack @ 142
what is that? a 67 Chevy Malibu?
’s OK Suzanne… who knew it would cause such confusion?
If I am going to be asleep before time catastrophically gets interrupted and starts repeating itself, I’d better get started.
I’m bringing the laptop to our meet-up, but no idea if we’ll have a signal.
Night all!
night, night Old Coastie
Hugs,
Heather
g’nite tex and thanks for the cookies
Thanks, Margot.
I completely agree.
Hugs,
Heather
Heather, I wish you well on your mission. I don’t have any specific advice to offer other than to have the courage to speak the truth as you know it to be, and not let yourself be intimidated or feel that it is inappropriate to make those in power feel discomfort. I offer my moral support. Although I have no direct link to torture such as you have, I feel you will speak for me and for all of us.
persiflage @ 104
When I came to California, forty years ago, I met a lot of people who, indeed, bought poverty … it got them laid. No shit.
Charlie was a hippie living in a van in parking lot #13. When he parents died leaving him his share of a large chunk of north county San Diego, he bought a real house. But his parties didn’t suffer a bit.
Of course, he bacame a Reaganoid who had utter contempt for the lower classes except for the Guatemalan workers he employed in the vineyards he purchased in Northern California. “These poor people only want to make a living for their families … Why should the government deprive them of this opportunity?”
It was a bit more than my gag reflexes could handle after listening to him bitch about “welfare queens,” and watching Caesar Chavez’s marches against “immigrant scabs.”
OldCoastie @ 150
‘70 Nova.
Hey S.
Heather, have you checked out StopTortureNow. They may have some ideas for you.
Heather, if you are still here, look to see if you have a picture of him when he was released, perhaps getting off the plane or some other photo that will convey the emotional connection to the congresscritter.
Night, OC. Thanks for the correction.
wigwam @ 156
He might have bought some poverty but he sure traded it in for a swisher model when da money came rolling in.
Suzanne @ 159
Will they allow framed photos on a plane these days?
Margot @ 149
This is reality that the mainstream people, both media and person-to-person need to hear. And, after the war, we prosecuted and convicted and imprisoned those Japanese guys, who waterboarded American and Phillipino prisoners. They were convicted at war-crimes trials.
But now, Bush, Diane Feinstein, Charles Schumer, Joseph Lieberman, and all of the Republican Senators want to confirm as Attorney General of the United States of America, the second highest law-enforcement office on the planet, a person who doubts that waterboarding (aka, water-torture) is really torture. My bad, I have no way of knowing whether or not he thinks that. I only know that he has said that he is unable to determine whether or not waterboarding is torture, in spite of a number of offers to show him.
darkblack @ 157
Which engine?
ES, I’ve not flown since 9/11 – not because i’m scared – poor is more like it… but also because i refuse to give up my rights to search and seizure without probable cause. screw em, i’ll drive
i’m the wrong person to ask – i dont’ know
neurophius @ 155
I spent a couple of months doing a psychology placement at a centre for victims of torture. We had a lot of migrants from Chile, many of whom had been political refugees. That opened my eyes to the long-term physical and psychological impacts of torture. It was the hardest job I ever did.
neurophius,
Thank you so much; moral support is important too.
Hugs,
Heather
Suzanne @ 165
I only fly international.. Just wont fly if at all possible for the same reasons you listed. It’s a horrible experience from start to finish these days.
Oh, my. Via C&L we have this Princess Sparkle Pony update on how the Turks feel about Condi.
wigwam @ 164
It was a feature vehicle in a film…Those don’t usually have big motors, you dub in the big block sound during post. I’d like it with a 396ci.
Amen, Wigwam @ 163
Hugs,
Heather
Heather, if you have any photos of the physical injuries, like the toenails you mentioned, stick them in their faces. The worse the better, to Shock and Awe the prim and proper Senate.
Seamus, I’ll have to see if they show in any of the photographs.
Hugs,
Heather
Loo Hoo. @ 54
Wow. I’ve simply got to say that you guys make my day. And, I pass the best of it (and other stuff) along to a small mailing list of friends who seem to appreciate it.
IMHO, the best we can do as individuals is to contribute to a “climate of opinion.”
They throw their stones. We cast our pebbles. But there are a hell of a lot more of us.
Right, wigwam. Especially when the rest of America wakes up.
We Fight Back

Chacounne @ 174
His VA medical records should have some if you can find them.
Kevin Drum complied this, with a nod to FDL:
persiflage @ 166
Pers,
What our government is doing in our name is such ugly shit that it makes me unable to sleep. My only solice is that some day they’ll be brought to justice.
But, today on Mark Greene’s program on Air America, Arianna Huffington said that she doubted that any of the top three democrats would prosecute members of the Bush Administration.
I’m a one-issue guy, and bring-’em-to-justice is my issue. At this point, I don’t care about the other stuff. Bring those motherfucking bastards to justice. Then we’ll take care of poverty.
Eureka Springs @ 178
And do what you do with a smile
;>)
Chacounne @ 133
Isn’t the committee vote scheduled for Tuesday?
Seamus @ 179:
Sadly, because his missions were covert “he was never there” VA records aren’t available.
TeddySanFran
The vote is scheduled for Thursday, is my understanding.
Hugs,
Heather
Heather, you might wanna double check that – i think Teddy is right that they are Tuesday.
Hmmmm , I sure will.
Thanks for the heads up.
Hugs,
Heather
You can’t beat Kevin Drum’s list, Punaise
Although if you tried, you might get ensnared in a conga line
Unless, of course, you’re wearing a high hat.
This is reassuring:

Thompson Adviser Has Criminal Past
By Matthew Mosk
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, November 4, 2007; Page A01
Republican presidential candidate Fred D. Thompson has been crisscrossing the country since early this summer on a private jet lent to him by a businessman and close adviser who has a criminal record for drug dealing.
Thompson selected the businessman, Philip Martin, to raise seed money for his White House bid. Martin is one of four campaign co-chairmen and the head of a group called the “first day founders.” Campaign aides jokingly began to refer to Martin, who has been friends with Thompson since the early 1990s, as the head of “Thompson’s Airforce.”
Loohoo, I wonder if mr air force was a tree top flyer back in the day doing his part to bring a little green to america.
Dang … you are absolutely right about the date. I checked the committee website. Sheesh there are days I am a complete idiot and this is one of them. I’ll see what I can do to change arrangments.
Hugs,
Heather
punaise @ 180
I can’t read this. I’ll trust you to tell me how to vote, punaise.
just glad you caught it in time, heather – wudda totally sucked getting there the day after
Pers,
What our government is doing in our name is such ugly shit that it makes me unable to sleep.
———————————————-
It’s not about whether it would be divisive or not either. The real issue for me is – what lessons do children take from this? That it’s OK to lie, cheat, steal, cause untold suffering in an innocent country and generally behave like a prick because they see powerful people doing it and walking away unscathed. We can’t just tell children that bad people get into big trouble, when the evidence to the contrary is right before their bright, shiny, curious little eyes.

Ray Gun. A splendid new one?

I so agree!
db, i almost said green and white but backed off…
makes me wonder what kinda seed money he is expected to raise
I hope ET’s concert went well tonight.
darkblack @ 170
I’d never seen a large engine for a Nova. One of my very meek friends had the most bad-ass Chevelle ever made, which his wife took every time she ran away with yet another tennis coach. Sigh!
Suzanne @ 200
We were wondering about that this afternoon too. Love ET.
Suzanne
You are so right

Loo Hoo. @ 197
Nothing so grand…An old concept, but thank you, LH.
Suzanne @ 199
I love the quote from the comm director: ‘“There’s not a campaign in the world that has the ability to research every one of its supporters going back more than 20 years,” Harris said.‘
…Would you believe 24?
;>)
Very meek, indeed, wigwam.
loohoo, i hope he stops by but doubt it… it was also his birthday and i’m sure he is celebrating – hopefully a successful premier of his music in addition to his b/day.
Suzanne @ 206
He did say that was going to be an after-party. I hope it all went well for him. In a way, it must be like having a child grow up. You created it, nurtured it, loved it and then you have to pass it to other people to present to the world.
db, is that the dui arrest that AGAG hid back in his running for governor days?
wigwam @ 201
Biggest you’d get without a lot of metalwork was the 396…Pal of mine stuffed a 454 into a Javelin SST once, car burned rubber in three gears and would kill you quick when the light went green.

It’s the one he got him out of jury duty for in Texas so it wouldn’t be revealed.
thanks, db, that’s the one i was thinking of and could only remember that it was hid
Before people start drifting away, I have a question. If you have a personal blog, what software do you use and are you happy with it?
Suzanne @ 210
‘He’s a bad boy, a naughty boy…A naughty bad boy’

persi, i use the blogger software in blogspot – its free and was the same that jane was using when i finally got up my nerve to start my own.
Thanks very much everyone, for your help and your kindness.
With gratitude,

Good luck to you Heather, go get em tiger!
Well, whenever our ET comes back, here’s a birthday cake for him…
Persiflage,
Thanks for the link :)
Hugs,

Suzanne,
I don’t have any photos of those days, sadly, but I’ll look to see if I have another that might be appropriate.

what’s that nursery rhyme but when he was bad he was horrid?
Suzanne @ 213
Thanks Suzanne. I’m toying with getting a blog, somewhere to put rants and funny stuff that I want to share but that’s too long to put in a blog comment. The ip I use is now offering blog space so, maybe, if I get movitated a bit more …
Loo Hoo. @ 216
loohoo, hope its ok i snuck a peak – that is gorgeous.
Suzanne @ 217
Off the top of my head it was ablut a she and went “when she was good she was very very good and when she was bad she was wicked” or something like that.
There was a little girl,
Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good, she was very, very, good,
But when she was bad, she was horrid.
The little girl with the little curl.
;>)
darkblack @ 222
So girlio!
for some reason, i always associate that nursery rhyme with db’s depictions of boosh and make it, as i did above, he instead of she.
Ha, in looking for that rhyme and found a site with parody nursery rhymes like :
MARY HAD A LITTLE LAMB
Her father shot it dead.
Now it goes to school with her,
Between two hunks of bread.
and
There was a little girl who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good, she was very, very good.
But when she was bad…….. She got a fur coat, jewels, a waterfront condo, and a sports car.
Suzanne @ 224
Easy enough to change, S. – ‘There was a little churl…’

A contention with which I wholeheartedly agree.

But Obama and Edwards do worse against Giuliani according to that same poll.
Why are the American people allowing this horseshit to continue? I cannot understand this…
loohoo, so many times i would think that this would be what would finally get the american people pissed off enough – yet no matter what the this is, it doesn’t happen.
i am ashamed of my government and i am also ashamed of the silence of my countrymen.
time for me to head off to bed, g’nite all
Me too, nighters, Suzanne.
Bonne nuit, Suzanne and FDL.
Night Suzanne, Loo Hoo, DB. Guess I’ll head off myself.
Byee!
OT/personal:
I had a very good night, for the most part. One of my dearest friends is getting married next week, and he chose me (of all people) to organize the bachelor party, which happened tonight.
I got suggestions from a lot of people – go do a bar crawl; go to a strip club; go shoot guns; go race mini F-1 race cars; all the macho shit.
What I did was rent a 50-foot ketch and invite a couple dozen of his closest friends for a 3-hour cruise on SF Bay. Just us, sailing and catching up on stuff, having some snacks and wine. We had a toast to the groom as we passed beneath the GGBridge, then we turned back and motored home (it’s a beautiful night, but there was no wind).
What I got out of this is that it was so much better to ignore the *spectacle* that we live in and just sit in a quiet place and talk to each other. We’re a wide group of friends and do many things and don’t get to see each other often, and this was a perfect night to do what we all need to do from time to time – connect.
Even though you’ll never see this – here’s to you, Chuck! Thank you for letting me do this.

What would people think of getting former Rep. Paul “Pete” McCloskey to run against McNerney in the primary?
Or perhaps as an independent in the General Election???
In a three way vote he might actually succeed because he drew about 1/3rd of the Republican vote against Pombo. I would think that McCloskey would appeal to many independants and Democrats frustrated with McNerney as well.
Although a Republican, McCloskey is definitely anti-Iraq War, pro-Choice and very much an environmentalist. He supported the Impeachment of Richard Nixon, the first Republican Congressman to do so.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_McCloskey
Blender, so cool. Really a nice way to go off into a new life for the groom. Much healthier than a pornfest.
Cinnamonape, keep us posted. Sounds interesting. McNerney is a major pisser-offer.
Sleep
Good morning, I think.
[yawn…….]
Ok lights on. Good morning! Dang it’s early.
Hello Egregious – did you get any sleep?
Not completely OT – when I first reported to a Marine infantry battalion at Camp Lejeune in 1980, my First Sergeant was a Vietnam vet who had served in Jim Webb’s platoon. This Marine idolized Jim Webb, and Webb did regularly look him up when he passed through our parts of the world. Webb was evidently a superb small unit combat leader who really did believe that his Marines, no matter what their socio-economic backgrounds, were truly his brothers.
Morning, egregious. I think you didn’t sleep much last night.
Morning, folks (if anyone besides me is awake at this ungodly hour). It’s frosty in Upstate NY this morning. Have spent this weekend so far trying to clear my head of all the garbage from last week. Tomorrow, as they say, we start over again.
Nice to know what the goal is every Monday morning…we may feel we are not making much progress, but every day it’s a little something.
Hey OkiDave, Lindy!
OkiDave, thanks for your story about Webb. I have the great pleasure to know him from the campaign, he is the real thing.
The key to sanity on Saturday nights is to get a good long nap *before* late late goes up. Then it all works. Three hours before, five hours after, makes me feel pretty good.
Of course this is on the east coast. Don’t know how that’s gonna work when I make the jump at the end of January.
yes, as egregious says…not a sprint but a marathon.
well, i’m glad you were here, egregious. Last week’s news was…disheartening. A little heart goes a long way.
Egregious — I’m sorry I missed it; the jump in January? Are you relocating from Virginia?
A little more about Jim Webb. He stopped in Okinawa in the fall of ‘81 specifically to look up our First Sergeant. Webb calls him on the phone in his SNCO barracks late on a Sunday PM, and has to convince the 1st Sgt that he is indeed his old platoon cmdr stopping by to see him. The 1st Sgt thought at first it was one of us Lts screwing with him.
Toby – I just turned on the A/C here in Okinawa tonight because it’s still a bit muggy, even though it’s been raining all day, with temps in the high 60’s.
I’ll be going to Seoul, South Korea at the end of the month for about 5 days. I’m looking forward to experiencing some cold weather.
morning!
okidave – you and raven have to have a conversation about webb, if you haven’t already. *g*
Selise,
No, in my lurkings, I’ve missed Raven’s comments about Webb. As I recall, Raven is a Vietnam Vet as well. Did he know Webb in Vietnam?
Morning, selise.
I don’t know if anyone still out there has read The Nightinggale’s Song, by Robert Timmerberg. Jim Webb is a prominent subject in that book, and I’ve re-read it quite a few times.
Good luck on Tuesday! There are lots of pockets of good news for Dems around the country. One that many national media outlets missed was the mass election of Democrats to the contested judgeships in Dallas County, last year. Republicans had held every judicial position, but every Republican up for election lost. We also elected the state’s first African American District Attorney — this is in the jurisdiction where Henry Wade, of Roe v. Wade, held sway for so long. Craig Watkins has made a campaign out of getting unjust convictions overturned.
There are real things at stake in these elections. Real people lose and suffer when Republicans win, too often. Real people win, and begin to throw off oppression, when good Democrats win.
Good luck. Get out and vote. Encourage your friends to do the same.
Good morning, pups. In the Times today we’ve got MoDo, Friedman and Rich. MoDo says the beauty of Hillary Clinton is that there’s nowhere she won’t go so long as it gets her where she wants to be. Thomas Friedman says an India that makes itself a leader in both cheap cars and clean mass mobility will be healthier and wealthier. Frank Rich says that if W. doesn’t bomb Iran that will be good news for the rest of the world, but bad news for Democrats.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve also got some hot chocolate made with Dutch cocoa because it’s down to 44 this morning. That’s almost winter weather for us! Those pumpkin and pecan muffins just came out of the oven, help yourselves and have a great Sunday.
okidave – i don’t think so, but i better let raven “speak” for himself… just be prepared that your perspectives may be somewhat different.
and i think there are two frequent commenters – raven and Raven (just to be confusing). although i havent’ seen Raven commenting here recently.
I have a pecan tree in my back yard, and I’m gathering, getting ready for baking. :)
Sorry for the OT. I was just looking at google news and one of the top stories was the text of the president’s latest address. I couldn’t face it.
Lindy, this early in the morning we talk about whatever we want to! How do you keep the squirrels from getting all your pecans?
It’s a race. Also, I have cats. :)
The crows have been … respectful. When I hear them gathering, I go out in the yard and tell them to go away…and they do.
Which reminds me…do you know what sort of fertilizer a pecan tree needs?
Mornin’, all -
Been mostly off-’puter since early Thursday with only time to check the on-line papers.
There’s apparently been some news at the Lake wrt Jane’s health. Can anyone provide a quick catch-up? Thanks!
Lindy @ 266
Apparently zinc is important. This is from Clemson:
Pecan information from Clemson
Hope that helps.
Waccamaw @ 267
last i read, she’s doing well, staying at howie’s, getting treated like a queen with all kinds of fresh food, and checking in via comments now and again.
Waccamaw @ 267
I have not been lurking as much as usual but I did see a comment that she has had her last surgery and is doing fine. She had a post yesterday.
Mornin’ all!
Lindy @ 266
Have the same question but was told at a farm supply store yesterday that there’s a special fertilizer for pecans that needs to be applied in February (at least in the mid-Atlantic states).
There are about a dozen trees on my old family farm that have not produced nuts for at least three years now and I am quite worried about them. Thinking about getting an expert to have an on-site look for more specifics.
Iran marks U.S. embassy seizure, brushes off threats
Students burned the Stars and Stripes outside the leafy compound in downtown Tehran that once housed the U.S. mission stormed by radical students on November 4, 1979, almost 10 months after the U.S.-backed shah left into exile.
Waccamaw @ 273
8. Q: When do you fertilize pecan trees and with what?
and…
on the good news front – the ny roots project folks are going like gangbusters this weekend. they’re planning some kind of vigil on monday and hopefully a meeting with someone on schumer’s staff. and they’re making a video from mukasey’s testimony before the SJC (i ripped video for 13 clips jill wanted – thank you tw3k!).
very nice to see that schumer will not be allowed to make his vote without a protest from his constituents.
Good Morning,
I have absolutely no idea what happened in Syria on September 6 but I know I don’t like this version
Waccamaw @ 272
Do you have a county extension agent? They used to advise people about this sort of stuff, but not so much in some states anymore.
Marion in Savannah @ 260
just read rich on iran/clinton/… i still haven’t watched the last dem debate, and i should – since everyone seems to be talking about it.
having trouble doing it though. yuck.
Elliott @ 276
Morning, all. Damn time-change.
Depleted uranium would leave traces of radiation, wouldn’t it?
PeteCO @ 279
if someone bombed one of the usa’s nuke plants – one that is used to make plutonium for weapons. can you imagine the outrage?
how is it that it’s ok (for whoever – usa or israel) to bomb syria? where is the international outrage?
Thanks to selise, JPL and twolf!
Lindy -
Extension agents are available in the county b/c it’s still agriculture-based tho’ small family farms being gobbled up (same song, second verse all over the country). :-(
this sounds bad:
more on the same thing…
Activists detained in Pakistan emergency
“Speaking at a news conference, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said there had been 400 to 500 “preventative arrests” since the emergency was declared.”

because suspending the constitution, putting judges under house arrest and rounding up rights activists is the best way to fight islamic extremism.
now i see why musharraf and cheney get along so well.
selise @ 285
Of course, it could never happen here……
/snark off.
Informed Comment is recommending this blog for up-to-date reporting on Pakistan
it has some live blogging and most recently the speech President Musharraf gave to the nation on TV
selise @ 275
Selise, where’s this info. I’m from NY and would love to participate on a local level if they’re doing that.
Ranchers angry over army site expansion
The U.S. Army wants 418,000 acres of private ranch land to triple the size of its Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site, a training area considered suitable — some would say essential — for preparing American warriors to do battle in the Middle East and Afghanistan. The 1,000-square-mile facility would be 15 times the size of the District.
Elliott @ 287
The speech is interesting; “I would like to ask the whole nation. Why? Why this state of affairs? In my opinion, it is the judicial activism”
And also; from the English portion “I would, at this time, venture to read out an excerpt of President Abraham Lincoln, specially to all my listeners in United States. As an idealist, Abraham Lincoln had one consuming passion during that time of supreme crisis and that was to preserve the Union – because the Union was in danger. Towards that end, he broke laws, he violated the Constitution, he usurped arbitrary powers, he trampled individual liberties, his justification was necessity.”
So that’s ok, then.
Talking Heads upstairs…
PeteCO @ 290
yeah, makes it all all right, preserving the union.
I can substitute the United States for every reference to Pakistan in those opening paragraphs of Musharraf’s speech and almost hear the words coming out of George Bush’s mouth.
*shivers*
solai @ 290
here’ the googlegoup. you have to request membership – that’s what i did yesterday morning, even though i live in MA (i wanted to help out this week – i’m so pissed off at schumer)…. got a reply in a couple of hours.
there’s a googlegroup for most (i think) states, although they’re not all active at the moment – it’s nice to have them when we need them.
solai @ 293
there is a googlegroup email list. just request membership (probably a good idea to say you saw the posting on fdl this morning).
you should hear back within a couple of hours – that’s what happened when i signed up yesterday morning…. although i live in MA (and so am on that list), i was so pissed off at schumer i wanted to see if there was anything i could do to help out the NY folks. i’m sure they would love to have another person to work with. many fingers make for light work. *g*
oh, that ’s strange. my first comment didn’t appear – even though i reloaded the whole page. and then when i reposted it, the old one appeared as well as the new.
that’s never happened before.
OkiDave @ 251
From VA to CA, God willing.
PeteCO @ 285
The idea that they used nuclear weapons is simply absurd. There would definitely be fallout, as well as a seismic record in scores of labs throughout the region. Syria would be inviting in the IAEA for sampling.
As well, if this were some type of nuclear lab, even for a dirty bomb, there would likely be detectable fallout traces.
Depleted uranium? That might be on the casing of a bunker buster…but I thought the place attacked was a surface facility. That’s what the Satellite photos suggested. Again, there was no huge crater as expected with a tactical nuke of bunker buster. Depleted uranium (non-fissionable material) might not leave a lot of airborne fallout that could be detected…but definitely would leave soil traces. Depleted uranium has very low radioactivity…about the same as natural ore. The bad thing about depleted uranium is that it is a very dense heavy metal. And like other heavy metals it can cause heay metal poisoning when ingested or breathed in.

Does anybody really know what time it is?
[Chicago]
Here in San Antonio we just finished early voting-10 days worth-this years election has 16 propositions about changes to the state constitution. Several of these possible additions to the constitution are going to cost mondo money. LESS THAN 2% OF REGISTERED VOTERS VOTED DURING THE 10 DAYS OF EARLY VOTING. The CPN(couch potato nation) just yawned, and indicated that they would much rather have COLLEGE FOOTBALL and the NFL. But what really has the people up in arms here in SoTx is the fact that Time-Warner(local monster cable company) won’t carry the NFL network. Which will be broadcasting a Dallas Cowboys game in a few weeks.
QUESTION Why the hell don’t we just elect freekin dictators for life to school boards, all the way up to prez, that should make the vast majority of the CPN happy. After all, that way they would not have to think about that ol nasty stuff like say GOOD GOVT. I don’t know about the rest of the country, but at least here in SoTx, sports talk radio, the sports section of the newspapers, and the local TV news and SPORTS programs all get thousands of listeners, readers, watchers and people- who are committed to voicing their opinions- more than politics(stuff that can actually affect your pocketbook and your life) I give up. My wife and I are going back to our house on Chae do Doe(not how it is spelled, but how it is pronounced) an island just off the south coast of South Korea-semi tropical climate. And I can get much better world news from both a Korean channel and a Japanese channel-they both broadcast in english-and I can get the BBC. I gave up on american networks 6 months after I moved here in 2003.Pap, nothing but Pap. Thats all you get from ABC,NBC,CBS,CNN. No news is good news. But whatever you do, don’t tell the CPN what is really going on. This country used to be great, we had giants in congress, now we have mental midgets. I was in WaDC in the early 1970’s, and there was an excitment that gripped the country when the senate watergate hearings were on TV. You know, I can not think of anyone, dem or rep, who could do the same thing today. Not a one. And that is shameful. I am ashamed of the dem leaders both senate and house, and am ashamed that the crooks that have been running the rep side, have never been called to account. But mostly, I am ashamed of OUR congress for not impeaching both gwb and cheney(Even real republicians-not those hacks currently in congress-have spoken out loud and long for impeachment). And what do the dems do? They cave to every damn thing that gwb wants.
