a lot of Americans are having a very hard time of things right now. Maybe YOU aren’t, but most of them are. Most of them have been doing poorly for a good long time now, too. Pretending that illegal immigration has nothing to do with this is to deny the totality of knowledge humanity has gained on economic matters in favor of one study with questionable methods written 2 years ago. Perhaps you should examine which if you, FDL or Chris Dodd, is best in tune with the sentiments of most americans.

Be careful what you wish for. The media is about to hype Edwards big time. He is going to get lavish praise. And why is that? It’s because he is the weakest candidate from a money standpoint. Next year, when his campaign is forced to go dark due to public financing concerns, he will be at the complete mercy of the GOP attack machine. Can’t you just see Rove rubbing his hands and cackling?
All of the sudden, the media is entranced by Edwards. He is brilliant, eloquent, a real fighter for the people, he’s better than sliced bread and walks on water. All Democrats should vote for him.
And once they all do, the trap is set. The swiftboating will be like nothing we have ever seen and the hapless candidate and his equally hapless party will be in no position to fight it off.

also, by next year, when edwards gets the nomination, his campaign WILL NOT go dark, because he has enough support from the people. remember, without hillary and obama skewing the numbers, the money he’s raised would have been a record, and he’s not whoring to the big money lobbyists like the republicans (and HRC).

OK, so out here on the edge of the Pacific Ocean this is a huge issue. The trucks and cars that got caught in the I-5 tunnel fire in LA a couple of weeks ago left something like eight vehicles without drivers on-scene or reporting later, and presumed dead. The next day a CHP officer noted this happens all the time when an illegal crashes their car, they flee the scene, as they are driving without a license or on a fake license.

I know about five guys in my town without legal licenses driving around–no license, no insurance. I hired a guy who told me he had just moved here from Washington State and presented his Washington license with his Social Security card. Found out later his SS card was fake and his Washington license was probably fake—it didn’t matter, he couldn’t get a CA license since he didn’t have papers. He was driving my commercial vehicles around illegally and I had to let him go. Ugh.

This is stupid policy: knee-jerk anti-immigrant policy that threatens everyone on the highway. One would hope Chris Dodd starts paying attention, not just scoring cheap shots.

FYI — A bit of information on law enforcement’s attitude in Washington State: Last night, Seattle’s deputy chief of police was a panelist at a public forum on immigration. The driver’s license issue came up and he reiterated two points: that Seattle’s police would much prefer immigrants of any status go through the driver’s test and licensing process because, obviously, it is much safer for all concerned. Secondly, the police department does not use people’s driver’s licenses as a way to check on citizenship or status. They have no interest in acting as a satellite office for Homeland Security. And that’s not just lip service. Up until about ten years ago there was a city law that allowed police to check on people’s status if they were stopped. The department supported the change in the law.

I assume this is an issue Dodd has not paid a lot of attention to as yet, and that his position will likely evolve the more he learns about it. Calling him a racist in the front page post is counterproductive and frankly, offensive.

there are consequences to every action.. we need a president who can see the big picture and not try to stick their finger in the dike for the surface symptom…

and drivers licenses are a safety concern.. whatever the symbolic aversion people may have to granting licenses to undocumented immigrants, the fact of the matter is that the roads will be safer with people who are licensed than people who are not licensed- you say that they’re breaking the law by being here illegally and driving illegally also? yes, true, but if they’re driving, the pragmatic thing to do is to make sure they’re safe… similar to teens having sex- maybe the right wingers wet dream is for kids not to have any sex, but the pragmatic thing is to give them condoms so they don’t do any damage.. same principle.
