Here's the Sunday talking head line-up (partially via AP and C-Span):
C-Span's Washington Journal -- 7:45am - Mark Halperin, Time Magazine, Senior Political Analyst | The Page; 8:30am - Newspaper Articles & Viewer Calls; 9am - Najmaldin Karim, Washington Kurdish Institute, Founder and President; 9:30am - Maen Areikat, PLO Negotiations Affairs Department, Director General.
ABC's "This Week" — Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.; Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif.
CBS' "Face the Nation" — Sens. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.
NBC's "Meet the Press" — Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn.
CNN's "Late Edition" — Nabi Sensoy, Turkish ambassador; Mohamed ElBaradei, International Atomic Energy Agency chief; Sens. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and Trent Lott, R-Miss.; former Gov. Mike Huckabee, R-Ark.
"Fox News Sunday" -- First lady Laura Bush and Gov.-elect and Rep. Bobby Jindal, R-La.
Congratulations (condolences?) to ABC's This Week for winning the most craptastic guest line-up award this week. Blergh. But Sen. Dodd on MtP and Mohamed ElBaradei on Late Edition both promise to be quite interesting, indeed, given the news of the past week and what is likely to be in the news next week. Rule of law and Iran, anyone?
So, what's catching your eye on the blogs or in the news this morning?
Today's gorgeous shot of a rufous hummingbird comes from Julie's Magic Light Show. Julie got some great shots of this little guy. Have to say, I have never seen one on the east coast anywhere near our feeders or flowers, so this one is quite a find -- they are primarily a west coast species, I believe. Julie has a lovely series on the little guy that is well worth a peek. Found this bird feeder tips article yesterday, and thought others might find some of the information in it useful. Enjoy.
PS -- I will be on the Sam Seder Show this afternoon at 5 pm ET/2 pm PT. You can listen live here.

Good morning, Christy - love that pic!
I had a hunch you’d like that picture :)
I’ve had a busy blogging week– I’ve been writing about fascism and activism over at Daily Kos.
According to my bird book, the ruby throated hummingbird is the only East Coast representative of that species.
Good morning Christy!
Great pic but I’m still thinking about yesterday’s dancing cockatiel.
Looking like at least a three gag Sunday. ;-( Oh, well, at least there’s always hunmmingbirds for a smile.
Good mornin’, Christy! Top of the day to ya.
doddmania!
i’m gonna turn my television on for it - i think it’s been several weeks since it’s been on.
In PA the rufous has been showing up as an occasional visitor the last couple years
JulieWaters @ 2
great diaries - i see i’m not the only one who thought of milton mayer’s book, “they thought they were free” after reading your post on fascism.
eCAHNomics @ 3
The Rubythroated Hummingbird is the only hummingbird that nests on the east coast, but you can get other varieties passing through. The Rufous hummingbird pair that was hanging out in Westmoreland, NH, had been visiting this woman’s feeders for a little more than two weeks while passing through.
We’ve only had luck with ruby throated hummingbirds - but I can tell you that they absolutely love our coral bells.
And, I’m just waiting for the day when the Sunday Morning Head Thread is a firedoglake Head Thread.
and Good morning Christy! thanks for the lineup yukky as it is.
We get “To the Contrary” here on Sundays, am I correct that Jane is on this week?
Speculation about Webb as a vice presidential candidate and his views on Iraq and Iran in today’s WaPo.
JulieWaters @ 10
Well, my bird book (Peterson’s) was published in 1947, so perhaps global warming, invasive species, etc., have changed things quite a bit. But I’m emotionally attached to the book so I’m going to stick with it. (Haven’t a clue as to why I own it; was 3 when it was published & neither my parents nor older brothers would have bought it. The only thing I can imagine is that my 7th & 8th grade English teacher made us all join the Junior Audubon Society. Maybe I bought it then & books weren’t reissued so frequently?)
Good Morning to everyone!
Here’s a chance to vote for projects related to bird/animal conservation
Click and Vote
I get a newsletter from the American Bird Conservancy and this chance to vote was included.
They were asking people to vote for #2.
MM how can you and egregious be awake all ready?
Contract the approach of Webb and Clinton on Iran, from the WaPo article:
Christy, I have a question. It was brought up during Valerie Plame’s visit that there are no paid ads for her book on this site. Or any other books that FDL promotes. Why is that? Is that going to change? Seems inherently unfair.
Elliott @ 16
Well I can only speak for myself, but I’ve been havin erratic sleeping patterns this weekend. Also, I have to get to the flea market for one more “gin” bottle as a prop for Oliver.
They lost one this week. (i.e.someone stole one of the really cool flasks I had previously found)
eCAHNomics, I just saw your question in the previous thread. The most important piece of information I can offer is to avoid the St. Patrick’s day mob if you really want to see anything downtown. If I recall correctly in 2008 the St. Pat’s festivities will be moved to March 14 in order to avoid the beginning of Lent. One of the best ways to see the city is on one of the horse-drawn carriage tours — you’re up high enough to peek into some of the gardens, and they move slowly enough so you can really see things. Fort Pulaski is about 10 or 15 minutes from downtown, and is an interesting place. It’s a great town for walking too. Was there anything more specific you wanted to know that I might be able to help with?
Elliott @ 16
Sleep is highly overrated.
Millineryman @ 19
How did the play go last night?
I believe Webb will never get the VP nod from Hillary Clinton. He would be a potential obstacle to the NeoCon Agenda.
egregious @ 21
lol!
Elliott @ 22
I didn’t go last night. I’m feeling very run down. Friday night it went well. The kids really nailed the number Consider Yourself, a number they had been having trouble with all along.
It’s a great to see kids so passionate. Janet Dickens Monk was there Friday night, Charles Dicken’s great great grandaughter, and they kids were really excited that they get it right for her. The had this discussion about how it was more important that they get it right for her then any review they might get.
I shared that story with her after the show. She was truly touched.
egregious @ 21
oh, my!
i’ve been getting 6 hours of sleep this week, and am so happy it’s not the 2-4 i’d been getting since the begining of summer. when i’m back to being able to sleep 8 hrs a night, all will be right in the world.
ok, not really.
but when i’m not sleeping, everything looks worse than it really is.
MIS @ 20
Thanks. According to the www, 2008 house & garden tours are March 27-30, so that avoids the St Pat’s problem.
Got guide books & am experienced at this kind of tourism, so think I’ve got the fundamentals down. Was looking for things that locals only know about, like restaurants, etc. Your Fort Pulaski tip is a good one–it’s not in either of my guide books.
Also, any knowledge of whether to stay in B&B or regular hotels. Some of the B&Bs sounds wonderful, but pricey.
Oops — Meant to let everyone know I’ll be on with Sam Seder today, along with (I think) Atrios and Matt Yglesias. At 5 pm ET.
Millineryman @ 25 -
hope you’re feeling better soon… and am very happy for you and the kids that friday went so well.
According to this:

it isn’t the guy who was *answering* questions at the FEMA presser who’s leaving, just one of the people who was *asking* them. Philbin is Dir. of External Affairs while hte google ID’s Johnson as Deputy Admin. & COO. Hmm…
7 repubics, 4 democrats, even though the democrats are in power
that’s what’s catching my eye
sliese@29
Thnaks! The chocolate chip cookies for breakfast are helping. :)
Millineryman @ 32
hmmm cookies!
maybe i should make some of them next?
right now, i’m make a ginormous pot of chicken soup. i hope it tastes as good as it’s making the house smell.
perris @ 31
you know a great project?
medea matter should do an analysis of appearances in the medea
dems vs repukes when repukes had majority
dems vs repukes when repukes had it
dems vs repukes when dem pres
dems vs repukes when repuke pres
selise @ 33
I’m sure it will. It’s a great weekend for soup. When I get back from the flea market, I’m putting a pot on.
eCAHNomics @ 27
That’s the problem with them — most of them are VERY pricey! You might want to check the prices at a place called The Bed and Breakfast Inn. They have been well-liked by friends who’ve stayed there in the past, but I’m not sure what their prices are like now. (They used to be very reasonable for an inn.) The number is 912-238-0518. It’s on one of the squares, but one of the more off-the-beaten track ones, where “regular folks” live.
Millineryman @ 25
that is neat about the kids wanting to do it right for Janet Dickens Monk
and now Consider Yourself will run through my head all day but that’s not a bad thing I always liked Oliver!
solai at 18 — I don’t know — Simon and Schuster, who are her publishers, make the advertising decisions for promotion, I would assume. But sometimes authors get some input on that. I know several publishers have purchased ads in conjunction with a Book Salon appearance to take advantage of potential synergy for sales and the chat week(s), but I haven’t heard anything about them making a decision to do so for Valerie’s book.
One of the long-term issues for liberal blogs is sustainability. Because we don’t have the same wingnut welfare system where foundations just hand over money for operation costs, we have to rely on scaring up our own advertising as well as asking for donations. And sometimes, that falls far short of the mark. Jane and I have long talked about how wonderful it would be to get things to the point that we could pay something akin to a living wage to people who do such great work for the blog, but we aren’t even close to being able to make that a reality at this point. One of the reasons is that people who have benefitted from our work — and the work of other blogs, not just us — fail to understand the importance of backing up that benefit with a donation or an ad purchase. It’s common sense to want to sustain something that is helping you, but for some reason that doesn’t occur to some folks.
Can’t speak for everyone else, but I really, really hate asking for money. But it isn’t fair to constantly ask Jane to subsidize blog costs either, when so many people, groups, and such, get such a huge benefit from the work but never think to chip in with some support in thanks for the help.
you know, not too much going on this morning in politics, I think I am going to be able to spend one of the last outdoor tennis days actually playing some tennins
go figure
see all later
Good morning all. Thanks for the birdfeeder info, Christie, and the lovely photo. Here are a couple more tips. Although the article describes cracked corn as “filler seed,” I buy it in 50 lb bags at Agway for about $8 a bag, and go through a couple hundred pounds a year. It attracts ground feeders including mourning doves, juncos, and wild turkeys. I throw a few handfuls out on the clean snow every morning during the winter. I use an old Christmas tree stand to support a dead branch with lots of side branches for the birds to perch on, and set it near my feeder. I also bought a heated birdbath and was disappointed that the birds paid little attention to it at first, but after a while they started using it. It was fun to watch four or five starlings splashing around together in the bath. Cheers.
MIS
Thanks again. B&B Inn is in the guidebook & has room prices that range from modest to expensive. I’ll check it out.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 38
I totally get hating to ask for money, but you’re providing a valuable service through the blog, without requiring anyone to put money into it. I’m glad to donate from time to time, but I only usually think to do it when y’all mention this sort of thing.
Personally, I think you should do pledge drives where people pledge per denouncement. I.e., $2 for every time in a week some mainstream media person or right-wing blogger attacks Jane on a personal level.
Back in Wisconsin in the ’80’s we did that with Planned Parenthood. They had a pledge per protester drive– the more protesters there were outside the clinic, the more money they got. :)
Elliot @ 37
It’s funny as a gay man I never got the show tune gene. From all the rehersals I’ve been through, I can honestly say I’m not tired of any of the songs. As a matter of fact, I have a much more appreciation for them seeing the hard work, dedication and passion that goes into bringing them to life.
This was the first musical I’ve been involved with. Now it’s onto Hello Dolly, which I get to make Dolly’s hats. That will be quite fun!
Christy -
Since you bring up the subject of donations:
Who do I need to contact to see if a check I sent in early July ever reached y’all? I had a statement reconciliation problem a month or two back that might account for it, but to the best of my knowledge, it still hasn’t cleared. Will go back thru’ all statements since then this coming week but don’t have them with me right now.
Millineryman @ 43
not gay but I got the show tune gene the first time I saw liza manelli in the movie version of cabaret
I fell in love with her…still lover her
I met bob fose out at a party in the hamptons…great guy too
Waccamaw — Jane handles all of that, so I’d e-mail her on that one.
Who sleeps 8 hours except babies?
Revolutionary minds need to be well rested
Millineryman @ 43
WOW! for Hello Dolly!
They’re lucky they have the right man for the right job right there!
Have a great day… I gotta move the boat.
Thanks, Christy!
Off to find a old “gin” bottle. I love starting my day here. Now that I work on a client’s site, I have limited access to FDL during the week, which makes me savor my time on the weekends here so much more.
Enjoy your day everyone!

i want to commend everyone who was in the streets of america’s cities yesterday protesting the war and calling for withdrawal and some (like me and my daughter) for impeachment. I was in Boston, 7,500 folks of every possible stripe. Howard Zinn gave a rousing speech,he’s 85 now and it was a privilege to see him again. The spirit of the thing was intense and wonderful. It was GOOD to be out there owning our streets again (which are in fact part of the commonwealth we alll own, along with rivers, streams, etc). Here’s to anyone who was out there yesterday from Boston to Seattle! One hundred thousand people were making their voices heard yesterday throughout the US and I say, here, here! Next time let get everyone out there! xo
I gotta run– we’re doing another birding trip today, this time to Dead Creek, where I sometimes get some really nice photos, like these ones.
Elliott @ 52
Here’s the Q I emailed in.
Mornin’ Pups.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 38
yeah, it sucks (asking for money).
but, on the other hand, when you do ask for $, you are giving those of us who benefit the most (your readers) a way to contribute. so, in a way, you’re actually doing us a favor.
don’t know if that helps….
but here’s a little story. for the first 911 anniversary, i wanted to place an anti-war ad in the worcester t&g, which covers central ma. i wrote the ad in the form of a letter with some friends in the local peace group and another friend (the most amazing organizer i’ve ever met) let me use his list of local people. i don’t remember the exact number, but there were less than 200 addresses. i sent letters by snail mail to all of them with a copy of the proposed ad and request for donations and/or for names to sign the letter in the ad.
none of the people on the list knew me. but i got back almost $3,000 - they were so grateful to have someway to speak out publically against the wars.
anyway, that taught me that organizing isn’t convincing people to do stuff… it’s helping people have a way to do the things they want to do but don’t know how.
if you were to post a monthly reminder that server fees, etc. needed to be paid (not to convince people to give, but to let us know our contribution is welcome), i know i’d be grateful. i can’t pitch in much, but a reminder that it’s needed let’s me know my small bit is appreciated.
Simon & Schuster is owned by CBS Corp. Which explains why Katie Couric secured the Valerie Plame interview. However, Les Moonves, President and CEO of CBS Corp, Viacom, is listed as a lifelong democrat and friend of Bill Clinton. In January 2006, Moonves was instrumental in making the deal that brought together CBS-owned UPN with The WB to form the CW Network.

Waccamaw @ 44
Mornin Christy and pups,
Waccamaw, i had the same situation and e-mailed Jane. She explained that it does take a little longer for $nail mail donations and my check cleared in two to three cycles. Not to worry. Hmmm, time for me to pony up again too.
Keyboard challenged here (hunt & peck school of typing) that’s why I post infrequently, but bluejeansntshirt loves him the lake and all the pups who romp upon it’s shores.
Peace to all firepups and keep marching, it really recharges the batteries.
kittykitty @ 53 -
blessing to you and all who marched yesterday. you represent many more of us who couldn’t be there in body, but were with you in spirit. many, many thanks.
We had one of these briefly visit our late season feeders several years ago. That same summer/fall season we also had western tanagers so it was quite a treat to see two species not normally associated with east of the Rockies territory.
Mornin’ folks.
Well, I swallowed hard and watched (after I remembered it was on) Chris Dodd on Press The Meat.
Timmeh was his standard, odious, gotcha-a** self. Dodd handled him reasonably well however.
dakine01 @ 62
thanks. starts here in 20 mins.
I was wondering how Russert would be towards Dodd. Did Dodd do a good job of getting his message out?
‘morning all, coffee is ready…
fire all but out, a very good thing…
Marion in Savannah @ 36
eCAHN, Marion can speak to this better than I can, but you might consider staying out on Tybee Island. The B&Bs may be a little more reasonable there and the drive back to Savannah is fairly easy as I recall.
Evangelical Crackup
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10.....r=1&hp
…..Conservative Christian leaders in Washington acknowledge a “leftward drift” among evangelicals, said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council and the movement’s chief advocate in Washington. He told me he believed that Hybels and many of his admirers had, in effect, fallen away from orthodox evangelical theology. Perkins compared the phenomenon to the century-old division in American Protestantism between the liberal mainline and the orthodox evangelical churches. “It is almost like another split coming within the evangelicals,” he said.
….“Even in Wichita, times have changed,” Hill said. “I think people will hear the Gospel better when it is expressed not just verbally but holistically, through acts of hospitality and by bringing people together.
“In the evangelical church in general there is kind of a push back against the Republican party and a feeling of being used by the Republican political machine,” he continued. “There are going to be a lot of evangelicals willing to vote for a Democrat because there are 40 million people without health insurance and a Democrat is going to do something about that.”
Wow maybe DiFi will finally announce she is a ReTHUGlican on ABC….

Speaking of Russert, don’t miss Maureen Dowd’s “Interview” between Timmeh and Dead-Eye Darth…er, Dick:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10.....ref=slogin
Everyone worries that a general strike would be too damaging. Well, here’s my ‘focused strike’. I’ll not buy any book featured in Book Salon if it’s not accomapanied by a paid ad. There should at least be a quid pro quo.
I’ll even offer a ‘carrot’. I’ll buy every book with a combo book salon/paid ad.
From today’s Boston Globe, coverage of speech by Bishop Tutu at Old South Church yesterday
if anyone has the stomach to watch Difi, let me know if she goes off on her, “no one should be building in CA… you shouldn’t be using shake roofs and shingle siding” routine…
I couldn’t believe what was coming out of her mouth the other day… no one has used those building materials in more than 20 years out here and just where exactly does she think everyone should live in So Cal?
Maybe in No Cal? I swear, she must be suffering some form of dementia.
dakin01@66
Thanks. There are 2 B&Bs listed on Tybee Island in my guidebook. One is in the very pricey category. The other is more moderate (Hunter House) but sounds like the renovations made it into a more modern type of place. But will check it out.
DiFi has become such a canker sore on the progressive movement lately, not only her disgusting interview about building materials etc….but with her pathetic excuses for her votes…She is a Bush Bot and enabler of the war criminals. She should be treated accordingly, with no respect!
eCHAN
I never heard your good question asked on Washington Journal :(
Difi can go on and on about home building issues, but cheap and cheezy political decisions are at the root of much of this…
this fire really should never have gotten as out of hand as it did…
Christy Hardin Smith @ 38
Christy…this site has tremendous flow through so I was wondering if you have considered this? I think that you could generate financial support for this…and I think you can decide which ads you want to cut-and-paste into your content.

Elliott @ 75
They almost never ask email Qs. Sending them in is an exercise in m*sturbation-not as good as the real thing, but better than nothing.
duifi –shouldn’t be building in fire areas?
what about her house in Western Sonoma County?
katherine Graham Cracker @ 79
yeah, we’ll all move up there next door to her…
katherine Graham Cracker @ 79
Especially following a drought.
Better not build in Sacramento, it’s a flood plain.
Better not build in the Bay Area, too many earthquakes.
OldCoastie @ 80
14 Northern Cal counties have serious sudden oak death problems and the two wet winters have made the problems worse. Senator Dif’s house is near a big stand of tanoak now dead — I hope she is planning on spending soem of dickies money on making her property fire safe
cinnamonape — We’ve looked at every possible source of revenue that you could imagine. And that ABC story on Goole Ads vastly inflates the potential for revenue in termsof political blogs — ask any political blogger who has tried them…
Good Morning Christy & Pups.
I think I’m gonna take the easy route this a.m. and zone in on Dodd telling Timmeh what questions he ought to have asked. That should be just the ticket till I git my coffee. Dodd’s so good at un-muddling the bubblegroupies.
Aren’t rufous hummers regular fare in S. TX? Mebbe one mosied up north a bit & hitched a ride on the bikemobile. Beautiful little fellas.
Beautiful pix, Julie! Thanks. ;->
I’m already ticked at MTP. In the voiceover intro Dodd was referred to as “Chris Dodd” twice. Never “Senator Chris Dodd”. Then in Russert’s opening remark it went something like “A democrat who has moved his family….. Welcome.” Still no “Senator”
solai @ 85
but the Plunger is always Americas mayor
and Senator Clinton is Mrs. Clinton or Hillary
blerg.
dodd’s doing very well, and i’m glad to hear him address some of the important topics brought up. but i really can’t stand timmeh… tv off again. i’ll listen to the podcast where i can skip the non-dodd parts.
perris @ 39
Sounds terrific! Do you ever put a face on a ball and just whack it into the middle of next week? Very therapeutic! ;->
Howard Dean: Right again.
When Howard Dean spoke at DemocracyFest one of the things he spoke of at length about was how the Democratic National Committee was reaching out to find common ground among evangelical and other Christian groups. He made the point that these folks are moving away from the hard right positions of “God, Guns and Gays,” and moving toward issues of the occupation of Iraq, poverty, social justice and environmental stewardship. Dean said that there is much common ground that can be explored in the next election cycle.
Last night I found this in the “>New York Times:
(Snip)
This ten page article in the Sunday Magazine offers much to consider as progressives try to find common ground with a constituency that was led astray by wolves in sheep’s clothing (Fallwell, Dobson et al) that for far too long has held sway over the public presentation and perception of American Christianity.
Amen.
OldCoastie @ 72
DiFi is basically creating bad will amongst all her constituencies and showing just how out of touch she is with the realities of Californias life TODAY. Everyone in SoCal would be offended by those comments…implying that THEY were responsible for the burning down of their own homes. There are probably a lot of old model homes that may still have shake shingles, but they aren’t common in new developments. In some areas they are banned unless they are impregnated with retardant.
Better that people who include fire resistant materials in their homes and undertake activities that reduce the threats of fire in their landscaping get breaks in their property tax rates. If a developer does it then they could have special benefits related to approvals or reduction of certain fees. Plus that reduced property tax rate would be something that is attractive to buyers…and such would have to be noted in sales materials whether such materials exist and the benefit that accrues.
