Hey, everyone! Phoenix Woman here, subbing for Kirk.
So what should I write about tonight?
On the one hand, I want to let everyone know about this guy, who bought into a particularly vile racist lie that stated that “Mexican separatists” were behind the fires currently ravaging southern California. Geezo Peezo, dude: It’s nice to see you’re honest enough to admit when you’ve been hosed, but really: Only someone whose brain’s been mired in FOX News and the FOX Lite rantings of CNN’s Lou “Eeeek! Reconquista!” Dobbs would have fallen for this in the first place.
On the other hand, Scarecrow’s pointed out in an e-mail to me that John McCain, who had about half a decade’s worth of experience as a torturee and who occasionally has fits of decency, has criticized Rudy Giuliani for not acknowledging waterboarding as torture. (For more on Rudy and his wide stance on torture, see Digby’s recent essay.)
Now, considering that the Senate Judiciary Committee has asked Bush’s Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey to say once and for all whether he considers waterboarding to be torture (John McCain calls it “very exquisite torture“, and again, he should know), one would think that we could count on McCain to vote against Mukasey’s confirmation, right?
Right?
Gee, you’re not going to back down on this, are you John?
Maybe we should ask him: Main: (202) 224-2235, Fax: (202) 228-2862. (Yeah, he won’t be around this weekend, but he’ll have some messages to look forward to on Monday.)

HA! PW!
Remember when McCain said “the Vietnam war is over, we don’t need to re-fight it?” That doesn’t include his snide bullshit about Woodstock and him being “tied up”. Fuck a bunch of officers, plenty of us on the ground were as pharmaceutical as anyone at Woodstock. Don’t be surprised at anything he does.
raven @ 5
W-H-A-T!?! You mean y’all weren’t all amurican boys, all clean cut and clean livin’ over thar? /s
What bonehead wimps…yes…even McCain. Just tell it like it is. Torture is torture. I’m repulsed by this boneheadedness. Mukasey can’t decide if torture is torture???…he does not deserve to be AG by any means, period.
McCain, who himself was tortured…can’t come out against torture no matter what???
Americans have been led to believe that torture is okay as long as it protects “them”. They have yielded everything we stand for. They speak of their “faith”, which professes that they should turn the other cheek…but no…
Something sinister and dark, and violent, and accepting has crept into our society…
It is here, and we have to deal with it somehow.
Torture is okay in order to save your own sorry ass, as long as someone else does it, but sacrifice to save everyone else’s lives, nothing but lies, lies, lies….
Lemmings.
All disasters in California are the work of the ghost of Don Luís María Peralta. I heard it on the TeeVee Internets Ajiggers.
dakine01 @ 6
High as the cost of living.
raven @ 1
Caw!
i’m just hoping that mukasey doesn’t make it out of the SJC. yeah, him and the fisa bill stuck in committee. that’s what i’m hoping for.
i may be an idiot, but it’s saturday night and i don’t want to face that reality right now. :-)
raven @ 5
Heh, there was more and better shit in Nam than at Woodstock…
selise @ 11
I’m looking forward to seeing Chris Dodd on TV tomorrow. :-)
Even if Mukasey comes out now and says that waterboarding is torture, it is too late in my opinion. It’s not something you have to think over.
CTuttle @ 12
Cheaper too! Cambodian Red, OJ’s, BT’s, Obesitol. . .damn!
raven @ 15
The good ole days…! ;-)
Phoenix Woman @ 13
thats right! thank you!
now i don’t have to egage in wishful thinking in order to cheer myself up. excellent.
CTuttle @ 16
If I knew I was gonna live this long I would have taken better care of myself!
CTuttle @ 16
Breech block a 12 gauge for a real “shotgun”.
Good evening friends.
How do you think that the high ranking repubs and candidates would like being water-boarded? A taste of the good life might have them whistling a different tune.
Speaking of Dodd, here’s the video of his speech last week.
Christy had the transcript, but no video.
I went on a little march today! It was a multipurpose protest, some code pink, impeach shrub, et al… It was cool, about a hundred and fifty participated, I’ll post the article from tomorrow’s daily rag…!!! 8-)
Loo Hoo. @ 21
He’s the man. Byron Dorgan gave a great speech right before pointing out the $$$ rip-offs by the contractors in Iraq…it was also outstanding I thought.
raven @ 15
One of the fun things I dealt with in the AF was how all the senior NCOs and officers were just so sure they could tell whomever was smokin’ somethin’. Especially by how you parted your hair. It was just so obvious to them that if you parted your hair in the middle you were on somethin’.
Of course, I always parted my hair (yeah I had some then) on the side. And had a real nice buzz going when I met the boards for squadron airman of the month, squadron airman of the quarter, and base airman of the quarter.
CTuttle @ 22
Good for you!!!
Loo Hoo. @ 21
and here’s an mp3 audio of the speech i ripped for tw3k, who couldn’t load the video.
Loo Hoo. @ 14
amen
the link worked for me.
I don’t know why other people’s link didn’t work. I see it sometimes.
???
dakine01 @ 24
The heads could tell each other just by lookin at each other. I think the Airplane said it. “Shared a little joke with the world”. Course there was also the granny shades, peace signs and the ever popular tail rotor chain bracelet.
TexBetsy @ 20 -
just wanted to say, i thought you asked good questions during book salon… was hoping they would be answered.
Good to hear it CT. Someone said RevDeb was at a protest as well. Anyone else go?
Loo Hoo. @ 21
Hey Loo Hoo! It seems we had been passing each other by lately, and I had wondered how you had fared with the fires. Found out last night you were home and safe with only a stinky house, but it was still standing. Better late than never, welcome back!
dakine01 @ 24
so they never suspected? ;)
I’m hoping Blackwater has to pay back all of the social security, unemployment, worker’s comp. etc. for all of the “private contractors” along with a hefty fine. Then I hope the congress will make laws outlawing mercenaries operating out of or paid for by the USA.
CTuttle @ 22
bless you and all who marched for peace today!
Thanks Selise. I went back and checked, but they were not.
raven @ 29
R U a hippie? :)
Loo Hoo. @ 34
me too but something tells me you and me are dreamin’
Where are my manners? Good evening everyone, hope all had a lovely saturday.
TexBetsy @ 36
mine neither.
raven @ 29
“Picked up the morning’ paper
And much to my surprise
A friend of mine was lookin’ back
Through funny lookin’ eyes
The caption of the picture said
Possession was the charge
They thought he ought to cut the grass
That grew in his back yard”
Thanks, madmommy. Today I walked around a bit and found that my precious avocados made it through all of the winds. I have two trees, about four years old, and one of them is loaded! They’ll be scarce this year, and ready just about Christmastime.
Elliott @ 33
Nope. I was named AF Hawaii Airman of the Quarter. Serious fun.
Loo Hoo. @ 42
Chips and guac at Loo Hoo’s!
selise @ 40
Jane’s question wasn’t even answered.
selise @ 35
Mahalo! On the Micro trend thread, I was disappointed nobody said; Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics…! ;-)
Loo Hoo. @ 42
So would it be okay if I’m green with envy. iI’m glad for you though.
dakine01 @ 41
Check out my man.
What’s a tail rotor chain bracelet? Coming from someone who wore beads around her cowboy boots, and even had a pair of Joe Cocker boots!
CTuttle @ 46
To be perfectly honest, I only understood about a third of what was being discussed.
raven @ 48
That looks a lot like a pipe I had in college…
dakine01 @ 43
It’s called “gettin over” like a fat rat!
madmommy @ 39
Yes’m! Especially since it’s now 5 zip Bosox…!!!
dakine01 @ 43
Is this where I say “da kine”
Loo Hoo. @ 45
that was a weird book salon.
CTuttle @ 46
well, i couldn’t since i hadn’t read the book. but pach came pretty close.
Elliott @ 54
yeppers!
Where do you live, JPL?
Yes! Chips and guacamole with just a little bacon in it!
CTuttle @ 53
How does Manny get away with flipping off his batting helmet as he rounds 3rd? It’s not falling off on it’s own, he reaches up to flip it. I though they had to wear it while on the basepaths? It cost him tonight when he got thrown out at home.
So if I’m good the rest of the night and knowing that as a child I saw Ted play, can I ask Tuttle if he thought Manny was safe?
Loo Hoo. @ 49
The old Huey helicopter had a chain that ran the tail rotor and they made cool bracelets but they were really hard to come by. Now they use rubberized belts.
Elliott @ 54
Yes! An appropriate time…! ;-)
selise @ 56
I tried to call BS on his use of the term “Universal Healthcare” with Hillary’s plan but he chose to ignore my polite correction.
TexBetsy @ 20
Yeah, it’s just an ‘enhanced interrogation technique’, right?
TexBetsy @ 50
i don’t think we were meant to understand.
seriously. sounded like spin to me.
raven @ 60
That looks a bit painful to wear as a bracelet, all those bendy parts to catch the hair on your arms. Of course, I’m such a baby I won’t wear a stretchy watch band.
OT, but very cool:
Iraqi women serve as Ramadi police (AP)
from Yahoo! News
http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/topstories/*http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071027/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_women_police
AP – The women received their first paychecks a few weeks ago about $500 for a month’s work as police officers. They paid rent, bought food, wiped out debts. But the seemingly simple transaction has left at least one woman in fear for her life, another threatened with divorce.
madmommy @ 65
It was about stylin. Not nearly as bad as a steel pot, flack jacket, alice pack, basic load. . .
selise @ 56
It was the ultimate in compartmentalization of the “definition” of Americans. Just his own personal “story” of what the country is about. I don’t like to be analyzed; especially when nobody even ever polls me. Such silliness.
dakine01 @ 62
i think what he chose to ignore was more informative that what he wrote.
but that’s just me.
JPL @ 59
On the 3rd replay, it looked like he got Manny on the hip.
JPL @ 59
The Faux announcers said he was safe…
raven @ 67
The bad ass factor is there, for sure :0)
Looks like something the goth kids would wear, raven! You guys were real trend setters!
selise @ 69
ding!
selise @ 69
that’s a really good point. I’d love to hear Jane’s take on it.
Book Salon – lot’s of good q’s ignored (Suzanne was in there, too).
He said 2 things: America is getting more tolerant (agree). And Hillary is going for the Republican Women vote (interesting). All the rest was BS.
Be interesting to see what the 10 Dems will do if Mukasey keeps dodging the question. Will they actually vote “no”? The choices are so bad that some may rationalize a “yes” vote because Mukasey replaces the current acting AG, who is probably worse, and is not nearly as “independent.” We have government by extortion. Give me what I want, or i will do something even worse.
This is the difference between PW’s post and the Penn post, PW has absolutely no problem jumping in and expanding the conversation while Penn decided to keep his head in the toilet. 99.9% of the book salons are informative but this one wasn’t. It’s to FDL’s credit that we had an opportunity to see the .1%.
GordonM @ 76
Hillary’s recent statements about which of the recently aquired executive powers she would recind disturbs me. Greatly.
Loo Hoo. @ 73
That’s the name of that tune!
Scarecrow @ 77
and Woe is US.
GordonM @ 76
that may explain alot.
… could we please have D candidates who go for the D vote?
selise @ 82
Including the L wing?
selise @ 82
This is the problem, she won’t get the Repub women vote because, guess what, they are repubs.
selise @ 82
It’s sort of like they plan on sacrificing the female/male vote for possible female Repub votes….dumb.
Gore/Dodd.
Scarecrow @ 77
i’ve been calling the sjc asking them to vote “no” even if they think he’s not as bad as the act AG… because if they vote “yes” they are condoning his views on torture and on the power of the executive to ignore the law and the constitution. it’s harder to walk back from if it’s seen as bipartisan.
Scarecrow @ 77
I’ve thought about that too, but if they vote to confirm him, they’re making a serious statement about themselves. History will record this vote…
LS @ 85
Should read: female/male Dem vote….
This is why I am rooting for Boston to win the series
The Rockies Get Off Their Knees
selise @ 82
I keep having the feeling that no candidate is talking to “us” – the progressives. Edwards comes the closest and I am supporting him but I wish somebody would just get up and give a real tub-thumping speech about America.
Elliott @ 81
There was a guest post for Greenwald on Salon that argued that since we are dealing with a completely immortal/criminal regime, the only moral response is complete non-cooperation. I have a lot of sympathy for that position.
Loo Hoo. @ 42
Loo Hoo! Avocados! California avocados!
Gosh, I sure would like a CARE package of those for my bday. Here, on the right coast, they cost anywhere from $1.29 to $1.50 per. And, they are usually not from CA.
I am pretty good (expert?) at picking out my grocery store avocados, but even so, I only have 55% success. But I keep trying. Sigh.
madmommy @ 79
What did she say she would rescind?
Loo Hoo. @ 87
He’s a “Judge” for heaven’s sake, and he couldn’t figure out what he thinks without checking with the WH???? WTF??? We don’t need that. Enough is enough. Over.
Loo Hoo. @ 87
I totally agree.
In fact, it makes me wonder about this new technology, where All the words we say…or post, are recorded.
Like, we have no excuse…it’s all there in black and white, so to speak.
An interesting concept about responsibility.
For me, anyway.
raven @ 48
Well, I guess that’s the biggest water pipe I’ve ever seen!
Bill Moyer’s Journal covered this issue Friday night. Of the two guests, the more conservative law professor, Charles Fried, made some of the Mukasey arguments, but when pressed — and he had to be pressed — finally conceded that waterboarding is torture.
JPL @ 84
No, I think she’s probably calculated that correctly.
Whether her bluff (backed to the hilt by the media) that she’s the annointed one (in the primaries) will work is a different matter entirely. The polls at this point are more about name recognition, and D’s saying “we’re going to win”. The number of people who’ve actually made up their minds on the D candidate is much, much smaller.
katymine @ 89
Is that legal? Do the taxpayers pay any of the stadium or other expenses? Surely they provide police, fire, paramedics, etc…
Scarecrow @ 91
me too.
Chris Floyd for Glenn Greenwald: Dissent or disgrace
Every day it becomes clearer that Thoreau’s answer is the only basis for a genuinely effective resistance to the accelerating depredations of the Bush-Cheney regime. Disassociation, boycott, filibuster, strike — call it what you will, but the Gandhian tag might be the best: “non-cooperation with evil.” The corruption and authoritarian tyranny that the regime has imposed on the nation are evil. The war of aggression it has launched against Iraq is evil. The war of aggression it is fomenting against Iran is evil. If you would not be complicit in evil, then you must not cooperate with it, and you must not acknowledge its power as rightful or legitimate (however powerless you may be to resist its application by brute force).
Ann in AZ @ 96
Memories, are so beautiful and then. . .
If folks haven’t read the Digby post Phoenix Woman links to — don’t miss it. One of her best.
Loo Hoo. @ 93
IIRC, she was very vague, didn’t mention any specific thing. Disturbing. Have any of the candidates specifically stated that they would roll back executive power to the co-equal branch of government as stated in the Constitution?
Last week or so I asked that question…. how many of you personally know someone who supports Hillary as a person who speaks for them…… and the response was pretty pitiful.
Just do not get where they get the poll numbers, probably right along where they find that 30% who support the shrub
Loo Hoo. @ 49
What’s Obesitol?
Loo Hoo. @ 99
Gee, isn’t there some American League team in, uh, Texas that has the same schtick?
Mukasey has already said that in a time of war the president could make decisions on what is legal. Now Mukasey comes out and says waterboarding is bad, so what because he already stated that if the President does it during a time of war, it’s legal?
demi @ 95
Nah, you just jump up and down, stamp your feet and yell “out of context!” over and over. See Bill O’Reilly as classic example.
Scarecrow @ 91
it seems like an immortal immoral regime, doesn’t it? ;)
thanks, I’m going to look for that article because I find myself thinking about how much would I personally actually sacrifice. OR what is my bare level of comfort at which point I would accede my principles
to glenwald >>>
Loo Hoo. @ 99
THAT is a good question…. They do the same thing here in Phoenix……
Loo Hoo, I’ll bring the salsa! See you in December!
Scarecrow @ 97
Reminds me of David Frost on Maher last night. Maher finally pressed David who was trying to make the British peoples opinion of the war much more supportive than it is. Finally Mr. Frost had to admit approval of Iraq occupation by Brits is about 1 percent.
katymine @ 104
The Reporter asked FEMA, and FEMA said Hillary’s the winner….pretty much what’s happening.
I know of not one person who favors her…not to say that if she does “appear” as the “nominee”, I would be forced to vote for her, because I would never vote for more Repubs…ever, ever, ever, but…I dunno…
I think Gore’s gonna bust out and win by a landslide.
Ann in AZ @ 105
Vietnamese (French) weight losing syrup, two fingers and you were good to go on an 8 hour convoy without blinking.
raven @ 101
The pipe I had in college was about two feet long pvc plumber’s pipe with an elbow. The elbow had a carburetor hole at the bend. Put some aluminum foil in there with holes poked in you could put about a quarter oz in it. Took kitchen matches to get it going but once it started, it could fry a party.
katymine @ 104
you may want to read this dkos diary (it will explain why i asked mark penn the question i did – and why marion asked the lead up). it’s a little more inflammatory than i’d prefer, but important info (if true).
madmommy @ 103
She would “study the issue if elected then decide which powers should be given up.”
Scarecrow @ 91
Dissent or disgrace
katymine @ 104
I asked Mark Penn this question earlier…about how Hilarity Clinton is near the bottom of the rabid lamb polls, and we often talk about how none of us know of any, or few Hillary supporters. Are we that far out of mainstream America? No response.
dakine01 @ 118
Thanks, I was looking for the quote when you found it first. As I said, vague, and disturbing.
madmommy @ 109
I’m not sure what you are saying, and would rather not jump to conclusions.
Say again?
dakine01 @ 116
Yea, and a qtr cost about 10 bucks. I’m glad I quit, I’d be broke.
madmommy @ 121
I didn’t go looking because the statement was so ludicrous on its face that I remembered it.
selise @ 117
Geez!!! I wish I’d seen that before I asked the question he didn’t answer anyway, so I could ask a more inflammatory question that he wouldn’t answer anyway…in fact, he didn’t answer anything of substance…just micro this…blah, blah, blah…
Spit.
Loo Hoo at #108- that is so incredibly sweet of you! I will email you as the date draws near! And, I DO know how to treat my CA avocados!
TexBetsy @ 112
Que Bueno!!
Mod, if you could kindly remove my email addy after Valley Girl gets it, I would appreciate it.
Here’s an update on Leahy and Mukasey…
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on Saturday rejected White House criticism that his panel was moving along too slowly the nomination of Michael Mukasey, whom President Bush tapped as the next attorney general.
“The Senate is evaluating this nomination fairly, thoroughly and responsibly in keeping with the way other major nominations are handled,” Leahy stated. “Judge Mukasey’s written responses to questions from Republicans and Democrats, responses which the Committee has not yet received, are critical in the consideration of his nomination.”
http://thehill.com/leading-the…..10-27.html
mod- I have Loo Hoo’s email addy, so, go for it.
dakine01 @ 118
Yeesh. How about, “I will restore the Constitution and the rule of law.”
I can’t imagine that would poll badly, which it seems is Hillary’s first consideration when making decisions.
CTuttle @ 128
The WH is so predictable…they know they are scoundrels, so they take the “offense is the best defense” attitude…spanking Congress for not acting with swiftness to their satisfaction…they can sit on it and spin, as far as I’m concerned. Thank goodness for Leahy and the others…they better not cave!!! Oy Vey….
demi @ 122
What you said about how we have no excuse when everything is recorded, so it’s hard to turn around later and take a different position. Unless of course, one is a member of the Wurlitzer and Media Matters calls BS. Then, as Bill does repeatedly, screech “out of context”.
I completely agree with your point in your original statement, and for rational people this is true. Sadly there are some out there who still haven’t figured out that everything they say is on tape, on-line or otherwise able to be accessed.
My fingers get out in front of my brain sometimes, I hope this clears up everything.
And, to all of you discussing the BA chat, really, I was not trying to derail the conversation by talking about avocados.
I have read the comments you all have made about the chat, and noted them. Frankly I don’t have the heart right now to go read the thread, but will do so tomorrow.
Sounds like basically, it was not good news, but not unexpected in content.
It is the phrase “inevitable Hillary will be it” that drives me nuts…. I so want Edwards to blow out Iowa.
And yes I would be for Gore to jump right in. If Gore said tomorrow…. “I’m in, just send me $100 to get this started” …. he would raise $100 mil in a few days.
LS @ 125
yeah. i mean, he could have just denied it if it wasn’t true.
but, if he’s used polling in support of coups, then how am i supposed to trust his polling here?
Valley Girl @ 132
It’s Saturday damn night, talk about what you want to talk about.
katymine @ 134
I really think that you’re correct in your accessment, but he has given no indication that he will run.
selise @ 135
I saw the question at the time, and I knew you’d said you were going to ask something…let’s say…controversial…but I didn’t get the magnitude of it….makes me wonder…first thing that comes to mind is Blackbridge…or something like that.
raven @ 136
k, raven. what is the current prediction for how many days of water we have left in the ATL area?
Valley Girl @ 133
book salon, not BA. but, you conclusions are, imo, correct.
and i think this thread is about torture and mccain. so that makes both of us ot. ;-)
Valley Girl @ 133
Actually, VG, we were discussing the Book salon thread of Micro Trends…
raven @ 52
back before drug testing became de rigeur… I was always amazed at the stories of what came home in seabags…
LS @ 138
what’s blackbridge?
selise @ 140
When a post starts with So what should I write about tonight?, it’s hard to go OT.
selise- oh, thanks for the correction. Book Salon. See what happens when I am thinking about avocados? I guess I just needed to think about something nice.
madmommy @ 132
well, my fingers get out there too.
I’m still not clear about the conversation we’re having.
But, I’d like to.
A yearlykos I met the pollster that Markos used in his book Crashing the Gate… had no idea that he lives here in AZ….. we hung around for most of the 4 days together and I learned a lot.
He said that there are 4 top issues…
#1 Iraq – every time
Then in any order
-Healthcare
-Economy
-Environment
The thing is those three all point to Iraq… if we were not spending MILLIONS a week then we could have universal healthcare AND NOT tank the economy and save our world BUT we have the Iraq war off budget sucking the treasury dry
selise @ 82
I read at TPM that Gore is only 5 pts away from Hillary in a poll. All the others are way far behind. (And he’s not even running! Can you imagine if he was running?!!)
LS @ 130
Anything in particular they should spin on while in a seated position?
OldCoastie @ 142
I heard stories from people who were at Travis AFB at that time and what was in the body bags as they came into the base. Never knew if it was true or not, though.
katymine @ 147
When we spend money on healthcare, we employ Americans in the healthcare industry. And we have more Americans healthy enough to work.
Ann in AZ @ 148
Uh, try asking Fred Thompson that question.
Valley Girl @ 138
They are giving us until mid January in Athens. We are not part of the Lake Lanier deal. It’s nasty, I build a greywater system to recyle the bath and washing machine water even though it’s illegal.
katymine @ 133
Obama is declaring an aggressive stance.
Stance is not a word any campaign should be using right about now…
well, Jesus ain’t helping the Rockies tonight… I doubt their little “President Bush Tribute” at the beginning of pre-game has been any help either…
katymine @ 133
That shit started four years in the Conglomerate Media. It was the same thing in 1988 when Bill blew his horn on Johnny Carson. I remember thinking back then , why the hell is this guy all over the media all of a sudden. Sho nuff, it was obvious during the primaries in ‘91 that Bill was the annointed one. The DLC’s first project. They use their media connections to control the discourse over extended periods of time.
We’ve got to grow our numbers here in the netroots. A lot.
CT- see my comment above to selise. avocado brain on my part. I did know, at a deep level, that it was Book Salon, bec. I have been reading the comments that were posted in anticipation of this particular BS.
Please do we HAVE to talk about McCain? Those of us who live in AZ get to hear ENOUGH about McCain the man with NO values, spine or will do anything to be Prez.
selise @ 142
Negroponte
LS @ 131
TPM ran this today:
emphasis mine.
Twain @ 90
On Chris Matthews show this afternoon some of his guests offered the opinion that progressives don’t seem to have as much power in the party as was thought.
madmommy @ 149
Hey, that’s where I was born! Hmmm…that story could explain some things..
Demi-
What I took from your original post at 95 was being responsible for one’s statements, as everything is so much more easily retirevable than it used to be. Which is why I am always so amazed at the hissy fits thrown by media types when they are shown to be liars, bigots and instigators.
Ann in AZ @ 161
and just who WERE these guests?
GordonM @ 159
Gawd…it just never ends…
raven @ 153
raven- thanks for info. Somehow I had assumed that Athens got water from Lake Lanier. My bad on the geography. what is the source of water for Athens?
bonkers @ 161
Oh yea, it was true. That was when smack took over. Early 70.
Thanks, mod!
GordonM @ 160
And as always, it was taken out of context.
Valley Girl @ 145
me too. pw suggested thinking about dodd getting on tv for a whole hour tomorrow morning.
but avacodos works too. :)
Valley Girl @ 165
Bear Creek reservoir, it’s only been on line for about 5 years. Otherwise it’s the Broad River.
What runs under the blackbridge???? Blackwater….Negroponte is in the State Department now…..dot dot dot dot
Helllooooo….
OldCoastie @ 155
To be fair, I think that was a choice of the network showing the game, rather than the teams playing. At least I hope so.
dakine01 @ 169
Damn Media Matters.
madmommy @ 163
Day-uhm. Tim McCarver knew that a Sergeant Major was an E9. Wonder if someone was speaking in his ear.
Greetings from the Northland, PW and all,
I went to an antiwar protest downtown today.
It was fairly well attended (around sixty or seventy people or so) and we had several speakers talk to the crowd before the march over to the bridge to hold signs.
We heard from this lady who is in the Democratic primary next year and hopefully will win said primary so we can finally retire Don Young. She talked to us about why she was running, why it was important that we continue to protest this illegal war, and what we can and should do to help stop it.
She also said the dreaded “I” word, which word Nancy Pelosi “took off the table” back in January but which word must be spoken if we’re to truly regain our country.
Impeachment.
We’ll keep fighting the good fight here.
raven #171- thanks for the info. I will google.

Here’s a nice story Cassie posted:
HS kids’ protest makes a difference
These kids care about their health and the health of all their classmates. They protested, got suspended, got press, and MADE A DIFFERENCE! Now their school will be cleaned and even the other schools in their district. Good for them! (The part about their protest is at the end of the article in bold.)
Entire school system to be scrubbed after superbug case
PIKEVILLE, Kentucky (AP) — An eastern Kentucky school district with one confirmed case of antibiotic-resistant staph infection plans to shut down all 23 of its schools Monday, affecting about 10,300 students, to disinfect the facilities.

So we’re good?
LetterMan, welcome! Do you know E*ward Teller?
LetterMan @ 177
LetterMan! Many of the pups know about Diane Benson. I contributed to her last campaign, thanks to info from Ed*ard Teller and egregious, and I plan to do so this time around.
She is an inspiring candidate.
madmommy @ 173
What is done in the pregame & 7th inning “show” is done by the team and/or the league. IF it gets in TeeVee is up to the director and it depends on time. The league and the team can negotiate with the director & the network on what gets shown.
LetterMan @ 176

And, we spent the afternoon playig The First part of a big Monopoly Game….it’s pretty even, so far.)
JPL @ 107
But the question was, is it Constitutional? If it’s unconstitutional, I don’t think even the President can make it constitutional, and I don’t think the Supreme Court would allow it either. They already said he had to comply with Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions. That should be enough!

That is cool, I was a little disappointed in our turnout, we’ve had bigger assemblages here in Hilo… A progressive town…
I was thinking of writing a sports TeeVee 101 post with some of that same info… there seems to be a lot of miss information. IF you are unhappy with the 7th inning show at your ballpark…. it is the teams doing and let them KNOW. It seems that many of the baseball teams support the Repug hyper-patriot meme.
What do you think?
demi @ 198
Monopoly is about the only time DFHs get to play DFCs.
Kinda like playing Risk is about the only time we get to play at war monger.
edit: or should even want to play at war monger.
CTuttle @ 179
Sure you’re not confusing them with breadfruit?

Mmmmm, gumbo! It’s getting cool enough here to start thinking about breaking out the big pot and make me some. I cheat and start with Zatarain’s base, but I’m not from here so it’s legal. Still tastes pretty dang good!
Ann in AZ @ 198
Hopefully the ROBERTS court would find iit unconstitution but it’s iffy. Scary, huh.
GordonM @ 205
Almost comparable in size! Our volcanic soil is very fertile…
How do you make gumbo? I could google it, but then I’d be getting someone else’s recipe.

Dang…now I have to make some…it is finally chilly down here in TX….mmmm…gumbo…yeah…
CTuttle @ 208
And, btw, I like my avocados straight up, with a soupcon of salt.
katymine @ 157
How’s that recall going?
katymine @ 201
We have a minor leage team, the Zephyrs, now affiliated with the Mets. Their 7th inning stuff is mostly goofy: dizzy bat races, t-shirt cannon, race the mascot. Maybe as a minor leage team they are more likely to do family fun stuff than the big league teams do. I haven’t been to a MLB game in ages.

Not right now…. it was in conjunction with Cliff Schecter and trying to tank his Prez run. It looks like he would never win here in AZ if he runs again.
katymine @ 202
It’s fascinating how much Fox hates Boston. They’ll give individual players their due, but it’s been “the Indians have been amazing…” and now “the incredible Rockies…”. And this from the same branch of Fox that gives us the Simpsons and Family Guy. They absolutely will not make a positive comment about the RedSox as a team.
(Oh, and Curt Shilling is a die hard Rethug; don’t know about the others.)
Loo Hoo. @ 208
Gumbo is a thickened stew, best made with a mixture of chicker, fish and sausage. one of the secrets is the roux which is mad from flour and oil and it takes about thirty minutes, plus.
Loo Hoo. @ 208
As I said, I cheat. But basically it is just whatever you want to throw in the pot. Zatarain’s is available in alot of grocery chains, then add chicken, shrimp, sausage, crabs, okra, whatever you like. If you make it from scratch you have to make a roux, then add diced onions and garlic, and build up from that.
Gumbo
LetterMan @ 176
Thanks for protesting and for sharing your photos! You had a wonderful crowd of patriots there, it looks like. We are fans of Diane Benson hereabouts as well.
JPL @ 221
The roux is the thing and it takes time. Down here they refer to it as a 3 beer roux, as in you can drink 3 beers while you’re making it.
I was readin’ my Alice Walker book earlier today, you kmow the one…and the characters were making….Gumbo.
I used Chicken, sausage and alittle bit of pork and 2 kinda onions, peppers, tomatoes, ORAW, of course, and water and some bullion. And Rice.
Shared with the neighbors and go some Chimichangas back with the bowl!
Dubhaltach @ 218
Nite, Dub! Speaking of kinky Repugs, Flynt was interviewed by Cavuto on Faux Spew’s Busniness channel, and, he was saying that some Repug Senator is going to be ensnarled in a huge sex scandal! Didn’t say who, or when exactly…!!! 8-)
selise @ 11
Yes, and now something really important to my stomach’s pleasure.
madmommy @ 205 do you have a recipe for really good gumbo that you could share, and the making of the roux. It has been a long time since I had shrimp gumbo, one of my all time favorite meals.
I’ll try the gumbo. Sounds good. Do you serve it with rice?
Loo Hoo. @ 208
Well..the thing is the roux…and the file…
You take an equal amount of butter or oil and flour, and you cook it, stirring contantly, until it is sort of the color of medium darkish cocoa…it take a long time, but is well worth it…or you buy it already made.
Then you make a veg base of onions, celery, garlic, sauteed separately (from the roux) until softened…take it out of the pan…saute chicken, sausage,….then throw all of those things above into a big pot and with say chicken stock to cover…throw in a bunch of ochra, Salt and pepper to taste and some file…simmer for a while..until it smells awesome…– maybe 10 minutes before yer done…throw in some fresh shrimp…
Serve with rice….and some file to sprinkle in it.
Loo Hoo. @ 229
No other way to do it! And some crusty french bread on the side, for sopping.
Nite, Dub! Speaking of kinky Repugs, Flynt was interviewed by Cavuto on Faux Spew’s Busniness channel, and, he was saying that some Repug Senator is going to be ensnarled in a huge sex scandal! Didn’t say who, or when exactly…!!! 8-)
Please let it be true!
CTuttle @ 219
No, I have not. In fact, I have never heard of that dish. My first reaction is that I would still prefer my avocados straight up, followed by a nice slice of chocolate cheese cake.
But, if you have a recipe, I will be glad to look it over, with a view to changing my opinion.
Howdy y’all !!!!!!
Hiya PW!!!
GordonM @ 220
That again might not be true….. this is how it works….. The teams and the league negotiates with a Network to show X number of games. The network then contracts the “show” with a subcontractor who does Mobile TeeVee. Fox Sports is a division of Fox. They might contact with Mountain Mobile TeeVee and crews the show. Who does the announcing is part of that. They are all subcontractors. Mountain Mobile provides most of the technical crew and the 18 wheeler tractor trailers where they produce the show.
So when you say Fox does XXX might not be true, as there is a director, a producer, technical director and they decide what gets on air besides what Fox negotiated for the show. This applies to all the networks.
You mean the Basamiti Rice I get down at the My Favorite Armeninian Deli?
That’s the one.
It’s really tasty.

Loo Hoo. @ 240
It is actually “feeleh” dried leaves of sassafras trees. It is essential for the authentic flavor. You buy it at the supermarket as a powder.
katymine @ 235
katymine,
The production crew set-up may be as you say but the announcing crews are set directly from the network. For Fox, it means we have to endure Joe Buck and Tim McCarver as announcers of their “premier” game each week or during the WS.
Loo Hoo. @ 240
It’s made from dried sassafras leaves.
katymine @ 236
Same announcers for the pennant and series. Actually all of Fox sports broadcasts have that FNC flavor, despite being shown on Fox Entertainment.
JPL @ 136
We could all go hang out at current TV and bug him to death every day. I don’t know what else we could do to convince him. I just don’t think Hillary will be all that good for his cause.
In one of my notes to him on Current, I said I would make a deal not to bother him again if he could just look us in the eye and say that in his heart he knows another person would make a better President than he would. I don’t know what would be more convincing.
River Road Cook Book is great for basic New Orleans recipes. I have had mine since 1969. My mom has had hers since Jeebus was born.
Yeah, if you like it hot…add cayenne to taste.

I know and you should hear the “snotty” way the TeeVee crews call the “talent” which is their name in the industry. I can never get just the right inflection. There also is a lot of back stories about the “talents” special requests….
The sad part is that they 200 plus folks working the this game are a good bunch who are just trying to make a living. They hardly watch the game except to wish it never goes into extra innings as it makes their workday so much longer.
I made chicken and andouille sausage gumbo last Sunday. I am still fat from it today. And BBQ gulf shrimp. mmmmmmmmmmm
Right now I could go for a muffoletta and a Dixie Beer.

Valley Girl @ 242
That is sort of nasty. :)
Phoenix Woman- you still there?
I have a link for you- and I sure would like to know more about this- Howie (Klein) sets the table: (no, it’s not about impeachment, sorry)
HOW SAFE IS IT TO FLY?
~~~~Not very– at least not according to a reluctantly-released (some would say “covered-up”) $8.5 million survey of thousands of airline pilots by NASA in 2005. But the results were never released and it took the Associated Press until now to squeeze them out of the Bush Regime (by filing a Freedom of Information Act request).~~~~
LooHoo, You can cheat on the roux by browning the flour first in the oven. Just make sure that the oven is warmed to 250 and watch the flour carefully. If done right, the roux will come out with a smoky, nutty flavor but you need less fat. In LA you can actually buy roux on the grocery shelf, but it’s not very good.
That story has been out for a few days..the results were so bad that NASA ordered the company that collected the data to dump the data as part of the cover up.
madmommy @ 261
One option for recreating is if someone has a church fundraiser cookbook. I’ve found Joy Of Cooking is about the best basic cookbook but church fundraiser cookbooks are next. Most every recipe is tested and includes the shortcuts.
It should be possible to find the church cookbooks and make copies. May be tedious but could be helpful.
My ex-Father-in-law, from the Caribbean, used to make what he called “Goood SoooP” on Saturday mornings…it was similar to a gumbo…but it had beef, chicken, and then he would throw in blue crabs…holy smokes…mmmmmmm
McCain wasn’t even present to vote on the legislation regarding this. It obviously wasn’t so important that he “HAD TO” return to vote against it. But now hes all hot under the collar about it?
It’s also well known that amphetamines were regular given to pilots in Vietnam to keep up their “edge”. I would bet that McCain had them available to him. Never heard him raising THAT issue about “pharmaceuticals” being used before.
And somehow $1 million in funds that would generate lots of local profits and tax revenues for the area (and keep people from trudging around on peoples private property) seems a lot better an application of this money than $2.5 TRILLION in a wasted war in Iraq. And McCain wants to get us into a war with an even LARGER military that will cost vastly more.
…………..$1,000,000 vs.
$2,000,000,000,000.
Lets talk about waste, Senator McCain. Let’s talk about corruption.
McCain sponsored add-ons. Like a huge amount of land to “extend and airforce base that, mysteriously, wasn’t even requested by the military for such an extension. Just who was benefittng from THAT purchase Senator McCain? Why was it included covertly in the spending bill?
Or like the $10 MILLION Center to honor a man that …ahem..was also abusing pharmaceuticals while you were “tied-up”. That man was Chief Justice Rehnquist.
http://www.slate.com/id/2125906/
And certainly such a Center has value…but you didn’t make any snarky comment about his drug abuse in that context. Or what about the benefits that have poured into Memphis regarding Elvis.
The fact that some people used drugs at (or IN…a la Vietnam) a major event in American history, should not block the expenditure of funds to provide a center to explain that events role in history. Especially if such a center/museum will generate far greater benefits to the local economy than the support provided.
selise @ 82
This is the basic problem of trying to look at “microtrends” and tinker with policy objectives to obtain those voters. By doing so you are likely to lose hard-core supporters in your other “microtrend” populations. In the past one could pull off such pandering, because people might not learn what you were saying in a dinner speech to that targeted audience.
Today, that speech is likely to get out and backfire on you.
And triangulation doesn’t satisfy any of these groups….although it’s the natural outcome of following pollsters who suddenly find some anomalous “group” of “voters” based upon shared demographic variables.
Here’s the problem with this approach. Those “groups” may not be “exclusive” to participation in other groups. Thus one may already be speaking to the values of the majority of that group, and the others, despite their demographics being shared with that “target” group, may actually be quite resistant to any appeal since they belong to other groups whom they identify with quite strongly.
Thus a “soccer mom” who is also from a Southern, Pentacostal church and military family with a long history of unflagging conservative voting…isn’t gonna likely change for an election.The “soccer mom” status is ephemeral…she has kids who play soccer. Big deal. And most of those “soccer moms” might support you without any major push IF you support the issues that speaks to their other “identities”.
But one has to really appear to be championing these issues and groups, simply because shifting from a CORE philosophy will sem insincere and manipulative….pandering.
Folks like Penn are “packagers” of image. We really need to have candidates who speak from their basic philosophies and agendas and let US sort them out.
katymine @ 104
I personally know a LOT of Hillary “supporters”. Will I get attacked for saying that they are quite common in Sacramento? That being said, many support her because they think that she
a) will win the primary (self-fulfilling prophecy),
b) reminisce about how well they were doing in the Bill Clinton era,
c) don’t really know much about her positions on specifics ~ except that they hear the Republican soundbites about her and think she’s liberal (which is okay)…or moderate (if they no longer swallow what the right wing blowhards have to say).
Some of these folks swung to Bush in prior elections…but have become utterly disconcerted with their support mainly due to war and economic issues that they personally experience (the published inflation rate doesn’t include all those real necessities of life…gas, utilities, food, rents, school tuitions, insurance).
They think “if life is good for all these other people…why am I not getting there”? They tried to attain that lifestyle on credit and by getting those variable-rate mortgages. Now they are looking at their neighbors getting foreclosures and getting bankruptcys and start thinking about those new rules on bankruptcy pushed through by the Republicans.
They aren’t progressives for the most part…they care most about their own economic success and their own families. In fact, they grumble about the homeless and really do think that they work harder than other people. They really do accept the meme that “if you haven’t done anything wrong, what would you have to worry about” (while at the same time knowing that they likely have a few no-nos hidden away on their tax claims, undeclared income, or other things they wouldn’t want the neighbors to know about). Believe it or not…there are a lot of these people out there in America.
Most aren’t yet politically active, either in primary or the general campaigns. But if you ask them they say “Hillary”. No bumper-sticker or signage…they’ll put them out a week before the election and maybe send in a couple of bucks then.
That’s why Clinton is doing so well in these surveys. These are likely voters…but they are not going to be the type that go out and shout about their support.
The people we interact with on these blogs are, for the most part, a self-selected group. Many have had candidates in mind for years before now. Some are actively involved in particular campaigns. Given the general tone here I doubt that many people who do support Clinton actively would stick around. They’d drift off elsewhere. So when we talk to one another we will, of course, reinforce each others positions and it will seem that we are a lot larger (or the norm) .
I sometimes see people putting INTERNET polls on this and other sites and I think, what value do these things serve. there was one poll that used a Zogby poll of internet subscribers to the poll…in other words, it was made up of people who intentionally requested to be surveyed by the Zogby polls from VISITORS to its website. That’s gonna be a group heavily weighgted with Camapign junkies and pundits…including some that would not be averse to imputting several different requests to be polled under different handles andemail adresses.
I recall FDL supported one such survey just a couple of weeks ago. Are these exercises in trying to suggest that they are the true reflections of what the public thinks? Or are they efforts to discourage the support of other candidates?
Not sure…but maybe FDL should get into the phone polling business and start calling people at random and find out what people really think if they don’t trust the results of the polls out there in the MSM. But when you get so many, with different methods, and questions that broadly show trends…well it’s hard to explain all of that away to statistical manipulation. There is something to accepting what you see and then acting to change THAT.
Because if we go by what we see in the polls on FDL and DKos then we really don’t have to work very hard…Edwards will win the Democratic primaries by huge landslides because of the “flawed” MSM polls. Conversely, those that support Edwards, Obama, Dodd, Richardson, Kucinich, Biden, etc. who aren’t fooled by the internet polls and look at the MSM polls know that they will have to work very hard to change things. They will need to go after soft Clinton support and motivate people to get out. They will have to also start eliminating other progressive rivals from the campaign, without alienating the supporters of those candidates. It’s gonna be a very hard effort, folks.
LetterMan @ 176
Lot’s of supporters of Benson here. BTW that picture of “Teamster Benson” on the website is classic and classy!!!! That could be used as a poster in just about every blues bar and road joint along the Richardson Highway! Betcha Don Young won’t even know what hit him!
