Rahm Emanuel, the man who thought the war was a loser issue in 2006, who recruited 10 of the 20 Democratic House members who vote with Bush most frequently, the man in charge of the highly successful “House messaging” (see YouTube above), is now evangelizing that dealing with immigration is a dog for Democrats:
Frank Sharry, executive director of the National Immigration Forum, an influential advocacy group, blasted Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., for suggesting that immigration could be a losing issue for Democrats.
Sharry was responding to an article Tuesday in the Washington Post where Emanuel, who chairs the House Democratic Caucus, said that the immigration issue is a big problem because it “captures all the American people’s anger and frustration not only with immigration, but with the economy.”
Emanuel also said immigration has “emerged as the third rail of American politics” and that “anyone who doesn’t realize that isn’t with the American people.”
Sharry said in a press release that he didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when he read the article.
“Rep. Emanuel threw immigrants under the bus because desperate House Republicans are planning to run nasty ads about Democrats and immigration,” Sharry said.
Sharry also compared Emanuel to Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., who is leading an effort to offer a path to citizenship for young illegal immigrants who complete high school.
I know we’ve been there before, but I guess we have to go there again. Last week Rahm was at a bootcamps for Democratic House candidates and preached the value of running from the immigration issue. And lo and behold, Eric Massa emerges from said bootcamp and releases a statement going against the entirely rational and reasonable Spitzer policy on drivers’ licenses for immigrants.
Once again, from all of us to all of you, thanks Rahm — for leading the party into a ditch.

Zed?…and I can’t bear Rahm
Jane!
Rahm’s a fool.
We’ve got to get a primary challenger on him and get him out of there!
peanutbutter @ 3
we’ve got to get democrats to stop listening to him, we have to stop giving him a voice in strategy
Or just a competent leader. Pelosi, Reid, Rahm…throw ‘em all out when the next session of Congress begins.
If Rahm were only 1% as smart as he thinks he is.
Hey, who appointed him, and how can we get rid of him? How can we get his credentials yanked ASAP?
Anybody got a plan?
Blue America seems like a great way to erode the influence the DLC has, too…
I am old enough to remember a time when the Democratic Party stood up for the underdog. Bobbie Kennedy or Hubert Humphrey would turn in their graves if they heard the bullshit coming from the mouth of Rahm.
Emanuel is either a complete idiot or a complete Republican.
Ish @ 8
Absolutely.
The DLC needs to own this session!

When I saw the Headline of the post, I thought “now THAT is snark.” Thanks, Jane.
Gerry Connolly, Chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, is running for reelection, and has denounced Republican demagoging of the immigration issue. Connolly is leading by something like 20 points.
Republicans are flogging this issue in neighboring Prince William County and there is a real possibility that they will lose. If the Democrats win in Prince William it will be very strong evidence that this issue doesn’t play the way Emanuel thinks it does.
when someone wants so badly to be a republican, wouldn’t it be an act of kindness to help them achieve their goal?
tw3k @ 10
What’s the difference?
While immigration/illegals is not an easy problem to address, framing it in a positive way should be.
The fact is, the safety of our borders, and immigration should be separated out emotionally in the talking points.
Giving workers who are needed a dignified and safe, legal way to come here and work needs to be addressed.
Protecting our borders needs to be addressed in another way entirely. I
don’t know why this hastn’t been done by some fine Demo by now.
It shouldn’t be that hard to get out front of this, if, as Ed Deevy above says, we only channel Bobbie Kennedy.
I cannot resist the thought that Rahm is a Trojan Horse Democrat.
twolf1 @ 17
:o good point!
itwasntme @ 18
Excellent point.
I find this comment about HRC rather interesting:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21482196/
“She is not averse to firing people, although the list of people she has directly told to leave is short….
One person who did not get the message — or ignored it — was Representative Rahm Emanuel, the Illinois Democrat who served in several prominent roles in the Clinton White House. Early on, Mrs. Clinton had doubts about several young aides, including George Stephanopoulos and Dee Dee Myers, the press secretary, because she thought “the kids” lacked the experience and gravitas their workplace demanded, according to a senior Clinton White House official.
She was particularly suspicious of the brash Mr. Emanuel. According to another high-level official in the Clinton White House, Mrs. Clinton instructed Thomas F. McLarty 3rd, the chief of staff, to fire him. But Mr. Emanuel insisted he was not leaving unless Bill Clinton himself told him to go. The president never did,…..”
Alice @ 19
That sums it up better than idiot, dino or other.
I’m thinking that in a battle in the Democratic Party between Elliott Spitzer and Rahm Emanuel, my money is on Spitzer. Eric Massa should think about which of the two can provide the most benefit to my future and react accordingly. (Note: It ain’t Rahm)
Of course, I’m also thinking that Rahm was probably not a big fan of Spitzer’s efforts against corporations while he was AG of NY.
Let’s not forget that Rahm Emanuel is Hillary Clintons house “bitch”.
selise @ 16
Yes!
peanutbutter @ 3
Perhaps a Democratic Preznit could appoint Rahm to some fancy post in his/her Administration in 14 months?
tw3k @ 10
These are not mutually exclusive. He might be both.
tw3k @ 10
Does it hafta be “or”?
TeddySanFran @ 28
lol, well… another good point :)
TeddySanFran @ 27
Ambassador to Iraq? Or maybe South Africa? Darfur?
My cautionary message: Dems should tread carefully on this issue. Nikki Tsongas won a special election in a safe Masachusetts House district with only about 52% of the vote. Immigration is such a local issue.
No reasonable, decent person wants to build fences or “round up all the illegals” but Democrats need to have responsible programs backed with big money for local communities to deal with the consequences of immigration.
Dems also need to fight back when Repubs try to frame the issue and paint Dems as the party of the illegal immigrants. The way this issue gets framed is vital. Also, the Dems need to link the exploitation of immigrants by big business to an expansion of worker rights and labor friendly laws. Midwest factory workers who worry about jobs being shipped overseas need to see how and why they should care about immigration and rights for immigrants.
Emmanuel made his living as an oppo research guy and general political hack. H is not a policy person and really not much for strategy.
Is he a Saboteur? Even Rove knows and has publicly acknowledged that not embracing immigration will be a back breaker for his Party. Now why would Rahm want to risk alienating so many constituents? The 30% who are afraid of the scary brown people won’t be voting Dem and clearly fall outside of the “swing” voter category.
will no one rid me of this troublesome Rahm?
Jesus, someone put a dead girl or a live boy in his bed already.
Only slightly OT, from Salon War Room:
This is exactly what drives me crazy about the Dems. Why aren’t we better at this?
Ed Deevy @ 9
I am old enough to remember when the Democratic party was home to the racists and segregationists..it’s slow but we are making some progress.
peanutbutter @ 3
On most issues, Rahm is relatively progressive. If there’s a more progressive challenger, fine. I’d just rather that he be removed from ALL positions of party leadership.
Bob in HI
I saw Emanuel on Bill Maher recently. He had his arm around the back of the chair of the man sitting next to him. He leaned into the guy in the most oppressive and rude way. He thinks he projects strength but I find him really creepy.
IrishJim @ 34
I am unable to dismiss this suspicion.
jim o’connor @ 32
Should frame it with globalization and monetary shifts. The direction the dollar is headed migration will be a way from the USA.
Jane (nyc) @ 1
OK, so we’re in agreement that Rahm is part of the problem, not part of the solution. Why is there no discussion of forcing him to deal with a primary challenge?
I’d just rather that he be removed from ALL positions of party leadership.
my view precisely.
dakine01 @ 31
How about Ambassador to Patagonia? Don’t we have an embassy in Antarctica? I mean, someone has to look out for the penguins, don’t they?
Bob in HI
marymccurnin @ 39
kinda like this?
(h/t TeddySF in Late Nite)
burnspbesq @ 42
Due to the BSO presidential debates?
I knew Rahm had to go as soon as I saw him recently with Jon Stewart as he melted down into even mixing up his talking points and sound bites and randomly patching them back together, lapsing into complete incoherence.
Un-fucking-believable how an utter dissembler and incompetent like that can rise so high.
Okay, I can’t take it anymore. Who’s Zed?
Alice @ 43
I imagine it’s pretty high stakes poker to challenge for these leadership positions, yes? If you fall short, the incumbent is in a position to cause you a lot of problems.
tw3k @ 41
amen.
but that means addressing the fucked up neoliberal trade policies that the dems have been pushing for over a decade. dems like clinton have helped create this problem (increased migration to usa combined with job and social services pressures here) – somehow we’ve got to find a way to address this one head on.
dov12348 @ 47
Wasn’t it Mark Twain who said that if you don’t tell lies then you never have to remember anything?
punaise @ 45
Yes but he has a bit more gravitas than Little Boots. Not in a good way though.
Durbin was recently invited to my nephew’s Chicago school for a photo op in support of S-CHIP.
My sister is the on the local school board (an interesting Chicago construct) and hung around to help.
Rahm invited himself along a couple days in advance leading Durbin to invite *every* available Representitive.
Methinks Rahm and Durbin are not so close.
Anyways, when Rahm was introduced as “the Democrats’ Karl Rove” he smiled.
Personally I always thought he could double as a snake oil salesman and the snake.

I have yet to hear much good of him. He seems to be involved in all the Congressional derailing of stuff that we want to happen.
dov12348 @ 48
In earlier versions of WordPress (the software the blog uses), when a new post went up and no comments had been posted, the first comment displayed as number “0″. This got morphed from zero to Z to zed. The software has been changed so it doesn’t display like this any longer but traditions linger on.

Beady little reptile eyes.
Really an unpleasant person.

Well, I was offering positions that he might be enticed to take, not the ones he can justify turning down.
I don’t know why we let “these democrats” get away with calling themselves democrats.
Maybe we should think of a name, other than Bush-dogs, to label them to a wider audience.

Steve-AR @ 75
I’m not that into the weeds on Emmanuel, but as I understand it, his problem is in his leadership role (as someone said above) and not in his normal voting.* But he can create more problems by bad leadership than he can do good by voting right. So replacing him would be a net plus if the new person were a D but had no leadership role (assuming we can’t convince the Ds to demote him).
*Always remembering that some votes are more important than others.
Realistically the Republicans should support undocumented labor because it keeps wages low, but they also know they can get re-elected on this issue. If the democratic party introduced a bill calling for a $100,000 fine for each undocumented hired in this country, the issue would quickly change.
TeddySanFran @ 79
“Soot yourself”
RAHM EMMANUEL –
Is a lying, motherf*cking hypocrite. He is the Daley machine mojo who recruited Republicans (like Heath Shuler, the knuckle-headed ex-football player in North Carolina) and the Republican-turned-Democrat asshole who replaced Mark “the sexual predator” Foley in Florida. Good job, Rahm.
Rahm Emmanuel, the dictionary definition of a douchebag.
TeddySanFran @ 79
Prolly the only reason he shows up at disasters.
Just to clarify my point, most immigrants are hard working and good neighbors and deserve the right to become citizens, but somebody needs to call the Repubs bluff. By penalizing those that hire undocumented workers, the issue takes on a different meaning.
JPL @ 81
Since when are employers required to enforce the law? Thought that was a government job. I say this because there’s no way that private employers could be held responsible for hiring illegals, since there is no reasonable way they can determine who they are. Forged documents are just too easy to obtain.
eCAHNomics @ 80
I agree he is “bad news” in the leadership. His use of the “conventional political wisdom” has had poor results.
JPL @ 80
They do support it. They only shout about it for votes. In all their years in power, they did nothing. They just want it available to run on every two years.
Rahm Emanuel is about as much of a Democrat as James Carville, and only slightly more of a Democrat than Joe Lieberman.
Emanuel is being bribed under the table to keep the Democratic Party as permanent minority. What could be more obvious?
Give me Rom, Spaceknight anyday!
Steve-AR @ 74
i’d just like to point out that “leaders” who arrange for legislation we hate while voting against it are not necessarily well represented by their “progressive score”
not saying that is the case, just that it may be.
eCAHNomics @ 86
I use an iMac with the Adobe Creative Suite 3. I have a great scanner, color laser printer, a color photo printer, and laminating stuff. I noticed that too. I thought he seemed like he expected everyone to listen and agree with everything he said and be awed by his his “insider knowledge”. How to say? You know. He acted like his shit don’t stink.
BobbyG @ 92
IIRC, the phoney Kansas driver’s liscence that my son bought in Times Square at age 18 cost a lot less than $100.
The companies that hire undocumented aliens know perfectly well that this is what they’re doing. Anyone who has ID, good or not, will not accept pay below the minimum wage, with their room and board being withheld from that pay, and threats of being reported to the ICE for protesting.
A lot of big companies are doing just that. It’s “competitive labor practices” that lets them make more money.
PLovering @ 93
Bad time to be Europhobic!
Rahm Emanuel: approximately one third of the reason the Democrats are seen as useless wimps.
The rest is Reid and Pelosi.
(BTW: why is the GOP able to get away with being the ‘daddy party’? Every public position they have seems to be either ‘I want my daaad-dy’ or ‘My dad can beat up your dad’, neither of which qualifies as ‘adult’.)
Rahm Emanuel is about as much of a Democrat as James Carville…
I hate to say it but Clinton is resposible for both of them, and the DLC.
eCAHNomics @ 86
They can’t check SSN’s? Also, some companies pay illegals in cash so as to avoid leaving traces. If the companies wanted to do things legally, they can. The problem is they don’t. And the fines are a joke.
Speaking as a constituent of Rahm’s, I REALLY wish a credible candidate would line up to run against him. So far, hasn’t happened. But I am embarrassed by him almost daily. Sigh. I did write him a nasty letter (er, email) after Pete Stark was forced to apologize, calling him weak and idiotic. I don’t know if that was helpful. But I’m tired of writing letters pleading with him to wise up to the reality on the ground …
selise @ 91
You could be right..I just looked at the most fascist business rating I could think of; The National Association of Manufacturers. For the 109 Congress, a lot of Thugs scored 100%. At the good end of the score, Barney Frank and Barbara Lee scored 0%…Rahm scored 13%. If he is a shill for the worst corps in America it doesn’t show up in his votes.

perris @ 106
roflmao… eeewwwww
What fine did Mitt Romney pay for having undocumented workers do his landscape? Although he said that he didn’t know that the landscaping firm had used undocumented workers, wouldn’t that be his responsibility to find out? The Republicans are trying to have it both ways and somebody needs to call their bluff. If the Democratic Party introduced a bill on accountability to those that hire, the repubs would cower.
Well, if Rahm is correct, then Durbin is doing a very good imitation of Paul Wellstone. Durbin is up for re-election in 2008, but he doesn’t seem to be afraid to take on at least one aspect of immigration, with his recently rebuffed bill to give immigrant children a path to citizenship.
Unfortunately, Rahm’s head-in-the-sand approach isn’t going to work. Sooner or later, the candidates are going to be asked about their positions on immigration, and the Democrats would be better served, IMHO, to think about some intelligent responses now rather than hope that the questions are never asked.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 101
Illegals maky up SocSec #s, and I’m not sure how easy it is to verify them. My friend who runs a mfg bus in VT that employees over 100 tells me it’s impossible and I’ll take his word.
It is true that the feds know where many of the illegals work–like cleaning Wal-Mart stores. But for obvious reasons, they don’t go after the ones who work for big donors.
perris @ 103
Wel, it is different and unique – and very funny.
Is he a fool or a mole? That is what I want to know. Anyone know which?
JPL @ 108
IOKIYAR.
The only time not properly handling your personal workers counts against you is when you’re a woman and they’re looking after your children, because women belong at home.
What is the point of this guy? Does he not get what Congress is supposed to do? Or is that just a laugh because Congress dont give a damn what their “club” is “supposed” to do. Write some good laws ahole.
“Running from the immigration issue” is, in effect, running from the ghost of Lee Atwater, he who perfected the “southern strategy”. But what else do Rethuglicans have to sell to the electorate, other than bigotry? If the GOP would campaign openly in favor of class-based elitism — denying quality health care and education to the majority of the U.S. population — how many people would vote for them? Therefore, pandering to the Rethuglicans’ wedge issue of race is not the smartest way to disarm them, is it, Rahm?
eCahn, Several years ago I did merchandising for a major retailer and a few of my temporary workers, were escorted out because of document problems. It often took several days to verify but back then it could be done. I left in 2000 so copies are probably better. I think that immigrants are important for our economy but what the repubs are doing is attacking the immigrant rather that the hirer. IMO, they are playing the race card.
Weird news of the day: Shatner disappointed he won’t be in new Star Trek movie.
That is something else I am wondering about, even more than about what is the story with RH.
I thought Shatner asked to be killed off in one of them so he wouldn’t have to do anymore. I thought that was the sensible thing to do. The rational thing. The sane thing. Has he changed his mind?
Can we beam Rahm someplace where he won’t cause problems? Arrange for a planet to fall on him (that is what did Kirk in, right?)
wesgpc @ 117
I always thought they missed the boat on next generation with the holograph
I thought they should have brought him back in there
man, he could really act before star trek got the best of him…he was in a movie called the brothers something or other and he was genious
and the twighlight zone appearances were sublime
my acting coach told me that after star trek he just didn’t trust any director and wanted to do it his way
now he plays a clown, at least he knows he’s playing a clown though
It is reassuring to see Jane take the gloves off on this. There is something disconcerting, a seemingly unholy alliance afoot via the likes of Emmanuel, Lieberman, and, particularly, Mrs. Clinton that foreshadows a new administration that is a trojan horse for the same money party thugs that pull the Butcher of Crawford’s strings.
When Mrs. Clinton aligned herself with a mass murdering warmongering lunatic the likes of Mr. Cheney to placate the A*P*C neocon freaks like Podhoretz, it is high time to get off at the next stop and keep running. No syrupy southern charm from Bill will suffice. Hillary is one of them. Not one of us. Edwards is right.

He’s a political troll who needs ta be ignored.

I seem to remember hearing that this maladministration’s paper-verifying system took about three months to determine whether or not they were real. They probably decided that the employer should be responsible because it was easier than admitting they can’t do it.
JPL
Don’t want to get into a back & forth with this, as my info is all second hand from my friend who runs his own company. But it occurs to me that forgery technology may have outpaced detection technology, as the former responds to market signals and the latter is run by a bureaucracy. Not to mention the fact that large employers of illegals are home scott free as long as they pay off the right pols.
eCAHNomics
Clinton and Rahm represent the Money Party.
They wormed their way in as quasi-populists
(a trivial task when running against Bush 41 in a contracting economy)
But once in power we got NAFTA and the self-sabotaged Hillarycare.
Ignore the words, pay only slightly more attention to the votes and closely examine the net effects in labor and healthcare.
No no, I think you’ve all got it wrong. Rahm Emanuel knows exactly what he’s doing. Confronting these dangerous issues like immigration, gay rights, abortion, or, you know, anything of substance, is just baaaad for Democrats. We need to concentrate on more bipartisan stuff…like children’s health care…oh wait…education…no, no…well the ASPCA could use some support. Puppies and kitties are sure to help us win!

Gosh, ya mean we can’t trust Rahm? Golly, really? Ummm… no kidding. Anybody that thought they could was fooling themselves. Same with H. Clinton. Of course, Emanuel understands that when we add in our spouse, sons and daughters, and ask our friends and neighbors for their invaluable political support, our votes on Election Day will tally in excess of 7 million votes.

The closeness of the Tsongas race had little to do with immigration. Tsongas got the same vote percentage (maybe even a couple points higher) than Deval Patrick (the current Dem Governor) did. It’s a district that has gone Republican in statewide races before. Don’t believe the hype…it wasn’t immigration, it was a lackluster candidate who hadn’t lived in the District very long.
I don’t have the details, but it looks like Rahm is trying to put another Tammy Duckworth clone into the IL-06 race against Roskam.
Emmanuel reminds me of the neocon foreign policy–no matter how many times you fail, you just keep pushing the same strategy over and over.
burnspbesq @ 42
Because he’s in a quite secure district. But, that doesn’t mean we couldn’t look at the other members who voted him into his leadership position. If we can find some of those who are weak or particularly offensive, then we might primary them and reshape the House from the roots.
Emanuel is an Illinois problem, that has been hurled on all Americans. We can’t get rid of him, only Illinois can. He speaks with such certitude and conviction, one immediately doesn’t notice how wrong and out-of-whack he is. Brought to national attention during the Clinton years, he hangs around demanding attention and respect. He has Nancy Pelosi’s undivided attention. Seems she can’t make a move without him.
C’mon Illinois. Hire Terminix if you have to, but rid the nation of this spider Emanuel.
Lets not forget that RAHM fielded his own DEMPRIMARY CANDIDATES in 06′that got squashed by netroot progressives in those primaries. Liberals in red meat states like Colorado, winning on gay marriage issues. Can you fuckin believe it?
RAHM is Nancy’s weasel lap dog. Or is it the other way around? Can’t tell since Nancy has been sitting on her ass with Harry since November. Suckers for the SURGE. RAHM has that phony expression of seriouseness. So practiced and contrived. Frankly, Rahm is a cockroach running around the House floor. Someone should head him off and cut his ass down. There’s a halo around his noggin that spells out C O R P O R A T E……………….

Taking on immigration may be the only way to deal with the pressure cooker of jingoism and xenophobia surrounding this issue that Republicans could exploit in 2008.
