Here’s to peeking under a lot more rocks — if ever a town needed it, it is Washington D.C. Via the WaPo:
…Waxman has become the Bush administration’s worst nightmare: a Democrat in the majority with subpoena power and the inclination to overturn rocks. But in Waxman the White House also faces an indefatigable capital veteran — with a staff renowned for its depth and experience — who has been waiting for this for 14 years.
These days, the 16-term congressman is always ready with a hearing, a fresh crop of internal administration e-mails or a new explosive report. And he has more than two dozen investigations underway, on such issues as the politicization of the entire federal government, formaldehyde in Federal Emergency Management Agency trailers, global warming, and safety concerns about the diabetes drug Avandia.
“We have to let people know they have someone watching them after six years with no oversight at all,” said Waxman, 68. “And we’ve got a lot of low-hanging fruit to pick.”…
“For the administration, and for a lot of others, people need to be careful now,” said Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (Va.), the ranking Republican on the committee. “Someone is looking over their shoulder.”
Who knew that simply going to work and doing your job could be so damned frightening? Here’s to Rep. Henry Waxman, his ace staffers, and all the other folks on the Government Oversight Committee who understand what the meaning of…well…government oversight really is. Bravo.

I <3 Waxman!
Waxman!!
That WaPo article was the best thing I read in the paper today.
lil ol me?
Reid stands in Waxman’s shadow.
Oh and by the way, Tom Davis of Virginia, this was YOUR JOB that you didn’t do for the last 6 years. Good call on not running for Senate next year against Mark Warner.
I don’t know what it is about Henry Waxman – on the one hand, he looks like a gopher, but on the other hand, the fact that he looks like a gopher who is actually undermining the Bush/Cheney Administration is sort of heartwarming.
Toby Wollin @ 6
gopher the cajones!
egregious @ 5
Grrrr, Tom Davis…and his wifey too!
Good evening, Christy. Is the Peanut tucked in for the night?
LoudounLib @ 8
I have been an early and ardent supporter of the opponent for her state senate seat, Chap Peterson. We’re bringing her down too.
Virginia State House and State Senate elections are this coming November 6. Stay tuned for some surprises.
I wish that Waxman could use all that low hanging fruit to make some impeachment pie.
Waxman is certainly building a name for himself while he provides the type of oversight that America wants to see.
Certainly, there are enough crimes already to hold this administration accountable – with the clock running out, what does Waxman actually have to show for it?
Sure – he cannot make the rest of the spineless dems do their job, but don’t we really need to see some meaningful outcomes too?
Otherwise, it’s just be another “fitzmas” – a lot of bloggin’ and hope, but little or nothing in the end.
I sure do like James Taylor.
littlebear at 12 — Wake up on the crabby side of the bed today, did we? Considering there was no oversight at all for the last six years, exposing any of the Bush Administration’s wrongdoing is an enormous improvement. And it is a helluva lot of wrongdoing…
egregious @ 10
And I’m out here in Herring and Poisson country, totally supporting them too :-)
egregious @ 10
This level of action is so important yet easily forgotten, especially in the South, imo. Egregious is everywhere!
WAXMAN!
Dada, dada, dada, dada;
Dada, dada, dada, dada;
WAXMAN!
What secrets does he have hidden away in his Waxcave?
But now can we actually enforce those lapsed subpoenas, please?
Bob in HI
bob at 17 — Did you miss Condi dragging her taut behind into the committee today? *g*
btw, we have a treat coming up for everyone in a bit…not saying what it is, because I want it to be a surprise. *G*
egregious — Yes, I thought the Tom Davis quote was particularly galling, given that it was his lazy ass NOT doing the oversight for 6 full years prior to Waxman taking over the committee mid-January this year.
Did ya see Condi’s face when Waxman told her, well your spokesman “has” “cooperated” with our committee (or something like that)…I think she turned grey!!!
Go Waxman!!
Eureka Springs @ 16
Well, unlike Alaska, I gotta do this one. This is my own district.
Boy Red, that vacation did you well!
LS at 21 — Yes, and I’m hoping for some highlight tape on that one…
Christy Hardin Smith @ 14
No christy – and being insulting doesn’t actually show yourself to be “miss cheerful.” But please excuse me if I didn’t convey enough appreciation for the fact he is doing something.
Celebrating his work is important, but talking about accomplishing something is even more so – some are concerned that endless investigations into every malfeasance of this administration is actually what they want while they “run out the clock”.
Isn’t that also an important part of this dialog? There are important things at stake – including the fact that future presidents will use the lack of meaningful action against our chimperor to justify the same or even worse abuses.
Shouldn’t this be part of the dialog?
Toby Wollin @ 6
I adore the man. He’s a bulldog; it’s not obvious when he’s reading a statement, but when he’s questioning a witness he clearly believes is lying, he goes for the jugular. He’s probably the best thing C-SPAN3 has going for it. IMHO.
raven — I read this article this morning and laughed out loud at the Davis quote in it. Jeebus, when did simply doing your job well become something akin to a miracle in DC?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 18
with, to quote the infamous imus, her “james brown hair and freaky teeth”. i’m sorry, i detest imus, but that was just plain funny. she just can’t seem to get her “do” right. a breck girl she’ll never be. give it up. condi. and while you’re at it, ship out on that oil tanker they named after you, for some reason…???
I expect after six years of nada in oversight of the royals, these well intentioned dems are dancin as fast as they can. it just ain’t fast enough. too much water over the dam , and now the dam’s busted.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 27
I was thinking of the volume of your posts, I love it!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 20
And I’m trying to think which of the many, many things he might have investigated that is the most egregious. I keep coming back to Walter Reed. This is local. He HAD to have known.
littlebear — It wasn’t intended as insulting, it was supposed to be snarky. I’m a little tired, though, having spent the last two days combing through information on torture and extraordinary rendition, so you’ll have to forgive me if I need to add in emoticons to make my prose more clear.
It’s The Peanut’s bedtime, and momma needs an early one today as well, I’m afraid.
i wish waxman would investigate torture and extraordinary rendition, the lies that were used to justify the iraq war, and i wish he’d investigate sibel edmond’s case.
i’m just finding it really frustrating that what seems to me to be the most important investigations aren’t happening. at first i thought it was just that it would take a bit of time, since there was so much to investigate. but now, i’m starting to lose hope. :(
Toby Wollin @ 6
Don’t gophers know how to dig around in the dirt?
Selise, take heart, it’s happening. One man, no matter how brave, cannot overturn this criminal enterprise overnight.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 27
since the end of the clinton administration?
OT: SCHIP Is Back – And California Needs It
eCAHNomics @ 33
I was waiting for that one.
JPL @ 13
Wasn’t that great?
selise at 32 — There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes that hasn’t borne fruit as yet. They hold public hearings when they have evidence that needs to be aired out publicly. That doesn’t mean if you haven’t seen a hearing on it that the issue isn’t being explored, it may just mean they haven’t found a good nut to crack on it yet.
A good investigator doesn’t prosecute his case until it is solid — or unless their hand is forced too early, which doesn’t turn out as well. The good thing about Waxman and his staff is that they understand both strategy and making something stick. (Would that other committees would learn more about both…)
Christy Hardin Smith @ 31
Agree – me too – I do appreciate the dialog you have created here. In many ways, people like you are is responsible for people turning against the smirking chimp – your work is important and greatly appreciated.
It is my opinion that one of this administration’s most powerful tool is the endless amount of corruption and the wholesale destruction of our democracy that they are involved with.
There are simply too many fires for the public to understand, too many crimes to investigate, abd the mainstream media is “catapulting the progaganda” each and every step of the way.
Personally, I would rather see the Dems find a few crimes, fully investigate and document them, and throw the crooks out now before they get away with any more.
At least then they have made an important statement to the next gang of criminals that is sure to follow.
egregious @ 34
that’s just my problem – i don’t see anything on those three most important issues. ‘course it could all be happening out of sight, which would make me very happy.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 14
But, but, but, Christy, I think what littlebear is saying is that until someone is adjudicated for any of this wrongdoing, they’re not guilty of a damn thing. (Based on the theory that, in this country, one is innocent until proven guilty.) Until sent to a court, not really adjudicated. When can we expect the actual red meat?
Bravo Christy. I don’t know how you find the time to do all you do. You are an inspiration.
littlebear @ 40
here here
Wonder how things would be if Speaker Waxman were in charge?
bobschacht @ 17
Speaking of unenforced subpoenas; do we have any info on the HJC subpoenas and contempt charges against Harriet Miers and Josh Bolton? It seems it has fallen through the carcks.
Waxman is 68? I had no idea.
Frankly, after slogging through the last few days of crap news coming on the heels of a lovely time away on a short vacation…I needed a cheery post and a boo yah. So, yay.
votes aren’t there on schip, huh? any republicans switch? I just did a quick look at the roll call and couldn’t pick out anyone. enough of the compromising the compromise and start beating them about the head with this fucking vote.
littlebear, many of Waxman’s investigations would’ve produced results already, if they hadn’t been stonewalled by the Unitary Executive’s pixie dust, nor if they testified fully and truthfully!
Ann in AZ @ 42
And when they get pardoned?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 39
i hope to be shown to be wrong… and for the first 6 months i wasn’t worried. but without anything on what seems to me to be the most critical issues… i am getting worried.
i think it was sibel edmonds’ campaign a couple of months ago (to get people to call waxman to ask him to follow through on his previous committment to investigate her case) that made me realize that maybe nothing really was happening (in public or behind the scenes).
well, fingers still crossed…. but i’d feel better with some sign of action on the war lies, torture and rendition, and sibel’s accusations.
Waxman got Condi to admit that she requested the report, because she knew she couldn’t testify to the fact that oversight had been handled appropriately in the Department of State. I thought that was pretty stunning to hear her admit it, especially when it flew in the face of Negroponte’s comments and someone else’s…
He also got a few, “I hadn’t heard that” comments out of her. Artfully done.
Great moments. It was like seeing a “crack” appearing in the Administration’s “stone wall”.
Helen — It hasn’t fallen through the cracks according to folks on Conyers’ staff with whom I spoke about it last week. Conyers is definitely keeping it in mind — it has just been preempted lately with other legislative work on the floor of the House, I think — at least from what I can determine asking around before I took my break. Am hoping to get particulars on it in the next few days and, if I do, will let you guys know what I hear…
CTuttle @ 50
Good point – but then again – that by itself should have been grounds to take some meaningful action.
I know that he cannot drag the democratic leadership with him, but we could throw the bums out on that alone if people dems were willing to do something.
Just a guess of course. But if Waxman were calling the shots, perhaps we’d be in the midst of impeachment hearings.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 48
oh, shit. if you’d have warned me, i would keep my fingers off the keyboard.
(((christy)))
and to all the law people…..anybody know anything about bankruptcy law?
raven @ 51
At least if there is meaningful legal action, a strong statement is made even if there is a pardon.
Let’s not kid ourselves – chimpy is not really our problem – its the interests that he represent that prefer to stand in the background. Let’s be realistic about how politics works.
The same political/economic forces that thrust an AWOL alcoholic/cocaine addict into the oval office as our “war pResident” via stolen elections will regroup and try to do it again.
The bigger picture is that if chimpy gets away with all of this – future administrations have a blank check to do it all over again and take it even further.
Is anyone else concerned about that?
selise @ 32
Sibel Edmonds might be a possibility but torture is probably Judiciary and rendition Intelligence. I don’t see any movement on those until January 2009 at the earliest.
watching boosh gropping everyone in the fire zone on KO gives me the creeps.
Can some expalin what the rational was behind electing Pelosi Speaker?
Helen @ 46
not on the schedule yet – according to pow wow’s first comment on previous thread.
and christy – you might find pow wow’s second comment on the previous thread helpful (fisa analysis).
littlebear @ 59
I’ve been concerned about it since before Tricky Dick hauled his sorry ass up on to Marine One.
OldCoastie @ 61
is he making an ash of himself again?
I’d rather have the light of a Waxman moon than the darkness of Junya’s shorts.

raven at #51:
Good point! Still, there’s a difference between being able to say guilty of a crime and having no judgment at all against criminals.
LS @ 53
Don’t forget – she got away with saying “who could imagine 9/11″ while admitting to the memo “Bin Ladin Determined to Strike US”
Oklahoma kiddo @ 62
it seemed like a good idea at the time?
Here’s an off topic laugh…at least I thought it was funny…
Today, I went out to feed my 3 mares in my back field, and I saw some big grey things…at first I thought they were deer, but noooo, they are 3 big donkeys and a baby donkey that have moved in from somewhere…I have no idea how they got in there…so Mr. LS is putting a sign in our neighborhood that says, “Anyone lose your “asses” er “donkeys???? call, xxx-ssss”.
littlebear @ 69
Heh. You are speaking to the queen of skeptical here. Yeah, and it amazes me still…Time will tell.
littlebear @ 12
thou art surely jesting?
Hugh @ 60
fair enough. i’ll partially back off waxman and spread my frustration around.
Helen @ 46
Those incidents are a real slap in the face. There was another character or three that has ignored subpoenas too. Any gubmint type that ignores a subpoena should be locked up like any ordinary American would. We supposedly all live under the same laws. Do we really?
And the sneaky pardon of Libby (commutation) was another. All bark and no bite as far as the eye can see (including Waxman). We remain infinitely hopeful for justice.
littlebear @ 55
Inherent contempt charges would go a long ways, until that point, Waxman can issue all the subpoenas he wants, but, both the executive privilege claims and the DC-USA’s unwillingness to enforce the contempt charges seriously hinder him…!
well, I love waxman but I think he should be more aggressive when they refuse or avoid subpoena
I cannot believe meyers is not in jail for refusing to appear
OldCoastie @ 69
I thought so too. I lived for many years in the Speaker’s area and voted for her everytime. Perhaps I was a fool.
Heard an interesting speculation today on why the missing $8 billion in bricks that were sent to Iraq during the CPA has never been investigated. Speculation appeared in Barlett & Steele article in Vanity Fair, but I heard them here:
http://www.antiwar.com/blog/20…..-steele-2/
The speculation is that some/all of it went for U.S. black ops and that congress in in on it, so they won’t ever investigate. I’ve been wondering why that’s appeared on no one’s radar screen, and that speculation is as good as any other possibility.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 62
With hindsight – it could have been to enable the criminality to continue. Sorry if that sounds too negative, but she is definitely part of the problem now.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 62
yes, but not in christy’s happy thread. ;-)
OKK at 62 — Would you have preferred Steny or Rahm? Because that was who else was angling for it — and with either of them, SCHIP wouldn’t have gotten a push at all. The problem isn’t Pelosi on her own — and pretending it is to find a convenient scapegoat gives excuses to a whole host of Blue Dogs and cronyism that needs to be rooted out instead.
We don’t have perfect leadership, lord knows, but believe me when I say it could have been much, much worse…
OldCoastie @ 69
Because she, along with Steny and Rahmbo, knows where the money is buried.
selise @ 73
Using some of that low-hanging fruit as the spread, no doubt. *g*
Oklahoma kiddo @ 56
thank you. if they’d just start impeachment hearings, all else would cool down as everyone rushed to cover their behinds. And the 2 execs (provided cheney wakes up from his nap in time) would send bombs to iran as fast as it could so george could take credit for the rapture to come. The only viable straightjacket for these maniacs is impeachemnt. They don’t need the votes yet, just the hearings.
perris @ 76
It’s obviously not up to him. It’s up to the leadership.
I got the distinct impression that Condi “wants” to talk to Waxman…”privately”…maybe a “help, we can’t do anything about Cheney!!!”…she seemed unusually open to discussion.
Re torture, at TPMmuckraker, Leahy and Durbin say they will not vote for Mukasey if he doesn’t say waterboarding is torture. The article thought that the SJC would not vote out Mukasey to the full Senate with a favorable report.
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/004564.php
raven @ 64
Excellent point – cheney is definitely picking up where they left off, isn’t he. After the first stolen election, when I heard about the “dream team” in the monkey palace and realized how many had ties back to nixon, I was concerned.
I must admit – we have seen more progress stopping them than I would have imagined a couple of years ago – the criminality, abuse, and propaganda seemed to be a run-away freight train at that time.
But we do need to see action because otherwise the precedence is fully in place to end the “American experiment” with democracy.
LS @ 70
Progressive dems, looking for a more congenial home? You send out good vibes LS!
littlebear @ 59
pardonnez- moi, but there IS no “further” after Iran is toasted. So are we.
Laura Doty @ 89
Maybe it’s a “sign”!!! Heh.
may @ 72
No – very serious – we need more than moral victories at this point, though I am not trying to dampen enthusiasm for Waxman – just trying to make sure the dialog includes meaningful ACTION too.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 81
Maybe so, but I’d feel much more comfortable, I think, with John Murtha as her second. I get the feeling he knows how to twist arms, and I think that’s what she lacks. (I do hope you understand I’m talking figuratively here, not advising physical arm twisting. I’m talking about the kind done by Tip O’Neill or for that matter, Lyndon Johnson in another type of job.)
LS at 86 — Well, that is doubtful, I must say. I have always thought that Condi was afraid of Cheney — and she also knows he isn’t afraid to go to the mattresses in a fight.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 81
See more happy news. Things can always get worse. *g*
Hugh @ 87
bernhard has an interesting analysis.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 81
So then the choice was either Pelosi, Hoyer or Emanuel? There were no other possibilities?
littlebear at 88 — Think for a moment how much further down the road they would be if they hadn’t been slowed down so substantially by oversight. And then imagine how bad things would be.
And then pause for a moment to smile. (It’s what I do for myself on rough days. And it works.)
LS @ 70
LS- thanks for a good laugh! Life goes on… :)
Oklahoma kiddo @ 62
The Center Dems needed a figurehead who would not rock the boat. They figured that to win the Presidency us lefties had to be let down easy and our votes taken for granted as the Center Dems tried to appease Bush and grab the center.
Who would have thought that 70% of Americans would end up opposing the war? The Center Dems are deathly afraid of another 9/11 attack giving Bush his ” cough” mojo back.
The Center Dems accept defeat and have prepared for it. We believe we can win and prepare for it. Maybe the Center Dems need a happy day to get their confidence back. But what can make them happy?
After all another 9/11 happens it is Bush who has left Ossama alone in Pakistan while our troops waste their time in Iraq! We just need to get this message out. “Ossama/Carthage must be Destroyed!”
Christy Hardin Smith @ 31
Christy, thank you from the bottom of my heart for spending your precious time doing this. I’ve been writhing through the first chapters of Shock Doctrine’s descriptions of torture funded/used/exported by our country for many years (abetted by people in my own profession). It’s an agonizing read, and I appreciate anyone willing to do research/write about it. You’re tops.

A little more than a month ago, with the anniversary of Sept. 11 approaching and fears of a new al Qaeda attack rising, some U.S. intelligence and military analysts thought they had found one of the world’s two most wanted men just where they last saw them six years ago.
OKK at 97 — This isn’t fantasy football for hell’s sakes. I can’t just make up my own choices. I’m telling you what the reality was back in January…
littlebear @ 68
If she could not imagine 9/11 then why was the NSA wanting everyone’s phone records inquiring minds want to know?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 94
I’m not sure, but I think that is sort of what I’m saying. Condi seems afraid of Cheney…she wants to pursue diplomacy, he wants to attack everyone. Her only way out of all of this warmongering is to get the word out of the WH secrecy mode, and to tell someone. But she can’t say that in public, which explains why she said so many times…behind closed doors, even when Waxman was saying that these matters could be discuss publicly…does that make sense, or am I just confused?…(which is not unusual considering the world we live in, and I forgive myself *g*). I sensed she was sending a message…it was not really necessary for her to keep repeating it.
at 92
it’s not a put down but from here
it looks like the ground is being carefully and remorselessly prepared by clear eyed savvy political proffessionals.
good job!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 94
I imagine that all of chimpy’s “tools” have any number of things in their background that make them easy targets for retribution – probably a key requirement to “get in the club.”
In fact – that might be how chimpy was selected too – surely enough in his background that he is the perfect tool.
IMHO, failing to acknowledge that this is not just all about the current criminal cabal that resides in the white house is a serious mistake.
LS @ 70
Could belong to Republicans. You know many of them can’t find their ass with both hands.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 102
Thank you for the lecture.
Christy -
Eg brought a smile to my heart this morning when she first provided the linky wrt Mr. Henry and his crew; am glad it had the same positive effect for you.
Laura at 101 — It’s bad enough having read through it in dribs and drabs the last few years, and reading through legal opinions with sterile language tidying up the conduct. But immersing yourself in the nastiness of it for two straight days is incredibly depressing, even if you already knew most of it.
It was a very worthwhile chat — on a documentary well worth promoting. But it was a painful preparation nonetheless…
4 people in CA arrested on arson charges. I suppose according to Faux they’re all members of al Qaeda.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 94
Who would want to “go to the mattresses in a fight” with that splendid example of American Manhood, Dick *long pause* Cheney? Not even Ms. Rice, I would deeply hope.
I have to leave now to find some mental disinfectant.
*shudders, slinks out of office*
eCAHNomics @ 111
Nah…they will be from Iran or something…/s
Christy Hardin Smith @ 98
Respectfully – they are still getting away with a great deal – I am not sure the criminality has subsided at all, but then again, keeping the public in a daze with their actions might be their strategy to “run out the clock” in the first place.
If what you are referring to is that they seem stuck with the “backwash” at less than 30% support, you are spot-on.
I don’t see that the criminality, treason, war-crimes, and crimes against humanity have slowed down in any way.
OKK — If a three sentence response has become a lecture, then my time in law school was an eternity. You asked, I answered. You don’t want to know the answer, then don’t ask.
Christy at 110: Yes, it is very painful. Necessary pain for us all to experience as we become educated–and stay aware from now on–but especially hard when you have to dwell in it. Thank you again. And don’t forget to take some time to de-tox and replenish!!! (Keep this stuff out of your dear joints!) ; )
Oklahoma kiddo @ 108

How about them Red Sox????
eCAHNomics @ 118

Okay, that’s it. I tried a cheery post, because we all need to stop being so damned depressed and look up for a change. But everyone is set on being gloomy Eeyores and seeing half empty glasses. So I am off to watch a movie with Mr. ReddHedd who is much cheerier…and I’ll see everyone in the morning.

I’d be happy if they would just keep their grubby hands out of our collective pockets – the BILLIONS AND BILLIONS that cannot be accounted for would go a long way for paying for children’s health care, or for that matter, a single payer system for all.
raven @ 120
Personally, I think Dick Cheney is a man with an obsession. He’s also a man with a pacemaker-defribulator installed in his chest. He’s also a man who falls asleep in meetings, which considering his pacemaker, is not a good sign in my opinion, in terms of long-term health.
Who knows, perhaps we’ll get lucky.
Toby Wollin @ 119
That game was pretty painful…ouch…Mr. LS says that baseball is a game of patience…as I was burying my head in the pillow of…”I can’t stand to see a team that has 10 straight wins be beaten this way”….
Wow…I’m scared to watch the next game!
Much truth to the epigram that a cynic is a disappointed idealist. I personally strongly believe in the power of idealism. If we don’t have a picture firm in our hearts about what a good world COULD be, how on earth can we aim for it (or, how can we aim for it on earth). Still, there’s a difference between naming things as they are (like them or no) and giving way to a bitterness that ends up defeating ourselves or encouraging defeat in others.
Nice to have a few ways of dusting oneself off before going back into the fray.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 116

Oklahoma kiddo @ 131
Lighten up.
The moon is full — can you tell? :)
raven @ 137
Thank you Raven. I’m with you. OKK, that really came across as too strong.
Oh
deerdear.Christy Hardin Smith @ 94
Its wrong to think of Cheney or any Bushie as tough they are Bullies who act tough as long as they think nobody will fight back. We must confront them with a smack to the nose, like a dog!
Notice Darth was quite quiet and sane during Gerald Ford and Bush 1’s presidentcies it was only when Fredo/Bush 2 came in weak and unknowing were Darth and the Neocons able to take over.
Give a craven weak man power and watch him abuse it! My guess is Darth always wanted to be the Bully even as he toadied up to those in power.
Tithonia @ 138
I had that exact thought- but if my sources are correct, total full moon is tomorrow. I just can’t wait ;)
littlebear @ 115
littlebear — for what it’s worth, i’m with you. and i don’t think being pissed and wanting ACTION like a lot of folks here are is “depressing”. You can’t be “cheery” and angry (read “motivated”) at the same time, can you? i dunno maybe you can. anyway, i’m with you on the need for real results and soon. stop the f=== f—ers in their tracks asap. like yesterday, henry and conyers!
night
Christy – I we do appreciate your blog and work here – hope you find time to relax with your “peanut” and share some bright, colorful board books and picture books – you can never start too early.
Is there anything really more fun and rewarding than sharing early literacy skills with a young child?
Personally, my favorite are the 2 original Corduroy books by Don Freeman – Corduroy and Picket for Corduroy. Each is a soothing salve for the soul.
Eureka Springs @ 143
searching for a zed..searching for a zed..
can’t find it
Hugh @ 126
Are you referring to the ball or games? I think the answer is “yes” to both.
Toby Wollin @ 147
Whoops.
I like your typo littlebear. Corduroy on a picket line, eh? Must be the one after he gets a pocket!
Valley Girl @ 144
I think it’s 12 MN..largest full moon of ‘07.
Valley Girl @ 144
According to my astro calendar the exact point of the full moon is 12:51AM EDT, Friday morning. I.E., a little more than threee and half hours from now.
Valley Girl @ 133
Been here since the very first of “fitzmas” – if you are telling me these are widely accepted positions here back then or today, you are absolutely wrong.
Well, I had a lovely day on Sauvie’s Island (in the mighty Columbia river). I saw two blue herons and 3 bald eagles, one just 30 feet above me.
Hi Christy. So glad we’ve got a tad of oversight back.
smapdi @ 154
Sounds lovely – I saw a great blue on my way home from work today and a red tailed hawk.
kittykitty @ 144
Agree – why otherwise well-educated and articulate people cannot host a celebration of progress while discussing the need for more continues to astound me.
Good night
lahoma
littlebear @ 152
No – many see it as “negative” and I see it as an important part of being grateful for the progress we make.
Night OKK & Lahoma
Oklahoma kiddo @ 158
Sweet dreams and best to you both.
Laura Doty @ 149
Wasn’t Don Freeman a UAW leader?
littlebear @ 157
Maybe because it is very easy to read into posts and what may seem reasonable to one person sounds like smart ass bullshit to another, ya think?
littlebear @ 152
littlebear- let me rephrase that then, because maybe I just filtered out a bunch of comments (seriously)—
I do know what you are talking about. Honestly, I really do, and I share your concerns.
More OT:
Oh, and as someone mentioned earlier, all of humanity’s manned space assets are being commanded by women today, and they did a perfect job parallel parking.
One last OT, whoever mentioned the publicradiofan.com, THANK YOU!
Kirk is upstairs
Valley Girl @ 163
I am sure we all share much more than what we disagree on – this is one of the most respectable and troll-free comment boards on the ‘Net.
Guess its a limitation of text messaging across strangers – christy was right about the emoticon thing.
Col. 1 – Sox 0
Maybe Mr. LS is right, patience…I have no preferences as to who should win, but I sure want to see both teams play well…may the best team win…
New post upstairs, I promise this time. *s*
These notes come flying hot and heavy. Fast writing, quick reading, easy for misunderstandings. And very few cues with which to judge people’s intent or tone. It’s easy to take offense–or inadvertently give offense. And it ain’t the mods job to filter that stuff out…it’s ours to work through.
Too, it’s hard to keep working day in and day out in a world where, no matter what one does, someone shows up to talk about what ain’t done yet. We all need time to celebrate the good and the beautiful, even when it’s only temporary or partially done. How else do we juice the batteries?
Laura Doty @ 169
Speaking only for myself – I “juice the batteries” by acknowledging where we have successfully been and talking about where we want to go.
I would like to add this comment
I had grave responsibility to call the office of Rep. Waxman.
His staff is ace, did not look cross eyed, and actually thanked me!!!!!!!
I spoke with offices of Senators, and congressman all in a week of a flurry of activity.
You can tell if someone is for real by the people around them.
All is not lost.
Save the US constitution, Save the 50 States of the Union, Fascism is hear and now.
Thanks Congressman Waxman.
littlebear, I do believe you have a picture of where you want to go. I read some of your comments, though, as expressed in the negative, as in where you don’t want to go, what you don’t want to see. Sometimes, using the positive–what you do want, what you will do–says it clearer for others. Running things down all the time–in my experience, I mean, when I do that–can be a real downer for others around me.
I followed Sibel very closely.
She has the dope on a lot of the shit going down in DC, the FBI, the Israeli and Turkish lobbies, the drug trade… she has lots of dots connected and it’s not what they want to hear… it’s really gonna blow the lid off things.
She’s too dangerous to be heard.
She’s a profile in courage if there ever was one… Valerie take note.
Laura-
I hope you are making copies of your FDL comments.
Your book is writing itself (so to speak), whether you realize it or not. xxoo
VG you are very kind. And you’re right, I don’t realize it. You and David seem to see something I don’t…..But thanks for the encouragement!
Laura Doty @ 173
If talking about what we need to see is “negative”, that is on you. I didn’t say anyone was wrong or that things were bad – virtually no one else in the thread did either.
If this wasn’t so serious – many would agree – but as you can see by reading the thread, the things I express are not mine alone and it is reasonable to talk about bigger issues.
If someone really just needs self-congratulations and warm-fuzzies, perhaps should not blog about political issues.
Laura Doty @ 176
Laura- I won’t get into a long story about this, but from what I’ve seen, people (often women) don’t realize that their own qualities are special or unique. Because, what they do, and the way they see things is so much a part of them, as in “that’s just me” that it doesn’t seem remarkable or unusual to them.
You have a unique voice. Go for it.
Hen-RY! Hen-RY! Hen-RY!
Littlebear you said, “The bigger picture is that if chimpy gets away with all of this – future administrations have a blank check to do it all over again and take it even further.
Is anyone else concerned about that”?
From the moment Pelosi uttered her infamous words that impeachment was off the table I immediately thought that the bastards were going to get off scott free. That once the Genie is let out of the bottle it’s impossible to put back in. So there is nothing holding back future administrations from doing the same or worse without fear of retribution.
I am really hoping that quite a bit is going to happen to this crew when (if?) they leave office. Once that happens Bush can no longer pardon anyone and could we even see a convening of a war crimes tribunal?
I know people joke about Bush buying a place in Paraguay but down deep I think he knows that he might have to do a midnight run down there if certain things surface. Considering what has come to light so far it’s not inconceivable to believe there are things that were done that will leave us with no choice but to arrest a former president and vice president.
Never in my wildest dreams would I think a president would do what this man has done. He makes Nixon look like an Eagle Scout.
Hey – Paraguay was good enough for Mengele, so why not?
eCAHNomics @ 112
The San Diego branch?
Waxman is a bright light in an otherwise pretty DIM Congress. A true hero for our times.
Hugh @ 60
I’m very disappointed that Sibel Edmonds hasn’t been high on Waxman’s list of priorities. She deserves better than she’s gotten.
