Eleanor Clift uses her recent Newsweek column to rehabilitate the reputation of Rape Gurney Joe Lieberman, presumably for the benefit of fellow Villagers who’ve forgotten just what dear Joe did wrong. It must be a puzzle to the short-attention span cocktail party hostesses and Sunday gasbags who can’t exactly recall why decent Democrats despise Joe, even though they know there’s a bunch of people you can’t invite if he and Hadassah are headed to their drawing-room for brunch.
But Villager Clift tries her best to remind Washingtonians of RGJoe’s sins against the party, while getting essential facts wrong. She writes:
Lieberman himself is scorned by Democrats for adding the ‘Independent’ label to his Democratic Party registration.
Um, no, Eleanor: Connecticut Democrats removed the Democratic party label from Joe’s name in a primary on August 8, 2006. The Independent label he added to his name was a necessity. He was denied his party’s nomination, by those pesky voters.
Regarding RGJoe’s support of Maine Republican and war-enabler Susan Collins, Clifty sez it’s all about “good character:”
Lieberman doesn’t feel obliged to do the Democratic Party’s business and help knock off Collins. She’s in a tough race, straddling opposition to the war with loyalty to the president, and she’s at the top of the Democrats’ target list. Another politician in a similar bind of conflicting loyalty might choose to stay neutral, but Lieberman is upfront with his support
Don’t you find it fascinating that Eleanor neglects to mention that Lieberman’s upfront support of Collins energized the anti-war base in a way that matched the dollars generated by Lieberman? MoveOn raised $350,000 for Tom Allen simply because RGJoe was hosting a DeeCee lobbyist-stuffed fundraising event for Tom Allen’s opponent. (And we helped!)
The power of Joe, indeed. He might be upfront with his support, Eleanor, but do you see other 2008 candidates pleading with Lieberman to do fundraisers? I thought not.
Equally unclear on this Senate’s organizing rule, Eleanor puffs up RGJoe’s importance to Harry Reid’s remaining Majority Leader, not knowing (or caring) that Democratic control is firmly established regardless of party or personnel changes:
In a 51-49 Senate, he’s the Democrats’ firewall. If he goes, so goes their majority.
Finally, Miss Clift resurrects that chestnut Lieberman used last fall to scam Nutmeggers to believe he was really still a Democrat:
Lieberman votes with the Democrats 90 percent of the time.
Except, of course, when American troops are dying in a foreign desert for the amusement of our fratboy President.

Ooo…la la!
lucky me, single digits,
hey TSF! DC hostesses can’t invite…haha!
“American troops are dying in a foreign desert for the amusement of our fratboy President.”
Well said. Too bad the MSM still pretends like that isn’t true. They won’t ever ask Bush why members of his own family are not at risk in his vanity war.
Clift: “…but Lieberman is upfront with his support.“
Eleanor can shove Likuderman’s “support” up her hadassah.
TSF!
A little clarification, she sounds really confused about just who Shortride represents.
If it were up to DC hostesses I doubt I would be invited to remain a citizen in my own country.
Hey, I really popped in to send well wishes to anyone affected by the fires in SoCal. Hope Howie and others are faring all right. (I’m way farther north in the SFBay Area, for you right coasters, that’s like being in Richmond va.)
Nothing more egalitarian than a natural disaster.
quick point if I may;
this statistic means nothing because the democrats and republicans might vote together on issues, so if the dems and repugs vote together 89 percent of the time that means lieberman sides with the democrats only one percent of the time
the real statistic would be the percentage liarman votes against the republicans
and even that is decieving since some votes don’t matter lieberman can vote democratic and not affect the outcome
therefore the only statistic that means anything is the percentage lieverman votes with the democrats where if he voted the other way the democrats would loose
that’s the only one that matters, he is a judas sheep, a republican trying to make believe he’s a democrat
OT – sorry Teddy – been busy -waiting for a meeting that evidently isn’t gonna happen – I really didn’t have a full appreciation of what’s going on in SoCal- just saw CNN for a sec – holy crap, this is serious – hope that all Firepups and their loved ones are ok…

In a 51-49 Senate, he’s the Democrats’ firewall. If he goes, so goes their majority.
Bullshit. There’s plenty of cowards to go around in the D Senate. Stop giving this particular asshole so much credit…
jayt @ 11
on top of that he votes with the republicans whenever it matters and their the democrats majority is already ruined by that fact

Good lord, the worse the poll numbers get for the corporatists the less you hear from the majority opinion. In fact, I am gunna actively work against all of the above and I AM gunna vote!! We hafta hit the streets folks…we must force the Democratic Party leadership to make a choice: us or the fascist thugs. Read up on the last days of the Wiemar Republic…I think God is usin’ history ta force us ta get it right this time!

Eleanor Clift is a disgrace as a journalist. It’s no wonder Teh Big Punkinhead likes having her on(or it is Tweety?).
Great post. More Beltway punditry that would be right if it weren’t so wrong. I liked the part where she said Lieberman was distrusted by both sides. Any examples where he’s stabbed the Republicans in the back? I can’t think of any either. As for the Democrats, no matter how many times Lieberman does them dirt, Harry Reid never seems to mind.
My thoughts go out to all those in Southern California or who have friends and relatives there.
Can anyone name me *one* thing that the vote of JoeLie actually decided?
There’s plenty of blame to go ’round – and I, for one, cannot understand Mary Landrieu (D-fucked over and curiously-quiet) voting for a single goddamned thing proposed by the GWB adminisration – yet she does…

Yeah, I hope everyone gets that my post is a veiled slam at MSM. And I’m ready to gag if my eyes are subjected to Britney’s ugly mug yet again.

Unfortunately for him – there are plenty of spineless Dems’ who keep stealing his thunder by caving in before he gets the chance to show his own particular brand of treachery…
Thanks very much TSF. I spotlighted it to Clift, Alter, and Fineman. If anyone else knows anyone at Newsweek who might be receptive, please spotlight it to them too.

Bush can stay home if he wants… but if he wants to send a tanker plane, that would be all right with me.

Arnold probably told him to stay away, he can handle it better than Bush could ever dream of…plus, Bush doesn’t care, he just wants to drum up more devastation in the rest of the world.

Like DiFi Landrieu is a Repug in Dem clothing. I still see the sheet sticking out from under her dress. Her Dad was pretty bad also. And, her brother is just as bad. Poor Louisiana. What choices! So, they went with Bobby Jindal for Governor. Frankly, if he turns out to be an honest man and keeps his promises, I don’t care if he is Repug just so the people in southern Louisiana can pull themselves up. Other than ask for outrageous amounts of money after K, selling the people out to the oil companies for years thus destroying the marshlands, I don’t know what Landrieu or other Dems did for Louisiana. Yes, there is plenty of blame to go around.

now, it is that a half million people have evacuated San Diego…

It is unfuckingbelievable….where are you? How close are the fires? Can you get out? What is happening?
OC, the military is sending C-130s.
I was just watching that DC-10 tanker waterbombing the fires near Lake Arrowhead. (It didn’t look all that large a plane up there.)
The Super Scoopers are dealing with the stuff around Castaic. (We are just a tad short of equipment for this sort of thing.)
The Marines are dealing with Pendleton (and their own evacuations: it’s coming in from the DeLuz road area on the east), as well as people coming through from Fallbrook (it’s been evacuated too: I know people there).
If George wants to come play fireman, he’ll have to bring his own firetruck. All of ours are taken.

OldCoastie @ 51

OldCoastie @ 56
Oh no. They would never fight a fire. That’s for the good guys to do. Like in New Orleans, they could be sent in to a natural disaster to “keep the peace” guns drawn, of course. Lots of illegals in that area.
Just heard that Bush will go to CA on thurs. If he brings his brush clearing costume, help is on the way!
This is all so bad, so bad….

Eleanor Clift, professional ‘liberal’ journalist really should investigate the world of shredded carrots in lime jello salad at church functions.
Are the shredded carrots getting shorter? thinner?
Is the ‘orange’ colour actually more of a ‘peach?”

I have vowed to use Pete Stark’s phrase as often as possible. There is so much that’s done for the President’s amusement — for instance, his upcoming trip to California is primarily for his amusement.
What possible use will it be to anyone but him?
This is wildly offtopic, but tpmmuckraker.com has the lowdown on the House Judiciary hearings, where we find out “when it comes to investigation and indictment of local officials by the [Department of Justice], the numbers are staggeringly disproportionate: 80% Democrats; 14% Republicans; and 6% Independent – that’s 5.6 Democrats investigated for each Republican: 5.6:1 when the ratio should be 1.2:1.”
Former G.H.W. Bush Attorney General Richard Thornburg said he had an example of a politically motivated prosecution.
But you won’t hear it on the MSM.
LS @ 83
I suspect they are all stuck on the 5 freeway… a lot of ‘em have come north.
TeddySanFran @ 78
Teddy,
When I first read the column, I thought HoJo had probably cornered Clift at a cocktail party and started whining about how nobody loved him any more.
newspaperbrat @ 81
Rahm smells somethin’ burning, and it ain’t the fires in California.
Probably that limb he’s climbed out on.
OldCoastie @ 87
That is what I’ve been so worried about. No reporting about it though. I guess the stadium is like the Green Zone or something.
dakine01 @ 88
Then he should go eat worms.. Cute song.
I think Eleanor must be wrong on that 90%, because from what I’ve seen he votes 100% Reptilican on any vote that matters. Plus his abhorrent work (or rather non-work) on the Heimat committee. And we won’t get into how he probably tucks the Chimpnit in bed and tells him a story of how great the war is going.

I’ve been looking for a good recent aerial/satelite photo – if anyone has a link for that I’d be grateful.
This is terrible for our FDL people not to mention the entire population there. I’m starting to get that “need to help” feeling. I think panic set in when I heard Bush was going there. Terrible flashbacks to K. While we hear about the expensive homes there, San Diego also has a large working class population and lots of “illegals”. They never have as many escape choices. It also has a very large retirement community and many of them are not of the wealthy class.

I hope they are doing a better job evacuating than during Katrina. My entire family lives in New Orleans and I know that black out feeling when communication is out. Even evacuating the day before the storm hit, the traffic was bumper to bumper, crawling. I’m not thinking of going there (not wise during the middle of a crisis) but opening homes here in the north so people have a place to go. My family stayed with people in Baton Rouge for a week before they could go stay with friends. There must be groups starting to organize around here. We have an active Red Cross.
OK RBG,

Raven, Tell me more about tweety and LT Gov of CA.
The evacuation pattern’s a bit different…people from the edges are coming into the city areas, not everyone in a city (many without cars, for example), needing to leave a city. Also evacuations toward the coast and not necessrily up north are possible (eg many evac destinations). Still, the traffic up the 5 and the 15 isn’t going to be pleasant.

Love it. Like I said over at kos, if Pete Stark and the congressional Dems won’t stand behind such a statement, it’s up to us to do so.
Clift and the rest of the Villagers are out of touch with their own zip code.
a recurring nightmare is the certainty that after achieving a LIEberman-proof majority in 2008 that democrats will continue to treat that scum-of-the-Earth rat bastard with respect and deference, awarding him positions that he has no business holding.
.
Joe Lieberman is an odious gasbag who is willing to kill hundreds of thousands of people (mostly Iraqi, but also American) for oil and Israel.
America would have been better off, of course, if we hadn’t preemptively attacked Iraq. And Iraq certainly would have been better off. But no, Joe, had to protect Israel (which doesn’t need protecting) and Dick Cheney had to protect “our oil under their soil.” And Bush, the Moron-in-Chief, did their bidding.
Eleanor Cliff must be a Zionist fascist like Joe. There’s no other reason to defend him unless you’re whoring for Mossad.
Maybe Pete Stark has some more impertinent talking to do.
Say,
People are dying in San Diego so Bush can send kids to Iraq where they’re having their heads blown off for his amusement.
It’s a bitch when the unwashed voters take away your party label in that little thingamagig called a pri…..pri….primary election or whatever.
Eleanor Clift needs to find a good assisted living facility in the Village.
Even the Neo-Conservatives over at PNAC (Robert Kagen) pointed out that Lieberman before 2000 was castigating the Democrats in PRIVATE, and formulating public foreign policy positions that were, in essence, identical to their own.
http://www.newamericancentury……ec_026.htm
Some choice excerpts, and my comments.
“It may be impolite to bring this up right now, but just for the record: Joseph Lieberman thinks the Clinton administration’s foreign policy during the past seven years has been feckless, inept and immoral.
Lieberman has never put it quite that way, of course, at least not in public.“
But even PNAC knew that Lieberman was a manipulative stealth Vice-Presidential candidate who lacked integrity…although they agreed with him, funnily enough.
“Now that he’s Al Gore’s running mate, don’t expect… Mr. Integrity to admit any differences with the Clinton-Gore administration. But a quick look at Lieberman’s record in the Senate leaves no doubt what he thinks of the way Bill Clinton has managed some of the biggest foreign policy crises of his presidency.”
“… Lieberman was so dissatisfied with Clinton’s Iraq policy that he joined Trent Lott in sponsoring legislation to provide Saddam’s opponents with $ 97 million worth of aid. Clinton officials, of course, hated the idea, but it passed the Senate overwhelmingly….[In a letter co-signed by many of Congresses most right-wing individuals] ” He wrote Secretary of State Madeleine Albright that he was “deeply concerned that only a small percentage of the resources made available by the Congress for anti-Saddam activities . . . have been tapped by the administration.”"
Of course, we now know that most of this money went to creating the Chalabist propoganda machine of exiles that dummied up all sorts of informant reports like “Curveball” that got us to invade Iraq. Almost none of the money supported internal opposition to Saddam, or those groups located in Iran. Of course, no one really believes that the Chalabists and exiles in the West represented much more than an extremely small number of individuals…most making millions from these very same “grants”.
” For two years a frustrated Lieberman worked with Bob Dole to try to force the administration to lift [violate] a U.N. embargo against supplying weapons to the Bosnian Muslims…but the Clinton team fought him every step of the way…”
Actually it was a NATO-sponsored embargo to try and prevent all parties in the conflict from receiving weapons. And the biggest group attempting to smuggle weapons (and militants) to both the Bosnian Muslims and the Kosovars…was al Qaida…who was attempting to gain a foot in the door of Europe.
“Lieberman thinks Clinton made a tragic and cowardly misjudgment when he ruled out the use of American ground troops during last year’s Kosovo war…Lieberman was one of a handful of senators who cosponsored John McCain’s bill to give Clinton authority to send ground troops to Kosovo….”
But…but! Why would Clinton oppose this…if it only gave him the “authority”? Yet HE DID! Because he knew that it would inflame the situation.
” Lieberman also joined Mitch McConnell on a bill to provide $ 25 million worth of arms to the Kosovars to defend themselves. Clinton officials deep-sixed that one, too.”
“Lieberman thinks the administration was too slow to send American troops to East Timor last year.”
Wait? Wasn’t the invasion of East Timor by Indonesia given the “Green Light” by Gerald Ford and Henry Kissinger? Oh…but that was before the discovery that major oil reserves might lie in the Timor Gap. An economically devastated Timor L’este, would be far more willing to offer concessions there at bargain-basement prices than the Indonesian State-Run Pertamina. Clinton quite realistically realized that intervention before elections would be a disaster, and that Australia was more likely to avoid being drawn into a conflict wth Indonesia.
“Lieberman thinks the Clinton administration’s Russia policy..that he proposed legislation (again with Lott) to impose sanctions on Russia, and exclude Russians from the U.S. space program, if the Russian-Iranian connection was not severed.”
Ooh! That would stop Pootie-Pooh! No cooperation with the Space Program? The same Soviet space program which has, of course, bailed out US missions time and again, despite the repeated failures of the Space Shuttle.
“As ranking Democrat on the Senate Government Affairs Committee, he coauthored a report with Fred Thompson last year accusing…Clinton’s top advisers, including Leon Panetta and Sandy Berger, for waiting two years to inform the president of evidence they had received about Chinese espionage. “There was, in fact, a Chinese government plan to move money into America’s congressional elections–with the clear intent to affect America’s policy toward China.”
As if huge amounts of corporate money, including Chinese banks purchasing much of the US domestic debt…hasn’t resulted in a Bush Administration that has completely ignored Human Rights violations of China for the last six years. All while the Prescott Jr., and brother Neil, as well as Daddy and several cousins actually joined in business ventures, including the sale of semiconductors that Dubya exempted from the export security regulations, with the relatives of those in the regimes politburo).
And none of this even hints at his unwavering support of Israels most notorious acts.
Lieberman was a stealth “liberal” and walked right in tandem with the PNAC Neo-Conservative policies. Most of his liberal domestic policies are over two decades old.
