Some Sesame Street phone call humor for everyone…
Looks like the Southwick nomination will be up for a vote in the full Senate tomorrow, according to my sources on the Hill. From the Clarion Ledger:
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Friday he would schedule a vote this week on the nomination of Mississippi Judge Leslie Southwick.
Reid’s press secretary, Jim Manley, said the long-awaited vote could come as early as Tuesday….
Southwick’s main supporters, Mississippi Republican Sens. Trent Lott and Thad Cochran, are optimistic the judge will be confirmed.
“(Lott) thinks this is a positive move,” Lott’s press secretary, Lee Youngblood, said of Reid’s decision to schedule a confirmation vote.
He said Lott and Reid spoke Thursday night and agreed to move forward on the nomination.
Southwick’s supporters expect Democrats to try to block the proposed confirmation with a filibuster, or extended debate. So, Reid will first call for a vote on whether to cut off debate.
At least 60 senators must vote yes on that motion for Southwick’s confirmation hopes to survive.
Readers know the circuitous route that the Southwick nomination has taken through the SJC — and of my unhappiness in how this has proceeded. See here, here and here for a refresher.
Bottom line at the moment? Despite the likely requirement for a 60 vote margin (which I have now confirmed with three different sources on the Hill), the fact that this vote is coming at the behest of Trent Lott — and that I cannot track down anyone with a line on a whip count — makes me mighty unhappy about how this is rushing toward a vote tomorrow. So I’m asking for a favor today: call your Senators and tell them to vote no on Southwick. And then send them an e-mail. And a FAX. And call their local office. Whatever you can do today.
No cloture, no Southwick. Just say no.
It is especially important to target the Democrats in the Gang of Fourteen and the ones who voted for cloture on Alito. Those are likely waffle targets if I’ve ever seen them. Direct contact information for every Senator can be found here. Working Assets has some bullet points on why Southwick is a bad choice. You can call your senators toll free via the numbers that katymine found:
1 (800) 828 – 0498
1 (800) 459 – 1887
1 (800) 614 – 2803
1 (866) 340 – 9281
1 (866) 338 – 1015

Christy!!!
A very good morning to you Christy.
I’ll call after work. Thanks for the heads-up Christy.
Hilarious video! Now I’m all inspired to make my calls.
Good morning. Diane Feinstein’s office responded to my email, and said that Feinstein will NOT vote in favor of Southwick.
egregious @ 5
When you call, be sure to have that youtube playing in the background.
Good Morning, Christy! My eyes are open now. I had my third cup of strong tea.
I’ll put in a call, to Harry, no less.
Loo Hoo @ 6
Interesting…
I’m starting to have some real doubts about Reid’s leadership. How did he end up this way? What did we do to deserve him?
I’d be particularly interested in how Russ Feingold deals with this. In the past, he’s been deferential to presidential nominations, but it’s also clear he is fed up with being lied to, having documents withheld, and otherwise obstructed by the administration.
Wisconsin constituents might want to make your objections clear to him, and suggest that the time for granting deference to the Bush administration on their appointments has long passed.
Loo Hoo @ 6
Well, isn’t that just damn nice of her!
Emails sent to Kyl & McCain…. not willing to waste good “free” line time for these two… McCain will not show up for a vote and Kyl the walking Bush Bot will of course vote for hate and oppression since THAT is his MO.
Now to hit those who really count….
I still don’t know how Reid was elected Senate Lead. Many active Nevada Democrats were surprised. No one can tell me to this day how he was chosen or better, why he was chosen. Can you?
Ann in AZ @ 12
But will she vote against cloture?
So DiFi says she won’t vote for Southwick?
Why did she vote to send the nomination to the floor then? Just for the thrill of saying ‘Aye’?
P J Evans @ 16
I get the impression that a lot of Dems are knuckling under to the Rethugs’ “up or down vote” mantra. And they’re cowards, too. But I repeat myself.
Reid and Lott share a lot. Just a tidbit of Nevada political history. Nevadans called themselves “Mississippi of the West”. That attitude still prevails.
anyone checked out Glenn Greenwald today?

Ann in AZ @ 12
I know. After screwing up so badly in the first place…
Loo Hoo at 6 — That’s great. But will she pull a Lieberman and vote for cloture? THAT is the important vote at the moment in my book. If anyone gets confirmation on that vote, I’d love to know what it is.

I’m trying to get the answer to that. But her phone’s damn busy in SanFran and in DC…
Christy Hardin Smith @ 21
Of course she’ll vote for cloture! Then she’ll vote against confirmation in a losing effort. She will justify all this by stating the nominee was entitled to an up or down vote, and that she really believed he would not be conrirmed.
Dump Pelosi
sorry for OT – Bush to request additional $46 billion for wars.

twolf1 @ 26
Motherfucker. Bush, that is, not you.
twolf1 @ 26
Didn’t we just do this?
From Feinstein’s staffer:
“I don’t know whether the Senator will vote for cloture or not, sir. She hasn’t released a statement.”
“So you don’t know.”
“Yes, sir. She hasn’t released a statement to that effect.”
Biodun @ 29
So if they are saying that she will vote against Southwick, but not saying how she will vote on cloture, safe money says…

Citizen Hardin Smith and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Am I the only one out here gettin’ tired of callin’ tryin’ ta pressure DLC Democrats and DINOs into voting for their party’s interest and the interest of their constituents? Shouldn’t there be folks like Durbin,Leahy, Kennedy, Dodd, Feingold, Harkin, Levin and yes even Chuck the Bookkeeper Schumer et al puttin the pressure on these corporate shills? Where are the progressives doin’ the down and dirty WORK of politics on the floor, raisin’ hell and makin’ One Hung Harry Reid look like the ineffective stooge that he really is??!Shouldn’t we expect the progressives in the Senate ta do some a the hard work of politics that they want us ta pay for with contributions and grassroots support?
I wonder if we aren’t at the point of makin’ politics a little too complicated…let’s pressure the real Democrats aforementioned. 40 votes ta filibuster should NOT be difficult for the progressives in the Senate ta come up with and let’s have Dodd call Obama and Mrs. Clinton out on this. Our phone calls will be jest like pissin’ in the wind…all that’ll accomplish is gettin’ our own socks wet!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND MAKE THE BASTARDS WORK FOR US FOR A CHANGE!!
Hi, Christy. Thank you for alerting us and for urging us on. You can bet Southwick’s supporters are making their calls (and more). You are doing an invaluable service.
I called Cardin and Mikulski and, as per usual, found the phone answerers to be rather clueless as to the issue and uninterested in documenting the nature of the call and both Senators unwilling to state their position on the vote and/or cloture. Quite the leadership they are displaying, no?
twolf1 @ 26
This should actually make everything quite a bit easier if our current leadership, et al, had any guts at all. If it was my decision, I’d tell Bush he has one hell of a lot of nerve asking for this much more right after he’s vetoed Schip. And him getting it doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell unless he signs the Schip bill that he just vetoed. Isn’t that pretty much the way they did it in the good old days?
Am I the only one out here gettin’ tired of callin’ tryin’ ta pressure DLC Democrats and DINOs into voting for their party’s interest and the interest of their constituents?
I don’t think so.
I think you are Not Alone.

Today, committee chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) accused Blackwater CEO Erik Prince of hiding “tens of millions of dollars, if not more” in Social Security, Medicare and retirement taxes by classifying its security guards in Iraq as independent contractors.Thank you, Henry Waxman. He GOT it.
and there’s this on Blackwater
at the end of the article
Prince says this:
“We’ve certainly been, I think, a high-end private security provider — a lot of demand for that type of service has propelled our growth,” he said, “but at our core we are trainers and could survive very nicely just being trainers again. And with a whole lot less heartache.”

So I’m asking for a favor today: call your Senators and tell them to vote no on Southwick. And then send them an e-mail. And a FAX. And call their local office.
I know you mean well. I simply can’t bring myself to do these things any more. Don’t you think the eventual rebuilding of our lives will be even harder for all the faith we’ve wasted on these people?

This is standard operating procedure….
Freelancers or contracted labor are treated as vendors and only sent 1099 forms when this is how they staff their business. By doing this, they do not have to pay any of the required matching funds for this class of employees.
This is standard for many in the high tech and the TeeVee industry, these employees loose out on matching Social Security & Medicare taxes. When these employees are reimbursed wages and expenses are combined into a single check which is an accounting nightmare.

Oh yes somethin’ stinks! Why did the Dems allow this twerp to be voted out of committee? Why is ol’ Harry scheduling the floor vote so fast? Having had the word “NO” said so often to them, you’d think the dems would have learned it by now. Just what do you suppose they think they’re going to get in return? It’s Charlie Brown, Lucy, an’ the football all over again… an’ you know who’s going to belying on the ground all surprised and betrayed.

Bless yer heart Demi, but the point is: shouldn’t we be expectin’ some real work outta the progressives in the Senate that are playin us like a drum and takin’ our money?
Regardless of One Hung Harry and DiFi, the real Democrats in the Senate should not have difficulty gettin 40 votes to oppose and they should make it a vote of no confidence in Hunglow Harry. Issues like this one should be able ta be used like the telecoms and FISA, get instant national press and undress the DLCers and the Clintonites in public every time one a these political neutron bombs is dropped by the fascists.
Where are the progressives in the Senate and why aren’t they raisin’ holy hell?

So ask him why, since he’s known this for such a long time, obviously, since it’s been on the news for a long time, he’s asking for the money as if it were an afterthought? Why didn’t he include it with the other money he requested? Then tell him the offer still stands. His money for war in exchange for health care for our children. Fair is fair. After all, he and the rest of the Rethugs wouldn’t want to abandon our children here in the USA, would they?

It says three jurors objected to the count…which is strange because why would they have indicated to the foreman that deliberations had ceased and they were unanimous in their verdict.Seems that one or more of the dissenters got “cold feet” over the weekend. SOMEONE GOT TO THEM?
Then the judge sent them back to Chambers and it was 11-1 that they could eventually reach a decision. There seems to have been one major holdout.
The Prosecutors say that they will waste the taxpayers money trying to win this case against another jury…one that they can talk to privately, apparently.

But John honey, if you take your eye off them they will slip us into a facist state all the more quickly and quietly. You aren’t calling and writing with the expectation that you can make them do the right thing- you’re doing it to let them know that the citizens of this country are watching. And just knowing you’re watching does make them less brazen, and keeps the damage down until we can replace them. YOU make the difference between future progressives having to clean up 470* piles of shit, and a mountain of shit so deep and high that there won’t be a constitution left to wipe with.

In other words, no Democrat is willing to use any of their precious ‘political capital’ to place a hold on this nomination, in opposition to Pat Leahy and Harry Reid’s wish to just keep the bullies happy, as the nation declines and falls.
Harry Reid believes we should all just “trust” in the benevolence of the corporate CEO culture, the way he does, never mind that inconvenient historical document that formed this nation. Planning only as far ahead as the next quarter’s revenue projections, or until the next election, the long-term interests of the company or nation be damned, is the unsustainable ethos that Harry Reid practices, with his own self-interest uppermost in mind.
As Senator Dodd has recently and vitally demonstrated regarding the corporate/government collusion on FISA lawbreaking, continuing to blindly follow this particular little man and his mendacious “leadership” of the caucus and thus the United States Senate is a prescription for ongoing disaster. Every Senator – because uniquely empowered to oppose – who refuses to oppose this corrupt and dangerous man is therefore as responsible as Harry Reid is for his ‘keep the bullies happy, never mind the cost to the nation’ willful refusal to try to stop the ongoing destruction of our nation and of its people’s present and future prospects.

because the Democrats are a Corporate Authoritarian, elite faction with a slightly different marketing strategy than the (R)’s, that’s why.
And they don’t have to change to win elections, because most folks who care deeply about the terrible injustices being perpetrated in Washington are in the thrall of the Axiom of Automatic Support for the Least Worst.
At a time when Democrats are making a lot of political gains in Mississippi, I don’t see how Southwick would be good for the state. It does not seem that the Dem leadership is aware that the state is changing and that may be one of Trent Lott’s fear.
