(Please welcome host Sidney Blumenthal and author Valerie Plame Wilson in the comments today, here to discuss her new book Fair Game: My Life as a Spy, My Betrayal by the White House — JH)
None of Valerie Plame’s elaborate training to become an elite covert operative for the CIA prepared her for the Byzantine, vicious and dispiriting smear campaigns directed against her and her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, in Bush’s Washington. When he felt compelled to tell the truth about President Bush’s false rationale for the invasion of Iraq—the infamous 16 words in his 2003 State of the Union address claiming Saddam Hussein was securing yellow uranium for nuclear weapons—Vice President Dick Cheney ordered the defamation of Wilson’s reputation. When the White House apparatus was instantly set in motion, with Cheney’s chief of staff I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby serving as the action officer on the op, and Karl Rove and Ari Fleischer relentlessly pressing the “scoop” on reporters, Plame still toiled away unknowing at her job at the CIA seeking information about the existence of weapons of mass destruction, not only in Iraq but also Iran and other dangerous places. In the blink of an eye, as quickly as Rove says to Chris Matthews, “Wilson’s wife is fair game,” Plame’s carefully constructed secret identity, her worldwide network of informants and the vital flow of intelligence on WMDs were blown apart.
Valerie Plame Wilson’s just published book, “Fair Game: My Life as a Spy, My Betrayal by the White House,” is her personal account of helplessly observing her career being shattered as in an out-of-body experience. “Fair Game” is rife with long redacted passages that the CIA censors insisted upon, though the information they blacked out was mostly on the public record. (The publisher, Simon & Schuster recruited investigative reporter Laura Rozen to fill in these blanks in an indispensable afterword.) The omissions only heighten the intrigue.
In the beginning Plame appears as Jane Bond. She describes her schooling in the arts of spycraft at the CIA’s “Farm,” where she discovers among other things that she is a crack shot, unafraid of diving out of planes and crawling through enemy fire. The details of her training discredit the long propagated falsehood by a host of conservative spinners, from the columnist Robert Novak to the attorney Victoria Toensing, that Plame was never a covert operative. Plame’s account of her clandestine work based at the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, which also required trips abroad, further demolishes the lie.
After years in the field, Plame is assigned to a new group called the Counterproliferation Division within the Department of Operations, dubbed as the “island of misfit toys” within the agency. The search for WMDs becomes a concentrated goal. In the run up to the war in Iraq, Plame is one of the key officers tasked to locate them. One of the most knowledgeable operatives, she continues to believe that it is highly likely that Saddam indeed has WMDs and is hiding them. Moreover, CIA director George Tenet sends around a memo, which also is intended for the Congress then voting on the Authorization for the Use of Military Force, claiming that there are proven links between Saddam and al Qaeda—false information that Plame (and the Congress) has no way of knowing is wrong. Plame works night and day to attempt to make the case, but fails to unearth evidence.
On February 5, 2003, Secretary of State Colin Powell presents the “facts” before the United Nations Security Council. Tenet sits behind Powell to underscore the reliability of his speech. “When the program ended and we all drifted back to our desks,” writes Plame, “I was deeply upset, my head spinning. I was experiencing what I can only call cognitive dissonance… I had been tracking Iraqi WMD efforts carefully for some time [redacted] and the facts I knew simply did not match up with what Powell had just presented.” Later, of course, Powell’s presentation was revealed as utter disinformation. At the time, Plame wondered, “Perhaps someone had managed to recruit a source deep inside Saddam’s innermost circle who was providing alarming evidence of his plans.” She has no knowledge that what Powell says is true. “The idea that my government, which I had served loyally for years, might be exaggerating a case for war was impossible to comprehend. Nothing made sense.”
After ‘Mission Accomplished,” Wilson discloses in a New York Times op-ed, “What I Didn’t Find In Africa,” that the administration’s justification for war was rooted in falsehood. Having been sent to Niger to uncover Saddam’s nefarious uranium buying scheme, he reported to the CIA that he could find no such evidence. The supposed documents used to prove it turned out to be forged. Who forged them remains a mystery. Immediately upon publication of Wilson’s op-ed, Cheney swings his underlings into action. Plame becomes collateral damage.
The reason for destroying the cover of a CIA operative was purely political. Cheney, et al showed absolutely no concern for protecting national security. Rather, they were intent on defending the administration and their policies from Wilson’s truthful revelation. Wilson had to be besmirched, and so they outed Plame. Systematically, they told reporters that she was behind sending her husband on the mission, a “junket,” as Cheney calls it, in order to distract and discredit. With her identity exposed, Plame’s utility was at an end. There can be no doubt that this breach seriously compromised national security.
One abiding mystery unaddressed in Plame’s book remains the role of former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, who corroborated Novak’s story (Rove being his main source) and leaking Plame’s name to Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward for potential use in a book to be published later (not for a current newspaper article). The close friend and number two to Powell, Armitage was not one of the neoconservatives or part of Cheney’s bureaucratic machinery. Why Armitage? Armitage himself has yet to explain. Nor do we know the full contents of his grand jury testimony, though it may be unlikely that his exact motives were subject to interrogation by the special prosecutor. Sources in the intelligence community tell me that Armitage wished to be appointed CIA director in Bush’s second term. Armitage also had a long relationship with Rove. Moreover, Armitage had never before deigned to speak with or even return a phone call from Novak. Yet he called Novak himself to confirm Plame’s identity. It seems inconceivable that Armitage did this completely at his own initiative. Pointing to Armitage as a leaker settles nothing. Libby, Rove and Fleischer, meanwhile, were all leaking furiously. And Armitage has yet to explain.
After her outing, Plame enters a bewildering world. The spymaster becomes the prey. Her government degrades the valued agent. The lies come so fast they are impossible to rebut. Detailed explanations exploding the falsehoods are ignored by a complicit press.
The Republican controlled Senate Select Committee on Intelligence summons Plame and her CIA colleagues, only to issue a false report, given credence by the editorial page of the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal. The testimony of her fellow operative at the CIA who actually recommended Wilson for his Niger mission is deliberately omitted. Distressed, he tells Plame, “They twisted my testimony… I recommended Joe for the trip, don’t you remember. I told the committee this, but they didn’t include it in the report.” This officer writes a memo asking for permission from the CIA “that he be allowed to testify again to the SSCI to correct the record, but was told unequivocally that that was not possible.”
Her career is ruined; his business has dried up. The lies rain down. The Washington Post editorial page, a stalwart ally of Libby throughout his trial, publishes an editorial on September 1, 2006, blaming Wilson for the outing of his wife, and repeating lock, stock and barrel the falsehood of the Republican propaganda from the SSCI. “I suddenly understood what it must have felt like to live in the Soviet Union and have only the state propaganda entity, Pravda, as the source of news about the world.”
Even before the Libby guilty verdict, the CIA begins censoring her manuscript. She is not permitted to write the birth dates of her children. “It was the bureaucratic equivalent of Groundhog Day…”
Wilson and Plame do not attend the trial, of course, but follow it on the Internet through the assiduous courtroom reporting of the team for Firedoglake.com. The documentation introduced by the prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, demolishes Libby’s defense—and the smear campaign—though those publications that perpetrated it make no amends, including the Post editorial page. Instead, on the weekend before the closing arguments, the Post “Outlook” section publishes Victoria Toensing’s mendacious article accusing Wilson of “misleading the public about how he was sent to Niger,” insisting that Fitzgerlad has no reason for an investigation and that Plame was “not covert.” The Post makes no effort to publish another piece in “Outlook” containing the facts.
With the verdict finding Libby guilty of obstruction of justice and perjury, the case is closed. But the truth remains to be known. Libby has successfully covered up for Cheney. According to Fitzgerald, a “cloud” remains over the vice president. Then Bush pardons Libby, completing the obstruction. Cheney escapes.
“Fair Game” is one of the essential documents of the Bush era, a harrowing personal account of betrayal. The betrayals of the Bush administration have become so numerous that they seem almost casual by now. Yet for Valerie Plame Wilson the personal was more than political. Betraying her was not just another lie, another smear, another Swift-boating. It was a breach of national security.

Welcome, Mrs. Wilson. Thank you for being here today. I want you to know that your determination, courage and persistence strengthen my own spine. I have been following your story ever since Jane, Christy and Marcy have been writing about it. Your story and the Downing Street memos were the two events that woke me from my waking slumber and made me realize how urgent it was to pay attention to what was going on in our government. I never let disparaging references to you pass unchallenged anymore, and I never will. Thank you again for your service to our nation.
Thank you Valerie!
Welcome Mrs Wilson!
Hello, Valerie! Welcome to the lake!
Welcome Sidney, welcome Valerie. Good to have you here today. I very much look forward to reading the book.
Greetings, Ms Wilson, and thank you for the opportunity to speak with you.
I, like many here, have followed your case closely from the moment you became a public figure. I think that what has been done to you and to America’s real interests in this affair is dastardly without doubt, and may well be treasonous.
I noted, in the days just before Mr. Novak’s infamous column, that Ambassador Wilson’s call out of the “16 words” in the NY Times resulted in the first ever admission on the part of the Bush administration that the president may have “misspoken” or “made a mistake” about something. That marked the event with special significance for me – and for others, I reckon.
I also noted your comment in the interview with Ms. Couric to the effect that, given your expertise and knowledge, you were (rightly) taken aback by Secretary Powell’s UN testimony.
With those issues in mind, I’d like to hear from you on the question, “What did they know, and when did they know it?”
By “they” I mean Mr. Cheney and his inner circle of warhawks in the administration. By “know” I mean your identity as a lead agent in sussing out WMD intelligence relating to nation states that begin with the letter “I”. So my question:
Can you say whether you met Dick Cheney face-to-face in connection your job with the CIA before the March 2003 launch of the Iraq War? How about Scooter Libby? Or John Hannah? Or David Wurmser? Or Fred Fleitz? Or John Bolton? Or Steven Hadley?
I’m weary of waiting for the “Phase II” report, you see, and I hope you can shed some careful public light on how certain players “used” intelligence before and after the launch of the deadly misadventure we call the War in Iraq.
Valerie, sincere welcome and thanks for your years of service in my name.
As I’m sure you know, you are at home among friends here and we are very grateful for your willingness to join us as one of your first stops as you promote your book. My preordered audio book is expected at any moment and I look forward to it eagerly.
I am interested to know what strategies and skills you feel you developed as you have waited for the Libby trial, your civil suit (condolences) and now the release of your book. It seems it would take one set of strengths to perform as a covert CIA agent for 20 years and perhaps a different set to deal with such soul-numbing frustration as well as the sudden shift to such a radically different life. Did your experience with postpartum depression inform you , or was it more political than personal in terms of the surrounding circumstances?
In terms of what we expect will be some tough responses by the Right, I would like to offer this:
“I know what I have given you. I do not know what you have received.” Antonio Porchia
All blessings to you and your family, and thanks again.

Welcome Valerie! You are my hero.
Good morning Mr. and Mrs. Wilson
Amazing book and an amazing lady.
(((((((Valerie!)))))))
Congrats on your new Book!
According to all the reviews I’ve read, about 10% of your book has been “redacted” by the CIA. I’m confident that when you wrote the book that you felt that information could be published without compromising national security. Do you think any of the redactions that were made had legitimate national security rationales behind them? And on a related note, can you provide any insight into how much other information is being (or remains) classified whose release would not threaten national security?
(PS…like everyone else, I think you are an American hero of the first order!)
Valerie Plame Wilson, I am unable to state adequately what an honor it is to have you at FDL. Our nation owes you a great debt and we are all deeply, deeply appreciative of your selfless service to our country. I am sorry that we as Americans have not had more success in holding accountable those who have so seriously wronged you and our nation. Please rest assured that FDL and many other communities will press on. For today the best I could do was purchase your book via the FDL link.
Thank you so much for both your service and your sacrifice. You and your husband are true American Super Heroes.
My hero!
Valerie, would it be accurate to say that your career was not the only one destroyed when your cover was blown, i.e. co-workers whose life’s work went up in smoke?
What an honor to have you. thanks
Thank you Valerie for your very serious service to our country. Thank both you and your husband for speaking truth to power. You are both American heroes.
Will the American public ever have access to any of the reports about the damage done to your organization, your people, or to our nation by your outing? I have read that it will take 10 years for the CIA to recover from your outing.
Welcome Valerie — and thank you to Sidney for the introduction today. Like Jane, I’m looking forward to reading the book as well.
Hi it’s Valerie Plame Wilson and I’m thrilled to be on FDL. Hi Sidney!
Valerie Plame Wilson:
I have a question for you that has long haunted me regarding the treachery that exposed your CIA affiliation. While it looked at first blush that you were outed purely as political payback against your husband there have been many lingering questions/suspicions that your outing was also at least in part to deliberately destroy your unit so as to prevent the CIA from contradicting the nuclear threat assessments regarding Iran’s supposed nuclear program just as the Administration ginned up “intelligence” regarding Iraq’s non-existent nuclear programs was in 2002-03 which was not believed by those with the greatest expertise within the intelligence community on nuclear issues. Do you have any reason to think that you and your network/section may have been the primary target all along by this Administration either to destroy your network or at the minimum to send a message to the intelligence community that to contradict anything the Bush Administration says will trigger harsh repercussions even to the extent of blowing deep covers of operatives as you and your cover business covers was blown?
Thank you for considering this question, and even more so for your work on nuclear anti-proliferation. In your job you were not just protecting American and Americans from this threat but all of us on the planet and your exposure was a treachery against the entire free/western world in my opinion. What was done to you was a travesty of the highest order and I can only pray that none within your network did not suffer the ultimate penalty as a result of the treachery against you. I recognized/understood that damage the day you were blown because I was raised by a relative that worked in Intelligence from the mid 1930s to the mid 60s and had as a result of that learned much about that world from that relative growing up. Indeed it fascinated me greatly and because of that I understood the full implications and therefore the full ramifications of exposing a NOC not just to the NOC but anyone that ever interacted with the NOC both professionally and personally.
You are someone that deserves nothing but the highest respect and admiration, not the travesties that you have received since you were betrayed by your own government. For what it is worth you have my and my family’s highest regard and respect for the work you did and for your unwillingness to be cowed by those that see nothing wrong in trashing real heroes like yourself when it suits partisan political considerations. I look forward to reading your book as soon as my local library has it (sorry, can’t afford to buy hardcovers these days no matter how much I want them…sigh) as I am second on the hold request list for it.
Valerie,
I’d like to thank you, for your work on behalf of our country for standing up to the Administration, but most especially for inspiring my 15-year-old daughter. Strong female role models are sometimes hard to find in the real world (except here at the Lake, of course) and because of you, she is now considering a career in government service after college.
This question is from her: Many people have described you, quite rightly, as very beautiful. Since this isn’t the normal picture one has of a spy – most people think of characters from Tom Clancy novels – were there times in your career when you didn’t feel you were being taken as seriously as your male collegues or felt your missions were more difficult to accomplish because of your appearance?
Welcome, Valerie, and thank you for your service to our country.
Last nite, you told Katie Couric “It turns out the President is not a man of his word.” My question is this: Did you think, when you heard Bush say he’d fire anyone connected with leaking your name, that he was a man of his word? When did you realize Bush was not a man of his word?
Again, welcome and thank you.
Along with everyone here at the lake, I have to give you my thanks, for your selfless service and your unbending patriotism.
I have to also give you and your husband my personal thanks for arousing the activist in me, if not for your husband’s fearless piece in the New York times I would not have become nearly as studious with regards to our government and then state of affairs we are faced with in these time where we have an administration that actually believes the armed forces of the Unites States of America is nothing but a tool they can use to line their pockets.
And that was the real purpose of war in Iraq, their goal was to pillage the national assets of the middle east, not pillage for our country’s sake (which would have been bad enough), but to pillage for their own bank accounts
then to squander the assets Americans have invested over generations so they themselves could take a small percentage of those assets for themselves and their cohorts.
And then to take the assets of our children, saddling each and every American with a debt in the tens of thousands…PER PERSON, INCLUDING CHILDREN NOT YET BORN!
their only purpose is to steal and it is the greatest theft in the history of planet earth
from Raw Story article by Larisa Alexandrovna:
“The revelation that Iran was the focal point of Plame’s work raises new questions as to possible other motivating factors in the White House’s decision to reveal the identity of a CIA officer working on tracking a WMD supply network to Iran, particularly when the very topic of Iran’s possible WMD capability is of such concern to the Administration.”
Valerie,
It’s a pleasure.
Would you please elaborate on these “new questions” for us?
Thanx,
Dan
Valery, I have few questions I hope you are at liberty to answer about Brewster Jennings and Associates, the fact that this company is mostely ignored by the media gives me reason to believe there is much more there then even meets the eye;
1)Are you able to give us a rough idea how many assets used this brass plate corporation as their cover?
Are you able to give us rough figures telling us how great the monetary investment in that corporation?
I know the CIA was livid when they discovered your cover exposed, were they more upset over the assets lost due to Brewster& Jennings?
I had a conversation with your husband when he took questions here at the lake and I brought up a point he said he had not considered till I broached the subject;
We know as a fact the vice president had intentions of not only attacking Iraq before he ever took his oath of office, but he also intended on attacking Iran
We also know that you one of your commissions was the on going surveillance monitoring nuclear acquisition of Iran.
I am led to believe your exposure was as much intended to end your program as it was an attack on your husband…
your program wasn’t delivering the information the vice president wanted to become public and it is all too convenient the very program that would help us from initiating yet another unprovoked attack on a country that poses no threat is the program that was also exposed when they attacked your husband.
And what kind of cowards are these in office…they seem to enjoy attacking the wives of their adversaries, the way they attacked McCain’s wife and family, the way they attacked Kerrie’s wife and now how they actually put your life at peril, every contact you’ve made over the time of your career at peril, even those friends associates and family NOT involved in covert operations, their lives put at peril…in their lame attempt to discredit the opinion piece your husband wrote…these are cowards of the worst order, willing to spend national security and lives to quiet the truth.
Dear Mrs. Plame: I applaud you and your husband’s bravery and honesty in going up against the massive dishonesty of BushCo. How weird was the “partisan” question that Katie Couric asked?
Welcome to FDL, Valerie Plame Wilson! Thanks you for your service to our/your country! And congratulations on your book.
Unfortuantely, I am not able to comment on my work with Iran… but I think it is pretty clear that the exposure of my covert identity was political payback for Joe’s criticism of the administation.
Welcome to the lake Valerie. I pre-ordered thru Amazon and they are giving me a 11-3 thru 11-8 due to arrive date. Looking forward to reading it.
Ms Wilson, thank you for your service to our country. Both my parents were CIA veterans. What was done to you by our government was treason, IMO.
Question for you: The CIA recalled you from Europe in the late 90s because they thought you might be on A. Ames’ “list.” Since you were later sent back into overseas duty, can we assume that you were not on Mr. Ames’ list?
Welcome Mrs Wilson and thank you for your service to the country. I plan on buying your new book this weekend. I wanted to tell you that your interview with Katy Couric was quite good – you appeared very confident and showed that you would not take any bunk from an interviewer.
Do you think you were purposely taken out so that the radical right wing warmongers could beat the “go to war with Iran” drums unencumbered? You know get the information you were collecting about Iran out of play?
What do you think that Judy Miller had to do with your outing? I have read that your identity “allegedly” went from her to the White House. Do you know if there is any truth to this?
I have a question. Has the harrassment continued?
Hi, Sidney. Welcome to FDL, Valerie! I bought your book this morning, and it seems to be a quick read, since so much of it was redacted by the CIA. Frustrating, but perhaps the Afterword will make up for that. It’s much longer than I expected, which is great. How did you chose Laura Rozen to write it? I love her blog, http://www.warandpiece.com/
I almost want to start reading that first, so I can guess what the redacted parts are while reading.
Heartfelt thanks to you and your husband for your service to this country. And, sincere empathy and disgust for the slime baths you both have had to endure.
I’m sure that you have met and worked with many fine, principled people during your career. I’m sure, too, that you are not the only good people to wind up on the wrong end of ugly political machinations.
Why aren’t more people fighting back and speaking out? Is it that principle get smothered by reality so easily?
Hi Valerie, and welcome to FDL!!!
I have a slightly OT question — what is the current status of the Warner Brothers movie? Is it still in development? Is it close to production?
The reason I ask is that my friend Jessica could easily pass for your sister, and she looks more like you than any of the name actors that have been mentioned for the role. I’ve encouraged her to put together a screen test, to see what happens. She would be great in the role, but we understand that it would be a long shot at best. But even if it led to work as a stand in, or character development assistant, or whatever, it would be a great opportunity for her.
What is the current stage of development for the film project?
As I read the book yesterday, I came to the part when the trial of Scooter Libby was playing out, You said that Joe was following the coverage hear until 5;00pm or so and that later, you would follow it some also.
I always knew in my heart that you were lurking here and am tickled you mentioned it in your book.
Valerie, welcome and thank you for your years of service to our country.
I hope you are receiving a very warm welcome in Santa Fe!
I cannot stay this morning. Nor should I. This is Valerie’s coming out party with all of you whose support has been so important in this fight. But I did want to make three points.
1. Isn’t Valerie great. She handled 60 Minutes last night with great aplomb. She is the best thing that ever happened to me and I am just so proud of her.
2. This story is not, and has never been, about Valerie or me. It has always been about the administration and the Republican party’s willingness to lie, cover up, and condone the betrayal of our National Security. The administration and its lackeys have subverted our very democracy by their actions. This fight is about restoring constitutional rule to our great country. Our case is the mechanism through which we take the fight to the opposition. While we would much prefer to live our lives privately like other Americans, away from the harsh glare of the right wing smear machine, we realize that is not an option. When our kids ask us, twenty years from now, “Where were you when it counted,” our answer will be “On the front lines.”
3. Two people in Washington helped us understand the broader implications of the fight we have found ourselves in: Sid Blumenthal, and Hillary Clinton. They had both been through the character assassination gauntlet, and were able to get us to see that the fight wasn’t personal, however painful it might be, but was all about how we conduct public debate and discourse in our democracy. I cannot tell you how many times they told us to pull up our socks and quit feeling sorry for ourselves because the future of the country is what really matters. I am eternally grateful to both for their wisdom and their profound understanding of the pernicious threat posed by the forces of the far right. If you haven’t read Sid’s books: The Clinton Wars and the Rise of the Counter Establishment you really should. It is an honor for me that my dear friend is part of Valerie’s day here with you. This has been a long battle, far longer for the Blumenthals and for the Clintons than for us, but bruising to all who have been subjected to the viciousness and the lies of the right.
Very few have emerged from the fire tempered rather than broken by the experience. Thanks to Sid and Hillary, I think we have, and I think that is reflected in what you have already seen of Valerie’s interviews. Have fun, and for those who may want to try to woo my wife away from me, I will be checking back later and will take names! Sweetheart, I love you.
They were never able to prove or disprove who
exactly was on Ames’ list. All we do know is that the CIA referred this case to the Justice Department in September 2003 for investigation of a possible criminal act.
Welcome Sidney and Valerie. Thank you for being here.
Thank you Mrs Wilson!
Ms. Wilson and Mr. Blumenthal, welcome.
I shudder to think how this all might have turned out had there been no such thing as the internets and Plame-ologists like Jane, Christy and Marcy when all this was fresh and new. Rather-gate blew over in a New York minute compared to this saga and so I don’t think the perps figured on blogs having such influence, either.
Can you play “What If”?
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 19
For every message of gratitude to you and Ambassador Wilson, there are a million more
who share the same sentiment but are unable to be here to express it.
Dear Mrs. Wilson,
The desire of people in the Executive Branch to attack Iran has gone from being a ‘tinfoil hat’ supposition to a widely accepted rumor. (Anyone: has it been confirmed?)
The triggering event is at present said to be Iran’s getting a nuclear weapon and even the ability to make one.
You allegedly were involved not only in monitoring the proliferation of WMDs abroad but specifically in monitoring and even impeding Iran’s nuclear program, whether or not that was/is aimed at production of weapons. I understand that you cannot confirm your involvement in this, but for the sake of argument, can we say that some of the same people in the Executive Branch who wish to attack Iran believed that you were involved in this way?
So, if you and your network had been permitted to function up to the time that the EB people wanted to attack Iran, the CIA would have had information that might have said Iran was not capable of making a nuclear weapon. Then, the EB would not have had their casus belli.
My suspicion is that you and your network were the principal target for the EB all along.
Does this seem possible to you?
Dear Ms. Wilson:
I have the utmost respect and admiration for you. You were treated most harshly by this administration, and keep on telling your story.
Congrats on your new book! There are many of us who support you and we are fighting to stop the many injustices of this administration.
Welcome Valerie,
Thank you for your service.
Have you run into the despicable Mr. Novak since his traitorous article?? Has he ever apologized in any form??
Thank you so much for your courage and service to our country, Mrs. Wilson… I had the pleasure of meeting your amazing husband at the first YearlyKos and admire both of you tremendously…
Smedley Butler would be proud of you and your husband!
Took the thread a few mins. to load or I’d be up on the thread content, Valerie.
The NYT article has interesting aside to how your got the name wrongly attributed via Judith Miller, itself telling in a lot of cover roles that could have been applied to others.
For starters, to discuss your standing in the CIA, I think the most relevant information on training could be provided regarding the current administration stance on torture, and how it is shunned by true experts for creating false leads and reinforcing previous bias about the opponent’s world view.
You agree that torture makes it harder to break true information for people who see themselves as part of a cause?
Could the torture narrative been made with the intent of crafting and shaping false narratives much like the WMD stories Miller and others piped out?
Mrs. Wilson,
I have a sense that the damage done to you and the country when you were outed was part of a much bigger effort to undermine elements of the CIA devoted to responsible national security actions and bolstering elements with authoritarian and jingoist tendencies.
Do you agree? Do you have a sense of how serious the damage is to the moral fabric of the CIA?
Valerie
Just a quick welcome before I rush off to a meeting. But I did have one question for you:
Accounts of your Today show appearance say that you suggested the Administration is capable of twisting intelligence again to justify war against Iran.
Can you expand on this (without addressing what you’ve done with Iran)? Now that you’re no longer privy to the intelligence, how would you identify twisted intell on Iran? What suggestions do you have for those of us trying to sift through what may be more lies?
to valerie plame wilson:
you are the quintessential american
patriot — and hero.
i offer my sincere thanks for your
bravery — and my sincere apologies
for how our government — the one “we,
the people“, should hold accountable,
has met your patriotism and heroism
with treachery and deceit.
like boo radley — i am off to buy
your book, now. . .
p e a c e
Joe Wilson @ 39
Sir, we love both of you tremendously and sincerely hope that you keep at it. Justice might have to wait until after Jan. ‘09 but we are there with you every step of the way !
Welcome Ms. Wilson for your service and courage. Thank you Sidney Blumenthal for giving us the opportunity to show how support of the Wilsons, directly to them. Thank you Joe for your courage and speaking out.
There is so much collected evidence of treason against this administration and still they are in power. Between “There was significant damage” and “My Betrayal by the White House”, not to mention as an aside the resignation of Ali Larijani this weekend, what more does it take for congress to take impeachment action? The accumulated evidence of treason against the Bush Administration should make congress feel the urgency as much as many of us feel it. Why do you think they are so passive and collusive?
I saw an earlier comment about FDL and how (frankly) obsessively Joe and I read the live blogs during the trial. What a huge breakthrough for media and how we can get our information! We hosted several FDLers including Jane and Christie and Marcy to our home for dinner during the trial and it was clear to me and Joe that they knew waaay more about the details of the case than we ever will. I am grateful to all of them for their passionate and dedicated efforts to get to the truth.
Hi Valerie,
What can you say about Tenet briefing Bush on 9/18/02 about Naji Sabri’s claim that Saddam had no WMDs?
Thank you for your service to our country. I’m sorry for what happened to you.
Mrs Wilson,
Thank you for your service and sacrifices.
I have to admit that it is sometimes difficult to look at the CIA as one of the “good guys” given the actions they were involved with in the ’60s and ’70s.
Did the findings of the Church Commission and the Iran/Contra hearings move the CIA away from the previously reported lawlessness of the 60s and 70s? Did the revelations inform the actions of you and your fellow agents in doing the correct and reputable actions?
Thank you for being here today and again for your sacrifices.
Valerie,
Would it be fair to say that your career was not the only one destroyed by your outing? That is, other people who you worked with had their careers indirectly destroyed?
I think I am going to faint.
Good morning Ms. Wilson. Thank you so much for coming.
One question.
Do you think that your outing was entirely to get back at your husband for daring to speak the truth? Or do you think that it was partially to STOP the CIA from finding out about WMD in Iran or Iraq?
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 56
This is a dedicated group, Valerie, as much as it is possible, we’re here for you.
PS Tell your friends.
I thought that the question on the TODAY show about the capability of this administration to distor intelligence regarding Iran was a good one. As Yoggi Berra said, “it’s deja vu all over again.” This time, however, I hope the American people are aware and ask questions and do not allow an inconsidered rush to war as with Iraq…
Thank you Sidney Blumenthal for all of your important reporting.
In the article Sidney wrote called “The Generals Revenge” it sure sounds like Colin Powell was duped. http://www.guardian.co.uk/comm…..79,00.html
In Sidney and Valerie and (Joe Wilson) if he is
here opinions, was Colin Powell duped?
Joe Wilson, you are a class act. I love what you wrote!
I join all the others in welcoming Valerie and hope that this book will help clarify things for the country. I’m looking forward to reading it soon.
one thing that bothers me is how the republian party has been able to frame the libby pardon in their terms instead of the correct terms
libby was convicted of covering up the crimes of traitors, whenever someone says “he obstructed justice” this does not give the crime the correct weight
“obstructing justice” was how he is convicted but covering the tracks of people who deliberately exposed assets vital to our national security is what happened
this is the way I would love to see democrats discuss the issue, they need to say “Irving Libby deliberately gave cover to traitors who committed treason and he continues giving cover to those traitors”
and then I would like to see the democrats go to the heart of the republican brand with;
“anyone that thinks the man who covered the tracks of these criminals enables the crime and can’t possibly call themselves patriots”
Valerie
Would you consider running for office or forming a PAC or anything political in your and Joe’s future?
Welcome and thanks to Ms. Valerie Plame Wilson for her continued, honorable service to our country. Trust us, it has not been in vain. I intend to buy the book today.
One thing I look forward to is Ms. Wilson’s appearance on The Daily Show and/or The Colbert Report with her book. Showing the redacted passages on their shows would make perfect, immortal visuals.
Ambassador Wilson @ 39
Nice smackdown of Ms Couric last night when she tried to offer the R talking points about Rove et al.
Thank you for your years of service to our country, Mrs. Wilson.
I just purchased two copies of Fair Game, one for myself & one for my daughter. Best of luck w/your opening sales figures.
What a joy to have both of you remarkable Americans honoring all of us with your presence this morning!
I am keenly interested to learn if a book tour is planned for your long awaited book. We would love welcoming you to the Monterey Peninsula and have many excellent venues to choose from for your countless admirers/readers.
I think Joe is teasing jayt for a comment yesterday. *g*
Ms. Plame, you are my personal hero. I have just one question for you:
What can we do to help? To help this country, to help your case, to help democracy; all of which are under fire. What can we do to help?
Thank you for your service.
Did you think the 60 minute piece was fair?
Why New Mexico?
Thank you for speaking the truth! You are an American hero for doing so. It’s an honor to read you blogging here!
Joe Wilson @ 39
Hi, Joe!
I think there’s another key part of the story you inadvertently left out: the importance of citizen generated media to fight for justice when establishment outlets remain in the tank for the administration, and against consitutional oversight and justice.
That, to me, is also what your terrible journey has been about, and it highlights the work of the readers and writers across the Internet who made sure your story was told, ensured the administration could not fire Fitz in the US Attorney purges without causing a mess. . . etc. Without all of us, it would have been Whitewater coverage all over again, tilted to lies, as Senator Clinton knows about all too well, unfortunately.
Welcome, Valerie. I too look forward to reading the book.
To the best of my knowledge, the leaking of my name and secret affiliation was primariy to undermine and discredit Joe’s report about Niger and his criticism of the admistration’s rationale for going to war. There is no question that character assissination is a tactic used by this crowd to silence their enemies.
Valerie –
I want to thank you and your husband for coming forward to tell what you know. It seems to me that what has happened to you is an example of where our lies lead us – to wars and to betrayal.
I am so fed up with being lied to by my own government – especially when it comes to reasons given to invade another country. I want it to stop.
We all know that the lies didn’t start with the reasons to attack Iraq in 2003. For example we now know that we were lied into attacking Iraq in 1991 (from the lies told to congress about babies being pulled from incubators to the lies about non-exsistent Iraqi forces threatening Saudi Arabia)
Now, at least, the story of your betrayal through lies and selective “leaks” and the false justifications for another war are being told – thanks to you, your husband and some other brave people who are speaking out.
When our government lies and the rights of all people are not respected, we end up with prisoners being tortured in black sites, humanitarian disasters like the Iraq wars and occupation, and the safety and self determination of millions of people undermined…. and the damage done to others comes back to us in the form of blowback. Even if we don’t know why – our lives are put in danger rather than protected.
What can we do to change this? From your perspective as a former insider… when you step back and look at the big picture… can you see alternatives? Can we create a national security infrastructure that is responsible and responsive to us, the citizens?
Valerie, just wanted to say thank you for your service to our country. Wishing you, Joe and your family happiness.
Hi Valerie and Joe!
I see that everyone else has already asked the questions I wanted to ask, so I’m just going to say thank you to both of you, for everything, and especially for taking time to be here.
(And I’ve put your book on my Christmas list, let’s hope Santa is listening!)
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 63
Yes, I thought Matt Lauer’s questions on the Today Show were apt. A little bit unusual for him…*g* And I thought you handled yourself with verve.
I hope you have fun with your book tour! And what a kickoff it’s been. Congratulations again.
Dear Ms. Wilson, it is an honor to be here with you today. You are a hero, and what happened to you at the hands of the Bush administration should shake every American to their core.
I have a lot of questions, but mostly, perhaps it’s time to make a statement. I watched the press conference you and Ambassador Wilson had when you announced the filing of the civil suit. Every woman watching that day had to fall just a little in love with your husband, because he makes it clear that he adores you, everyone else should treat you with courtesy and respect, and he will do whatever he has to do to defend you and your family.
He’s the greatest, and so are you. Thank you so much for your service on behalf of all of us.
-S
Hi Valerie
My local bookstore had your book out last night (yea me) and I got started. At first ALL the redacted pages were confusing, but they had such an impact when I realized why you had left them in. They went beyond cautious.
I loved the part where you are in XXXX sitting at a sidwalk cafe trying to blend in while waiting for XXXX . It all paints a picture with out the names.
I wish you luck with this great book.
Colin Powell knew that Cheney, Libby and the neocons were attempting to dupe him. Powell threw out a 50 plus page memo that Libby thurst upon him for his speech, knowing that its information was false and/or unreliable. Under these circumstances, Powell failed to be properly circumspect about intelligence or self-protective. Instead, he had joined the bandwagon. I wrote a recent piece on Powell here: http://www.salon.com/opinion/b…..aq_powell/
It originally appeared they wanted do a bait and switch ex post facto, using a dual claim of continued presence as:
1)We broke Iraq, we’ve got to fix it…
coupled with…
2)Iran was the bad guy, not Iraq.
CHeney was not patient to do so, and used political expediency to gut the flip.
Speaking of flips, what do you think of Putin agreeing to discuss possible Syrian missile sales?
The Russian and CHinese look to be in better shape than are we in the MidEast.
Welcome, Valerie, and thank you and Joe for all you have done–and are doing–in public service to all of us. And excellent role modeling for the next generations, who will bear the weight of cleaning up this mess.
My questions duplicate others already asked, so just Welcome! Have fun on your book tour…and when you get back to Santa Fe, enjoy that beautiful place as much as this tourista has.
Joe: “This story is not, and has never been, about Valerie or me.”
But it is about you both as representatives for us and for the voice we don’t feel we have. You gave us a sense that someone was the grownup in the sandbox and that what we were doing was important. My heart breaks for both of you at the result, but I think you need to know and accept that you have been a source of inspiration and strength.
You can be humble about it if you like, but it’s the truth.
Valerie Plame Wilson, words won’t be able to express my deep gratitude to you for your service and your courage.
I absolutely think the 60 Minutes piece was fair… I thought they did a good job of explaining this sometimes complicated story… and speaking when I could not. Katie’s questions were good – she’s just doing her job.
As for why New Mexico: In another life, I traveled often to Los Alamos and usually stayed in Santa Fe. It is so rich culturally, intellectually, socially – all out of proportion to a town of it’s size. And, it has a wonderful climate… far, far from Washington. We have been warmly welcomed.
Bustednuckles @ 60
me too what an honor..Thanks to Valerie, Joe, Sidney, and the FDL team for giving us hope in folks who are willing to speak truth to power.
But Valerie how do we say it politely, you were willing to put your own life on the line for our country and American lives and then to have your cover your life completely betrayed by the Bush administration not only brings tears to my eyes but anger to my belly.
I can not say thank you enough to both you and Joe for your determination and sustained effort to get to the truth.
Ah, Mrs. Peel! Sorry!
Right! Is the exposure of your cover by the VP an impeachable offense?
What is amazing is the fact that after your cover was intentionally blown it crippled their awareness of Iran’s cabilities regarding WMD’s.
Do you find that ironic at this point?
Just out of curiosity, is being drop dead gorgeous a requirement for being a NOC or is it optional? :-)
I have a problem with this. There were about 100 million Arabs and anybody else who knew anything about the Middle East who knew the Saddam-al Qaeda connetion was bogus. As for WMD, I was willing to give the Administration the benefit of the doubt on it until I heard Powell’s UN presentation. It was about the weakest thing I ever heard.
I suppose if I have a question for Valerie Plame, it would be why didn’t the CIA pay closer attention to UNSCOM’s chronicling of the dismantlement of Saddam’s WMD programs? These showed not only how much had been destroyed but also the inability of Saddam to reconstitute his WMD programs.
Valerie: What do you think of Blackwater?
Just had to say hello. I have no questions, others here are better informed and can ask more intelligent questions.
Just wanted to let you know that it is people like you that give me hope for this country. Without people like Valerie and Joe out there I would have given up long ago. Good luck in all that you do.
I would like to point out that the valery wilson case and how they came after the two of you might be the single most important reason the democrats took majority in both houses.
sadly they have done nothing with that majority…I sure hope they find their wings before it’s too late to do anything at all
Don’t have time to tarry, must get back to work but I wanted to thank both Mrs Wilson and her stalwart husband for their strength and courage throughout this sorry ordeal. “Fair Game” is on my list for the next visit to the local indy bookstore. Mrs Wilson believes that Mr Bush is a man who does not stand behind his word. We believe that Mr Bush has neither the intelligence nor the intestinal fortitude to stand behind his word.
Bon chance in all your endeavors and…
Peace
Did you get to meet Tony and Lynn Day in Santa Fe before Tony passed? Tony was editorial page editor at LAT during their one left-leaning period, the Reagan Years
Behold the Empire of Lies eroding, like a neglected sandcastle.
Kudos to the Wilsons for their efforts towards the winds of truth.
Thanks for coming again, and thanks to FDL for providing such a revolutionary forum allowing citizens to speak to American heroes!
My question is this: According to ThinkProgress.org, you have direct experience dealing with Iran’s nuclear capabilities. In what ways can you utilize those experiences to help counteract the administration’s false claims about the supposed rise of a nuclear fascist Hitlerite Iranian empire?
Sidney Blumenthal @ 85
Thank you, Mr Blumenthal. You’ve just proved my argument with my husband last night regarding Colin Powell. I can’t wait to show him your article.
Many thanks, Ms. Plame, for your courage and good works.
My thinking in 2003, and now, is that the Bush administration wanted to silence all internal and external critics, and your outing was the equivalent of a public execution of a public dissenter.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 78
Welcome, Valerie!
Again, recognizing the limits of what you can and can’t address, this “character assassination” also no doubt served as a warning to others in the intelligences services. “Nice job you’ve got here, Ms/Mr. Intelligence Officer. It’d be a shame if anything happened to it. It’s a pity what happened to Valerie. By the way, how’s that report for the OVP coming? . . .”
Has this made your colleagues more fearful at offering up intelligence conclusions that the White House doesn’t want to hear, or has it emboldened them to push back even harder? Or perhaps some of both?
To the comment on Joe: I can say that Joe and I both feel in love at first sight. Which is a good thing, because it has seen us through some pretty dark moments. We were kidding the other day that we are ready to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary because we have really packed a lot into the last few years… it FEELS like 35 years.
For all that has happened to us personally, however, Joe and I never lose sight of the fact that everyday, American families get the worst possible news about their loved ones fighting in Iraq and their pain, that that of the country was caused by this admnistration’s arrogance and folly.
Valerie,
Looks like a good strategy to have a supplement to the book based on publicly available timelines and records.
How much of that work, do you think, relied on Marcy’s Wheeler’s previously published writings?
Valerie, I can only express my deepest condolences for what our Executive branch did to you and your husband. The way that you weathered the attacks from the Republicans on the Senate Intelligence Committee as well as the minions of the White House in the Media deserves admiration.
I know it’s difficult to discuss details of various intelligence operations but I was wondering if you can speak in general about the efforts of the Counterintelligence Division.
I note that in the case of the North Korean nuclear test that there were initially some doubts that a nuclear device had been detonated. Apparently the trigger had failed to properly detonate the device, yet there was a seismic signature and atmospheric/groundwater evidence was collected suggesting that fissionable nuclear materials were present.
There has been reference to a Project Merlin in the media, where a defective nuclear trigger was to be passed to Iran which would have only have been detected as flawed during the actual field test of the device. Presumably that would have allowed the Agency to know precisely when Iran was actually technologically close to building a weapon, while at the same time setting them back from successfully completing it. That sounds very similar to what occurred with the North Korean device in effect allowing international pressure to build against the rogue state prior to their actually holding useable nuclear devices.
You presumably were not privy to intelligence about the Korean situation, but does that seem to have been similar to what the CIA is said IN THE MEDIA to have been up to with Operation Merlin?
Do you think that the published and uncensored reports in Risen and elsewhere in the media about the Operation being detected and a general collapse of the Iranian network of CIA sources is at all accurate? If it is true the Iranians would already know THAT and therefore any security risk would be non-existant.
Do you think that the Senate Select Committee confabulated the 1999 trip your husband made to Niger in which he discovered Iranian efforts to obtain “yellowcake” with his later 2002 trip…especially regarding your involvement?
Hi Valerie and Joe,
I look forward to reading your book, Valerie. I just want to thank you both for your service to our country, and for being the brave people that you are.
I’ve watched your saga unfold from the Novak column identifying you as an “agency operative” (which I took to mean a CIA agent) to today. Do you feel that Tenet and other CIA execs let you down? Other than Fitz and Henry Waxman, I feel that the government has failed you and really all of us.
I’ve read Risen’s book among others and I wonder if you think that there is not some kind of turf battle going on within the CIA which is really to the detriment of our security?
Thanks for your service.
Rita
Valerie, thank you for everything you and your husband have done for the country (all at your personal expense, no less). I have tremendous admiration and respect for both of you.
I was horrified to read Larry Johnson’s diary at Kos this morning about the lack of protection offered to your family after the FBI informed you that Al Qaida was planning to assasinate you.
Has the government helped to protect you and your children at all?
zennurse @ 88
‘Tis true. As many people have pointed out, you two have stepped and become a bar for walking the talk.
Sometimes I might feel too tired to make calls to congress or do a mass faxing or drive a long way to some BlueAmerica meeting, but then, I think of my kids and what I’m going to tell them when they ask “But, Mom, what did you do to try and stop Them?”
Yes, we think about our children.
Right on, you two! (oh, sorry, Sydney,) You three!
Kudos!
To the Wilsons.
To Mr. Blumenthal.
Without the courage and insight of people like you, some of us would be seeking refuge in another country!
Welcome Valerie and thank you for visiting with us. It’s a crime that we do not have your expertise still available to those analyzing wmd threats – particularly as the politicians seems so willing to use rumours and false information to lead us into wars.
Thank you for your work.
Mrs. Wilson,
I just wanted to express my admiration for both of you. If Cheney, Rove, et. al escape formal justice, I hope somehow they realize what they have done to our system and have to live with it for the rest of their miserable existences.
Reading Joe’s words about your first meeting at the Turkish embassy brought to mind a fairy tale come true.
Thank you Valerie Plame Wilson for your amazing courage and continuing to fight with and for all of us.
Can you tell us how your outing and subsequent mistreatment has affected your colleagues who still work at the CIA and how much support you’ve received from them?
Valerie – Assuming this Admin and its bad actors are purged and/or marginalized by a wholesale change or power for the Executive branch in next year’s elections, could you comment on your sense of whether or not substantial opinions/feelings or other revelations/actions will come to light within the intelligence community that are otherwise being smothered under the current Cheney/Bush power grip?
Ms. Wilson– I’m a college professor who provides a lot of career guidance for students. Do you have any thoughts on how (and whether) to encourage careers in government service, given the extensive politicization of govt functions during the current administration? Seems to me there may be great opportunities, in a couple of years (hopefully).
In a question about the Afterword by Laura Rozen, I never met her, nor spoke with her… there was a strong firewall between her work and mine for all the legal reasons you can imagine. Laura based her work on interviews and the plethora of publically available information on this case and my background. She may have cited Marcy’s excellent work on this case – but I have not had time yet to look at it too closely. I am pleased with her work, however.
Recently Democrats were pushing Federal Shield Law legislation.
Patrick Fitzgerald wrote about the dangers of passing a Federal Shield law for Journalist in the Oct 4, 2007 Washington Post.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..02000.html
Fitzgerald wrote “Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee will consider a “shield law” for journalists that would radically alter the way national security investigations are conducted. Unlike state shield laws, a federal shield law poses unique obstacles to the protection of national security. We must know whether the proposed law squarely addresses a real problem before taking such a significant step.”
Our nation has witnessed the false and deadly WMD reporting of Judy Miller before the invasion of Iraq. We witnessed Robert Novak’s more than willing participation with the out Valerie Plame traitor team. We witnessed Bob Woodward publicly undermine Fitz’s investigation of Scooter Libby while knowing that he was the first reporter to be told by the Bush administration officials of your identity.
I would like to witness Journalist like this held accountable under the law for their serious abuse of these privileges.
Do you think journalist should have more protection or less?
Hey Valerie, I know the usual explanation for your outing was to get back at your husband, but considering that you were working on WMD in Iraq, what are the chances the Bush admin just wanted you out of the picture, in case you might weaken their case for war?
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 56
If I’d known, I would have typed faster!
Thanks to you and Joe for standing up and fighting back. Your inspirational example is deeply appreciated.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 79
Ms. Wilson, Can you overcome the “standing issue” used under the states secrets doctrine, to deny you a legal remedy for damages you have suffered?
I’d just like to congratulate you on the publication of your book. I hope it’s a smashing success. I’m going out to get my copy this upcoming weekend.
You and your husband are the epitome of what this administration and its minions love to talk about but so rarely demonstrate: true patriotism and love of country and our Constitution. The people in this administration who outed you have committed treason and should be sitting the Supermax with fellow traitors like Robert Hansen.
I have followed your story from the start (I remember reading your husband’s editorial in the Times the day it ran). I cannot say how much I admire your fortitude and grace throughout this entire sad episode. My gratitude to you and Ambassador Wilson cannot be put into words.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 78
Are you saying your Iran nuke connection was just a lucky added bonus for Cheney?
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 28
Thank you for all your work. We seem to be in the midst of the run-up to war with Iran. Although you can’t comment on your work in Iran, can you recommend a source- an individual or organization- that can be relied on for accurate information about Iran’s nuclear program? Do you think ElBaradei and the I.A.E.A. are doing a good job? How can we counter the next “16 words” of disinformation ahead of time? The best time to stop a war is before it starts.
Sidney Blumenthal @ 85
Sidney – Colin Powell is a Shakespearean tragic figure.
I applaud the decision to include the blacked-out words in your book. In a perverse way it proves the point you were covert and working on important and sensitive matters. Brilliant!
I never buy any book when it first comes out in hard cover…your’s will be my first.
You and your husband are true American HEROS!
Thank you for fighting the good fight, please don’t give up.
Our country needs you still.
old gold @ 128
It reminds me of the Black newspapers in apartheid-era South Africa, who were forbidden to publish anything about protests and such. Great move!
Ms. Wilson,
Two questions. First, your book (which I bought this morning) helpfully reprints the Congressional Record item with the CIA’s letter to you stating that after 1987 you did 6 years, I month and 29 days of overseas service. Do you know whether the CIA properly recorded any of that time for service overseas you did shortly before your cover was blown by the administration – including, for instance, the work you did undercover (we know it was undercover because of the CIA’s unclassified summary of your career and cover history, which Fitzgerald put in the record of the Libby trial) in 2002 in several Middle Eastern countries, which you detail in your book? This obviously might (though it might not) have some bearing on Fitzgerald’s determination that you were not just undercover in the real-world sense of the term but also covert in the somewhat technical sense of the term under the IIPA statute.
Second, just to confirm, the call your subordinate received from the OVP was on February 12, 2002, correct? And you then heard from Cheney’s briefer about the VP’s own questions about the Niger story on February 13, 2002, right? Had you heard from Cheney’s briefer before received the briefer’s tasking of that date, which again was entered into evidence at Libby’s trial.
Thanks a lot.
In these perilous times for our country, it is imperative that smart, ambitious young people continue to consider a career in public service, especially the intelligence world. We need to sharply increase our intake of good candidates from different ethnic backgrounds and strong “hard” language skills. However, these are also times when our intelligence community is heavily politicized and morale is very low, which is distressing to me as a former intelligence officer and an American citizen. I hope that the CIA will pull itself together and shake off the increasing amount of politics that have been allowed to taint its mission and product; the very real threats out there demand that CIA deliver hard, good, intelligence to the policy makers, without ideological taint.
Welcome Valerie and my sincere thanks for all you’ve done for the country. My admiration extends for you and Joe continuing the fight to hold the cabal responsible for risking national security and perhaps you life for petty political revenge.
Many kudos and I look forward to reading your book.
Turkey is a big focal point, as the Armenian Resolution and troops to go against the PKK(again built by us much like Al Qaeida was at a previous time to keep our allies in line while fighting opponents). Most of us skeptics of current foreign policy seem to think your items touch along the lines of the Edmonds/Kwiatkowski controversies.
What’s the word on Hastert? Has he come to grips with his lobbyist contacts who were a big part of the overreaching narrative? Did Denny’s wide stance on the issue contribute in any way, along with some House GOP cohorts? Do Hastert’s lobby contacts in Turkey connect with Jack Abramoff’s jet set lobby trip to Europe?
Putin’s ability to tweak the region is something he’s thrown in our face, with his keeping Condi in a holding room for their meeting, before slapping Israel and America’s face over his visit to Iran.
America went from a big country run by little man syndrome in the person of GWB, to just being the little man on a big map.
We’ve read (here and elsewhere) there was an investigation in Niger by the U.S. ambassador and a military officer.
In light of that it seems strange they thought to also send another person.
Do you have any sense of why V.P. Cheney’s office would request another person be sent by the CIA to investigate the ‘yellowcake’ story in Niger?
Also, perhaps in tin-foil-hat territory, I’ve wondered from the beginning whether the Bushies had some reason for wrapping you up in this with your husband. Of course, more recently, it has become incredibly important to realize we don’t have the nuclear non-proliferation network covering Iran. So, what I’m wondering is whether there is any possibility they influenced you into suggesting your husband for the fact-finding trip. Is it possible they ran an operation within the CIA?
Third, if it’s not impertinent, I only read yesterday that the Non-proliferation Division was created in 2002 (or thereabouts). That’s surprising considering the importance of that work. Was the same work being done previously in the Operations Directorate by you and your work-mates?
I’d hate to think it wasn’t being done by anyone. In fact, I’d find it incredible.
Finally, thank you both for doing such great work for America!
a am gathering QuakerGirl @ 128
tragic, I don’t think so
most puppets and marionttes don’t know their strings are being pulled
powell knew his strings were being pulled and he allowed it.
I have no sympathy for this man and there isn’t a person who understands what a being a soldier means that could ever call this man “a good soldier”…when his country called him to stand up he laied down
One thing I think deserves mention. The Washington press corps has not fully shouldered it’s share of the blame for their complacency and, in my opinion, complicity all of this.
Bush’s commuting of Scooter Libby’s sentence should have been greeted with the same sense of outrage that greeted Gerald Ford’s pardoning of Richard Nixon. However, Scooter was a Washington insider and he attended the same cocktail parties as the pundits and millionaire reporters.
The same goes for the abominable Robert Novak. In a just world, this man should have been branded a traitor, rode out of town on a rail, and prevented from ever working in any media outside of propaganda outlets such as Fox News. But again, Novak is a Washington insider and his colleagues in the media have basically done for him what Bush did for Scooter.
Mrs Wilson:
Will you be involved in politics in future? I’ll buy your book today. Thanks.
Valerie, My copy of your book is on order but if your book tour brings you to NC, I will gladly buy another. My question is less serious, but on 60 Minutes you pointed out that we don’t KNOW who might be undercover.Within your ability to speak freely, I wonder if you could describe the sort of person who might be a NOC – would it always be someone who was highly educated in a field as you were, or would be be surprised to find someone in an “ordinary” job doing this? My husband was quite tense after your outing, as he feels he is “suspected” in his travels to Africa as he is a former engineer turned demographer who works for himself.
And, yeah, you and Joe are my heroes, too.(Met Joe and Larry Johnson at Yearly Kos and called them heroes. Yelled, actually.)
Mrs. Wilson, thank you so much for your long service to our country.
I don’t know if you can answer this question, but it’s one I’ve had for a long time:
We know that in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, Dick Cheney spent many hours at CIA being briefed, and exhorting the agency to bring him more and better intelligence. Do you have any reason to know or believe that Mr. Cheney knew that Valerie Plame was part of the Iraq group in Operations?
QuakerGirl @ 127
QG, look at the last words in the article.
A fine article which raises many good questions. “No End In Sight” was excellent, left me weeping in the theater.
Powell would do a service to history if he shed light on the issue you raise.
Any thoughts on outsourcing of intel?
Welcome Sid, Valerie and Joe!
Joe, thanks for drawing the parallels between what you and Valerie have endured and what happened to Bill and Hillary Clinton. I remember an article from The Nation (which of course I can’t find right now) that mentioned that, because of the constant barrage of officially-blessed GOP harrassment courtesy of Ken Starr’s OIC, nearly every staffer in the Clinton White House, down to the lowliest intern, had incurred hundreds of thousands of dollars each in legal expenses (in the form of subpoenas and the like) for a grand total of well over $50 million, much if not most of which was never reimbursed — without a single indictment, much less any convictions, to show for it.
And it wasn’t just Clinton’s White House staff that was forced into the poorhouse this way. Starr and his gang did the same thing to dozens of people back in Little Rock. The florist whose shop had the misfortune to be the one nearest the Governor’s Mansion was screwed by Starr’s OIC for over $100,000 in legal expenses. Why? Starr’s people thought he might have sold a bouquet of flowers that might have wound up on Monica Lewinsky’s desk.
Like many others, I find myself at a loss for questions, but thank you for all you’ve done and thank you for being here. We know this is a long fight, and we’ll keep trying to hold up our end.
Colin Powell does not rise to Shakespearean levels, Quakergirl. Merely a minion.
Valerie and Joe show what true patriot citizens can–and–do.
Before going all atwitter about a new Osama audiotape, MSNBC mentioned Valerie will be on KO Tuesday. Be safe in these swaggering times, Valerie!
And pups, remember, your library could also use a copy of this book when you buy your own at the Amazon link above.
Hi Valerie,
After the Libby appeal is adjudicated, do you think Congress should have Fitzy appear to answer questions about the whole mess?
Many questions still need answers…
Valerie,
Congratualtions on your new book.
May I be the first to suggest that a Democratic president come Jan. 20, 2009 is going to be looking for a new Director of Intelligence and they way you have handled yourself during the entire imbroglio with the Bush/Cheney White House should place you at the top of the list of candidates. No woman has ever held that new post, not to mention that of the CIA’s DCI, but times are changing and the country needs a fresh prespective on intelligence — not to mention a person in whom they have confidence. The “old boys” have had their chance. The Bushies cut short your career and the country’s investment in you. A savvy new president should not let your talent or career go to waste — clearly you have more expereince that many who have held the top intelligence post.
Best wishes for much success with the book, which I look forward to reading. Do enjoy your visit at FDL. I love my visits with this community and, indeed, as a present to myself spent my last birthday with them, only a matter of days ago.
John Dean
PS: Finally, I cannot depart without saying hello to you, Sidney — you are a perfect moderator for this special salon. But Jane has a nack for engaging FDL readers.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 133
they will facilitate that occasion only when those responsible for the degradation are brought before the bar of justice.
so long as these criminals have escaped prosecution the cia will continue to struggle with their recruitment capability and their moral.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 119
So you would say that, based on publically available sourcing, it is accurate?
Valerie, a quick question.
Did you ever come into direct contact with Dick Cheney or Scooter Libby when they made multiple direct visits to analysts at the CIA?
If so, did they come to know you and your identity during that time period?
Thanks again for your service.
John at 148 — As always, lovely to see you here.
Welcome MR. Dean.
On the issue of including the redacted portions of my book: that was a decision made by my publisher, Simon & Schuster, and I think a good one. It demonstrates the extent to which the CIA thought material in the book was “classified.” The vast majority of the redactions are related to the Agency’s position that I am not permitted to acknowledge my Agency affiliation prior to January 2002. For those that wish to read further background on my fight with the Agency over First Amendment grounds, my lawyers have put up a website: fairgameplame.com that provides all the relevant court documents and good insights in a user-friendly format on this case. It is currently on appeal.
Many thanks for being here, Valerie Plame. It’s an honor just to be here at the same time as you and, as well, to be here with so many of the creme of the FDL arsenal. I’ve no questions. You’re a great American and so is Joe.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 56
I likened it to the pamphleteers of the American Revolution.
I know you are swamped with questions and I can’t stay, but I want to add my small thanks to you and your husband, both brave Americans.
Valerie,
Welcome to the Lake! Thank you for your work and service to our country.
Bob in HI
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 133
Yes, if we have good intelligence, there’s at least a CHANCE we can get good judgment out of the politicos (present admin. excepted).
John Dean @ 148
oh dear, yet another priviledge, great to see you at the leak mr dean
Valerie, how involved will you be with the movie production?
Perhaps an ironic consequence of this long yet lucid national nightmare of ours — there is a lot less daylight between the ferverent supporters of the First Amendment and those who enthusiastically support the Second Amendment. You have provided an attractive embodiment of Constitutional potency for both camps.
Funny how unintended consequences translate into political opportunity… though as a tree-hugger, I say ask questions first!
Your galvanizing role as a patient but firm adult in this sordid saga has brought a sea-change in the search for truth. Our own egregious said it best last night:
“Truth is beautiful.”
Now we will see if it truely sets us free.
John Dean @ 148
great idea.
Welcome Mrs. Wilson….I greatly admire your courage and tenacity. Bought the book this morning right out of the box as my local bookstore did not have it on the shelf yet, but now do after I told them to get it in the window pronto.
Cheers to you both…
Left Coast
Christy Hardin Smith @ 72
I think Joe is teasing jayt for a comment yesterday. *g*
oops.
was just kidding sir. Would you believe the “evil twin” story?
Welcome Mrs. Wilson!
Welcome to the Lake:
Like Dick Cheney, I also cut out Joe’s Op Ed and kept it on my desk for months.
I couldn’t put my finger on it at the time, but had a vibe, that the “back story” on that article was going to be something explosive. I had no idea how right I could be.
As terrible as it is, the things that have happened to you and your husband, they have been the catalyst for the umasking of the Bush/Cheney regime.
Through the course of the trial, Pat Fitzgerald was able to pull the curtain back on the corrupt way this Whitehouse operates.
Many people are upset that he did not bring other charges and risk losing in court. What they neglect to focus on, is that by winning his ironclad case, he transforemd the information he uncovered during the investigation form “allegations” into “facts”.
These things are now irrevocanbly (unless Scooter somehow wins his appeal) “facts”.
Ironicaly, your outing may have been your greatest sacrifice for your country and may turn out to be the one with the most lasting impact on it’s direction.
I grieve for the loss of your governement career. I was never as happy or as fufilled as when I was in government service. I literally miss it every day.
Perris, I believe we are the Lake, not the Leak
perris @ 159
perris, your slip is showing…*g*
Welcome to Mr. Dean. Thank you for your kind words. Your thoughtful commentary and cogent analysis as this case has unfolded has been of great help to me and Joe. Because of your articles and posts on this issue, we better understod some of the legal maneuvering going on behind the scenes. With great appreciation.
Valerie,
1. Could you please add Pay Pal as a way to donate to your legal fees?
2. Is anything being done to find out who forged the Niger documents and also the other documents found so conveniently in the ruins after we bombed Iraq? I’d like to know if people in our own government are behind those forgeries as a way to create support for the determination to go to war. Coming up with documents, then asking the CIA to look into them but not counting on the CIA sending Joe — throwing a wrench into their dark plans — could have infuriated the culprits. It’s a conspiracy theory, but one I ponder often.
When Americans and people around the world witness President Bush commute the judged and sentenced crimes (that undermined US National Security) of Scooter Libby disappear with “a stroke of a pen”
Yet young black men in Jena Louisiana have District Atrorney Reed Walter tell them that he can “make their lives disappear with a stroke of a pen” and a few of them were at one point possibly sentenced to life for beating up a white kid.
How do you or how can anyone else have faith in our justice system? How?
Why are Ari Fleisher, Karl Rove, Scooter Libby and Cheney still clogging our air waves with their filthy, lying, criminal presence.
They should be in prison for outing you.
John Dean @ 148
There are giants visiting us today.
Thank you to Jane, Christy and FDL at large for offering such a forum.
-S
Mr. Dean you must have been peaking in our fantasy administration games during Late Late Nite posts
Valerie Wilson – DCI
Amb Wilson – Secretary of State
were some of our bests picks.
Thank you for joining us all today
Getting goosebumps here today, Valerie, Joe & John Dean – yowza!
“The very real threats out there demand that CIA deliver hard, good, intelligence to the policy makers, without ideological taint.”
Is this not what you and your husband were involved with, good intelligence? So the moral is when you tell the ideologically tainted executive, his intel is wrong, you get outed, and maligned, by an enabling media no-one is accountable?
Mommybrain @ 168
uggg…my opoligies to John and I hope a mod can correct my typo
Good morning Mr. Ambassador, Mrs. Wilson! Good Morning Mr. Blumenthal!
I’m sure it’s no secret in your home that we here at FDL, and Americans all over regard your service as heroic, and your outing as tragic.
I find myself too tongue-tied to come up with a question…
Just know this – we have always had your back, and we always will.
Thank you very much.
I grew up in Los Alamos. I have basically always been a critic of the work of that place. However, now going there to attend funerals of my friends’ parents, it has become very clear that we are saying good bye to a wealth of renaissance scientists who directed and operated the Laboratory’s work in the immediate aftermath and during the twenty and thirty years of the atomic era.
I suppose perhaps you may have had some contact with these people who really were more than brilliant, in a way that I think no longer applies to Lab workers.
Like so much in our society and culture, what is going on now is such a step down from the values that were once transcendent in our nation.
What a terrible loss.
Mrs. Wilson, it is an honor and a pleasure to see you at FDL.
And given that Mr. Dean is here, as well, I’d like to ask what you think about latest attempt at the creation of the new “shield laws” that protect reporters whose reportage furthers of the commission of crimes (see: Judith Miller) as opposed to coverage that protects the whistleblowers.
Ms. Wilson, I want to thank you for your significant service to our country in these difficult times.
My question-
Do you think Katie Couric gets it? By that I mean does she acknowledge the radicalism of the Bush admin and is she aware of contempt with which she and anyone who advances the WH agenda is viewed by the American people, or is she really as ingenuous as she appears to be?
The book salon here at FDL is usually much more interesting as the writers here have copies of the books that they’re able to read beforehand to guide the discussion. I see Christy nor Jane received books? Valerie, was this a publisher screw-up? I know that the WaPo, CBS, et all received advance copies.
Please tell me that it’s not another case of bloggers being treated like second-class citizens?
John Dean
That is a genius suggestion. Can I second that?
I think it’s fantastic to see this discussion on FDL–particularly since the writers on this site have played, and continue to play, such a central role in bringing this story to light and giving it the kind of coverage that mainstream print media initially would not.
Given that, however, it is disappointing to discover that Simon & Schuster neither purchased advertising on the BlogAds network that supports this and other progressive blogs, nor sent advance copies to FDL or any other progressive blogs.
It’s unfortunate that this issue has to be raised in this context, but the danger of not raising it is that it will be repeated.
In the end, my enthusiasm for this book and my admiration for Valerie Plame is not undermined by this inexcusable lack of professionalism on behalf of the marketing department at Simon & Schuster. But after I purchase my copy of Fair Game, it may be a while before I flip through the S&S catalog, or encourage my readers to do so.
Why has the confirmation of your appearance at the Wilson briefing session before the House and Senate INTEL Committee Chairs and Ranking Minority members, and each’s successive peer, not been mentioned more as the heart of the matter?
Was Mrs.Ledeen one of the loose lipped? How many degrees stray from chatter was then Sen.Santorum?
Why hasn’t Novack been charged and tried for his participation in your outing, Mrs Wilson?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 152
Yes.
Tony @ 151
I have that question as well. Did Cheney and/or Libby ever visit you or any members of your team to apply pressure on your work?
lhp @ 167 – Very well said !
Just want to say, the more I learn about what happened to you and the true extent of things, the angrier I am at what was done to you, and the more astonished I am at the extent of the lies that were initially circulated about you (”just” a desk operative indeed; even at the time I still thought it was a lousy thing to do). But to learn how much they compromised their own intelligence network for political reasons is just astonishing, and as you say, unreal. You were betrayed and as a country we all were betrayed by the very people who were supposed to protect that.
It seems inadequate to just sit here and express my admiration for everything you’ve done before and after, but I am truly appreciative and impressed. Thank you, again.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, thank you for standing up against the abhorrent behavior of our current leaders.
Sometimes I get the feeling that the people in power are running a psy-ops program against the American people. What have you found to be effective tools and tactics that we all can use to stop our country’s march toward fascism?
Thank you,
- Tom
I was hoping Valery would shed more light on Brewster & Jennings
Hello Valerie,
I do not have a question. I just wanted you to know that I admire you greatly. I have followed the CIA Leak case since Joe’s article was published and I cannot believe this sort of thing has happened in America. I’m just so grateful that you are alive and safe – please keep fighting the good fight, Valerie (Joe too). We need patriots like you.
Love, peace and safety to you and yours. Thank you for your service.
selise @ 80
Oh ditto. I just have to say thank you both for your service to our country before and after all this.
I’ve frequently thought how amazing it is that you’ve been able to maintain such a low profile until now, and my instincts say you prefer it that way. So the fact that you’re standing up in such a public way is just as heroic. Again, thank you for that.
It really galls me that you’re out and if I understand it correctly, many others who disagreed with the administration have been shoved out too. Leaving people like Fleitz in place. ACK! Now, that’s a national security issue if ever there was one.
If you care to comment on this I wouldn’t mind.
Sorry I’m late. I couldn’t make up my mind what to wear. ;)
In New Mexico, there is, of course, a great deal of controversy over the future use and mission of Los Alamos. I would love for the heavy concentration of great minds there to turn their attention to some of the current crises we face today, much as they did in 1943 and the development of the atom bomb to be used against Axis powers. How exciting it would be to see the Los Alamos scientists be put to work on developing clean, alternative fuel technologies, for example.
Pachacutec @ 107
That is an excellent question, Pach.
The deeper question, as I see it, is why Laura Rozen, rather than Marcy Wheeler, was chosen to write the explanation portion of Fair Game.
I think all of us would agree that Marcy Wheeler is better acquainted with the facts of your story, has written about it for longer, has produced more scoops, and has done more to bring out the truth of what the administration did to Valerie Plame.
Valerie, it would be greatly appreciated if you could tell us why you chose Laura and not Marcy to explain your story in your book?
Can you discuss any items related to the Oil for Food scandal?
It appears two back channels were established, one to launder funds for formation of infrastructure necessary to shape political ends. The other as a means to weaken Saddam by putting in place the desired people ready to succeed him in event of a coup, so the oil would flow regardless of the depleted and diminished country under sanctions weight.
Mission Accomplished.
So after the book and the movie (who’s gonna play you?)
What’s next careerwise for you?
Given that, however, it is disappointing to discover that Simon & Schuster neither purchased advertising on the BlogAds network that supports this and other progressive blogs, nor sent advance copies to FDL or any other progressive blogs.
Ms. Wilson–
First let me thank you for your service to our country. Nobody should have to go through what you did from our “own side”.
I have three questions, and I’ve tried to phrase them in ways I could imagine you might answer, though I understand if not…
1. Would the dynamics of the current crisis with Iran be materially different had your work continued unrevealed?
2. ‘Operation Merlin’ is said to have been an attempt to set back the Iranian nuclear program by giving them false blueprints. The focus on the Iranian nuclear program of late has been on the uranium side. However, weaponizing uranium is so easy there’s not a nuclear physics lab on this earth that couldn’t do it by themselves. (As you probably know, the uranium design of the Manhattan Project was not even tested before use, because it was so obvious that it would work.) Would an operation like Merlin indicate, at the top policy levels, a greater concern with a plutonium program than has been widely appreciated?
3. Is there any reason you know of that we should accept at face value any claims that may come out of the OVP concerning the Iranian nuclear program?
P.S. As you may know, it has occasionally been a popular thread item around these parts to cast the Plame Movie. After your recent turns on the interview stage, I think you definitely have the star power wattage to play the role yourself.
perris @ 190
I would imagine she is blocked from doing so by her oaths and confidentiality agreement. If the CIA blocked her from publishing information about herself that was in the public domain, they surely would nto be pleased and accepting of her commenting on a now defunct NOC agency.
And this admin would dearly LOVE to find some reason to make life even more hellish for the Wilsons than they already have.
Strategerie @ 171
Given some of the comments, I think the giants visit here a lot. They’re just not as shy today as they usually are in making their presence known. *g*
TomR @ 189
Tom @189, I have to take exception to your referring to Bush, Cheney, et al as “leaders”. George Washington was a leader, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a leader, Martin Luther King was a leader, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are authoritarian thugs.
Ms. Wilson,
Can you comment on Larry Johnson’s report? His story states that you were targeted by Al Quaeda yet both the White House and the CIA refused to provide you with protection.
In response to an earlier question, I had no idea that Vice President Cheney and his then Chief of Staff Libby were making an unprecedented number of visits to Hqs to speak to analysts. This was around the time (February 2002) that Joe went to Niger at the request of the CIA. And I did sit in one meeting – timeframe unclear to me – with Mr. Libby. I was just a “backbencher” though, with no speaking role. How ironic, huh?
Just about every intelligence agency in the government is being run by an active duty or retired general or admiral. Any thoughts on this and how it skews intelligence assessments?
looseheadprop @ 181
Thirded.
Simon and Schuster choose the reporter Laura Rozen, not I, based on her strong reputation and writing skills. There would have been a clear conflict of interest if I suggested or offered someone to write the Afterword…
This is just fantastic.
Welcome Valerie,
And Kudos to you for the book. I just came back from BJ’s and lo and behold, 3 stacks of copies (now minus one) were there. They don’t stock books unless they anticipate a top seller. Let’s hope so.
It was this case and your misfortune that turned me into an on line (and beyond) activist. Reading Marcy and then finding FDL gave a new meaning to the concept of grass roots justice work for me and I would venture to say for many more who spend time at the Lake.
Thank you for your service, for your persistence, for your bravery in the face of evil.
Sidney Blumenthal,
Worth noting that your account of Armitage is a bit muddled and almost certainly wrong on a key point. It’s true that one of the enduring mysteries of the case – for me at least – is why Armitage was not charged either with the leak or, perhaps especially, with some kind of obstruction-type charge after he belatedly disclosed to Fitzgerald that he had blown V Wilson’s cover to Bob Woodward almost a month before he did so to Bob Novak. However, first, Armitage did not out V Wilson to Novak over the phone during a call he initiated. It’s true he reached out to Novak sort of out of the blue in June 2003. But that was before Joe Wilson published his op-ed. And then he blew V Wilson’s cover to Novak during an interview on July 8 2003, in person, during a fairly long interview.
Second, it is almost certainly false that Armitage’s exact motives were not interrogated by the special prosecutor. Take a look at the affidavits Fitzgerald filed on August 27 2004 and September 27 2004, a year after the investigation had started. He was still looking into precisely the question of Armitage’s motives. It is completely possible that Armitage successfully misled Fitzgerald about his motives. But there is almost no question that was a central question for Fitzgerald.
Valerie- Would you have any suggestions as to how to cover the loopholes in the Intelligence Agents Identity Protection Act. It seems that some of the requirements to prove express knowledge of the COVERT activities of the protected agent, rather than the fact that the officer worked for the CIA and wasn’t declassified, seems to have tripped up the prosecution of the leakers.
Would making it incumbent on those in positions who have access to this classified material seek clearance from the intelligenbce agency before they publically release an employees name or identity be a worthy change in the Act?
Also, based on the public and Libby trial records, do you have any suspicions as to who in the CIA communicated your identity to the OVP/Cheney?
Was it someone “on exchange” from the State Department who formerly worked in WINSCAP (Division of Intelligence)?
Or someone with legal background in the CIA that knew your identity from another situation?
Or was it someone in the Chain of Command above you that you believe was so irresponsible?
Were there multiple exchanges of the information to the WH?
What agencies of the Executive initially received these leaks, in your opinion?
Ms. Wilson:
In reading the documentation and legal briefs at http://www.fairgameplame.com the decision to block you from discussing your employment prior to 2002 makes no sense at all, even from a right-wing partisan point of view, that I can tell. Especially since many of the documents in question are already in the public arena.
Illumination, please, if you can?
Sidney Blumenthal @ 85
Sidney. I watched the John Bolton nomination hearings. When Senators Kerry, Biden, Dodd, Kennedy, and Lincoln Chaffee were demanding the NSA intercepts that Bolton had “allegedly” illegally accessed that “allegedly” had to to with communication and negotiations of Colin Powells with Iran and other nations. I really thought I was going to witness these Senators jump over the tables and inflict some whoop A– on Bolton.
Have these intecepts ever been released? Was John Bolton spying on Colin Powell?
Bush & Dick were on a roll, until you Wilsons showed up and rained on their parade.
White House polling numbers haven’t been the same since.
I’m going to put this address in comments for those who are able to contribute; I had no idea about this and think there are many here who would be proud to contribute to
http://www.wilsonsupport.org/
Today’s Washington Post review of Fair Game states:
and
Will you and Joe have an opportunity to correct the continuing erroneous impression left by this review that you sent him on a junket? It’s an outrage that this continues to be the WaPo’s focus. It’s as if the OVP is still pulling their strings.
I’m doing my best to be subtle, but I need to know: why aren’t there any BlogAds for your book? After everything Marcy and Jane and Christy did to move this story, you couldn’t get the publisher to make a $10,000 (or less) BlogAd purchase?
How many books do you think this chat is selling? How many hours did Marcy, Jane and Christy invest in parsing every legal filing and twitch of Karl Roves lip? Honestly, for thousands of people that will ultimately purchase your book, I’d suggest that the blogosphere initially sucked them into the story…
Is it anger? Are you miffed that Marcy wrote a book about your case before you did?
I dunno. But this is really, really sad. This isn’t the way friends treat friends. The blogosphere has had your back for years. You finally get a huge book contract and ignore everyone that stood side by side with you all those years.
I’m just glad that Marcy and Jane and Christy are decent people. If they weren’t, well, after this, who knows who’d be willing to stand beside the next betrayed government official… But, alas, they are bigger than that… I’m sure they won’t take the lesson you seem to be wanting to teach them.
I implore you to insist that your publisher make a blogad purchase. Make this right.
Was that fact brought up in trial?
Did Libby forget meeting you yet keep detailed notes of everything else he did or planned?
peanutbutter @ 188
what peanutbutter said.
Thank you, Valerie Plame Wilson, for all you have endured, and for pushing back.
I write about some of the threats we experienced in the book, which Larry picked up on and ran with. We had several serious, credible threats. This one in particular also targeted Mr. Tenet, Mr. Rove, and Mr. Ashcroft as well as me. I went to the head of CIA security and asked for protection at our residence for a few months (through the November 2004 elections) because Joe and I were particularly concerned about our two young children. I was denied any protection. This decision by the CIA, which touts it’s “we take care of our family” attitude so often felt like another betrayal. Tenet, Rove, and Ashcroft all had 24/7 protection already, and I felt very, very vulnerable.
Valerie,
Many thanks to both you and your husband for all that you’ve done for our country. I think John Dean’s idea about your future is a good one. I hope President Edwards picks you!(sorry..I had to plug my candidate!).
I am concerned about the CIA or any of these gov agencies ability to censor people and exercise so much control over their free speech.
Why do we / you in this case, let the censor you as you obviously have the interest of the American people in mind and are intelligent enough NOT to disclose sensitive material.
This seems like paranoia and intimidation?
What gives?
Val and Joe are the best!
We are looking forward to the good work that you both may do here in NM. It is a huge honor that you are here!
I will buy a copy of your book for my father who will be doing everything he can until he dies to “change the mission of the Laboratory.”
SteveAudio @ 210
You’ve got a bad link (odd comma inside). The right one is here.
Re New Mexico: If you and hubby desire to get away from the kids (and civilization in general) there are lovely B&Bs in the Jemez Springs area. You can hike and fish in the river.
Joe Wilson @ 39
(*gulp*)
Um, Ms. Wilson, before I say anything that might incriminate me… have you ever shared with your husband any of your knowledge about using an AK-47?
I have followed this terrible injustice very closely thanks to the wonderful FDL family. It is so hard to understand what was done to you and your family and for what? But, I want you to know how much we appreciate your service and your courage. I will buy the book.
The issue of supressing hher work history fits in with Cheney’s original decision to betray her NOC status.
This country is being run by spiteful children.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 204
Thank you! Very ironic. I’m relieved to know this, actually — the thought that they might have known just where you worked when they blew your cover is even more disturbing that the thought that they did it carelessly without regard for the consequences.
Peterr @ 221
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 56
They did a great deal to educate all of us on this case and the importance of it. We all thank them.
If this is true, are there any pseudoblogonyms anyone would care to share?
Mrs Wilson , what an honor to be able to tell you how grateful i am for your service for my family!
I have followed your story from day one and I did get to meet your husband at the 2004 convention and asked him to pass my “Thank You ” on to you.
What a disgrace what this administration did to you and your family and any and all of your contacts, on our behalf.
You will always have a special place in my heart for what you have endured on my families behalf!
My Husband and i have a dear friend who was an employee of the CIA , and he as well left early. I do not know what occurred for him to take early retirement..he says jokingly, he would have to kill us if he told us!! lol…
No one who devotes themselves and their lives to protecting Americans should every have their cover leaked, that in my book is the worst treason their could ever be.
Please stay safe and enjoy raising your children.
Hopefully one day their will be accountability to those who have harmed you and your family!

Mr.Murder @ 135
I don’t see any parallel between Al Quaeda and the Kurds. I think Turkey like China like other former imperial countries tends to snap when it thinks it sees separatists.
———–
Valerie Plame Wilson, any thoughts on how our next president could help lessen the er tension between the Turks and Kurds? The Bush administration has done nothing but step on toes in this region as far as I’m concerned.
I, too, would like to thank you for your service and express how much of a hero both you and your husband are. My question is, is there a set amount of time wherein an ex-agent cannot speak of anything connected to his/her service? I ask because we hear from Larry Johnson and Bob Baer is on TV all the time, yet you seemed to have been restrained for all this time since you were outed. The point I’m trying to get to is, is that particular to you, or is it somewhere written in CIA rules that ex-agents cannot say they are ex-agents for at least X number of years once they sever from the agency? I’m looking for fairness and even handedness, or whether there is any such.
Joe and Valerie – I just want to thank you both for your service to your country and your courage in speaking out.
We need more Americans like you!
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 206
My mistake. I am not familiar with the ins and outs of the publishing world. Still, it seems odd to me that conflict of interest rules apply when choosing a journalist to fill in the details of one’s own autobiography. I hope that Simon and Shuster reconsiders this policy in the future. Thanks for answering my question.
Valerie, do you agree that your outing by OVP was treasonous ?
I have no question here. I just want to say how much I admire and respect you and Amb. Wilson. I wish the absolute best for you in your pursuit of justice, and that you can raise your children in as normal an environment as possible under the circumstances. The love in your relationship is obvious to all. I confess to even having had a dream about it, which I regret I can’t remember in more detail.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 219
That just makes me furious all over again! Valerie, you are a True American Hero and I applaud you!
Someone has already gone to fairgameplame.com to check out the site and asks good questions. I do not have any logical or rational answers to the way the CIA has acted other than to say it is my belief that the CIA has allowed itself to be used as a tool in domestic poltical issues. The case of Flynt Leverett’s censorship by the PRB is illustrative. The PRB told him they found nothing classified in his article on US policy toward Iran, but the White House intervened and they “couldn’t do anything about it.” I thought intelligence professionals should be better than that. The last 20 months or so of working on this book really have felt like I’ve dropped down Alice’s rabbithole.
Valerie,
Without commenting on the content of the items you are preventing from discussing, can you reveal if publicly available information you wanted to include in your book was classified ‘retroactively’(ie. your employment start date)AFTER you submitted your book manuscript for review?
Thanks
BTW, obviously, I haven’t read Ms. Plame-Wilson’s book, but I have read Mr. Wilson’s book. If you haven’t, check it out. I thought it was going to be extremely dull, esp. when it looked like the bulk of it was going to be a recounting of his diplomatic days. As it turned out, that was really the most interesting part – even more so than his recounting of the Novak-Libby skullduggery.
A great read!
T- @ 230
I was simply picking up on Valerie and Joe’s comments about lurking at the Lake. John Dean said the same during his Book Salon visit, and I think there have been others as well.
In case my suggestion was more opaque than I intended, explicitly put it is this: if this is how netroots all-stars are going to be treated by the Washington elite, it will be a lot harder to convince the next set of bloggers that may be interested in tracking a case to do as much. In the end, this isn’t solely about you – unless you make it that way. In the end, it is about the sustainability of the blogosphere.
If you think Jane, Christy and Marcy helped you, it makes an awful lot of sense to help them. You’ll be proving a model – one that encourages citizen journalism and engagement in legitimate issues.
looseheadprop @ 182
All in favor?
Ms. Plame,
Have you any information about your former co-workers and their role in torture? It seems that the CIA has been given it’s marching orders from John Yoo, David Addington, et al.
Is this new behavior for the CIA or has that been part of SOP in the past?
I cannot imagine you or Larry Johnson taking part in such criminal behavior and assume that you would never condone it.
Bustednuckles @ 226
hey, busted, read this:
http://dneiwert.blogspot.com/2…..-take.html
Ms. Wilson:
Is it your personal feeling that your betrayal was only a knee-jerk retaliation for Mr. Wilsons’ op-ed, or do you believe that the actions of the admin were a more fully thought-out “two-fer”, given the nature of the work you were involved in at the time?
Diane @ 173
goosebumps and hopes for justice a plenty.
Why aren’t there any BlogAds for your book?
My guess is that it is an oversight on the part of the Simon and Schuster promo department — as a major publisher, they are focused on old media.
They probably don’t realize that blogs have pushed more than one book to the top of the best seller lists, on the power of buzz alone.
Blogads would be an inexpensive ad buy, that would reap enormous rewards.
The title of your book is Fair Game.
What does fair game mean, from the standpoint of your legal fight against Dick Cheney and co-horts?
I’ll join the chorus, even if I’m late, in thanking you for your service?
You mention the morale problems in intelligence, and the difficulties finding new recruits. Have you or Amb. Wilson given much thought to how the country might best address that situation?
You mentioned before that morale was low at the CIA due to the political interference. Has it reached a point where there are many analysts rebelling against this illegal interference, especially considering how the Bush administration has blatantly proven through this affair how low regard for the lives of personnel (not to mention our national security) really is?
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 217
Porter Goss, who never should have been confirmed,
was DCI at the time. The damage that he and his wrecking crew did
will be with us for a long time.
May I suggest to fans of Valerie and FDL that they purchase her book through this link? (Or the one in the sidebar?) A portion of the purchase price goes back to the Lake. :-)
“Given some of the comments, I think the giants visit here a lot. They’re just not as shy today as they usually are in making their presence known.”
[sits up straight; combs hair]
Valerie, if you have a moment;
WH and VP must have known while spreading your identity around, that it would leak; yet they spread it anyway. Also they should have known that upon a leak, that your operation would terminate destructively.
Conspiracy rumors about ‘planting’ WMD aside, do you think it’s possible that WH may have seen termination of your operation not as a liability, but as an advantage, allowing them to have greater control over information from alternate sources, whatever those might be?
In response to a comment, I will note that in Joe’s book – which was indeed cleared by the Publications Review Board – he writes that when I read Novak’s column, I was crestfallen because “(insert number of years of service in here) was gone in an instant.” At the time of the book’s publication (April 2004), no one at the CIA seemed to object to my length of service being put in Joe’s book. It is the land of the absurd and their behavior does nothing to actually protect our national security.
Petrocelli @ 235
What Petrocelli asked.
My mistake. I am not familiar with the ins and outs of the publishing world. Still, it seems odd to me that conflict of interest rules apply when choosing a journalist to fill in the details of one’s own autobiography.
my guess is that Val misused the term ‘conflict of interest’ here. Above, she discusses the need to be completely uninvolved in what Rozen was doing to avoid any kind of ‘conflict’ that would allow the CIA to censor the afterword. That is probably the ‘conflict’ she meant. (there is usually no conflict of interest in authors choosing the people who write forwards and afterwords)
From page 5 of today’s Froomkin Cheney Beats the Drums of War:
“‘I can tell you all the intelligence services in the world that morning were running my name through their databases to see, did anyone by this name come in the country? When? Do we know anything about it? Where did she stay? Who did she see?’ Plame Wilson says.
“Asked what the ramifications of that would be, Plame Wilson tells Couric, ‘Well, it’s very serious. It puts in danger, if not shuts down, the operations that I had worked on.’
“‘Did you ever hear about anything that happened to anyone with whom you had contact as a result of the leak?’ Couric asks.
“‘Yes I have, that’s all I can say.’ . . .
¿
“Asked if she thinks the president was in on this, Plame Wilson tells Couric, ‘I don’t know about that. But I, like most other Americans, saw President Bush say on TV that he would fire anyone from his administration found to be involved in leaking my name. It turns out the president is not a man of his word.’”
In an interview with USA Today’s Richard Willing Plame complains that reporters who sought to keep the names of Karl Rove and other sources confidential were “spoon-fed” by White House officials who used anonymity to “just lie and shoot off propaganda.”
Edit: Froomkin then goes on to excerpt a number of reviews from the LA Times, NY Times, and Boston Globe.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 219
This is incredibly sick. This is only more confirmation that they wanted you out of the way.
What would be their reasoning for not protecting you….after they outed you?
Mommybrain @ 243
Ed Zachary.
Valerie,
Just wanted to be off topic for a moment and say that it is so refreshing to see two people genuinely in Love with each other.
My wife is severely disabled, and our marriage has all the stresses of yours without the all intrigue. The patriotism and sacrifice that you and Joe have given to this country is a gift beyond measure.
But the Love you and Joe share is an inspiration to those of us who still believe that Love is important.
Valarie Plame Wilson
Thank you for your courage and stamina in the face of adversity…at all times.
It is going to take a long time to reverse the damage done by this Administration.
The damage has not been limited to any particular branch or department, as is becoming clear now.
The thieves have had their hands in the til so long that an unconcionable act such as your outing has been treated as ‘fair game’ or business as usual.
I think Mr. Dean’s suggestion deserves careful consideration.
God bless you and your family.
Thankyou Valerie and Joe Wilson.
My question:
Do you or Joe have any new information about information about who was behind the forged Niger documents(Leeden,Feith, OSP…)? The connection to the White House?
I know none of you asked for the roles that circumstance dealt you, but I can think of no three people who stood terrible tests with greater courage and truer understanding of what this nation is about than Valerie Wilson, Joseph Wilson, and John Dean. I wish I had the power to reward you justly.
-ck- @ 247
I passed Jeffery Feldman’s comment on to someone I know who works at S & S in Canada. Hopefully it will filter its way to TPTB in the US.
PMA — well said. Bravo.
Valerie, Joe, Sydney and Mr. Dean, thanks to all of you for you for you tireless work and efforts for us, the part of the American people that have been disenfranchised by this criminal administration and the for the most part doggerel press and corporate television.
If it were not for heroes like you and for also the fine folks here at FDL and other weblog sites many of us wold have given up hope long ago. It is not in our nature though but just the fact that you too are fighting and helping to restore our constitutional democracy is inspiring and helpful in these dark and dangerous times.
Valerie and Joe, I hope you like Santa Fe. One of my favorite geographical spots in the lower 48. I went to school at St John’s College on the hill there, probably not far from where you live. Wonderful place, wonderful food and wonderful climate. My very best to you and your family.
I have no more information on the original source of the forged documents than what Knut Royce wrote about in his thorough book, The Italian Papers (at least I think that’s the title). No one has been able to get to the bottom of the mystery. Lots of good possibilities: Mossad, former CIA operatives, but no one really knows for sure.
VPW @219
That’s despicable. Every time I think this administration can’t sink any lower, they do! They are such an embarrassment to this country, and everyone like you and Joe who has worked tirelessly on behalf of all of us.
pma @ 268
Nothing but the truth would do for these folks.
Thank you all.
I’ve got several friends that work in publishing. If they are extending multi-million dollar advances, you can be damned sure that the author could get them to spring for a few thousand dollar ad buy if they really wanted to.
Since this story really flowered in the blogosphere – well… there is really just no justification for the Wilson’s to even ask for this chat without first inquiring about an ad buy. It really is the epitome of shamelessness.
(BTW – why did CBS, LA Times and NY Times get galleys? Why not Marcy and FDL? – the betrayal is multi-level, really… where were the LAT and NYT and CBS when it mattered?)
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 194
Ms. Wilson, You bring up an excellent point! It seems that we in the U.S. continue to allow our brilliant minds to drift away instead of allowing them to address current problems. Their input would make a big difference in gaining new advances in health, environment and global warming, for example.
Thank you for being here today and thank you for your service to our country.
(Retired CWO2, USN, Crypto Tech)
Valerie,
thank you so much for your time and thoughts today, this has been wonderful.
Busted
Do you have any opinion on CIA’s use of “outside contractors” over the last 30 years affecting the agency’s mission internationally? (It’s something my deceased mother used to complain about).
pma @ 268
You do … support the candidate(s) who vouch to give justice to the Wilsons !
Ms Plame, is the anecdote about you and Karl Rove in church an accurate one? I’d love to know his answer to the question, “I’m Fair Game. What’s your name?”
Ms. Wilson, we are told over and over that republicans are the national security party and the dems are wusses, but you are living evidence of the opposite. Were many of you peers in CIA progressive like you? I have always felt that there must be a cross-section of America in the intelligence community, just as there was in the Navy when I served. Has that been your experience?
Thank you so very much. I watched your interview last evening on 60 minutes…I’m sorry it was K. Couric asking questions..a little embarassing given the gravity of the situation..but I have to say I just loved it when Joe asked her how she knew Karl Roves ‘ wife was not CIA…brilliant….I support and admire both of you…true patriots with dignity and intelligence…thank you from the bottom of my heart..
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 239
I have been reading everything that Flynt Leverett writes for the last four years. I often link his articles about Iran here at FDL. Is Flynt the man on Iran that we should trust?
Well besides International Atomic Energy Agency Mr. El Baradei who has stated that Iran poses no “imminent threat” and that there is no “hard evidence” to back up the unsubstantiated and endlessly repeated claims about an Iranian Nuclear “weapons” program.
Since Bob Graham has made some items public record from his appearance at the Miami Book Fair, can you discuss these as well?
“-He is naming names on the Saud/Al Qaeda connections.
People before 9-11 asked some of these be denied visa…
Letting Osama go from the Tora Bora…
Naming names of Saud support…
Tommy Franks, closing the door, “we are not engaged in War in Afghanistan,” he continues “military personnel are being redirected to Iraq”…”
I have seen the comments about S & S not buying any blog ads… I am totally new to this world, but I will certainly speak to the publicity folks there. Joe and I are very supportive of FDL as well as the other very good blogs out there that provide information on important issues.
I implore you to insist that your publisher make a blogad purchase.
Mike, I love you and your work, but you have no idea how “publishing” works.
The author is the lowliest of the low when it comes to promotion.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 132
My request for comment on this answered, much to my dismay. Thank you, though.
And the right is pushing back against an Arabic languages school in New York. Maybe they prefer to continue to put their own spin on what comes out of the Middle East.

Sorry there was such a negative reaction to “Shakespearean tragic character” but I stand by that comment. Colin Power is NOT a caricature. Colin Powell was unable to rise up to the demands of a crucial moment in time and this defined his greatness, his weakness, his inability to stand up to his political enemies. I don’t think he would have resigned if he were a caricature of weakness. Humans just aren’t that simple. He was more than “just a good soldier” he was playing politics outside his league. The difference between a tragic and heroic character is the choice the individual makes in a defining moment. Sorry, I just don’t see Colin Power as just some spineless political hack.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 257
Just to underscore my comment way up above, the betrayal is utterly breathtaking and I cannot imagine the level of anger, frustration and shock you have dealt with. Just opening the mail or answering the phone must have caused second thoughts.
We watch things unfold and as we act on what we say here, we pray that there will be future opportunities for our country to recover.
Jeffrey Feldman @ 183
I find this little anecdote really sad. I never figured the Wilson’s would hold the values of the ruling class and treat us like dirty f’ing hippies.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 285
we are hoping your visit here will get your book to number one
I personally think you and your husband should work the circuit seperately, one, then they other but not both…I think that would get the most play
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 284
As a nascent medium, still tottering on baby foal’s legs, this is really appreciated and really important. The sustainability of the blogosphere is an open question right now. We need our allies to speak up for us.
Thank you for this.
Amazon.com Sales Rank: #23 in books.
((lets not be asses about blogads.)) ;
p.lukasiak @ 261
Valerie, is p. lukasiak’s explanation what you actually meant by ‘conflict of interest’ correct? Or was it an S&S policy? I just want to understand what the problem is so that we can come up with a solution to avoid people like Marcy being left out in the cold in the future. Thanks!
Just offhand, I would say that the loss of our freedoms and basic sense of democracy is a vastly more important issue than blogads.
The part in the book about wishing I could see Karl Rove at the Communion rail (we attended the same church in NW Washington) was what I HOPED could happen, but did not. I got the idea of FAIR GAME from his comment to Chris Matthews about me, and I thought it made an apt book title.
Did you know that OSS stands for “Oh, so social”? Is it time to retire the Agency, before another cold war is launched for lack of uses to put all those resources at its disposal?

[we’re holding off for a bit — Ed]
Hello Mrs. Wilson,
It is a privilege to speak to a great American like yourself. Do you think you were outed in an attempt to shut down Brewster Jennings? That’s always been my take on it.
Thank you so much for your service. I wish the White House valued your service as much as we the people.
Gin
QuakerGirl @ 286
Haul Powell’s ass before Congress shackled!!!
Yes, by “conflict of interest” I meant that I could have NOTHING to do with the AFTERWORD so the Agency had zero authority to review the material. Sorry for any confusion. Marcy has already done an excellent book on this, as we know…
Matt Stoller @ 286
Hope this is snark. Mrs. Wilson has no control over how/whether the publisher publicizes her book.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 272
Would it be completely nuts for me to wonder if someone in Mossad’s neighborhood had the capacity to engineer military grade anthrax spores? Not that they or anyone they know would ever have any use for it, just that they can, you know.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 259
I think this is in response to my comment; and it’s even more absurd than you say, the Congressional Record for goodness sake has published the precise amount of time you served. But my question is a little different, and goes to putting to rest once and for all the rightwing talking point that the IIPA could not have been violated when your cover was blown because you were not a “covert agent” under the technical definition of the term in the IIPA statute. Fitzgerald judged otherwise, which should be good enough for Novak, Toensing et al. But my specific question is whether the CIA’s count of 6 years, 1 month and 29 days of overseas service (in the Feb. 10, 2006 letter to you, entered in the Congressional Record and reprinted on p. 403 of your book) includes any of your covert work overseas in the five years before your cover was blown by the Bush administration.
Just to be precise, Fitzgerald determined you were a “covert agent” according to the IIPA, meaning you had done covert work overseas in the five years prior to having your cover blown by the Bush administration. So that is not in doubt. What I am curious about is whether the CIA, for their pension calculations or whatever, properly counted your work overseas in that period as part of “overseas service” according to their definition.
QuakerGirl @ 286
Quakes, I was agreeing and directing you to Mr. Blumenthal’s Shakespeare at the end of the article.
JF @ 301
As a published author I beg to differ.
Valerie…
Which reporters who concentrate on those areas you dealt with in the past do you most rely on to keep up with current developments? In other words, who should we be paying attention to…. and who should we be ignoring?
“Charlie Brown’s son has been there several times and is going back. Charlie should have won his election.”
Amb.Wilson quote, is this a reference to vote tabulation machinery?
To what extent has this been done abroad? How much of our original coalition had plausible use through reinforced corruption spiked by the likes of Diebold?
We’ve yet to see this addressed here on the record, what about abroad?
Was there any unofficial chatter about the potential impact of vote fraud in the current foreign policy narrative?
If it only applied to people like Ahmadinejad or Chavez, would that not be proof the contrapositive position also existed?
A strong, independent intelligence service is more critical now than ever in our country. We are in very dangerous times facing new threats that go beyond any Cold War rubric. It is essential that our intelligence community be free of politics and gives the policy-makers just the cold facts. All of them.
Peterr @ 245
I am often stunned by the caliber of the people who recommend to me that I might want to “check out” FDL. Obviously, I don’t tell than that I swimhere regularly. *g*
There are some very serious people reading this blog
Jane Hamsher @ 303
My apologies. I defer to you.
Refresh isn’t bringing up the new thread, nor is the above link.
As others have already said, you are an absolute hero! Thank you for your service and your courage to stand up to this mis-Administration!
IMHO, your outing can only be called treason — and, like murder, I hope there are no limitations on prosecution.
May God bless you and your entire family — all of you (kids included!) have certainly sacrificed much for all the rest of us!
JF @ 311
No apology necessary, that is just not my experience, I can’t speak for others.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 293
Yes, the title is perfect.
I must say, after reading your comments I am even more persuaded that Mr. Dean’s comments about your strong suitability for the Director of Intelligence position are squarely on target.
Matt Stoller @ 288
This was not necessary and is an obvious blogswarm. I am sorry to see it here. See above comment by Valerie.
Diane @ 312

Valerie, speaking of cold war rubrics, what do you think of Condi? Her (mis)handling of the Russians and Putin?
Diane @ 314
It was there and now gone.
Refresh isn’t bringing up the new thread, nor is the above link.

(is that you diane?)
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 309
I appreciate your point about the politicization of the Agency. I was alluding to the unfolding drama between Putin and Rootin’ Tootin’ in the aftermath of the five nation confab in Tehran.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 132
It seems the MSM and others are focused on the CIA taking the hit for all of the false pre-war intelligence. Can you discuss what you know about Douglas Feith, Wurmser, John Hannah and others who operated out of the Office of Special Plans.
Americans have yet to witness anyone held accountable for this false and deadly intelligence.
I keep calling Senator Rockefeller’s office asking where is the complete Phase II of the SSCI?
My only comment suitable for public consumption on Condi Rice is: have you heard Steve Earl’s song “Oh, Condi, Condi”? Joe has played it so much that our young song knows the words and catchy tune…
I’m guessing that “How to Publicize Your Book” is not a course the CIA teaches their undercover folks at The Farm.
Of course, if it were, I’m sure VPW couldn’t talk about it . . .
I’d suggest major blogs crosslink via advertisemnt.
Start supporting other blogs in your blogg roll, so the interactive aspect gets reinforced.
As for Condi Rice, maybe she’d give you a visit Val, if there are some good shoe sales in New Mexico.
What are your thoughts on the politicization of the DOJ, does it reflect what you saw in the CIA?
John Dean @ 147
Hello JOHN!
That is a brilliant idea. I’ve often thought that it would be good for a new administration to invite back all the whistleblowers and firees if they want to fix what this administration broke…that is if they want to fix it.
Re: Jane…So true! Jane has such talent for putting the right people together in the right places…not to mention community building.. oh and snark. The old saying “I came for the Plame and stayed for the snark.” is still true. She’s awesome.
Valerie,
I get this feeling that we only know the tip of the iceberg. There is much we have been forced to deduce by reading between the lines. Aside from the portions of you book that were redacted, is there is bigger picture that we are still missing the jigsaw pieces for? Is this another labyrinthine Syriana-like plot that we will be trying to tie together for many years to come or are the dynamics much simpler?
And is Bush a glorified signing machine, a willing dupe or a knowledgeable collaborator just disguised as a willing dupe?
BTW, you and Joe have to be the hottest (and nerviest) anti-neocons I’ve ever seen. Where do you find that courage?
My best wishes and deepest thanks to you, Ms Wilson. Welcome.

Valerie Plame Wilson @ 307
We can only hope that the abuse of power under the Bush/Cheney regime will make the intelligence services receptive to these reforms.
As a published author I beg to differ.
Jane, you would definitely be the exception to the rule.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 321
Here’s a link to the lyrics.
I think it is true that the successess of the CIA are forever secret, whereas all the failures are for the world to see. The CIA actually got it right in much of the pre-war intelligence on Iraq. It’s what the policy-makers did with it (cherry-picked) that led us to the disaster we face today in Iraq.
I knew nothing about Feith’s office in the Pentagon, only that it existed and there was great resentment. I thought Seymour Hersh’s New Yorker article on the “stove piping” of intelligence was excellent in this regard.
I get about 15 min. lag between posts on FDL.
Was :15 after the start time for the thread that I could read it here…

Patty Morlan @ 220
Damn! And I was hoping a Democratic President would appoint Joe as UN Ambassador. (That ought to really frost Bolton’s balls!) But John Dean’s idea is also very good. OTOH, both John’s idea and mine would require once again packing up the kids and moving to the east coast, either NY or DC, and if they like NM, and they truly want to just live private lives like ordinary civilians, they’re entitled. Whatever happens, I wish them all the best!
Howdy, Valerie!
Joe and you are heroes and true patriots to me. Pre-ordered your book long ago and looking forward to its arrival any day now.
I, as solai at 203 commented, read via Larry Johnson last night about how Security at the CIA told you were on your own when in “2004 the FBI received intelligence that Al Qaeda hit teams were enroute to the United States to kill Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, and” you. I just read your response at 221.
My questions (whatever you feel comfortable divulging):
Do you still remain in danger?
Has Gov. Richardson been helpful in providing security to Joe and you in New Mexico or assisting you in any way?
Isn’t it ironic that an Administration that brags about protecting Americans from terrorists turned its back on Americans such as Joe, your family, and you?
Also, a big howdy to Jane, Christie, Sidney and all you fire pups! Thanks for hosting Valerie.
P.S. I also second John Dean’s remarks that a “savvy new [Democratic] president should not let your talent or career go to waste — clearly you have more expereince that many who have held the top intelligence post.”
Valerie, will Joe be with you on your Larry King appearance?
Boo Radley @ 206
Actually, my thinking is that in New Mexico there’s going to be a set of House seats and a Senate seat opening up next year. Those would also be good, new jobs for Joe and/or Valerie.
Listening to noon news here in Phoenix, I hear that Osama has a “new” (and improved?) tape out.
Is this another “convenient distraction” from the promotion of Fair Game?
“Somebody” must think the book might offer too much “truth” …
Just a thought …
AZBelle @ 341
My immediate thought as well.
I have to say that all these positive comments and really good, insightful questions are wonderful. After nearly 4 1/2 years of sustained attacks on our characters, it is such a treat to be among friends. It really has been a long strange trip, but Joe and I have small children that one day we will have to answer to when they ask “what did you do?” We felt we had no choice. If none of this had happened, chances are pretty good that right now, we would be living somewhere overseas and I would be working on counterproliferation issues. Not to be.
Thanks for being here. Good luck! I’ll check back later!
musicsleuth @ 333
Ow, my eyes!
Is that a reworking of Simon & Garfunkel’s Cecilia (sp)? (No audio.)
AZBelle @ 343
Looseheadprops, Look! Shiny Things! observation is quite accurate , actually.
Bob Graham made statements of Public Record about Saudi/Al Qaeda contacts and requests to block Visas prior to 9-11 for several hijackers and terror cell supporters.
Valerie can read his and review it legally, Just qualify it as opinion?
Mr.Dean, could this be said?
Yes, Joe will be on a segment of Larry King with me tonight. He’ll be beamed in from Santa Fe (hey, someone had to stay home and watch the kids). I understand that the lead will be the Calif. wildfires, but we’re on after that. Thanks for asking.
Valerie,
Should our society be wise enough or fortunate enough to find and embrace ‘the Politics of Truth’ (pun, deliberate, a fine book, folks),
You and the Ambassador shall have, forever, a well-deserved encomium in any honest history of our nation’s subsequent decency and value to humanity.
I would also endorse John Dean’s suggestion in the shorter term.
For the present, thank you both for your decency, your courage and your loving humanity.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 344
That’s very sad. I am so sorry you, your life and your family were screwed with.
Are you going to do a book tour?
I live near Portland ORE and would take a day off in a heartbeat.
I’ll add my thanks to the others above for your service (and your husband’s service) to defend this country from enemies foreign and domestic.
Good luck with the book.
OT: I think I scared Aldrich Ames sh*tless early one morning in the early 1990s as I crossed the street at 37th and R Streets, NW while making my way to the Georgetown campus. This guy who I assumed was a chauffer waiting for a diplomat (his car had diplomatic plates) sat up in his driver’s seat (he was rummaging in the glove compartment and the front passenger door was open), hastily grabbed from the back seat what I mistook to be pepper spray and held it up toward me. I smiled at that moment, because I realized his window was up and the pepper spray would have been useless. I felt bad for him. He seemed so nervous.
Only many years later did I realize that it could have been Ames with a camera.
Which intelligence service do you think has my photo? :)
as another one of we, the people, thanks so much for your service.
Is the book tour coming to Denver? I wouldn’t miss it for the world!!!
Bustednuckles @ 351
I wondered also if there were any radio interviews scheduled, particularly on npr?
I wrote to Tom Ashbrook and producers about it for “On Point” this morning.
The DNI helped background the stovepipe on May 03, 2001 when Tenet added the Dep’t of Energy to the umbrella of Cabinet Agencies and Intelligence Community departments that reported to him and voted on overall conclusions of their combined analysis.
Valerie’s overqualified, albeit her confirmation hearing would be a case pattern for entrap, ment by GOP types themselves claiming Legislative Immunity for Free Speech.
I know whose side would probably win the battle of the minds… it wouldn’t have to be the one with the most lawyers, either.
zennurse @ 353
I heard Ed Schultz saying that Valerie will be on his show tomorrow.
I’ll have to go back to work in a minute, too. No questions, just a little more of the traditional FDL love to you:
(((((((Valerie Plame Wilson)))))).
I’m thrilled that you were reading all this time; your story brought me to FDL, and its now a can’t miss. Thank you for all you have done for our country.
Valerie your work was focused on non-proliferation.
I have spent a great deal of time at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s website, reading documents and letters from other nations about proliferation. Over and over again Israels stockpiles of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons come up in letters from Iraq, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia officials. Many write that Israel has been allowed to operate in the shadows and continues to be unwilling to sign the non-proliferation treaty.
How do you think Israel’s stance on proliferation effects the situation in the middle east?
I am doing a pretty intense book tour and will be in Portland 14 November, I think (need to check that date…)
I notice someone mentions Colin Powell. Mr. Powell is a man without principle. A Bush family toady. This man is not deserving of sympathy. Wonder if Mr. Powell agrees that impeachment should be off the table?
What really chaps my butt is that absolutely no thought was given to the fact that people might (and probably will) die because of your outing. Their vengence knows no bounds.
Just know that my husband and I think of you and your family often and hope and pray for your safety. If anyone deserves a medal it is not George Tenet, it is you and your husband.
I’m losing hope that the populace will restore the constitution and value the work that you and others have done.
All my best,
Gin

Matt, I am a great admirer of yours, but I thought this was way too harsh. The Wilsons got dragged into a war in which they were bludgeoned. Their patriotism and sacrifice for country have been on display for a long time.
If S-S thought blog ads would improve their net profit, they would. I think S-S is wrong. I learned about FAIR GAME
Ms Plame thank you so much for your years of service to our country.
I doubt we will ever know or quantify the chilling effect of what happened to you upon public servants in agencies throughout the federal government. We are learning more and more of the consequences of the politicization in various agencies. I am sure there are many civil servants who have been frustrated and sick by what they have seen in their work places but when they see an administration willing to burn a CIA NOC…well they probably calculated their own chances of being destoryed should they speak out to be 100%.
Again Thank you for your service
I will be on both “Fresh Air” with Terri Gross and “All Things Considered” of NPR today and tomorrow.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 361
OKK, here’s a link to Mr. Blumenthal’s recent article @ salon.

Valerie Plame Wilson @ 362
Excellent!
Must get cleaned up, no dirty mechanic fingernails that day……
scribe @ 340
If these Freshmen could be appointed to the right Committees (say Intelligence) they could go far in reforming many of the more horrific policy errors of the last 6 years. Val would be great at assessing just how different the “sausage” being handed them differs from the original “beef”. She’d be able to judge how much tripe was included!
EPU’d from the front page (upstairs):
What’s going on??!!? Re: perris’s comment below:
perris @ 9
Biodun @ 7
Finishing my comment at 12:11, if it’s not on Olbermann, FDL, tnh, or the local news, I miss it. I hope S-S reconsiders. There are a lot of ways the Wilson’s can help the progressive blogs. The Wilson’s have been through hell and they have to look out for their own. It may look easier from your perspective than it actually is.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 365
Yessss!!! Fresh Air is my favorite podcast. You couldn’t have picked a better interviewer. Terry Gross is superb. So insightful and penetrating. I hope you enjoy(ed) it. I know I will.
Oops – forgot to say, I will be buying the book, using the FDL Amazon link. Methinks best-sellerdom is on the way…
An Indy Bookstore owner would be smart to ad on the blogs since the Publisher appears to have overlooked such an opportunity…
Is there a web calendar listing the book tour dates and places?
Thank you for coming here today
In response to an earlier post, I am in touch with some former colleagues, but I have been very careful not to put them in an awkward position by reaching out to them. I know for the most part I have their support and I know they continue to try and do their utmost to protect this country and despise the way politics has gotten embedded in the CIA.
A link to the book tour schedule will be appreciated by many!
Val…
Were you unable to book any of the Sunday morning gasbag shows, or had you given Couric the exclusive “first interview”? (just curious, because Krugman wasn’t booked yesterday either despite the release of his book, but MTP spent 40 minutes discussing Hillary for the umpteenth time….
Peterr @ 322
I would agree.
Biodun @ 370
I’m not seeing an ‘upstairs’ yet.
Really? A link to the book tour? Okay Dokey. I’ll talk to the folks at S&S and see what they can come up with. I am truly overwhelmed by your interest and enthusiasm. Thank you.
zennurse @ 305
This is not directed at you Zennurse. There was no offense in your response. I am pissed at the blatant racist comments about Colin Powell equivalent to the “noose” that people here thought was so terrible in Jena. Look at this response:
“Haul his sorry ass before congress shackled”. People self-reveal in their writings. The last time I heard a statement similar to that was by a Klansman advocate in the South. I guess there are people who don’t want Colin Powell and Shakespeare to be used in the same sentence. Figure that one out.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 378
Thats two of my questions answered,
I can die happy now.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 366
I’m so glad. Not everyone here is a fan of npr, but I enjoy it. I hope you enjoy your interview with Terry Gross, I hear many people do.
I’ll be listening, thanks for answering.
This is not an easy format, you must be tired. I think our guests should have fast-typing folks to transcribe their thoughts so they can concentrate.
Dear ONES, May God bless you and your efforts. This NATION does need you to be successful! If this HELL can happen to you it makes my pain of personal harm (on 12-12-1993) caused by SHEA KEWIT KENNY Constractor, ((BILLIONaires) on the Hollywood Ca Subway being covered up by the Dept. of Labor just a little more understandable! My wife & I fought them by our selves for eleven years, going twice to the Ca. Supreme Court, only to find out that the contractors had friends in HIGH places. Please, hang in there, we know how hard it is!
Thank you, Jim and Darlene
You mention Hersh’s ‘Stovepipe” article. In there he says that the idea that the Niger forgeries were the work of former CIA officers, who intended to see if they could entrap Cheney, et al with false info, was a subject of “watercooler gossip” at CIA in the Fall of 2003. Were you privy to this gossip? What do you think of the point Hersh’s source is making? And what do you think of Hersh’s source? – telling the truth? Who might the source be? Some have speculated James Woolsey, as the story can be construed as an attempt to tar the VIP group. What do you think?
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 345
Yes, Joe will be on a segment of Larry King with me tonight. He’ll be beamed in from Santa Fe (hey, someone had to stay home and watch the kids). I understand that the lead will be the Calif. wildfires, but we’re on after that. Thanks for asking.
Well, there goes my boycott of Larry King – haven’t watched him since he dissed the Dalai Lama on his show shortly after Hurricane Katrina, for not offering anything “other than prayer”.
I’ll make an exception for this one…
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 381
A Blogad with a list of upcoming book tour events!!!
Valerie, Thank you so much for your service to our country. Are you going to be in the Atlanta area. I would love to meet you.
Valerie Plame Wilson @ 193
Amen!
I have noooo idea who Seymour Hersh’s sources were for the stovepiping article he did. Clearly, he gets good ones. As for the source of the Niger forgeries, yes, I suppose it could have been former CIA operatives, but who knows? They were apparently poorly done, and I’m sure whoever did them had no idea the trouble they would ultimately cause.
Once again, I would like to thank you, I have been here a few years now and have followed your travails closely.
After reading the book and getting you perspective of the emotional horrors you both have been through, it is with a great lifting of spirits to see you come back out swinging.
As was once said,
The best revenge is to live well.
I certainly hope that for you and your family.
Bustednuckles @ 383
Busted, honey, put your head between your legs, breathe into a paper bag… You’ll be ok.
How can this nation (we know Iraq may never) recover from the lack of accountability in regard to false pre-war intelligence, the outing of you (Valerie), illegal wiretapping and data mining, out of control journalist, but most of all the unnecessary and immoral deaths of millions of Iraqi people and close to 4000 American soldiers and hundreds of thousands of injured and millions of Iraqi people displaced.
How can we ever recover from the disastrous policies of the Bush administration?
What can you say about Ari Fleisher?
musicsleuth @ 380
I was just there. There were about 8 comments. Then I read perris’s comment and refreshed. It was gone… Obviously perris was also there to leave his comment #9 for me. Bustedknuckles was also there. I’m not hallucinating…*g*
(And of course the mods can confirm all this.)
Geez, Val has been here for two hours….and I had no idea that much time had passed! Great chat, Val! Thanx again!
Ann in AZ @ 388
Have you considered running for office? You wouldn’t happen to be in Heather Wilson’s district, would you?
I support a full an unconditional pardon in the matter of John Dean. Hopefully the next president will be bold enough and smart enough to agree.
QuakerGirl @ 382
Then direct your comment to one individual. Do not smear a group of people as one for responding to your comment.
Apologies to Valerie and Jane and Christy for this hijack, but any implication, inference or sloppy conversation is exactly the kind of sleaze I expect from BushCo, not my fellow FDL commenters.
Thanks Zennurse, I get flustered pretty easily. eh?
Thanks for answering my questions. You and Joe are great Americans. Best of luck. I look forward to reading your book.
Sat in a meeting with Scooter, eh? Hummmmm . . .
Thank you for joining us for this chat, Valerie, and good luck with your book tour.
