This video works for me on about five levels and not only because I like to play in the rain. Those of us who follow political events feel caught in some kind of time warp where we see things almost happen in Congress and then can’t believe they’ve messed up again.
Do they hear us? We are in that space between, where we have knowledge of something important and are trying to raise the alarm. We feel a sense of urgency and can’t understand why others don’t.
Life may always feel a little off balance for those of us who are trying to create change. I wonder what I would be doing with my time if this administration had not totally shoved us into ruin.
But for the moment I’m seeing the glass half full. We—and I don’t mean the progressive left, I mean FDL—are most likely responsible for one of those Blue Dog votes flipping this week. Reports of progressive victories are coming from very Red places like Alaska. Dodd and Feingold and Whitehouse are stepping up. And our reputation as one of the best communities in the blogosphere continues to grow.
Let’s do what we can here in the space between. And please, take care of each other.

Hey pups!
hey!
san!
(buggar..missed!)
Good evening dear friends. Thanks egregious.
Egregious!!!
EG!
Hi everyone
Evening egregious!
katymine @ 8
Aloha, Katy!
Hi Katymine. How are you?
Egregious with the hope alley-oop.

TexBetsy @ 11
I hurt more today…. went to Trader Joe’s for milk and OJ and that really whipped me…. did get a great salmon steak stuffed with feta & spinach which was wonderful with brown rice and asparagus.
So been sitting here lurking and reading…
EG, very nice bookend to a day that started with your Pull Up A Chair post.
Yeah, me bringing the hope here is a little ironic. But that’s where I am tonight.
FDL continues to rock.
you got it spot on, egregious. The space between.
Good evening :)
So those who stopped by to meet BlueAmerica candidate Howard Shanker today… what did you think?
I have to confess that two of my best friends work on his campaign.
tw3k @ 13
My new nickname?
Or, an obscure legal reference, In Re…?
Or, an abbreviation of the Scottish word ‘ree’ which means wild. Your choice.
egr- you captured what I have been feeling exactly, with your words:
Life may always feel a little off balance for those of us who are trying to create change. I wonder what I would be doing with my time if this administration had not totally shoved us into ruin.
Suzanne @ 15
Thanks for your words of encouragement. They mean more than you might realize.
Sorry you’re hurting katymine.
egregious @ 20
some hi or lo from northern euros in irc.
(((((((katymine)))))))
Love and peaceful thoughts coming your way, my dear. You mean the world to us.
back again, mostly lurked last thread cuz i was downloading pics from my camera, selecting the best, getting them ready to upload to the web, blah, blah, blah.
So! picasa link of some of the cider-making fun that’s gone on the last two weekends in the extended newdealfarm family
Brought back a couple more gallons of apple cider to share tonight, they’re in the fridge near the tiki lights. Organic, only a few hours old … cinnamon sticks for those who want to heat it up.
TexB and Katymine, if you want cider, sit tight. I’ll wait on both you dears.
Thanks Valley Girl. Good to know other people feel the same way.
ndfg, don’t forget about us folks up here in the mod tower.. we get mighty thirsty… can ya send up a jug and some glasses and 3 cinnamon sticks for those of us who want it heated
thanks ndfg. been quite a day around here. texteen needed a trip to the ER, but he seems to be mostly fine. i’m exhausted though.
ndfg does Oxycotin go with cider?
I remember those days… living in Oregon and gathering boxes of apples to make into cider. Canning it in gallon jars to keep it. Boy those were the days
did anyone let downstairs know?
TexBetsy,
How are you feeling today?
Whitehouse is stepping up? I thought I heard that he voted for renewing the craptastic FISA legislation. Is there more good news I haven’t heard?
Off topic, it turns out Dumbledore is gay. For some reason, it makes me a little happy to learn that.
One Big Union

thank you egregious.
great post.
we are not being hysterical.
we are rationally alarmed.
and we are tired of feeling we should be afraid.
it is time for every cheneybu$hco traitor to feel afraid.
afraid that history will tell the truth about them.

ooohhh, my bad! The mods here are the bestest anywhere. I’ll carry it up myself pronto. (and there’s not much, but i brought home a few of the most perfect apples & made some apple crisp. Errmm, I sampled a little to make sure it was ok … here’s some ice cream to have with it! Only the best for our FDL mods.)
egregious @ 33
was doing great until i spent the whole afternoon at the ER with my kid in pain. he is still hurting, but will be alright.
TexBetsy @ 30
Yikes! I do not miss that part of single-parenting. hugs to you & your family.
Thanks yellowdog jim.
Greetings! I’m still getting over the shock from the last thread of Suz being a Republican. What does that mean to you, Suz?
egregious —
I love your Saturday nite posts.
Your sentiments echo mine exactly, egre. But I’d have to admit to being furious at times with the DLC style of unConstitutional fervor that flavors this Congress.
And FDL also seems to echo the constant loss of enthusiasm because of the never ending refusal of the Democratic Leadership to take hold of how serious the situation is.
God! the list is endless of unAmerican ideals that have been set aside and hardly a wimper from those that are supposed to represent us.
In the 90’s it was a given that the DLCers were going to ignore the ‘fringe’. But it is apperant now they are all on their own and against something like 70% of us.
It is just insane!
This is why I cannot be silent on the FACT that it is time to ruffel feathers over calling out the elected Bosses that are not willing to represent their constituents, but dictate to us. And Nancy heads the list.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 37
The Mod Squad thanks you!!!
katymine @ 31
prescription meds, yikes, i dunno. The strongest thing i use is asthma meds, no problem there.
Canning …. we’re lazy. We put it in the deep-freezer.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 39
i never tried the other kind, but disabled single parenting is the pits. kid is at dad’s house now though.
Raph Levien @ 34
Ditto, pleased when i read that earlier.
TeddySanFran @ 42
me too, or ding, or amen, or whatever the correct agreement phrase is.
katymine @ 19
I was very excited to read it afterwards, as I have on my YK canvas shopping bag one of Howard’s campaign buttons, given to me by a dear friend when we were in Chicago.
TJ @ 41
It means that I made a choice when I was 17 (but 18 by the time of the election) and have never changed it. It means that I still get all the propoganda and I really fuck with the stats when I do my weekly Zogby poll among others I participate in.
It really tweaks the numbers when a registered Republican in a rural area polls progressive.
TeddySanFran @ 42
Thanks Teddy!
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 37
Much obliged, ma’am.
Aah, I guess my wit is too dry…!!!
I hope those guys in the video are wearing rubber boots…
TeddySanFran @ 49
:) OH Teddy that is really sweet!
I had a really hard time behaving myself…. but Howard shined and rightly so…
Great post to end the day.
But tell me, is this a typo?
Hoping it’s not.
reaction to the dumbledore news.
I have no idea what I registered as initially. However, I’ve had to reregister every time I moved, and have always registered based on which primary I wanted to vote in, not by my beliefs.
Colbert on Wait, Wait
TeddySanFran @ 49
A most impressive candidate. I put him on my list of people to support in various ways.
katymine @ 31
Actually regular cider goes fine with the Oxy. It’s the hard cider you want to avoid while you’re on it! The alchy and the drug will pretty much make you extremely sleepy more than likely. More woozy than even the medication itself makes you. (not that you can’t have it, but extreme amounts are a no-no, and i doubt you’re that type.)
CT that article was hilarious.

egregious @ 60
I was impressed – I liked the way he answered questions. Sad to learn that Mary Kim Titla seems to be so unfit for this race, but Skanker seems to know more about Native American issues there than does Titla.
too lazy to post individual news stories. but all the ones i would be posting one by one are here.
TexBetsy @ 67
too tired after spending all that time with the texteen in the er – and yet she still brings us musical cake… thanks for all you do tex
Suzanne @ 68
that helps me relax.
that and a two hour nap. :)
yellowdog jim @ 63
sing it, brother!
Now that I can tattle….
Mary Kim Titla in a radio debate was clearly anti-choice not just pro-life.
Ann Kilpatrick has said that it is stay the course in Iraq….. they are trying to get her on video and get it out on youtube… She really has no positions on any of the issues…
The great thing about Howard is that he is so willing to listen. I got the slides from the guys from Energize America and sent them to the campaign and they loved them.

Whitehouse gave a terrific half hour interview Thursday on Washington Journal about the attorney general hearings.
Here’s the Cspan video.
solai @ 56
dunno if anyone’s replied here.
Sheldon Whitehouse, US Senator from Rhode Island.
not The whitehouse Whitehouse.
i liked whitehouse in the one hearing i saw. don’t recall which one though.
Whitehouse did vote for Rockefeller’s telecom-immunizing FISA bill, though.
CTuttle @ 72
thank you! always been one of my favorite songs. It has nothing to do with the fact that i have brown eyes and a crush on ol’ Van.
CTuttle @ 36
Sorry about the missing “F”, but the only reason I know that would lead you to need to type a security code is if you have incorrectly typed in your password.
If you have reached that screen, more than once, my best guess is that repeatedly entering an incorrect password has resulted in the system locking you out. At this point, doing a full reboot, and perhaps waiting overnight, is the best thing I can suggest.
And FWIW, I agree with TSF.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 77
Perish the thought…!!! ;-)
RBG @ 78
quickly straightening up and looking professional – crap, the big boss shows up and i’ve got my feet on the desk – no one tells me nothing…
(smacks self on forehead, exclaiming to self where are your manners, girl!)
Egregious, yet another excellent post. Yours is a voice i treasure highly in the powerful chorus of the Lake headliners.
TeddySanFran @ 76
Pissed me off, too Teddy. I’m not sure what that is about. I’m finding it hard to stomach that he’s so spectacular working with the Judiciary Committee, and weak in a place like this.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 47
Ditto on the Whitehouse comment. Wyden maybe, but I heard Whitehouse voted to let it out of committee for a floor vote, except that it’ll go to the Judiciary committee first, I thought. Isn’t Whitehouse also on the Judiciary committee?
egregious @ 73
Having trouble with the link. Is he leaning toward rejecting Mukasey? That would be great news.
CTuttle @ 79
my fellow firepups are always so understanding ;~)
RBG @ 78
Mahalo, RBG, I shall try again tomorrow! I think everyone knows me by now…!!! *g*
Suzanne @ 80
Damn, Suz – I thought we had the place to ourselves. Excuse me, I have to put on a shirt.
So let’s issue an invitation to Senator Whitehouse to join us for a session at FDL and ask him about the telecom vote. He’s done well otherwise, especially on restoring the Department of Justice.
The Lurking Mod @ 87
I certainly hope you’re male…!!! ;-)
egregious @ 88
I like it eg
egregious @ 88
I’m with that. He actually may not be able to say as much as we’d like, being on the Intelligence Committee, though.
Still a great get for the Lake!
The Lurking Mod @ 87
You go to blog with the mods you have…
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 26
Thanks – cool restored cider press.
How much cider per pressing?
RBG @ 92
Some fresh apple cider, sir?
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 81
Wow, thanks ndfg!
RBG @ 92
An excellent crew, if I might say so…!!! 8-)
Suzanne @ 90
I do too, but I’ve never seen him interacting in real time at a lefty blog, let alone a foulmouthed femblog like ours. *g*
katymine @ 71
katymine- I haven’t had time to read the BA chat with Shanker yet.
I researched a bunch of the AZ candidates a good while back. He was impressive back then. But, back then, it looked like it was going to be a total free for all, like 6 or 7 candidates. And, also, based on my research at the time, it looked like it was a really huge and disparate district- more of a geographical challenge etc. than most candidates have to deal with. Tough.
But, as I said, he was impressive back then.
solai @ 84
In another excellent Judiciary Committee moment for Whitehouse, he spanked Mukasey hard on day 2 of the hearings. Looking for vid now. It was beautiful.

damn.
CTuttle @ 89

Suzanne @ 90
Me, too. Has he explained his vote anywhere? Has anyone asked him why he voted that way? I went to his website….nothing. If we had true reporters, someone would have asked.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 100

Lessee, i think we were figuring a five-gallon pail 3/4 full of ground apples gave about a gallon of cider. Works much better if apples are coarsely ground first (we didn’t learn this from experience, we wisely profited from other folks mishaps). Kinda depends on size & juiciness of apples also. I think first day two wheelbarrows full of big juicy apples gave us about 7 gallons.
My baby bro the machinist will appreciate the compliment on the press. Didn’t look so great when he got it a few weeks ago. Not only did i see it the day he brought it home, had to help him get the thread loosened. It hadn’t been used for years, the grease on screw had solidified, etc etc. He cleaned it up, tung oil on the wood, etc. Didn’t get a picture uploaded yet of the antique grinder and its stand. The screw is a square thread which is apparently an old type so maybe we can date the press by that.

And in the end, they’re going to approve him. That’s been a sure thing from the start. Now, if after the Thursday debacle, they reject him, I will have renewed faith in our dems. But Leahy said he liked him, Schumer has always supported him and the rest just go along.
And, FWIW, approving Mukasey is tantamount to approving of torture. That is now very clear. If they vote for this guy, the blood will be on their hands.

I’m off, too. Thanks for the video, the great diary and the great conversation. Truly, what would we do without each other?
here’s another voice i adore, Madeleine Peyroux. I love her cover of Between the Bars. (written by Elliott Smith, i seriously think he should write and leave the singing to anyone else. What a blah voice he has, sorry, ES fans.)

Wow… quite an honor
NDFG : I’m not a huge Elliott Smith fan. I just thought I’d alert you in case you said that in front of someone who IS. Also, it’s almost exactly 4 year since he died on 21 Oct 2003. Besides, I thought that Dylan guy didn’t have such a great voice and look what’s happened to him.

Thanks, i worked a four-month temp contract with a fan, that’s where i got tired of his voice. Didn’t say anything to her, usually our musical tastes coincided quite well. It was 2nd shift, she was shift lead, & would put her itune playlists over the company sound system. The rest of us agreed quietly that we were pretty darn tired of ES soundtracks over n over again.

Love me some Acca Dacca (as we call them). The cemetary where Bon Scott is buried is a half-hour drive from me. I used to pass it every day on my way to work. Sometimes you’d see groups of tourists headed for the Pilgramage to Bon.
yellowdog jim @ 167
Do you have a link to indicate that Couric will be doing the interview? Couric is an airhead. Please confirm.
I started reading the lake back when red (christy) and jane were emailing back and forth and jane was quoting those emails – all on plame. was before jane finally convinced chs to start posting here.
katymine @ 181
When I linked to your comment, something didn’t seem right. Blogger certainly was a blast, wasn’t it?
And Newton is correct, Dec. ‘04 was Jane’s first post.

Suzanne @ 195
With some luck, Amy Goodman will have a shot at a Plame interview and we’ll get some real journalism turned towards this.

I consider the Eagles to be the Monkees of country music. They had a marriage of convenience with Joe Walsh (they needed credibility, he needed a paycheck). It was akin to putting lipstick on a pig. Never cared for them. I reach for James McMurtry or Chris Knight when I want an americana/country fix. I’m just sayin’.
if we are very very good, maybe KO will interview Valorie Plame

Katie Couric. Oh, gag. I don’t miss my tv since i gave it away 2 yrs ago and the only thing i’m willing to watch at the kidz places is Daily Show (oh, alright, and ANTM, but because i laugh just as much as at the Daily Show).
I will not miss Valerie Plame’s appearance at the Lake where there will be a discussion of substance and intelligence. That’s why i will lurk, i’ll let the phd’s go at it *g*

I can’t agree enough. I hate listening to commercial radio stations. If I want to listen to Elton John and Billy Joel all freaking day, I’ll buy the albums. Oh, silly me, I did, 20 years ago. I either listen to News Radio, Classical or our National Youth Network, all of them publicly owned (oh yes, here in Australia we have socialised radio (shock, horror). None of them have commercials either.

I watched little segments of the 60 minute segment with that klown katie [not this katy] and it seemed to me more that klown katie did not like being over shadowed by a more beautiful classy woman. I knew Valerie Wilson was a knockout but to see her in action, more so…. klown katie did not like that at all…. I was seeing cat fight behavior which completely overshadows any real reporting.
hola, senor gato… some catnip perhaps (special el gato stash)?

it’s going to be Katie and Valerie.
i feel the same way.
katymine @ 207
Are you saying that you have already seen snippets of this interview?
katymine @ 209
i haven’t seen any of the promo’s for it… don’t watch network crap (except for My Name Is Earl – which fucking rocks btw)
!El Gato Negro! @ 204
!El Gato! One of my favorite bloggers! Here, i will break out some of the organic catnip i harvested several weeks ago for my little family.
Fun aside, i do love your blog & check it every day. I haven’t yet had the courage to post a comment, maybe someday i will be brave. I like how you surgically rip some of your subjects, mighty fine claw control there.
Technicolouryawn @ 200
I think my judgement of the Eagles is marred by my mega-eagle-24/7-fan next door. Still, I never liked their stuff much, I found it dull and uninteresting. I didn’t mind Joe Walsh solo. I’m blessed in that I never want a country fix.
Ya for two days I have seen leaders on the 60 minutes interview on various networks… hey when you are recovering from surgery…. TeeVee and Baseball is the opiate that fills the days….
I fervently hope Valerie will school Katie… I shall bid ya’ll another fond adieu! Aloha Oe! *g*
Suzanne,
that sounds like paradiso, gracias.
Funny, I was just about to go hunt up some gato-nip, eh?
so.

the 60 Minutes link has lots of videos.
maybe the whole thing chopped into youtube size bites/bytes.
Uh, would it be appropriate at this point in the evening to say how much I despise Katie Couric? She is just a really really bad interviewer. She interrupts continually, doesn’t pay attention. She is not “there” for the conversation. Like, she is thinking, what is the next clever question I can ask, because “it’s all about me”.

That would be a fair assessment of my view.
However, I’m not sure it ranks in the same category as another statement I agree with, viz Punaise: “My contempt for Lieberman knows no bounds.” Lieberman is more dangerous than Couric.

Sara, you’re in good company. Your best bet is strong community ties. Make friends. Be a friend. Work for change every day. I’m just behind you in the years. Many of us are, or are older.
Hi, Bob. I thought I was pretty much by myself. Couldn’t sleep.
thanks, you guys. I just get so scared….
I read upthread that sheldon whitehouse is supporting dodd, but there was no link. Is this rumor?
whirehouse is one who would be likely to support dodd, I hope so, anyway.
um…whitehouse. sorry.
bobschacht @ 244
Sweet! Standup or electric?
Sara, I do sometimes, myself. But panic serves no purpose other than to immobilize us and help achieve the fascist’s goals. That constitution…I CONSENTED to be governed by that. I did not consent to be governed by a fascist state and by people who care for nothing except their own power and survival and to hell with everyone else. Geeze, I was trying to encourage you and I got pissed lol.
Lindy…no problem. It pisses me off, too!

sorry i had to do that… but last week, according to nyt, whitehouse voted both for the senate intelligence fisa bill and against an amendment to remove telco immunity.
i’ll be watching to see if he votes for an AG who doesn’t know if waterboarding is torture. even good guys can be overcome if they drink too much of that DC koolaid.
wow, that was rude of me. i didn’t even read one comment before submitting that downer comment. my apologies.

Appparently it was torture when we executed a Japanese soldier for doing it to an American soldier after WWII
Smgumby @ 262
whitehouse asked good questions… now i want to see how he votes.
newtonusr @ 169
I would bet the farm against it. But I can’t explain it, either.
my bold
My comment was in no way an allegation, just musing. I’m a huge fan and want to understand a seeming inconsistency.
We’ve primarily seen him in the context of brilliant interrogation and presentation of facts toward rule enforcement (AG nomination hearing aside).
FISA thing is more like rule making and balancing corporate interests v. individual rights.
Over simplification, but seeking some distinction to explain this shocker. Of course, we don’t know what went on in meetings nor with whom he might be allied. Great if he’d come here, might help us know him better and assess what this is about.
Persi – are you going to live blog the Aussie debate?
petedownunder @ 263
I’m not exactly “live”, it won’t be on here for a couple of hours. I can’t find anywhere streaming it. There’s a chatroom going at Lavartus Prodeo and I’m following that.
On a lighter note..
Tonight Wagner’s Die Walkurie was on the radio and I kicked it up full bore.
Shortly my 10 y/o kitty settled against the speaker and there he remained for the full 3 hours. When it ended he left the room. An opera buff kitty, who knew!
petedownunder @ 263
It’s not on here for an hour and a bit. I’m enjoying the chatroom at Lavartus Prodeo here
Can’t get a live feed Pete. What I’m reading in a chatroom here it looks good for Rudd.
Hi Pete, I won’t be seeing it for more than an hour. Can’t get a live feed to work.
Good morning!
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 151
Well, won’t have to worry about either…Elliot Smith is dead. In fact today is the 3rd anniversary of his suicide. A lot of Elliot’s repertoire was never “officially” released and is of poorer production quality.
But the reason you are hearing that Peyroux cover is because so many people love his songs and his Family have actually encouraged people to produce tribute albums. They take no posthumous royalties, I believe…and encourage that any equivalent profits be submitted to charities.
Good Morning! Great late night post egregious. You’re up early.
selise @ 257
Glad you liked my morning and evening posts, selise. It was a full day.
Good morning, pups. Today the Times served up MoDo, Friedman and Rich. MoDo has things to say about Hillary’s pollsters and advisors and Hillary and microtrends and… Mr. Friedman says if you want to go green it’s more important to change your leaders than to change your light bulbs (although you can do that in the interim before the election). Mr. Rich says that the suicide of Charles Riechers, the Air Force procurement officer, offers insight into the culture of the Iraq corruption scandals. The title of his column is “Suicide Is Not Painless.”

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got apple muffins with pecans that just came out of the oven. What a great day yesterday was at the lake. Egregious started us off with childhood memories (I had almost forgotten about Big John and Sparky…), and we had PAUL KRUGMAN at the Book Salon. I had to get some work done so I wasn’t there, but I’ve bookmarked that to read later. Have a great Sunday.
newtonusr @ 114
Our discussion of Whitehouse generated a lot of interest last night. In addition to the clip above, here’s his Thursday morning interview on Washington Journal, about a half hour.
Lot of people thought his telecom vote was incomprehensible, so I suggested we invite him here to the Lake to talk with us.
egregious @ 271
i did. very much. and besides that, thanks for pitching in while christy is gone… i hope you will have the chance and are willing to continue to front page post at least occasionally after christy gets back. you have a unique “voice” that adds a nice spice to the mix.
I live in GA and we are having a few water problems as I’m sure that you are aware of. Is it safe to use washing machine water for house plants? Some how the idea of dirty Tide water on my plants seems harmful.

Thanks JPL! Actually I’m always up this early. Strange for a former night owl. It’s a burst of optimism, I cannot wait to see what each new day will bring.
egregious @ 273
on friday, when i only knew of whitehouse’s vote for the bill (and not his vote against the ammendment to remove telco immunity – which is even worse!), i called his office for an explanation.
they didn’t have one, and my sense was that they found it as incomprehensible as i did.
sounds like whitehouse has some explaining to do (and not just to us)… starting with some of his own staff. hopefully there will be a public statement soon. and i plan to call his office again monday morning.
Marion, Thanks. Since the house is on the market I put out a few pansies and used bath water on them. I have a laundry room sink next to my washer and it would be easy for me to drain the water into a bucket.
JPL @ 275
just guessing here –
mild soap that is sufficiently diluted with water i would expect to be fine… after all, a diluted dishwashing liquid spray is used as a gentle insecticide.
but it might depend on what detergent you use. and i’d use the rinse water – not the wash water.
JPL, best of luck with the house sale. Me, I can’t imagine anything worse than moving! If you’re planning on staying in the Georgia drought area at your next place you might consider that rain barrel. I actually got a 60 gallon recycled olive barrel, all fitted out with a spigot and such…
smapdi @ 160
So much for free speech.
Have a good day pups. I’ll check in to read the great posts. A Realtor and a client are coming to see the house at noon so time to clean. Fingers crossed.

Already the wingnuts are howling that Operation Merlin backfired. But I think that it’s just a little bit bizarre that Operation Merlin was disclosed to James Risen in 2006…just as the evidence that Plame WAS an active covert agent working on Iranian non-proliferation was being disclosed.
And that leak wasn’t just of the raw program…it included the so-called Russian-Iranian exposure of the “flaws”.
Seems that the leak was intentional to me. Someone wanted to denigrate her activities. So who would have known about the Russian-Iranian link…or was that simply bogus spin. I suspect that if the CIA did this they would only have placed a “gimmick” in the system that could only have been detected at the field testing level.
The goal would be to screw up the test so that the trigger would detonate at a detectable level, while at the same time failing to initiate the chain reaction. Unfissioned nuclear material would be released after the test and a seismic signature. That would tell the US that the Irabnians had attempted a test but that the Merlin triggers had screwed it up. Since manufacturing weapons-grade uranium is such a time consuming process the Iranians would likely require another year to sufficiently build up for another test…and without an appropriate trigger.
If what I mention above sounds at all familiar…recall the mysterious nuclear test by the North Koreans that clearly didn’t produce a detonation of a substantial nuclear device…yet apparently did release unfissioned material into the atmosphere or ground water from the explosion.
Then suddenly, despite everyone concerned saying that North Korea was likely to undertake a second test “soon”…it never happened. WHY? I suspect it was because there was a successful Operation Merlin pulled by the CIA’s counterproliferation group that screwed up the triggers. And once everyone KNEW that North Korea was THAT close it led everyone, including Russia and China, to put great pressure on the North Koreans. The failed test triggered this increased pressure…while the North Koreans knew that they had “blown their wad” and they lacked operational triggers. A second test would have produced a similarly anemic outcome.
In addition, puzzle me this, if Iran had the imput of someone so adept at detecting disguised technological flaws of nuclear triggers to be able to them in the design…then why did they need the schematics in the first place. THAT individual could have designed the triggers for them!
And why would a Russian do this? Russia and it’s erstwhile Southern Republics are just as much threatened by a nuclear Iran as are the Persian Gulf regimes. He could have said…”yeah these are great” and collect his consultancy fee. But what if “Boris” didn’t actually detect the flaws, but was tasked to introduce his own flaw into the system. The way to do that would be to assert…”This won’t work…something is wrong here…and here is how you fix it.”
BUT if someone in the Bush Administration leaked the information to Risen last year to undercut Plame’s credibility…and there actually was NO Soviet Scientist (Boris) that blew the operation…then that leak sacrificed a still viable program that could have seriously impeded the Iranians using these for weapons. It also undercut the CIA/NSA’s ability to monitor WHEN the Iranians reached the point where they had enough fissionable material to test a weapon. The Iranians certainly won’t use those triggers and seek out others. Such a leak would be treasonable… just like the original Plame exposure… and set back our defenses from rogue states and terrorists obtaining these weapons by decades.
selise @ 283
Stop using Tide and switch to a milder and perfume and dye free type of detergent(there are several on the market). What cleans your clothes more than the detergent or water temp is the agitation of the washer itself.
You can also use your dishwater(again, same detergent rules apply) and left over cooking water(from pasta, etc)for plants.
