Harry Reid himself took $22,000 in contributions from AT&T between 2001-2006. OpenSecrets reports that he also owns between $15,001 and $50,000 worth of stock in Dow Jones U.S. Telecommunications Sector Index Fund, the largest holdings of which are AT&T and Verizon.
I guess Emmett Till just didn't have that kind of clout.
Senators Clinton and Obama, what say you?

hi jane!
I get the fitzuno!
while it’s not surprising just disapointing they can buy our law, what is just amazing to me is how little they pay for whatever law they need
20,000 dollars to forgive any crimes they committed, that is just incredible
Hello, Jane!
Emmett Till: God rest his soul…
disgusting
perris @ 1
I believe it was revdeb that coined the perfect expression;
“chump change”
oh, double entendre supreme
Jane!!!
The truth, at last. It doesn’t matter if they have a (D) or an (R) after their name.
The truth. Excellent.
Biodun @ 3
Amen.
Jay Rockefeller. The best AT&T employee we have in congress?
And why the f* would Reid let Coburn walk away on such a crystal clear murder of a 15 yearold. The morality of our leadership is stunning doggydo.
“Disgusted” doesn’t begin to cover this.
They’ll probably have nothing to say.
paul krugman is completely on topic today:
Dodd has made a bold move and has distinguished himself from the rest of the pack, especially among progressives.
Hillary, are you ready to lead?
Countdown #4 last night:
(I’ll post some more interesting stuff from Countdown last night when the transcript goes up shortly.)
I mean really what does Coburn have to hide (and his enabler Reid)?
Biodun @ 14
Will KO cover Dodd. He should.
The thing that kills me is how cheaply politicians can be bought off. $25,000? That’s a paltry sum. Hell, individuals could come up with that kind of money, maybe we should buy our own politicians. And then run ads saying, “I bought Representative X for Y thousand dollars so he’ll vote the way I want him to.”
Lest we forget, & for many who might not know. Welcome to Money, Mississippi 1955-
“Emmett Louis “Bobo” Till (July 25, 1941 – August 28, 1955) was a fourteen year old African-American boy from Chicago, Illinois brutally murdered in Money, Mississippi, a small town in the state’s Delta region. His murder has been cited as one of the key events that energized the nascent American Civil Rights Movement. The main suspects were acquitted, but later admitted to committing the crime.
Till’s mother insisted on a public funeral service with an open casket to let everyone see how he had been brutally killed. He had been shot, beaten and had his eye gouged out before he was then thrown into the Tallahatchie River with a 75-pound cotton gin fan tied to his neck as a weight with barbed wire. His body stayed in the river for three days until it was discovered and retrieved by two fishermen.
Till’s body resides in Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois. The murder case was officially reopened in May 2004, and as a part of the investigation the body was exhumed so an autopsy could be performed. The body was reburied by the family in the same location later that week.”

Right on, Jane! And see what Krugman wrote today, it fits exactly his ideas http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10.....gin”
mui @ 16
I think he will. I know he reads FDL every day.
Biodun @ 20
Get out! Keith does?
Biodun @ 20
you know for a fact? or you have reason to believe?
EPU-ed from last thread:
Give Harry Hell…and the rest of ‘em as well.
And thanks for the luv in the last thread, lhp & co, from this frazzled-busy flyin’ by upstart Constitutional Democrat.
It’s not as if Rockefeller needs the money, either.
Geez, $20,000 to save the telcos billions in judgements. This is why your money goes further in politics than anywhere else. You can donate to charity, but whatever good your charity money does winds up being undone by some politician in the pay of some corporation.
If Gates and Buffett really wanted to do good, they would have given $2 billion of their $32 billion charity donation to the DNC — not the DSCC or the DCCC, they’re far too corrupted by corporate yobbos — so Howard Dean could give us the very candidates the Beltway jerks are afraid he’ll give us: Actual progressive Democrats. The other $30 billion should have gone towards buying/starting a TV network and a journalism service (or just have all of the $30 billion go to Pro Publica).
Biodun @ 3
Seconded.
Harry is selling us out cheap.
FWIW, I’ve already called Reid’s office this morning to complain and spent a minute on hold. I did not give the young woman who answered an opportunity to go into the talking points, I just gave my spiel, including asking why he is not supporting a senior member of his own party in this. I questioned if the TelCos and President have blackmail on the Senator.
I have also called Senator Durbin’s office to send the message through the Senate Majority Whip that this is not an appropriate action and questioning why Democrats are carrying the water for the Republicans on these issues.
I won’t hold my breath on success but will try to do my part nevertheless.
mui @ 21
Hi Keith! (waving)
mui @ 21
Keith is a journalist. A journalist who has shown himself to be interested in the truth rather than just “He said, she said”. Firedoglake is an informative blog. Why wouldn’t he read it daily or nearly daily?
Astral Technician @ 13
*crickets*
selise @ 22
Not Biodun, but very often Countdown’s first few stories appear to be in sync with FDL. I don’t have any evidence other than a gut feel.
perris @ 1
epiphany;
it’s just a down payment, he has to deliver to get the rest, then they’ll thow gobs more at him and treat him like king
Boo Radley @ 26
The next thing you know, we’ll hear they threw in a frozen turkey.
I don’t know what’s worse - blatantly and transparently caving to a major contributor or being a little more discreet about caving to the wishes of a major contributor. Either way, it’s disgusting.
Public financing of elections NOW!
Verizon owns Congress.
I wish it were shocking.
And I wonder what all those busboys in chinatown are buying from Hillary. Sigh.
Reid’s capitulation to the telecoms is infuriating. Who the hell does he think put him in power to be Senate majority leader? It sure wasn’t the telecoms irregardless of whatever chump change they threw at him.
This is an outrage.
Time to hit the phones…
Biodun @ 11
At least until they have it polled and focus grouped. Then they’ll go with the big money.
The Mommy Party and the (Deadbeat) Daddy Party. From Countdown last night:
My bold.
perris @ 1
Why Perris, are you forgetting how much criminal prosecution for giving away their customers personal information could affect their stock prices? And how much that would affect a number of Senators personal finances?
Boo Radley @ 31
not that i think KO doesn’t read FDL - but a statement that one knows he does is very different than a statement that there is reason to beleive he does.
Good work as always Jane!!
You guys are grossly underestimating the real money flowing into the personal finances of our congress members.
$165,000 a year may seem like a lot. But it’s definitely not. A nice condo in DC area and basic living expenses eats up most of that. By the time you pay for the family back home to have a tiny ranch house, you’re tapped out.
But funny thing is, members of congress have a lifestyle more consistent with making $400k-$500k a year.
Hmm. Yup. There you go. Dirty politicians always represent the money interests. Doesn’t matter what letter you put after their name.
mui @ 21
I’ve been told he does by a friend on his staff. Plus: If you watch his show every day, he picks up stuff from FDL thread memes the day before (and en on the same day) from time to time. (I’m serious.)
There is a dkos diary suggesting that we ask Senator’s to give back telcom money and renounce it in the future if they vote to support immunity….they should avoid even the appearance of impropriety.
Not into blog whoring so go over and search the the obvious key words if you are interested.
Even if we can turn Ried around, we still need a coalition of 41 senators to sustain the hold. And IMHO the best way to turn Ried around is to appear to be able to assemble such a coalition. It’ll take some serious outrage from the electorate and a portion of the press to herd such a coalition together.
Biodun @ 11
Are you implying that they won’t weigh in because they’re not really leaders? Actually, I think Obama did weigh in–he’s against immunity for telecoms. Don’t know what he’s willing to do about it, though.
selise @ 41
I have some sorta feeling too. Itd be cool if he said hello. Others have.
Me @ 44:
Biodun @ 44
it does look at times like he has created a montage of firedog posters…it’s nice to see too
Prairie Sunshine @ 23
Would a boycott of Vegas be in order if Reid does this?
JH
I truly hope that KO does read this blog. Just in case he doesn’t, I am going to spotlight the previous post to whatever contact he has listed. The constitutional democrat meme is something he could catapult into the mainstream.
So what does Harry open with on the Senate floor?
The letter to Limbaugh.
Too bad there’s no real business to attend to.
shit
I’d rather hear that Harry Reid reads FDL.
damn peets’ coffee.
after drinking a whole pot of coffee this morning (more than usual for me,) i have a wicked headache and no pleasant caffeine buzz.
just checked the brand new pound bag of coffee from peets mail order. yup - they send the wrong coffee… it’s decafe.
so if i’m even more grumpy than usual this morning, i blame peets.
Per Atrios:
Boo Radley @ 31
My bold. Absolutely. (See my 44.)
jayt @ 54
He needs it.
I used to be puzzled by how little cash it takes to bribe a Congressman until I realized it was about prospective future sinecures, and the sinecures of your colleague. Well, at least Dodd has a permanent invitation to post at FDL.
Biodun @ 57
it can definately be attributed to coinicidence though, we are always cutting edge on topic and any time anyone in politics is cutting edge on topic they are going to be in sync with the firedog lake
Song for Harry Reid in honour of progressive dems. (All of a sudden I’m addicted to cheese disco).
selise @ 41
There is enough correlation of topics that he’d be foolish not to have one of his staff scan FDL on a daily basis for perspective, phrases, terminology, and ideas in general.
I thought the long-established “comity” of the Senate was to respect the ‘hold’ and not bring it to a vote. Reid, I understand, is thumbing his nose at precedent, understanding, and ‘comity’ by challenging Dodd’s hold while certifying everybody elses (read: Republicans)
Biodun @ 57
thanks, i missed your 44 (my bad). that is sooo cool!
jayt @ 54
When I called Dodd’s campaign to thank them and tell them about my contribution the ebullient staffer I spoke to was unfamiliar with FDL, too, when I mentioned that the site was my information source.
selise @ 55
Oh for Peet’s sake! ;o)
BTW: Keith Olbermann is a very bright guy who absorbs vast amounts of information very fast, in case anyone hasn’t noticed…*g*
He doen’t let anything, I mean anything, slip through. His frequent exchanges with Rachel Maddow are quite fascinating.
Kitt @ 66
Peat coffee? That sounds like something they drank during the civil war.
Selise,
sometimes when I am out of coffee, I go for green tea, regular tea. I don’t have pop around but tea takes care of the withdrawal from caffeine…which is killer for the likes of me.
brendan @ 64
I think moveon has a pol too.
Biodun @ 67
Yep. They appear to have exactly the same threshold for outrage.
my bold
Breaking at TPM: Dodd will filibuster…
http://tpmelectioncentral.com/.....o_vote.php
Ann in AZ @ 47
It’s a quaint patrician notion we absorbed in civics class that we’re supposed to expect “leadership” from Congressmen. What I want are followers…who follow us.
wigwam @ 62
Yeah once he made snarking reference to the “progressive war on X-mas”. I didn’t think that some of the jokes surrounding that were common knowledge.
Plots! Data!
Jane, you’re the best :)
Dodd threatens filibuster!!!
Plus:
I’m assuming you all know that Keith knows Jane Hamsher personally? She appeared on Countdown last year I think. I’ll dig up a video of that.
jello5929 @ 43
And payoffs are now called “honorariums.” (Or is it “honoraria”?) Why shouldn’t a well-heeled pseudo academic institution like AEI pay an invited speaker a substantial honorarium?
Biodun @ 67
I really enjoy her articulateness and her happy crooked smirk.
OT: but important.
pete stark’s office needs calls of support:

no apology pete!!!!

brendan @ 65
Mmm. That was true of some of the younger stafff working for the Lamont campaign. Some hadn’t heard of my left nutmeg, even though the site owner was around. They all heard of Daily Kos.
Katie Jensen @ 69
luckily i have a bit of espresso in the house. good suggestion though, thx.
puppethead @ 17
That’s been tried. From an E.J. Montini column in the Phoenix Republic of Dec. 27, 2005 comes a quote from the notorious Charles Keating:
mc @ 72
Good I hope we can count on Kerry, Kennedy et al.
The contributions to Reid and Rockefeller are no different than bribes. I have had enough of this kind of government.
1,632 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Hamsher and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Bless your beautiful heart and amazin’ mind, sister Hamsher, to contrast Emmett Till with the telecoms actions shakes my soul…you get the Norske “Flamethrower” award for today.
But more’n that, I think the work that FDL and all the other progressive blogs have been doin’ these last few years and the space you folks have created to project the people’s voice to power is payin’ off in actions taken by elected officials in BOTH houses of Congress these last couple a days. The progressives are willin’ to take on the compromised Democratic leadership and Mrs. Clinton must be shittin’ bricks right now….AL GORE COME ON IN WE GOT THE WATER NICE AND WARM FOR YA!
KEEP THE FAITH, THE BEST CURE FOR SUFFERING DEMOCRACY IS MORE DEMOCRACY!!!
Wow. I didn’t realize that Chris Dodd was behind the pro-Emmitt Till legislation.
Dodd is a mensch.
These Senators/Congress people are on the take and JUSTIFY it by saying what Hillary Clinton said:
LOBBYIST REPRESENT THE PEOPLE.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=1LY0AqYXZC4
She’s not alone in Congress. Ask Reid and F(ranken)einstein.
mui @ 84
Kennedy just had surgery and will return next week; his office said no statement until then.
Kerry has no statement yet but they are counting calls (hint, hint)
Watch Jane Hamsher on Countdown here.

hey prof foland!
last couple of weeks i’ve been singing representative holt’s praises for his work on fisa in the house… (see this youtube)
just found he was a physicist before becoming a member of congress.
also a five time winner on “jeopardy”
Dodd will filibuster the telecom immunity bill if it’s brought to a vote.
jello5929 @ 43
I think this is right. After all, that $22,000 to Reid wasn’t even to him directly; it was to his campaign. Why would it influence him?
The campaign contributions must be like chits or markers. Everything that comes after holding office is important, and the peer pressure Reid and Rockefeller must feel not to fuck it up for their colleagues is also probably a factor.
Maybe Firedoglake wants to take a look at The Glover Park Group, and ad agency on K Street run by Joe Lockhart and Carter Eskew among others. These are “Good Democrats” who guide companies like Verizon through the advertising/lobbying process. If Lockhart and Eskew are in bed with the Verizons you better understand the Democrats complictiy in the big business abuses. This is not Republican vs. Democrat. This is a corrupted system where Republicans and Democrats take good care, even show the way, for the hand of big business that feeds them. Convictions and political beliefs be damned.
Great job following the money, Jane.
Jay, Harry.
For Chrissakes, give the goddam money back.
biff diggerence @ 97
Absolutely!!! I LOVE THIS BLOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
perris @ 92
Those lessons learned @ daddy’s (& mama’s) knee…
Thomas Dodd would be proud.
Got to finally drive in to work. Read you all later.
Jane’s upstairs again…
On Dodd’s possible filibuster.
I tried to call the Reid’s office on my lunch break but just got put on hold in the time I had. I have to commend the Senator though - the small, tinny sound of classical music through a phone is a perfect choice to represent the man.
Sanders just said on AAR that he will support Dodd in fighting the FISA immunity.
That’s one more.
$20,000?
Jeeze, if I’d known it costs that little to buy a congresscritter, I’d have taken out a loan and bought my own. Right now, it’d be a better investment than real estate!
Go, Dodd!
Go, Pete Stark!
Speaking of getting what you pay for, I wonder how much Chris Dodd raised in campaign contributions yesterday afternoon. If it was over $ 22,000, I think that number should be written across the mirrors in the Senate members only bathrooms. Maybe, just maybe, our fair representatives will realize that if they promote the people’s will, they will be rewarded.
dan_ps @ 101
I would think the small, tinny sound of Donnie and Marie would be more it.
Folks, while we’re busy hammering Senator Harry Reid for selling out to the Telcos, let us not forget that he is in many ways a “figure-head” for other behind-the-scene Democratic rollovers, including the oily Senator “Chuckles the Clown” Schumer.
Lady Bug @ 104
I don’t think that’s really it (see @95). It’s life as a lobbyist that counts to these people.
Money has ruined america.
STOP WITH THE MONEY.
Mad Dogs @ 106
oily….LMBLOATEDAO!!!!!!!
The thing that surprises me is how CHEAP it is to buy a member of the congress of the US. Cheap. Worth every penny for these corporations, I’m sure.
I guess anything over 30 pieces of silver will do.
Filibuster! I think I’ll go over to Dodd’s place and drop a buck or two in.
itwasntme @ 110
You mean if we pool together $23,000 we would be able to bring Harry Reid back from the dark side?
