I was lucky to have worked with Billy in the studio several times. Great balls of fire, what a musician. He freaked out really seasoned studio players, he was that good. And a nice man, too.

It’s late here and I am just about to go to bed. As far as music goes, I actually studied it in college and now the only music I make an effort to listen to is my own. I know, kind of sad. But there is of course so much that I like and also so much I consider to be anti-art. And my tastes run from Beethoven to Hank Williams to Ornette Coleman. (by the way, in case you didn’t know, Miles Davis is a god)

Concerning my music, I’m reminded of what Floyd the bass player with Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem (on the Muppet Show) said to Kermit when he told Kermit he wanted to write a new theme song for the show:

“You won’t like it.” Floyd said. “If I didn’t know I was a genius, I wouldn’t like it.”

Great line, even better article, titled The Well-Tempered Web. The NYer is starting to give more HTML links in their articles, and Ross’s compendium of classical music resources on the web, is worth bookmarking for those alone.

These are the arguments that oilfieldguy’s poster presented:

* So, it is better to die, if you are gonna die anyway, in Iraq…than in Arkansas, but dying in Iraq is okay…it is better. This guy is saying, you are gonna die anyway, and dying in war is somehow…what…a better..experience. If you are dead, you are dead. Dead is not okay!!!!!!! What part of that don’t these people understand? Death by war is never okay, it is never alright, it is never deserved, or undeserved. How can you define a justification for death, when no one, has ever survived death to tell you whether it is justified? How insane is that? This is what people think. This is how people live their lives…it is insanity.

The “winch” is below the back window–we call it a yo-yo. Note in the picture their is no cable (we call it twine) on the yo-yo.

My “twine” is one-inch cable with 108,000lbs breaking strength. It is used to drag stuff up onto the trailer. If the load is real heavy, I double my twine.

Right now I have a 116,000 lb gas compressor on my trailer. I have 38 tires on the ground.

“Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe’s Flash Player.” still comes up with all these newer “Beta” youtubes:
javascript IS enabled; i have uninstalled flash per adobe instructions and re-installed freshly downloaded flash.

many times.

yet my XP Pro sp2 machine will not play them in either Firefox2.0.0.7 nor the latest IE.

Whereas the same videos play fine on my iMac, in Both Firefox and Safari.

iMac and dell both feed from the same router.

These are the arguments that oilfieldguy’s poster presented:

* So, it is better to die, if you are gonna die anyway, in Iraq…than in Arkansas, but dying in Iraq is okay…it is better.

And if the claim was true (which it isn’t – ven for the raw numbers) then why are we paying these soldiers in Iraq all these bonuses for combat tours? If they were simple at the smae risk as if they stayed at home then the shouldn’t deserve higher pay…or be treated as heros any more than the guys sitting in Korea or Arkansas.

BTW the rates of accidental death are much higher in Iraq because of the efforts used to avoid attacks (driving fast, or simply having so many “live weapons” and munitions around).

In addition, the raw numbers are irrelevant. There are millions of US Dept. of Defense employees based in the US while there are only about 170,000 in Iraq. To calculate the RATE of accidental deaths in both areas one has to scale it to the sample population.

This is the same sort of bulldada that they try to use when they claim that the fatalities are less than what police face in a major American city…and that total Iraq deaths are no worse than Philadelphia.
