Christy is taking a much-deserved birthday vacation today, but I think I know her well enough by this point to know that she won’t be able to keep herself from peeking in on the blog (I think she’s already made a couple of comments).
So anything anyone might want to say…or, you know, sing to her…will probably get read.
Happy birthday, Christy. We love you.
And to Siun too.
I hope sharing a birthday post isn’t like having your birthday on Christmas or something.

I’m so excited I can’t type.
Many happy returns of the day, and may today’s celebration count as one for the ages-even the parts you don’t dare tell in mixed company…
For Christy and Siun, an amazing chocolate cake.
Combine 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, cubed, 7 Oz. unsweetened chocolate, 3 oz bittersweet chocolate (both chopped), 2 cups very strong coffee, and melt slowly over hot water in a double boiler, stirring. Put 3 cups sugar in a mixing bowl, pour the chocolate over it, stir until sugar dissolves, let cool for a few minutes. Add 5 oz Kahlua, 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, 3 large eggs already beaten. Blend well. Sift 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup regular cake flour, 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt, then add to batter in halves. Beat for one minute on medium mixer speed. Prepare a 10″ springform pan by buttering and lining the bottom with buttered parchment paper. Put the pan on a baking sheet, pour batter in, and put in the middle of a preheated 325 degree oven for 1 3/4 to 2 hours, rotating the pan occasionally. It is done when a toothpick comes out clean from the middle. Let cool on a rack. Glaze with chocolate glaze and optional chocolate coffee beans.

I am only listening to Brooks and Shields on the NewsHour with half an ear. So far Brooks has said that the country has turned the page on George Bush and that Bush still has a lot of power, and that while a corner has not been turned in Iraq, a corner has been turned in Iraq. Shields comes up with a goofy scenario whereby troop reductions in Iraq next year will eliminate Iraq as a political albatross for the Republicans. How much you want to bet that there will be 100,000 troops in Iraq in November 2008? Shields really needs to have his meds changed.
Anyway both liked Mukasey. Shields expressed surprise that Mukasey wouldn’t come out and condemn waterboarding. He stole my line that his main selling point is is that he is not Alberto Gonzales. Brooks salivated over Mukasey as a conservative in the Bush mold. Yes, that has worked out so well, hasn’t it?
Geez, I wish that the NewsHour would get a couple of analysts who could actually analyze something.
