selise @ 281

thanks for the good advice. i live on the top of a hill and the basement isn’t very damp - except occassionaly in the summer (condensation?). i do have a dehumidifier, but i don’t usually run it.

there are some shelves in a rough room that i think the previous owner’s kid used…. empty shelves are a tempation when i’ve got piles of books upstairs that don’t have a place on one of already filled bookcases.

never heard of space bags. will have to use the google. thanks!

Chance to talk up space bags, which saved us 1000s when we had a clothing moth infestation.

Learned this on a museum textile conservators’ chat site, and don’t have the ref. handy. works for anything but furs.Insert a chemical heat back–the kind sold for back pain, hot side toward the clothes. vacuum out the air as one does normally. The heat will scavenge out the air that remains in the creases of the bag, and kill the bugs quickly.
space bags are better purchased on line in groups than at a local bed/bath type place. cheaper.

and while on this OT topic. putting moth ridden clothes in any freezer except a sub zero or old-fashioned chest freezer does not save the clothes, because in normal fridge freezers, temperature varies and the buggers (actually the larvae) adjust to the difference.
One can also use dry ice. Check out the UC Irvine agri station web site. they explain how.
But it’s a production. Space bag heat. zaps them in a half hour.
and you gain closet space.
sorry for going on and on. Bye pups.

yeah. trying to figure out where i can put an new bookcase… or do i risk the basement?

yes, but not without a dehumidifier. A pump and raising shelves on supports will also protect from the catastrophic except for Katrina-type catastrophes, ‘though I do suggest a. sniff test to find the least damp part of the basement, and b. start by putting the paperbacks down stairs and let the more expensive books follow after you are sure the books are not harmed or smelly.

I am told one can always put books and papers in the basement in spacebags. Apparently bagged stuff survived Katrina.

Murray Waas has a piece at HuffPo about Abu. I haven’t read it yet, I’m just so relieved he’s alive and well. Haven’t seen anything by him since that hit-piece was done on him. And since we live in such scary times, I was worried.

Books in a basement can also be damaged if your hot water heater leaks, which is pretty common. My sister lost a lot of books and papers this way.
