I love Margaret Cho.

UPDATE: And while we’re on the topic of religion, Ed*ard Teller in the comments alerts us to the fact that Ann Coulter is still frantically digging for relevance.
To which I can only respond by quoting Billie Holiday:
“I’ve always been a religious bitch, but if that evil motherfucker believes in God, I’m thinking it over.”

Quarter-size radioactive material halts Pasadena traffic
from HoustonChronicle http://feeds.chron.com/~r/hous…..26792.html
Rush hour traffic in Pasadena ground to a halt Thursday afternoon while U.S. Army civil support teams searched three to five miles of Highway 225 for a quarter-sized piece of radioactive material that fell off the back of a truck.

US legislators demand Bush apology for sending Canadian to jail in Syria for a year.
NEWS AMERICAS
Apology call for ‘rendered’ victim
Arar said he still feels emotionally distant from his wife and children after his year in jail [GALLO/GETTY]
US legislators have called for the president to apologise to a Syrian-born Canadian who was imprisoned and tortured after being deported by US officials to Damascus.
Maher Arar was arrested on a stopover in New York in 2002 on his way home from a holiday and deported to Syria where he says he was tortured during the year he spent in jail.
The software engineer is still barred from entering the US despite being cleared by the Canadian government last year of any links with terror groups following an official inquiry.
Ottawa apologised and paid him compensation of $10.8m in January.
On Thursday Democratic and Republican legislators apologised to Arar and said George Bush, the US president, should follow Canada’s lead, admit the mistake and say sorry to the Canadian.

Instapundit attacks journalists’ patriotism.
from Think Progress by Matt
Responding to an op-ed by Wall Street Journal deputy editor Daniel Henniger today about media coverage of Iraq, Glenn “Instapundit” Reynolds lobbed an ad hominem attack on the patriotism of America’s “political and journalistic classes,” saying they “lack sufficient patriotism“:
The problem is that our political and journalistic classes lack sufficient patriotism to promote self-discipline, or perhaps sufficient self-discipline to allow them to act patriotically.
Since 2003, 160 media workers have been killed in Iraq, including two Americans and 48 who were working for international news organizations.

Spinelessness on the alleged left is not unique to the US. The Australian Labor Party (think Democrats with funny accents)in Queensland has introduced legislation to do away with the 800 year old bar against double jeopardy (being tried twice for the same crime). In the US this would require repeal of the 5th Amendment: “nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb”

Hey, Ladies, ‘Real Women Stay Married’… Or so Susan Orr claims…
– Orr authored a paper in 2000 titled, “Real Women Stay Married.” In it she wrote that women should “think about focusing our eyes, not upon ourselves, but upon the families we form through marriage.”

11/3 works for me.
Suzanne – I like the wish upon a star one too.

LS @ 34
Actually Medved brought her on so that she could stop the controversy…and the Coulter stepped right back into it by asserting that Jews “believe Jesus was a raving maniac”. He then cut away from the conversation so they could talk “off-air”. When they came back on he completely ignored this outrageous statement.
And then he got her to essentially revise her original statement…and said that she was misquoted. To paraphrase “Ann, you didn’t actually say that all Jews SHOULD convert to Christianity, you simply said that Christians would LIKE Jews to convert.”
But that’s NOT what she said, at all!
Here’s the original statements on THAT topic.
“DEUTSCH: Christian — so we SHOULD be Christian? It would be better if we were all Christian?
COULTER: Yes.
DEUTSCH: We SHOULD all be Christian?
COULTER: Yes. Would you like to come to church with me, Donny?”
And Jews need to be “perfected” by becoming Christians?
And she asserted that Christians believe that Jews will go to Heaven?
Except that’s not what the Pope, the religious fundamentalists, and even the mainstream religious leadership says. And I doubt if Coulter does either.
Last I heard that was ONLY if they converted…their interpretation of John 3:16 (which has essentially become a substitute for actually reading the words of Jesus) constantly prate on this position: “No one can go to heaven without accepting Jesus as their savior.” Many Christians say that this verse has to be stated before one can be Christian. It’s the GOLD STANDARD.
The Jews who go to Heaven are the 144,000 male virgins that convert at the time of the Apocalypse!

Two new reports from McClatchy about the screwups about the vast, Vatican-sized US Embassy in Iraq.
The first shows that the Pentagon rejected the first and only bid made originally because it came in at twice the price.
Then “The State Department’s Bureau of Overseas Building Operations (OBO) then waived a law that requires open and competitive bidding. It awarded a sole-source contract for the unclassified portions of the new embassy complex to a Kuwait -based firm, First Kuwaiti General Trading & Contracting Co.”

Every now and then it comes up for debate. The argument against says a Bill of Rights could actually end up limiting rights by failing to include them. I say that clever Constitutional lawyers could overcome that with a well-crafted bill. Although, whatever legislated rights a person has can always be ignored or undermined by a tyrant, a la Bush.
kirk murphy @ 176
I think it’s pretty clear from Cho’s comments that she was referring to a particular group of Christians, not to Christians as a whole. in fact, she pretty clearly didn’t think they were very good at being Christian.

And here is another McClatchy report from Iraq that shows that things are not only falling apart in the South, but that Diyala and Baquba are not the bed of roses that General Petraeus implied in his Congressional testimony. In fact US Officials and Reconstruction teams can’t even travel to much of Iraq, a situation WORSE than a year ago!
http://news.yahoo.com/s/mcclat…..n1UyNAXYh4
“The report, released Thursday by the Office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction , said that poor security prevents U.S. and coalition civilian officials from meeting with many of their Iraqi counterparts, yet Iranians can travel unmolested in the region.”
Some of the main points (paraphased)
…Iranian influence and money is pouring into Najaf and Karbala provinces, the home of Iraq’s Shiite religious leaders. But coalition reconstruction experts have been unable to visit Najaf in over a year Only three visits have been made to Karbala in the past year.
…In Basra province, a British reconstruction experts had to flee offices last November after repeated rocket and mortar attack…Minority groups, including Sunnis and Christians, have largely been driven away from Basra, which “prior to the war” was “a pluralistic, socially diverse city.”
…Coalition reconstruction teams, including the Army Corps of Engineers, can’t travel to Maysan province- now controlled by the Mahdi Army militia of Moqtada al Sadr.
… Overland travel is rare in other provinces. The securit is so bad an early draft recommended the U.S. shut down reconstruction for Basra, Karbala, Najaf, Qadisiyah and Maysan provinces and reassign the staff. The recommendation was dropped when the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. military objected.
…Progress was mixed in Baghdad and Diyala provinces. “Every member of the PRT teams has encountered hostile direct fire” in Diyala, whose provincial capital, Baqouba , was the focus of a massive U.S. “surge” offensive this summer.
“Despite gains by U.S. and Iraqi security forces in tamping down violence in some sections in and around Baghdad and Baquba, PRT officials are generally pessimistic that lasting political reconciliation was taking place,” the report said.

Didn’t Shrub just praise Betrayus for his astute observations, today???
CTuttle @ 174
Which island are you on? The Mexican food here is just dreadful, we’re too far from Mexico and I’ve yet to meet a Mexican. I love HI, but when there I tend to eat the local HI junk food which seems to have its roots in the Phillipines, Japan and indigenous Hawaiian.
Cujo359 @ 175
Well they DID…and then when they only got one bid, at twice the amount that they had presented in their bid announcement, and the contractor said that it would take twice as long to build what they insisted, they turned it down and gave it to this Kuwaiti company. But the waiver to allow a non-competive bid was only AFTER they took competitive bid offerings and turned away the offer of the bidder that “won”.
burnspbesq @ 192
Nite, Burns!!!
cinnamonape @ 189
I guess that light isn’t the end of the tunnel …
BTW, “direct fire” usually means gunshots or the like – generally that means these PRT folks were within a few hundred yards of whoever was shooting at them. It wasn’t rockets or artillery from miles away.
That settles it. I’m opening a Mexican restaurant in Australia when I retire. You people are missing out!
I remember that when I was a kid living in Minnesota, we had to get tortillas in a CAN. Imagine such fuckery!
petedownunder @ 197
Sure you’ve met Mexicans, they’re the people who live south of the NSW border.

You get what you pay for …
petedownunder @ 197
Heh, pretty good analysis, I prefer artery clogging, than junk… The Big Isle, Hilo, specifically…!!!
Loo Hoo. @ 201
The problem is partly getting ingredients. We can get tortillas that are not tinned, but they are pretty crappy. Likewise sauces I can buy in CA I’d have to make from scratch here and I don’t have the time or expertise.
On the other hand, if you like bananas, this is the place…
Cujo359 @ 200
Definitely not, ‘indirect’ fire, that’s the verbiage we military folks call mortars and such…!!!
persiflage @ 202
Those are cockies….
What are cockies?
CTuttle @ 204
The Big Island is great, and Hilo has (or had the last time I was there) a nice old time feel to it, but the weather is bit wet for my taste. I used to stay on the Kona side just inland and up in the hills a bit. There’s a great snorkel spot at a Marine Park up the coast north of there, the name escapes me but they had a replica Hawaiian village set up. Very cool.
Loo Hoo. @ 201
There are few Mexicans in Australia. We have lots of people from Chile in my town, refugees from the Pinochet era but they seem to prefer making lovely music than making my dinner. I’ll be there for the opening of your restaurant with an appetite and a bib.
Loo Hoo. @ 208

Isn’t Cho reffering to some SUBset of Christians when she refers to “these groups”. If she wasn’t she’d say “Christians have lost their minds”..not “These Christian groups…”
If certain Christian groups (say Focus on The Family, or the Christian Coalition) say something outrageous are we NOT supposed to take them to task…especially when they wrap themselves in Christian doctrine (or their “lost their minds” interpretation of it).
Cho mentioned that some Christian groups were calling on certain things….”have they lost their minds”. That isn’t an aspersion at all on those other Christian Groups that DON’T advocate those things. In fact it’s praise for those that resist those things. They “haven’t lost their minds”. After all, to lose one’s mind means that you were at one time sane. So presumably some Christian groups are still sane.
If you are speaking about something that Al Qaida and Jemaah Islamiyah do and then say “These Islamic groups are insane” does that mean ALL Muslims are insane. NO! It means THESE groups are insane. THESE is particular and specific….you would say “ALL” if you want to say “ALL Islamic groups are insane.”
Wow! An interview with Carol Lam who now works for Qualcomm.
petedownunder @ 207
I was referring to Victorians! Growing up in NSW we always called Mexicans because they lived south of the border..
petedownunder @ 209
Whoo, ya nailed it, Kailua-Kona is certainly the dry side, however, Hilo is losing it’s notoriety as the City where the Rain, Reigns…!!! Damn, global warming, we’re barely at half our yearly totals…!!! 8-(
Suzanne & Fellow Firepups-Apologies for crossing the line in the previous thread regarding Mr. Rove. In the interest of higher discourse I will keep my more base opinions of what would consitute justice for him and his ilk to myself.
petedownunder @ 211
I think it’s only the NSW Rugby League State of Origin Team. As I recall, we called the Queenslanders banana-benders. Their clever retort was something to do with all the cockroaches in Sydney. Rather than splutter the NSW team grabbed the name and adopted it. But that was a long time ago, in galaxy far, far away, and I might have misremembered.
CTuttle @ 216
It must be just parched at 150 inches a year.
As much as I’m pissed at the Repugs over SChip, I’m not too thrilled with Rahm’s and Steny’s pleas on the floor today, it’s re-airing now on C-span!!! What sorry dweebs…!!!
OK, I was wrong. People in NSW referred to the Queensland team as “the cane toads”. Queensland countered by calling the NSW team “cockroaches”. And that’s the way it’s stayed.
petedownunder @ 219
We’ve averaged 200-210″ a year, the last two, we’ve had less than 90″…!!!
I shall bid ya’ll a fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!!
CTuttle @ 222
I shouldn’t joke about it, but SE Queensland is in a severe drought so 90 inches looks like Noah’s flood. Our reservoirs are under 20% and we’re at stage 6 water restrictions (4 minute showers, don’t even think about watering the garden).
CTuttle @ 222
So what do you think of my annual 9 inches here in the?
The Future Mrs Downunder just rang so gotta go pick her up from work (some one got too many speeding tickets, but we won’t name names). Afternoon Persi, g’night CT.

Hmmm . . . blackened calamari. I like that. Never did it.
Used to take BIG ole honkin calamari. Pull the head and tenactles out. Peel off the skin, reach in the tube and pull the guts, and such. Look for that long cuttle bone, pull that out.
Cut the tube in half. Pound the FUCK (slur du jour, I get bonus points, right?) out of it and then soak it in any NUMBER of things.
Milk.
Citrus juices.
Vinegars.
Use it as a ceviche based marinated calamari dish with assorted peppers either italian style or asian style.
Use it to pan fry . . . any NUMBER of ways (flour/egg wash, flour, egg, seasoned bread crumbs, seasoned flour only).
Lemon butter sauce (buerre blanc) with capers.
Tomato concasee with capers and EVOO/Balsamic and basil chiffonade.
Done right, it could sell like abalone, and at half the price with a HUGE markup in the early to mid 80’s.
Calamari is greatly under rated . . . but the deep fry thing with an aioli is SO old school . . . might as well be serving prime rib, yorkshire’s (I LOVE yorkshire pudding), and tournado’s . . . ;-)
Black pan blackened calamari steaks is a HELL of an idea. Cut it up and serve it with warm white corn doubled up taco’s and all the trimmings . . . ummmmmm . . . . dos mas, por favor!!!!!! *G*
Bye Pete, see ya later…
Good night, CTuttle, and goodbye Pete. We have absolutely no idea who got too many speeding tickets! We’re looking at a 30% cut back in water here in Southern California too. Way behind on the rainfall too.
Arizona is in a 11 yr old drought and it is just this year that they are talking about any conservation. We have no water restrictions or any regulations.

Tweety making sense on the War:
Why aren’t the Democrats holding more hearings on the war to make it increasingly uncomfortable for Republicans to support Bush’s war? There’s a lot more the Democrats could be doing.

I was very impressed with Tweety today too.
Loo Hoo. @ 231
Thanks for this. Congress ought to be scheduling open hearings. They should find out who the officers were who were involved and call on them to testify.
This BTW is an incident thoroughly covered by Al the Spook on his Ratiocinations website. There’s a lot more to the story that the Spook talks about. But there’s a mystery wrapped in this enigma, because the Spook has had nothing to say about this situation for almost a month.

Loo Hoo. @ 234
Hi Loo Hoo! Missed your party…
Happy Birthday!
Missed Tweety – was he on the Goopers about S-CHIP as well?
did Pete Stark (D-CA) really say on the House floor today that the president likes to blow our soldiers up “for his own amusement”?… oh boy…
I miss Alfred so much. He was one of the highlights of FDL. He quit writing, but I just know he’s up to something powerful. Can’t wait to hear. He hasn’t posted since September 24th…
Thanks, newtonusr! I kind of have Tweets as background when I get home from work, and don’t know if he spoke about the SCHIP issues. I’ll check C&L.
Where are you newton? Did you see we’re having a get-together in SoCal on Nov. 3rd?
Loo Hoo. @ 238
Thanks for the review. In the Bay Area. A bit farther than katymine. And pondering…

I’ve got to go to bed. Nighters, I’ll check the thread in the morning. Spread the news about the SoCal get-together. Nov. 3rd!
nite loo hoo. will ponder further, but i would love to make it

Good Morning Selise. How many hours of sleep a night do you get?
JPL @ 245
last few months, not nearly enough…. insomnia is not my friend.
not one frickin drop of rain in Athen
raven @ 247
Morning Raven. We had a short but heavy shower before 4 am in Roswell.
jpl and raven – we’re expect three quarters to an inch of rain tonight. wish we could share.
selise @ 249
My house is on the market and yesterday morning we had a few sprinkles and I put crab grass pre-emergent down so even though we only had a brief shower, it was a blessing for me. I do worry about our trees. The pines down here are suffering but I have some beautiful old hardwoods and they can’t be happy.
Good morning, pups. Today in the NYT Bobo has fallen in love with Huckabee. Mr. Krugman says that corporate America’s affection for the Democrats may be good news for campaign directors but is probably bad news for progressives.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got waffles this morning. It rained some during the night — I’m not sure how much, but things were wet when I went out to get the paper. We may get a bit more rain today. Have a fabulous Friday.
Good Morning, Firepups!
It’s humid and mild here in central Jersey with thunderstorms in the forecast for today and tonight. It’s been a little dry here, so the moisture would be welcome—but I’d happily send it south where it’s desperately needed.
I’ve got some iced coffee and fresh bagels this morning. Help yourselves. I’m toasting Chris Dodd, shooting a raspberry at House Republicans who voted against S-chip, and having some serious doubts about Harry Reid over FISA.
I’m getting over a bad head cold, so I haven’t been following the news very closely. Does anyone have a simple explanation of what’s happening on FISA?
Work for peace, every day.
Good morning pups!

Hey JPL,
It’s happening. I never knew I had so many books. They are just everywhere.
This sure is a useful focus for cutting back on random stuff. I look at a box of papers or things and think, do I really want to haul this stuff all the way to Cal and then not use it there, either?
Am trying not to sort more than about an hour a day, gets too stressful otherwise. But during that hour it goes quickly.
One funny thing, I was getting all worried about finding new doctors, until the lightbulb went off and I remembered I was living within walking distance of one of the best hospitals in the country [on purpose, so that maybe I can work with them on projects]. The place is littered with doctors. It was a pretty good laugh.

We’ve got the same deal weather-wise up here in Upstate New York. Last night at 7 p.m., it was 77 degrees F.
For anyone who is still living in “deludo-land” where the concept of global warming does not exist, I’ve got to tell you that at this point in the year, in Upstate New York, it’s blanket and comforter time, the gardens have been put to bed for the year, and you’ve got some teensy bits of concern about exactly when you should be calling your supplier for the fuel oil.
Seventy-seven degrees. At 7 p.m. We slept last night with all the windows open.
And what does this mean? Well, the last time I checked surface temps on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, we were looking at temps in the 50-60 degree range.
Can we all say “massive lake effect snow”?
Thought you could.
raven @ 259
Woo Hoo!
that’s wonderful to hear from down there!
and Good Morning everyone!
T-Rex,
Off topic, What is with the total news blackout by the MSM about Dodds hold on FISA Bill? Not even KO had it on Countdown!
fisa summary (disclaimer: i’m still trying to figure it out and am no expert) –
in the house, the leadership fucked over holt (and tierney, schakowsky, watson, nadler and their supporters). to block their pretty good fisa bill while rushing their fucked up bill (the “restore act”) through. only to have the Rs successfuly torpedo it… at least until next week when the “restore act” may come up for a vote again.
in the senate, it looks like the leadership are fucking over dodd, feingold and probably others – wyden? (it’s hard for me to figure out where people really stand, there’s so much kabuki, smoke and mirrors). i believe a bill (with retroactive telco immunity) was reported out of the senate yesterday. hopefully we’ll see it today. dodd has said he will put a hold on it, but it looks like reid has said he will not honor the hold (although he has been honoring holds from Rs).
holt et al are trying to stand up against no basket warrants and no prospective immunity.
dodd, feingold and wyden are standing up against retroactive immunity.
the leaders in both houses appear to be undermining every good thing that’s coming from their members who are standing up for our rights and for the consitution.
… hope others will jump in with more…

selise @ 264
Have to run to the doctor’s in moments, but I am seething at Reid for this nonsense. Dodd does the first principled thing we have seen in months (the kind of thing Reid promised but has not delivered) and Give Em Hell acts like Bush. If I weren’t so jaded by now, I would be just astonished. Glenn Greenwald has excerpts from an interview he did with Dodd where he speaks about his motivation for this kind of action; he is committed to preserving the Constitution, not manipulating and trashing it in the name of power grabs.
Also, neither the NYT or WaPo has a specific article on this, although it may be imbedded somewhere, I assume because it is “process” and as John Dean writes, it is assumed that nobody cares about “process”.
Although he does state “Bloggers love process”.

just posted on late-late nite Firedoglake.
Good blue morning to the pups from the bluestate that loves things red when they are the color of sox and sunsets and fall sugar maples and cranberries and local apples and did I mention sox?
apropos. interesting (to sox and all baseball fans) discussion yesterday on Dkos prompted by the following remark in the following diary, ostensibly a defense of Joe Torre. The diarist got slammed for erroneous facts, including the rendition charge, about the Sox, while getting Torre the respect he deserves inclduing from Sox fans.
So for Pups who like teams besides our Jane’s Lakers, here is a link to the discussion and a wakeup thought:
And is there a legitimate progressive way to discuss politics and race in baseball? to highlight progressiveness in MLB?
Taking away Rudy’s Yankee stadium privileges is a no brainer, but are there serious ways that baseball can be a vehicle for bringing issues to attention of fans?
And need I say on this glorious morning, it ain’t over until…well you know what Yogi the Berra said…
Go Sox. Even if it means I have to wear a red shirt every day until it’s over and won…since I hate red except in apples and cranberries and did I mention sox?
Pushing the submit button before the coffee kicks in and makes me regret this soul bearing.

Well, for starters, some people thought it would be a good idea to let a chimpanzee and an evil face-shootin’ zombie be in charge.
selise @ 270
yes, but not without a dehumidifier. A pump and raising shelves on supports will also protect from the catastrophic except for Katrina-type catastrophes, ‘though I do suggest a. sniff test to find the least damp part of the basement, and b. start by putting the paperbacks down stairs and let the more expensive books follow after you are sure the books are not harmed or smelly.
I am told one can always put books and papers in the basement in spacebags. Apparently bagged stuff survived Katrina.
zennurse @ 268
here are some. here is one from the wapo, but it is online.
i don’t see much, will keep looking.
something to think about though… rush holt has been doing awesome work on fisa in the house and he’s been getting stabbed in the back by the house leadership.
and nothing was written about it (as far as i can tell) – even in the blogs. so things are improving. at least dodd’s hold is being covered here and by glenn and many other blogs.
Good morning all.
Raven, do you live in Athens?
Books in a basement can also be damaged if your hot water heater leaks, which is pretty common. My sister lost a lot of books and papers this way.

thanks for the good advice. i live on the top of a hill and the basement isn’t very damp – except occassionaly in the summer (condensation?). i do have a dehumidifier, but i don’t usually run it.
there are some shelves in a rough room that i think the previous owner’s kid used…. empty shelves are a tempation when i’ve got piles of books upstairs that don’t have a place on one of already filled bookcases.
never heard of space bags. will have to use the google. thanks!
To myself@251. It’s soul-baring. Needed that coffee.
and now to work. see ya’ later.
selise @ 281
Chance to talk up space bags, which saved us 1000s when we had a clothing moth infestation.
Learned this on a museum textile conservators’ chat site, and don’t have the ref. handy. works for anything but furs.Insert a chemical heat back–the kind sold for back pain, hot side toward the clothes. vacuum out the air as one does normally. The heat will scavenge out the air that remains in the creases of the bag, and kill the bugs quickly.
space bags are better purchased on line in groups than at a local bed/bath type place. cheaper.
and while on this OT topic. putting moth ridden clothes in any freezer except a sub zero or old-fashioned chest freezer does not save the clothes, because in normal fridge freezers, temperature varies and the buggers (actually the larvae) adjust to the difference.
One can also use dry ice. Check out the UC Irvine agri station web site. they explain how.
But it’s a production. Space bag heat. zaps them in a half hour.
and you gain closet space.
sorry for going on and on. Bye pups.
