“For many whites the criminal and irresponsible black underclass represents a revival of barbarism in the midst of Western civilization.” (Dinesh D’Souza, The End of Racism)
Okay, let me see if I can get this straight. Dinesh D’Souza’s new book, What’s So Great About Christianity (Regnery, of course) is an attempt to use Anselm’s Ontological Argument to prove the existence of a Talibangelical God.
Bonus stupid: D’Souza uses the tail end of his written frottage of Hitchens to defend Anselm’s ontological argument. While there may be some versions of the ontological argument that are not pure, refined stupid, Anselm’s is not one of them. Every first year philosophy student I’ve known has used it to prove the existence of the perfect martini or the perfect significant other. I suppose you could even use it to prove the existence of the perfect Muslim….just don’t do that in front of D’Souza. You’ll hurt his feelings.
Um, so, the existence of God. This is a question that has been wrestled with by the greatest minds in human history, all the way back to the night mankind first came out of our caves and threw rocks at the moon.
I really don’t think that a mental midget like Dinesh (”The Muslims hate us because we don’t hate the fags and feminists enough!“) D’Souza is going to pull the answer to that particular conundrum out of his spoiled, skinny ass. Call me crazy, but that seems about as likely as Sean Hannity’s Let Freedom Ring winning the Nobel Prize for literature.
Well, you can’t say that Wingnut Welfare Queens lack ambition. It’s just the follow-through that seems to shoot them out of the sky every single time.

Hey hackworth,
I’m not blowing off your question from the last thread. It’s just that my views on whether health care is inherently a public good (or, alternatively, is a good that can be most efficiently delivered by an appropriately regulated market, which the current market clearly is not) are difficult to explain without at least 5,000 words of microeconomics and public choice theory. I don’t think of that issue in “liberal” vs. “conservative” terms (assuming, for the sake of argument, that either of those terms has a determinate meaning any more).
The closest thing to a meaningful sound-bite that I could come up with is “I don’t think the case for single-payer has been made to my satisfaction.”

After Gasking:
1) Any book written by Dinesh D’Souza is the most marvelous achievement imaginable.
2) The merit of a book is the product of (a) its intrinsic quality, and (b) the ability of its author.
3) The greater the disability (or handicap) of the author, the more impressive the achievement.
4) The most formidable handicap for an author would be non-existence.
5) Therefore, Dinesh D’Souza does not exist.

Lynne Cheney wants a leader in the ‘the Dick Cheney mold.’
from Think Progress by Amanda
In an interview with the Associated Press today, Lynne Cheney indicated that the thought of Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) as president makes her feel “uncomfortable.” She added that she wishes the senator were more like Vice President Cheney:
I kind of like politicians that are more in the Dick Cheney mold, who say what they mean and mean what they say.
Most Americans don’t agree. Just 23 percent approve of the job Cheney is doing.

Bush: ‘I don’t remember what I was doing in 1981.’
from Think Progress by Faiz
In an attempt to decipher President Bush’s views on the recent Israeli airstrike inside Syria, NBC White House correspondent David Gregory asked the president at a press conference this morning whether he agreed with Israel’s decision to bomb the Osirak nuclear facility near Baghdad in 1981. Bush responded:
Ah, Dave, you know I don’t remember what I was doing in 1981. I was living in Midland, Texas. I don’t remember my reaction that far back.
Watch it:
Screenshot
To refresh Bush’s memory, in 1981, his twin daughters Barbara and Jenna were born. His father was vice president of the United States. And Bush was struggling as the head of a failing oil exploration company called Arbusto. The Washington Post reports:
Arbusto’s balance sheets showed that at the end of 1981, it had little more than $48,000 in the bank and more than half of all its assets consisted of “accounts receivable,” money owed to it by others. At the same time, the company owed almost $300,000 in bank loans and close to $120,000 to other creditors.
At that time, Bush received an infusion of cash from a number of sources, including from longtime friend James R. Bath who was handling the finances for the bin Laden family.

There is a thing called the Alternative Minimum Tax, that was put into the Internal Revenue Code in 1969 after Congressional hearings spotlighted a small number of high-income or high-net-worth individuals who paid no income tax. Over time, the combination of changes in the way AMT is computed and the fact that the threshold amounts for application of AMT are not indexed for inflation have turned it into a monster that capriciously hits millions of Americans without warning. It’s virtually impossible to know whether you’re going to get hit by AMT until you finish doing your return.
Everybody hates it, everybody knows it needs to be fixed or eliminated. The problem is that it raises huge amounts of revenue. I’ve seen estimates of the 10-year cost of repealing AMT that are as high as $2 trillion. Which means that everybody knows that you can’t just get rid of the AMT without making significant changes to the “regular” income tax.
And the additional fuckery factor is that for a variety of reasons, if you map the incidence of AMT, it hits more people who live in blue states than in red states, and hits them harder. So the Republicans have zero incentive to do anything about it.
Somehow, Grassley has escaped the mind control ray of the Grover the Bad. The fact that a senior Republican is talking about this kind of fundamental change in the tax system is really big news.
Suzanne @ 122
Yeah, but the phony campaign (Limbaugh would just hate it) has been going on for months now. The only thing limited to 6 weeks is the barrage of election advertising. Because Howard has had Bushtox injections, there’ll be loads of negative advertising too. And, as May has rightly pointed out, most Australians have already decided how we’re going to vote so we’ll either ignore the ads or get irritated by them. Advertising agencies and the media are the only winners. Just give me the frickin ballot paper NOW!

They claim to have had more NYT bestsellers than any other publisher of their size and they list them showing no. of weeks listed and top position.
They are a subsid. of Eagle Publishing, which also runs the conservative book club and rents mailing lists, their own and other “selected” organizations.
The conservative book club claims 80,000 members and sends 3 books for $1 each when you join. Ms Coulter is prominently featured as a favorite $1 book option.
All of their books are the same (expected) strong RW dung and most from the expected writers. A couple of outliers like Mark Furman.
No currently sitting politicians books are evident – they do publish Newt tho.
A LOT of their books only last on the NYT list for 1-3 weeks ????
Interestingly, hardcovers are priced c. $18 – way low in current market.
They only accept submissions from agents.

Just back from a rehearsal of my brass quintet (two trumpets, French horn, trombone and tuba). We met regularly for about three years from 2001 to 2004, then broke up except to play at a few close friends’ or thieir kids’ weddings. We’ve got extra people on all the instruments, so we can take breaks or meet even if somebody’s gone from town.
Our best tuba player is in London, our 2nd best in New England, so a friend I hadn’t seen in a year and a half showed up. He’s a Vietnam vet with PTSD. He was depressed and very obese last time I saw him. But he’s lost about 130 pounds, had great breath control on the tuba and wasn’t depressed. Great to see him.

Mukasey seems to think that warrantless searches by the government are just peachy, as long as the evidence is not used in a criminal investigation.
`I think he would have authority to act,” Mukasey said when asked about the president’s powers to collect enemy intelligence. “The Fourth Amendment bars unreasonable searches” and “may well be much more flexible” about intelligence collection than the “gathering of evidence for criminal cases,” he said.
So would he view it reasonable when the searches are about gathering intelligence of a psychologist of a government whistleblower (Daniel Ellsberg), or what the opposition party might be planning (Watergate)? Certainly these warrantless incursions were not intendedc to acquire criminal evidence (which would have been thrown out of any courtroom), but to get information for harassment and political gain.
The 4th Amendment doesn’t restrict searches only for criminal cases, though. It holds that any search ansd seizure requires a warrant. And that history goes back to the use of warrantless search by an English king to harass an associate of a pamphleteer. Other papers were seized that had no relationship with the pamphlets, and no were not criminal evidence. Their removal was simply done to harass the plaintiff.

Good morning, 68 and RAIN, blessed rain, in the area…
in trendy Blue Ridge Ga.
And I don’t know about you guys but it almost seemed as if Sen Leahy, a man I really respect, was fawning over Mukasey. His answers were not reassuring. Why is this guy getting it so easy, given the horror that was Alberto G.?
And, in lieu of conversation, heres the complete text of W.H. Auden’s “Lullabye” (also titled
“Lay Your Sleeping Head, My Love”)
W. H. Auden
Lay your sleeping head, my love,
Human on my faithless arm;
Time and fevers burn away
Individual beauty from
Thoughtful children, and the grave
Proves the child ephermeral:
But in my arms till break of day
Let the living creature lie,
Mortal, guilty, but to me
The entirely beautiful.
Soul and body have no bounds:
To lovers as they lie upon
Her tolerant enchanted slope
In their ordinary swoon,
Grave the vision Venus sends
Of supernatural sympathy,
Universal love and hope;
While an abstract insight wakes
Among the glaciers and the rocks
The hermit’s sensual ecstasy.
Certainty, fidelity
On the stroke of midnight pass
Like vibrations of a bell,
And fashionable madmen raise
Their pedantic boring cry:
Every farthing of the cost,
All the dreadful cards foretell,
Shall be paid, but not from this night
Not a whisper, not a thought,
Not a kiss nor look be lost.
Beauty, midnight, vision dies:
Let the winds of dawn that blow
Softly round your dreaming head
Such a day of sweetness show
Eye and knocking heart may bless.
Find the mortal world enough;
Noons of dryness see you fed
By the involuntary powers,
Nights of insult let you pass
Watched by every human love.
morning MR. Bill!
selise do you ever sleep?
You are always here, I mean. And watching the hearings is something i can only do (much less tolerate) occasionally.
MR. Bill @ 187
not nearly as much as i would like. major problems with insomnia the last few months. :(
yeah, i’m hooked on watching the hearings (and even the house and senate floor). i blame it on christy. *g*
I had seen you say that. As much as I hate it, ambien seems to work occasionally. I feel weird the next day, but only do it every 2 weeks or so.
I’ve used melatonin, Valerian, chamomile, benadryl..
yo
Zevon:
So much to do, there’s plenty on the farm
I’ll sleep when I’m dead
Saturday night I like to raise a little harm
I’ll sleep when I’m dead
I’m drinking heartbreak motor oil and Bombay gin
I’ll sleep when I’m dead
Straight from the bottle, twisted again
I’ll sleep when I’m dead
Well, I take this medicine as prescribed
I’ll sleep when I’m dead
It don’t matter if I get a little tired
I’ll sleep when I’m dead
So much to do, there’s plenty on the farm
I’ll sleep when I’m dead
Saturday night I like to raise a little harm
I’ll sleep when I’m dead

Aww love Zevon, but he’s pulling yer leg.
Sleep GOOD!
I could get eight hours and still take a nap.
Sleep is the only true drug, the passport to another world, ‘knits up the raveled sleeve of care.’
I’ve had periods of depression when I wanted to sleep 10 hrs. or more.. When my late wife died, I didn’t want to wake up some days.
Selise, I hate ambien, but occasionally, it’s a blessing.
raven @ 192
Aww love Warren Z. but he’s pulling yer leg.
Sleep GOOD!
I could get 8 hours and still want a nap. And, like the political problems of the US the real solution to our drought is incremental. It’s like wanting a revolution to want a hurricane…
They would work, but the cost can be so high…
MR. Bill @ 196
I get about 6 but as we age we need less. That’s what I hear.
Sleep is the only true drug.
It ‘knits up the ravelled sleeve of care..”
After my late wife died I had real trouble sleeping. Took melatonin, valerian, benadryl, chamomile, everything herbal or over the counter.e
Ambien works but I feel weird the next day.
Now, especially after a physical day, its not so much an issue.
Good Morning. Hoping for rain in GA reminds me of growing up in New England waiting for the first snow storm. We’ve already had a few sprinkles, yahoo.
JPL, my well has been pumped dry several times, most recently when my daughter came home from college Saturday , with 5 loads of laundry(”I don’t like the laundry mat) and a very long shower…
We need some rain here bad..
MR. Bill @ 199
How deep is your well? It might be time for some of the cities to consider wells but for a community as large as Roswell, you’d probably have to drill down 500 ft.
Good morning, pups. Today in the NYT it’s Collins and Cohen. Ms. Collins (no, she’s not TOMC today) has a column called “None Dare Call It Child Care.” Mr. Cohen writes about France’s finance minister, Christine Lagarde, and her efforts to rehabilitate the concept of work in France.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got a selection of bagels and cream cheese. It’s toasted cinnamon for the boss lady, and I think a poppy seed for me. Help yourselves, and there’s more cream cheese in the fridge. Hope your day is wonderful.
JPL @ 203
Something like 90-100 feet, an old bored (as opposed to hand dug or drilled well.)
And as I’ve posted before, I’m in a little hollow just up the road from Georgia Mountain Water, division Suntory INC (of Japan), that is pumping 100K a day as bottled spring (actually drilled well water). A Hydrologist from UGA has said it couldn’t possibly affect wells, but, as a geologist of my acquaintance told me,
“Its an understatement to say that the hydrology of the southern Appalachians is poorly understood.”
Good morning Marion, it’s oatmeal for me. Ya’ll talk it easy, I’m headed to the BF’s for the weekend, catch up Monday.
And even it it doesn’t make a difference, Glorious Rain..
Mr. Bill, I’m sure that Sonny will encourage Suntory to stop bottling water for shipping overseas until our crisis is over.
Mr. Bill:
Great news you are getting rain. We visited the southeast in Sept & it was obvious how dry it was, parched cornfields, etc. We stopped at an Alpaca farm in the Blue Ridge mountains in Virginia & they were already feeding their alpacas hay. Going to be a long & expensive winter feeding them if they can even find hay sources when they run low.
NE Minn was in drought most of the summer. Many people with shallow wells went dry were on a long waiting list with the well drillers. It started raining in late August & it hasn’t stopped for long since. Pouring rain all last night & still raining. I hope that happens for all of you in the parched southeast.
JPL @ 207
The kicker is that GA has no severance taxes, so this public resource is being bottled and hauled out over a couple of old wind-y country roads, and the people of Ga. don’t see a cent…ironranger @ 208
Yeah I was noticing the flooding in the upper midwest. In ‘90 and ‘04 there was flooding here. I would almost take that over drought.
Good morning!
egregious @ 207
Morning, We are all anticipating rain here in northern GA. It might not help with the drought but at least it’s something.
Ok i’m outta here, y’all please go read poem at 185, and forgive multipleposting, I didn’t realize some stuff had gone to moderation and just kept repeating, assuming, in a caffeinated state, my provider was flaking out (it’s the phone co. and honestly, they go on the fritz every time it rains..)
Love and peace pups..
They say there’s a chance that we’ll get “scattered thunderstorms” today. My jasmine and I have our fingers and leaves crossed.
Good Morning!
glad to hear that at least some rain is gonna fall down there!

Mr. Bill:
SE Minn had serious flooding (river country) & are still struggling to recover even tho our clueless leader promised “floods of money” when he visited but that’s another story.
Our area didn’t have any major flooding even when Mother Nature dumped 8 inches in one 12 hour period. Some low lying fields look like lakes but I’m really happy the ground is getting a good soaking before the hard freezing sets in.
For the Georgia firepups out there, Josh Lanier is running against Saxby Chambliss. Here’s his facebook page:

I sent him a bit of love through Blue America yesterday. My guess is he’s gonna need all the help he can get if we have any chance of getting rid of dear, dear Saxby.

Wow sounds like Washington Journal is reading fdl before they figure out their topics. Should be an interesting morning. Do we know what time the override vote is?
Anybody else notice how much Willie ‘n’ Joe in the Morning resemble the bully and the toady in Gene Shepherd’s Christmas Story?
Willie sure is workin’ on his Tucker Carlson Lite persona this morning.

Imus would have supported SCHIP. We would have had an ally. And he would have asked every guest where they stood. He would have hammered it. It may even have made a difference.
‘xactly so.
I’ll go further. Mrs. Imus would be giving speeches about it.

Mystery underwear stymies Guantanamo investigators
The investigators concluded more vigilance was needed to prevent contraband from entering the camp that holds 330 suspected al Qaeda operatives, said Capt. Pat McCarthy, the military’s chief lawyer for the detention operation at Guantanamo.
Media reports of underwear smuggling prompted snickers when it came to light last month and McCarthy admitted, “We laughed too.”

Good morning. Rain — yup, just came back from driving my son to work and it was pouring. And they say it will be pouring rain tomorrow too.
/snark — I caused this rain because in early September, I started watering the grass to give everything a long drink before winter. three days later the rain started, and … well I don’t have to water anymore. Everything is well hydrated /end snark
Also my morning grumble is about what used to be my favorite radio station here in MN — BOB 106.1. In the last 2 weeks they have started spewing republican talking points. I do not remember hearing anything from them before, so this is new.
1. They said the DNC chairman is sending people to NASCAR races to do research and asking that they get vaccinated before they go. They ridiculed the idea that NARCAR people are dirty, filthy – and Dean sent an email saying that asking people to be vaccinated had NOTHING to do with the trip, but they continue to foist that lie on us
2. They say that we have to fight Iraq and Iran because we want to be safe. Don’t know about you, but I feel anything but safe these days…
3. SCHIP is a) being used to give rich adults health care and their dime and 2) tax on smoking is stupid because there are not enough people smoking these days to raise enough money to pay for the program. But they would be happy to help poor children, just not rich adults. They heard this from John Cronyn of TX. harummph.
These stupid things will only be heard in rural Minnesota to give the base something to vote for next year. Yuk.

I guess you didn’t get that the argument wasn’t at issue at all, ever. The whole point was to see if you could use any argument to come around to proving God exists, so the Church would be happy.
After all, they know as well as anyone that arguments don’t create or discreate or prove or disprove anything when it comes to spirituality and deities.
