Liveblogging the Mukasey confirmation hearings:
Lieberman, who has known Mukasey for 43 years, assures the Committee that Mukasey has a “great sense of humor” and a “ready smile.”
Lieberman also assures us that Mukasey is “a man of law, not a man of politics” — is there any individual less suited to make that judgment than Joseph Lieberman?
And, says Lieberman, in the midst of our “war on Islamic fascism,” Mukasey has ideal insight into “how to balance security and liberty.” I ask the same question — is there any individual less suited to make that judgment than Joseph Lieberman?
In a word: No.
But it will be nice to watch all our Senators confirm this “very serious man” who will not say that the President does not have the right to detain US citizens seized on American soil indefinitely without charging them.
We’re ruled by moral pygmies.

Jane!
Mukasey. A man for the times.
Glenn Greenwald RAWKS!
Bwahahahahaha…we’re ruled by moral pygmies…no kidding!!! That is funny!!! Reminds me of those little creatures in Twilight Zone that were on the steps and biting people in the ankles..and all evil and everything..Anyone know what I’m talking about!!??? I may be mixing it up with the space people that landed in the giant’s house.
Same difference.
Hi Jane. Thanks for the post and the video.
Yeah, I had to laugh during Countdown this evening when Keith was asking Dana Milbank if Bush was playing with a full deck and Milbank stated some gibberish about how Bush was actually doing a little better now that he was “appointing grown-ups like Gates and Mukasey” to positions in the administration.
If folks were thinking Mukasey was going to be a “breath of fresh air” at DOJ, think again.
While not a moronic toady like Fredo, Mukasey’s been drinking this Admin’s Kool-Aid for a long time.
And of course, as our Democratic Senators close their eyes and pretend otherwise, we get the same old same old.
Mukasey. Roll over Democrats.

Nice to know Di Fi and the nominee are so very concerned with American Citizens being rendered and tortured for years.. when they both cannot even pronounce Padilla correctly after all these years.
OT, sorry Jane. Friends are coming any minute…

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOO HOO! A good day to remember for evah!
Thank you. You know, it’s like a birthday I’ve never had before! So many kind wishes from my virtual friends. Such good people, like you, NPB. Gives me hope that we can salvage our country and our ideals. Thanks so much!
He certainly sounded sane from the little I could listen in on at the office before I had to run off to Pitts’ office. I asked on the thread for help with the parsing thinking he was toying with our serious dems, Leahy, Kohl, and DiFi. Reading Glenn later on was an eye opener. (with a few chuckles thrown in)
So what do the dems gain by giving this guy a pass?

Be careful not to insult pygmies. I’m confident they have greater moral standing than the current crew in DC, both sides of the aisle.
How did the unitary Executive become some such a fashionable trend?

Without a doubt.
I had to laugh at Hatch’s obsession with p*rn. Like Foley and protecting kids and Craig going after gays, me thinks Orin doest protest too much.
It should be clear that those who would trade security for freedom are fuckin cowards- not worthy of the name “American”… We are the country founded on–”Give me liberty or give me death!”

Like this swell guy in PA03?
Mukasey upheld the Presidents declared power to seize and detain an American citizen indefinitely, saying the AUMF gave the president such power.
My question.. Did Di Fi know this before she voted Mukasey out of committee?
Eureka Springs @ 24
we need to get that power BACK from bush. re-instate the trial system.
Eureka Springs @ 24
Have they voted him out of committee already? I know they will, but have they already?
RevDeb @ 18
That was really dumb. Why the obsession? Kids being blown to bits in the M.E., and he has to focus on porn? Meanwhile, W is talking about WWIII, nukular annihilation, insisting on playing the dangerous game of all time. That has me really outraged.
RevDeb @ 26
I thought so, but now that you mention it…
I suppose I will hedge my bets. I think I may start advocating a third party.
dakine01 @ 7
Chris Matthews pressed Barbara Boxer on the full-deck topic as well on Hardball today. She was being very cautious, interviewed in the Capitol Rotunda where I’m sure they are overheard by all, but she said something, on the topic of World War Three, that she feared the President’s comments weren’t “stable.” Tweety pounced: “Are you saying the President is unstable, Senator Boxer?” She backed away, saying he was putting words in her mouth.
I wonder what’s cooking. Milbank replied to Olbermann: “You don’t hear that talked about in the hallway nearly as much as you hear discussion like that about Cheney.”
Please Jane, I am begging–please write a post about this exchange from Carlson’s shitty show on Monday with fuckwit Cliff May:
Here’s the link to the whole disgusting exchange. It’s unbelievably prepubescent.
RevDeb @ 18
Years ago, I heard (from a very gay man) that Hatch is gay. Have never seen or heard any other evidence, though.
I didn’t find info that the committee voted, but did find this:
Attorney General-designate Michael Mukasey is headed for swift approval with scant objections, the powerful Democrat who will chair his confirmation hearings said Tuesday.
“I would expect him to be confirmed,” Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., told reporters after meeting with the former federal judge.
“I like Judge Mukasey,” Leahy added. “I want him to succeed.”
From HuffPo earlier this morning.
My party has no guts. My party has no principles. And they are still dealing with Joe Lieberman.
One thing’s for sure. I’m not going to depend on the Democrats to get us out of this mess. Yikes. And Hillary is the best we can do?
When a reporter followed up and asked Bush if he felt he was losing leverage and relevance, Bush replied: “I’ve never felt more engaged and more capable of getting the American people to realize there’s a lot of unfinished business.”
Which, let’s be blunt, is hard to believe.
Everything you need to know about today’s hastily scheduled press conference was telegraphed by John Whitesides of Reuters: “Deepening unhappiness with President George W. Bush and the U.S. Congress soured the mood of Americans and sent Bush’s approval rating to another record low this month, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday. . . .
“Bush’s job approval rating fell to 24 percent from last month’s record low for a Zogby poll of 29 percent. A paltry 11 percent gave Congress a positive grade, tying last month’s record low.”
(Froomkin)
Probably an outlier- but does my heart good to see Clusterfuck at 24%
genoasail @ 31
I have one little thing to say. They are pricks, little pricks all.
General strike anyone? It’s probably too late for 11/6, but really, don’t you think we could pull off a mass strike? Generate some outrage. Create a STIR???
Hi Jane,
As soon as I see something like “Lieberman assures…” I know I can safely skip to the next person or subject. Although here I couldn’t help but take a peek at the rest. Heh.
Joe Lieberman and his handlers are pushing hard to attack Iran.
Everytime I hear or see Joe Lieberman, my heart sinks, and I think about what David Horowitz claimed in Q&A on CSPAN the other day; that he personally “purged” Lieberman from his party. That is sad.
Considering the need for a federal AUSA investigation into the 2006 Joe Lieberman $400,000 Slush Fund, isn’t it a conflict of interest for him to be introducing the Attorney General-designate to the Judiciary Committee?
And just how is an introduction from RGJoe supposed to help the doofus anyway?

Solidarity worked in Poland…at least for awhile.
That was, of course in Poland, but my Hungarian friend once pointed out that, when one revolution ends, the next one immediately begins.
Thanks Teddy – came home too late to catch Keith’s 5PM broadcast. Did Keith do a follow up to Milbank’s Cheney comment? I took a short cut home through Pebble Beach (17 Mile Drive) and almost drove off the road after spotting a fancy BMW with a bumpersticker that read TO HAGUE WITH CHENEY! in the same blood red background with upper case white letters of mine: BUSH DESERVES A THIRD TERM: PRISON. Dare I hope the times they are a changing at long last here in Rethuglican-ville?
Isn’t it fairly obvious the plan is to attack Iran? And of course that begs the question where will such an action lead?
Yes LS!!
What’s the good of getting sad or mad….when we can ORGANIZE!
TeddySanFran @ 42
Not only that, but I saw that the votes for Lieberman were precisely to the vote, the same in two election cycles. Why was that never looked into?
Few months ago rumor was Fucktard had hit the bottle again. Anybody hear that lately?
And last night I told the story about helping my son with his “How to Be A Good Citizen” poster for scouts and we’re cutting out pictures from magazines and I cut out a picture one of a soldier and he says “Nah, I don’t think there should be any wars, Dad.” And I was so happy. So we go to the scout meeting tonight and they had a guy from the Air Force talking to them. Least I know from last night my little guy has his head on right.
And BTW, anybody votes against SCHIP is on my shitlist: Tom Feeney, Ginny Waite Brown and all the Republicans from NJ who used to be progressive as Republicans go when I lived there. Shit list. All of ‘em.

Hello to all,
This is way OT: I woke up this morning with half my face frozen. After consulting a few people (none of them doctors, unfortunately, because I have no insurance) I think I have what journalist Amy Goodman had, Bells Palsy. The right side of my face is not moving at all. I consulted online with a site that talks about this and I seem to have all the symptoms. The good news is this is a temporary thing (if indeed it is Bells Palsy).
Sorry for being way off topic. But with my face acting so friggin’ weird, I can’t think of anything else at the moment. And my support group is so small these days that I feel like you guys would at least care a little.
Thanks for listening.
Anyone see the ABC Evening News tonight? Charlie Gibson commenting on Colbert joining the Presidential race. Gibson is a tool.
Isn’t it true (and worth noting) that Mukasey is also very Rudi-friendly?
(Giuliani named Mukasey and his son to one of his presidential campaign advisory committees.)

ADM @ 71
I’m so sorry you are having this problem. Hope you can get some medical attention soon. Take care of yourself. Will be thinking of you.
I’d be a lot happier if the committee had actually asked tough questions of Mukasey, instead of the same cr*ppy softball stuff they used with Roberts and Alito and every other nominee in the last several years. (It isn’t the exact same questions, it’s the same attitude: ‘We know you’re one of us, but we have to ask questions anyway, so tell us what we want to hear, not what we need to hear, and we’ll give you a pass.’ Ptooey!)
Remind them, when they start complaining about what he’s doing, that they didn’t do any real questioning of him, they accepted all his answers, and it’s their own d*mned fault if he’s another Constitution-hating Bushista.
LS @ 76
Yeah, my sister in law had it once. It eventually went away. Just make sure you go to the doctor and get treatment.
ADM @ 71
I hope it is a temporary thing! Rest well and get better soon.
ADM, do you have access to any health care through your county?
ADM @ 71
Hope that it turns out to be temporary & that you recover ASAP. Did your online research discover any home remedies (hot packs, cold packs, aspirin, whatever) that might help speed up the recovery if it is Bells Palsey?
LS @ 27
Also, what is this “main stream obscenity”
he talked about? Where does it happen? On the Internet…the blogs? Funny that there was a study out saying that cursing was helpful in the workplace.
Thanks for the comments. Yeah, I discovered it is temporary. I look forward to being able to drink again without dribbling and being able to talk again without slurring. In the meantime it’s just weird. =/ (That’s me smiling)
LS @ 67
The Congress is spineless, the President is an arrogant fool, the VP is Satan incarnate. If, God forbid, bombing attacks are ordered, will the pilots refuse to carry out the orders? I am trying really hard not to be cynical, but I honestly think they really do not care if they bring about WWIII.
ADM is everything else working ok? speech, etc?
The surest sign that the Bushies are planning on invading Iran is Putin’s visit to Iran; Putin needs to consolidate his power after he steps down as President, and as the Bushies taught the modern world, the best way to consolidate and maintain power is to put your people in a perpetual war. Hit Iran, you hit Putin now, and the Cold War part Duex is on. Bastards.
Well, I gotta go. Some conference or some bulshit at work tomorrow, I’ll come home, find out about SCHIP, get pissed, watch Rutgers-USF, get really pissed, then come here. See ya’s.
Everybody did good work on SCHIP.

My heart goes out to you. When I came down with a nasty case of shingles, good folks on FDL gave me some sound advice from personal experience. Just having some kind words did wonders. I understand Bells Pulsy is temporary. Take care and give us a progress report. Good listeners are here.
ADM @ 89
lol, well your humour is intact :)
ADM @ 89
It is a strange syndrome. Generally, people wake up with it in the morning…scary…but it is a paralysis that generally affects the facial nerves, and usually follows sleeping by a drafty window, or an airconditioner on too strong. You will get over it. Much love and good vibes to you.
ADM @ 71
ADM- I am not a doctor. Huge caveat. But, from what you say, it may well be Bell’s Palsy. I know two people who have had this. Same as you report. Sudden onset. Variable time until it goes away. I am not up to date, as to possible treatments, but from what I learned back then, no known medical treatment. My two colleagues just had to wait it out. And, it did lift, almost as suddenly as it arrived. I wish you the best. xxooo
RevDeb @ 18

I’m layin’ off Orrin for a few days ’cause he was good on SCHIP.
Goodnight pups, keep on keeping on!
ADM– Just consulted with Mrs Dr Gromit (family physician). There is in fact no treatment for Bell’s palsy, and it almost always does go away by itself. But if you can get to a clinic to confirm the diagnosis, that would be a good thing. Any low income/sliding scale clinics in your town? Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Elliott @ 101
G’nite Elliott!!
On Muskasey: People that have stepped up in front of him say he is all business, but as reported he does lean right on the detainee/war on terror issues. He is a modern-day Jewish liberal: tough on islamo-fanactics, overly tough at times, but fair-minded and left of center on civil rights, domestic issues and consumer rights.
Sweet dreams. Elliott.
ADM,
I hope that you will try and get an evaluation from a doctor to make sure that Bell’s palsy is correct.
Happy Birthday Loo Hoo!

Yeah, no other problems. My speech is a bit slurred but I blame that on the right side of my mouth not functioning. No tingling in the arm, no stroke symptoms. So I’m going to give it a couple more days and see if there is improvement. As I say, it’s just weird my face acting like this. And now that I’ve got a handle on what’s happening I can laugh about it.
Thanks again to everyone for all your kind words and comments.

I do know someone who had Bell’s palsy. They’re okay now but it’s no fun, hope you are feeling better soon.
ADM @ 109
Sorry to hear you’re feeling poorly. Does it affect the entire side of your face? I’m thinking particularly your eye, in regards to blinking. In my former life as a paycheck earner I worked for an ophthalmologist. If the lid is not closing completely your eye can become irritated due to lack of tears that refresh the eye with each blink. Patients that had Bells sometimes needed to use eyedrops (artificial tears), or ointments, or sometimes tape the lid closed depending on the severity of the palsy. If there is any way to have a doc check you out I would do it.
Get Tough @ 104

Just listened to Stewart on the Lauer interview of Craig. Can any two people be so out of touch as he & his wife? Sounds like they’re both space aliens (no offense to space aliens, who I’ve never met).
madmommy @ 115
Yeah, the entire right side of my face. I heard about the possible eye problems too. I’ve been doing the recommended things and will tape it shut tonight while I sleep. That seems to be the biggest concern, the eye drying out because the lid won’t close completely. So I’m on top of it. Thanks for the comments though.
eCAHNomics @ 119
Mrs. Craig is just earning her paycheck again as the steadfast and dependable beard she agreed to be. An enlightening question for Coke Lauer to have asked would have been, “When was the last time you two had sex with each other?”
Mukasey’s position on FISA is unacceptable, but it is telling that he repudiates El Gonzo’s position on torture. I hate to say it, but this nominee is as good as we’re going to get from Bush’s cast of idiots. And without a Dem-controlled Congress, we’d probably have another Gonzo.

ADM – Put your face up tightly against your computer monitor and we’ll get Dr. Bill Frist to check you out.
Just kidding. Godspeed. Best Wishes for a quick recovery. Love your comments.
How to BALANCE security and liberty?
cough cough cough… OMG… Joe Lieberman has proved once again that he deserves neither.
ADM:
Read your comment above.
If you have a facial droop but can move BOTH your eyebrows up and down EQUALLY WELL, then I recommend you GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM tonight. (strokes can look like this)
However, if you have a right facial drop and have difficulty moving your right eyebrow, (the same side as your mouth droop), then this is a GOOD sign that you may have Bell’s palsy.
You already know about the eye patch. Remember to use the eye drops during the day, too, because your eyelid may not blink fully causing your eye to dry out.
There are other causes of facial droop (Lyme disease, viral infections) so you may want to follow up with a medical doctor at some point.
ADM @ 71
Weird crap.
I woke up the other day with extreme pain in my left shoulder near the bicep. They told me it was inflammation (from what nobody knows) and gave me some prednisone. It worked miracles.

“It’s worked for them so far. It’s how they came to power, it’s how they’ve asserted their power. And (if we are lucky) it will be how they’ll act when they’ve had their power taken away. It’s the only thing they know.” comment of jjf- it refers to the act of feigning moral outrage while asserting the right to do anything illegal or no , oneself.
now here is Schumer:
Sen. Charles Schumer, a Democrat from Mukasey’s home state of New York, said he already had heard the answer he wanted in a private meeting with Mukasey a day earlier. Schumer said he asked the nominee, “Will you have the courage to look squarely into the eyes of the president of the United States and tell him ‘no,’ if that is your best legal and ethical judgment?”
Mukasey, Schumer said, replied: “Absolutely. That is what I am there for.”
What Schumer should have said is ” Will you say no to David Addington?”
Eureka Springs @ 10
At one time Padilla was reportedly insisting to his lawyer, I believe, that his name should be pronounced “Pa-DILL-a,” rather than the usual Spanish way. Only near the actual court date —after he had had a lot of contact with the lawyers— was the pronunciation re-corrected to what most had assumed.
It occured to me that that could have been a sign of how badly and in what ways he was being treated. There was an Italian kid in my elementary school with a “gl” in his name. Certain people, some of them adults, took undisguised glee in hitting that g as hard as possible.
So supporting the idea that the president can order the indefinite detention of American citizens on ’secret’ charges with no access is considered a ‘left-of-center’ civil rights position now?
What’s the right-of-center position then? “Kill everyone now”?
