Three down, two to go:
Representative Bob Etheridge notified the press today that he will vote to override Bush’s veto of the child health bill tomorrow. This follows Representative McIntyre’s switch on Monday of this week. Now I feel really guilty about being so critical of their earlier votes against the bill. Actually not, but I’m ecstatic they’ve decided to do the right thing.
Meanwhile Jim Marshall crawls into the lap of Erick Erickson, author of the Georgia Voter ID law meant to suppress African-American votes. I’d call Marshall’s attempt to suck up to Erickson dog whistle bigotry for white southern voters but I don’t think the racism is that subtle.
The man needs a primary. Badly.
UPDATE: You helped us run newspaper ads and local phone calls to flip these votes. But we’re still $3.5k short of covering our (your!) $10k investment. Please help out if you can by giving here. — Pach

Fucking A!!! Jane.
Hey Jane!
hurray!
Have they all flipped, or are there more?
Yeah, another one!!! 8-)
Yay Jane!
If that’s Rep Marshall in the picture, he looks like he’s been sucking sour lemons for about three weeks.
Marshall is a joke but the idea that his seat would be filled by a democrat is unlikely. The Democratic Party Of GA has gone down the drain along with the water.
Somebody give me a CHEESEBURGER!
w00t, good work FDL/Blue America
Loo Hoo. @ 8
Did you see the birthday pic I left you downstairs?
Wow! I’m really impressed.
Jane!!!!
You’ve got mail re the PA 16th. Visited his local office today and met with the aide along with several other clergy. Typical pushing of BS talking points with no back up data. And the guy got testy with me. He’s got an attitude. I hear he’s got the same attitude problems as his boss. Pitts is the pits and needs to go.
Comments are closed already on Pelosi and the Armenian genocide resolution, eh? Well, it’s off-topic, but I’ll say it here: FireDogLake, you are heartbreakingly wrong about Turkey and the Armenian genocide. Do more homework and try again. Please. It really does matter, and not just to Armenians. (See my last name? It’s not Weberian.)
Jane, you can be so proud if this bill passes. You and your headliners will be in large part responsible for helping millions of kids. Awesome!
That post picture…I’ve seen more honest smiles on carny midways and fleet lease auction lots.
“The man needs a primary” … or a good dermatologist.
Loo Hoo. @ 14
Yes!
and we can budge those last two over to the side of goodness and light!

He looks a little like the guy in the movie with the pig, Babe.
Tim Weber @ 13
Yes. It’s a conspiracy.
Elliott @ 17
Why is it I have this feeling that all of these folks may vote the right way, but they will also whine and complain about “foul mouthed fem bloggers” who harassed them with ads…or threats of ads…or rumors of threats of ads….I’m just sayin’
In case anyone has any doubts Jim Marshall needs a primary challenger badly, I’ll add that he also voted for the Military Commissions Act and for Federal Government intervention in the Terry Schiavo case.
Toby Wollin @ 20
Let ‘em be WATB all they want as long as they do the proper thing and vote to override. I’m thinkin’ they’ll get over it.
Brownandserve @ 21
Please lets get this guy. If he is in a wingnut district, I might understand the vote for the MCA but never for Schiavo. Crazy.
RevDeb @ 18
That’ll do, RevDeb, that’ll do.

Positive words from Attorney Stephen Watt of the ACLU:
No matter how many setbacks we experience no matter how many heartbreaking losses we have to endure we will keep at it until, finally, decent Americans force their government to respect the rule of law. This is what keeps the lawyers and our amazing clients here at the ACLU going knowing that history will be on our side.
dakine01 @ 22
I was hoping that they were changing because they’d “seen the light” – instead, I’m thinking it may be to avoid threats come election time (the light, it burns, it burns).
Too much to ask, I guess.
Twain @ 23
I’m willing to put some money where my pixels are if there’s a legitimate challenger to be found.
Great work, Jane. Harry Reid could take lessons from you on how to get the votes. Isn’t this what he’s elected and selected to do? You should be getting his pay check and benefits. Mostly, his benefits.
And Jane et al should be incredibly proud even if the vote fails. Such good, good work.
Loo Hoo. @ 32
I’m psyched, I think we can do it!
Loo Hoo. @ 32

Regardless, the message congress will get is that FDL is a rising force to be reckoned with.

QuakerGirl @ 35
helps being loud-mouthed!
What’s the current tally on the vote overall?
Howie also has a post up: THREE DOWN, TWO TO GO–
This part was interesting-
~~Today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports a somewhat embarrassing moment for Democratic power-behind-the-scenes (i.e.- boss), Rahm Emanuel on CBS’ Early Show today when he and right-wing extremist Tom Price (R-GA) got into a nasty tiff over SCHIP.
Emanuel fumed that Price’s vote against a bill that would add $35 billion to the program, known in Georgia as PeachCare, showed he was “isolated from the real concerns that are facing working parents.”
“The Republican governor of Georgia has endorsed what we are doing here,” Emanuel said. “And the reason is because we’re solving a big problem in Georgia.”
Price countered Emanuel’s wielding of Gov. Sonny Predue’s name by tossing out [Congressman Jim] Marshall.
“I know [Emanuel] doesn’t think that his colleague on the Democrats side, Jim Marshall, doesn’t care about kids, and Jim Marshall voted with us on this,” Price said.~~~
Apart from pressing to get the veto overridden, the fact that the Dem “leadership” has been, in effect, called out by The New Whips (BA, FDL, C&L, DWT etc), is sending a message to the “leadership”. Love it.
He has one challenger, Robert Nowak, a school teacher in Macon. The mayor of Macon is considering a run as well. A local activist and blogger, Amy Morton, of Macon, is another possible candidate. http://georgiawomenvote.blogspot.com/ is her site. I cannot tell from the front page whether she is yet another foul-mouthed femblogger, but she linked to the ActBlue page on the Marshall ad, and to Down With Tyranny.
As Howie Klein says, “Three down, two to go!”
Great job Jane. We’re all really proud of you
QuakerGirl @ 31
Amen. Effing A-men.
Bush vetoed SCHIP only to show everybody he’s still “relevant.”

41,906 visitors to FDL today (per the site meter, not counting alien visitors and such) *G*…oh, yeah…btw…if you are NSA, FBI, CIA, make the frigging calls too!!!
Make those calls to the last two stragglers!!!!
We can do it!
Pushback…give the kids healthcare, if you care.
Can someone who has been tuned in today tell us what the status of FISA is? I understand it has been pulled “off the table” temporarily. What gives?

That is why this is the moment of truth — Through his own logic, Bush would be rendered irrelevant if the veto were to be overturned. This is the most obvious issue to start the snowball of legislative momentum and the onus of leadership in this country. The tipping point starts here imho.
Toby Wollin @ 51
Oh my, that is rich…
“Of serious concern, the law enforcement official said, was that the “investigative files in the [leak] case are the equivalent of raw intelligence files for someone like Gonzales.”
I doubt he thought of it either.
When are they going to call Addington and Fielding in to testify????
neokneme @ 55
I agree…coo coo…
LS @ 56
I’d like to amplify that:
“When are they going to call Addington and Fielding in to testify????”

They seem to be working their way up…next van..is Bradley (the secret torture memo author)…but do we have time? That is my question. Time is clearly of the essence with these clowns. I guarantee you, Comey and Goldsmith spilled their guts…but they better move now.

“President Bush personally intervened in spring 2006 to shut down that particular investigation by not allowing OPR investigators to be granted the necessary security clearances. Gonzales has told Congress that Bush consulted with him on the matter, and that Gonzales actually advocated that the security clearances be granted so the OPR probe could continue — but that Bush overrode that advice.”
Ding, ding, ding. We HAVE a winner!!!!! Direct, straight line.
GordonM @ 53
i’m having a hard time feeling bad about the delay. here’s hoping that the “restore act” dies and the holt bill is revived while someone helps the dems figure out a procedural strategy.
p.s. congrats to all who’ve worked on getting the votes for a schip override.
The terrorist surveillance program and the global war on terror need to recede into history with Bush.

tw3k @ 72
no way is Bush “receding” into history.
the ramifications of BushCo will resound for decades I fear.
Tim O @ 54
Pelosi said the other day it was at 13 votes needed. Since that time Ethridge and McIntyre have flipped, which should put it at 11.
We’re still a good ways away from override, but that wasn’t what this was about. It was about letting Democrats know that voting with George Bush 99% of the time, especially when it comes to something like this, is not acceptable for someone who calls himself a Democrat.
We’re tired of getting sold out by the so-called “centrists” listening to Rahm and Steny tell them how they have to vote with the Republicans in order to keep their seats. Rahm’s the same guy who said “don’t talk about the war” and almost led the entire party into a ditch in 2006.
No more. There’s a price for following that “wisdom.”
Elliott @ 67:
You rang!?
Hmmm.
Elliott @ 75
The ramifications of Bush’s policy will be with us for a long time, no doubt there.
selise @ 71:
Yes. As I EPU’d: “So RESTORE dies, evidently. So we revert to pre-PAA FISA status quo. How bad is that?”
RevDeb says she’d prefer a pre-PATRIOT FISA (and who wouldn’t?).
Hmmm.
No more. There’s a price for following that “wisdom.”
Preach it Jane!!!!
Yeah. The Global War on Terror needs to be outlawed as a basis for all of these stupid laws against the people. How on earth can legal experts support that or go along with it in any way. It is not a war, it is purely semantics in order for the neocons to wreak their havoc on the country and the world.
We need legislation that forbids the use of “The Homeland” in place of the United States of America.
This must stop. They are so dangerous, and they are almost getting away with it. It is the most important endeavor of our lifetimes. JMHO
OOOOH, OOOOH!

Excellent work firepups, Jane.
tw3k – it worked!
and better yet, dan of CapNews/politics.tv thinks he has the good video from the house floor and will check tomorrow – so there may be a much better youtube clip up tomorrow.
i’ll take mine down tomorrow if dan has a better clip…. but for now, my lame rip from the c-span webcast is up. so you can see rush holt this morning speaking on the house floor about the FISA “restore act” – he calls out the leadership for 1) not following through on promises made and 2) for supporting a bad bill.
i’ve probably been listening to way too much c-span… and i don’t recall that happening… usually i just here bs kabuki and spin when there’s a conflict.
and i’m way pysched that i can upload c-span clips.

RevDeb @ 82

Hmmm. @ 79
there’s still a few months to go before the PAA dies. and some of it’s affects probably won’t die until about the time bush leaves… but yeah, i think the conclusion with scarecrow this morning was that no bill was good.
i wouldn’t mind seeing a slightly improved holt bill though.
Just tuned into the Span and our Thirty-somethings are on the floor of the House doing their thing for SCHIP—Kendrick Meek, (FL) Debby W-S (FL), Tim Ryan OH), etc.
They have been great doing this off and on over time even before the d’s got the majority.

selise, good for you! I’m so impressed with your technical abilities. I look forward to seeing it later, and if you don’t mind, I’ll put it up later tonight and credit you.
Elliott @ 94
And they’re going fast. Doesn’t that make 13 who are either resigning or not running?
Oh well, the r’s are back on the House floor. Time to change the channel. Already heard the lying talking points today at Joe Pitts’ office. What a crock.
Could be leaving rats, or maybe nobody wants to be in Washington around election time.
selise @ 85
Excellent! Thanks for that clip selise. Holt is well spoken. We need more people like that!
Glad you can do screen caps now.

jeez, I don’t know the WHIP count. But thirteen is nice for a start!

Not nearly enough as far as I’m concerned.
selise – Thank you for the Holt youtube. I noticed just before the end Holt said his own leadership would try to stop him from talking on the floor further about his problems with Restore. wtf!
Jane Hamsher @ 76
OH JANE! I am so glad you see it that way, because that was my thought. The New Whips! Powerful. xxooo
RevDeb @ 97
Snort…pathetic lies. The Dalai Lama made a little comment about politicians that had passed on…that they tended to tell lies, little lies, and that he hoped they would move on…. in spite of them, because they had also worked hard for good things…something like that. He’s so cool.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOO HOO! A good day to remember for evah!
Loo Hoo. @ 95
be impressed with tw3k – i had some hand holding to figure out how to do it… and you should have seen my rube goldberg-type set up, lol: my ibook streaming c-span’s real player webcast, video out to my eyetv from ebay, to my imac’s HD. and that was just to get the video that had to be converted and uploaded!
the quality would be better if i had cable tv and could, therefore, have a good quality source instead of the real player webcast. but at this point, i’m just happy to have something!

Lou Dobbs has a commentary up over at CNN wondering if we can survive another 14/15 months of a BushCo presidency.
Great news and great effort by everybody. I agree with those who say that even if this veto is upheld, we’re onto something here. Seeing these guys flip was tangible proof. Take me (please). A few months ago, I started coming here to get early news on a Libby verdict. Now I’m contacting Reps., calling bullshit on my Senator in an LTE, learning alot about this issue to be able to call bullshit at all. Before you know it, I’ll be a godamned activist. I’m just much more engaged than I have been in a long, long time. I’m sure I’m not the only one – here and at other blogs. We really have something to build on and we are building on it.
For all that good stuff, if a bunch of kids still wind up without insurance, it’ll suck. But one way or another, there is no shortage of battles.
Lou Dobbs said that??? Hmmmm.
Anyway, here’s what my rep’s website posted last week:

I’m sure Jabba the Hut is just aching to spend more time with his family. /s
Since I live in Macon, I am compelled to correct what appears to be misinformation in this diary: Based on your links, it seems to me that Jim Marshall did not crawl into bed with Erick Erickson, a blogger from this same city. Erick Erickson was on local radio this a.m. taking calls from listeners about your ad that was run yesterday. As expected, most callers supported Jim’s position on S-CHIP.
Also, Eric Erickson is not the author of the Voter- ID Law. Cecil Staton, from Macon and a State legislator, authored the Voter ID Law, which has been condemned repeatedly by the paper, and by me in at least 2 published lte’s. Many others have done the same.
One thing Marshall is not, he is not imprudent. He has not made one imprudent move in all the time I have observed him. And, as noted in another diary a couple of days ago, he is not opposed to S-CHIP, just to the funding source and to the expanded coverage to higher income children, when not all the poorer ones are yet covered. This was part of his detailed written response to me when I challenged his “No” vote.
To answer a couple of comments: that picture is not of Jim Marshall. And the state Democratic party is still indeed dead and is in sore need of some charismatic and inspiring leadership. In the meantime, I am far more opposed to Marshall’s supporting the MCA of 2006 and related legislation, than I am to his no vote on S-CHIP.
Marshal far exceeds in brains, and integrity and knowledge what we previously had representing us: Lynn Westmoreland of Colbert/10 commandments infamy, and Saxby Chambliss prior to his successful Senatorial campaign in 2002.
I donated more money, but I am suspicious. At this late date, are some of these Bush Dogs just agreeing to vote the right way — because they know there are just enough votes to uphold the veto? (In other words, NOT enough good votes.)
It just seems suspicious to me, the day before the vote.
I really REALLY hope that tomorrow, the vote will go the right (I mean correct) way.
Meant to add this:
If the vote does NOT go the right way, we should keep this on the front burner from now until Nov. 2008. Every single F-ing day. I will contribute more money to do this, if needed.
I don;’t know will it really make a difference? I mean they are probably switching because they know it makes no difference at this point so they might as well get on the good side of the Dems in their districts. I mean everything I am hearing is that the overide ain’t gonna happen so they must figure…… I can’t take the heat so I’m outta da Kitchen! No harm no foul?
It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing vote Do wah do wah do wha! They are just posturing for the folks at home. Now they can say they had their epiphany on the road to Damascus as they troll for votes…BLeeccccch! The fact is Bush will keep his veto because there is a group of reps who are representing people who have no sense of being their brothers keeper or in this case a childs keeper. They suck and guess what they are going to get reelected because they kept those nast socialists out of our government especially those 12 year olds their the most dangerous because if you keep em healthy Hell they will grow up to be big socialists and eat more free food and want more free medicine!
Shell @ 126
Forget it Pelosi will take it off the table and go onto the next looser…SHE HAS NO GUTS TO TIE THIS PUNK BUSH UP FROM NOW UNTIL 1/20/09. NO GUTS!
Wow I can’t believe we got Etheridge too. Kudos to FDL and Blue Am.
Etheridge has about as much principle and backbone as a nightcrawler. He’s a safe district timeserver, and frequently on the wrong side of important votes. Can’t figure out why, as he’s never had a serious challenge from the other side. Once he was satisfied that there weren’t going to be enough Republican crossovers to override, so his vote didn’t matter, he flopped on over to keep the Dem leadership happy with him.
Almost every office in Etheridge’s district is held by Republicans. If Etheridge does not run again, you can be sure that his seat will be going Repub. He was our former rep–after NC got another cong. district, we now have Brad Miller who is terrific. Etheridge’s district is still very rural with a lot to tobacco being raised on farms.
Congress has written a bitter prescription to American children that should never be filled.
Congress has abandoned its promise to afford every citizen life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. When the wealthiest nation prioritizes excessive spending on a morally and fiscally bankrupt war in Iraq while the neediest children go without health insurance, we have forfeited our commitment to America.
According to a recent CBS News poll, 81% of Americans endorse this bipartisan legislation that would have preserved coverage for six million children currently covered by CHIP, extended coverage to nearly four million uninsured children, as well as ensured dental coverage and mental health parity. This fully funded bill would have allocated $100 million in grants for new outreach activities to states, local governments, schools, community-based organizations, and safety-net providers.
“The Bible teaches us that a new day will dawn when the ‘last will become first and the first will be last.’ Today, Congress and President Bush have banished our children and the underserved to the back of the line. We can and must do better.
The Congressional Black Caucus, 43 Members from 21 states, representing 40 million Americans, is resolute in our position to ensure health care for 10 million children and to protect the overall health and wellness of our most vulnerable citizens.
