It reminds me of a t.v. joke I liked. A White guy gets a ride with a workmate who is Black. during the ride the Black guy plays a tape (old joke) of a rap song that goes “Kill Whitey. Kill whitey.” The White guy asks the name of the song and the Black guy says, “Justice”.

What more could we ask of Justice than for the Rich criminals to all go bankrupt, be exposed for what they are in public and hear they’ve all gone the way of Kenny Boy Lay (saving us the money to incarcerate them)?

Anyway, there is a funny quote from back in the heady days of feminism that may have come from an early issue of MS magazine. I haven’t been able to find a cite. Anybody, please help! It is a wonderful put-down:

For the record, primate sexuality generally is pretty indiscriminate.

Which species of Primate are you referring to? Some are “indiscriminate” but others are not.

Within the apes you have some, like Bonobos, that have sexual activity without regard to sex and even maturity. There is one “taboo” though, mothers and sons have NEVER been seen to have sex with one another. The common chimp doesn’t have this widespread “indiscriminate” sexual behavior, however. Adult males will, however, mate with any female in estrous (other than their mothers, again…and since females emigrate…their sisters). But females definitely show preferences with specific males, running off with them during her peak estrous.

Gorillas are even more restrictive. Females usually mate exclusively with one adult male in the group. To the best of my knowledge, there is no report of “homosexual activity”, at least none that is widespread. And orangutans generally are “sexless” for years on end, until the female returns to estrous and seeks out the established dominant male. There have been cases of younger, wandering males forcibly copulating with females however. The females resist. Indiscriminate?

Then there are the Gibbon family, a cluster of some dozen different species, all of which are more or less monogamous, again with no observed homosexuality.

And such diversity is also apparent when we look at the other 200 species of Primates. There is heterogeneity, and to characterize them as having “indiscriminate sex” not only ignores this fact, but also all the research that indicates that females in many species are actually selective in opting for mating partners, and actually have evolved both physical and cooperative behavioral features to increase such selectivity. And the old “myth” that males are “indiscriminant” is also quite false.

Long ago, I read a book by primatologist Sarah Hrdy, The Woman that Never Evolved, that went into the mating proactices of roughly 300 species of primates. Among them are a number that are very monogamous. Others, like baboons, are harem oriented. IIRC, orangatans are loners who meet briefly in the forest and each go their own way. With others the whole colony goes into rutting season at the same time. The endless variety of evolved mating practices was truly amazing.
