It says:

Happy Weekend, everyone.

Evening all. Getting a bit nippy there in the Land of Dixie is it? Our highs have been in the 60s for the past several weeks, with lows in the upper 30s and lower 40s.

She’s putting up pictures of the Frost family’s cars now. I’m surprised she hasn’t posted their license plate numbers.

Hey ya’ll!
Just got home from work to find a kitteh thread, huzzah! Trouble is, I don’t have one any more. Working on the hubby, though, and perhaps a trip to the shelter is upcomming. I do have a cute puppy pic, though.
CTuttle @ 16

Hey, It does snow on the Big Isle…!!!
yellowdog jim @ 20
When I first started reading FDL, I thought Juan Carlos was TRex’s bf. Then, I thought he was his dog. Tonight I learn the truth!
Suzanne, I have been thinking all along that the weather at the lake is always temperate, the water just warm enough, and the company, exceptional.
Anyone else watching Maher?
Very cute! Was just thinking it was time to haul out my down blanket.
Of course my pooch, being a lab, is juuuuust fine in ice water. *I* am the one huddling in flannels!
CTuttle @ 24
I have seen it. Really a bit weird.
Suzanne,
I don’t know if you got the word, but on the “Who’s Making Peace in Your World?” thread on Wednesday afternoon, you and RBG were nominated for a peace prize by ET.
Sorry the Nobel folks didn’t get the word in time, but maybe next year.

Isn’t it interesting how often bigots are also chickenshits?
Vicente Fox was on satellite and he told a story how Bush claimed he couldn’t ride a horse because security wouldn’t allow it but he noticed Bush was a little afraid of the horse.
Paul Krugman, Tucker and Joy Behar are the guests.

CTuttle @ 38
Hey CT! I was beginning to think you were peeved at me since I decided to go with Cleveland over the Sox. Since I don’t have a dog in either fight, I’m just picking for fun. Besides, that Grady Sizemore is such a cutie-patootie.
ccmask @ 41
What did I just say? Bigots and chickenshits are like peaches and cream.

That, sir, is a vile statement to all lovers of peaches, cream, and the combination thereof.

CTuttle @ 55
What’s with the friday nite game? He does have a tendency to wildness, I’ve noticed.
RevDeb @ 51
Carlson says the Foster kid shouldn’t be a spokesperson. Assh*le has a long pink tie on. Krugman is trying to keep him in line. Tucker obviously hates the Foster kid.

Maher is wondering why Tucker isn’t upset about the missing $9 Billion which could overpay for the program.
Well we just went for a long walk and I almost found myself wanting a sweater. Ahhhh …. It might not get to 90 tomorrow.
katymine, I think about you so often. How are you doing, girlscout?
TexBetsy @ 70
I was wondering where you were. I have the munchies.
CTuttle @ 38
No way — to San Jose State???
ccmask @ 69
Obviously, it’s because Fucker Carlson is a hypocritical, self-promoting GOP mouthpiece. And he’s a jerk, too. But I repeat myself.
ccmask @ 70
And from him we hear crickets—he needs to get back to demonizing a 12 year old instead. Then he turns to Clinton to change the subject but the others aren’t having it.
Chris Van Holland was just on GPB (channel 9 around here) talking about overriding the veto. He covered all the ground…and he covered it very clearly. He talked about the program, he talked about how it would be paid for, and he talked about all the misinformation that kept popping up (he said it was like playing whack-a-mole. He urged people to get the FACTS. I was impressed. I haven’t heard a congress member sound this lucid in years. He did, however minimize the bush dogs. I’m not sure how I feel about that. Maybe he thinks we’re doing just fine :). His interviewer (didn’t get a name) asked him if the president wasn’t trying to put a stop to universal health care. He said the country needed universal health care. *grin* He also seemed to enjoy talking about Grendal(?) of Louisiana, who, it seems, has had a come to Jesus moment too…Louisiana, Katrina, both he and the interviewer got a little snarky about that part, I thought.
Earlier today, I talked to an aide in one of the local offices of my Congressman, who gave e two pieces of misinformation, which I’d already seen on the congressman’s page. One was the canard about the $83,000 households getting coverage for their kids. I called him on that and asked if he would be open to seeing new information. He said, of course. From a reputable source.
Jane, bless her, gave me this link, and it was excellent. Thank you, Jane. I called the aide back and let him know to expect a fax. He got seven pages, and I hope he reads them. He can’t fault the sources. Well, being who he is, I suppose he can, but he’ll be lying if he does. I plan to follow up tomorrow.
peanutbutter @ 66

Naomi Klein now on Maher. F*cker is SO outclassed on tonight’s show.
Just a WAG, but I would guess that there could be at least a thousand kids (maybe a couple of thousand) in my district who would benefit from expanded SCHIP. Next door in Loretta Sanchez’ district, several thousand.
So, did I miss any Fri night news dumping?
RevDeb @ 87
To be fair, Tucker would have a hard time holding his own in a pre-school circle time.
burnspbesq @ 89
Do their parents vote?

At least half the kids in my state would benefit. I am actually kind of proud of my senior senator for a change.

In the special ed class.
RevDeb @ 86
But does he realize he’s getting punked? It would be more fun to watch the look on his face as he gets his rhetorical ass handed to him. Just like Jon Stewart did.

OT, but I snuck out of work early and spent a couple of hours here this afternoon. Stopped at the fish market and picked up dinner.

Some days I envy you.
ccmask @ 104
More or fewer than we are?
When I was in Crete, looking down into the harbor bay from my hotel balcony, every roof had a solar water heater including my own hotel room. The brand name of those that I could read said names like Creta Sun and those homes that did not have solar water heaters had big black plastic water tanks on the roofs for the heat gain.
Solar water heaters were everywhere when I lived on Crete 30 years ago. The issue is that power has been on a whole cheap for Americans so there has been NO drive to push us in this direction.
TexBetsy @ 106
Wait a couple of weeks until winter gets here.
Dr.Dick–I love that gray cat. Can I have it?
ccmask @ 65
Bleergh! Wrote HBO that I have to leave my favorite Friday show for crap t.v. because I can’t abide TCarlson. He makes me say terrible things.
ccmask @ 110
No. She is currently attached to my feet, living up to her appelation. Her name is Smoke and she just sort of moved in on me a year ago (actually almost beat down the back door to it).
ccmask @ 104
As if the Iraqis need them. I seem to recall a HUGE ammo depot that we left unguarded when we invaded. It was picked clean. There was probably enough explosive materials there to keep up the current pace of bombings and IED’s for decades without Iraqis having to import anything.
Beautiful!! Maher said if our troops are so great, why do we need Blackwater. And Joy says “Yeah, and if we need 1,000 Blackwater guys to guard all the diplomats, where is all the diplomacy?”
ccmask @ 114
Has Tucker’s head exploded yet?
DrDick @ 113
Is her tail black? She looks like she is a real snuggler.
RevDeb @ 113
Just stop it with this logic and reason-you know it makes the goopers heads explode!
RevDeb @ 87
She was excellent and I only have one word for Tucker Carlson and that word is “TOOL”.
Bailey (named in honor of her ability to take foot bail at every opportunity) is quite miffed at me for letting it rain today. It is all my fault, of course.
ccmask @ 116
Nope, she is all gray and white.
Gore’s Nobel Prize has the Reichwing’s heads imploding…!!! ;-)
DrDick @ 116
No, but he has Krugman talking to himself. Tucker wants Blackwater there BIG TIME. He is really sticking up for them.

I’ve been reading, and listening to Air America today, about the potential for Gore making a run for the presidency…
I dunno… I wonder how much more the U.S. would gain from having Gore appointed to the U.N.? could it be Sec-General Gore?… why keep all the good ones to yourselves? I think the world would benefit greatly… and it would be an even larger stage for Gore…

I came in late, but from what I saw Tucker totally dominated the conversation, and nobody was able to shut him up. I was shouting, “Jon Stewart, where are you when we need you?”
Marher was the quietest I’ve ever seen him. Tucker ran right over Krugman. And the lady comedian had almost nothing to say. It was very frustrating.
Dan in Canada @ 145
good point. And, I don’t think Gore’s gonna run anyway. Put out a challenge for cash money bets on this at FDL, a while back. Betting is closed now. I think Gore is done with parochial politics (as in running for Pres) and can do much more good in a more global venue. Hence, we agree.
Lindy, that sometimes happens to me as well-it’s that my computer is so old and comparatively slow. Check how full your HD is. That’s when mine started acting weird…Try dumping your cache, and retry. Sometimes helps for me.

Mom sent me an email today with a pic of 3 of her 5 kittehs frolicking in a fridge box. Between the big box, the styrofoam and packing peanuts, it’s a mess. The kittehs are enjoying it though. Since today is laundry day and she washed the towels they like to sleep on, she left the box for them. Otherwise, they pace and yowl around the washer and dryer until the towels are washed, dried and returned to their rightful places.
yellowdog jim @ 170
I have pulled 24″ fish out of the same area. Have to throw them back, however (it’s the law here).

It is actually a rightard “debating” technique. If you never shut up, then your opponent cannot prove what a brainless piece of shit you are.

Evidently Tucker has never read Mark Twain “better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt”.

it’s the filibuster ploy.

The downside: neither does he need to.
marymccurnin @ 181
But he thinks himself a stud.
He’s hurting America. Jon told him to STFU but he didn’t get it.
RonD @ 167
RonD, thanks for the input. I don’t think it’s that, though I may be wrong. I have 165 gb hard drive that’s maybe 40% full, and a gig of ram. I run all the usual diagnostics (not the complicated stuff that the mechanics do), just the basics. I defrag, and I empty my cache about twice a week. I guess I’ll need to find a mechanic who needs some photography or some lighting fixtures *g*.

Yep. No minimum size limit, but a variable upper size limit. On the Clark Fork River, where I was fishing the rule is nothing over 15″. On the Bitterroot River, which joins it a short way from where I was, it is only one fish over 14″. Three trout limit per day on both rivers. There are general regs and then a lot of special rules for most of the bigger rivers. This is what happens when wildlife biologists set your fish and game regs. It really makes since and is why we still have really big trout. In Colorado, they rarely catch anything over 8-10 inches. Natural selection at work. If you take all the big fish out of the gene pool, all you get are the runts.
Prairie Sunshine @ 162
They are children of rich people, very rich people. Every time someone buys a Swanson frozen dinner, Tucker gets a new bowtie. Every time someone buys a car with a light-up vanity mirror, Erik Prince gets a royalty.

expect texbetsy and me soon.
marymccurnin @ 181
I didn’t see it but he seems to me to always use the adolescent bully strategy of debating by filling the air with his noise.
BTW wigwam. I’ve never been that impressed with Maher. It must be me.
Why is it that a dog that is the same color of the wall to wall carpeting will choose to nap instead on the burgundy oriental rug?
It is chilly here in norcali tonite. I had two kitties and two pups on the futon with me this evening. The old cat, Ariel still hates the new cat and had her head peeking over the comforter with her ears down. She radiated hatred. Benny The New Cat left. Ariel relaxed into her victory once again over the mundane and tedious.

Nite, Ma’am!!!

And perhaps a 16 yr old brand new driver.
Rush Limpbags auctions Harry Reids letter on ebay. Auction here. 55 bids and it is up to 15 grand.
TeddySanFran @ 207
Well Teddy, that’s not me thank goodness. No Swanson dinner, ever. Only really awesome linguini with fresh pesto from my garden. Yum.
madmommy @ 217
Spread the wealth…??? ;-)
madmommy @ 218
The dog knows it looks better when set against a contrasting color?
ccmask @ 221
any chance he’ll send the money to an SCHIP kid?
DrDick @ 177
What’s the ‘keep’ law????
LoudounLib @ 204
I remember that! (It play about half the clip. Thanks for the link.
ccmask @ 222
A fool and his money are soon parted.
marymccurnin @ 218
I’m in NorCal too MM, turned the heater on for the first time this fall. Brrr. Send Benny over here.
TexBetsy @ 220
Dear God! As though we didn’t have enough problems with our own 14 year old learners’ permits.
madmommy @ 185
Gotta love this:
“No clear way out”??? General, you can go out exactly the way you went in. But if that seems too dangerous, you can go north through Kurdistan and Turkey (assuming you don’t insult the Turks over things that happened a century ago).= But, if we insist on insulting the Turks, we can go west through the now-friendly Anbar and then Saudi Arabia and/or Jordan and Israel. General, there are lots of ways out.
DrDick @ 206
They do the same think on Lake Okeechobee. It’s so hard to catch the bigger ones too. They seem to hang out at the locks. I get really lucky there. And there is a great restaurant a couple of miles away that cooks your catch and gives you a great salad, hush puppies and cole slaw for $7.00 a plate. And, they have oysters on the half shell for a quarter apiece.
peanutbutter @ 210
i liked this one.
“i think i broke it.”
LoudounLib @ 225
She does really pop against the burgundy. Still, now there will be a dog hair spot I’ll need to carpet flick before the morning. She’s supposed to stay on the tile, but I am a mushball.
TexBetsy @ 208
As soon as you start dressing your animals, they start feeling special. As if they weren’t special already. Our cats sleep all the time, so they don’t need to get dressed. And Strider the Alaska mutt prefers going around unclothed. We do have a pack for him to carry his own dogfood when we go hiking, though.
TeddySanFran @ 207
Isn’t it the Swanson pot pies that are making people sick and had to be recalled?
ccmask @ 231
Yum. That sounds really good.
Betsy, my niece is right behind Snarky — she’ll be getting her learner’s soon and she is so jonesing for it *g* And there’s a beat-up 1990 Volvo wagon awaiting her in my sister’s driveway.

wigwam @ 230
Wigwam, that would be Casey’s words wouldn’t it…??? Now, where was his infinite wisdom prior to the surge…???
do-si-do @ 217
Tonight must have been his off night because Tucker was the one filling the air with noise. IMHO, Maher has some good moments, but he’s not in the same league as Stewardt and Colbert.
do-si-do @ 226
It seems he is doing it for charity. From the auction:
The Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation encourages the spiritual, moral and intellectual development of children through education. The Foundation was formed in February 1995, by former Marines and law enforcement personnel who strongly believe that our nation’s most precious resource is its youth.
wigwam @ 241
Maher doesn’t even know how to take control back from a sucker like Tuckery.
the only way limpballs would send that money to an schip kid was if it was guaranteed to knock the kid off the eligibility list
Suzanne @ 244
Or if karl told him to.
Suzanne @ 244
Or if it would somehow score him some Oxcie.
marymccurnin @ 244
I agree. Maher let him take over. Maybe he figured his end is near anyway. Hide the scuba gear.
Suzanne @ 243
Well, there is that trip to the Dominican Republic with the guys, if you recall.

Well, I gotta turn in. See you guys tomorrow night! CUBY

Cuties! Love the look on Max’s face, that’s priceless.
Sounds like Tucker got into Ann Coulter’s bag of blow before he went on stage.

DrDick @ 150
thanks for asking. no, not camping. i’ve been following my sufi teacher around who’s visiting from jerusalem. when he was in the austin area i was responsible for the food for the event. hard work, but people were ecstatic with the food. and i had the caterer make it so delicious that no one noticed it was actually healthy food. then off to a farm in western pennsylvania called the farm of peace. then up in the napa area. i’m home for another few days before i’m off to year 3 of healing school. they’ll have to pry me loose when i get home at the end of october if anyone should want me to go anywhere. except, of course, for the delicious prospect of camping with the central texas firepups the first weekend in november.

if only they could have tranquilizer-darted him.
This is weird. I’m reading through comments and after a refresh the print suddenly got much smaller. It’s not that way anywhere else, just here all the sudden.
wigwam @ 255
Casey has recently reiterated the same… The Marines are now saying; “…give us Afghanistan…!!!” WTF???
Sandman @ 266
Not to mention the mountains in this area. Have a fair number who either run into the side of a mountain or off the side of it (can be a long way down).
Loo Hoo. @ 270
Run it again tomorrow morning. I think the results would be different.
Not a cat, but my wife’s daschhund, which Snarkassandra so nicely posted.

My back did not survive this week, but otheriwse it’s been good. Doing a lot of work with new teachers this year and a lot less of the on-call testing that I hated. So yes, it’s been good. Also jobs 2 and 3 and the tutoring and the news network. It’s the parenting that’s been driving me nuts!
RonD @ 277
Awww, what a face! Totally cute.
greenwarrior @ 276
And this is one of the best times of year for fishing. Especially since all the tourists are gone. ;~)
ccmask @ 248
Four times, Tucker yelled, “We need Blackwater in Iraq because the U.S. military won’t protect newsmen and diplomats.” And nobody said, “Whose fault is that?”
The U.S. military will protect whomever they are ordered to protect. Given Blackwater pay, they’d do it with an intense smile. WTF???
Loo Hoo. @ 279

My ex had a tee shirt that said, “Insanity is hereditary, you get it from your kids.” Always liked that one.
TexBetsy @ 285
Are you using firefox? You might have hit control- minus. Try control- plus to see if that helps…
TexBetsy @ 285
Tried that first, but no luck. Just logged completely off and now it is back to normal. If I were paranoid…..

Jon Stewart is so good at such things that it scares me. He doesn’t even have to shout. He has effortlessly made a fool of the other person before they finish their sentence. And he can do it with a mere facial expression. Wow!
greenwarrior @ 289
Great!
the plus sign gets stripped out by the WP software in comments…
madmommy @ 125
She updates her status on facebook regularly — looks like she’s busy…
wigwam @ 294
I think Maher is trying to think while the other person is talking. Like chewing gum and walking at the same time.
yellowdog jim @ 183
montana? yes, i’ve never been there. count me in for something in the way of 75 degree days. when’s a good time to have us descend upon you dr. dick?
RonD @ 277
So cute!
LoudounLib @ 264
Max is my 10 year-old’s cat and I think he wins the award for stupidest and loudest cat EVAH. Of course, he also lets A carry him around like a stuffed animal and allows himself to be used like a pillow, so the boy-o loves him.
Heh. A was threatening to turn him into cat treats for Rainy today. The cat will seriously not shut up, ever.
wigwam @ 294
I noticed that facial expression thing in the Crossfire YouTube that was posted here earlier. At one point he had this look on his face that was somewhere between sympathetic that he was listening to an imbecile, and incredulous at what that imbecile was saying.
greenwarrior @ 297
Well, if you want 75 degree days, probably next May. We are in the 50s-60s these days and unlikely to get any warmer before spring.
Suzanne @ 294
Sometimes… depends how it’s used…!!! ;-)
Thanks Loo. Snarkita has a whole page of incredibly cute animal pix here.
Well, I think I will head out. Going to the farmer’s market in the morning (world’s best organic heirloom tomatoes) and hiking in the Bitterrots in the afternoon. Take care and enjoy the snark.
Complicated family.
Future puppy-in-law.
My nephew-cat Oliver.
DrDick @ 306

DrDick,

They’re back — but I swear to ghod that for a few minutes this thread stopped at comment 305!
Shuffling off to the new thread…
RonD @ 329
not yet apparently
Loo Hoo. @ 327
IIRC, RonD has a lot more to say about this matter — very good stuff.
TRex @ 265
Both Coulter and Carlson should be totally ignored by the left. Please, TRex, don’t give them any more of your time and effort. They both deserve nothing more than NOTHING.

Am I here? Or am I at late-late night? What year is this?
Ed*ard Teller @ 342
ET, well you should be at Late Late NIte. Have you had problems? I have not, alas.
wigwam @ 284
nd Poland and several of these other diplomatic missions have their own troops in Iraq. Why aren’t THEY protecting their own missions? Why do we have to cover the costs through US dollars to protect FOREIGN DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS.
Oh right, one of the Neo-Con talking points is how many embassies have returned to Iraq…and if those missions withdrew…because of the DANGER…that would imply that things are actually sh*t security-wise in Baghdad. So USAID offers them FREE SECURITY with these mercenary guys who “shoot first, and don’t have to ask questions later”.
Even the Marines would have to answer for such acts. That’s why Blackwater was called in…they are lawless.
And the Marines are telling us that they no longer want to be involved in a “No-Win War”. That’s why they want to be deployed to Afghanistan, and leave the “lost war” in Iraq for it to be blamed on the Army.
Funny photo, TRex. I thought the cats allowed us in their lives because we’re the ones with the can openers.
Good morning, pups. Today in the NYT we have TOMC and Bob Herbert. TOMC typed something she calls “The Campaign-So-Far Quiz.” Mr. Herbert reminds us that although Al Gore is much more competant and much better qualified to run the country it’s W who’s actually in the White House.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got a cinnamon streusel coffee cake with pecans. (Well, she temporized, it’s healthier than a box of Krispy Kreme donuts…)
I note that Hillary has picked up an endorsement from Charles Krauthammer. All I have to say is that if Cabbagemallet is for her that’s just one more reason to be VERY, VERY, VERY cautious…
I’m loving TRex’s picture of Juan Carlos. It belongs on I Can Has Cheezburger, where I go for a daily giggle.
TOPOFF 4 and Vigilant Shield 08: Nuclear Dictatorship: The Portland Plan
http://www.amfirstbooks.com/In….._Plan.html
Captain May is a former Army military intelligence and public affairs officer, as well as a former NBC editorial writer. His political and military analyses have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Houston Chronicle and Military Intelligence Magazine. He is the leader of the Portland Nuclear Inquest, a group of concerned citizens monitoring and discussing the TOPOFF / Vigilant Shield terror exercises. Interested readers can join at: http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/gro…..r-Inquest.
It’s hard to know what’s scarier: the idea of responding to a terrorist attack in Portland or the idea that the government is using a drill as a pretext to seize power, declare martial law and, possibly, attack Iran. –”Different shades of unthinkable” — Editorial, The Oregonian, Oct. 2, 2007
http://luminaria.wordpress.com…..tatorship/
News – TOPOFF 4 (short for “top officials”) is an exercise that simulates (we hope) the detonation of a “dirty bomb” near Portland’s Steel Bridge. Vigilant Shield 08 simulates (we hope) imposition of martial law to control the civilian population in the aftermath of the radiological event.
http://news.propeller.com/stor…..ish-fringe
http://www.freepressinternational.com/?p=318
http://mikeinmanila.info/?p=91
On September 11th 2001, several military drills were taking place that removed vital air defenses from the area and caused confusion as the exercises went “live”. In London on July 7th, 2005, Visor Corporation was conducting drills of the exact events that transpired that day, in the same locations at the same time. On October 15th, NORTHCOM is engaging in another drill. This time simulating a “dirty” bomb and the implementation of Martial Law in Portland, Oregon. Only our awareness of the plan can stop them, just like it stopped them in Charleston in August 2005.
http://www.opednews.com/articl….._3a_aw.htm
It is vital that we all become aware of the fact that, six years ago, numerous civil and military exercises set the stage for the “live” events that occurred on September 11, 2001. That is, some of the drills before and during 9/11 simulated the actual events that took place on that day, including a plane-into-building exercise and a live-fly hijacking. This “coincidence” (assuming one is a coincidence theorist) caused an intentional paralysis or defacto stand down of our forces. Unless you believe in astronomical improbabilities, it is impossible that the “live” events simulated by these drills were a mere coincidence and not connected in any way to the drills’ planning and execution. (It is important to note that a simulation of the exact bombings that occurred in London on July 7, 2005 was underway just before the live “terrorist” events took place.)
