Mahmoud Ahmadinejad faced appropriate scorn when he told that audience at Columbia that “we don’t have homosexuals in this country … we don’t have this phenomenon.” Now he’s saying that he was the victim of bad translating, and that he meant to say that “compared to American society, we don’t have many homosexuals.” Like so many other politicians, he sent his press person out to make the excuses.
It’s far more important to focus on what is done to gays in Iran than it is to parse Ahmadinejad’s words – especially since as President he has relatively little executive power. Both he and the ayatollahs who really run Iran continue to do terrible things, including the public execution of two gay teenagers in 2005.
That’s why the “Invention of an Anti-Christ,” as John Stokes calls the demonization of Ahmadinejad, is such a tragic error. There is an active democratic movement in Iran, an active underground — and real live gay people. From the Times:
Tehran has several famous areas, like Karim-Khan Street, or Mellat, Laleh and Daneshjoo parks, where gays meet and where gay prostitutes seek customers. “It does not take them even 10 minutes to get picked up,” said Amir, 24, a graphic designer who is gay. “There are men from every class,” he said. “Some of them are bisexual and call it being naughty.”
The demonization of a man who is relatively unpopular, and who holds very little real power, only serves to increase his popularity and weaken the nascent democratic and civil rights movements.
In fact, Middle East analysts like Juan Cole believe that Bush’s public statements helped Ahmadinejad win his initial surprise victory over more moderate opponents. Cole said at the time that “it seems most likely that Bush administration pressure on Iran, naming it as an axis of evil, making clear a desire to overthrow its government, and militarily surrounding it in Afghanistan and Iraq, pushed the Iranian electorate to the right.”
Ahmadinejad does, of course, make a perfect foil the American Right’s claim of an “existential threat” to our way of life – a claim used to justify the ongoing abrogation of our own civil rights in the name of national security. Not that we’re necessarily thinking conspiratorially – but it certainly gives them no reason to worry that their propaganda blitz might in fact be helping the career of an odious man.
And it’s not like the American Right is going to go toe-to-toe with Ahmadinejad over gay rights. After all, they’re in basic agreement about homosexuality. So the job is left instead to comedians and singers like those in the SNL video clip up above (including Maroon 5’s Adam Levine).
“You be the Jews and I’ll be your Jim Caviezel,” the song says. Sounds like the relationship between conservatives and Ahmadinejad, especially as we learn of Ann Coulter’s latest outburst. Jews need to be “perfected,” says Ann, and this would be a better country if everyone were Christian.
The Right and Mahmoud – they were made for each other.

Steve AR, you rascal!
Wow, the Lake is a’roil with post after post…!!!
Information overload today at FDL.
Here
CTuttle @ 3
I haven’t had time to catch my breath today. Everything sorts quiets down and then someone posts a real piece of red meat and we’re off and running again.
So, does the Iranian president have the same difficulty with his native language that the so-called American president has with his?
Great post RJ
Loo Hoo, it’s all your fault. You and Taylor Marsh are dragging me over to the dark-side.
RJ, Excellent Post! A minor quibble, the Baha’i’s plight was the preface question… I’m a Baha’i, and very aware of Iran’s persecution of them… Everyone has omitted that part of the discourse…!!! 8-(
Steve-AR @ 9
Strong medicine, Steve! Needs to be done.
Loo Hoo. @ 11
No! …Not the Kool-Aid!!! ;-)

Please educate us.
Barack Obama is denouncing the Senate vote in
favor of the Kyl-Lieberman resolution condemning Iran, saying that it could lay the groundwork for Bush-Cheney to take the US to war against that country. He is critical of Hillary Clinton for voting for it.
The impression is that Muslims merely replaced the commies as the bad guys. Many Americans, and most particularly, politicians, have a need to hate someone. Someone to fear and direct their anger toward. Muslims fit the requirement. Oh… and it doesn’t hurt that there is a huge amount of oil in Iraq and Iran.
And as to Iran? We’ve manipulating the Iranians since at least the time we installed the Peacock Throne.
He’s not more a nut case than our very own shrub when you listen to them rant.
Iran could have mother theresa as pres and she would spun like the witches of salem.
Perhaps we (the United States) should try something novel. Like staying out of other people’s business.
Many say that George W. Bush is the most dangerous man on the planet.
Loo Hoo. @ 13
Oof! Every National Spiritual Assembly member has been summarily executed, it is literally a self-martyrdom…!!! 8-(
Oklahoma kiddo @ 18
Many would agree with them !
SanderO @ 16
Same rhetoric – different religions. Its a centuries-old theme. For Bushco and the Pioneers its an excuse to bankrupt the treasury, line oil barons’ pockets and pillage other peoples’oil.
It’s interesting that Russia has stopped doing regime change. But we’re still doing the same old regime change thing.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 15
No doubt. I remember at the time of I’madickwad’s “election” there were many claims of vote tampering. Is it a stretch to think the CIA or some sort of Neocon-backed outfit made sure Mackmood. Always gotta have a boogeyman or two for their plans. Perpetual war means perpetual profits after all… http://www.warisaracket.com
Okie, I don’t think it’s that many americans need to hate someone. It’s more an insecurity complex which is manifest as condescension and contempt.
Americans think they live in the center of the universe and anyone who doesn’t do what they do, or aspire to do what they do is a loser, sub human, misfit, throw away consumer of resources which should be there for him and his family and friends.
But most Americans are woefully ignorant about the rest of the world. Didn’t you love the put down of “old Europe”? Jeeze the EU is waaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of the USA in quality of life. Their cities are beautiful, their food is great, their trains are wonderful, their scenery is spectacular… really what’s not to like? I forgot… Taco Bell, MickeyD’s Circuit City, Block Buster, Nascar, Harley Choppers and rods. My bad….
Oklahoma kiddo @ 17
Since China has all the American dollars that Haliburton doesn’t have, how do we negotiate for the same oil China covets?
Russia is cool with oil and gas now… the hot reasons to invade and set up puppet shows… So they are sitting pat now.
hackworth @ 25
We don’t. We occupy Iraq and attack Iran instead. *g*
But seriously if we got out of Iraq and Afghanistan we could save $12,000,000,000 per month. That is not chump change in this house. ;0)
Oklahoma kiddo @ 27
Brother can you spare a billion?
“chump change”
LOL

What happened to the idea of organizing?
Loo Hoo. @ 30
I thought you were boycotting our strike?
SanderO @ 24
Old Europe has made advances in health, science and technology while Bush set us back ten years by kowtowing to Pat Robertson and crony capitalists. Old Europe is not eating Genetically Modified foods and using toxic products like the US. One of the benefits of National Heath Care is that a nation has to maintain a keen interest in the health of its citizens in order to manage costs.
In the US, you are on your own. As such, they will poison your ass to make a buck.

Every word of it is true.
And who can say whether Ahmadinejad is not an assisted creation of the American Right?
After all, many of the same players on both sides were quite happy to do business together over two decades ago.
Whatever benefits both parties now might well be viewed with suspicion.
…Or not, if you’re allergic to tinfoil
;>)
Eureka Springs,
I am not afraid. I am suggesting that we would do far better with a march than a strike.
Loo Hoo, I think it will take a lot of both. But the strike means we are serious.. Shut it down folks.. they need us and our money more than you think.
OMG, people are afraid to comment?
Loo Hoo. @ 39
We’ve been snatched by HLS. Please send us beer.

my Iranian students have told me that they don’t believe Iran-shrub would ever had been elected had there not been a frenzy of anti-American fear.. he promised to stand up to us. This being said, they also seem to feel that he does have real power and influence.. that he’s not just a figurehead to the ayatollahs, no matter what constitutional limitatons appear to limit his de jure authority. He has credibility with the elders, and that makes him powerful.

I can understand that.

It’s easy for Obama to be critical when he couldn’t be bothered to show up and vote.

A couple are actually incredible well connected, or so it seems. In any case, precisely because its byzantine and confusing, I trust them a lot more than I trust our pundits and supposed shrubco experts in explaining their country’s politics to me.

its actually interesting.. the Iranians I know are very critical of theocracy and the current state of their country.. they’re at least as angry as we are. But if you scratch the skin of their belief systems, they’re also very patriotic. I’ve heard over and over again, that they believe their country is entitled to nukes as much as anyone in the “club” is, and they support the nuke program, even if they don’t support their president. They see what we’re about as being mostly plain old fashioned resource imperialism. I don’t know how widely held these views are, but there seems to be a theme among those I’ve met.
Steve-AR @ 65
Shellvote. He learned under Lieberman’s tutelage. I’m still trying not to think the worst: that he’s HoJoe Lite.
The only candidate still in congress who seems to be on the straight and narrow vote wise with the exception of Kucinich (and how on earth can we sell him) is Dodd.

We don’t negotiate. And, we don’t care if China and anyone else wants to fight or spend for oil. We let OIL be their downfall . . . meanwhile, back at teh ranch of usa . .
We tuck in, save money, and develop our OWN energy supplies, and alternative energy sources. We become self reliant, and not dependant/
Oh, that would mean, end of the oilagarchy and big biz and our war machine . . . hey, we got enuff nukes and delivery systems, I’m kewl for a generation or so with what we have . . . no one’s gonna attack us and we could waste them if they did . . . for another generation we could waste ANYONE who dared attack us.
N so there’s yer fear of invasion countered, there’s yer wasted lives and capital countered, there’s yer moral compass and the reemergence of the USA and its middle class.
Education, housing, science, jobs . . . . all that stuff we used to have . . . that made us feel we WERE great (despite our despicapble foreign interventions) . . .

If you like disappointment, become a Leafs’ fan … *g* … they did beat the Isles 8-1 tonight.
On the “strike vs. protest” question, I think it would be far easier to motivate for a weekend protest…and a successful, massive protest would lay the groundwork for a far more successful strike than a strike by itself, IMO…..But, hell, I’ll support whichever I can get to. Or, hell, as I said before-BOTH.
Should “to ur way of life” be “to our way of life”?
Or has that been pointed out a bezillion times already?

They are SO not kewl with usa ingerfering in their ME deals with pipelines, and such.
We burned Russia, China and Germany in Afghanistan when the Taliban told us, NO DEAL!!! And signed with Russia, China, and Germany for a gas pipeline thru Afghan.
Cheney was the front man at the time, ‘98 I believe?
Then came 9/11, and we WASTED any chance of that pipeline being built.
And now Russia, China, India, Iran, Turkey and a few others have GREAT deals in place, for oil AND gas pipelines.
Hell, Isreal gets it gas from Russia, thru Turkey, if I’m not mistaken??????
And the USA is bound and determined to screw up them deals . . . other than the one’s with Isreal, that is.
Let’s talk international resources and politics and war!!!!
And let’s shut down the pathetic oilagarchy we are and save our constitution and make the masses the savior of our future . . . for the common good . . .
Oh, then I woke up . . . ;-)

Actually, as Al Gore keeps on pointing out (especially in recent speeches), the Chinese may just be on the path to weaning themselves off oil faster or at least becoming much more oil efficient than we can (coal is another matter altogether.. neither country is going to get off that diet anytime ever). Oil efficiency and alternative energy are very high on the Chinese list of policy priorities, while our shrubocracy is still sabotaging all the alternatives while half heartedly promoting the scam that is ethanol.

As I listened to Hillary on Countdown with KO, I was lulled into a false sense of security by hearing someone with a brain who can articulate thoughts and ideas. It really does give one a feeling of calmness to listen to a leader speak actual words and sentences. You know what I mean?
Loo Hoo. @ 104
Yep. Use the protest to build momentum and announce the strike to largest possible, most highly motivated people.
It is very likely that if Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were to resign as President of Iran tomorrow the American We Hate Evil Iran Warmongers Club would put a “evil spin” on his having done so.
Within hours of President Ahmadinejad stepping down the American We Hate Evil Iran Warmongers Club would be fully suggesting Mahmoud did it because he was trying to trick or fool the Americans over his Evil Intentions.
Of course the American We Hate Evil Iran Warmongers Club would surely proceed to find some other Iranian Devil to mount another angle of attack on. No doubt there must be at least a dozen Iranians in positions of power and authority who qualify as being Evil Iranians.
As for all the furor over Iranian gays being treated badly by ruthless Iranian Evil Leaders it would be refreshing to first review once again just how American gays tend to fare in many smaller American cities, towns and rural areas where the cloak of American Metropolitanism is not readily available to duck behind.
The Americans hardly are in a position to be casting Iran into the Fiery Pit of Hellfire.
Try getting into the American Armed Forces as a openly gay person and see how that works out.
At least Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was willing to face a hostile crowd and endure some very direct attacks from the “hosts” of his visit to Columbia.
The American President,George Bush, pretty much avoids hostile crowds or simply has his goons screen and remove those who might ask or say the wrong thing and put him on the spot.
I do think George Bush should go to Iran and see and talk with Iranians. George Bush should go to an Iranian University and give a speech.
His remarks subject to translation and hostile press distortion.
George Bush most often is given some very wide and deep passes by the American Press which seems more an instrument of State Propaganda then anything that could be called free and critically objective.
I do think the American We Hate Evil Iran Warmongers Club would surely resist George Bush going to Iran being doing so would poke lots of big holes in that club’s Iran Is Evil demonization of Iran mantras.
A great leader would go to Iran and not be afraid to stand up in front of Iranian students and state his positions and take open questions if he truly felt they were correct.
At least Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was willing to do so. You may not like him or agree with him but he did do it.
George Bush seldom lets Americans( let Iranians do this?!?) who do not like him or his ideas get anywhere near/close to one of his ‘Potemkin’ open/public staged events.
Some ‘great leader’ George Bush has proved to be with his hollow bravado of being ‘The Decider’ and a ‘War President’.
President Ahmadinejad despite the hostile reception waiting for him went into the Lions Den and for doing so got mauled repeatedly.
George Bush? He only goes into Sheep Pens.
The Americans do not have a great leader these days.
WashDC has become a nest of short sighted, avarice laced, warmongering, ignorant serial lie tellers.
George Bush fits into this WashDC very well.

Loo Hoo. @ 37
Hmmm . . . . why? Really curious where this thought train comes from . . . why a march, instead of a strike?
Are we not past the point of unsucessful protest?
Really want your thoughts on this, as I have none on them, and could use the input.
Thanks in advance . . . you ARE eloquent and thoughtful . . . I just have no info to convince me we should continue passive resistance v. work strikes and stoppages . . . and I KNOW that will escalate things in general, but compared to what we are losing, daily?
Horribly?
If Blackwater is booted outta State Dept, and Iraq, where do you THINK they are gonna get deployed, and CONTCACTED by USA, to station next?
I’d like to think Afghanistan, but, I fear our homeland.
180,000 Blackwater troops, redeployed and ouut of work, here in our USA.
Hmmm? Passive? Where do we resist, more ‘firmly’ beyond a passive weekend demonstration? Before it’s all gone?
Of such stuff is our dialogue . . . thanks FDL and the blogosphere . . .

An Iranian friend of mine stated after Ahmadinejad’s comments that he understood him to say they don’t have a homosexual “culture” in Iran, not homosexuals per se. Having lived in the Middle East, he is correct as their definition of being a homosexual is quite a bit different than ours and will in no way ever progress to a cultural acceptance of equality for the homosexual community.

2) Why would the Chinese have any anxiety upon the holding of our debt? Will that debt failing, cause THEM to lose in any way? I am NOT an econ . . . that’s why I ask. Ya lost me, completely.

I come to FDL site from somewhere in Asia so do not have access to Bill Moyers.
The local available cable service does carry CNN International but in most ways as with CNN in the States it offers at best a so-so or worse blend of slanted and dumbed down “news” and editorial tilt. Oddly enough however CNN International shows Jon Stewart and TDS here.Go figure…
With span the planet Inet however one is able to come up for air easily enough and sites such as FDL surely are a breath of fresh air these days.
Thank you for pointing out Bill Moyers ES. I am sure his comments are/were worthy/valid ones which very likely I would agree with.
Is this from a real song? I’d like to get the real song if it is.

1)Um yes. It’s very good to make that distinction. Tawain, HongKong, Mainland Chinese. There are differences. Big ones.
2) Yes There has been some back and forth on the dollar debt. You hurt us, we can hurt you. Don’t feel like elaborating. But it takes two to tango.
3) Sure they can, but the Western market is of crucial importance. Traditionally it has been that way for all “asian miracle nations” Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong.
4) I have a little project called deconstructing China. I only challenge folks to come up with less generalizations when it comes to China, more analysis.
My Iranian coworker said he was misquoted. She is in no way a fan of him, but she said that the more correct translation was something closer to him saying that Iran’s homosexuals aren’t like America’s in their overt-displays, visibility. Now, this in no way makes it better, because we all know why they aren’t like that in Iran. But a far different translation and meaning (although she could be wrong as well and it could be closer to what the initial post said).
