This was the ad that we had placed in the Bloomington Herald Times for publication in Baron Hill's district on Sunday when we discovered that he had changed his vote on S-CHIP.
Written by the incomparable Digby, we thought you'd like to see it anyway.
We're switching our resources to the other Democrats who are still refusing to vote to override George Bush's veto: Jim Marshall (D-GA), Mike McIntyre (D-NC), Bob Etheridge (D-NC), Gene Taylor (D-MS).
From the Atlanta Journal Consitution today:
Marshall's spokesman, Doug Moore, said Marshall is unlikely to change his position and he played down the chances that the phone campaign would hurt Marshall among his Democratic constituents.
"It's impossible to predict an impact," Moore said. "Some people were upset and some people were happy" with Marshall's vote, he said. "But you're only hearing from the upset ones. A lot of constituents agree with the way Jim voted."
This is rather amusing, since Democrats are quick to argue that they aren't hearing from progressives when they want to justify their vote on something reactionary. Now all of a sudden there's a silent conservative majority out there. Tell me, who are these people that are so excited about cutting funding to children's health care?
We're going to keep the pressure up.

SO soon? GENERAL STRIKE 11/6!!
Where is everyone?
Hell yeah! Hoosiers have a conscience after all. Nice work Jane, sorry about the Yankees though. Actually, not.
Jane, was there supposed to be a pic of the ad? Seemed like from what you were saying, there should have been.
I frame it this way. If you vote against SCHIP, you don’t like kids. I know. Simple. But that’s the kinda guy I can be. Sometimes.
Steve-AR @ 2
Somewhere…
Steve-AR @ 2
Downstairs
Did anyone watch Senator Clinton on Olbermann earlier?
Ditto!
I’m trying to pretend I don’t know the truth about politicians.
Where is it?
Everythingseemssoneat @ 10
So who do you want to have a beer with?
Oh, I am totally going on strike on Nov. 6. Though I’m not entirely sure how me not working on my dissertation is going to bring The Man to his knees.
Eureka Springs @ 12
I would have a beer with Edwards.
Excellent ad. It is unthinkable that a Democrat would take such a position against S-CHIP.
What do they gain by it? Who are they trying to please by their opposition? To me, this is an absolute no-brainer… even for Republicans.
It must be some type of bizarre self-hatred.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 8
Yes. She was interesting. Answered the question about Gore running in a very professional way.
That is a killer ad. Very well done. Oh man.
Morris Sheppard @ 11
Thank you confirming my question. I thought I was going nuts.
Republicans and Libertarians.
It’s IGMSFY.
Ann in AZ @ 16
How? Will she gracefully step aside if President Gore seeks re-election?
I would like to have a beer with Cheney before Federal Marshals hauled him away.
whew! hard refresh to see the ad.
Ann in AZ @ 16
I missed that. Would you tell me what she said?
Everythingseemssoneat @ 21
Fixed.
Ann in AZ @ 16
KO came out swinging, Hill, hit a few base hits…!!! *g*
Anyone know of a cheap source of printed US Constitutions?
I’d like to hand them out with a flyer that says, “Better Read This Before Bush and Cheney Take it Away”. Come to the ___ (strike/protest/whatever we are calling this) on Nov. 6th at _____________.
I figure I could start handing them out wherever I am.
I’m in IN-9, and a lot of people here have been working hard to get Baron to switch his vote on this. He deserves our thanks for doing the right thing.
Still working on FISA, but I can tell you that he is not a supporter of telecom immunity. Don’t know if it’s a deal-breaker for him.
(Oh, and Jane, you may want to take Hill’s name out of your third paragraph. ;) )
cleter @ 14
A few Microbrews…!!! ;-)
Toby Wollin @ 26
I got all of mine from Buzzflash.

With soy ink and 75% recycled paper…!!! *g*
Toby Wollin @ 26
When I was kid growing up in North Carolina, Senator Sam Ervin’s office used to send copies of the Constitution to anyone who asked. Little booklet version. I miss that old guy.
$12,000,000,000 per month for war. But we can’t take care of our children’s health. And know this also, many kids, the one’s that come from horribly dysfunctional families and are in desperate need of help, do their crying for the most part inside. These kids need our help too.
cleter @ 20
You’re kidding, of course. Basically she said that she’s very much hoping that he receives the Nobel Peace Prize because he so deserves it due to his efforts to change the world on the Global Warming issue. As to his running, she thinks they have a good array of candidates running as Dems, and she will stick to her knitting and let others stick to theirs as they see fit. But she was not at all negative, nor was she willing to cast any kind of aspersions or make any predictions on anyone’s actions.
Octogenarian Bob Byrd always carries a pocket copy, doesn’t Russ Feingold too…???
CTuttle @ 34
Yes, and I am never without one. Good reading when you have a few minutes.
cleter @ 13
Please hold up on the date. We’ll get a lot more people if we can pull this off on a Saturday. Union people will still be insured and hourly workers will not lose wages. I think it’s important that the first date be a Saturday. From my workplace alone, there would probably be twenty more people involved.
It takes more than a ‘village’ to raise a kiddo. And ‘my pet goat’ won’t cover it either. It takes money, empathy, compassion and love.
Everythingseemssoneat @ 21
Two shots of tokillya would be better!
Twain @ 35
I enjoy many of the Federalist Papers too…!!! *g*
Loo Hoo. @ 36
Let me know what day to not-write, and I will totally be all over the not-writing.
Loo Hoo. @ 36
I emphatically agree with this. As it happens I can do either, and would like to…do both, but the massive participation of a Saturday is FAR MORE important and desirable than the symbolism of a Tuesday. Most people I know, hearing it’s on a Tuesday, will ask, “Why don’t they do these things on a Saturday?”, it being self-evident why they should.
What a great ad.
I thought the purpose of a strike is to shut day to day business down to make a point. If it’s on a Saturday wouldn’t it be more of a protest?
CTuttle @ 34
He’s probably got it memorized!! ;-)
I like Gore. And I love kiddo.
lahoma
Slothrop @ 31
Yep, me too. He spoke at my college graduation in 1974. What you are referring to is the “pocket” edition - you can still get those, $2.75 from the government printing office.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 45
Draft Gore, dagnabit!!! *g*
TexBetsy @ 42
Yes! And paid for by Blue America PAC! Jane said earlier that more $$ to BA PAC are most welcome for the cause. here
Millineryman @ 43
I’m suggesting that the first go-round not be a strike, but a massive assembly/march. A strike could be round two.
Valley Girl @ 48
I am afraid we need to pay for the water pump on the car before we consider donations, but this Blue America is always my first or second stop.
TexBetsy @ 50
Oh, I hear you! I did kick in a bit earlier today. That said, I can’t always manage, either. Car was towed to repair place today, looking at unknown amount for repairs- ignition, alternator, etc.
dannyM @ 15
I also do not understand the rationale of voting against this program. It can’t be that it’s too expensive considering what we’re paying for the war in Iraq. (Apparently it’s ok to spend money taking lives but not saving them.) I can only think it’s the “socialized health care” aspect. Which is just silly. We’ve got “socialized” education, why not health care? Someone mentioned about road construction on an earlier post. We have “socialized” road construction. Again, why not health care?
Maybe they’re afraid of losing all the money they get from the insurance lobby.
I just do not understand the opposition to this program.
OT, another good cause, from Mahablog:
Isn’t Impeachment specified 13 times within the Constitution??? Spread liberally amongst the three branches’ inherent duties…!!!
CTuttle @ 54
And how many times is GOD mentioned? Or gay marriage? Or Christianity?
Valley Girl @ 51
I had to do the freaking smog today. It never ends. Until we have cars that don’t pollute.
Looks like the schip is hitting the fan.
ADM @ 52
Well stated! It is really hard to understand the basis of the oppostion on this.
FYI, New post
rwcole @ 57
LOL
Ann in AZ @ 16
I got the impression that Hillary fears the Gore. She essentially dodged the question.
Overall, she made a very good presentation, though I think her answers were intentionally vague. IMHO, her anwser for her Kyl-Leiberman vote was not particularly forthright - more truthy than truthful.
She hit a good sound byte or two, like the end of cowboy diplomacy.

I’m on perpetual strike WRT The Shillary.
*G*
cleter @ 13
May I suggest some motheaten, stained and worn out nightware, a three day old stubble, mussed up hair, bunny slippers of course, worn in the streets, with a quaint sign of some sort . .
Somethng to the effect of:
“I won’t dissertate myself FOR THE MAN!!!”
I’m just sayin, it’s ONE way to go.
;-)
In due respect to Mz. Hamsher, that’s a great ad.
The SCHIP issue has exploded and the progressives need to ram this down the throats of the MSM, the reichwing, the ‘centrists’ (who are further right than Attila The Hun) and the DLC, DNC, RNC, FCC, FBI, CIA . . . uh, sorry, I love all them letters . .
Shove it out there, and paint every single politician and member of the masses from churchhouses to cathouses with the message that bad people don’t care about children.
Over and over. I’ts a meme. And I meme it!
Thanks, Mz. Hamsher, great read. I’m likin where FDL is at these days on a LOT of issues.
The Centrists have screwed us so bad, it’s time to call them the enemy and paint them as such.
If it’s one issue at a time, fine. On this one, I’m on board. Moveon got what little money I have a few weeks ago over the ad issue for Betrayeus.
My hearts with them, though.
And in accord, too, with Blue America PAC.
I’ll send when and if I can . . . but you have my heart for THIS one. Well done, Blue A, Mz. Hamsher and Digby. Well phreakin done, indeed.
That’s good wow. And I bow. (HT)
cleter @ 20
Heh, she should step aside now for her diviciveness WRT the Dem Party . . . she, the MSM, and the PTBe are keeping REAL progressive candidates out of the debate and the competition. Hardly a democratic process IMHO.
Harumph.
When the SCHIP hits the fan, the Blue Dog Democrats run crying to their conservative ideological buddies in the culture of corruption Republican Party.
That ad makes Baron hill look completely *toxic*. I love it. *g*
Isn’t it somewhat ironic that to fund children’s health insurance requires that another group of people MUST smoke. Well fuck then….enough of the anti-smoking laws. Let’s everybody chain smoke our lungs black so we can insure every child. The logic is way on the far side of stupid.
Loo Hoo. @ 36
Geez, it’s not a work strike/stoppage if it’s on a weekend and a day off . . . what part of that am I missing?
. . . I thought a work stoppage and strike was about sacrifice, and making a point.
But if ya wanna take a weekend day to do it, I’ll bring my portable TV, we can watch the playoffs, and I’ll have lots of non union cold Coors in my cooler. A lil bbq, mesquite coals, some German Potato Salad, and Sweet Tea and lemonade for our Southern pals.
Frisbee’s too?
Bigwellswift @ 69
I don’t like that part of the bill. I think we should be taxing the lords (companies) and not the peasants(the consumers). But it took x amount of fire lit under such and such congresscritters arses . . .
mui @ 71
Taxing the companies adds up to the same thing. That tax will be passed directly to the retailer. The large companies never really pay when you charge it all back to the customers.
And by the way, when you drag cigars along with the cigarettes tax wise, you will put thousands of impoverished Latin Americans out of work. Make that 100s of thousands. No pun intended but pick your poison.
If our tax dollars were spent correctly we plebes wouldn’t have to continually cough up more taxes.
Loo Hoo. @ 38
Ok, NOW I am in accord with yer way of ‘doing’.
But it’s gotta be 20 Year Anjejo of some sort.
*G*
That way we don’t need the lemon OR the salt!
*G*
cleter @ 40
The worn underwear? The bunny slippers? Hmm?
Commitment don’t come easy, hoss . . . ;-)
Millineryman @ 43
At last, sanity prevails . . . sigh.
Social Change just ain’t what it used to be . . .
Use the Send Message button here to, well, send Baron Hill a message.
If the pressure is let off one iota Baron Hill will do the wrong thing.
Thanks for running the as in the HT. I think the robocalls might have had a bit of an impact as well.
I’m still looking for primary opposition for Hill.
I like the formulation that the Dems are “terrified” by the sound of silence. They must have people marching in the streets in order to support (give them cover) a progressive idea, but if they hear nothing they are terrified of retribution from a silent majority.
Bigwellswift @ 72
Agreed.
