(Naomi Wolf is the author of The End of America: A Letter of Warning To A Young Patriot.)
I wish people would stop breaking into tears when they talk to me these days.
I am traveling across the country at the moment — Colorado to California — speaking to groups of Americans from all walks of life about the assault on liberty and the ten steps now underway in America to a violently closed society.
The good news is that Americans are already awake: I thought there would be resistance to or disbelief at this message of gathering darkness — but I am finding crowds of people who don’t need me to tell them to worry; they are already scared, already alert to the danger and entirely prepared to hear what the big picture might look like. To my great relief, Americans are smart and brave and they are unflinching in their readiness to hear the worst and take action. And they love their country.
But I can’t stand the stories I am hearing. I can’t stand to open my email these days. And wherever I go, it seems, at least once a day, someone very strong starts to cry while they are speaking.
In Boulder, two days ago, a rosy-cheeked thirtysomething mother of two small children, in soft yoga velours, started to tear up when she said to me: `I want to take action but I am so scared. I look at my kids and I am scared. How do you deal with fear? Is it safer for them if I act or stay quiet? I don’t want to get on a list.’ In DC, before that, a beefy, handsome civil servant, a government department head — probably a Republican — confides in a lowered voice that he is scared to sign the new ID requirement for all government employees, that exposes all his most personal information to the State — but he is scared not to sign it: `If I don’t, I lose my job, my house. It’s like the German National ID card,’ he said quietly. This morning in Denver I talked for almost an hour to a brave, much-decorated high-level military leader who is not only on the watch list for his criticism of the administration — his family is now on the list. He has undertaken many dangerous combat missions in his service to his country over the course of his career, but his voice cracks when he talks about the possibility that he is exposing his children to harassment.
Jim Spencer, a former columnist for the Denver Post who has been critical of the Bush administration, told me today that I could use his name: he is on the watch list. An attorney contacts me to say that she told her colleagues at the Justice Department not to torture a detainee; she says she then faced a criminal investigation, a professional referral, saw her emails deleted — and now she is on the watch list. I was told last night that a leader of Code Pink, the anti-war women’s action group, was refused entry to Canada. I hear from a tech guy who works for the airlines — again, probably a Republican — that once you are on the list you never get off. Someone else says that his friend opened his luggage to find a letter from the TSA saying that they did not appreciate his reading material. Before I go into the security lines, I find myself editing my possessions. In New York’s LaGuardia, I reluctantly found myself putting a hardcover copy of Tara McKelvey’s excellent Monstering, an expose of CIA interrogation practices, in a garbage can before I get in the security line; it is based on classified information. This morning at my hotel, before going to the airport, I threw away a very nice black T-shirt that said `We Will Not be Silenced’ — with an Arabic translation — that someone had given me, along with a copy of poems written by detainees at Guantanamo.
In my America we are not scared to get in line at the airport. In my America, we will not be silenced.
More times than I can count, courageous and confident men and women who are telling me about speaking up, but who are risking what they see as the possible loss of job, home or the ability to pay for grown kids’ schooling, start to choke up. Yesterday a woman in one gathering started to cry simply while talking about the degradation of her beloved country.
And always the questions: what do we do?
It is clear from this inundation of personal stories of abuse and retribution against ordinary Americans that a network of criminal behavior and intention is catching up more and more mainstream citizens in its grasp. It is clear that this is not democracy as usual — or even the corruption of democracy as usual. It is clear that we will need more drastic action than emails to Congress.
The people I am hearing from are conservatives and independents as well as progressives. The cardinal rule of a closing or closed society is that your alignment with the regime offers no protection; in a true police state no one is safe.
I read the news in a state of something like walking shock: seven soldiers wrote an op-ed critical of the war — in the New York Times; two are dead, one shot in the head. A female soldier who was about to become a whistleblower, possibly about abuses involving taxpayers’ money; shot in the head. Pat Tillman, who was contemplating coming forward in a critique of the war; shot in the head. Donald Vance, a contractor himself, who blew the whistle on irregularities involving arms sales in Iraq — taken hostage FROM the US Embassy BY US soldiers and kept without recourse to a lawyer in a US held-prison, abused and terrified for weeks — and scared to talk once he got home. Another whistleblower in Iraq, as reported in Vanity Fair: held in a trailer all night by armed contractors before being ejected from the country.
Last month contractors, immune from the rule of law, butchered 17 Iraqi civilians in cold blood. Congress mildly objected — and contractors butchered two more innocent civilian Iraqi ladies on Tuesday — in cold blood.
Today the New York Times reports that the State Department is not cooperating with Iraqi or FBI investigators into the matter of the Blackwater massacre of seventeen Iraqi civilians.
Pay attention to this. Readers who know `the blueprint’ will be horrified but not surprised. `Step Two’ in the closing down of an open society is for the State to showcase to civilians the fact that a paramilitary force is outside the rule of law. When SA began — still illegally — beating citizens in Germany, National Socialist strategists made sure that photographers and reporters were present. We must consider: if the State showcases to Americans the fact that it is protecting its own cadre of violent criminals in Iraq — will Congress be courageous in confronting Blackwater violence when Blackwater manifests its well-documented plans to deploy more aggressively here at home? Or will this penumbra of unaccountable, State-defended violence be enough to intimidate lawmakers — and the rest of us? Remember that Mussolini directed Blackshirts to intimidate Parlimentarians even before Italy was a dictatorship and Hitler used the same tactic in lining the halls of the still-functioning German Parliament with Brownshirts — paramilitary forces that had established a reputation for brutality against civilians. And that was enough to cow lawmakers even as the trappings of democracy were still intact.
Remember that under current arrangements, the Department of Homeland Security can deploy Blackwater in your town tomorrow.
With this kind of messaging about the State’s protection for what is its own paramility force of torturers and murderers, if Blackwater massacres seventeen civilians in Times Square — or turns their guns on protesters at an antiwar rally — in spite of the trappings of democracy, will anyone be brave enough to hold them accountable?’
It is clear yet that violent retribution, torture or maybe worse, seems to go right up this chain of command? Is it clear yet that these people are capable of anything? Is it obvious yet that criminals are at the helm of the nation and need to be not only ousted but held accountable for their crimes?
Is it treason yet?
This is an open invitation to honorable patriots on the Right and in the center to join this movement to restore the rule of law and confront this horror: this is not conservatism, it is a series of crimes against the nation and against the very essence of America. Join us, we need you. This movement must transcend partisan lines. The power of individual conscience is profound when people start to wake up. TK Comey said No; history will look at this torture and disgrace the torturers. A judge today ruled that the US can’t just ship prisoners out of Guantanamo to be tortured at will — she said No. The Center for Constitutional Rights is about to file a civil lawsuit — against Blackwater: they are saying No.
In Germany, according to historian Richard Evans, in 1931-1932, if enough Germans of conscience had begun to say No — history would have had an entirely different outcome. If we go any further down this road the tears will be those of conservatives as well as progressives. They will be American tears.
The time for weeping has to stop; the time for confronting must begin.

The first thing a newly-elected Democratic President should do is strip the TSA of all of it’s powers pending review and then rewrite the legislation that gives it authority, if in fact the Congress decides that they are worth keeping around. TSA is an agency with too broad a scope and too loose a mandate created in response to a crisis that will likely never be repeated.
Right on Naomi!!! People do know what is going on. Granted there are still some loyal hanger’s on, but people are not stupid…they have been traumatized…this country is suffering from PTSD…and they are waking up…no matter what the media try to tell us. They are not sure about how they want to vote, but they do understand that there exists an “element” in our government that “just doesn’t set right”…or in my own personal opinion…well, I won’t go there…*g*
Absolute Fuckery!!! Mahalo, Naomi, for your tireless efforts… Godspeed…!!! *g*
LS @ 3
I think you are so right. It is PTSD. But that is a dangerous time — when we are too disoriented to realize that it is a new game with new rules and we have to strategize accordingly. I just saw a video YET AGAIN of sdomeone being tasered and this time pepper sprayed — this time a child — in Florida again of course (the state legisdlature has ties to Jeb Bush). These videos are so well shot, they are pornography of violence and it is hard to avoid the hypothesis that they are streaming into our consciousness as a means of subjugating us implicitly — six months ago there wasn’t a violence-porn vido directing abuse against citizens every other day on AOL — time to get it.
Let’s face it, what the Frost family is going through right now is a great example for those who think everything is Just Fine in the USA.
Thanks, Naomi, and I’ll be reading your book.

Specifically, what do we do? I contribute to ACLU, to MoveOn, to progressive candidates. What?
Naomi Wolf @ 5
Yup. Softening everyone up to the tactics. It is amazing to hear people “excuse” tazaring, as if it is a mild form of “retraint”….better than killing someone…well, people have died from tazering…at least MSM reported that the other day for what it’s worth…not much. I remember that horrible video of the young people who had pepper spray sprayed right into their eyes while they were being held for protesting. I saw the video of the 15-year old who was pepper-sprayed by the policeman the other day…makes me sick. 1930’s….
General strike!
This country has lost its soul and its courage. When our Congress debates whether to allow the truth in regard to the FIRST Genocide of the last century.. truth vs offending a political group in Turkey? Truth with the Gulf of Tonkin? Truth with the Palestinian ethnic cleansing? Truth about WMDs and Iraq. Truth about the brutal murderous actions of Blackwater? Truth about Torture, Rendition, and secret Gulags around the globe operated by our military and MERCENARIES? Blackwater bases in North Carolina, Illinois, and California? Secret prisons in the country? Is there any reason why the entire world hates America now? Harold Pinter, you are absolutely correct.
When will it end? Will America ever regain the principles of justice and freedom for all?
God bless you, Naomi Wolf!

I agree this would be ideal in a strong working democracy but the ratcheting-up of violence against citizens — and the ratcheting-up of pure lawlessness on the part of the Bush administration — is escalating so fast I do not believe we have the luxury of waiting for an election and assuming we will be in a stable safe environment while that happens. Right now it is a handful of stories of dead soldiers, state defense of contractors, and only three videos of savagery against citizens; but what if next week there are twenty such videos? and what if someone dies on camera? Will we protest, will our legislators stand up to draft better laws? History shows that a democracy that is under assault as agressively as ours is simply folds when theer is a tipping point of publicized violence against citizens. That is why I am starting to ask us all to think about prosecution for treason. Lawyers, please chime in: if the Bush administration is arguing that there is an `enemy combatant’ status that refers to no battlefield and if they are saying that rendition is OK though it violates national and international laws and treaties then can’t the definition of treason in the founding documents — aiding and comforting the enemy — apply here? We have an enemy that is not an agent of another state but an internal enemy — an American enemy — that has subverted the state and betrayed it –
Naomi: do you know anything more about the new ID requirement referenced by the DC Civil Servant?
I’ve been following the case of workers at Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) in Pasadena who’ve filed suit against new security checks they feel are a gross violation of their privacy. An appeals court ruled in their favor last week and issued a temporary stay.
An wondering if this is one program being implemented nationally?
Naomi, your posts scare the beejesus out of me, but in a good way.
Who is publicly doing this intimidation?
Who makes everyone “fair game”?
What are their methods of distribution of this intimidation?
I of course look at commercially supported right-wing talk radio and the right-wing blogs such as Michelle Malkin.
I want to be sure the media see the role that talk radio and right-wing bloggers play in this fear. The media may think because THEY think it is beneath notice and silly doesn’t mean that the targets of those attacks don’t still feel the intimidation.

Well… give me some time.
I thought I read recently that the whistleblower protections had been strengthened, but perhaps that was just for government employees, or else it hasn’t been signed into law. Any thoughts? Is this one small step in the right direction?
How does one know if they are on the list?

This is the right question. Go to AmericanFreedom Campaign.org — we HAVE to pass this ten point legislative package to stabilize democracy NOW. So scream and yell at your representatives and get all your neighbors to. But I think it is time for tactics from other democracy movements: a national strike to bring the nation to a standstill — perhaps thousands of `sit down for the Constitution’ strikes in which ordinary americans sit in the center of main arteries by teh thousands holding signs that are enlarged images of the Constitution. You can start mobilizing that and make sure the signs are mainstream — Moms for the Constitution, Republicans for the Constitution. This is what they did in Pakistan. You will be arrested but what we need now is an outlet for action that will overwhelm the nation and show that it is not business as usual. And I believe it is time — this is me talking, it is not an AFC position — to IMPEACH. PROSECUTE FOR TREASON. SAVE AMERICA. When Congress hears a groundswell like this it can force them into another level of action — and talk, talk, talk. We have five million people now in our partner orgs that are part of the AFC — and I believe this pressure is starting to shift the frame; Carter came out against torture, Bruce Springsteen, Meryl Streep against rendition — it is time for millions of people to start standing up and saying, these are violent criminals. This is an emergency. They need to be behind bars for all of our safety, including Republicans’.
Jane, hope you are well. Naomi, like you, and all here put down in words, so well, what a lot of bloggers, and everyone that I speak with have been realizing for a long time (too long). I speak with a lot of people, I’m not shy. Not one person, mostly in the last year and a half, not one is in the, what is it today? 26% believe the MSM. WE don’t believe any of the bs that comes out of the WH. Bloggers have continually pointed out that these grifters work for us. I am sick and tired of being bullied at OUR expense, our tax dollars. NO INTEREST IN US. Our tax dollars fund their health insurance, their perks, hell, $146 mill last year for airline upgrades. Wonder what they do with their frequent flyer miles. JEEZ, I could go on. YOU GUYS ROCK.
As if it’s not enough to worry about losing your job anyway; if you have a child with a condition, you really can’t afford to lose the healthcare coverage that comes with a job.
The “Great Risk Shift” certainly has the effect of keeping a few more quiet.
rosalind @ 13
This is a really important action you just took and thank you. People, please send examples that you hear of effective resistance to me c/o the AFC — I will open a page tracking what works. THIS is profound –there are a million ways to resist once people get it. I look at the recent judicial decisions that are saying NO as part of this kind of individual awakening. I just had an amazing conversation with Daniel Ellsberg — a hero of course — who is offering his leadership and we are hearing every day from new prganizations that can make a huge difference — when judges and lawyers realize the danger and speak up that will be a crossroads — and when conservatives do that will be a tipping point. But let us not just speak to ourselves, we must reach out. This transcends partisanship.
Remind people too — history shows that keeping your head down does NOT KEEP YOU SAFE — it makes things more dangerous for everyone. Resisting NOW is the only route to safety. Remond conservatives that there is no secureity for anyone in a violent dictatorship. Today it is a fifteen year old Black girl being subdied by the State — tomorrow your son or daughter, whatever your class or color. In a fascist shift violence always starts with people seen as marginalized then moves toward the `mainstream’. Remind people of this. We need to be scared but in a good way. As someone said yesterday to me — it is better to know.
More progress in Iraq. Mr. Bush is responsible for these atrocities. And he’s doing these things in the name of freedom and spreading Democracy. The President is committing these acts in our name.
AP – A U.S. attack killed 19 insurgents and 15 civilians, including nine children, northwest of the capital Thursday — one of the heaviest civilian death tolls in an American operation in recent months. The military said it was targeting senior leaders of al-Qaida in Iraq.
I want this “man”, George W. Bush, held to account.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 24
The appeasers will be behind the fence right next to you.
Spread the word, you are not safe.

A toothless tiger, and, I believe there was a relatively recent Supreme Court decision eviscerating prior protections…!!!
Professor Foland @ 22
That’s the one point, toward the end of the movie, that so impressed me in “Sicko”. Michael Moore came right out and stated that privatized insurance guarantees a feudal relationship between the worker and his/her company.
Naomi Wolf @ 20
Okay, but let’s all five million of us (and the five million who will join us) plan one day. Like the immigrants did on May 1, 2006. Let’s do what they did. A Saturday. Every major city in America. I don’t want to get my small local group doing it one day and another small group another day. This needs coordination and leadership. It needs to be well advertised in advance, with permits, rules of assembly and MUSIC!
Eureka Springs @ 18
You don’t, it’s a State Secret and a felony to tell you. If you are prevented from flying or leaving the Country, it’s a State Secret to tell you why. If you are on a list/lists it’s damn near impossible to get off. I suspect any of us who have supported liberal causes and/or protested the war are on a list.
*gasp* Hill on KO??? ;-)
Naomi Wolf @ 20
Let’s bring these bastards to justice!!
Gore would undo the damage.
Not sure about Hillary. Will the Goldwater Girl stand up for our civil liberties?
And that is why it is so difficult and painful to fight. After saying the Pledge of Allegiance every day between the ages of 6 and 17, I’ve really taken “with liberty and justice for all” to heart.
It takes a lot of revolutionary thinking, not to mention courage, to actually believe that our government is actively manipulating us to consolidate their own power. Just acknowledging the problem requires overcoming cognitive dissonance.
I still have trouble really believing it while I write this post.
Naomi Wolf @ 25
sorry I submitted that wrong. Shit. It is very hard to avoid the hypothesis that this is messaging. This is like a theatre or horror film in which they are saying, 17 civilians, try that out; ok now try this out; ok now children. And at home: Ok now a student; OK now a NY city mom; OK now a teenage girl. Try that out.
The message: there is no atrocity that is beyond us and there is no accountability for the murderers.
Prosecution. Now. This is simply too dangerous. There is no reason to think that a spectacle of mass violence won’t unfold on our own streets, this time with a Blackwater signature rather than al qaeda’s.
Unfortunately the escalation is predictable — when people start to wake up to a big picture that is when the would-be tyrants ratchet up their violence and lawlessness.
Tell your representative to hold hearings. I am learning from constitutional lawyers what is involved with prosecution for treason and I will post it as soon as I fully understand it. Send your insights around the internet and ask prominent people to stand up and call for prosecution.
Hey, Naomi-
Thanks so much for coming here and posting.
Here’s a story you may appreciate. Last week I was headed out to my car to come to work and my neighbor Tommy stopped me. He’s a rapper in a local band, mostly apolitical from what I can tell. He moved in about halfway through the summer and has been a great neighbor, if something of a party boy.
“Hey,” he said, “You write about politics, don’t you?”
I replied that I did.
“I don’t follow politics that closely,” he said, “But the other night I saw this woman named Naomi Wolf on TV and what she was saying really scared me. Is she for real?”
“Of course she’s for real,” I said, “And her message is very urgent. You should get her book.”
“If what she says is true, then we’re in a whole lot of trouble,” he said.
“Oh, we are,” I said, “We’ve been in trouble.”
If he hasn’t gotten your book by the next time I see him, I’ll loan him my copy.
Ms. Wolf, the hairs on my arms & back of my neck stood up when I read this. Literally.
Loo Hoo. @ 29
That is a really good idea. And yes that is the kind of strike that worked in bringing down the Soviet Union, people power, etc. What day do you propose? Let’s start here.
TRex @ 36
CalGeorge @ 33
I believe Edwards when he says he will do the same, to agree with you about needing someone to undo damage.
Amazing post, Naomi. Hairs stood up on my arms too when I read it.
Denver ‘08??? Folks…???
All gov’t contracts with Blackwater have to be rescinded.
As it stands now, Blackwater has a contract for international “drug interdiction” and also a contract for moving cargo and personnel in and around Afghanistan, the source of 90% of the world’s heroin.
Are we to believe that this organization, under investigation for murder and arms smuggling, is suddenly going to act like Boy Scouts when it comes to heroin?
Naomi Wolf @ 39
sorry I did it again. Thank you all so much for bearing with me on my tech learning curve. I appreciate very much what you told this young man but I ask you and all of us to shift a bit our sense of what the outcome of such exchanges should be — if we a)become apathetic (it is too late) we are facing terror that is unimaginable; if we b) tune out and shop online, same thing; if we remain in a critique mode it is almost as bad. We all need to shift into mobilization mode — urge him to act and tell him how — despair is toxic right now. Truly it is good news that so many people are waking up in time and energized by the truth of this discussion and the urgency of this fight. Start a Freedom Chapter that helps by posting resistance strategies and planning for your community’s part of the national strike? give him paper with his rep’s info on it? honestly we all need to switch into `it is up to me’ consciousness — I am just one person and so are you but history shows that coordination in the millions shifts possibilities.
CalGeorge @ 33
Of all of the Dems, I think Hillary is the person most likely to prosecute these M-F’s. She has been beaten-up by the right wing conspiracy for 25 years and I think she and Bill want to settle the score. Gen Clark said in a interview that Hillary would (prosecute?).
Eureka Springs @ 9
Tues, Nov. 6th has been proposed….
As Audre Lorde said, “Your silence will not protect you.”
Scream, raise hell, raise consciousness. Don’t take lies for facts. Push back and keep pushing. The Bushies are cowards, and can be cowed. But we all need to stiffen our collective political spine.
Off-topic. Doris Lessing wins the Noble Prize for Literature, Harold Bloom, woman hater extraordinaire, Howls. See, there is all manner of hope….
Yesterday, Congressman Tom Allen of Maine, one of the good guys now running against Senator Collins, bothered me a bit by failing to take several of us seriously when stating secrecy was the greatest threat to our Democracy. His silence still bothers me as I reflect on it today.
Yes I agree, this might be a good time for people to wake up. I enjoyed your post last week as well.
Just a note from the Americasfreedomecampaign.org:
“The American Freedom Campaign (www.americanfreedomcampaign.org) is asking all of the major presidential candidates to sign the American Freedom Pledge. This pledge, which concludes with the line, “I pledge to fight to protect and defend the Constitution from assault by any President,” was sent by mail and fax to the campaigns on August 15.
As of October 4, all eight Democratic presidential candidates had either signed the Pledge or provided the Campaign with a specific and detailed statement expressing their commitment to defending the Constitution. On the Republican side, only Rep. Ron Paul, who signed a similar pledge with the American Freedom Agenda earlier this year, has been responsive to the Campaign and its supporters.”
Laura Doty @ 46
I am on strike now..wont you join me? *s*
Cliff Varnell @ 43
You are so right. And my suspicion is that their 15 BILLION dollar contract — for them and other players — is a way to let them have a greater presence on US soil. Methadone in the heartland? Blackwater. Pot growers in Northern California? Blackwater. My own hair stood on end when someone told me that on Fox news they had started to talk about the `domestic threat’ — which is `only five per cent of the population.’ And Podhoretz is talking about the `domestic insurgency.’ That is us. I am reading a book about how IBM cooperated lucratively with the Nazis and how early on the Nazis began to talk about the `internal threat’ — the Jews.

Yeah, Melbourne Cup day! Down Under, that is…!!! ;-)

Meet you on the barricades ES !
Thanks for the tip, Naomi. You’re totally right.
Still, I think that it was a good first step to getting my rapper neighbor interested. He seemed pretty electrified by your appearance on whichever news show it was. Your message is resonating with people who are normally outside the political discourse.
Laura Doty @ 46
I like it!

I agree with you, Steve – behind the peach and baby-blue jackets beats the heart of a Samurai warrior. She is not my favorite for sure. She may not even seem to be as progressive as we would like – but I do believe she is the toughest candidate we have and for the job at hand, I do believe that she IS the one.

What? Not November 5th?
Remember, remember the 5th of November….
Laura Doty @ 46
I love it — do you guys agree? or is a weekend, say a saturday, better? Historically I believe things work better on a weekday when more institutions can be shut down –
I like your sense of timing too. There is no time to waste but that is a reasonable amount of time to organize.
But I beg you: let us make it look DISCIPLINED PATRIOTIC AND MAINSTREAM. And not make the mistake the left always makes of including other sub issues ie veganism, solar energy etc. ONLY THE RULE OF LAW AND THE CONSTITUTION> and let us carry a million US flags and let us wear red white and blue. And yes, music. Those of you who know rock stars and pop stars and COUNTRY stars and NASCAR figures — a true cross section — let us know. enlist them. and yes music LOTS OF MUSIC because the left just talks too much. Rosa Luxemburg said if I can’t dance it’s not my revolution.
And we should have a million people singing at once.
and ask police to come in uniform, and military men and women in uniform. and grandmas and babies. as well as the whole rainbow rest of us. we need to create a mass POSITIVE alternative reality to showcase in contrast to these thugs and criminals. The imagery is not trivial — the nazis succeeded so well because their mass spactacles appropriated `german’ imagery, we need to re appropriate American language, inspiration and imagery to remond people that torture is not America, spying is not America. And yes hand out copies of the constitution and the bill of rights — I am working on a user’s guide to it because it is actually pretty hard to understand.
There are similarities, and there are differences.
The SA greatly outnumbered the German army (limited to 100,000 by the Treaty of Versailles). However, when they challenged the army the army still won.
Now according to Prince, I think he said Blackwater has 21,000 people they can call on (resumes on file, perhaps?).
Still, that seems like pretty puny manpower, and it seems that many of them are more motivated by money than ideology.
Don’t find a handy reference, but I’d have to guess 1930s German population was maybe 20 million? So a couple percent of the German population were carrying arms for a charismatic leader, among a population suffering for 15 years or so from punitive reparations and a huge setback to their national pride.
And here, a few tenths of a percent might carry arms for a failed, aging leader whose speeches don’t even excite his faithful, amongst a population that less than 10 years ago was ridin’ an economic high under a handsome, charismatic leader with questionable taste in women.
Agree these guys are absolute utter a**holes, but we need outrage, ridicule and contempt, not yet more fear. That button’s been pushed so much it don’t work anymore.
naomi @ 23: thx naomi. here’s a link to the JPL story: http://www.latimes.com/news/lo…..;cset=true

I would certainly rule out Presidential Pardons…!!! *g*

yes I didn’t mean to skip that — thank you for your outreach — that is a very good first step. But I guess what I am trying so urgently to say is it is not my message it has to be OUR message. but THANK YOU
rosalind @ 63
That is important to note and let’s alert the legal community. Resistance is catching and a strong intellectual fuondation helps others ground their saying No.
Why stop with Blackwater soldiers or Blackwater patrol units on the city streets of America? Why not Blackwater judges?
KO-#4 “Be Al You Can Be!” LOL!!! ;-)
Naomi Wolf @ 38
Sorry, I was listening to Clinton on KO. Naomi, why don’t you take the leadership role? You have access to the other leaders. Decide on a date, enroll the support of the Ben Afleck and Bruce Springstein types. Let LeftBlogistan know what you need, and work with the established groups for expediency. Let’s talk with the organizers of the immigration rally. It was beautifully and peacefully done. If we can get the date set, it will all come together. And Neil Young’s Let’s Impeach the President is a perfect starter song, but we can add others that people already know. It has to be big, and planned well in advance. We do need hot musicians and movie stars to help promote it and to help you lead.

It occurs to me that if we’re going to strike, local blogs are going to be key to organizing the details in order to provide a turnout. MoveOn also has the ability to organize by geographic area. Even Daily Kos has meet-up groups by local area. But it requires real organizing.
Blackwater is willing to provide escorts to Camp FEMA.
Thanks for hang’n out here, Naomi!
I don’t have any confidence that a President H.R. Clinton will do anything about Blackwater.
After all, her old man didn’t do anything about the gun & drug running operation out of Mena, Ark. in the 80’s…
http://www.serendipity.li/cia/c_o_mena.html
Apologies to firepups who recall I’ve linked this a few times already over these past few weeks, but here is Garrett Keizer’s Harper’s article about a general strike.(text). He chose this date as it is an election day.
I like it. Vote, demonstrate. But don’t work, don’t buy things.
Hi, Naomi.
I had the pleasure of attending your presentation at the Tattered Cover in Denver on Tuesday night. You stated that you felt you were having trouble getting the attention of the mainstream, despite having a book in the top fifteen NYT bestsellers. You didn’t elaborate on why you thought this might be. Would you care to?
CTuttle @ 57
pow wow @ 58
Everyone should look at these images — thinsg are so normal for most people when what I call a `fascist shift’ is underway. And thank you yes, clearly we will need people with special skills and talents volunteering them. we need volunteers too because we have no money and this will require a massive coordination effort.
Don’t forget Col. Ted Westhusing who was “found” dead as a victim of an “apparent” suicide by … wait for it … the contractors he was investigating and who he accused of wrongdoing
And also, remember the helicopter crash that killed 12 troops in August a week before they were to testify against a superior
Steve-AR @ 45
I’m actually kind of afraid that Hillary would be most likely of all the Dems to use all the shiny new presidential powers, rather thsan try and jam them back in the bottle.
Actually, what I’m most afraid of is that the current administration has no real intention of giving up power.
I can see about R.E.M. and the B-52’s. Seriously.
Steve-AR @ 45
I absolutely agree. And she was great on KO just now. Hope John has the clip up soon. (god bless John Amato!)
Oklahoma kiddo @ 67
yikes. there has to be a reason why not and I don’t have legal training so I don’t know — my guess from reading history is that a) the lawyers and judges who are not `co-ordinated’ get ousted (see attempted US attorneys purge, see Goebbels april 1933) and b) blackwater can intimidate sitting judges. Important to remember that there was a judiciary throughout Mussolini’s and Hitler’s regimes; they were just scared to death to rule independently of the Party that had power.
Laura Doty @ 46
I think the success of the immigration rally was that it was on a Saturday.
Saw Naomi Wolf on the Colbert Report, hmmm – last night; the night before.
Christ – and Lynn Cheney was on Jon Stewart’s TDS. Just loved the no applause, no murmurs – nothing the end to be polite. I told someone, I’m sure she thinks she’s brave.
TRex @ 79
Great! Please!
Woops, sorry, it wasn’t on a Saturday. But we’d get far more participation if it were.
PeteCO @ 75
Thank you for having been there. I can speculate — what are your thoughts?
We in this family have no intention whatsoever of backing down from the neocon fascists who are trying to take control of this country. And the view here is that not all neocon fascists are Republican.
All I can say is WOOOOOW…this is an incredible post that goes right to the heart of the matter…WTF are we doing over there killing innocent men women and children? How does this horrifying war and the assault on our liberties actually serve anyone other then the oligarchy in this country….
To the detriment of the middle-class and the poor…all the rest of us.
Soon there will just be the Masters (the rich and powerful 5%) and the Slaves…the rest of us.
GOD HELP THIS COUNTRY!
Loo Hoo. @ 85
I think it’s important that it’s a weekday so that things can really be glaringly and obviously shut down.
Finally, some action. The fascist takeover of this country has been getting worse and worse. There have been empty promises from politicians to do something about it and nothing gets done. Only angry letters. The rule of law is ignored by the political criminals and congress does nothing. NOTHING!
This is what is needed. Organized resistance. Set a date. General strike. The politicians who can do something are simply not listening and not acting. They need to be woken up.
I have nothing to offer but my outrage and my body to be used in the general strike. Set the date. I don’t care when. I’ll be there.
One thing about 11/6, is that word is already going around about that date. Another is that–if this really worked–millions of people demonstrating on a work day is a big deal. The difference between a demonstration and a STRIKE.
It’s important to realize the difference between them.
Naomi- I am loving every word you write in comments.
And, at the risk I seeming to be a total jerk (I am not), but one who has trouble reading online comments, your comments would make for easier reading if you added a space between the paragraphs. Long text w/o breaks is hard to read. It’s part of the learning curve, and I have had to learn too.
All the best, xxoo VG
Tuesday, November 6th?
cleter @ 94
Wear your walking shoes..)
A general strike only has an impact if we have huge numbers. I don’t believe we have them yet, but with this book and Naomi out on tour, the numbers can only build. But everyone has to keep spreading the word, sharing Naomi’s book, writing to Congress, and *talking* about it.
The impression is that fascists are not concerned with matters of law. FISA, torture use by the U.S. government and the Patriot Act might perhaps be three ready examples of this.
Toby Wollin @ 50
Thank you, again very important. I love talking to you people. This is why this matters: we did press the candidates and we did move this issue forward; Hillary had supported certain kinds of torture (the bogus `ticking time bomb’ ) scenario but then shifted to her remarks to us when she finally gave us language of support. The NY Daily News used our pressure to press her campaign. So it does make a difference when millions of Americans put on pressure together. Now we are approaching the republicans. But what is hopeful is that six months ago we didn’t exist and that this effort began with three people in a room. Meaning it is far too rare that we are reminded that great historic shifts can be driven by citizens gathering at first in small groups with great hopes and using a framework of liberty. so let’s not despair. this cold actually be an amazing reawakening for the US — a chance for us not just to save our own nation but to take on the responsibility of being a real beacon of democracy around the world and not a vehicle of repression .. what great karma that would be…
Right on! Powerful post, but of course you are Naomi Wolf.
Naomi, I’ve volunteered to uphold the Constitution previously, and, I shall not fail to defend it against all threats, foreign or domestic, now…!!! *g*
(PS I’ve read it once or twice!)
Oklahoma kiddo @ 97
I think “not concerned with matters of law” is pretty much at the core of fascism.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 88
fair enough. The Founders knew that a despot coudl arise in America from any party — even that Congress could become despotic. That’s why they set up checks and balances as they did. Hillary with these powers is just as scary. Decent people of any party turn evil when they have unchecked power.
CTuttle @ 100
Thank you, that is exactly what I need to hear to feel energized when I am sad or overwhelmed by the hugeness of what we are up against. So we can sustain one another.
Perhaps examine the packing of the SCOTUS and the Federal Courts by the fascists over the last seven years.
Naomi Wolf @ 87
People who work for GE/NBC, for example, are doing pretty well from the security-industrial complex. People who make over 200k a year have done pretty well these past six years. Maybe if they ignore you, you’ll go away.
Fortunately, there isn’t much they can do (yet) about communities like this one.
Laura Doty @ 74
Laura, the problem for us union types with a workday strike is that we are UNINSURED during a strike. We would all be covered if it were on a Saturday. I think a Saturday would have the same impact if it were massive, with a lot less risk. Plus we’d get more people.
KalenCo @ 96
Time is short. Make a poster for your car windows, General Strike, date.
Maybe a website link, the Keizer article, perhaps, or this one:
general strike (text).
My question is how to crack into the media numbed public to what is going on….
This will end as it always has in history.
In blood. Innocent and Guilty alike.
The door that should never have been opened has been pried loose by the mob that is the Right today. It will have to be shut with corpses stacked to the sky.
Laura Doty @ 92
OK so true. Word is already going around? wow what a medium. OK: a strike means you don’t go to work, you don’t go to school, you don’t even march. You gather in a mass in a public place at the center of yoru community and SIT DOWN, perhaps for hours, in the middle of the action. Bring food, drink, sleeping bags; tents. You SIT. and you can have speakers and songs and distribute literature but you are not marching because marching invites aggression. This is a `we will not be moved.’ It worked also in the civil rights movement. You take up as much space as you can and you are completely peaceful. Itis not angry, it is a massive presence that makes everything stop.
As a german citizen i can say : like most westerners i dream about a month-long travel through the USA to take in the sights, but as long as the US are not a democratic state of laws, i’m not even willing to fly over. The US installed a very nice democracy in Germany after WWII, too bad you couldn’t do it at home.
And the history aficionados might want to look up “Notstandsgesetze”.
cleter @ 101
;0)
Loo Hoo. @ 106
Cry me a river.. I haven’t been insured for years and every day for the last 3 years I have been in dire need of medical attention. Wont you help a brother out?
PeteCO @ 105
Interesting. Yeah I have never had quite this experience — such a warm response online and not a single print review or feature on paper as far as I know. I think also people are afraid of reprisals — even if the fear is not conscious. Easy to just avoid the issue and not assign a reviewer or a reporter. Funny the contrast – in Australia all the major newspapers covered it and the equivalent of Time did too, so it is not that the subject matter is uninteresting – — it is that they don’t have the same fears overseas…
Spiritcatcher @ 111
I dream of being able to talk to dear friends abroad without being wiretapped.
Naomi Wolf @ 102
The view is that not only are we in the same book, but we are on the same page. ;0)
RE: 11/6.
Folks who subscribe or read Harpers have had this date since the Oct. issue came out. I’ve been circulating it among my friends and noted it here at least twice. I’ve already received one email (last week) from my DOCTOR, for heavens’ sake, who was emailing everyone on her email list…..
So, I think there’s some reason to support 11/6, rather than coming up with our own date. What we need is to synchronize with folks….
Naomi Wolf @ 103
Yes’m! We certainly need broad shoulders… The Lake is an awesome place to look for ‘em…!!! *g*
katymine @ 108
I agree. I know I would get the same reaction in my workplace. They’re more interested in watching the Broncos lose.
Naomi Wolf @ 110
And who among us can afford to do that for any length of time? Once upon a time it could work, but when employers can cut you off for the crime of speaking your own mind on your own time and when people live paycheck to paycheck and you have a government that just doesn’t give a shit anymore about what normal sane people think because their silence is drowned out by a media pusshole that feeds on itself….what do you do?
The system worked because we all believed in it and it was designed to check the worst impulses of human beings. Neither applies anymore.
The Republic is Dead in all but name already.
Welcome to the Empire.
Naomi Wolf @ 114
This article was in the SF Gate/Chronicle last week–only ran online but it was one of the best articles I’ve seen so far.

Anyone think the stories in Naomi’s post are all isolated incidents?
Me neither
Look at the map
Naomi Wolf @ 110
No starbucks while striking? *g
Phule @ 109
I understand your view but truly we have to think of this as a dark rocky passage and we are groping for the light and we can get through it. It is very important when surrounded by evil or menaced by evil not to let evil have its way with our consciousness — they want us to give up and assume the worst is already inevitable. Richard Evans the historian writes that if in 31, 32 Germans had stood up to the gathering stormclouds history could have changed. We have to stand up.
Laura Doty @ 117
That seems right.
Naomi Wolf @ 125
And be sure to contact the AFC.
http://www.americanfreedomcampaign.org
Phule @ 120
I know I sound like a squeaky wheel. But I think this country has been through some pretty dark times in history. And the struggle against evil wasn’t pretty (e.g. Civil Rights Movement). I think we owe it to those who died for the right to vote, etc. etc. to keep plugging in every direction.
OT..I can’t find Naomi Wolf’s comment about IBM and the Nazi’s..I read this book 6 years and I still think about it.
“IBM and the Holocaust: The Strategic Alliance between Nazi Germany and America’s Most Powerful Corporation by Edwin Black (Hardcover – 2001)”
This book is worth reading..the bottom line..IBM and it’s CEO supported the Germans and the German War and extermination machinery ran on IBM punch cards and equipment. IBM makes I.G. Farben’s part in the Holocuast look trivial.
tw3k @ 123
I think being there is more important than not buying anything. Non consuming was not part of the great democracy movements, or the civil rights movements, that is more of a globalization/environmental statement — and it excludes a lot of people who should be there — the most important thing is your body and empty workplaces. though please can the union people confer with their leaders to see what can be done to protect them –
Naomi Wolf @ 124
I agree. And as all us SF nerds know, Fear is the mindkiller.
katymine @ 108
The MSM has awesome powers to overlook what’s happening right in fro- Hey look! Britney Spears changed her hair!
Naomi Wolf @ 124
Fair enough. But we aren’t in 31 or 32 now. Our 1931 occurred in 2000, when this illegitimate regime took power. We are in 1938.
Does that make it too late?
Starbucks employees need to be on strike too.
I am bummed I have to run an errand. Naomi Wolf, I wish you would come back to the Lake.
Jane is upstairs re: S-Chip
Spiritcatcher @ 111
Aren’t the Patriot Act and the Protect America Act, the Homeland Security acts, the TSA and this lastest FISA abomination the very essence of “emergency acts?”
mui @ 134
She’ll be doing a salon in November. :D
Everyone thank you so much — this is very exciting. This kind of feels like Prague 1968. We have the beginning of a plan. Let me suggest that local sit-down-for the constitution strikes take place on the very steps of the town halls or the statehouses. or on city greens. libraries, schools, public places where they can’t say you are not allowed to be. I have to go speak now at Kane Hall in Seattle then in San Francisco tomorrow, then home. I feel inspired and hopeful. Just like the threat gives me chills, the mobilization gives me a better kind of chill — the sense of things changing. Thank you all so much for yoru leadership.
So–folks, how to coordinate this? Some of this is working in our own locales, some of this is working nationally. How to do via FDL….ideas????
And for those of you in the Bay area, she’s at Mrs. Dalloway’s in Berkeley on Saturday.
We did stand up in 2006. It didn’t do any good.
Its not just people anymore, they’ve gotten into the entire system. Executive, Judicial, Legislative, Media, Economic, Military…we are well past the point where 31 or 32 Germans standing up would stop the brownshirts in the night. We are now balanced on the edge of a knife, one incident away from the hunting of the opposition in Africa or the Anarchy in Iraq. I don’t see a light leading out, I’m afraid. Just a long drop below.
Naomi Wolf @ 114
And yet Ann Coulter always gets a megaphone to spew her eliminationist bile
Curious, isn’t it?
Come back often Naomi!
PeteCO @ 119
But not necessarily -
I went to a meeting with managers – all men except for me – and I started talking about the harm allowing people like Ann Coulter access to the media when there is no rebuttal. I figured that maybe one guy in the room might give me a wink.
These are all utility electrical engineers – real “black and white/no shades of grey” guys. Every single one of them in the room a) knew who Ann Coulter is, b) think she is a dangerous flake, and c) wanted the media to either start ignoring her and Lynn Cheney et al. OR seeing some balance.
When utility engineers start sounding like they are concerned about the Right, you KNOW that the message is getting out there.
Hi Naomi. I’ve long admired your work, and it’s an honor to speak to you here tonight.
We are in fact in the grip of a nascent police state, IMO. I believe that the dissolution of the information- sharing restrictions between all intelligence, law enforcement, immigration, financial, and legal institutions effectively makes them a monolithic agency, essentially an American KGB. Do you agree? And if so, how in the hell do we undo this?
More on the Enabling Acts at my place, if so interested.
My wife also sends her regards.
Naomi Wolf @ 129
I was only joking but in all seriousness a consumer strike would only add weight to the general movement.
It is easy enought to bring your own provisions with attention paid for those with special needs.
Phule @ 141
We can do it with hope. We can do it without hope. It is only important that we do it.
Rights Of All Workers

Spiritcatcher @ 111
How about Gleischaltung also?
Steve-AR @ 128
Steve – And IBM MADE those punch cards and punch card machines right here in my home town in Upstate New York.
And people DID know what they were doing. One of our local newspaper collumnists also did a book about that – there was a lot of “oh, the shock, the horror!” when that came out.
For other reasons, I will never cry again – 20 years and still counting. However, I have a literature bag that I am unwilling to carry on our next flight – it has the “subversive text” of the first fucking amendment in the Bill Of Rights on it!
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances” – dare I show a subversive item like this to Bush’s TSA and get on the no-fly list?
pow wow @ 58
this post (and pow wow’s comment) remind me of milton mayer’s “they thought they were free: the germans 1933-45″ (published in 1955. here’s a bit from chapter 13, But Then It Was Too Late, that i typed up to share (my bold):
thank you naomi, for looking forward, telling us of the end you see and making the call to resist.

Let’s go, we are ready here in Bend, Oregon. I Just talked to one of the Code Pink ladies here, and in the conversation we were trying to come up with ways to ratchet up the numbers and quality of our protests so that they were more effective. we didn’t come up with anything concrete but as an aside I was listening to the radio on my way home and heard an ad about my congressman Greg Walden(R) and his stance on the SCHIP
tw3k @ 156
????
Sorry all I hit the submit button with my dainty hands. I was trying to say that Mr. Waldens stance on the SCHIP bill was no and this ad let people know that, so what beside money will it take for us to take this to the airwaves, newspapers, and other formats on a grander scale.
I thought I was mad before I read Naomi’s post, which is excellent, I am beside myself with anger.

Thanks for that and we must stop this death by a thousand cuts.
Dear Naomi,
Of course I’m appalled that an American needs to warn other Americans against the fascist state that exists today. And, of course, I’m appalled that our elected representatives seem so incapable, or reluctant, or feckless, or truly powerless to put a stop to it. But most of all I’m appalled to feel as if the relatively few of us who are paying attention, and who are relatively informed compared to the ’silent majority’, are lonely in our homes and workplaces–longing for a group to which to belong. It used to be that people demonstrated, peacefully, got arrested, or abused, or jailed for the night. It used to be that the media (now the moribund media) were interested in exposing the rot. That was the 1960s. Today we share this powerful tool, the ‘tubes’ as (soon to be ex-) Senator Stevens has described the internet, and yet have the feeling that we’re still a voice (or, at best, many little voices crying in the wilderness). Your post, here, today, has given me hope that my perceptions are mistaken. Let us hope that, after the sacrifices of Pat Tilman and others, we begin to see more, and more numerous, groups of like-minded people with the goal of curbing this monstrous regime. Maybe it’ll be a ‘rogue’ Inspector General, or an uncompromised (and uncompromising) congressional representative, or a White House staffer, or all of them, who cracks open the putrid egg to let the country smell the decay. Let us hope so.

No one will read this but I am with you, you are not alone. People might find this sophomoric but hey that’s me. When you have intent about doing something, real focus, usually what happens is you achieve your goal and it only requires intent, all that follows is a result of that intent and it has an energy that permeates all that you do and spreads to those in contact with you and that is what is happening right here on the tubes.
Keyboard up commando.
Steve-AR @ 45
I disagree, Hillary is not the correct voice. She is a political creature raised in the myth of bi-partisanship. She is also distrusted by too many based on the perpetual smear campaign from the right. So her message is easier to shout down.
But there is another reason that she is wrong and that is dynasty. America needs a vibrant new leader not Bush Clinton Bush Clinton ad nauseum.
Frankly almost everyone in Washington needs run out of town. The corpution is too entrenched.
Naomi, you summed it up “beautifully”, even though what you said is a horror.
The ROM (repubican owned media) is complicit in all of this too. Without the REAL MEDIA, the people of America really don’t have a voice. Besides ourselves, who do we really have on our side? The Congress? Nope. The military? Nope. What else is left? It comes back to us. We are the only ones who can take our country back and we have to get rid of the fear in doing so. Which is worse…being billy clubbed today and getting our country back or being taken into custody never to be seen again and being billy clubbed daily for the rest of our lives?
Oh boy. I want to fight.
Maddy @ 161
I read it, Maddy. Thanks.
Yikes!
I fully understand with Naomi’s feelings in the airport and and agree with her outlook that the time to do something about this is now, but it is really scary. (The people in Burma tried to do something about their authoritarian leaders…)
I live in a disproportionately Red area. I feel the need to own multiple guns. I think we need 21st century militias. I think I’ll look into the relevant law…
What Naomi says is true. I have said that there will be no elections in 2008 and have been told its left wing tripe.
The MCA of 2006 gives the President the right to label anyone including American Citizens Enemy Combatants. You can be arrested without a warrant under the Patriot Act, you can be imprisoned without the right to a lawyer or court hearing under the MCA 2006 Act {remember as an enemy combatant you have no Habeas Corpus rights} and your assets can be seized under Executive Order.
Do any of you believe that this President will give up the same powers Hitler had to a Democrat? Any Democrat including Hillary Clinton?
There is a major Military Martial Law exercise taking place I believe come October 15 to the 20th. I believe this is a dry run for the real thing. He now has his own private army of killers being paid for with tax payer dollars and their loyalty will lay with the person who’s paying them. We all know who that is don’t we?
So do you still believe that we can get our democracy back through the election process? I think you are all speaking out too late now as we have probably passed the point of no return.
Be prepared as War with Iran is coming as is Martial Law.
What oceans can protect US from these fascist conservative Republicans and even a few fascist conservative Democrats?
Forget al Qaeda.
The greatest danger to our democracy and our freedoms is exactly the same danger pre-World War II Germany experienced…from within.
No oceans, therefore, can protect US, because the ones out to destroy our country, our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, are already here. Bush. Cheney. Addington. Perle. Feith. Gonzales. Rice. Alito. Roberts. Scalia. Thomas. Robertson. Dobson. Coulter. Malkin. O’Reilly. Limbaugh. Everyone at PNAC. Murdoch. And many other devious, evil people, driven mad by their insatiable lust for power.
So, just like during the American Revolution, we must save ourselves. We must stand up for and stand by those patriots who are the true defenders of our democracy and our freedoms. The lives and freedoms of our nation’s children depend on it.
Naomi Wolf -
Thank you for your book and your work – and your strength.
Thanks also for the reminder about the cost of paraylsis: tyranny.
Naomi, I’m a shrink with a fellowship in PTSD…
(and an honorary BFD from the Cheech and Chong Academy).
You describe how the proto-tyrants use fear as a weapon to silence us, and hence divide us.
The most powerful form of behavioral conditioning is intermittent* reinforcement.
Take away an exemplary, arbitrary few – frighten the rest into silence.
Naomi, the fear you describe across the nation just tears at me. The Brownshirts really have created a paralyzing illusion.
I totally believe your descriptions – and your conclusions – but I’m commenting to directly address the fear.
I help EarthFirst! – and have for over a decade. I help the Ruckus Society. I’ve co-oordinated (in 2000) medical clinics for huge protests in DC and LA. The day after Seattle’s WTO mass chemical warfare, the DAN network pushed me out in front of the world media….and I told them that if local law enforcement were a person they’d be on involuntary psychiatric committment for “danger to others.”
Last month I had the pleasure of spending time with my friend Jonathan Paul. I wanted to spend time with him before he began his fifty month Federal prison sentence for eco-arson.
Why I am telling you this?
Because the Tyrants’ power is less than our Fear makes it out to be.
Because I have been “out” as a non-violent activist helping large groups of non-violent activists [”force multiplier” is the quaint military phrase] for over a decade. Arrested, acquitted on Constitutional grounds, filed suit in Federal Court…
Arrested other times for non-violent CD.. results all infractions or misdemeanors with jail time limited to arrest. And some fines.
And when I plead guilty to my arrests for non-violent civil disobedience, the CA Medical Board writes me and we discuss the arrests and I continue practicing medicine with a valid license.
We can confront Power and survive and even be happy.
And I still fly and drive and travel and write (some here at the Lake) and refer to all this ..
too often, if anything…
to send the message that We Can Still Stand – and We Won’t Back Down.
I’ll be at my friend Satya’s “retirement :)” party at the Ruckus Society next week. He and some other great folk just dropped the banner..
about Tibet..
off the Great Wall..
Satya and my Ruckus friends ahve been helping with mega-protests for years.
And we all still fly and travel.
Naomi, I’m not at all disputing your fadcts or your conclusions.
Folks here at the Lake probably hear more than desired about my activist life: I apologize for boring them and you with yet another activist’s history.
Yet – at a time of fear of just speaking – I’m telling you and others about my speaking…
I want everyone to know we all have a voice – and we can still use it.
Remember Spartacus?
Yeah – hokey.
We really all are there.
We can all step forward together, or perish one by one.
Should we not attempt the former, we shall suffer the latter in any event.
At worst, we will perish – just as if we did nothing.
Non-violent collective resistance will save our Republic.
Speaking out is an act of Freedom – and a light in the dark.
Speaking out together is an act of Liberation.
Naomi, thank for the invitation: I accept.

Public Takeover.
I’m glad people are saying they will not be silenced. Federal government decisions to immunize illegal actdivity does not bind the States to also do nothing. Just because Congress refuses to enforce the law, it doesn’t mean that the State AG’s cannot be mobilized to enforce state law against the President, members of Congress, or telecoms.
Oh my goddess!!! Naomi Wolf is linking to me?!? ‘Scuse me for being a little starstruck here, but wow! I love your work, Sister! The Beauty Myth changed my life in very significant ways.
I hope you are able to change your country in significant ways, too. This is good and important work you’re doing.
I’ve collaborated with several American and Canadian women on My Heart Is Moved, a CD of songs based on the Earth Charter which talks about how we need to be in relationship with ourselves, each other, the planet and the larger whole. The title piece comes from the line of a poem by another American sister, Adrienne Rich.
The CD begins launching in North America next week…
IMPEACH
I am so excited to see people talking about a General Strike. I asked Amy Goodman why we don’t start striking back before the Iraq invasion. It is the next step of resistance after protest, which is obviously doing little.
November 6 sounds great, but remember this will have to be repeated again and again before it reaches the masses. We should be prepared to strike once a month to begin with and use the threat of increasing to once a week as a tactic. It must become visible. Sure the “righteous” worker-slaves will hate us for the freedom we take to go on strike, but who are we striking against?
Every federal agency and every big company that profits from the war machine. They should all be “fair game” as far as places to show up and picket.
On 2nd thought perhaps there should be designated PEACE PARKS in major cities for this work. Visible places.
Hmm, intersections I don’t know about. Striking is Level 1 and Getting Arrested level 2. Having just had a kid I don’t know how quick I can go to Level 2. Maybe the wife will let me get arrested at some point.
We also need a press dept which hits the media hard with salient “talking points” as to why and what we are striking for.
ON STRIKE AGAINST CHENEY’S PLAN FOR MARTIAL LAW…?
Also, can we be independent and unified at the same time? Nothing like being part of a movement and some a**hole tells you your sign isn’t allowed.
I want to be part.

Kirk, thanks for the post. One of my mantras when I feel fear is part of a poem from Frank Herberts Dune; Fear is a mind killer, Fear is a slow death, I will face my fear and let it pass through me. It is not word for word it doesn’t need to be, it has helped me for many years. Today I have no fear of them, only a sadness that fills my whole being and I have had enough goddamn it. Spartacus is no slouch either eh hoser. We will prevail.
letterrip!! i’m an American!! won’t back down!! god help us all!!
let’s do it!!!
At the least the people of Potrero California are brave enough to stand up to Blackwater. Good on them, I say.
There is but one man who stands against this tyranny that is infesting this country and his name is Ron Paul.
Do yourself and your children a favor and research him. Don;t just take my word or some Internet post about him do the research.
Look at his entire congressional voting record, look at the issues he stands for, look at who is attacking him and why and you’ll find your answers.
I can tell you one thing without a doubt – any democrat candidate will simply be more of the same tyranny. in fact it will be much more.
Don’t vote for the party that is what “they” want you to do. It’s one of their favorite tactics. To “divide & conquer” that is why we have a two party system.
In reality the parties are the same.
Ron Paul has infiltrated the republican base because it;s the only way he can get into the mainstream controlled media.
Don’t vote for the party or who “they” say is popular, vote for the leader who will fight for YOUR best interests and YOUR freedom and liberty.
Ron Paul is often compared to the founding father Thomas Jefferson for a reason.

We don’t need a Republican…
We don’t need a Democrat…
We don’t need an independent…
We don’t need any more division…
We need to fight to restore this republic and restore the constitution.
I only see one person who is willing to do that and that’s Ron Paul. Do you see anyone else concerned about the constitution and restoring the republic? Seriously… do you?
We need to destroy the two party system and grow into a “peoples” system. We the people united.

in my opinion, one general strike doesn’t do it. you need a series of coordinated strikes, one after another after another, to really put the fear in the hearts of people running the machine. we can’t hurt them their way, with violence, but we can certainly hurt their bottom line, which is all that really matters to them.
I’ve thought lately that a pin of the Constitution, or something that looks like the “We” in the preamble would be a more fitting display of patriotism than those flag pins. It’s too easy to wave a flag; any moron and/or hypocrite can do it (and they do). To me the flag pins are becoming symbols of hypocrisy. But the Constitution – that’s a little different.

The girl who could work at any law firm she chose, and chose this one?
“We represent management in all forms of state and federal litigation involving claims under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the American with Disabilities Act, and the Family and Medical Leave Act. We practice before governmental agencies, including, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the National Labor Relations Board, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, the Mine and Safety Health Administration, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and other Department of Labor agencies. We also advise clients on union avoidance, organizing campaigns and union representation elections.”

Not so much, I’m guessing.
I don’t want to tear up Noami, I want to ask you to marry me!
While I don’t believe I am on a watch list (yet) I have no problem being on one. All it does is REALLY piss me off. The more “they” push me the more stubborn and angry I get and then I push back. I cannot back down, it just isn’t in me. Defiance all the way.
While I understand why you may have “edited” your belongings, I would not. In fact, I would almost place something in my luggage just to tweak the bastards rifling my sh*t. I think I need to buy one of those T-shirts with “Worlds Most Dangerous Terrorists” on it with pictures of Bush and Cheney beneath it just to place in my luggage when I fly.
Bite me, Gestapo.

You rock!
Naomi,
Love you and your work and have for many years — I’m a neighbor in NYC. (See you at Doma sometimes.) I am totally behind this, totally inspired, absolutely ready to take to the streets. But I’m thinking of the 2004 RNC police state, what happened to the protesters, and a little bit afraid that since we clearly know they’re already watching, they’ll begin preparing to lock us down the moment that we begin preparing to wake up, stand up, and then sit down in the name of the constitution. Not that I’m afraid to be arrested, but how do we deal with the massive police presence and preparation that will be set to fence us in en masse a la Bloomberg a few years ago? How do we deal with the right wing talk machine that will begin to paint us as zealots and hippies the moment they get wind of it? How do we take action against that?
I am sorry to be the negative one here, but do you honestly think Hillary is going to be any different than the rest of the politicians? She is as power hungry as the rest of them, and with Bill in tow, she is going to need to buy rubber sheets for the Lincoln Bedroom.
As far as this whole big brother controversy goes, what did you guys think would happen? It was ok when the government is tracking lawful gun owners in a database (or any other entity liberals didn’t agree with). Now that it is working against you, the bitching and complaining starts. That’s why you do not let these seeds get planted!!!
In regards to Blackwater, nobody on this forum or the news knows what happened that day. Being former military, I can honestly tell you they did not “butcher 17 Iraqi civilians in cold blood”. Something happened that caused them to react that way…NO soldier or contractor would do that. Believe it or not, we are human beings and do not kill for the sake of killing. Most soldiers pray they never have to kill a person….as we know that is something you have to live with forever.
Lastly, even with everything going on now, this is still the greatest country in the world. To the person who said “Specifically, what do we do? I contribute to ACLU, to MoveOn, to progressive candidates. What?”, save your money, they are worthless organizations. Use that money to get a good education and move yourself to a position in the world where you can make a difference (if that is what you truly believe). That is where the change will occur. Also, skip getting on your pink t-shirts, it’s a waste of time and makes you look like idiots.
One last thing, a lot of Germans did stand up against Hitler, German Catholics even, they lost their lives/families. When the mass concentration of Jews were being rounded up, even more died. By the end of the war, there were hardly no Catholic priests or nuns in the entire country because they were killed, or had to flee.
The Oracle @ 167
I finished reading through a lot of these comments, and I must say most of you are … [edited by mod] … and obviously does not now what the founding fathers truly believed in. Review Thomas Jefferson’s letters to get an understanding on what he was thinking at the time, then come back and spew your rhetoric.
To all of you that think us conservatives as fascists, remember we are your neighbors and friends that go to work every day, pay taxes and make this country move forward. Trust me, if there was ever a chance that the government was as out of control as many of you think, we would be standing right beside you fighting to the death. Speaking of which, if all of you really think things are this bad, why are you not putting everything on the line (even your lives)? I say this also to the environmental crowd who think the earth is melting…if things are this bad, why are we not shutting down everything that may be contributing to global warming. Why is Al Gore not shutting down two of his three 10,000 sq ft homes (anyone want to guess how much energy is needed to heat/cool those houses) to help this global crisis? Jeeze, 25 years ago, we were having a global cooling crisis.

This is exactly the problem. Your blindness to all of the evil that is going on in this country and around the world due to this fascist administration is exactly what we have been discussing. You and all your fellow blind citizens have nothing to fear, we will not be attacking the right as we have been attacked. However, we will be taking power for the foreseeable future as the right has totally failed this country at every level and in every way possible and has done everything in its power to destroy the constitution and the very freedoms that this country was founded on. The graft that has accompanied this is on a truly titanic scale, and hopefully there will be prosecutions. However, the average blind conservative has nothing to fear less being sidelined from power for as long as it can be managed. We are very well aware of the fact that conservatives are our friends and neighbors that have constitutional rights as well. I can’t count on both hands and both feet the number of friends and relatives that I never discuss these matters with as it is pointless and only serves to end communication. Likewise, a much greater number of people I know, meaning all Democrats, all Independents, and quite a few Republicans, see the Bush administration as something that must be completely expunged from our national psyche by any and all legal means necessary. The left has been out of power for quite a while, and now it is your turn. A replay of the election of 1932 is very, very possible. Read it and weep.
Great! Nov 6th it is and I WILL be one of the peaceful protestors! Thanks Naomi for all that you do in spreading the word against tyranny that is now upon all of us. Kudos to Ron Paul the only hope and to James Joyce for recognizing that in order to have freedom and liberty, Our speaker and next president must and I repeat MUST be a champion of the United States of Americas Constitution. The only one speaking of Freedom and Liberty is Ron Paul…PERIOD. As they say, our 2 party system consists of one left leg and one right leg BOTH moving in the very SAME direction…towards fascism. We The People say, ENOUGH ALREADY. If you happen to watch the main stream news Who do you see them covering mostly? It is who “they” think you need to vote for. Please believe that the ones the MSM push is not going to be the leader with your best interest in mind. Ron Paul is the man to lead our country away from this dictatorial state that has been subtly and almost subliminally forced upon americans. It is up to americans to take our country back, for the sake of our very existence as a sovereign and FREE peoples.
Do you guys know what the CFR is? I’m being serious. Do you have any clue how dangerous that organization is to this country?
Now for the big question – why are the majority of the GOP and Democrat candidates members of this organization?
Yeah, your alarm bells should be ringing like crazy.
Stop supporting candidates that the talking heads tell you are popular and use your head to do some real hard research.

Carlo @ 190
What?
You keep refering to this administration, I’m refering to all of them in general. Bush is the least of your problems, at least you all know where you stand with him. You keep refering to him as “Fascist”, how has he acted in a fascist manor to the American people?
Trust me, I am not blind. I look at the world today and see things that make me sick. I rarely watch the news anymore just cause I don’t want to see how many people were killed in random acts of violence across the US. The good & moral things I grew up with are being eroded in an alarming rate. Just recently I bought tickets for a Red Wings game in Detroit. When walking to the game with my wife, I was told by the hotel manager not to walk there as I am TOO WHITE (meaning I would be killed before I would walk the 5 blocks to get there).
I also see Congress men doing crude things in bathrooms I don’t want to think about. I see congress men/women taking bribes and putting it into their freezers, or packing their husbands business’s bank accounts full of cash from the American ATM.
My point with all this is…let Bush go…He’s done in a year anyway, and Chenney isn’t going to be doing anything after this. Use your energies. Hold these other idiots accountable for their actions….ALL OF THEM regardless of party affiliation.
I am not blind, and I tend to look at both side’s of everything. I suggest you do the same.
Ron Paul The Only Hope @ 192
Are you refering to this http://www.cfr.org/ ?

Kurt @ 189
The “Label”of republican no longer means “conservative”. I have been a labeled republican of 30 yrs and I am very conservative. The republican party “label” no longer fits me, as there is NOTHING “conservative” about it. It no longer believes in smaller, limited government and upholds to its “constitutional” beliefs of no nation building or policing the world. Its leader whom I regret having supported ran on those exact princples and has stated on many occasions that he IS THE DECIDER and that the constitution is just a “G-D&#@N piece of paper.” The phony 2 party system of labeling one either a republican or democrat is just what it is..A useless label of what is made up of all “AMERICANS”. Why didn’t you move to the left of the page and post the unconstitutional patriot act while you were at it? How about extortion being so called legal through the IRS when in fact it was supposed to be a voluntary act to give ONLY if an american citizen was inclined to give? How about giving power back to the people instead of this now fascist secretive government controling and using surveillance on every street corner? You are still sleepwalking as I did when I too voted for this corrupt and secretive administration. This is the most secretive government in our nations history and where there are secrets kept from the people, You can BELIEVE there IS much to hide. Hopefully you will turnoff your television and get off your couch and do something to contribute to preserving your nations constitutionally smaller, limited governmental principles.
Kurt @ 194
I will only reply to the last part of the comment. There is no question that the Democratic party is not a be-all and end-all to solve many of these problems. I’m not personally thrilled with my congresswoman but she does vote the way I would 95% of the time. My Demo senator I agree with 75% of the time, and the Repub one manages to about 20% of the time and is definitely on the left wing of the Repubs right now. All have fairly clean records ethically. My point is that there is a powerful and growing Progressive caucus within the Democratic party that is having increasing influence and will not be ignored. There will be several primary challenges to non-progressive Democrats in 2008. No, the Democratic party is not totally clean, but the Progressives will do their best to make it so. Our ethical problems are miniscule compared to the institutionalized Republican graft of the last 6-7 years. Don’t be too surprised if some major inter-party splits occur after the overwhelming victory. Luckily we will only need simple majorities to pass legislation.
Kurt @ 189
Kurt @ 189
When will we ever get a conservative viewpoint that isn’t laced with insults and invective? You really need to evolve past ‘hit them with a bigger club’ because like our current foreign policy, it negates any good intentions or valid points you might have.
That said, so we should await the conservatives’ declaration that the government’s out of control? You will be the arbiters of good government? All the polls I see now show a growing majority of Americans feel we’re on the wrong track in Iraq, and that our intrusion there was a mistake. If our government was ‘in control’ and responsive to it’s constituents, we’d see a change in tack by now, no? Instead we get escalation. What part of ‘out of control’ are you struggling with?
Sorry, but most of us (including the rest of the world) have decided that the time has passed for change and that this administration is doing more harm than good.
Lastly, if you want to cite Jefferson, please do cuz I don’t know what specifically you’re talking about.
C.
Understood Carlo, you seem to have the same frustrations as I have with the Republican party. Maybe people will vote their wills, instead of the party…put an end to the Clintons, Bush’s and like.
Kate, I agree with almost all of what you said. Try out this party for size http://www.constitutionparty.com/ . It may be more closely aligned to your belief structure. I have liked what I have seen so far.
Kurt @ 199
Hi Kurt!
That is so awsome! I recently became a proud member of the CP. :)
The Oracle @ 167
Exactly my sentiments.
BTW, no one should count on elections next fall. Does it make any sense to believe that this criminal administration intends to relinquish power and face potential criminal prosecutions here and in the Hague?
Not likely.
Let this be the first of many general strikes and let us pray that we can save our liberty without loss of life.
Love Naomi Wolf. Her book is on my wish list. I have been doing layman’s research on the rise of the NSDAP in Germany for about a year now. I’m currently reading “The Origins of Totalitarianism” by Hannah Arendt.
Many of the comments here are ones I could easily have written. However, I am driven to reply to Kurt and Kate’s latest posts about the CP.
I had never heard of the CP until now, so I took a look at their website. I saw what they stood for, and several things gave me the chills. I quote directly from the website:
The Democrats and Republicans have squandered the Founders’ legacy of liberty and justice under the Constitution. Countless government officials in the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government ignore their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution.
Join the Constitution Party in its work to restore our government to its Constitutional limits and our law to its Biblical foundations.
Seven Principles of the Constitution Party are:
1. Life: For all human beings, from conception to natural death;
2. Liberty: Freedom of conscience and actions for the self-governed individual;
3. Family: One husband and one wife with their children as divinely instituted;
4. Property: Each individual’s right to own and steward personal property without government burden;
5. Constitution: and Bill of Rights interpreted according to the actual intent of the Founding Fathers;
6. States’ Rights: Everything not specifically delegated by the Constitution to the federal government is reserved for the state and local jurisdictions;
7. American Sovereignty: American government committed to the protection of the borders, trade, and common defense of Americans, and not entangled in foreign alliances.
Emphasis added. Anybody a little uneasy about the CP after reading that, or am I misunderstanding something?
Hey Naomi,
Much as I appreciate your efforts, I must admit that I am dismayed to hear that you are throwing books away to avoid annoying TSA employees when you fly. You should know better: If in fact there are adverse personal consequences for your views and work, then you are flagged from the moment you pick up your boarding pass, and no amount of voluntary book burning will make a difference one way or the other.
I’m always amazed by the fear people express with regard to what might happen to them if they “speak out”. Frankly, nothing happens, unless you happen to be an insider working directly for the bastards. I am on every “enemies list” there is, unless the bastards simply aren’t doing their jobs: A direct supporter of the Sami AlArian family (they used to live in my neighborhood), active participant in public anti-war activities (with my full name in documents passed out), and of course, I make as much noise as I can on the Internet.
The impact on my life? Zero. No signs of surveillance or harassment. I speak freely about the 9-11 hoax in air terminals and nobody cares. Years ago I actually was targeted by a police agency, and I know exactly what the signs are; I have been working hard against the war agenda for six years now and absolutely nothing has happened to me because of it – other than new friends and the certain knowledge that I have done, and will do, everything in my power to stop the NeoCon/NeoLiberal murder machine.
The cowardice of the American people is a constant source of dismay.. on the one hand, cowards who endorse mass murder because they fear fictional boogeymen, and on the other hand, cowards who won’t voice their objections because they fear reprisals.
Sorry about that, can somebody delete the redundant copies? I only hit the Submit button once, but…
I suppose comments are n not closed here?
