All hail The Prince of Darkness! Just look at the little tidbit he dropped off for us last week, courtesy of Bloggernista:
Conservative columnist Robert Novak said today that Republicans in the Senate knew about Larry Craig’s bathroom toe-tapping ways before the story break of his arrest in the Minneapolis airport, but they kept the story “in the closet.”
I have talked to several of my sources in the Senate, and this came as a surprise to me…They knew about it. They knew that he had this problem, and it was in the closet. And it was not just a homosexual relationship. It was this weird conduct. They didn’t do anything about it.
“They knew about it.”
Do the Republicans really think that Larry Craig won’t rub this in their faces if they try to use Senate ethics hearings to shame him out of office?
Do the Republicans really think that Larry Craig won’t use those hearings to bring up similar behavior by his fellow Republicans?
They’d better think again.

Hiya PW
PW!!!
ha
PW!!!
He’d like to rub their faces somewhere else.
If Larry Craig is going to take it on the chin from the Senate Ethics Committee,
so should Diaper Dave.
Wait a minute — Novakula did something that wasn’t evil? I think I’m going to need another beer.
Aloha, Ya’ll! Dang, PW, you got the honors today since Jane is at the Ball Game??? Excellent posts!
Let’s recall that Mike Rogers got the name of Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) from a closeted GOP staffer seeking to “trade up” information on toilet sex with Craig. There are out gay staffers to the leadership team (Santorum, among others) who must have told their bosses.
Of course they knew. But it’s great to have confirmation from Novakula. How hated must he be!
Good evening PW. This is from TPM, but does not elaborate:
I read or heard somewhere earlier today that the GOP will censure Larry, but won’t kick him out. And as for Rove’s pal Novak? Well… he ought to know all about deception (keeping things quiet) and Republican chicanery.
Speaking of proper targets for the Ethics Committe, how about Richard Shelby ?
Or has the World’s Greatest Deliberative Body decided that
going around to CIA stations trying to foment a “revolution” in the agency
is acceptable behavior?
Just asking.
I actually interpreted this “leak” as being a warning to Craig from the GOP about what information they have on him.
Of course, they did! Anybody who has worked for a living knows that if someone’s got this kind of secret, someone, and possibly many someones, knows about it or has a “feeling” about it, or it’s the worst kept secret. I would venture to say, there are very few members of Congress that don’t have some people within their inner sactums knowing more about them than others thought they knew. It’s not that big a town and the people involved are way too well connected!
ok, i’m obviously confused.
i thought richard perle was the prince of darkness and robert novak was the douchebag of liberty.
there’s just too much important information to keep up with…
Rob Zuber, you might be right but I tink Craig has already made it clear he doesn’t care; he’s ruined anyway. He’s doubling down..
Has Leslie Stahl of 60 Minutes done a story on Larry Craig yet?
Or is Stahl stalling on the stall story?
Strange, how this didn’t seem to get any traction.
Just like his “recipe”, he was signaling that he knows the scoop on all of them too, and staying is reinforcing it – he’s gonna get them. This might get real interesting. Popcorn.

Washington’s power elites are often referred to as the village. Members of this extended clique probably have heard all the stories and all the rumors. What’s more Larry Craig didn’t just turn gay or look for sex in restrooms just as David Vitter didn’t just start seeing prostitutes. These are behaviors that have been going on for years and their colleagues would have to be deaf, dumb, and blind not to know.

Joe Wilson called Robert Novak a “chronic liar”
Throw some water on Novak maybe he will melt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kwojbxw7014
What a world what a world I’m melting
Hmmm. I’m going to disagree with the thesis here. I think that Larry Craig has a penchant for restroom sex, and I think that a LOT of people knew about it. But I don’t think Larry Craig will use this to his advantage. I don’t think he even can. I think this man is so far in denial that it wouldn’t even occur to him. I don’t think he can even admit–even to himself–that he has sex with other men.
As for the coming ethics probe, I’m not expecting much. I suspect that they’ll just bury it. The Dems don’t need to push the issue, and the Repubs don’t want to.
PeteCO @ 30
WE had the Who!
PeteCO @ 19
Slippery topic.
Oh yeah, they knew.
The question is how did they know…
The next question is how did they use their knowledge?
They’ve been listening in on all kinds of stuff for a very long time now. Did they get this knowledge from spying on Craig? or did he simply wide stance one of the out community?
And once they learned, did they corral him into voting in a certain fashion, and on what votes? This is a guy whose constituency is very distrustful of government, lots of libertarians; did he vote Repug more often than he would have serving that constituency because he was pressured to do so?
And the next question that follows…
What other members of Congress are likewise compromised, unbeknown to us?
When Robert Novak was interviewed by Diane Rehm, I had never heard so many Lies.
http://wamu.org/programs/dr/07/08/06.php
Well Paul Bremer and John Bolton, and Novak are all probably tied for first place.
I am sad for Mrs. Craig and their children.

Bush administration officials say they are confident they will win approval of the broadened wiretapping authority that they secured temporarily in August as Congress rushed toward recess.
Why do I get the feeling that Novak has toe-tapped the Battle Hymn of the Republic before in an airport bathroom?
I think Novak knows a lot more than he’s really telling us.

Hey TexB!
I’m not really surprised at this, the wiretapping worked so well they’ve got enough dirt to make sure they get the votes they want to keep on keeping on.

Are there any minor children? What did Mrs. Craig know and when did she know it? Republican policies that Craig supported hurt most Americans. Offtopic, but I think that in future health care discussions, you should consider what krugman says here:
http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.c…..gle-payer/
His central point is that the democratic plans seem needlessly complicated, and keep insurance companies in the loop (as atrios has repeatedly noted) but that all the democratic plans include a government plan option.
I think he’s right about this–that it will just be a matter of time before most consumers ditch the insurance companies. They know that too, so this will be a huge fight.
It’d be good if we were all on the same page when the battle starts…..
As we’re on the subject of prescient lyrics, check this out.
Ah Frank:
Trouble Every Day
And it’s the same across the nation
Black and white discrimination
Yellin’ “You can’t understand me!”
‘N all that other jazz they hand me
In the papers and TV and
All that mass stupidity
That seems to grow more every day
Each time you hear some nitwit say
He wants to go and do you in
Because the color of your skin
Just don’t appeal to him
(No matter if it’s black or white)
Because he’s out for blood tonight
You know we got to sit around at home
And watch this thing begin
But I bet there won’t be many live
To see it really end
‘Cause the fire in the street
Ain’t like the fire in the heart
And in the eyes of all these people
Don’t you know that this could start
On any street in any town
In any state if any clown
Decides that now’s the time to fight
For some ideal he thinks is right
And if a million more agree
There ain’t no Great Society
As it applies to you and me
Our country isn’t free
And the law refuses to see
If all that you can ever be
Is just a lousy janitor
Unless your uncle owns a store
You know that five in every four
Just won’t amount to nothin’ more
Gonna watch the rats go across the floor
And make up songs about being poor

Teddy, checked your link, but are you saying Rick Santorum is involved in this behavior or just knew about it?
Honey I’m home… did ya miss me?
Did the rethugs wake Novakula from his crypt to slime the Craigster in order to shame Craig into quitting?

Somehow I think Craig figures he has nothing to lose and is hardheaded enough to try to fight it out. He’s already been publicly humiliated, and now has the bane of the wingnuts, the ACLU representing him. Maybe he thinks he can take a few of his compadres down with him??

The notion of a threat to the US is 100% complete nonsense.
Can you see the Iranian landing boats on the beaches of Virgina, the Hamptons and Cape Cod? And of course the beach head a Malibu and Santa Barbara.
The long march of Iranians soldiers over the rockies, down in the great plains, over the Appalachians.
Finally American defeated and occupied by the foreign threat.
We got Sadam before his Special Guards could do the magic across the 48 lower states. We fought them there so we didn’t have to fight them here.
THERE IS NO THREAT TO AMERICA.
Will there be mischief? Massive mischief. Yes and forever. There will always be bank robberies, always be liquor store heists… random acts of violence by disgruntled individuals or groups. This will never stop. But it not a MILITARY threat to america. It is a sociological problem, and a police problem.
America is not now nor will it be under military siege.
But we will lose our country to fascists and corporations who will control our lives.
It’s happening now.

I really think everyone’s overthinking this. It’s just pure denial. He’s in denial over the fact that he was soliciting sex in a men’s room. He’s in denial over the fact that he plead guilty to it. And he’s in denial over the fact that he announced his “intent” to resign. He’s not some grand schemer. He’s just a pathetic old man in denial.
This is definitely on topic wrt the village media:
Caught the last part of a panel of five WH journos on “Role of the WH Press Corps” moderated by (I think) Susan Page (USA Today) on C-Span this afternoon.
Have seldom heard a less self-aware bunch of ____________ (supply your own descriptor)…………….tho’ republics are even less so.
The very last audience question came from a woman with a noticeable (what I am sure some of the panel took to be) “hick” accent. She said something to the effect of, “In the secret? dark? middle of the heartland? country, you are not loved.” I thought, “Oh, bells, she’s going to end all this bs with a ‘liberal’ rant.”
No, dear pups……….not so. She went on to tell them that we the people think the WH media are not doing their jobs; they are not digging to get the full story. Oooooo, touched a nerve with several of the sanctimonious twits, she did. *g*
They apparently like to think of themselves as rottweilers (sp?) when, in fact, most of them have about as much bite as a dead snake.

Hi Raven,

There’s only so much oil on the ground
Sooner or later there won’t be much around
Tell that to your kids while you driving downtown
That there’s only so much oil on the ground
Can’t cut loose without that juice
Can’t cut loose without that juice
If we keep on like we doing things for sure
Will not be cool – It’s a fact
We just ain’t got sufficient fuel
There’s only so much oil in the ground
Sooner or later there won’t be none around
Alternate sources of power must be found
Cause there’s only so much oil in the ground
There’s only so much oil in the earth
It’s a fact of life – for what it’s worth
Something every little boy and girl should know since birth
That there’s only so much oil in the ground
There’s no excuse for our abuse
No excuse for our abuse
We just assume that we will not
Exceed the oil supply
But soon enough the world will watch the wells run dry.

The Goopers are using Novakula to send a message to Craig – No Protection if you stay.
When the Foley Scandal broke, Craig and Allard were two of the prominent names that surfaced as being ‘hypocritical’ anti-gay Senators, along with a reputed 60 Republican Congressmen and women.
Craig has the dirt.
What Craig wants is a quid pro quo – he’ll leave the Senate, if the Senate makes the pending subpoena in the Wilkes case go away.
Ah, the dirty life – If you don’t cover me, I’ll burn you.
Frank Probst @ 96
I suspect you may be right. Still, as long as “REPUBLICAN SENATOR LARRY CRAIG, WHO PLEADED GUILTY TO SOLICITING SEX IN A MENS BATHROOM” is in the news, it can’t hurt.

It’s entertaining – that’s for sure. He should go down in flames in the next Idaho election giving the seat to a Conservative style Democratic Potatohead. Or he could lose first to a fellow Republican in a primary super tuber.
It appears the the RNC doesn’t know whether to sh*t or go blind on this one. They sure would love for Craig to step down now, but he won’t! tee hee! I love the ACLU!

Israel, P.A. negotiators work on memo
10/08/2007
Israeli and Palestinian Authority negotiators began drafting a joint peace declaration.
Draft teams, drawn from among aides to Ehud Olmert and Mahmoud Abbas, met Monday in a secret location in Israel to begin hammering out a declaration that will be made public at next month’s U.S.-sponsored conference on Palestinian statehood.
The Israeli prime minister and Palestinian Authority president formally handed down the agenda negotiations to their advisers last week in what appeared to be a strategy of avoiding top-level diplomatic commitments at this time.
Neither leader is strong enough domestically to broach tough issues such as setting borders, the status of Jerusalem or the fate of Palestinian refugees.
“There is no agreement,” Olmert told the Knesset in reference to his recent talks with Abbas. “Nothing was promised.”
He added, however, that “a spirit of mutual trust has been created” between Israel and the Palestinian Authority since Abbas broke with Hamas Islamists over their seizure of Gaza in June.

Larry almost got caught in the 1982, screwing the Congressional male page, hoohah; quickly married his staffer for cover.
The new Senator from Wyoming also got married after his appointment, allegedly also for cover.
Think things have been bad under George? Prez Rudy will worse.
jane hamsher @ 154
That’s not sad, that’s f*cking hilarious. Hopefully some enterprising souls will get it up on YouTube shortly. It could be his Macaca Moment.
Everyone thinks the Rooskies are jokesters, but the same group….this is awesome and poignant:

I just want to know if Jane booed first and loudest? *s*
darkblack @ 148
Mrs Brown, you’ve got a lovely daughter.
Might be Glove Rommel and his 5 Sons after all…
Hillary Clinton gets much of her campaign money from the same ‘interests’ as does Joe Lieberman. One way or another we’re going to Iran.
PeteCO @ 164
I’ve got the game on, but it didn’t come through on the teevee like it must have live. All cameras and sound focused on the singer, not the crowd, evidently. Pity, I would have enjoyed listening to Rudy getting booed very much.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 167
It ain’t over yet OKK.
OK since we’re talking about crazy tonight, here’s a little analysis of Mr. Bush and his groupies. Take it with a grain, but it seems accurate to me.
Bush Narcissist
madmommy @ 168
It’s a heart-warming thought, isn’t it?!
do-si-do @ 172
shorter: bat shit crazy
jane hamsher @ 156
Can we call him Boo-dy, now? It’s cute and not in a good way. :)
Guess you’re getting your dollar’s worth. HOpe you have video! ;)
madmommy @ 170
They only adjust the mix for Democrats. Recall Howard Dean and the scream. Rudy gets a big pass tonight cuz IOKIYAR.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 167
bingo
MadMommy at 174,
I know, but it explains why batshit crazy comes in a Costco sized container.
Bedtime. Night, all.
Sleep well Pete.
PeteCO @ 179
Bednight. Goodtime all.
madmommy @ 152
Both OD’d within a couple weeks of each other..Janis had just gotten the National recognition that she deserved..crazy times..but it is worse now .
do-si-do @ 173
it’s a great chant, can’t you hear the crowd going:
Boo-dy!
Boo-dy!
Boo-dy!
hackworth @ 176
The game is on WTBS, FOX gets the ALCS and the WS. But as soon as I read Jane’s comment about the booing, my first thought was Fox adjusted the audio. There is a certain amount of cross-polination with the game, TBS promoting the ALCS on FOX, etc. Nothing would surprise me anymore.
jane hamsher @ 143
WiFi at the f***ing b-ball game?
PeteCO @ 179
Nighty night Pete, don’t forget to turn off the stereo. ;)
Elliott @ 183
He’s such a nutter he’d think they were happy to see him.
Steve-AR @ 183
Some people just can not stay away.
TexBetsy @ 188
It’s not just hot dogs and cracker jacks at the ballpark anymore. Now you can get sushi, microbrews and wifi.
OFG – Sweet Home Alabama, by the Leningrad Cowboys and Red Army choir…I’m getting enlightened by the minute…love it:

The only honest trait Rufy displays is his bald head and that was a recent development.
He is an erstwhile combover flapper.
Is “God bless America” always played during the seventh inning stretch?
Elliott @ 183
OMFG!!! I have to run and tell the peeps who’ll be covering the freaking debate in Dearborn MI tomorrow…
They need to chant that outside the venue while they protest on behalf of SCHIP!!
Valley Girl @ 192
Since, 9/11!!!
Valley Girl @ 192
I think they started that in NYC after 9-11. Purists, of course, know that the only appropriate seventh inning stretch song is “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” sung as the sunshine pours down on you from the sky.
Rayne @ 191
They’re in Dearborn tommorrow? Thank the gods i’m 200 miles west of ‘em. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near that part of the city that day. The motorcades will be obnoxious!
Valley Girl @ 192
Used to be “Take Me Out To the Ballgame”, but it changed after 9/11. Ever since then it has been GBA. Some parks do both, it just depends. It’s probably for the best that Harry Carray has passed on. I cannot picture him hanging out of the press box half loaded singing God Bless America.
Rayne @ 193
Well better ask Madmommy at 187…if you can chant it with the proper invection and vile, then yeah.
I think Rudy only checks for sound volume, not content.
Oops I hid my comment in the middle of the quote.
I hate that.
Rayne @ 191
it’s from do-si-do! credit due there
The Lurking Mod fixed it for you do-si-do
Novak needs a new gig…Perhaps along the lines of “We’ll be showing you more of this photo unless we hear from Larry or Lindsay…”
;>)
Hey, some of that’60’s stuff is darn catchy…Here’s one for Rudy, that cold Italian pizza…
madmommy @ 197
In Chicago, it’s *always* “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” If they ever did “God Bless America,” they did it at some other time — not during the seventh inning stretch.
They could tamper with some things, like putting in lights (grrrrr. . .), but not the singing.
I had no idea! Crikey.
Hey, the FDL fairy came and fixed my comment!
I love that!
LS @ 190
These are too cool, LS! What do you suppose is with the hair and the shoes??
Peterr @ 203
Before I die I will sit in the bleachers at Wrigley, while the ivy is lush and green, drink lots of beer and maybe see a bit of the game. In the daytime.
Completely OT, and destined for EPUland:

Speaking of His Rudiness, I got a kick out of this comment from Hunter on Daily Kos…
madmommy @ 207
I spent most of orientation week before my freshman year of college doing that. 8 games in 6 days . . . back when both the El and the beer was cheap.
And before *I* die, I want to sit in the bleachers at Wrigley while the ivy is turning orange, watching the Cubs win a world series game.
Suzanne @ 201
Oooohh. Hey, I’m keeping it clean tonight Suzanne! Save the soap for the next MFer.
Peterr @ 211
It’s got to happen eventually! I wore my Fred McGriff jersey all day sunday and sweated like crazy just to throw a bit of good hoodoo their way. Maybe next year!
CD @ 210
Have you guys seen the really cute detergent commercial with the little kid using his bankie as a cape? Now I know who it is!
I know a sure-fire way to get Late Nite to post: I’ll post a question to the thread.
last nite, we had a little messiness left at the lake when cassie made her sudden departure. tonight, i got the following email from her:
so, my thoughts were to put it up to a vote by the late niter pups – should cassie’s request be granted or should she remain grounded from the diving board for the remainder of the week?
Let the girl swim!
er, dive. She cleaned things up so nicely…
Loo Hoo. @ 216
redemption
gtg pups, night!
it’s been fun
I vote yes, but only to make life easier around here.
do-si-do @ 217
See ya next time!
Loo Hoo. @ 73
Santorum had an out gay staffer who probably knew another out gay staffer who knew a closeted gay staffer who knew a closeted gay staffer who blew Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) in the Union Station men’s room.
Just sayin, it’s a lavender network up there on Capitol Hill. They all know about one another, and the gay mafia leaks to its leadership bosses, just as they did about Foley. Everybody knows everything, they just use it.
selise @ 16
Novak is the Dunce of Prick-ness
Let her dive! She’s got so much style, and she did come back and clean up the whole place. I should have mentioned earlier how spiffy everything looked.
Cassie is a class act! Long may she dive, beginning, I suggest, tonite if she likes…
not having been witness to the alleged mess, I recuse myself as to judging the remedy thereto. sounds like pretty spiffy work however…
Complicated set up there in the Congress. What with all of the different stances…
Loo Hoo. @ 206
Loo Hoo. @ 206
I don’t know about the hair and the shoes other that it is clearly a political statement. The footage accompanying this video clearly points towards their concerns, and oddly enough seems to be condoned by their current system (Putin)…intriguing to say the least. I take it as an action by Putin to say…”hey…we’re cool, and look…we allow people to express themselves (somewhat extreme)…..but……I dunno…I don’t believe it ultimately at all….just “another story”…..
Loo Hoo. @ 227
It’s a regular Peyton Place.
punaise @ 226
Same here.
Although I must say, if she cleaned up not only after herself but also the whole Late Nite crowd, that’s a whole lot of penance.
TeddySanFran @ 222
That’s not a lavender network, that’s a Breck ad.
;>)
Is TRex up tonight? Are we going to hear Ghouliani booed at the BB game?
Well she won’t be diving tonight in any case. Getting late. The decision is for tomorrow.
Loo Hoo. @ 230
dino guy is still typing away furiously on it…
Is it 10:30 in Texas?
Loo Hoo. @ 232
No TRex since thursday night. I’m having withdrawals.

Suzanne @ 215
Reminds me of my mares….
Googled “Guiliani Yankees Cleveland” to see if the booing is up in video. Sorry pups, but no. however, I came away with archival evidence of the high mightiness of the yankees and their number 1 fan ten years ago vis-a-vis the Indians. Three, no sorry, Jeter popped out, two more at bats and we can use this to measure how far the mighty have fallen. Sorry Jane, not sorry Rudy.

I know how to get the new thread up. I’ll post a comment. Evening all!
Betsy, I thought of you and Tex Teen today when I saw this
The Ghouliani thing is “tasty”….Heh.
Suzanne — I definitely vote for Cassie getting to use the board.
LS @ 131
That does give new meaning to the phrase “wretched excess”
PeteCO @ 167
The story behind that song was that the band did a lot of weddings and they’d just change the family name each time they sang it. Then when they made the recording it was ‘Brown’. I’ll bet they did that song a zillion times before they even recorded it.
