Here’s the Sunday Talking Head line-up. (Partially via AP.)
C-Span’s Washington Journal: 7:45am – Richard Land, Southern Baptist Convention – Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, President; 9am – Phoner From Seoul, South Korea: Donald Kirk, Christian Science Monitor, Correspondent; 9:30am – Phoner From New Delhi, India: Jo Johnson, Financial Times, South Asia Bureau Chief.
ABC’s “This Week” — Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt; Gov. Jon Corzine, D-N.J.; New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Democratic presidential candidate.
CBS’ “Face the Nation” — Reps. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., and Adam Putnam, R-Fla.; Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council.
NBC’s “Meet the Press” — Former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., presidential candidate.
CNN’s “Late Edition” — Iraqi President Jalal Talabani; Sudanese Foreign Minister Lam Akol; Susan Rice, foreign policy expert at the Brookings Institution; John Prendergast, co-founder of Enough, a project to abolish genocide; former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan.
“Fox News Sunday” — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.; Patti Solis Doyle, Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign manager.
Rep. Charlie Rangel officially has the most annoying green room of the day, having to share it with Howdy Doody Adam Putnam and Family Research Council president Tony Perkins. That’s enough to give anyone indigestion. Some discussion on SCHIP, but not too many Bushies willing to go on television and defend Ebenezer’s veto and “emergency room health care” plan.
What’s catching your eye in the news and on the blogs this morning?
Today’s photo comes from reader PPP, who took this pix at the Cape May bird sanctuary of what is thought to be a baby swallow. (Not positive on that one. Thoughts from you guys?) Sure is a cute little guy, isn’t he?

Good morning!
Good morning Christy!
They’re handing out free Kristol meth on the WaPo editorial page this morning.
Quick: Are Billy K. and Joey L. talking about Iran, Burma, Venezuela or China?
Good morning Christy!
I assumed it was a baby swallow, too. A cutie!
And I’ll go so far as to suggest a bank swallow, but could be an immature tree swallow according to this reference
land on WJ- staggering. Just staggering! Man spews lies, distortions and bullshit. Who wants to bet that the talking point du jour will be the death of the rep from cancer. Dems should have waited to politicize the loss. Short and simple- Why?
hey Christie– it looks like a bank swallow to me– they have very clear bands around the chest which extends a little down the middle of the chest, which is a perfect match for this bird.
It’s not a baby, but it’s probably a first-year fledgling.
must read analysis from cinnamonape in the comments of previous thread.
Good Morning everyone!
What a cutie! Too bad no one delivers breakfast. You have pizza, hoagies, chineese, sushi but no pancakes brought to your door. It’s tragic I say.

Japan may cut support of Afghan mission
Since 2001, Japan’s navy has been providing fuel for coalition warships under an anti-terrorism law that has been extended three times. Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda has strongly pushed for another extension to the mission, which expires on Nov. 1.

From a NYT article on the doubts of the religious right regarding 2008. No bias in this article:
“Now they fear they may have lapsed unwittingly into the same role that African-Americans play in the Democratic Party: a dependable minority constituency that is courted by candidates but never really gets to call the shots.”

Pelosi on Fox News. A match made in heaven.
Everyone touted Pelosi being the first women Speaker of the House as being momemtous. What was momentous on her swearing in has turned to disastrous from her leadership. She needs to be replaced.

Oh that bird is cute. My girl Kat has eyes like that, pupils that take over the whole.
I missed the adored pets comment section in real time the other day so I just want to add my two kitties: 13 year old Katerina and 4 year old Samson (the former runt, now only 1 oz. smaller than the old gal). They keep me sane even as they drive me nuts!
Way, way, way WAY Off Topic:
What does George Bush pray for?
He claims to be a religious man, so in the privacy of his prayers–where guile, dissembling and spin are no use–what does he communicate to the Almighty?
Does he ask for the death of his enemies?
Does he pray for lower taxes?
Does he pray for the success of torture, suspension of habeas corpus, and unequal justice?
Does he pray for forgiveness?
Just wondering what folks think….
“Taps” be a good theme song for Larry Craig, honoring the end of another of Bush’s fallen political rubber stamper’s.

C’mon albert, he doesn’t really pray. That religious stuff is just a front. He’s just like Ralph Reed, it’s just a political game.

Republicans rule radio but Democrats fight back
“We (conservatives) have continued to rely on talk radio for information while liberals have gone out and developed these great blogs like Daily Kos and Huffington Post which is kind of like their talk radio,” said Robert Bluey, director of the center for media and public policy at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think-tank.
Democrats are targeting both Limbaugh and O’Reilly, charging the right-leaning radio hosts have crossed the line with recent comments about anti-war soldiers and blacks…

I like this quote from that article, Hope!
cheney house on CBS now
I think that maybe the leaders in the dem party have some palpable fears that if they make waves they will seriously suffer… maybe even physically, if not be the subject of enormous media put downs and embarrassments.
I wonder if Paul Wellstone’s death was just an accident. And even if it WAS, suppose someone hinted that it may not have been. That would scare the pants off anyone who if thought there was a 1 in a thousand chance there was hanky panky. Or that the real truth behind JFK or 9.11 cannot be revealed. Wouldn’t that change people’s behavior?
Look at the taser incident, the women in Pheonix airport who died… the repression at the RNC… I sense that people are scared and even pols may be and afraid to admit it for fear of being ridiculed and paranoid.

Mine as well. But I truly think he isn’t going to run. He has better things to do with his considerable talents. I am looking at Edwards, too…but I suspect HRC will head the ticket.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 54
I’m supporting Edwards.
Freakin Tim Russert! He finally has Edwards on his show but after his interview with him, when they have their usual roundtable discussion, Russert NEVER talks about Edwards. You guessed it, Russert focused totally on Hiliary, even though David Broder (of all people) and Ted Koppel both said that the poll numbers mean nothing and that Dems haven’t really decided yet on a candidate. I really loathe Tim Russert’s brand of “journalism”.
Russert grilled Edwards on campaign donations, talking about how Hiliary & Obama raised more than Edwards, yada, yada, yada. You know, the usual beltway topic. Edwards said something to the effect…This is an election not an auction. LOL I laughed my head off on that one. I’m going to have to look at the transcript but I thought it was a great line.
I’m glad that Edwards has been appearing more on national TV lately. I think it will do him a world of good to be seen and heard nationally.
One thing learned today at Pumkin’ Head’s knee.
“David Broder hearts Huckabee!”
ot – but not really……
Does anyone think that President Short Attention Span will either pardon or commute the sentence of Marion Jones for “lying to Federal Agents?”

Have you seen the Tim Russert interview yet. Watch. I think Edwards side-steps Mary Matalin’s hazing pretty well.

Does anyone know, is Patti Solis Doyle related to Hilda Solis? If so, Hillary has a damn fine campaign manager. Solis’ win here was not considered a done deal by any means. She ran a fine campaign.
theExile @ 61
Memo to David Broder:
Huckabee has as much chance of being nominated (much less elected)
as you have of mating with Ani DiFranco.
Never mind, I answered my own question, she is not related to Hilda Solis.
Huckabee said the senate had better things to do than condemn a talk show host
But the senate did not have better things to do than condemn a newspaper ad
“If you can’t get your lips off the backside of George Soros long enough to use those lips to say it’s wrong to declare a sitting general … guilty of treason, how would you ever expect to have the support of the very military you might have to send into deadly battle?” Huckabee told the Times
and they say Huckabee is the rightwinger who is not angry
Pelosi Says She Was Never Briefed ‘About The Secret Memos’ Authorizing CIA Torture
On MSNBC this morning, they’re talking about Obama not wearing a flag pin. The reich winger of course is saying that by not wearing a flag pin or flying the flag that means you are not patriotic.
Can we have a national day of flag burning in this country someday soon to prove to the wingers that burning the flag will not tear our nation down? To them, the flag is living and breathing. They’re sick. Burning the flag would be no different than smashing the “E” sign out in front of Enron. You got your message across and Enron still goes on! Jees.
mui @ 62
We don’t usually look at the Sunday morning babbling brain shows, but upon this recommendation we will. Begins in 12 minutes here. ;0)
An article on Torture and War Crimes.
Pelosi said she doesn’t think there should be primary challenges against her and her fellow DINOs.
She said the Dems don’t have the votes to overcome the procedural hurdles (she didn’t mention the terms “veto” or “filibuster”).
She said the new people wouldn’t vote any differently than the DINOs currently in office.
Every time I see Sensenbrenner I immediately think of my younger brother’s 2nd grade teacher…a woman. The physical & personality resemblence is striking, heh. She was mean as hell too.
Who could forget the nasty old fart cutting off mics & walking off gleefully with the gavel when he headed a hearing the dems wanted. Outrageous performance. Typical republican behavior.
I gotta love it. None in the leadership, and rank and file of my party (Dem Reps. and Senators) was ever briefed about anything over the last seven years.
the reason i asked about the senate being in recess next week, is that i can only find field hearings for the senate committees next week (i’m putting together the list for next week). for example, is lieberman going to be visiting ET?
Thursday, 9 am – Senate Homeland Security
Field hearing: The State and Federal Response to Storm Damage and Erosion in Alaska’s Coastal Villages (Anchorage, Alaska).
Oklahoma kiddo @ 76
And yet most voted to support it all.
Riesz Fischer @ 74
don’t suppose she said anything about the possibility that new people might not play procedural games to get bushco’s fisa bill passed instead of the negotiated dem version?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 72
I subject myself to Timmy every Sunday. It’s sorta like a mental athletic test of rigour. How much sh*t can the brain stand.
But I prescreened it and ok. it. with mild warning ., Maybe Timmy’s notes have Matalin’s scrawl on them.
mui @ 80
you are a stronger person than i am.
selise @ 79
No she didn’t. I would love to see some primary challenges against the DINOs. I would be glad to send donations to Cindy Sheehan, for example.
Cindy had threatened to challenge Pelosi. Has anyone heard anything about that?
I love Cindy. The way she talks and writes– she’s so forceful and direct. We need more like her.
http://www.cindyforcongress.org/
She declared awhile back
Tweety now playing a clip of Ghouliani talking about why we should vote for him. It’s so simple, he’s “been studying this problem for (aeons) and they hate you.” It’s that simple “they hate you.”
Rudy Ghoul is kindof the juniorhigh version of international relations, n’est ce pas?
Millineryman @ 78
Precisely.
Hi All.
Just arrived, sorry if already mentioned, but isn’t that a Bank Swallow? Cute little guy. Nice pic PPP!
We’ve been painting, furniture (big bookcases, u name it…) all over the middle of a big room, next thing will be computerdesk wall & I don’t know if our plug will reach. Ack!?! Incentive to work quickly. I need my daily FDL fix, & falling far short lately.
Guess I’ll catch up whenever I can. Luvs u guys! ;->
katherine Graham Cracker @ 83
Thanks, katherine. You have to print a form and send a check to donate to her.
She’s running unaffiliated, and it looks a little quixotic, but maybe she’ll be able to pay for some good TV ads and get the message out to people what a disappointment Nancy is. People who don’t read the blogs are largely unaware of it.
mui @ 84
Oui.
I wonder if he at least knows that Africa is not a country.
selise @ 81
Oh selise! You’re way stronger than I am. The best I can manage is to take a nap and dream that I saw him, speechless, face melting…
actually quite refreshing, and highly recommended. ;->
It was somewhat appalling to hear that Lynne Cheney was the Chair/Prez of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
This is the woman married to the man with perhaps the least humanity of any purported human on earth AND the least respect or empathy for any humanitarian values.
Looks like a Bank Swallow. There is a view of a juvenile here and an adult here. There are August sightings at Cape May SP reported here.
So, David Broder on MTP this morning that Jimmy Carter ran for governor of Georgia as a segregationist! That struck me as sorta weird, so I googled it.
It took me all of three seconds to confirm that Mr. Broder is a lying sack of SH*T.
Just sayin’…
:-)
RandyBastard @ 92
Same here! What a claim, what a liar!
I thought that was a weird statement too (Carter the Bigot).
Maybe Broder was lyin’ when he said he hearted Huckabee as well, and really only wants to top-tap with him!
newtonusr @ 93
but jimmy carter proved beyond a doubt his clear segregationist tendencies by working closely with the noted white supremacist Andrew Young.

pmorlan @ 60
You can’t make a man say something he’s being paid NOT to say.
I still wonder if all those millions Hillary is getting will end up in the pockets of people like Russert. How else do you explain all those Sunday appearances and the NY Times front page and the week-long Hillary-fest?
The current poll numbers probably reflect that campaign surge more than anything substantial. After all, what has Hillary said or done that *was* substantial?
I’m glad that Edwards has been appearing more on national TV lately. I think it will do him a world of good to be seen and heard nationally.
I looked at the polling information they gave and was simply astounded to hear that anybody thought Hillary was the ‘best leader’ or ‘more electable’ than the other Dem presidential candidates.
What planet are those people coming from?
Do campaigns just out and out buy the polling companies?
Does the public not know Hillary except as first lady in pink?
Things are seriously out of whack if they truly believe those things about Hillary.
John Edwards is being described as phony for the haircut, for his ‘poverty’ policies while being rich, for working for a hedge fund and various other superficial things.
Is superficiality REALLY all the public hears about or cares about?
I find that hard to believe, so what is to be made of the constant attention the media gives HRC or the polling?
John Edwards IS the real deal, not phony. He’s worked for poor people, fighting corporations, his whole career! He made his money helping people.
All the candidates live in nice homes. Ask Hillary and Obama how much their homes cost?
I sure hope Iowans have better sense than the national polls indicate.
One other thing: Bill Richardson slammed Edwards by saying the ‘top 3′ don’t really want to leave Iraq. Fortunately, Edwards straightened that out on MtP by explaining that he would remove all combat troops from Iraq except those needed to guard the embassy.
What is the matter with Richardson? Was he misinformed? Why would he try to trash Edwards that way? I thought he was one of the good guy?
Edwards wants to leave Iraq. He made that plain; Hillary…not so much.
