Ah, modern conveniences like cell phones, computers and internet make touring much less isolating, but I still feel out of sorts. Amongst other things, we keep missing the Stewart/ Colbert hour. As some of you know, my band is out on tour with The Donnas. The shows have been fun, but the schedule is pretty grueling especially in a van (even if we do have little video screens to watch DVDs). But I have to say that satellite radio has been one of my favorite modern conveniences on the road. No more dialing in static-y Top 40 or Modern Country from city to city. We’ve been seriously digging Sirius.
The other day on a station called Sirius Disorder we heard an interview with Hilly Kristal, owner of CBGB’s from about two years ago (before his passing). It was interesting to hear his perspective on the club and the early NYC punk scene in his own voice (whilst we were driving through the middle of Minnesota). I don’t think that I’d ever heard his voice before. Then we listened to The David Johansen Mansion of Fun Show. Fantastic Mr Johansen! Thanks for the tunes on the road. You’re a gentleman and a scholar.

Hey Donita, it’s young Jess, I just wanna say thanks for such a great time on Wednesday, best day of my life! By the way, here’s the pic of me and you: http://i230.photobucket.com/al…..2_/045.jpg
zed?
well, close…
Jess @ 1
Right On, Jess! And Donita!!!
Yay Jess! You made it to the show..)
I’ve been EPU’d! :-)
Eureka Springs @ 5
Yep, Donita and The Donnas are all incredibly nice :)
Hey Jess thats so cool you got to meet Donita in Toronto! Great picture, you look like Donita’s future stand in. You ready to pick up her guitar when she’s done eating fascists with it?
I might add this as a compliment to The Ramsey Lewis Trio:

Who made the play list this week?
finifinito @ 8
Hahahaha, wow future stand in eh?
Satellite radio is a lifesaver when driving cross-country. No longer do you have to feel like you’re stuck in a wormhole to the 1970s—not the good punk kind, but the Kansas/Lynyrd Skynyrd/Bad Company kind. If you could even find music, that is.
Eureka Springs @ 10
This is a Donita original this week. She’s jammin to some tunes she heard from Sirius satellite radio this week. I gotta vouch for the Sirius radio folks, they got some talented folks programming those stations and hosting their shows.
I don’t got a Sirius, are they really that good?
puppethead @ 12
Hey you just described the over the air radio in Indianapolis! The kind of music that makes you want to put on a wife beater shirt with greasy jeans, a wallet with chain attached to a belt loop and a bottle of Pabst Blue Ribbon in your hand while you yell at the neighbor kids to “GIT OFF’N MAH DAYUM LAWN!”
How Cool Jess!
I almost got into arm reach in Portland.
Letterman brought up Bush’s low approval ratings, asking, “Does this kind of thing bother the administration, bother the president?”
“Well, he doesn’t run around doing high fives, he’s not happy about it.” said Snow. However, he noted that Congress is doing even worse, quipping that “Bin Laden is outpolling Congress.”
Letterman told Snow he keeps hearing what a warm, cordial man Bush is in private, but that “something happens when you put him in front of an audience. … He can’t get it, it’s stuck in gear. … Is that a fair assessment?”
“Yeah,” said Snow. “And there are time you want to just dash your brains out against the wall.”

Young Jess! Truly a pleasure meeting you and your saintly parents who drove you THREE AND A HALF HOURS to come and see our soundcheck. I had no idea that you lived that far from Toronto. Thanks for the Teddy scare bear. I’m so glad that you had a good time. And just think, we met here in “comments’.
Donita Sparks @ 18
I know, it’s absolutly amazing, so how’d the show go?
rwcole @ 17
I saw that interview last night. Snowjob is not looking too good despite reports of remission.
Jess @ 19
That show was a litlle like pulling teeth. It can’t be a breeze everynight. On to Buffalo!
My baby just got in from up north. And she wants to party. This is her spin tonight. She love her some Joe Turner.

It was funny when I brought my stuff to school yesterday my friends were all like “No way!” and my one friend she was speechless I’m like “Pretty cool eh?” and she’s like “OHMYGOD!!! I’M LIKE SOOOO JEALOUS!!! I WISH I COULD’VE COME WITH YOU!!!”. I’m also really enjoying the CD you gave me, since I put it on my MP3 player yesterday I’ve been listening to all the songs to death
Oklahoma kiddo @ 22

Bruno @ 30
Yep, it’s probably the coolest thing they’ve ever done for me, I’m just really happy, it was so fun, like it just seems like it happened last night!! I’m gonna remember that forever
dakine01 @ 28
Gods bless you.
Jess @ 31
Your parents must be the coolest ever! Tell your mom and dad you love ‘em everyday and MAN! do you owe them!
finifinito @ 33
Oh definatly, I gotta get some money to that first…..let’s see….I should buy them each something
I think the captain’s hat Donita is wearing in that picture is awesome. I bet if it could talk it would have some interesting stories. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum indeed!
Donita
I love this idea of Band at the Van.cool idea. have you ever given away stuff before?
finifinito @ 35
All my friends that saw the pic love her hat aswell, I love it too!
Sirius is good, I like some shows on XM too.
Donita Sparks @ 32
Donita, I have to guess you’re at least twenty years younger than my double nickel. And I won’t ask for real as my mama taught me that a gentleman never asks a lady her age. ;})
Jess @ 34
Nah, you dont even have to buy ‘em anything, I’ll tell you how you pay them back. Call up a girlfriend or two and have them come over Sunday morning and make breakfast for the family. Then have them help you clean the house from top to bottom while mom and dad do absolutely nothing. Bring them every drink they want all day long and then dissappear for 3 hours in the late afternoon, having your girlfriends’ parents do all the driving. Trust me, nature will take its course and they will be thankful.
dakine01 @ 39
Your mama was a wise woman my friend. What the heck is a ‘double nickel”?
finifinito @ 40
My parents enjoyed it just as much as I did, my mom thinks Donita is the coolest and that The Donnas were also cool and very nice too
Donita Sparks @ 41
The Speed Limit, Ma’am…!!!
Donita Sparks @ 41
Now c’mon! Think about it for a minute. Maybe as a graphical representation…

i love the new band name. the stellar moments has a classy and sophisticated ring to it. why did you change the name and did you consider any others?
i love you!
A double nickel is what Sammy Hagar can’t drive.

The Blackwater guard who drunkenly shot a bodyguard for Iraqi Vice President Adel Abdul Mehdi in December 2006 was back working for a Department of Defense contractor by February, CNN reported this morning.

The best news I’ve seen all day!!!
This is wonderful! Some leadership from the Progressive Caucus! More like this, please!
I can still find some fault with it. For example, they should have protested the lowering of the standard from “probable cause” to “reasonable belief” in the bad August bill rammed through under false pretenses.
But it looks like they may have scratched the Emanuel-Hoyer sell-out that was about to be rolled out.
Bob in HI
This is certainly a funky post season in the Bigs! Perennial losers are amongst the mix; the Phillies, Cubbies, Indians, and, newcomer Rockies…!!! *g*
rwcole @ 17
I just luvvv warm, cordial ‘fellas’ who start wars they dont need to start….
oh and that video at the top of this thread:
awesome. very very cool.
it’s a wee film ‘ain’t it?’
Larry Johnson posted this important diary on Kos awhile ago, and I saved it. I just went back over there and it seems to have disappeared. In the diary, he says he is a registered Repub…maybe that is why it isn’t there. Anyway, he describes two briefings he just gave Dems and Repubs on avoiding attacking Iran and dealing with the Iraq situation:

I just love Ramsey Lewis’s “In Crowd.”
Any word on Christy’s little “PJ”???
Jane Hamsher @ 66
A classic. I had the pleasure of seeing The Ramsey Lewis Trio last year. The old guys had the exact same sound and spirit. Which reminds me, Ramsey said he was working on a new album. (amazon, take me away)
Hello, Donita!
Sorry, I’m late… I was not at home and I’m rehearsing now with my band, I’m only commenting to say “hello” to you! Great playlist! Have a good tour with The Donnas! Rock on!!!
Mabel’s Wig Shack @ 67
Indeed. Someone sent that to me on my birthday Monday and I shared it with Donita. I love spaghetti western music and the video is very cinematic.
Happy Belated Birthday!
the in crowd: great party music.
Great playlist, have a great weekend.

Maria. Youve got to see her.
My favorite Debbie Harry song. Perez called her a hag a few days ago and I got to use all the words one doesnt use in polite conversation in my comment there.

FYI, new post upstairs
Well, I beat Jess cause I drove 4 1/2 hours to see you in Minneapolis! But, that’s nothing. I’ve driven 13 hours just to see L7 before. Well, well, WELL worth it. Donita, you never disappoint.
finifinito @ 73
Muse is one of my favorite modern bands, and the album which contains “Knights of Cydonia,” Black Holes and Revelations, has some great political undertones to it. There were a couple of songs which were so vehemently allegorically anti-Blair you could almost smell the former Prime Minister’s hair burning.
Of course, I love this lyric from “Knights”:
But how can we win
When fools can be kings?
