…than Chris Shays for his beloved Blackwater mercenary boss.
If his definition of a “perfect” job is opening fire on a crowded intersection and killing 11 Iraqis, I think Crazy Shaysie must indeed be smitten. He’s setting the bar a wee bit low.
Perhaps Jim Himes can free Shays up a bit give the two lovebirds more time to spend together.
You can help him out. Do it for love.
(video by Scarce, thanks to Randi Rhodes)
Update: Howie has more on Republicans Who Love Blackwater. Wonder if Junior will get his veto on.

you just put it so damn well!
The spinning circle of doom gave me a quest for enlightenment in a new thread.
Called both my Congresswoman’s office and the Speaker’s office asking that impeachment be put back on the table in light of the torture actively promoted by this mal-Administration…
Brisingamen @ 3
Nancy doesn’t do impeachment. It’s just rude.
Was this on Comedy Central? If not, it should have been.
Hello, Jane…
Is that the prince ….of peace he’s praising? You know perfect near perfect
EPU’d from last thread but pertinent here:
Biodun @ 73
Oh, Jane, it’s just too funny.
I had seen the hearing, was it Wednesday, and at first didn’t link on the video ’cause I thought I couldn’t stomach rewatching Chrissie-Boy. But, then I told myself, “Self, Jane wouldn’t do that to you at lunchtime. Watch it, don’t be a wussiegirl.”
I especially like the line, When you care enough to get kinda creepy.
Thanks a bunch!
Christian Science Monitor
Shays was a conscientious objector, until he wasn’t. Now that he’s too old to serve he’s pro-war. Can you say flip flopper? I can.
dude @ 5
Shoulda been. It’s pretty genius.
The audio is from the Randi Rhodes show. They do bits like this everyday. Someone recorded it and added the video. Nice job, MyLeftNutmegger.
TheOtherWA @ 10
yup, puts “conscientious objector” in a whole nother light doesn’t it.
I was waiting for Shays to ask if he could spoon with Erik for a bit.
TheOtherWA @ 10
Did Shays actually have CO status? On what grounds? It was hard for Quakers to get CO status. You had to prove you were actively a CO with a track record. You weren’t CO status if you joined Quakers shortly before getting drafted. So how did Shays ever qualify? It’s a mystery to me.
tw?k
That was creepy. I wasn’t able to watch the hearing, so I got the traditional media version and hadn’t realized how much Shays was lovin’ on this guy. Ick.
Kinda reminds me of the Godfather II, when the Nevada senator rambles on about how much Italian Americans have contributed to America because the Godfather has the goods on him. Just saying.
I was taking a shower when he said it, watching my laptop on the ironing board. I grabbed the Dr. Bonner’s again after listening to Shays’ bullshit. Needed to wash it out. How convenient. And – “No!” – I don’t normally shower while watching Republicans lie through their teeth. My skin would eventually shrivel.
Quakergirl, I don’t know how he got CO status, but he was in the Peace Corps.
LINKY.
I can’t stand Chris Shays.
PLEASE GO AWAY SHAYS.
A perfect record–that only happens to include blowing away 17 innocent civilians with the use of 4 armed cars and two helicopters–I too, am in awe. Awe at the level of moral turpitude it takes to sit there and spout such dreck. Awe at the shamelessness.
That is one great video. And a really effective post. I’m sending money right now. Thank you Jane.
Ed*ard Teller @ 16
Naomi really appreciated your library efforts, ET.
Ed*ard Teller @ 16:
Too funny…
I love me Jane in the late afternoon. That gal speaks truth to power. Right on Lady Jane and your poodles kadoodles. You are loved out here.
ok, so here is the new thing for democrats to do, go right in the face of the republican brand
straight up, say;
“so who do we beleive, this adminsitration?…or our military>”
and of course referance things like think progress has documented here;
follow those kinds of facts with things like this and PUNISH their brand;
“the administration doesn’t trust our military one bit, they hire criminals and they circumvent success”
TheOtherWA @ 15

I think Shays and Issa must have stumbled over each other to get in the hearing room. If nothing else it just shows how in bed they are in with Blackwater.
I like the idea of seeding the world with good books.
I buy em.. read em.. give em away.
Read Hirsi Ali .. Infidel
Shays and Issa are sucking up for their next job… at Blackwater! Wanna bet?
dov12348 @ 4
I bet these people want impeachment as much as we do (think progress lead)
SanderO @ 26
You raise an interesting point: I can’t help but wonder, how many lobbyists does Blackwater have? R’s, D’s, or both?
TheOtherWA @ 17
Jeez, how many time did he say he was in the Peace Corps? Like it gave him some special insight into understanding “facts on the ground” in Iraq.
Ish @ 29
FWIW as a factoid, Chris Matthews and Kinky Friedman were both also in the Peace Corps.
And Kris Kristofferson was a West Point grad, Rhodes Scholar, helicopter pilot and janitor before he became a grammy winning singer/songwriter.
Relevance to this topic? The same relevance as Chris Shays being in the Peace Corps had to do with Blackwater, i.e., none whatsoever.
The irony here is that Shays sat out his military obligation as a concientuos objector.
This guy is nothing but a pig.
Jane Hamsher @ 20
Wow! It amazes me how cool that is, Jane. Maybe as part of Book Salon, we can find ways to assure that public and school – including university – libraries get these important books. We’re going through some tight times right now at home, and libraries have gone from a backup system for getting books to first string for me. I’ve noticed the trend toward books supporting rightwing narratives, so I’ve been talking to librarians about how and why that happens. Our side appears to be losing the war of providing inexpensive books to libraries. Also, more librarians seem to be conservative these days. Maybe that’s just local.
Ish @ 29
Many “world-weary” internationalist wannabes who have been in the Peace Corps love to make ad nauseum references to their Peace Corps credentials. Tweety is another one who has been doing this lately.
SanderO @ 26
“Your either for Blackwater or you’re against Blackwater.” – Erik Prince
Biodun @ 33
I’m not denigrating the Peace Corps, of course. But Shays’ attempt to bootstrap that into giving him speacial qualification to weigh in on military matters is ridiculous.
flatford39 @ 31
Did he go to the desert and have a conversion which allows him to be a war monger. I’d like to hear the explanation of that trip.
katherine Graham Cracker @ 36
If by “desert” you mean “lobbyist money trough” then yes.
Ish @ 35
It was the reverse. He used it say something like; Wow, I have no idea what kind of brutality it takes to do a “perfect job.”

Not always the most trustworthy site.

DEBKAfile reports: Russians employed at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear reactor suddenly depart in a body, according to local Arab sources
JPL @ 42
Thanks, I hadn’t seen them before.
Biodun @ 41
And Richardson will not. Not sure if I’d rather have him running for that Senate seat or running for Secretary of State.
perris @ 27
Can we have an understanding, between real conservatives and progressives, that we won’t stand idly by when clowns like these try to mislead the public by calling themselves “conservative?” Can we agree to call them what they are, “the Radical Right?”
Pretty please?
Ish @ 35
Representative Shays, how exactly is it that a Peace Corps Volunteer would have special knowledge about a war zone?
burnspbesq @ 46
radical right wing and fascists…fascists are what they really are
OT, but related to ongoing comments about attacking Iran:
I had a glimpse of a V-22 Osprey the other day — call me paranoid, but I am not going to say precisely where and when — streaking over the treetops. Speed is the dominant impression; that and extreme vulnerability, with those great windmills looking fragile and unprotected. Well that’s odd, I thought.
So, here’s a site that pretty much makes the case that the last place you want to use the V-22 is in the desert: http://www.g2mil.com/V-22safety.htm
and here’s a quote that suggests that for some people, speed trumps safety: “The V-22 gives us the speed and range we need to conduct our missions in a single period of darkness, where it’s safest for us and most dangerous for our enemies.”
Gen. Doug Brown
U.S. Special Operations Command, Mar. 2006 — that from http://www.navair.navy.mil/v22/.
Now, the V-22 is in the hands of the Marines.
Where, you might ask, would the Marines want to go these days (or nights) where they wanted speed and range at the expense of safety (having no memory, apparently, of the desert catastrophe at the end of Carter’s time in office, when we littered the Iranian desert with helicopters)? Well, there doesn’t seem to much of a need for nighttime range and speed in Iraq these days; also, all the peculiar weaknesses of the V-22 show up worst in a sandy place, meaning wear, tear, injury, expense, even deaths and loss of craft.
But Iran. Now there’s a situation where you might be willing to lay everything on the line and risk a new, vulnerable, expensive troop deliverer just so that you could get in and out of somewhere during darkness.
Small, specialized troop actions across the Iranian border probably underway now? Also as part of a grander attack?
perris @ 48
That works. The Republican Party is a rag-tag trash-bag full of fascists, statists, theocrats, crony capitalists, crooks, liars, racists, sexists, ageists, I-got-mine-so-pull-up-the-ladderists, gay-bashing closeted gay men … remember the line from “Blazing Saddles” where Harvey Korman is describing the sorts of people he wants Slim Pickens to hire to go after Rock Ridge? All of them, too.
Short version: scum. Can I have a big bottle of Tilex, please?
burnspbesq @ 50
Harvey Korman – you mean Hedy Lamarr??
Ish @ 51
“That’s ‘Hedley.’”
Ish @ 51
That’s Hedley!
dakine01 @ 53

Anybody have a good link to a site with info on the possibilities of Blackwater being used here in the US? I think Naomi Wolf has mentioned that, and IIRC they played some role after Katrina. Thanx!
PeterK @ 55
weren’t they already used for katrina?
Awesome News…!!! FISA is Postponed…!!!
“Amid signs that progressives in the House are worried about the direction being taken by the House Dem leadership on controversial new FISA legislation, Dems have postponed the release of the bill out of committee until next week.”
I’ve not had time today to read all the previous threads, so if this was already talked about, jest ignore me. *g*
OT, but some good news by the Progressive Caucus (Real Democrats All The Time!):
Thank doG for Progressives!
MILAN, Mich. — John D.R. Atchison, the federal prosecutor who was arrested in an Internet sex sting after he allegedly traveled to Michigan from Florida to have sex with a 5-year-old girl, hung himself in a Michigan federal prison Friday morning.
Atchison, 53, of Pensacola, Fla., was put on suicide watch after he used a bed sheet in an attempted suicide in September.
Detroit police confirmed Atchison’s suicide death at 10:14 a.m. Friday. They have not released any details.
New Thread…!!!

From the bottom of this Democrat’s heart. Thankyou Larry Craig for choosing not to resign.
“His decision was a major disappointment to Republican leaders, who had hoped Mr. Craig would make good on his pledge and spare them from the potential political liability of having a senior lawmaker who has become a national punch line.”
“Republicans are unlikely to lose Idaho’s Senate seat but are worried Mr. Craig could tarnish the party’s overall reputation.”
Reputation? What a riot!
CTuttle @ 57
woo hoo! I do so hope my Congresscritter Sam Farr is among those worried progressives.
Jane you are a national TREASURE!
Edwards assails Clinton’s Rove:
sure is a small world when the least worst is so close to the worst.
oldtree @ 1
Sure would be nice to; have someone run against Shays that we have heard of, for instance Mayor Dan Malloy of Stamford.
so — chairman waxman has called condi
on all of this — time to account:
despite supposedly installing
a “firewall” to prevent the re-hire of con-
tractors fired for misconduct — perhaps one of
the most egregiously “rogue” blackwater
contractors was rehired, by another security firm,
only two months after he allegedly murdered a
guard for the iraqi vice president, on christmas
eve 2006. clearly, erik prince was either lying
on tuesday, or woefully unprepared for his testimony.
and condoleezza rice, herself, as secretary of
state, should answer for this level of bureaucratic
incompetence — lethal incompetence, in fact. rep.
waxman is precisely correct to hold her accountable. . .

See this awesome article about Blackwater, Hillary’s pollster, and John Edwards:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/10/5/155841/062
It links to lots of great sites; it’s titled “Edwards is on the Hunt…Bites Mark Penn,” by Cosbo.
Wow!! thank you fdoglake, my favorite blog of them all.
Blackwater is merely the military arm of the Republican Party. The enforcers. The CEO is a right wing ideologue whose family has contributed significantly to the Party. They merely wait for their marching orders once the details of the contract have been worked out. Being good Republicans never forget the power of the profit motive. Blackwater is to the Republican Party what Ernst Rohm’s Brown Shirts where to the Nazi Party. To think otherwise is naive. Hitler eliminated the Brown Shirts on the “Night of the Long Knives” only after they had insured his eventual consolidation of state power and they were no longer needed. The threat of Nazism was only eliminated after the total defeat of Germany and the subsequent verdicts at Nuremburg that had party officials swinging at the end of a rope. What will end the threat of America’s slow slide to fascism?
This would be the same “conscientious objector” from Vietnam. In other words, another chickenhawk.
Jane, I just saw the video — LOL!
“…she got a restraining order.” Heh.
who are these guys, I feel like Rip Van Winkle, I woke up and everything was backwards, maybe we ought to walk backwards so they can get a better bead on the asses they so want to serve us on a paper plate.
Nothing intelligent came to mind, if there ever was any.
And He had me sick at “I am in awe..” couldn’t go any further. What an oleaginuos mess all wrapped up in a suit.
It’s gonna be his last term, let him have a little fun before he gets smoked in 08

We know there’s some spending bills to prepare and some senate work of various kinds, but sometime soon there has to be some thought given to rescuing the boat which is sinking all around us.
