An illuminating blast from the past:
...And he really did listen, more than Presidents often do. He also asked questions. One sounded lofty, yet it resonated with those of us seated around the room: "How do I speak to the soul of America?" My answer to that was simple: Focus on the children. Their plight is our shame, I told him, and their promise is our future. Reach them and you reach our soul. Bush nodded in agreement. The conversation was rich and deep for more than an hour and a half.
When the discussion officially ended, Bush moved around the room, talking with us individually or in small groups for another hour. I could see that his staff was anxious to whisk him away (Cabinet appointments were being made that week and there were key departments yet to fill). Yet he lingered and continued to ask questions. At one point, he turned to me and said, with what I could only read as complete sincerity, "Jim, I don't understand poor people. I've never lived with poor people or been around poor people much. I don't understand what they think and feel about a lot of things. I'm just a white Republican guy who doesn't get it. How do I get it?"
I still recall the intense and earnest look on his face as he stared right into my eyes and asked his question. It was a moment of humility and candor that, frankly, we don't often see with Presidents....
News flash, Pastor Wallis. President Short Attention Span needs constant ego-feeding in order to maintain interest in your cause and, clearly, any lack of attention to the issues of the poor is because you didn't stroke his ego frequently enough. Here's the thing: he's a politician, not a saint, and one who isn't exactly Mr. Attention To Detail And Honesty at that. Case in point (via Froomkin):
...Bush first tried a lighthearted approach to disarm Woodings. But when she continued to press, he confessed ignorance: "[L]ook, I don't know the program. Maybe I shouldn't make this admission, maybe I should try to bull my way through. I don't know the program; I'm sorry. I'll be glad to look into it. But just from a philosophical perspective, one of the wonderful things about the country is when there's a need, the average citizen steps up and helps fill the need through private charity."
I spoke to Woodings this morning, who told me: "I was surprised that he didn't know of the program, considering he's been attempting to eliminate it."...
When it comes to helping others out of the goodness of his heart, including poor children who can't help themselves otherwise? He's just not that into you.
Make your calls on SCHIP. Please. Especially to these folks. Because this President needs to learn the meaning of the word "repudiation." And the at risk kids deserve some real compassion for a change instead of the phony public show with backstage veto hustle they just got.
Get on the phone to your member in the House — and to your Senators. And do remember to call local offices, they are often much more receptive than the beltway crowd. Tell them to choose their constituents and the needs of children over George Bush’s “emergency room health care” plan. Shameful doesn’t begin to describe this.

Christy!
I’ll never forget that look in his eyes…..
And then he farted.
Gimme a break.
Ugh. Baron Hill’s on that list. I don’t live in his district (any more) but I still get a ton of fundraising e-mails from him.
It’s time I contact him back.

This video shows Bush’s speaking pattern differences over the past 10 years, however, what is interesting to note, is “what” he is saying. In this video, he advocates prosecuting children aged 14 as adults, along with detention centers, reform schools…the writing was on the wall back then. It is a short and interesting video:

Hi Christy:
That link goes to the same list of people you have above. Did you mean to link to another list?
ugh, isn’t it pathetic how these supposed hardcore political operatives were utterly bamboozled by this scumbag. i’d suggest it’s not only monkeyboy’s ego that was on the line — these clowns have their own ego-stroking needs to be filled.

If Congress and the President were obligated to have the same healthcare as ordinary Americans, this country would move to “socialized” medicine at light speed.
Hugh @ 12
you know, that would be a great theme for a campaign run;
“any health benefit given a politician becasue of their office should be law”
man oh man oh man, that would play everywhere
Biodun at 9 — Nope, same list. I put in a link and put the info in this post because, frankly, some people don’t bother to click the links and I wanted the information front and center. But I wanted the background information available for people who appreciate understanding all the nuances.
I don’t have the link but weren’t reagans parents recipients of welfare?
that needs to be trotted out every single time a democrat gets the chance
All I know is, there are quite a few folks around here who smelled this rat from the start. Isn’t it a pity we can’t expect the same from our fellow Americans?
BobbyG @ 4
Bush simply feels that the poor should have put as much effort as he did making sure that he was born into a wealthy family.
Will hit the dems you listed, Christy. Often I call both D.C. and local. WJ addressed SCHIP a couple of mornings ago and I was surprised at the number of calls supporting Bush’s veto. Their major gripe was wage earners making 80K getting free health coverage for adults. These are the coolade drinkers who keep rising from the dead. Inever underestimate them.
I’m calling folks, including my senators, who’ve already voted for SCHIP and who, ASAIK, will vote to override the veto, and my critter who also ditto…
FYI:
Senate already has the votes to overide the veto, but not the House.
Democratic Party candidate for US Congress Diane Benson has offered, it elected to the House, to forego her Congressional healthcare package until every American has decent health care coverage.
Is the vote on a veto override scheduled yet? Is it even “on the table” yet?
LS @ 8
I saw this video about two years ago when I was a student in a psych program. I showed it to all my professors and every one of them agreed that there is something seriously wrong with Bush. Since that time I have listened very carefully to him with this in mind. He is not always as bad as he was in the recent clips in this video, but never as good as he was when running for Governor. I spoke to the guy who made the video, and he said that he had made big efforts to give the issue some life, but nobody was interested.
Just watch out when the deciderer starts rubbing it in your face that he, the c (minus) student is the big ol preznit of the united states and you, phd type are his lowly and inferior advisor…..got it?! Little people……
Ed*ard Teller @ 21
I believe I read the House override vote is 10/18
ET at 21 — It’s been held until after the Columbus Day recess, is my understandning — so if your member of Congress is doing public events at home (and yes, I do say that advisedly considering your elected folks, ET *g*), talking to them in person and pushing SCHIP is a VERY good idea. More “You Work For Us” reminders on this, the better, I say.
BobbyG @ 4
Yep! He’s talking like a cutout doll. A one dimensional character in a 3D world!
The boy king has trouble with this one. Not only do a bunch of Repukes not see his way, eight states are suing the Federal government over it.
Some Repukes smell a dead albatross.

I call “Bullshit!”
To much intro-spection for this monomaniacal sociopath. Not buying it.
I don’t know about everyone else, but I have a J.D., not a Ph.D. And considering Preznit Short Attention Span has an MBA from Harvard, and an undergrad from Yale, he can drop the phony baloney Texas good ole boy accent any time.

Slightly OT:
E-mailed DiFi the other day over her denial that constituents had written her about Southwick. This is part of the canned response I got:
From this, I can tell that (a) they have a number of canned responses and (b) they grab the one that seems to fit the canned subject line. “Reading you letter” and valuing my opinion … not so much.
Christy,
Thanks for the reminder about calling. Called local offices of Etheridge and McIntyre.
Evidently, they’re hearing from a lot of folks.Am afraid it’s the “tobacco interests” they’re caving to — as both of them know better in terms of the wisdom of this bill.
Your comment about local action is spot on. Talked to my aunt in Wilmington who says that M.’s local office has demonstrators today — at the beach and on a holiday Friday!
Hooray!
PJ at 33 — priceless. Infuriating…but priceless, nonetheless.

Query:
Re: Mechanics of Contacting These People
I know calls are better, but can I e-mail these people who are out of my district?
I did one of them and after I sent it I got a message telling me - can’t remember the exact words - You’re not in my district so I won’t be responding.” Does this mean he didn’t get it/ won’t see it? I don’t really care if I get a response as long as they hear from me. If they aren’t, guess I have to call everyone.
We really need to know some stuff about this because the other side continues to put out
bullshit about how upper middle class adults will move into SCHIP and how it cuts medicare andf it goes on and on. I have never recommeded this and probably never will but check out Chuck Grassley’s website and also
http://www.kff.org/medicaid/schipresources.cfm
and
http://www.kff.org/medicaid/upload/7675.pdf
These reps have to know that the compromise that came out of the Senate and was supported by the likes of Grassley, Stevens, Hatch, Alexander & Bailey Hutchinson is a different bill than the one they voted on in the House and should meet the objections they might have had. As far as compromising AFTER a veto,
bullshit. The bill he vetoed WAS a bipartisan compromise. I hope i worked those link things Ok, ’cause I’m not good at that. But this is sooooo important. On its own merits. And it could give us a much needed shot in the arm to finally beat the obstructionist Republicans.
P J Evans @ 32
I got the exact same letter. It might have been over Olsen or over Southwick; I’ve written her so many emails I can’t tell. Not like my original message was enclosed (would make it too obvious she wasn’t addressing my points, I suppose).
Biodun @ 36
I’ve noticed if you hit “quote this comment” when you already have stuff in the comment box, it will append. So perhaps you didn’t actually send the first comment but thought you had, quoted & answered another comment and then did post.
It’s funky, sometimes ;-)
Christy Hardin Smith @ 25
Stevens, Murkowski and Young all voted for SCHIP. They take my calls and sometimes listen to me at the senators’ offices. But, being as the last time I encountered Don Young, I left a big sign on his windshield that said “Jack’s keeping a bunk real warm for ya, Don…” he gets testy when he hears my name.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 27

peanutbutter at 36 — The thing is, there is a lot to the theory that personal responsibility and hard work have quite an effect on how far you can go in life…if you are lucky enough to hit the right notes at the right time with the right amount of effort. But that has nothing whatsoever to do with what the children — who have no control over any of that for their parents — have to deal with in the meantime.
Honestly, people who gripe about this sort of thing just come off sounding like Ebenezer Scrooge to me, and it is impossible to take them seriously. I’ve spent time with children who were, quite literally, starving from lack of food in their homes during the summer when they couldn’t get a free meal at school. Do these people want to stand there and tell these kids — 5, 6 and 7 years old sometimes — that they just have to suck it up and starve? Or that they can just get measles and be done with it because they aren’t going to help pay for a vaccine that would save far more money in the long run that we will pay if a heart murmer turns up? Jeebus…the stupidity just burns sometimes. Let alone the selfish, shortsighted asshole qualities involved.
let them eat quail wings, eh?
Fuckers don’t know what hunger is and thats too bad, it might open their scaled eyes.
Demi at 42 — Yes, and when you add in the fact that he’s still peddling that lie after Sen. Grassley (R-IA) corrected him on it repeatedly and publicly — the whole farce just sort of crumbles into an “I’m a big, lying jackass” heap.
The thing that struck me about that comment, was when Bush said he didn’t know poor people, that he was just “a white Republican.” He clearly connects the idea “poor” with the idea “black and/or brown.” He clearly sees both “the poor” and “the black” and “the brown” as “THE OTHER.”
I really wished the other man had responded by telling Bush, “You can start relating to poor people by coming to grips that most of them look just like you, George. In fact, most poor people are EXACTLY like you. They just didn’t have the great good luck to have your father for a dad.”
Saw Grassley on c-span the day of the veto. he seemed frustrated or perturbed. Said Bush “doesn’t understand.”
Yes, and not just Grassley, but Oren Hatch also, a most unlikely opposer, spelling out how the bill Would Work…It’s just embarrasing.
(Is it just me or does Grassley remind anyone else of a stock character off of Pettycoat Junction?)
beerfart liberal @ 47
Doesn’t care, either. That’s why an override is absolutely mandatory.
BigMitch @ 22

LS @ 33
Here’s hoping but why is it that their first inclination is to sell out?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 47
Well, that’s just another in a long line of lies he has continued to repeat even after being corrected repeatedly and publicly.
Being a big lying jack-ass just seems to be his natural way of living
Demi @ 48
Grassley pays good money to come off that way. He likes to do campaign ads on the back of his riding mower, as if he’s ever home to mow his own lawn.
If he’s on board with this override, good for him…but he’s enabled a lot of Bush’s crap, and he’ll get no forgiveness from me.
OMFG (from AP wires, on the NY Times article on torture authorizations):
“Another White House spokesman, meanwhile, criticized the leak of such information to the news media and questioned the motivations of those who do so.
“It’s troubling,” Tony Fratto said Friday. “I’ve had the awful responsibility to have to work with The New York Times and other news organizations on stories that involve the release of classified information. And I can tell you that every time I’ve dealt with any of these stories, I have felt that we have chipped away at the safety and security of America with the publication of this kind of information.”
—-
They’re trying to lay the groundwork for direct press censorship aren’t they?
Demi @ 51.
No it’s not you. I expect to see him at Sam Drucker’s general store.
But being on the same side as Grassley and Orrin Hatch?? Whoda thunk it?
“When I asked Hersh who wants to bomb Iran, he said, “Ironically there is a lot of pressure coming from Democrats. Hillary Clinton, Obama, and Edwards have all said we cannot have a nuclear-armed Iran. Clearly the pressure from Democrats is a reflection of - we might as well say it - Israeli and Jewish input.” He added the obvious: “a lot of money comes to the Democratic campaigns” from Jewish contributors.”

Blub @ 56
Fratto is the most robotic of the White House press propagandists. This Administration loves torture but hates to do so in public.
What was the comment about his father? Something like, “Born on third base and thought he had hit a triple.” This fellow was born sliding into home and still thinks that he has accomplished all of his great deeds by himself. He kept missing the bag in his slide, and his protectors kept putting new bags in his way: oil company, ball team, political office — c’mon, Georgie, just pick one you like and tag it; you know we’ll let you keep it, no matter how badly you mess it up.
CBiodun @ 63
Everybody in MSM seems to be forgetting that shrub was attempting to undercut the original SCHIP program by manipulating the admin procedure rules, preventing states form using it (why states were suing the feds). This isn’t about his concern that the program is being expanded beyond its original scope and income threshholds, it’s about his disdain for the very concept of helping children in low and moderate income families.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 48
Christy - if it is now considered OK for politicians to tell lies about each other when campaigning, is it also OK for the victim of this lie to publicly call the liar, a liar (take out an ad or something). Or is the word liar off limits? Also, can this be extended post campaigning?
Hugh @ 65
actually, we don’t torture. since we’ve redefined torture as mutilation and outright murder of prisoners in custody under very specific circumstances. If we need ‘em killed or mutilated, we just render ‘em. Otherwise, it’s absolutely not torture if we suspend somebody by their wrists and subject ‘em to an electric inquisition. No death or mutiliation at our hands, no torture.

It’s window dressing.
I just called Rep. Baron Hill’s office. What a depressing experience.
The 20-something on the phone had a rehearsed speech regarding the “disproportionate burden” their district would have to bear for the current SCHIP proposal, repeating “poor tax” a number of times.
She also was clearly concerned that I couldn’t possibly understand either the complex policy issues at work, or how to count votes.
When pressed for the views of his actual district, she could not say that the district was in favor of vetoing SCHIP.
I wonder - are their any firepups in Hill’s barely blue district who can make calls as well?

I called a little while ago but it may have been a different local office than the one you called. The person was polite, took my message and info and we exchanged a few pleasant words. Maybe try a different office.
I just called Grassley and commended his actions on SCHIP.
Also asked if the Senator had a few scales fall from his eyes about his association as a Rubber stamp for this criminal regime.
ET, I call Grassley at least once a week and they were “Shocked, Shocked to realize that Gambling was going on!*g*

Ah! I called the DC office. Thanks for the tip!
Why do people take this man at his word. He has lied and cheated his whole life. He cheated his way into the presidency, yet people believed what he said about being compassionate. Makes no sense. Compassionate people believe in fairness and justice. Compassionate people don’t have a value system based on “the end justifies the means” philosophy. Compassionate people don’t reduce a foreign country to rubble, and compassionate people don’t neglect their fellow countrymen.
Bah ha ha ha.
Listen to the soul. Love the children. Drink a beer with me.
Flush liberty and country down the toilet. WAKE UP - POLICY (maybe we can get it reported on if we are lucky).
What a shrivelled pit of a soul this guy must have.
I, too, called Rep. Baron Hill’s D.C. office, 5th out of the 5 listed above. After saying what had become my piece about a pediatrician friend’s interest in the treatment of asthma because he saw so much of it among his patients, and my own (covered, thank God) adventures with asthma last winter, I asked whether Cong. Hill might be persuaded to support SCHIP. Staffer said that it had been a hard decision: Indiana’s SCHIP program, she has been very well-run for the past 10 years, & recently raised its tobacco / cigarette (?) tax in order to pay for it. She said that the financing of the new bill would however make Indiana an SCHIP donor state to the tune of about $300,000,000 per year (apparently as a result of its good administration), while it would get only about $50,000,00 back. She said that people in Indiana are not doing well economically. So while the Congressman supports SCHIP, he felt that he couldn’t support this funding method. I can’t do fact checking on this. But to the extent that this is accurate, isn’t it a wakeup call to Democrats for more fairly-crafted legislation?
Why is it when conservatives are told that they can never understand the plight of a poor man or a black man, that’s a legitimate complaint…but when the President actually admits that he cannot understand the plight of the oppressed because he’s never been there where they are, you ridicule him for it? Another prime example of why liberals have no credibility (kinda like how the Dems started the carnage of Vietnam). Hypocrisy rules. And BTW, if bombastic stunt reporter Chris Matthews is your hero, more power to US!!
I have no idea who was alleging Bush had this meeting, but I guran-effing-tee Bush never said “How do I speak to the soul of America?” And how about “The conversation was rich and deep for more than an hour and a half.” What a load of crap. How dumb do these guys think we are? Dumb enough to have elected a low grade moron in the first place I guess…
Only slightly off-topic: can anyone direct me to possible sources to help my best friend pay for her chemotherapy?
She’s over 4 years into ovarian cancer, the last chemo hasn’t been working, and they want to switch her to one that might work but she can’t afford–over $800 per month (or maybe even per dose, she was so overcome I could not understand her).
They have been wiped out financially over this all ready in the first year of treatment, her HMO is hounding them (they’ve found some devilish ways to overcharge her) and sending her account to collections. She’s in Washington state, and I don’t know what resources there might be, googling didn’t really net me anything except to send her to social services at the hospital. Duh.
She can’t work (hasn’t the stamina, can’t stand that long, the chemo sucked the calcium out of her back and she’s still recovering from back surgery) and her husband is working but all their money is going to their mortgage and her health care.
I’ve asked her to send me the name of the medicine and the manufacturer, thinking maybe they have a program to assist patients–is this a possibility, or am I dreaming?–
It drives me crazy to think that there might be something that could save her but she’s too poor to afford it. What a cruel country this has turned out to be.
