When I first started reading blogs I was on some conservative site as “Mark”. Later I went to Calpundit and they already had a “Mark”, so I just added an initial and made it “MarkH”. Not very exciting, but my first name is in it.

Tomorrow evening begins another Jewish holiday. It is called Simchat Torah, literally Rejoicing in the Torah (law, or teaching).

In the synagogue each week we read a portion of the five books of Moses, starting with “In the beginning…” and finishing a year later with the last verse of Deuteronomy. Then the scrolls are re-wound back to the beginning, and we start again. That’s what happens this Thursday night. It is celebrated by dancing around with the scrolls, and drinking, and of course, a sermon on Genesis (my favorite book.)

In lands where the practice of Judaism has been suppressed, e.g. Soviet Russia, this holiday assumed greater importance, in part, because it took bravery to extend the dancing and celebrating out of the synagogue, and into the streets.

Hmm . . . story telling, wine and beer and maybe whiskey tasting . . . and moments of reflection and discussion amongst a tribe.

I could do that. I’ve DONE that.

Many a fest camp night . . . it’s a good ritual.
