Yglesias is right, if McCain or Giuliani are elected we’re all doomed and the Middle East will soon be a sheet of glass, but it is equally comforting to see that being Bush’s water carrier doesn’t disqualify you from gainful employment in “everything will be better in 08″:
Michael O’Hanlon, Brookings senior fellow and former Congressional Budget Office defense and foreign policy analyst, supporter
Proving that there is nothing so stupid, offensive and offered up in sheer bad faith that it will get you kicked out the Circle of Village Elders.
Oh by the way the surge is working. Pass it on.

Is the quote part truncated?
OK. So Hanlon who supports the war but has given weasally interviews implying the opposite, now endorses HRC.
Lovely.
When the Iraq Nam supporters start givin body counts “It’s goin well cause we’re killin more of them than they are of us” you know that the fucker is long lost.
There’s still so far to go in silencing the Noize Machine, but it was quite encouraging to watch Jon Stewart dismantle Chris Mathews the other day.
That is such a clear example of the New Guard taking down the Old Media Guard. Face to face. And notice how childish and completely defenseless Matthews is when challenged. You can almost hear the synapses in his head shorting out, “BBZZZTTT! Does Not Compute!”
Think he’s smacking his lips for a job with Hillary. Reason #999,999 not to vote for her.
bonkers @ 5
We were discussing this a couple of posts ago … I thought Tweety was pretending to not understand what Jon was saying, hoping that Jon would give up … tee hee … Jon & Jane will nevvuh give up !!!

And which parallel universe is this?
Oh! Right! Brookings-Heritage-Neoconlandia. Sorry! Never mind
Looks like less sausage and more skateboards.
Brookings is a far cry from Heritage. Pass it on.
Being thatr he’s an out of the closet anti-semite McCain’s electoral prospects are nil.
As for Ghouliani he’ll lose because of 9/11.
McCain was once a sane, sort of rational actor but this presidential bug up his ass has really set him off. I knew him once upon a time in the USN, and he seemed like a pretty decent guy. Now he’ll say (or do, or say he’ll do) anything to get a vote. Whether he returns to some form of sanity in the future is possible, but doubtful… I don’t think he’d go for the “sheet of glass” solution because it would affect Israel as well, and he’s a big supporter.
Guiliani, not so much. I think one of his foreign policy advisors is like JPod or something and we all know how brilliant he is. I don’t think Guiliani has much restraint, nor does he care about Israel other than how much loot he can get from AIPAC, not that he’s anti-semitic by any means, he just doesn’t care. I suspect that not only is a “nuclear option” on the table with Giuliani if he’s trying to be Mas Macho, it’s the appetizer preceding the two course meal of Death and Destruction at that table.
It’ll take America a generation or two to begin to recover from what the 1600 Crew hath wrought. I suspect it will take the republican party even longer.
Sorry to see that Newt’s out of the gooper race for prez. That would have made the thing MUCH more entertaining. He’s a flim flam man- but with a brain…

awaiting moderation? huh?
It did work. We won the war and we can bring all the troops home now.
The surge proved that Al Qaeda is hated more than Americans, that Al Qaeda cannot take over any government because Muslims instinctively hate Al Qaeda more than Bush.
Being a fundamental mis-calculation to invade in the first place, the cost of this victory will exceed the real costs of post-WW2 re-construction.
The re-location of a million plus Iraqis to the U.S., reparations to whatever government the Iraqis finally hash out.
As mis-guided and criminally ignorant as the Iraq invasion was, it has been a military victory for the United States.
The rationale for the war — removing Saddam, eliminating WMD, and ensuring an Al Qaeda-free government in Iraq — have all been satisfied.
When the Sunnis in Anbar joined with the hated Americans to fight AQ-Iraq, the War was won. The only people hated more in the Muslim
world than Americans is Al Qaeda: No one wants to live a 7th Century lifestyle, or blow up innocent people.
Now let’s go home and after a brief celebration soberly address the issue of relocations and reparations.

Hard refresh. It’s there.
rwcole @ 12
Maybe Freddie Fizzle’s handlers can rescript him as the “New Newt”. The “New Reagan” role’s not working out so well, although that may be due to bad script writers. [insert law & order signature sound here]
The new Reagan—
Dead and stupid?
Dems should start collecting things that Thompson’s character said on Law and Order- then attribute them to Thompson. Americans can’t distinguish between the two…Make Thompson deny em!!!
bonkers @ 5
Exactly.
It shows just how much they’ve bought into their own crap. Matthews’ capacity for independent thought atrophied decades ago.
rwcole @ 13
And a hyperactive pen*s!

O’Hanlon can be the assistant manager at Triangulators*R*Us. He’s got the chops for the job.
David Ehrenstein @ 11
Speaking of Rudy, this is hilarious. It shows what a flipping delusional liar he is.
I await with baited breath Mikey’s Next Excellent Adventure into Iraq. I understand Sacha Baron Cohen is attached to play Mikey in kind of a Borat-in-reverse film about this.
Up to now, the dem race is a snore fest- the gooper race, on the other hand, has possibilities.
rwcole@19:
Hilarious. I’m repeating that one with your permission.
I ran up the flag downstairs..
Jo Fish:
McCain was always a neocon. Bill Kristol played a prominent role in his 2000 campaign. Here’s Kristol lamenting McCain’s loss in South Carolina as “the end” of the conservative movement: ‘This was the end.’ I think the Christian right, which I’ve defended, is finished because of what Ralph Reed and Pat Robertson have done in South Carolina, because of the meanness of the assault.”
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/f…..nted=print
I think Kristol stopped complaining about the Christian Right once they showed their enthusiasm for invading Iraq.
Oh, this is charming:
Issa to Waxman: Investigate Blackwater and die.
And no, I’m not kidding. (It’s not as if they haven’t done this sort of veiled threat before.)
iron- help yerself.

fucking insane.
selise
Can’t help but recall a Presidential candidate who got hisself in some deep shit with that kind of flippant statement. Love to take him up on it.
selise @31:
I don’t want any “refocusing” on Iraq by means of a tax raise; I don’t find it helps me “focus” any more than a draft would. They need to win the debate — not “refocus” it — and stop cutting checks for it.
One of the points which KO got at last night wrt Obey’s proposal is this: American taxpayers are paying for the war either way. So the question is really, do you want to pay for it, or do you want to make your kids and grandkids pay for it?
Ish @ 36
The Republics are making your kids and grandkids pay for it, but not their own.
Phoenix Woman @ 30
And I hope Henry Waxman cleans Issa’s clock..but good. What sort of garbage is that? Who the hell is Issa to say something like that?
The one to worry about is the Council on Foreign Relations.
They want to rule the world and care less about how.
Rasmussen reports that when polls screen for “likely primary voters”, Freddie leads Rudy.
Scottie says this is because “likely voters” are better informed- more likely- they all watch Law and Order.
Toby Wollin @ 38
Issa is a loyal Bushie and Republic water carrier.
Issa ain’t a water carrier- he IS the water.
rwcole @ 42
My question is: Does he show up at hearings with a baseball bat?
brendan @ 35
good point. maybe i’m expecting too little from my congress critters…
Ish @ 35
This is being cheered as a strategy? Advocating shared sacrifice (as if we haven’t sacrificed enough!) for a war no one supports?
Part of La Jolla sinking- multi million dollar homes buckling- cratering- swaying to the music..
Lucifer strikes La Jolla.
John McCain. You are a Republican boob. Thank you for reminding us about this. I had almost forgotten.
Republican White House hopeful John McCain said Wednesday that President Bush made a mistake after the Sept. 11 terror attacks by encouraging people to shop rather than urging citizens to join the military or volunteer.
“I believe that the big mistake that our leadership of our nation made after 9-11 is we told people to go shopping and we told them to take a trip,” McCain told students at a military prep school in this early voting state.
rwcole @ 42
Remember that giant pitcher that used to break down walls in TV ads for Kool-Aid in the 70s? I kinda like to picture him/her as the new mascot for the GOP.
Oh yeah.
“baseball bat”
Here’s the funny story about Issa..
His brother was a car thief. Once he stole Issa’s car, and Issa made an insurance claim..
Issa learned so much about stealin cars, that he invented “the club” which made him rich.
Education is ALWAYS worthwhile.
Ish @ 36
Actually, I want Bush pioneers, and their kids and grandkids, to pay for the war. Capital gains taxes? Dividend taxes? Where does one start?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 47
That must be why no one from the Bush family enlisted. They all think that they’re just supposed to shop and travel. Bush’s own daughters really took his orders to heart.
So here are the names on Hillary’s list of foreign policy advisers:
Madeleine K. Albright, President Clinton’s secretary of state and now chairperson of the National Democratic Institute, foreign policy adviser
Samuel “Sandy I put it in my pants” R. Berger, President Clinton’s national security adviser and now a principal at business consultancy Stonebridge, foreign policy adviser
Lt. Gen. Daniel William Christman, a former West Point superintendent and now senior vice president for international affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, foreign policy adviser
Gen. Wesley K. Clark, President Clinton’s Kosovo commander and now a Democratic fundraiser, endorsed Sen. Clinton Sept. 15
John H. Dalton, President Clinton’s Navy secretary and now president of the Financial Services Roundtable’s Housing Policy Council, veterans and military retirees for Hillary
Lee Feinstein, a deputy in President Clinton’s State Department, national security coordinator
Leslie H. Gelb; president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, a former New York Times correspondent and a former State and Defense Department official, informal adviser
Richard C. Holbrooke, President Clinton’s UN ambassador and broker of the Dayton Peace Accords (and now a Washington Post columnist), foreign policy adviser
Martin S. Indyk, President Clinton’s ambassador to Israel and now director of Brookings’s Saban Center for Middle East Policy, foreign policy adviser
Gen. John M. (”Jack”) Keane, a former Army vice chief of staff who co-crafted the Iraq “surge” and is now a military analyst (sometimes for ABC news), military issues adviser
Lt. Gen. Claudia J. Kennedy, former deputy chief of staff for intelligence, veterans and military retirees for Hillary
Lt. Gen. Donald L. Kerrick, President Clinton’s deputy national security adviser, organizes meetings of retired officers
Vali Nasr, Naval Postgraduate School professor, Middle East adviser
Michael O’Hanlon, Brookings senior fellow and former Congressional Budget Office defense and foreign policy analyst, supporter
Rep. (and retired Vice Adm.) Joseph Sestak, veterans and military retirees for Hillary
Andrew Shapiro, Sen. Clinton’s Senate foreign policy staffer
Jeffrey H. Smith, former CIA general counsel and now a partner leading the public policy and government contracts group of law firm Arnold & Porter, national security adviser
Strobe Talbott, Brookings president, informal adviser
Togo D. West, President Clinton’s secretary for veterans affairs and former secretary of the Army, veterans and military retirees for Hillary
Former Amb. Joseph C. Wilson IV, the half of the Plamegate couple who criticized the administration for using questionable evidence to promote the Iraq war, endorsed Sen. Clinton July 16
Most of the names on Hillary’s list are Clinton era members of the Washington foreign policy Establishment. Most are hawkish. There are none that represent anything new. A few like Wesley Clark and Joe Wilson are well regarded here (although both are more conservative than most here). A few are real howlers like Gen. Jack Keane who along with Fred Kagan put together the “surge” and, of course, the vacuous Michael O’Hanlon. Indyk cut his teeth at A*P*C. Not sure about some of the others and would be interested in what others have to say about them.
brendan @ 50
Raise the estate tax, that’ll hit ‘em.
Booosh insulted McCain- his wife- his family- his “black daughter”…McCain reponded by bendin over and kissin Clusterfuck’s smelly ass time an time again…
Honor
McCain or Giuliani could get elected. After all, Lieberman won re-election. And who threw Ned Lamont on the trsh heap in favor of Joe?
The slaughter continues, pass it on, and the Bush Clan sociopaths must be very fucking proud of little clusterfuck! Brown people don’t matter…to the Bush Clan White Fucks!
Do you believe in a JFK conspiracy? -
No, Sir -
What would you do if you could sit down with the President? -
I wouldn’t do anything, but, I’d tell him he’s one of the dumbest motherfuckers I’ve ever heard!
Hugh @ 52
i have respect for clark and wilson… but not for their foreign policy.
Hugh @ 52
Some surprising names, but Keane is a howling lunatic. His recent congressional testimony varies not a whit from any neo-con. Amazing.
I don’t like that list of advisers not one bit… maybe Joe Wilson… but he was a republican yanno…
I would start shooting straight shots of whiskey with beer backs and watch the bastard cry.
bonkers @ 5
Tweety honks when he laughs wtf?!? lol
He also drank the hillary kool-aid or something.
Bustednuckles @ 60
hahahahaha !!

For a full treatment of your observation find and read: America Rules, US Foreign Policy, Globalization and Corporate USA by Tom Hanahoe (ISBN 0-86322-309-5) from Brandon Books (Ireland). Amazon.co.uk would be the easiest source. It lays out the history, background, personnel, documentation, and reach of influence of the Council on Foreign Relations. A must have book for an informed opinion.
Issa is a Thug.
We know he’s a Bored millionaire.
And, when I see a Big Pitcher struggling, I can’t help but thinkin’
What’s he compensating for?
A small and insecure heart?

Only 999,999 reasons?

The problem with catholic candidates:
——————————————————————————–
ST. LOUIS — Roman Catholic Archbishop Raymond Burke, who made headlines last presidential season by saying he’d refuse Holy Communion to John Kerry, has his eye on Rudy Giuliani this year. Giuliani’s response: “Archbishops have a right to their opinion.”
Burke, the Archbishop of St. Louis, was asked by The St. Louis Post-Dispatch if he would deny Communion to Giuliani if the former New York mayor approached him for the sacrament.
“If the question is about a Catholic who is publicly espousing positions contrary to the moral law, and I know that person knows it, yes I would,” the paper quoted the archbishop as responding.
Burke has said of Giuliani: “I can’t imagine that as a Catholic he doesn’t know that his stance on the protection of human life is wrong. If someone is publicly sinning, they should not approach to receive Holy Communion.”
Among others, Obama has Zbigniew Brzezinski and Samantha Power (who IIRC wrote a well received critique of US foreign policy). He also has Richard Clarke (counterterrorism holdover best known for his 9/11 testimony). He’s way too conservative for me. And then there is Dennis Ross whom I can’t abide.
Badwater @ 41
Used to have Issa as my Rep. when I was working @ UC San Diego. If he isn’t in bed w/Blackwater in some way I’d be astonished. I remember him well for being a pain in the ass to USA Carol Lam regarding her restructuring of immigration prosecutions before she was fired. He bitched & moaned because our Darrell wanted a large quantity of revolving door prosecutions rather than Lam’s idea of quality plus more jail time.
My daughter was living w/me in Oceanside & she nicknamed him Darrell the Furious Hairball for his apoplectic pronouncements to the Union Tribune & other local media. The guy can really act & sound certifiable…
Rudy says that he can afford his own cheap wine and crackers.
BTW John Edwards is the only top tier candidate to address the “Blackwater” problem on his web site today.
http://johnedwards.com
All this talk about Issa is really on topic for the new thread.
Dianne in DC @ 71
BTW here is my newest scandals list entry on Blackwater:
They’re discussing Darrell upstairs, too.
Actually, I thought what he came up with was that annoying ’step away from the car’ alarm, not the Club.
Shorter Junya: “Sob…oh, oh the shame…sob…not one of those Repugs wanted me as their Foreign Policy Advisor…sob.”
Oklahoma kiddo @ 47
Bill “William the Bloody” Kristol is backing McCain … no wonder why he wants to bomb Iran .. Max Boot too? … the Republicans sure love to go the extremism route
Phoenix Woman @ 21
Jon’s remarks were clearly well thought out, especially so on his salvo on Matthews new book and IIRC it triggered his desperate meltdown and darting eyes and finally rendered him speechless finally. Simply delicious.
Jon and Keith are a link with sanity for this ole newsbrat. Any updates on the future of Limpballs and O’Reilly going down?
rwcole @ 67
We know the Catholic church is a one trick pony. They sold their soul to the devil over the abortion issue. Lot of good that did them. If Rudy is the Rethugs nominee, I wonder what they are gonna do. It will put them on the spot for sure.
Hugh @ 52
Quote #52
I am very happy with the foreign policy advisers that Hillary has with her. These are the very people who had us at peace and who won over in Kosovo without a shot fired during the 90’s. So I would suggest all of you who are commenting on Hillary’s advisers, take a look at who’s in there now. Half of the positions are vacant and the other half are useless.
