If Congressional Democrats are looking for guidance on what to do with a recalcitrant President and obstructionist Republicans, the American people just sent a powerful message: Stand up to Bush, withdraw the troops faster, cut the defense budget and use the money for kids’ health care. Or else.
A new Washington Post – ABC poll just handed Democrats directions in big bold numbers.
Most Americans oppose fully funding President Bush’s $190 billion request for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a sizable majority supports an expansion of a children’s health insurance bill the president has promised to veto, putting Bush and many congressional Republicans on the wrong side of public opinion on upcoming foreign and domestic policy battles. . . .
Overall, 55 percent of Americans want congressional Democrats to do more to challenge the president’s Iraq war policies, while only a third think the Democrats have already gone too far.
And WaPo’s phrasing obscures the full impact of what the poll’s numbers are saying. The only issue on which the public indicates significant support for the President is his plan to withdraw the 30,000 additional troops he committed to the surge. But even more Americans want a larger and faster withdrawal than Bush proposes. But look at how the WaPo’s John Cohen and Dan Balz spin it:
At the same time, there is no consensus about the pace of any U.S. troop withdrawals from Iraq. In July, nearly six in 10 said they wanted to decrease the number of troops there, but now a slim majority, 52 percent, thinks Bush’s plan for removing some troops by next summer is either the right pace for withdrawal (38 percent) or too hasty (12 percent would like a slower reduction and 2 percent want no force reduction); fewer, 43 percent, want a quicker exit.
Nice try, but let’s reassemble those numbers in a way that makes sense, given the misdirection Bush gave on how he would continue withdrawing troops as they “succeeded.” What Americans are more likely saying is that 38 percent want at least the 30,000 troops withdrawn on Bush’s schedule while an even greater number, 43 percent, want a larger, quicker withdrawal. That’s an overwhelming 81 percent in favor of withdrawing troops (compared to 60 percent in July), and more than half of those want the exit to be faster than Bush proposes. Americans aren’t supporting Bush; they overwhelmingly support bringing the troops home.
And America’s spending priorities are stunningly clear: Two thirds want Bush’s $190 billion request for war reduced, with “45 percent wanting it reduced sharply.” In contrast, Americans overwhelmingly want full funding for the SCHIP bill — children’s health care:
More than seven in 10 support the planned $35 billion spending increase, and only 25 percent are opposed. About half of Americans “strongly” support the increased spending; 17 percent are that firmly against the additional money. And the program expansion has majority support across party lines: Eighty-one percent of Democrats, 69 percent of independents and 61 percent of Republicans are in favor.
The public’s message to Democrats is clear and powerful: If you Democrats demand an accelerated troop withdrawal, approve substantially less funding for war and full funding for children’s care — read, progressive domestic priorities — the American people will back you up.
The nation has rejected Bush, rejected his war, rejected his priorities, rejected the Republican party; Americans want the Democrats to take charge. If they stand up to Bush, the American people will support them. But if they cave again, the’ll lose the public’s support. Any questions?

said the queen,if I had them I’d be king!
Does the Unitary Executive theory include the opinion of the people?
Good Morning Scarecrow
It’s pretty clear what we want them to do!
Can’t they hear us?
side note
The Blackwater hearing today at ten will be on CSPAN 3
And Issa’s on Washington Journal on the topic now.
“Waxman has an agenda here,” “bodies aren’t cold”
Issa bashing Waxman on CSPAN1 :/
The nation will reject Dems, too. The vote to give Bush his bucks was 92 to 3….Please tell us who voted against it and I will write them in for POTUS in 2008.
Seriously.
the democrats are pussies plain and simple
Mike Gravel last night on PBS stated that A*P*C is behind the ‘Kyl-Leiberman’ amendment and that the Democratic Party just went along with it.
Ray Suarez pressed slightly on this point. Mike Gravel said to watch and see; the facts will dribble out.
My question is this: with so many legislators in the either ‘thrall’ or ‘pay’ of a foreign power how can we ever hope to mount an effective ‘pro peace’ middle eastern policy?
This would make the advocates of the foreign power ‘quislings.’ The legislators (all top Democratic party contenders ‘quislings’) and many liberals are also ‘quislings.’
Imagine if this foreign power was Syria or Iran.
Why does Isr*el determine when and where this nation goes to war with their ‘front’ men like Kyl-Leiberman?
Elliott @ 8
Good gag! Wonder what strings Blackwater had to pull to get this POS on to extol their virtues?
Gone too far? Who are these vast hordes of yobbos? They can’t all be wanting to sign up with Blackwater.
It’s misleading to suggest this poll is about Congress. I expect the latter’s numbers are in the toilet, if anyone of those in favor of the “progressive” agenda items are paying as close attention to them as they are to the Washington junta.
Waccamaw @ 13
Issa – “…vehicles approached, presumably with bombs…” I guess Issa inspected the vehicles after the fact?
Waccamaw @ 13
PS – All bets off the table as to whether greta will ask him any decent questions (actually appears she is eating it up); should be interesting to hear caller responses.
Waccamaw @ 13
I don’t think it takes much, Issa’s always eager to do what needs to be done for that side.
“The Public’s message to Democrats is clear and powerful” The Public’s message to Republicans is clear and powerful Republicans too.
Very few are listening!
It’s like a discussion of child soldiers.
Any discussion of child soldiers needs to include the background information i.e. the American, French, whatever arms merchants selling their ‘leaders’ weaponry.
Any discussion of peace has to include all relevant background data.
the ‘will’ of the American people may be one thing but the powerful forces aligned against them are another.
And the Democratic party including ‘liberalism’ in general is also contrary to the will of peace loving peoples.
Mabel’s Wig Shack @ 12
Ray looked a little taken aback as well.
The impression I got of Mike Gravel is that he is just sickened by the state of affairs of A. the nation B. the sadness and weakness of the human condition right now i.e. the Democratic Party’s warhogs (warhogs is my word not his).
Elliott @ 17
On Washington Journal Rep Issa stated “our job is not to act as cops on the street to figure out who started the fist fight” Duh indiscriminate killing of Iraqi people is just a bit more than a fist fight.
With Rep. Issa heading the Oversight Committee one does not need to wonder why there was no serious oversight.
twȝk @ 20
Gravel stepping out to tell the truth
Mabel’s Wig Shack @ 21
I was impressed with his sincerity of wanting to empower the people.
Kathleen @ 22
Tom Davis is the ranking member, Issa’s a committee member with BIG ambitions.
twolf and Elliott -
I gotta get ready to run errands in the big town today…….would appreciate all further feedback wrt how this segment progresses. Be back late afternoon. Maybe I’ll get to hear some of the hearing on sat radio while on the road. Am still thinking prince ain’t gonna show his face.
Y’all have a good day and enjoy Mr. Henry!
Imagine being a guy who runs a land mine corporation and taking your kid out to play in the park.
an almost psychotic disconnect with reality.
I’m sure the average American person (not robo Christians brainwashed by the ReNamblacans) would be horrified to think of such things.
But of course the job of journalism is to cover Brittney Spears.
Good morning, firedogs. Special double feature coming your way later this a.m.
Potentially explosive hearing on Blackwater coming up this morning; the Republicans are in panic, so that’s why issa et al are out there bashing Waxman. They know this topic is a public relations disaster for Bush and Condi — and there’s more to come. Background here. What this story leaves out is the fact CNN reported last night, that Blackwater employee wrote the initial “spot report” on the incident that State Department issued — and put out as it’s own. So Condi now implicated in same “fox guarding henhouse” theme as the rest of this sorry Administration. “No one could have anticipated…”
Second hearing on former Dep. A.G. Goldsmith, and what happened with all the opinions that authorized illegal activities.
Marcy and Christy are hoping to cover both simultaenously; Marcy to live blog here on Blackwater; Christy to follow up with Goldsmith.
It’s going to be an interesting morning.
Waccamaw
Later!
Scarecrow @ 28
maybe the Blackwater business is the tip of the iceburg that leads to the rottenness in the heart of Denmark (or something- excuse the poor metaphor)
but drats. will have to read it tonight. thank you for the site and your themes.
Hmmm, let’s see now…is there a sale somewhere on “asbestos shorts”? I have the feeling some people out there are going to need them.
I hope it’s an earthshaking morning!
Kathleen @ 23
Yet again. We need him back in the Senate.
write that down, Issa wants the Department of the Interior investigated, wants to go after waste fraud and abuse in the Department of the Interior.
What is wrong with Dems? Even my Republican senator, Dick Lugar, has voted the right way more times recently than a lot of Dems.
OT — but only slightly — I believe today is the anniversary of Ghandi’s birthday and International Non-Violence Day. (maybe I read that here yesterday, I don’t remember where I saw it).
Greta challenged him at the beginning of the interview, but she just allowed (once again) a caller to link 9/11 to Iraq. She does this a lot.
Brian Lamb was called out on this a couple of weeks ago. He did say that the host of Washington Journal can correct out right lies, so why don’t they?
I know their jobs are not to correct each callers views based on facts, but allowing what is taking place in Iraq to be connected to 9/11 is a flat out lie and way over the top.
PS – All bets off the table as to whether greta will ask him any decent questions (actually appears she is eating it up); should be interesting to hear caller responses.
The people who pay their salary want us out of the war. The people who pay their bonuses want us in the war because of the huge profit margin. Since their bonuses are many times larger than their salaries; guess who wins.
alank @ 14
Read the full story; there are other poll numbers on Congress’ approval, split out by Dems, Independents and Repubs.
Scarecrow @ 38
On further reading only 3% want to zap all funding. 3 fuc**ng % !!!! It is no wonder this country has gone to hell in a handbasket.
Scarecrow @ 28
wonderful!
and if that’s not enough, there is also (at 9:30am) a house energy and commerce hearing on “Digital Future of the United States: Part VI: The Future of Telecommunications Competition ” with several AT&T weenies.
i’m going to try to record all three…. we’ll see how it goes, that’s more than i’ve previously attempted.
Scarecrow -
They know this topic is a public relations disaster for Bush and Condi — and there’s more to come.
Your keyboard to God’s ear!
Kathleen -
There’ve been a number of callers complaining about greta and her tendency to cut off Dems. Have set myself the multi-day task to sit down for the entire program and talley her apparent preferences for thug phoners.
Addiction, addiction……can I force myself to hit the disconnect button and get the day on the road? *g*
selise @ 40
Selise – I think the telecom competition thing is going to be a giant yawn. Telecommunications competition is like “kosher bacon” – it really does not exist. But it will be mildly interesting to see what people say.
selise @ 40
Selise — Christy is still trying to confirm that the SJC hearing will be broadcast live.
Sha @ 10
here’s the roll call vote on the defense authorization bill. feingold voted “no”.
and please not the number of fraidy cat senators who are running for president and did not vote.
I know this is OT but this Kos piece gave me some comfort this morning. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/10/1/175739/843
I really believe Al could turn the country around.
What incentive does Prince have to tell the truth this morning? The Congress has no teeth and there will be no punishment for lying.
We have witnessed what is important to a Republican controlled congress. They investigated Lies under oath about Bj and then allowed an INTELLIGENCE SNOWJOB to slip by.
Jesus Mary and Joseph we have yet to witness anyone held accountable for the creation and dessimination of WMD false intelligence. Not to mention the lack of oversight on Cheney’s energy policy, record breaking oil profits, NSA intercepts accessed by John Bolton to “allegedly” spy on Colin Powell etc etc
Holding those responsible for lying our nation into an unnecessary war is the very least that our Reps can do for those who have lost their lives, body parts, sanity (both the Iraqi people and Americans) in this war of choice based on a “pack of lies”.
Where is the complete Phase II of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Report. Why are folks like Douglas Feith, John Bolton Ari Fleisher, Cheney, still out there spreading lies?
Thanks for the scheduling info, Scarecrow.
Blackwater’s Erik Prince is a homie from Michigan; in my back yard we have been extremely worried about what Blackwater represents, not only from a military perspective or law enforcement angle, but from a political perspective as well. Prince is very tightly wound up into a family machine that has been the life blood of the current Republican Party, as well as the “vast right-wing conspiracy”. As TPM pointed out, we are talking about the largest private donors to the Republican Party when looking at Prince and his sister’s extended family.
It’s not just progressives who have issues with Blackwater. Even professionals have issues with details about their performance. There is something else going on here that simply doesn’t make sense, and I hope we make serious headway today during the hearing.
ohcomeon @ 37
This, I fear, is true. We pay their salaries, but in the never-ending search for funding for campaigns to keep their jobs, the people [and companies] that want never-ending war pay the cost of campaigns. Another argument for public financing for all elections. Money doesn’t equal free speech, it only distorts free speech.
snowbird42 @ 45
At least we’ll have a chance to watch Prince answer the questions and then will be able to make some judgments on our own.
Rayne @ 47
More details on Blackwater activities in Iraq; lots of shootings, and no accountability.
Waccamaw @ 41
She is doing it right now.
Rayne — what’s happening with the Michigan shutdown?
SufiLizard @ 35
yes!
selise @ 53
we should have one of these every day
I wonder how many years the troops will actually have to STAY in Iraq to make this president a success?
Last night on the drive home, NPR had some bozo on saying that the highest number of IED’s found in Iraq are made in Iran. It made me sick, I tell you.
Would we expect anything else?
At least they put it on the front page and not A8.
ccmask @ 55
He doesn’t care about the troops. The continued presence is the success of the Unitary Executive.
Scarecrow @ 52
I live in northern Indiana where we get some Michigan News. I don’t know all the details off the top of my head, but I know they have temporarily avoided a shutdown by expanding sales tax and I believe one other measure that I can’t remember off the top of my head. But it’s my understanding these are only temporary measures.
Sorry I can’t provide more detail.
Scarecrow:
Excellent work, especially in showing media
manipulation of ‘numbers’.
Nonetheless, the d’s leadership is NOT hard of hearing. They simply do not think or feel as we do about tings.
Apparently, as there is little, if any, evidence to suggest otherwise, their calculus is simply this:
1. The more death, destruction and mayhem,
the ‘better’ for them.
2. The ‘Unitary Executive’ will be theirs
soon enough.
Yes, by all means, pressure them, flood them with phone calls, letters, and E-mails, hound them, hammer them, embarrass or try to shame them. But do not expect to accomplish much.
For most politicians in Washington, there is too much to be gained (in many ways) by ‘Staying the Course’.
It is not ‘the people’ who are cynical.
ccmask @ 55
Remember the Hundred Years War? Longer than that.
dakine01 @ 60
I don’t think our economy can take much more as it is right now.
‘You can’t armor your way out of this problem’
Part 3 of Rick Atkinson’ series
SufiLizard @ 58
Thanks. I had missed the news on this; last I heard, the Gov was telling non-essential state employees not to show up on Monday.
ccmask @ 61
I guess that means a draft?
Scarecrow @ 28
Great! Time for another donation to the cause.
Toby Wollin @ 42
quite possibly. but have you read the latest on AT&T’s new ISP acceptable use policy? apparently users are not allowed to “damage or disparage the reputation of AT&T or its Service(s),” or their service can be immediately cancelled.
i wonder, is it too much to hope they will be asked about that?
just because things are bad, it doesn’t mean they can’t get worse.
selise;
If you’ve not had the chance, you asked me to remind you about the Gary Hart visit; I feel it goes a long way in providing example regarding d’s leadership’s annoyance with us.
The tone and attitude expressed is quite clear.
Elliott @ 54
I’m actually working on making some small progress on that — at least in my small part of the world.
I’m trying to organize a Peace Workgroup with representatives from as many area churches as will participate. Of course since I will not be a unitary executive, I can’t control exactly how this will develop, but I envision it as a permanent organization finding ways for the religious community to “actively” promote peace.
I think we can get a good group together in this area so largely influenced by anabaptist theology. Right now, I’m just trying to get some key, influential people to get behind this and from there, I think we can form an active, and influential group.
Scarecrow @ 43
when i called this morning, they told me it would be webcast… well, fingers crossed.
Christy has a new thread ready.
Scarecrow @ 38
I found this:
Deteriorating reviews of congressional job performance are linked to a broad-based assessment that Congress has not accomplished much this year. Although Congress has passed four of the Democrats’ “Six for ‘06″ agenda items and a promised overhaul of congressional ethics and lobbying rules, more than eight in 10 Americans, including large majorities across party lines, said Congress has accomplished “not too much” or “nothing at all” this year.
The poll data is elusive (as well as the methodology). Where can I find that?
musicsleuth at 65 — Thanks much — we really appreciate it. Am trying now to find out where I can listen to the Goldsmith hearing, because it looks like C-Span won’t have it live (Senate is in session today, at least it looks that way at this point, as is the House, and they have to do live floor coverage before anything else.) Am on phone wit Judiciary staffers to see if they are livestreaming and will let everyone know when I know…
Lord Amighty, there’s Issa on the floor of the House, first one up. He’s the vanguard of Blackwater’s defense.
Judiciary committee staffer confirming on the webcast for me. Woo hoo!
Many of us watched the testimony of Jeremy Scahill
http://www.nationbooks.org/p/s….._testimony
“While the company’s operatives are indeed soldiers of fortune, their salaries are paid through hundreds of millions of dollars in US taxpayer funds allocated to Blackwater. What they do in Iraq is done in the name of the American people and yet there has been no effective oversight of Blackwater’s activities and actions. And there has been absolutely no prosecution of its forces for any crimes committedagainst Iraqis. If indeed Iraqi civilians were killed by Blackwater USA last Sunday, as appears to be the case, culpability for these actions does not only lie with the individuals who committed the killings or with Blackwater as a company, but also with the entity that hired them and allowed them to operate heavily-armed inside Iraq–in this case, the US State Department.”
We are going to hear Erik Prince tell the Committee how outstanding Blackwater they are. So why not be willing to fall under oversight and be held accountable?
Rep Issa on the floor doing his best to undermine oversight. Damn no mystery why there has not been any oversight. Just listen to Issa.
you know, i don’t give money to the democrat party anymore. And I don’t believe I support any of these people for president (i was going to call them “animals” but that would be unfair to our furry, scaley, and or exoskeletoned neighbors).
the person who wrote that the mopredestruction the btter for the dems, and that the Unitary Executive power will be theirs soon enough is right on. That’s exactly what this is about. they want to wiretap and eavesdrop and detain people indefinitely too.
selise @ 44
Christy Hardin Smith @ 72
yeah, there’s not even a cspan audio feed today from capitalhearings.org… i was told that the SJC would be webcast, i hope that is the case… if so, i will try to make an audio recording since the SJC is not good about keeping video archives of their hearings. if there is no webcast, i will cross my fingers that polticsTV will be there to make a video.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 74
great! scarecrow’s comment above had me worried!
David W. Bartoo @ 67
I did not catch that at all.
Scarecrow @ 52
Sorry, Scarecrow, work called me away.
You can follow along here with the continuing Michigan budget saga. We’re currently under a 30-day continuation budget (more details here), signed by the Governor only with the proviso that bills containing revenue increases were passed. I hope we don’t have to do this all over again in 29 days…
…. Sort of rules out H Clinton, hein, the Democratic Party’s dynastic “Bush In Drag!”

GOP Is Losing Grip
Better EPU’d than never!
For once I’m part of the majority!
OPEN LETTER TO HARRY REID:
In Nov. 06 the Democratic party became the majority in the house and the senate. It’s time this majority starts enjoying some of it’s PERKS.
1.. Only bring bills to the floor that is in the
best interest of the American people and can
advance the Democratic agenda, eg SCHIP.
2.. Block all repuKKKan bills that advance their
argument and agenda, eg. condemning MoveOn.org.
3.. Bully the repuKKKans into voting with you by
threatening to refuse all their bills they want
to introduce on the floor.
4.. Use the bully pulpit to put THE DEMOCRATIC
AGENDA in front of the American people.
5.. HOLD THE PRESIDENT FOOT TO THE FIRE ON IRAQ.
6.. Look into why ALL television sets on ALL
military bases and military installations are
ALL ordered to be tuned to FOX NEWS.
7.. The congress has the POWER to pull rush
LIMPbaugh from the Arm Force Radio stations for
his comment about phony soldiers.
8.. The soldiers need to hear the real news and
stories of the day from other radio hosts like
Ed Schultz.
9.. Use your power and have the FCC investigate
fox news, sean hannity and rush limpbaugh in
their reporting of so-called news stories
which most of the time are erroneous opinions
they put forward as real news to a large
segment of the population….. this violates
section 73 1217 and other sections of the FCC
regulations.
So senator Harry Reid and fellow Democrats, use
your majority in congress to PUSH forward the Democratic agenda and the American People wishes. Remember you are the boss, you are in charge and you are in the MAJORITY so stop cowering when the repuKKKans bark.
ok here’s some questions – so what? (D) incumbents don’t care about public support, they care about the flow of
bribescampaign contributions from corporations and lobbyists. If those interests want to see Bush’s kleptocratic budget supplementals approved, they will be.
if the public support goes down to 1%, but the Axiom of the Least Worst still holds, and there is no 3rd party choice, again so what? The districts are gerrymandered, they can ride it out and not ruffle any feathers in the elite circles they move in, thats what they will do.
Sorry, I do not even know where to put this (O/T). Did anyone catch Ann Coulter on the Today Show this morning? No, of course, I did not watch, so I do not know what she said. I was so stumped that they would give someone so insane, inane, and evil I was almost speechless. Why her? What possible help can she bring? Thank you. Needed to vent.
#76
Last year I gave the dems money 3 or 4 times when they called.
Not any more, now when they call I tell them no more donations from me until all troops out of Iraq. Also say, do that and I’ll send twice as much as before. Doesn’t seem to motivate them though.
About the only thing Congress could do at this point to get out from under bush is to start impeachment. I would welcome it. They could use Nancy’s “table” for firewood!
