OK. I am in need of some levity.
If I can’t get any levity, I will settle for a zed.

Burnsie, :P!!!
Downstairs has been invited.

Dick Nixon was as levitous as I could come up with on short notice, but off-topic and off-color is certainly welcome after that heavy Late Nite thread. Whose idea was that complex topic, anyway?
spew… omg, teddy, that is too funny!
TeddySanFran @ 6
Hmmm… Who was the poster…!!! ;-)
Tonite, is part IV of the War, mainly about Peleiu…!!!
CTuttle @ 8
We need to send a petition to this blog’s owner: Dear Jane, Could we please have our funny poster back on Sunday Nite? Love, the Sunday Folk
I promise levitous next week.
TeddySanFran @ 10
Teddy, that was a fresh cup of coffee I just spilled laughing.
TeddySanFran @ 10
Why, certainly Teddy, Jane could certainly use the laugh…!!! *g*
Leviticus? Oy Gevalt!
BigMitch @ 13
mitch, levitous – not leviticus (laughing)
TeddySanFran @ 6
You asked for it …
Dick Cheney lives to be 105 years old before he finally dies and goes to Hell. He is met at the entrance by Lucifer, who tells him, “Due to overcrowding I must release someone from eternal damnation in order to make room for you. You will step into their shoes, so to speak, and suffer the punishment that was designed for that person for all eternity.
“I will allow you to choose which of two candidates for release you will replace.”
Cheney responds, “Fine. Get on with it.”
They are instantly transported to a deserted bridge, where one can see Ted Kennedy repeatedly, incessantly diving into the water and coming up without whatever it is he is trying to retrieve.
“Don’t think I could do that,” Cheney says.
Lucifer replies, “Fine. Here is your other option.”
They are instantly transported to a bedroom. Bill Clinton is naked on the bed, his wrists and ankles bound to the four corners with neckties while Monica Lewinsky engages in the activity for which she became famous.
“That I can do,” Cheney says.
Lucifer says, “Are you sure?” Cheney nods.
“Ms. Lewinsky, you’re free to go.”

A woman is golfing. On the first hole she gets a par. As she walks to the second tee, she is stung by a bee. It begins to swell — really bad. Her partner says, call the golf pro.
Why call the golf pro? He’s an M.D. who only does golfing on the side. So she calls him.
Golf Pro: “Where did you get stung?”
She: “Between the one hole and the two hole.”
Pro: “Well, one thing I can tell you. Your stance is too wide.”

E.T. go back and check the record. My joke did not make fun of anyone except myself.
Went to Folsom Street Fair today, so I am about off-colored out. My, what a collection of fetishes on display, including the (new to me) Edwardian ladies and gentlemen picnicking on the sidewalk. Long dresses, parasols, picture hats, waistcoats. I didn’t hang around to see what exactly they did; I did realize that their perspective, in that they were sitting down, was pretty titillating.
TeddySanFran @ 22
I am sooo jealous – only been to Folsom once and loved it… been planning on attending but every year something comes up that interferes.
BigMitch @ 21
E.T. go back and check the record. My joke did not make fun of anyone except myself.
I had no idea you were involved in this. Reminds me of a joke I heard today…
How many days until spring training begins?
Teddy, have you ever gone to what i think was called the folsom kinky flea market? iirc, it was held in the summer near downtown on a weekend – picked up some great shoes there.
Ed*ard Teller @ 24
See, BigMitch @ 186 which led to Kirk calling me a prick.
burns, my mother is moving from palm springs to peoria az. i do not think she is aware that is where the mariners hold spring training at.
the little woman is in for a surprise come springtime. she does not like sports other than ice skating.
burnspbesq @ 25
For the Mets awful collapse?
burnspbesq @ 25
I was a little bummed out for you, today, but a lot bummed out for my son who is also a Mets fan.
TeddySanFran @ 22
Really? I hang out in a victorian steampunk sim in Second Life. So this fascination with Victorian/Edwardian life is more widespread than i thought. Granted, the Victorian ’society’ is more idyllic. More the alternate universe if the Empire had been less idiotic and more open. A grand mixture of modern sensability towards life and love and the playful manners of that day and age and the insanely gorgeous clothing. Granted, at 30? I’m one of the younger members of it and i find that vastly amusing!
There were more furverts at Folsom this year than I’ve ever seen before. Sometimes you felt overwhelmed by plush.
mitch, kirk was told to knock it off by me – did you see that?
Suzanne @ 33
Twice, even…!!!
alias, what is a steampunk?
alias, i saw a show Quest on PBS that was all about SecondLife and academics – focused on san jose state iirc.
Yes, Suzanne. I saw you rebuke him twice. I appreciate that, and would have said so at the time, but didn’t want to feed the discussion which seemed to be about Kirk’s opinion of me. Now, I can say it: Thank you.
aliasofwestgate @ 31
There was lots of Ed/Vic today. We saw three very distinguished gentlemen with highly waxed mustaches wearing very elegant top hats — and little else until you got to the feet.
OT, but I just returned from a fundraiser dinner in Noe Valley for Charlie Brown (running against Doolittle in the CA-04). Charlie is a great guy – I’ve donated to his campaign before. His wife Jan brought a banana bread loaf for each guest – yumm!
How about we have a Charlie Brown day here at FDL? Or did I just miss it?
TeddySanFran @ 35
I’m sure you remember the old TV show called Wild Wild West? That was american ’steampunk’. Also the comic from DC Vertigo called ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’. Also classified as Steampunk. Basically steam powered gadgetry far beyond the basics that actually existed in those times. Imagine steam powered ornithopters. *grins* One of our denizens built a ’steamboard’ bsically a surfboard that can fly through the air on steam power. (SL physics are weird, and sometimes fun becuase of what the imagination can come up with.)
TeddySanFran @ 35
A bagatelle of edification, as regards your inquiry, sir
;>)
Before I check outta the laptop in about a half hour, I want to thank Teddy again for one of his very best essays. I’ve learned a lot here today.
darkblack @ 41
Haha! One of my friends was geeking out about that. XD
Good night to all.
TeddySanFran @ 38
Of course ya would only notice the Hats and ’staches, eh?!!!
Markinsanfran @ 39
Isn’t Charlie great? He’s chatted at FDL a coupla times, I think. Once I know in 2006, and I’m pretty sure again in 2007. He was the first candidate added to BlueAmerica for this cycle.
Incidentally, since Late Nite last Sunday, Blue America has grown more than $20,000. Woo-hoo!
BigMitch @ 37
I’m not one to talk, since I tend to do this myself occasionally…
But rising to the bait is not great either, and, like I may have done in a similar spot, you kinda led with your dick in reply, Mitch.

Listening to some old Redd Foxx stand-up on YouTube. Now that is some seriously off-color stuff. But funny as all get-out.

Nice to see the old Gibson/Sterling ethos in a practical setting. The rebirth of craftsmanship, I dare say.
darkblack @ 41
Darkblack,
I have dreams of creating a solar-powered steam-engine skiff for our lake. It would be terribly inefficient, as the steam engine is unnecessary, but so, so cool…
teddy, that is mah-vah-lous news!

Maybe the Dore Alley (Up Your Alley) Fair, in July, on Dore & Folsom? It’s the non-tourist version of today’s event: smaller, dirtier, more painful, and more fun.
I shall bid ya’ll a fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!!
Ed*ard Teller @ 42
Completely agreed…but since is seems to be in short supply around the Lake these days, is it empathic or empathetic?
It will be Monday morning far too quickly. Time for some shut-eye.
Teddy, thanks again for tonight’s post.
Goodnight, all. Only 478 days to go.
darkblack @ 51
Indeed! Part of my appeal was the whole way the society in SL? Was a true community. It was run by and the ideal was set by the members of it all. I’m now a DJ for our parties which go from true victorian grand balls to downright raunchy raves. of course, it goes from haiku duels to limerick contests even during the raves. *grins* The steampunk genre allows for us to be creative even in the ‘confines’ of that society. The innuendo during the grand ball small talk has me giggling like crazy. Becuase you have to be creative without being graphic. Hence the our haiku duels and impromptu limerick contests. Which spring up on the drop of a hat, really. Grand Ball or Rave. But even the true Vickies weren’t as stuffy as potrayed–even THEY had their raunchy moments. *grins*
Edit: Also..the puns run absolutely wild.
Thanks, alias & db. Oh, yes, I understand now.
i think so teddy – it wasn’t called that back in my day but… great bargins for sure
Good to hear that, Teddy. If you want to come to the next one I can save a spot for you :-)
I sat next to Charlie at dinner and told him about my two Marine nephews. One is in the reserves and had his unit activated. The other, who has been to Iraq three times (including the invasion) has been out of the corps for a year but was called back to active duty since he is still in the individual ready reserve.
However I received terrific news a few days ago. The one who’s unit was activated is not going after all due to a rather bad wrist infection. The one who was called up individually called the phone number that came in the fedex package with his orders and tore them a new asshole, so the decided he doesn’t have to go after all!
On top of that, by brother’s wife is pregnant (after trying for years) and yesterday was my birthday. All in all a great week :-)
happy belated birthday, markinsanfran and congrats to your brother and his wife
Ed*ard Teller @ 52
All one needs is imagination and the will to ask “why not?”,ET.
Whether the creation is a trifle or the savior of civilization pales beside the harnessing of the creative process.

Both are good, imo.
That sorta reminds me of my time in the UK, trying to master Brit speak.
As I recall, “I have a fantasy” was incorrect usage there. In proper UK speak, one should say “I have a fancy”. Subject to great discussion in the departmental tea room. Or so I recall.
Thanks Suzanne :-) Going to sleep now. Just watched the first episode of season 1 of The Outer Limits (the 1963 original) on my new iPhone (birthday present). Need to sleep now – work to do tomorrow so I can keep supporting the dems :-)

Monday headlines come out in four hours here. Ted Stevens’s son Ben stupidly went on to a wingnut radio talk show Thursday and jumped all over another wingnut, so the pressure is obviously mounting. Ben Stevens’s voice didn’t crackle, so he was calling locally, which means he’s back from the big-oil escape job he had in the Arctic for the past six weeks. State Representative Vic Kohring’s trial begins later this month, and I’m going to attend every day I can because he’s so nutty, and I was the first person to come out publicly criticizing him, 12 years ago, when he was a local saint.
Valley Girl,
I have a godmother from Liverpool, so i grew up hearing UK speak from an early age. I remember being scolded at about 7 for using ‘bloody’ correctly. *grins*
I really never forgot it and the expletives have snuck back into my vocabulary again. Particularly after i dated a guy from Stratford for a few years. So i have the ablity to ‘hop’ between the mannerisms without much problem. The expletives are fun to use at work, since not everyone quite gets them as ’swearing’ offically. I’d never be able to get away with it in Canada or england though. (my grandma in canada still uses old uk slang as expletives as well.)
Thanks for an illuminating and wide-ranging discussion, ‘pups, and for the grace with which we conducted it.
I still hew back to selise’s great African proverb:
Seems to suit well so much of what we preach and do here.
Til tomorrow, then….
you being at his trial will totally drive him nuts, et. ben’s ship either came into port with him wishing it didn’t or he got an ok to come ashore from home. perhaps they wanted him out of the area only for the trial that just ended
::pokes her head in:: I think I’m finally just about done with pickles! I’ve got at least four gallons, all told.
We’ll be eating a LOT of garlic dills!
g’nite teddy and sleep well – there are still comments coming in on your downstairs thread you may want to check out.
TeddySanFran @ 69
That’s what I’ve always thought.
Teddy, thanks for the excellent post and discussion at late night. I learned a lot and will be on the phone tomorrow to my critters (none of whom will listen).
liss, good thing they keep (laughing) hope ya’ll like garlic dills a lot!
Suzanne @ 77
Vic is so nutty that my being there will reassure him that he is totally innocent. I can’t wait to write about it. If I wear an Ayn Rand T-shirt, his attorney will be wanting to take me out into the men’s restroom and…..
tap-dance? that may be illegal in some states and airports, et.
Liss @ 78
Yum! Good job. I’ve got about half that much beets to pickle yet, and I’m done.
i’ve made cinnamon raisin apple butter and i’ve done jams and jellies but never veggies.
Suzanne,
Compared to smoking salmon, any veggies are easy. Can’t wait to share some with you.
aliasofwestgate @ 75
Bloody is really really a bad word there! Sounds pretty innocent to American ears.
And, one of my memories there was having my supervisor say that he was feeling knackered! And, I had to ask him to explain that. Which, he had a hard time doing…
Suzanne @ 81
Me, not quite so much. My family though, they adore ‘em.
Ed*ard Teller @ 84
Ye gods, I wish someone in my family adored beets as much as I do. I always feel bad pickling them when I’m the only one that eats them.
The cool summer this year put paid to most of what we grew. Even my husband’s usually bumper crop of tomatoes was small. Everything I’m putting up this year is from the farmers markets.
et, and i’m looking forward to tasting some of your smoked salmon. gotta sell this blasted place first in order to get up there.
I must bid all a good night, as well…But before I do, a joke.
George Bush goes to his reward, but finds to his chagrin that those celestials in charge of his spiritual destiny were unfooled by his pious platitudes…And for his myriad sins, he is cast downward.
Greeted at the gate of Hell by Auld Nick, he finds himself escorted to where he will spend eternity…A cavern containing a lake of bubbling monkey feces, in which he will spend his punishment in timeless fashion submerged up to his chin.
All his compatriots are there…Rumsfeld, Rice, Abrams, and many others all desperately attempting to make the best of a bad situation and failing eternally…Yet, among them stands Nixon, sweaty and unshaven as usual but appearing somewhat composed by comparison, no doubt due to the fact that he is only ankle-deep in the same stinky quagmire as his fellows.
“Hey, that’s no fair!”, hollers Bush. “Tricky Dick done just as much bad stuff, how come he’s not up to his wattles in doo doo?”
And Satan replies, “He’s standing on Cheney’s shoulders.“
;>)
wicked evil laugh, db
I think the reason i never had much of a hard time with it is because of that childhood. That and my mom still has a taste for british tv. I grew up with her watching many of those in addition to the other influences. I can understand about it being hard to explain becuase to me? It just ‘is’ that way, and that’s all there is. I get most of the slang to this day, but there’s a bit that’s above my head since i’m not able to hear it constantly. So i miss out on the newer variations.
I do hope you had a good time despite the confusion! I found england very welcoming on the two visits i had there some years ago. I want to go back.
BTW: knackered: ‘tired out, plum tuckered out, etc.’ That’s the closest i can think of it in our own words.
TeddySanFran @ 69
And, then there’s this:
Psychopathic means one is a psychopath. Psychopathic means possessing psychopathy. Or psychopathology… (as in, a description of a person who liked to blow up frogs with firecrackers in his youth, and now has turned to global mayhem).
Anybody up?
Sounds pathological. Should I go read the last thread?
i’m still here loohoo
My late night economics tutor Montag seems to have gone missing. Did I miss something in the 3 weeks I was gone?
::yawns:: I just counted: 12 quarts and 15 pints. The mind boggles.
I need to think about sleep soon. :p
aliasofwestgate @ 93
Uh, well, that was not quite my understanding as to the literal origin. I thought it had something to do with having one’s balls cut off. Maybe I was misinformed.
Valley Girl @ 100
Heh. Knackers is a word used for those bits, but no that word came from being tired enough for the knackers to drag you off – the people who took the old and tired horses to be turned into dog food and glue.
SunnyNobility @ 98
I have not see Montag of late, either, but my reading of threads has been a bit hit or miss. But, he was/is one of my faves too.
http://knackerman.com/
I think knacker has to do with old horses… maybe the person who slaughters them.
Liss @ 101
Thanks Liss! I knew the meaning of the current usage but not the origins. I never got very far into the etymology of what i’ve heard at one point or another most of my life. I just know what it meant now in modern conversation. Still my limit, unfortunately.
the things i learn here still amaze me, after all this time

From “Slanguage – a dictionary of IRISH slang” (ISBN 0-7171-2683-8)
knacker [n. -idem, buyer of worn-out horses for slaughter, 1812, ON knakkur, saddle, derog.]. Tinker, itinerant; gen. term of abuse.
knackered [p. part. as adj., pre-dating modern sl. usage]. Finished, killed. {current context – exhausted (my addition)}.

What is this Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week fuckery?
tw3k, how do you make the third letter in your name? Now to read your link…
Tw3k @ 112
Knacker/knackered was one of the first distinctions I had to learn when I moved to Ireland, one being not PC (owing to prejudice against the “traveling” community); the other (acceptable) a state of being. I just transcribed the Slanguage dictionary for meaning, not context example. I am not sure which direction the usage spread, I’m partial to the origin being Irish, being partial that way.
I am always amused at the use of “ride” between Irish and Yank, again taking the Irish use as base.

Loo Hoo. @ 114
I copy and pasted . It’s UFT character.
Arnie @ 115
Ah, cool. It is interesting the different meaning of words across different english speaking countries.
By “traveling” community do you mean nomadic sorts?
selise @ 116
Sure does! Did you see terrorismawareness.org? Extremely racists. Freaky!
is it just me, or are the fdl functions preview, submit comment and refresh comments running exceedingly s l o w l y ?
selise @ 120
They bugger up for me once in a while. Usually a reload or browser restart fixes it for me.
twȝk @ 119
wow.
the freaky thing to me, is that this is universally condemned as bigotry.
if the every reference to muslims or islam were changed to jewish – then i think (hope?) everyone would see the ugliness for what it is.
scary that anti-muslim bigotry and hate is so acceptable nowadays.
twȝk @ 121
tried that.
i notice i only have this problem when “edit this comment” is present (in safari).
That site looks like something the Aryan Nation would put up. Wonder if the Jewish Defense League is all over this.
twȝk @ 118
The two “groups” in Ireland are the “settled” community and the “traveler” community; landowning v. itinerate would be one distinction, there are language differences also as well as “cultural”, travelers are thought to be related to european gypsy/roma by the settled community and there may be some cultural simularities as well that give rise to that perception.
Oh yes, for affirmation, use “Roger that” with extreem caution.
twȝk – may i throw more error msgs your way?
Today the petroleum industry prospers, by shifting the cost of the “Iraq War,” what is essentially a start up cost, to the American taxpayer on money borrowed from foreign interests. This reality, when viewed against a backdrop of forever increasing energy costs ($80.00 per barrel oil) in addition to the loss of fathers, mothers, sons, daughters and non-combatants in an untenable “Iraqi War,” while the perpetrators of 911 have not been eradicated is absurd. Now the administration, like a snake with its back to a corner is determined to further morph the mission, will strike Iran. Our leader’s “servile prejudice” to money and oil dictates all, as we consume.
Bush is more the liar and manipulator than RMN was, with maybe, greater consequence for America and the world? Restore the “Constitution!!!”
Good morning, pups. Today in the NYT Roger Cohen says it’s dangerous to assume that the rest of the world will stop hating us when W. is finally gone. Paul Krugman wonders if Countrywide Financial, America’s largest mortgage lender, is the second coming of Enron.

Looks like Angelo Mozillo, CEO of Countrywide was selling shares at the same time the company was buying them.
selise @ 122
It such a big ball of extreme ugliness and overt propaganda. Talk about the difficulties involved to support free speech. What if this vile propaganda instigates someone to beat a muslim to death?
I can see raising awareness of the ugliness and brutality of extremists but this is just ugly.

any early birds want to take a look at this week’s list of congressional hearings…. here it is.
i’ll post more on (highlights, etc) during the first thread this morning.
selise @ 134
Hmmm. Will it build without those bundles?
The staracademy.tiff error is fixable by adding a staracademy.tiff to the project.
3BTV-Info.plist is there so it may be that it was not properly added to the target.
I’m not sure PluginInterface.h wouldn’t be found. The rest of the Plugins import that same file so it maybe not be added to the target as well.
Maybe just try building CocoaJT again and see far it gets.
Thanks, selise. The Supreme Court begins it new term today via WaPo.
The court’s high-profile agenda features a fourth examination of how the Bush administration and Congress deal with terrorism detainees, a separation-of-powers case that tests the limits of a president’s power, and a host of discrimination and employment law cases. Last week, justices added the constitutionality of lethal injection to the list and said they would, in the midst of the 2008 presidential election, decide a fiercely partisan battle on voting rights.

Hey Loo Hoo, raven. I’m in California and just finished a conference on creativity and writing. Feel like I just made a dozen new friends. We are going to keep in touch by email and help each other with our writing.
Couple of people there read work that they wrote between the first and second days of the conference. Just blew me away with their originality and depth.
