The fundraising quarter ends at midnight tonight. As you well know, “early money” reaps many times its value over the course of a campaign relative to last-minute donations given in the final days.
I’d like to suggest giving to the four Blue America candidates in congress who did NOT vote for the McCarthy-esque bill to censor MoveOn: Tom Allen (running against Susan Collins-Lieberman in Maine), Steve Cohen (fighting off the efforts of Harold Ford, Jr. to unseat him), Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and Hilda Solis (D-CA).
Voting with your dollars is a language even the simplest congresscritter can understand.
You can say thanks and donate here.

End of the quarter for Diane Benson, who WILL unseat that corrupt bastard, Don Young!
Jane!!!
Good thinking, Jane–reward good behavior as well as punish bad. If only I had money to spare.
Wow…(what will Hadassa say?)…best wishes to Susan Collins Lieberman and her happy beau!
May they both slink off to no-persons land real soon.
What district does Steve Cohen represent?
Ed*ard Teller:
I received an e-mail from Diane Benson yesterday. Looks like she is contacting her 2006 contributors for her 2008 race.
Jane! Is that a fancy new Mac you’re typing on? *s
Can’t kick in today, just gave $100 to 3 candy dates yesterday, Kissell, Wulsin, and Charlie Brown! But the rest of you don’t be shy! *g*
Here’s letter from Act for Change that you are welcome to copy or rework to send your congresscritters on Fisa:
I’m writing today as your constituent to urge you in the strongest terms possible NOT to retroactively excuse the Bush administration’s warrantless wiretapping in upcoming revisions to FISA legislation.
I also ask that you resist demands from the big telecom companies that they be granted sweeping immunity for their cooperation in illegal acts. There’s plenty of evidence that they knew they were violating the FISA statutes, yet they continued with the wiretapping anyway. Violations of FISA are criminal offenses; for you to categorically excuse these illegal acts after the fact would be a travesty of justice.
Our U.S. constitution requires that searches must have a “reason;” the administration’s wholesale monitoring of our communications comes nowhere close to that standard and is not producing any valuable evidence to help catch terrorists. So I ask that you strengthen, not weaken, the FISA law in your upcoming deliberations, and be sure that this administration and anyone who cooperated with them in the commission of illegal acts are held fully accountable under the law.
I look forward to your response to my letter.
Ed*ard Teller @ 1
I’ll be in for everyone above, and Diane too.
Soon as I get the food cooking :P
Loo Hoo @ 9:
Thanks, I just used your letter, slightly modified, to contact my Congresswoman.
Here’s what future Senator Tom Allen of Maine said about this:
“I respect General Petraeus and honor all of our troops. They have done a phenomenal job and done everything that we have asked of them. General Petraeus is a soldier who simply takes orders from the Commander-in-Chief, President Bush.
>
Unfortunately the President and his Republican allies in Congress have continued to order General Petraeus and the rest of our troops to continue fighting. What we need is a plan to bring our troops home.
>
I voted against this resolution today because I believe it is the job of the Congress to bring our troops home, not legislate free speech.”
Hear, hear, Tom!
neurophius @ 6
And if you send here a couple of bucks today, it will count for this quarter. I can’t thank you and all the other pups who supported her last year, when she came close to upsetting Don Young on about 8% of what he spent. I’m hoping that once her Blue America creds are more firmly established, she’ll not just be ActBlue, but Blue America!
Her challenger in the Alaska Democratic Party primary, has been called “the Dick Cheney of Alaska Democrats,” and at a forum in Palmer last week, her challenger – Jake Metcalfe – when answering a question as to why the party failed to support Diane Benson more than symbolically in 2006, basically answered “because Ramn Emanuel told us not to.”
KayInMaine – Nice. Was that so hard? *g*
OK, I’m in for 10 or 15 bucks each before midnight. Sounds too cheap to me, but maybe more after I check my last statement.
Ed*ard Teller @ 13
Victoria Wulsin (OH-02) $50.00
Steve Cohen (TN-09) $50.00
Hilda Solis (CA-32) $50.00
Jerrold Nadler (NY-08) $50.00
Tom Allen (ME-Sen) $50.00
ActBlue $25.00
Total $275.00
I’m kicking in for Victoria Wulsin too, because Ohio needs her.
Now where can I find Diane Benson, and should we be asking Howie to put her on?
Eureka Springs @ 14
Well, there was a time when it was easy to put the Constitution & the American people first. Tom is still living in the “Dark Ages” of Democracy and we are thankful for that! Suzie-Q-the-Reich-Wing-Jackboot-Licker-Collins believes that it is her job and others to make sure people die and give up their rights in the name of George Bush’s style of democracy and she believes that the freedom of speech is only allowed for the Swift Boaters of our country, which is so modern in thinking if you ask me. Give me the Neanderthals of democracy, you know, the people who kept respecting the US Constitution after 9/11/01!
OK, Benson too. Poor old AK. I know from my family that there are many very good and promising local and state pols there, who should break through to the national level. They deserve to be sent Outside. The Great Land deserves better.
Ed*ard,
Following your suggestion, I am now in for ‘08.
Wow, I look cheap, huh? I will add on the others mentioned. I guess I need to make it my goal to get near one of the individual contribution limits this year. I guess that is the best pledge I can make right now.

Ed*ard Teller @ 13
Diane Benson (AK-01) $50.00
ActBlue $5.00
Total $55.00
Thanks for the info, Ed*ard.
(Note: I’m able to kick in the 50 per candidate ’cause I happen to have this corporate job, which is slowly, but steadily, crushing the life outta me. I encourage any of youse out there to contribute even 5$, if you can spare it, because they got the guns, but we got the numbers.)
I could have gone to a Carl Levin fund raiser yesterday. He voted against the Moveon.org censure and he had an ammendment to withdraw troops. I was ready to go and donate (not that he needs the dough), but after his “Bomb Iran Vote”, I decided to skip out. Now I know where to send my money. Thanks.
I am in, although, I don’t think I will be eating chicken kiev with the candidates tonight.
neurophius @ 5
Cohen is TN-09. Open the BA page, and you can read more about him.
~~Steve Cohen was a Tennessee state senator for 24 years and he did such a great job that when Congressman Harold Ford decided not to run again, Steve won a 15-way primary and then a 3-way general election—by a landslide. Since then he’s been busy doing something I wish more congressmen would do—keeping his campaign promises. He’s already co-sponsored 4 bills and 2 resolutions—the binding kind—that would end the war in Iraq.~~~
BLUE AMERICA– STEVE COHEN: THE KIND OF FRESHMAN CONGRESSMAN WE CAN ALL BE PROUD OF
Thanks, Valley Girl.
Sounds like the constituents of TN-09 lucked out when Ford gave up the seat to run for the Senate.
Pectopah @ 22
So glad you’re re-directing your money away from Levin. I, too, am crazed at his Iran vote. The only thing theses people listen to is money!
I think we should outlaw sports in a time of war, occupation, or when Habeas Corpus is withdrawn from anyone.
And, if anyone has an extra few $$, one of my favorite BA candidates is Eric Massa. If you don’t have extra right now, please tuck his name away for the future.
Esquire 100
~~No. 35: Eric Massa, the Angry Citizen-
Earlier this year, Eric Massa was among the first people in the country to declare candidacy for Congress in 2008. To him, this seemed a wise decision, despite the fact that he has almost no money to his name, no other job, fresh memories of a battle with cancer, and an uphill struggle in a district that traditionally leans the other way.
And it’s not like he shouldn’t know better.
[snip] So technically he has been a candidate since June 2005, when he announced the first time, an underdog from the start. “I had negative name recognition,” he says. “I mean, the mayor of my town didn’t know me.” He left his $125,000-a-year consulting job and proceeded to wipe out his savings. He campaigned like a maniac, traversing upstate New York’s conservative-leaning 29th District in a dilapidated minivan, gathering donations of fifty dollars here, a hundred there, and heartbreaking five-dollar pledges from little old ladies at the veterans’ hall.
Four days after losing, 52 percent to 48 percent, he was cleaning out his garage. He was exhausted, depleted, in a daze. Then his son called him to a family meeting, and his wife and kids told him to run again.~~~
If you didn’t catch this in the NYT this morning, here are some Iranian blogger comments on Ahmadinejad’s visit to Columbia.
How could our government even consider bombing these people?
Hey guys, we are having a fundraiser telethon on BlogTalkRadio tonight for Blue America candidate in IN-06 Barry Welsh at Candidate’s Corner with ClammyC, ThereIsNoSpoon and Brian Keeler as well as yours truly discussing the race. Come on over and help us out! We’re also auctioning off items including a copy of Charlie Savage’s book Takeover donated by Jane! Stop by Barry’s Blog for more info.
neurophius @ 25
Of the four on Jane’s BA list he is the ONLY Freshman congressman. It takes a lot of guts to make the start that he has. Yes, there are other BA candidates who are Freshman congress critters. But Steve has really excelled.
I gave to Steve Cohen, not a lot but more later , I hope

I wonder if this is the same person who interpreted President Ahamadinejads speeches in the past that Juan Cole has re-interpreted.
Wonder if Micheal Ledeen hired that interpretor?
These statements are suspicious.
Speaking about candidates and whom to support, does anybody know about this Mike Lumpkin running against Kim Jong Il Hunter Jr in CA-52 (the seat Duncan “Il Sung” Hunter Sr is trying to make hereditary in California)? Does he have a shot and is he a progressive? His answers to questionnaires seem to make him out to be pretty decent.
Valley Girl @ 24
Cohen is fabulous. He stepped forward in the House Judiciary committee hearings and impressed the hell out of me first time out of the gate.
I’m in. Gotta go get the plastique.

Some one below asked about the Bush-Aznar transcripts from just before the Iraq war. The whole transcript, or at least a big excerpt (haven’t had time to read all the way through yet), is posted at Juan Cole’s site. The post below contains Cole’s comments, reaffirming his contention that the transcripts prove on several levels that Bush is a bona fide war criminal, and responses to crtics of his view, and then the transcripts:
Friday, September 28, 2007
Bush-Aznar Transcript: The War Crime of the Century
I made two claims about the transcript published by El Pais of Bush’s conversations with Spanish leader Jose Maria Aznar on 22 February, 2003, at Crawford, Texas.
The first is that the transcript shows that Bush intended to disregard a negative outcome in his quest for a UN Security Council resolution authorizing a war against Iraq. Bush wanted such a resolution…
…
The second claim that I made was that Bush was aware of, and rejected, an offer by Saddam Hussein to flee Iraq, probably for Saudi Arabia, presuming he could take out with him a billion dollars and some documents on Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction programs….

The person to whose campaign I would be most likely to contribute – if it was legal, which it isn’t – is Diane Benson.
Sorry ET, best I can do is good intentions.
by ‘below’ I meant the previous Charlie Savage thread.
ET and I may not agree on very much, but we are in complete agreement about the importance of supporting Diane Benson, and defeating her Democratic opponent, Jake Metcalf.
finifinito @ 30
Howie talks about him here…
Just a few snippets from Howie:
~~Last time around, in 2006, Barry ran a Netroots savvy, groundbreaking campaign whose official website resides in the US Library of Congress as part of the Election 2006 MINERVA collection created to document the online history of the 2006 elections. []
When election night rolled around, November 7th 2006, Barry lost his race against Pence, but something unexpected that nobody, not even Barry, thought would happen. As returns rolled in, it became apparent that Barry’s little campaign-that-could, had beaten the odds to crack 40% of the vote. Now I know some of you read that figure and think to yourself “only 40%? Why is this guy so impressed by 40% of the vote?”…. This is a district that is so red the previous Democrat that ran in 2004 got 31% of the vote. ….[]
The man is an animal on the campaign trail; I mean it! He doesn’t know when to quit and if you tell him to take it easy, it makes him drink an extra can of Mountain Dew and get started earlier than he was planning to.~~~~~
Any more questions about BA candidates? I seem to be in mode Google. ;)
I don’t like it when the politicians talk.
wesgpc @ 39
WHAT. THE. FUCK.
Please, everyone, read the Juan Cole article linked to in wesgpc’s comment. This is the smoking gun. I know that everyone here is convinced that Bush is a war criminal. But here is proof that should convince the rest of America. Do check it out.
If you need a fail-safe barometer of where our country stands on the precipice of fascism, watch how much traction this story gets. Only a government controlled media would suppress this story. If it is not on page one everywhere on Monday, then you may know for sure that the protection of a free press is gone-johnson.
I am very glad for sites and organizations like FDL, ActBlue, MoveOn that ID good promising candidates. Right now, we are in such a dire mess that willingness to kick some butt is more important to me that being exactly correct by my political leanings.
I think Webb is good because he has shown that he willing to kick ass and take names, to vote and not vote on his beliefs, even if in some ways he is much more conservative than I amm and I dsagree with a few of his votes very much. We need ass-kickers now more than Pelosi and Reid and others like them.
Webb also is good to quote on the criminality of Bush admiistration. I was not aware until recently, of his opinion piece before the Iraq invastion, in which he called it exactly right: the administration DID NOT INTEND TO LEAVE IRAQ, that it had ulterior motives.
Prediction is hard, especially about the future. Webb nailed it, and I recently saw him bascially dismiss some celeb national affairs diva pundit who tried the ploy of feigned outrage and disbelief at Webb’s accusation. As in: you aren’t actually really really saying that Bush and his Very Serious and Responsible grownup crew were dishonst!!???’. Webb’s response was more or less “Are you simple minded or what?”
We don’t want to make the mistake of Cheney-Bush of discarding a divide and conquer strategy for a divide-your-allies, unite-your-enemies strategy.
Even if Webb is too conservative for me in some ways, I would vote or contribute for another Webb. After constitutional government is preserved, we can fight it out with people like Webb on other issues, if need be.
I am also leery of focusing too much on punishing some of newly elected Dem representatives for making mistakes. Better to positive and find more good new people to support. Better to finance new faces, and tell any Bush dogs, or wafflers or timids that we need to spend resources on electing more good congresspeople than focusing on negative of punishing them. They will get the message either way, and positive approach will do more to encourage grassroots participation by voters.
Hey wesgpc! xxoo (remember me?) ;)
Valley Girl @ 48
Sure do. But, you are like me, and have gone by more than one name in the past, I think. I was looking for your name awhile back after a re-appeared. I have to go outside for last bit of afternnon sun here before weekend is over. Good to see you’re still here.
I contributed yesterday to BA in anticipation of a big pay packet this coming wk, but reading RevDeb’s comment upstairs reminded me that Steve Cohen was truly impressive in the HJC hearings. He’s really focused on oversight- rates an additional contribution from me today. Go, Steve!
wesgpc @ 49
Nope. Always been Valley Girl. I think.
Valley Girl @ 28
Eric is running against Randy Kuhl – I sent Eric money a bit ago through BA and recently received a nice postcard(from his old campaign) with a personal message from him scrawled on it. This is not my district – but anyone like this, who is out to oust Randy Kuhl, is work some bucks.

Shifting Targets
The Administration’s plan for Iran.
by Seymour M. Hersh October 8, 2007
In a series of public statements in recent months, President Bush and members of his Administration have redefined the war in Iraq, to an increasing degree, as a strategic battle between the United States and Iran. “Shia extremists, backed by Iran, are training Iraqis to carry out attacks on our forces and the Iraqi people,” Bush told the national convention of the American Legion in August. “The attacks on our bases and our troops by Iranian-supplied munitions have increased. . . . The Iranian regime must halt these actions. And, until it does, I will take actions necessary to protect our troops.” He then concluded, to applause, “I have authorized our military commanders in Iraq to confront Tehran’s murderous activities.”
Loo Hoo. @ 29
I think there was a comment early this morning on a thread here with a link to a story about a woman (somebody Canda?) who in pretty high up in the Administration, who was in the UK and made the comment that she didn’t like “any Iranian.” With people like that in the Administration, who needs to think logically?

Blue America: Eric Massa — We Welcome Back A New York State Hero
Toby- Above is link to FDL chat w/ Eric Massa.
I was totally impressed by Eric Massa. From the FDL chat above (and also the Esquire article) it is clear that the guy is an obsessed campaigner, tireless, tireless.
And, you have to check out his picture in the Esq article above, because that really captures his spirit. I’ve emailed back and forth with him (as well as donating). He is totally totally a great guy. I told him that his BA pic (aka Act Blue pic) made him look like a mean HS principal, and he agreed! That is just not him! But, Act Blue liked the “serious” picture better. Sigh.

I somewhat donated $30, but (foolishly?) divided among all the candidates. It’s all I can spare right now, but I’m not sure what each of the candidates is going to do with $1.11 (or $1.12).
Oh well, every bit helps I guess.
O/T — please forgive me.
From Huff Post:
Sen. John McCain said in an interview published Saturday that he would prefer a Christian president over someone of a different faith, calling it “an important part of our qualifications to lead.”
In an interview with Beliefnet, a multi-denominational Web site that covers religion and spirituality, the Republican presidential hopeful was asked if a Muslim candidate could be a good president.

Well, that may be a record! ;) But, as far as I have gathered from what both Howie and Jane have said at various times, the total # of individual donors is ALSO very important! So, YES.

Jane,
Thanks for bringing Charlie Savage in today. His book is a depressing but necessary read. We can’t say we weren’t warned.
And I’m probably not his biggest fan, but surely one of them.
Jane Hamsher @ 64
Wonderful. If anyone deserves it, it’s you. As a fellow powerbook user I hope to hear your review after you break it in. I am due for a new one soon.
BigMitch @ 46
Big Mitch, thanks for this link. As one comment says, this translation appears to have Bush speaking in complete sentences, using uncharacteristic language and generally sounding like an ‘adult’, this aspect is somehow troubling. But I suspect ‘gone johnson’ as you put it will prevail. Clearly, though, this is is great import and deserves far more attention than the ‘Downing Street Memo’ received. If the media are forced to acknowledge its existence, the kindest possible ‘interetation’ will probably be cited. The basis for Cole’s charges are not manifestly evident in the translation provided and again, looking at the comments on the article, there is a question raised as to the accuracy of certain passages in the translation. Again, not doubting Cole’s
assertions, just seeking greater clarity.
On Topic for a change:
For those of you who go to ActBlue, please don’t forget Barry Welsh (D-IN 6th), running against the odious Mike Pence (R-IN).
Just hung up from a pod-cast with Barry, Fini, NYBri, and others. Please, if you can, throw a few bucks this way. This is a winnable campaign; the removal of Pence, who is, imo, quite possibly a future R presidential candidate, and Grover Norquist clone to boot, can only serve to help the cause of true democratic representation.
Barry can stretch a buck – he proved that the first time around. Thanks for any and all help here.
Eureka Springs @ 68
I love my little one. But applecare will be up in Feb. so will wait until then to see what comes out. Sadly the newer ones are bigger and more to carry. But way faster.
OOOH, looky. I’m not one for buying plastic stuff, but this looks good: an orange impeachment bracelet (text link that will link you again to ADS).
I’d gladly contribute to a FDL fund to buy one for every demme Dem in congress.
Sparhawk @ 63
Well, I’ve read Howie giving the pitch for $5 donations, certainly, with similar math! I suspect he will find this episode very enjoyable.
jayt @ 70
He’s a good guy and true to our principles. He had a big fund raiser scheduled for last week but his sister was taken to the hospital so he had to cancel.
Do chip in a few bucks if you can.
jayt @ 70
Hey! Good for you. And, I mentioned Barry in a link above.
Sparhawk @ 58
And the problem with that (I’ve done the same thing myself) is that we get mailers totally more than what we have contributed. I wonder if there is a way to let the campaigns know that it is a one time contribution so that they don’t spend more than they received in soliciting money. Email thank yous are cheap.
FYI, New post
Loo Hoo. @ 76
Loo Hoo- there has been some discussion about this at FDL before- and, there are pros and cons. I am pretty much with you, but TSF has expressed a different view. And, who says it’s a one time contribution? ;) I mean, there is the first contribution, and then….
I know what you mean, but probably something we shouldn’t worry about too much. One of the great points that came out on the Eric Massa thread was how committed he was to signing letters of thanks to contributors, even tho some of his staff tried to talk him out of it on a cost/ benefit basis.
And, as I have learned from interacting with some campaigns last time around, the very fact that some one has contributed to their campaign gives the candidate a big emotional boost. It does take a huge amount of energy to get out there, and get out there, etc. and I think the “thumbs up” is every bit as valuable, or some times more valuable to the candidate than the bottom line.
Loo Hoo. @ 76
I considered that after the fact. My whole point with donations like that is that I add my small amount to millions of others’ small amounts to add up to substantial numbers.
If they spend $1 sending me (and everyone else who does this) thank yous and further solicitations, it’s just not worth it. I’d say, if the person hasn’t donated $20 (or some other limit), send emails but no expensive paper mail.
do nadler and solis have a race. I live adjacent to solis district and I cant imagine a threat out here in CA. and nadler has been around forever.
please, someone respond….I gave via act blue….but not to these 2.
peterboy @ 80
I think it is important that all of us use the information on BA candidates as “information”, and make our own decisions accordingly. I don’t think Howie (or Jane) would want it any other way. I know that is true for Howie. On Jane’s part, I think part of the message was to highlight the BA candidates who voted for “free speech”.
I read various BA posts, BA conversations with candidates, and so forth, and then make up my own mind as to who I wish to donate to. As I don’t have huge amounts of $$ to give, this always involves informed choices on my part, according to my “druthers”. And, that is exactly what you should do also (and have just done). Like you, I prefer to give money to candidates who are “freshmen” and have done a great job, or candidates who fought an awesome battle last time around, but didn’t quite make it. Or, to someone like Tom Allen who already has served in the House, but now is challenging an odious Republican.
In short, I don’t make any apologies for the choices I make in terms of donating to certain BA candidates and not to others, and you should not feel that you need to do anything other than support the candidates who really inspire you.
Howie gives us great information. And, that is information for us to use, as we see fit. But, I always try to do some extra research, as you have done, and then follow my “druthers”.
Hope this helps.
Earlier this afternoon I put up a post saying I would match all of the money that was donated while I was away watching Jackson Browne do a John Hall benefit concert for any of the Blue America primary candidates I had written about last night. Jane’s post inspired several thousand dollars in contributions from the community. Thanks you one and all. Those who donated to Steve Cohen (as well as Vic Wulsin, Donna Edwards, Mark Pera, John Laesch, Jon Powers)… your generous donations were matched. That cost me nearly a grand. Good cause though!
