[FDL is pleased to welcome back Larry Kissell to Blue America. As always, be polite and stay on topic -- any off topic discussions should be held in the prior thread. Thanks, and help us give Larry a great welcome! -- CHS]
The Republican Party is heading towards a fate they have worked very, very hard to achieve for themselves — that of a ghettoized regional party with dominance in the rump of the Old Confederacy. I hope you’ve had a chance to read Thomas Schaller’s brilliant analysis, Whistling Past Dixie — How the Democrats Can Win Without the South because the exception we’re seeing in NC-08 is even more startling in that light.
Larry Kissell has joined us here before and 667 of us responded with contributions to his 2006 campaign with nearly $11,000. He came closer to beating an incumbent Republican than any other Democrat in the country who didn’t win. After a recount, only 329 votes separated Larry from rubber stamp Republican Robin Hayes.
“That’s darn close,” Larry told me on the phone a few days ago… “to have come from nowhere. I give the people of this district all the credit. I just stood up; I gave them something and they chose to listen.”
Last Saturday they were still listening — only more so — when Larry and a mutual friend, Ambassador Joe Wilson, spoke at an Elect Kissell rally in Charlotte. John over at Crooks & Liars has a note Joe sent Blue America after the rally:
“I had the privilege and honor to address North Carolina democrats supporting Larry Kissell for Congress in Charlotte, NC, last Saturday night. It was an easy sell. Larry, a teacher and former textile worker, is passionate for change and has a detailed command of the issues… It should be a piece of cake, but we all know that every election is hard fought and that the Republicans will do everything they can to hold on to power. Even as I was flying into Charlotte, the NRCC was again peddling the lies about me, and I’m not even running. Does anybody still believe that the President was not misleading the country about the justification for the invasion of Iraq? The Republican propaganda machine is still pushing the big lie even though it is so last year. They take the American people to be fools, and will continue to do so until we defeat them decisively. Larry is our man to do that in this race in North Carolina.
This morning is a much-welcomed return visit from an old friend and you might want to take a look at our last session with Larry. He joked with me on the phone that “to say that I was unknown is an injustice to the word ‘unknown.’” You can’t say that about him any longer and insider prognosticators rate Larry’s race the #1 best shot for a Democrat to beat an incumbent anywhere in the country.
In 2006 Rahm Emanuel didn’t believe in anti-war, grassroots candidates and Larry’s race was, tragically, ignored by the DCCC. “We never did get any financial help from the D Triple C. We had some very good friends up there who were saying, ‘Give this campaign $100,000 and let them answer that one last set of ads and you’ll be guaranteed a victory. But they had their numbers and they were looking at certain things– which they tell us now, were wrong… They did send out an e-mail for us after we won their National Volunteer Day poll.”
“Eventually, when we were down to $31 in the bank they put us on their Red to Blue website… At one time, at the end of the 3rd quarter before the election and we were down to $88 dollars in the bank and my opponent put out a press release saying we weren’t serious. How could we be taken seriously with no money, they asserted. We responded that our bank account looks a lot more like the bank accounts of the people of this district than theirs. And the money started rolling in. People started sending $88 checks and $8.88 checks. Someone sent an $888 check. It was amazing how people responded… Over 10,000 individual people donated and many of those were contributing to a political campaign for the first time.”
In the end Larry spent $779,341. The Hayes campaign, claiming he wasn’t a “serious” candidate, spent $2,475,169 or $40.62 per vote, as opposed to Larry’s $12.86 per vote. Imagine if Chris Van Hollen, who is heavily behind Larry’s campaign this year, had been DCCC chair in 2006 instead of Emanuel! But Emanuel heard Larry Kissell yelling “Bring the troops home” in February of 2006 and he went south… (and west, to back quasi-Democrat Heath Shuler who won and has been voting more like a Republican than like a progressive).
Thinking back on those early days, Larry holds no grudges against any Democrats. That’s not the kind of guy he is. Instead he’s recalling how he and others were asking for the war to end then.
“I thought we should start phasing the troops out then and now we’re in the fall of 2007 and still fighting the same battle. My opponent went on CNN and claimed he had ‘proof’ that Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11… He never questioned the administration’s tactics; he never questioned the strategy; he was just 100% behind the war. You know we support the troops and we support the veterans and he will wave the flag but then lets our fighting men and women come home to horrible conditions in situations like Walter Reed. To me, if you’re going to support the troops, you ask the tough questions. You don’t just support your political party. You support the troops. He’s just echoed whatever little theme they’ve come up with, like ‘Defeatocrats.’ He’s just gone along; he’s never scrutinized a thing; it’s all just been ‘rah! rah! rah!’ We need someone in the game, not someone who’s just on the sidelines cheering and not looking at what’s going on.”
“‘Support the troops’ means a lot more than just supporting blindly what a president says to do. I fully intend to support the troops in all regards; they’re putting their lives on the line for us. And the best thing for our nation and the best thing for the troops is for them not to be involved with that war, which is clearly a civil war. As I said in February 2006, it’s time to start phasing our troops out. We have a threat. Let’s fight that threat in intelligent ways. We have to reassess our relationships around the world. Like a recent National Intelligence Estimate said, we’re creating enemies around the world and we’re creating more terrorists. There’s a way to stop that and a way to start working more intelligently towards our goals.
“I feel that if I had been in Washington, and if more people like myself had been elected… the House leadership would have been offered a stronger dialogue and that they wouldn’t have offered the wrong bills on Iraq. The key is cutting out the sanction for the war in a straight up or down vote and de-authorize the war… whatever we need to do to start bringing the troops home [in a safe and orderly fashion]. There should be a straight up or down vote on continuing or ending this war and then let everyone in Congress go home and face their constituents at election time. I would vote to bring the troops home. I’ve been saying that for 2 years now and that hasn’t changed whatsoever. The Democratic leadership put the wrong bill on the floor; they need to fashion a bill– straight up/straight down– that is a congressional referendum on the war. We need to have the moral courage to get them out of there, not leave them there in harm’s way.”
That’s someone speaking who is running for Congress from a North Carolina district which includes Fort Bragg and includes thousands of military families. And he’s very proud that so many military families are supporting his campaign. They’re his people. He takes the plight of his friends and neighbors very seriously. That too, if you remember from last time he visited with us, is the kind of guy Larry Kissell is.
“After the campaign when I went back to teaching, some of my fellow social studies teachers asked me what was my one lasting impression of what I’d been through and I said that North Carolina has some really good congressmen trying to do the right things for the right reasons, supporting Democratic values as I have learned them through my life.”
Larry and I talked about Brad Miller, Mel Watt, David Price and G.K. Butterfield. “That’s the type of congressman I want to be… with Democrats who support the working person.” No one mentioned the reactionary North Carolina members from both sides of the aisle who are plumb loco, not just Hayes, but other out and out extremist kooks like Republicans Virginia Foxx and Patrick McHenry as well as 3 of the worst Democrats in the country, Bob Etheridge, Mike McIntyre and Rahm’s boy Shuler. One thing I can tell you about Larry; he’ll be his own man– one grounded in strongly-held progressive and democratic values who will make up his own mind for his constituents.
2008 is shaping up to be a good Democratic year in North Carolina. Local races will help bring out lots of Democratic voters in the highest performing district for Democrats in the South without a congressman representing them. Let’s help change that. This is our last Blue America session of this quarter. It’s no coincidence that I asked Larry to join us here today to field questions from the community. If you like what you hear, Larry’s Blue America box is open.
Here’s a little 30 second cable TV spot that we can help Larry put up all over NC-08. It costs $44 per run. If $44 is steep, remember $5.00 and $10.00 donations are every bit as valued. The strength of Blue America is our action as a community that puts all those $44 donations and $5 donations together and helps grassroots candidates stand up to the well-financed insiders.

Howie!
Howie!!
Larry!!
Great post about a great man! Thanks for the post Howie!
Denied a zed, cause I was stuck in the wheel.
Howie! I’ll let downstairs know…
Welcome, Mr. Kissell.
Hi Howie
Hi Larry
How did the quarter go for you?
-Kevin J
Chapel Hill
I’m really excited because the more I looked into the evidence here, the more certain I became that we are going to have another Blue America representative in Congress standing and fighting for our values. Larry’s going to win next year and he’s going to be part of the solution in Iraq– when we have to convince Hillary (or whichever Democrat is president) to end the occupation.
Thank you Howie, I so appreciate this opportunity.
I’m also honored by Joe Wilson to be the first candidate he campaigned for this cycle.
Also hi Lindy.
Do you know if any progress has been made in Lebanon, as Bush promised to help rebuild it? Of course, Bush promised a lot of things.
One thing I can tell you about Larry; he’ll be his own man– one grounded in strongly-held progressive and democratic values who will make up his own mind for his constituents.
Says it all!
Welcome Larry and thanks Howie!
Hey Kevin, I’ll let you know soon. The quarter isn’t over until Sunday at midnight. I’m working day and night to try and raise money to take back this seat.
Welcome back, Larry. I hope everyone gets a chance to read Joe Wilson’s full statement he wrote for Blue America about Larry over at C&L
And, Julie Ann, thanks for that generous pop just now. I’m sure all our candidates appreciated it– especially because the quarter is ending.
Good morning, Mr. Kissel. Thank you for being here. I am taking a deep breath after a long day and morning was spent in contact with NGOs working in Burma. My head and heart are still there. It’s called culture shock returning to US concerns. I will have a question in a few minutes. We are so very fortunate.
Yay, Larry. Great to see you here again. I haven’t visited FDL as much since BlueNC started taking up most of my time, but this is an amazing community site. Great to be here again.
Larry-itLarry Kissell @ 12
Hopefully you’ll get a boost from your visit here today.
Congrats on getting Amb Wilson to come out for you-that’s great.
So has Hayes decided for sure not to retire?
Sandman, I believe Bush’s commitment to rebuild internationally, except for the oil fields of course, are going about as well as the commitments he made to rebuild the Gulf Coast.
Sir,
I have a question that I’m asking all candidates, forgive if I’ve already asked you. It has a bit of preamble.
My husband was a Vietnam vet and POW, who was tortured by his North Vietnamese captors. He suffered from his injuries for over thirty years until his fatal heart attack two years ago.
What will you DO to stop torture as the law, policy and practice of the United State?
With respect,
For Dan,
Heather
How would you contrast the reaction you are getting from military personnel and their families compared to last year?
QuakerGirl, I want to hear what you’re hearing from the NGO’s working in Burma. Please give us whatever news you have.
Welcome, Mr. Kissell. I still have your sticker on the bumper of my car.
Thanks for being here today, Larry. Always a pleasure.
Thanks Betsy.
Thanks so much for visiting with us today, Mr. Kissell.
When your students ask you about your campaign in ‘06, how do you describe the DCCC’s lack of support? A real civics lesson, that.
The Washington Post reported this morning that Democratic candidates for president will continue the Bush Iraq Plan. Is this so? What is your take on this?
Hi Larry. Welcome.
Where are you planning to air that ad? What’s your target audience? Have you thought of adding captions to indicate a bit more directly what it is that you stand for?
Health care costs have been increasing at a rate of 10% per year, this pass year, I believe it was down to 6%, however far above the rate of inflation. In fact, my Oral Surgeon charged me over $1,500 per hour. Is this fair and should patients have any rights.
Heather, I am 100% against torturing POW’s. We can not expect other governments to live up to the Geneva Conventions unless we do. Plain and simple. My heart goes out to you and your family.
When I’m in Congress I will stand firm on this issue I assure you. Fort Bragg is in my district.
Jane Hamsher @ 22
Did you get your new computer? The saladaco?
I donated what I could. I wish you success in this campaign. We need you and people like you to take our country back.
Thank you, Sir. I look forward to your sponsoring or co-sponsoring legislation that will stop the torture.
With gratitude and respect,
For Dan,
Heather
Newtonusr, I’m still teaching my kids in my classroom in North Carolina, as well as a few of those “kids” up in DC.
newtonusr @ 24
Last year we begged the DCCC to support Larry’s campaign but they were too busy helping Democrats and “Democrats” who Emanuel thought wouldn’t rock the boat. Larry’s a boat rocker. This year, the DCCC, under Chris Van Hollen, is fully behind him and begging us to keep getting out the message!
TexBetsy, I will mention your question to my media consultant. This ad is only one of five that we have in the can.
Larry Kissell @ 20
@156 in the previous post I listed some of the recommendations for action. One reliable group is Free Burma Rangers operating out of Thailand with an underground network in Burma. Their site is:
http://www.freeburmarangers.org
Lindy @ 30
Thanks for your generous support, Melinda. That’s how we win! And thanks also to Don in Sacramento and Matt in Keam Canyon. Your generosity blows me away.
Sandman, I believe that we’re going to have to get patients, doctors, insurance and business owners all around the same table if we’re ever going to do anything about the runaway cost of healthcare.
Thank you Lindy!
QuakerGirl, I’m going to go back and read your post and take a look at the FreeBurmaRangers site.
OT…
Howie… I emailed you guys about a primary challenge to Eliot Engel… is anything in the works there?
Thank you Melinda, Don in Sacramento and Matt in Keam Canyon.
Glad to see you are back in the saddle and headng for the finish line again Larry! To make sure your horse finishes first I just sent you $50 thru Blue America. it made me feel so good I gave Charlie Brown and Vic wulsin $25 each too!! Kick Ass on the Reuthugilicans!!
Thanks Az Matt. Brown and Wulsin are good candidates.
Welcome, Larry. I contributed to you in the last cycle and will hop right over to do so now.
In 2006 I volunteered for another candidate that Rahm ignored. Even a small amount would have helped. But no-o-o-o.
Chris VanHollen is my Congressman, and I’m glad to hear he’s pledged to help.
Best of luck!!!
SanderO @ 40
I haven’t heard anything about that but I have heard that one of the half dozen worst renegade Democrats, Jim Marshall of Georgia, whose voting record indicates he’s as big a war-monger as many Republicans, is getting an official primary challenger Monday. I can’t wait to find out more about that!
Howie ! YOU DA’ MAN!
EE is basically an A*P*C DINO and was a war supporter and I have been calling his office for years. He needs to be replaced by a progressive. HELP
Mauimom, Chris Van Hollen has proven to be a great friend, as are you. Thanks so much for your contribution. Have a great Saturday!
Larry,
How is the mood of folks around Ft. Bragg now that Bush is going to keep sending them over to Iraq till the end of time?
We definitely need to clear out the DINOs… they are part of the problem not the solution.
I am shocked that Secretary Rice has told Rep Waxman, she will not testify about Blackwater USA, a company that is paid much, much more than the US Army to due the same job. Would you support the private army’s like Blackwater?
Do you support Sec. Rice decision about what she will discuss and will not discuss with Congress?
Thank you for being here, an honor.
Larry Kissell @ 37
Question about the contractors…
Who authorizes their contracts? Is it the army or the congress? Why would be be paying so much more than it costs to do these things WITHIN the DOD? What is the stated reason for outsourcing these operations?
Matt, you would probably be surprised how willing the soldiers and their families are to sacrifice for our country. What we have to do is ensure that their sacrifice isn’t in vain. These families are just like any other family that might live in your Congressional District. They have questions about why we went to war, what it’s costing our country and what our exit strategy is going to be.
Regardless, they continue to sacrifice for our country and have great pride in what they do.
Larry Kissell @ 48
I’ll be seeing VanHollen tomorrow, since he’s coming to a fund-raiser I’m co-hosting for Josh Zeitz (running to replace Neanderthal Chris Smith in NJ-4). Zeitz is a college friend of the “main” host’s daughter. We have 73 confirmed attendees.
Welcome back to FDL, Larry.
North Carolina is home to Blackwater USA.
Blackwater is under investigation for murder and weapons smuggling in Iraq.
Blackwater has been awarded a $15billion contract for drug interdiction.
Is there any reason we should believe that this organization has honest designs?
How are health, education and social services be affected by the Bush administration in your district? What are peoples attitudes concerning the economy there?
Sandman, Sec. Rice must submit to the authority of Congress. Whether she testifies in public or private is a matter of national security.
I also have great Constitutional concerns about Blackwater and other mercenary contractors.
Larry we need to stop thinking about health care as risk and insurance.
Health care should be thought of as a right and the cost paid for out of our tax dollars and no or little profits should be part of the health system. That may sound like building a bridge for cost, but profits are consuming our economy.
We went from an agrarian one, to a manufacturing based economy, to a service based on, to a financial service economy. We are all about financial instruments and wealth creation and nothing about producing anything of real value?
We need to recalibrate our thinking about work and what the goal of an economy actually is.
Mauimon, please give Chris my best.
Cliff, I’m very concerned about Blackwater, as are many North Carolinians. As I’m sure you know, the Prince family have very strong ties to the Republican Party and its candidates.
These ties have let them operate without sufficient sunshine on their deals. It’s time for that to stop.
Why are we outsourcing military and security needs to private contractors who are doing what the military does or did?
Larry Kissell @ 54
Larry,
I have a nephew in the Air Force guarding prisoners because the army is stretched thin. He voluntered but I would really prefer to see him Stateside again. I realize they have pride in what they do, and the families too, but there is a cost in mental health and stress on families. I have good friend who is Special Forces and missed his kids growing up for a year.
Larry Kissell @ 37
Citizen KisselI, I address you in that fashion because you are, as yet, still one of us. When you are elected, as I sincerely hope you will be, and become one of them, I hope you will not forget us and will shjow us more respect than some ‘big-wigs’ in your party have done.
My question (knowing a number of physicians who support change now and many patients. NOT ‘consumers’ who NEED change), is this:
What legitimate role do you see for insurance companies in the single-payer health care system overwhelming supported by Americans since the days of Truman’s Presidency?
Matt, we’re rated one of the 20 poorest districts in the nation, with the highest unemployment in the state. That’s why it’s great to have places like this to help raise money while exchanging ideas.
Larry Kissell @ 65
I did not know that, is there any chance to create one square mile per county that would be tax free and be used solely to bring back manufacturing jobs to America?
Larry, I know a political talk show host in NC who’d probably be thrilled to interview you for Head on radio. Email me TexBetsy at g mail if you’d like me to set that up for you.
http://headonradionetwork.com/
Matt, you’re absolutley right about these long deployments. We can see how this is wearing families thin right here in the district – economically, how their children are fairing, and the stress is showing in a lot of ways.
The burden on the Veterans’ Healthcare services is VERY troubling to me. It’s underfunded and understaffed. A report came out this week saying the military is not keeping up with the improvements they promised, as the Walter Reed scandal fades to memory for too many.
Larry, what did your name recognition look like at the last election? I’m just curious what % of Dem’s who would’ve made a point to go out and vote for you just didn’t hear (or hear enough) about you?
As a teacher and a candidate, how do you feel about No Child Left Behind? What do you think can improve education in this country?
Larry Kissell @ 68
Any idea how much the soldiers and their families in your district are in receiving food stamps and other social programs?
Just kicked in my $50 and will be following the race with interest. Larry, you are a champion (I’m a teacher too).
Larry Kissell @ 61
I just read that John Hall introduced a bill on Friday afternoon that would prevent the Bush Regime from bringing any more Blackwater mercenaries into Iraq. I’m looking for the eaxct wording. John Amato and I are meeting with Rep. Hall tomorrow to discuss this and other Iraq-related matters with him.
Mr. Kissell, you’ve given me some hope here today. Best of luck to you and please run your ad once on me.
TexBetsy @ 70
Great Question TB! Are you tired of teaching-to-the-test Larry?
I’m in today for Larry, Sam Bennett and Donna Edwards.
Welcome, Larry!
Would you have supported the gift of 363 tons of money to Iraq after the Iraqi government fell and they could not pay their pensions? I an not a cruel person, but the largest transfer of cash in US history, to a country swimming in oil, seems nuts.
do they even test on civics in NC? not here in TX. Amer Govt class is in 12th grade, AFTER the high stakes testing.
David, I assure you as a man raised in the country, I firmly believe “you dance with the one who brung you.”
Like it or not, insurance companies have become an integral part of our economy, and we have to find a way, whether single payer system or not, to make sure our country can asborb all the jobs and financial interests of these huge corporations.
David, I’m sure this conversation will continue. We have a lot to figure out.
Sandman, the 8th District of North Carolina would make a WONDERFUL Empowerment Zone. What a great idea!
Mauimom, thanks for picking up on the $88 dollar theme, with that incredibly generous donation to Larry’s campaign just now!
Larry just went over the $1,000 mark on our Blue America page. This morning people who have been contributing to Larry have also put several other Democrats working for peace over our goals for them this quarter. Vic Wulsin just went over $9,000; Steve Cohen just went over $3,000, our own Blue America PAC soared past $9,000 and both Donna Edwards and Jim Himes are heading right to their $6,000 goals. Thanks everybody for the unbelievable generosity. If Larry wins in ‘08, there will be 8 Democrats out of the 13 in North Carolina’s congressional delegation.
howieklein @ 73
Great news!
But the real battle will be preventing the Bush Regime from bringing any more mercenaries into the United States…
Break the Blackwater contracts!
TexBetsy, I’ll be e-mailing you. Thank you.
As a teacher, I think NLCB needs serious reform. Please go to my website and read my plan.
I don’t see a campaign website above. Is there one?
Matt, I’ll check into that.
MikeB, thank you so much. I hope you’re having a good year teaching!
Larry Kissell @ 79
I work in health care and this is the most reasonable response I have seen.
CocoaBeach, thank you so much.
Hey someone out there, $2.00 more will get Larry to $1,100 even. Chip in now!
Matt, yes I’m tired of teaching to tests. NCLB must be reformed by people that actually have been in a classroom.
Hi Pachacutez.
The nice thing about “evil” is that it brings out so much good.
Sandman, I agree.
In fact, I like your answer at 79 so well, I’m going over right now to chip in another $44
Larry Kissell @ 79
Larry, you are absolutely correct that this conversation must continue, but I question whether insurance companies have evidenced the basic concern for others, meaning the people of this nation, that you express for them, and their financial ‘interests.’ I once worked for a national insurance company and my sole job was to find ways to deny legitimate and necessary (on the part of the ‘insured’)
claims. I did not last long, because I believed that the company, having agreed to cover certain things, should with any concern for conscience, ‘opt’ out. I guess you consider me naive, perhaps, but a contact is a contract, and insurance companies have historically NOT insured those who NEED insurance the most. If you propose to change that paradigm, then I shall listen with great interest.
TexBetsy, yes we test Civics in the 10th grade and US History in the 11th.
http://www.LarryKissell.com
Larry Kissell @ 96
Republican or Progressive version?!
David, my interest with the insurance companies has to do with the fact that they make up a significant portion of our economy.
I can assure you though that I find it reprehensible that they’d would do business that way.
Bush has increased spending 41% and revenue by only 21% and has kept the war spending off budget by the use of supplemental bills.
1.Unbelievably, he is proud of this.
2.He still talks about smaller government, it is just a lie.
For those of us concerned with the lies and crimes committed with this administration, where do you stand on impeachment? And, why?
A flood of generosity just washed over Blue America! Thanks Elliott in New Jersey, Donna in Maryland, Sarah and my old buddy David in NYC, Michael in Madison, Pach, Patrick in Vista (a student? You must be a student of making a lot of money and sharing it generously; you get an A ), Peter in Torrance, and, of course, Joy, who just bought Larry another cable TV spot!
Sandman, as a student of economics this fiscal irresponsiblity is fast becoming am issue of National Security. I’ve been talking about the national debt since the beginning of my campaign.
If the US debt was publicly traded, one of our major stockholders would be China… And I don’t think that’s anything for the Republicans to be proud of.
Larry Kissell @ 79
Isn’t this this whole problem: all those dollars going to insurance companies and their employees (including overpaid execs) that should be going to actual heath care like doctors, nurses and hospitals? It may cause some dislocation but that is where the waste is, not to mention the frustration suffered by those who pay for coverage that insurers then welsh on.
Larry Kissell @ 103
Thank you so much for your answers.
I would highlight this in your ads, you know that Japan is number 1 and China is number 2 in ownership of US Treasuries, but almost nobody knows this.
The 363 tons of cash sent to Iraq is also, a very powerful image in advertising.
QuakerGirl, I believe that if the Congress moved forward with articles of impeachment it would further distract from the real issue, which is ENDING THIS WAR.
Trust me, we don’t want Cheney for President. The lies and crimes of this administration come home to me every time I see my opponent say that Saddam Hussein and people like him were responsible for 9/11.
Thank you Elliott, Donna, Sarah, David, Michael, Pach, Patrick, Peter and Joy.
Your generosity means so much to me!
Regarding the insurance companies, I agree totally. My point is we have to deal with them. We can’t pretend they aren’t part of the problem, therefore they have to be part of the solution.
Larry what do you think the chances are for another ‘front’ in the ‘endless war on terror’ opening in Iran? How do we stop that from happening. Where is the leadership on ending the War in Iraq? I DON’T SEE such leadership, do you?
Sandman, thank goodness folks like you and I are paying attention to those who wrap themselves in the flag while selling our children’s future.
This is one of the major reasons I got into this race, beacause nobody is looking after our kids.
congress takes an oath to protect and defend the constitution. it is your duty to impeach and reveal what has happened to our country period. i will not support someone who will not face the truth. it will take tremendous courage to right this ship. same same same
Larry Kissell @ 108
On thing to look at is ERISA. Insurance companies hide behind it when they screw insureds who have employer provided health insurance. It limits, by the preemption doctrine, the remedies available. There is no right without a remedy and ERISA really cuts out the effective ones.
Larry Kissell @ 107
I don’t know if either is in your district but a couple of home staters just stepped up to the plate for you, Larry– Mary in Randleman and Joseph in Willow Spring. Thanks for of you; much appreciated!
David, Iran is the next front in Bush’s War on Terror. We must make sure that all diplomatic avenues are explored to truly bring peace to the Middle East.
I don’t think the Republican Party cares about what happens to America or the Constitution. I think they have expanded Manifest Destiny beyond our borders and beyond citizens. They have capitalized on ambiguity. Say a word (patriotism, flag, freedom) and it has a different meaning to each person. It is very powerful and hard to argue.
In the meantime, the Constitution slips out of our grasp.
Larry Kissell @ 114
The sooner the better! This just in:
Coyne, if I had been in Congress, I would have worked to both protect and defend the Constitution from the damage that has come to it during the Bush administration.
That said, I believe that the duty now is to END THIS WAR. Believe me, I know it would feel good to exact revenge on those that have trampled on our Constitution, but we have to move forward toward the future.
I’m going to take a look at ERISA.
Larry Kissell @ 117
It is not about revenge. It’s about justice and the rule of law and following the constitution moving forward. If there are not impeachment investigations, what license do we give to future administrations?
Thank you Mary and Joseph.
Larry, diplomatic action is more than necessary, our whole future depends upon it, but where is the REAL pressure to make it happen? I repeat, I do not see clear evidence that anyone in the loftier reaches of your party, ‘the fron-runners’ for instance, are behaving in a manner consonant with what you are saying. I’m very tired of glib talk; I feel we are entitled, as citizens who are aware, to genuine ACTION. What do you think?
Hello again, Mr Kissell, I just bought you one ad buy. Thanks for all your hard work last cycle and this one, and especially many thanks to your family for the sacrifices they are making to ensure your election.
I’m really happy with all your stands on issues, so I’m going elsewhere with my question: have you given any thought to the “electability” issue regarding the very top of the ticket, particularly how it will affect your race against Hayes? Are there Presidential candidates you imagine will do better in your district than others? We hear a lot about the potential negative down-ticket effect of one candidate or another — do you hear much from voters on this?
Thanks very much again for running against the odious Hayes. And for standing firm on your recount last year as well!
TexBetsy, I fully support all of the investigations into the abuses of the Justice Department and the White House to date.
As to the future, we don’t give them license, we give them oversight.
David, I agree, and that’s what keeps me up at night.
Larry Kissell @ 117
this country is in trouble because our elected officials always seem to want to move forward without complete investigations. the truth must be revealed and stamped in stone instead of sand.
Thank you TeddySanFran.
Larry Kissell @ 118
Unless you’re a lawyer or need an insomnia cure, don’t try to read the statute, your brain will fry. Talk to some lawyers who work in that area and they can give you a guided tour. The problem is that courts have determined that anything touched by ERISA will have no state law remedies. What it needs is what’s called a “savings clause” that preserves state law remedies in the face of what is otherwise federal pre-emption.
Guys, I appreciate it so much, but I do have a wedding to attend shortly.
I have time for just a few more.
Coyne, I don’t want to move ahead without the investigations, but I do want to move on and end this war.
Larry Kissell @ 128
If it’s yours you should be there by now….
Larry, this is not to put you on the spot but rather out of deep concern. The Democratic front runners are rattling missiles sounding very bush-like. When the Washington Post reports that the Democrats will continue with the Bush Iraq policy, that is something we need to ask about. What are your thoughts on this.
No, it’s not my wedding, but my bride of 23 years does expect me to be on time.
Larry Kissell @ 132
Larry, I always get the last word at home….
“Yes, dear.”
QuakerGirl, you’ll get no beating around the Bush from me.
We staged our way into Iraq in LESS than a year, we can stage our way out in LESS than a year.
Thanks very much for your time today, Mr Kissell. We’ll have another opportunity to talk again, I hope. Best wishes to the new bride and groom — please remember when you get to Washington that others among us are still waiting for the right to marry!
Larry, when you find yourself ‘up at night’ you might just want to drop in here, lots of us are up late every night as well. The discussion here is thoughtful, erudite and important. Thanks for dealing with the hard questions, we all need to work to find answers’ but this is NOT a ‘business as usual’ crowd, just one of the most relentlessly curious and courageous bunch of concerned citizens you are likely to encounter.
David, will do. I always enjoy it.
Thanks to Howie and all the fine folks at FDL.
I do need to run, but I hope you’ll have me back, and believe me… when I’m up late, I will be dropping in.
THANK YOU!
Thank you, Larry and greetings to your wife. Enjoy the wedding and celebrate life.
Larry, someone from John Hall’s office just donated some money to your campaign. I love when people in politics do that through Blue America instead of thru the DCCC.
Larry, thanks so much for spending a couple of hours with us here today and for your frank answers. And, even more than that, thanks for taking on an “impossible” task and not letting go. I’m proud to know you and look forward to helping you put NC-08 into a permanent realignment that is in sync with the interests of the majority of folks who live there and who have been the victims of this horrible Regime. Enjoy the wedding!
Next Saturday we’ll be meeting Andrew Rice, a very progressive young state senator from Oklahoma (huge Flaming Lips fan) who is taking on one of the worst of the radical right nutcases in the U.S. Senate, James Inhofe.
Thanks for your time Larry. I’ve forwarded your website to our radio host who is based in NC and to the head of the network.
Howie – Thank you for making this possible for us. I know it is hard work to make an on-line meeting happen. Much appreciated.
QuakerGirl @ 142
me too
Since the Democrats are making no progress on ending the war, I don’t see where impeaching the Vice President would make a difference.
I’m going to also add my voice to those saying that including insurance companies in health care is lining corporate coffers, not helping American citizens.
TexBetsy @ 143
Also, thanks.
I don’t think we have to make insurance companies part of the solution. That is akin to working with drug cartels to solve the addiction problems.
Insurance in health is inherently an unethical immoral activity because it makes profit more important than the health care of the people.
Insurance is a microcosm of what has gone wrong with capitalism. it has lost its social purpose at the alter of profit making.
Business MUST be adding value to the economy not simply wealth creator and extractors.
The insurance and the financial sectors have been perverted at the alter of profits and most serve no redeeming social function or add to the value of society.
Insurance companies MUST be taken out of the health care sector TOTALLY.
TJ @ 144
TJ, try to make it back next Saturday. Andrew Rice’s wife is an MD and he’s on the Oklahoma State Senate’s health care committee. They have a LOT to say about this stuff and how to effectively get to single payer.
TJ @ 144
Hopefully, some of our guests are educable.
I do appreciate OPEN MINDS.
SanderO @ 146
Here! Here!
I too worry about all the people employed in health care administration. I favor eliminating profit from health care and moving swiftly to single-payer, but we’ll need to retrain all those Americans whose sole skill is sitting in a cubicle and denying claims, while being underpaid to do so.
QuakerGirl @ 149
Exquisite! And, spot on.
I think there is a simple way to get to a simple payer.
Enlarge the Medicaid and medicare departments to process all payments for medical bills.
Establish a committee to look into profits making in the health care industry.
Purchase for profit health care facilities and make them public.
Establish reasonable costs and fees for reimbursements. If those in the industry aren’t making enough, let them go work in another sector.
Teddy,
Those people in cubicles can and will work for the government processing (not denying) submittals from health care providers.
There will be lots of jobs in the expanded entity which will process even MORE claims… since everyone will be under care who is not now.
And they will enjoy good government pensions.
Well gosh! One of the largest ‘employers’ is the ‘defense’ industry. Guess we’re gonna have to find a lot of jobs. Wait! I know! Let’s rebuild the infrastructure and insulate all American homes to be more energy efficient. But, you know, many people have not been so fortunate when their jobs were ‘outsourced’ for the good of the top 1%.
Oh well, I guess that’s just the ‘unseen hand’
muckin’ about with the undeserving.
SanderO @ 152
There you go again, making too much sense.
This will go on your record!
SanderO @ 153
Oh my! You are making a habit of this ’sense’ business I see. We’ve got a file on you, a whole building dedicated to your good sense.
What are you, a trouble-maker?
Go SanderO!!!
Capitalism has many bad things, but it is a workable system if it is regulated and if it is forced (somehow) to provide a social function or add value to the society.
Listen to this crazy thing I heard from a client.
She tells me she is dating man who lives in Tasmania. He has 1,000 employees and is very brilliant (aren’t they all). He is a mathematical genius. And what does he do? He has developed advanced algorithms for analyzing horse racing and his company makes money by betting on horses in Las Vagas via the internet.
Here is a business that adds nothing to society… except that it employs people… but all it does is extract wealth… and they probably shelter all their income and buy big lovely things and give a bunch to charity.
This is what is wrong with free market unfettered capitalism… that such companies can exist, but not only exist… but so many are looking for similar get rich biz plans.
Hedge funds? Derivative? Trading shares?
Larry Kissell @ 37
Insurance companies do not provide healthcare. They are the brokers that created the crisis for us in seeking medical care. It’s not that health costs are the issue, rather the insurance companies hefty servicing fees that everyone pays. We need to remove the paper pushing, claims denying, for profit insurance companies from the equation. Every citizen should have healthcare as we have given every politician. How?, how do we pave roads, garbage pickup, public education, infrastructure maintenance, libraries, public buildings, parks, firehouses, police stations, army, navy, marines, national guard, congressmen, senators, president, vice president, salaries & retirement packages, etc…? We can tax payrolls, businesses, real estate, corporations, and imports. The money taken out in payrolls every two weeks for the insurance companies, will be put into the US government healthcare fund. Not into the insurance companies pockets, they’re gone. The money saved in paper pushing, claims denying insurance companies will go directly toward the Universal Healthcare System.
Guess who got the zed on Siun’s post!!!
RockPaperScizzors @ 158
So much good sense here today, it’s positively embarrassing. You and SanderO should write more often for the edification of the rest of us. Very fine. Thank you both.
How come firepups can see that this is rather simple?
The reason is that these pols don’t have to guts to say to the insurance pigs… the trough is closing. Go suck some other teat.
When I feel sick I need a doctor not an insurance company.
Don’t you think our’representatives’ should be a tad bit embarrassed to receive ’socialized’ medicine while many whom they claim to ‘represent’ struggle to make ends meet, or, in some cases, even to survive? It is not just insurance companies that would profit from the capacity to feel shame.
SanderO @ 162
I’m blinded by such a simple yet powerful truth. Wouldn’t it be music upon our ears to hear the nurse ask what ails you today rather than who’s your insurance provider?
People who get it consider health “coverage” a perk.
Someone has to pay for everything we consume… including medical treatment. Pols and so forth don’t care who pays… as long as someone pays (for them).
The rest of us have to get into shared risk pools which must make profit and so end up not paying the bills for many perfactly valid claims.
Then they blame it on lawyers who sue for mal practice.
thanks to Howie and the gang for inviting one of my favorite Congressional candidates to join us.
I’m a regular contributor to your campaign Larry, but kicked in $44 to help you start buying ads. Looking forward to the series you say you’ve got in the can.
My oldest Godson, his parents’ only child, just went to back to Iraq.
For the third time.
We’ve got a heap of worries and woes in our nation right now, I know, but this filthy war has got to end.
Good luck and best wishes for a victory for you and the people of North Carolina. Hope when you get to DC you can run some remedial courses in American history, civics, and how our Constitution is our shield and foundation to your new colleagues up on the Hill in ‘09.
Larry–We’ve sold our house and netted a little profit so am donating a little to your election fund. We can use another progressive rep in NC–was just sick to see the Ethridge who used to be our rep, voted against health care for children.
SanderO @ 157
Milton Friedman economics has turned our great nation into the One-Eyed Cyclops. Why are’nt we embarrassed and shamed by american hunger for goods that overflow our closets, garages, basements, and worse of all rental storage spaces. Material goods used to fill a bottomless void of wants. We are an out-of-control nation of greedy consumers, not caring whether children hand dyed our clothes. People in China, India, Pakistan, and Indonesia in lockdown compounds making toxic cheap goods for us. We’ve created poverty worldwide and consume with a passion. A voidless passion of worshipping at the altar of capitalism. And still we envy the vacuous, spoiled, mindnumbing, anxiety ridden paranoid gated community, Blackwater protected, wealthy elitists. For what they own. George Bush has been the fearless cheerleader of spend spend spend. And we’ve lost our way in the wilderness of consumerism. Where the hell is our moral compass?
