lucy has deep thoughts(Lucy ponders at left)

Tonight’s Friday Firedog is a very special young lady who is very near and dear to our hearts, Jane’s youngest daughter, Lucy.

Okay, well, technically, Lucy is really Kobe and Katie’s daughter, but I swear, when no one thought that I could hear, I heard all three poodles addressing Jane as “Mom”.

“Mom, we like Uncle TRex, is he going to get up soon?”

“Mom, can I go outside and then come right back inside and then whine to go out again?”

“Mooooooooom, he’s still not awake! Can I go jump on his bed?”

“Mom? I’m thirsty.”

“Mom! Mom?”

“Hey, Mom? I think I hear Uncle TRex moving around in there. Woof! Woof-woof!”

When you first meet the poodles, it can be a bit hard to tell them apart, especially given that they leap and dance around like a family of acrobats on mescaline, flying into the air and careening off of each other, bouncing and wagging and sending furniture flying. Over time, however, their personalities become very clear.

Kobe is sort of the Derek Zoolander of the family. He poses and preens around in his ascot and smoking jacket (even though he doesn’t smoke!) and always tries to find the spot in the room with the most flattering light. Katie is more of a smoky, feminine Billie Holiday type. You can tell that if she had a choice, she would never leave the house without a single fresh white gardenia behind her ear.

Both of them are terribly aristocratic, accomplished, and refined.

Which makes Lucy all the more unaccountable in a way. She’s one of those girls who loves sports maybe a little too much. I kind of always picture her in a field hockey uniform with a whistle around her neck. She’s got spirit, in the kind of manic, too-intense way that these guys have spirit.

She wants you to throw the ball, and throw the ball, aaaaaand throw the ball. She never, ever, ever gets tired of you throwing that ball. All three dogs will run for it and sometimes Katie manages to get the ball first (because while not as athletic as Lucy, she is very wily), but generally it’s Lucy, Lucy, Lucy.

And while most visitors bond with the clever, flirtatious and charming Katie (and Kobe only has eyes for his ma)(well, and his reflection), Lucy and I really hit it off the best. She was always the first one up on my bed in the morning furiously wagging and giving me big, wet poodle kisses.

“Hi, Uncle TRex! Good morning! Hi!” *smooch*, “It’s me, Lucy! Hi! Hi! Hi, Uncle TRex! Are you awake?” *smooch*

Wag, wag, wag.

And writing this has made me really miss all three of them.

Give those puppehs some love from me, Jane!
