Tonight’s Friday Firedog is a very special young lady who is very near and dear to our hearts, Jane’s youngest daughter, Lucy.
Okay, well, technically, Lucy is really Kobe and Katie’s daughter, but I swear, when no one thought that I could hear, I heard all three poodles addressing Jane as “Mom”.
“Mom, we like Uncle TRex, is he going to get up soon?”
“Mom, can I go outside and then come right back inside and then whine to go out again?”
“Mooooooooom, he’s still not awake! Can I go jump on his bed?”
“Mom? I’m thirsty.”
“Mom! Mom?”
“Hey, Mom? I think I hear Uncle TRex moving around in there. Woof! Woof-woof!”
Katie (left) and Lucy discussing health care.
When you first meet the poodles, it can be a bit hard to tell them apart, especially given that they leap and dance around like a family of acrobats on mescaline, flying into the air and careening off of each other, bouncing and wagging and sending furniture flying. Over time, however, their personalities become very clear.
Kobe is sort of the Derek Zoolander of the family. He poses and preens around in his ascot and smoking jacket (even though he doesn’t smoke!) and always tries to find the spot in the room with the most flattering light. Katie is more of a smoky, feminine Billie Holiday type. You can tell that if she had a choice, she would never leave the house without a single fresh white gardenia behind her ear.
Both of them are terribly aristocratic, accomplished, and refined.
Which makes Lucy all the more unaccountable in a way. She’s one of those girls who loves sports maybe a little too much. I kind of always picture her in a field hockey uniform with a whistle around her neck. She’s got spirit, in the kind of manic, too-intense way that these guys have spirit.
She wants you to throw the ball, and throw the ball, aaaaaand throw the ball. She never, ever, ever gets tired of you throwing that ball. All three dogs will run for it and sometimes Katie manages to get the ball first (because while not as athletic as Lucy, she is very wily), but generally it’s Lucy, Lucy, Lucy.
And while most visitors bond with the clever, flirtatious and charming Katie (and Kobe only has eyes for his ma)(well, and his reflection), Lucy and I really hit it off the best. She was always the first one up on my bed in the morning furiously wagging and giving me big, wet poodle kisses.
“Hi, Uncle TRex! Good morning! Hi!” *smooch*, “It’s me, Lucy! Hi! Hi! Hi, Uncle TRex! Are you awake?” *smooch*
Wag, wag, wag.
And writing this has made me really miss all three of them.
Give those puppehs some love from me, Jane!

And these are very special ones.

Bored? job got ya down? Wondering if you have any kind of voice in this society? I’ve got you’re answer right here:

Cardboard, paint, and something to say people… that’s all it takes.
Iraq is George Bush’s War.
The next one belongs to all of us.
TRex, Lucy sounds like she’s tons of fun. No wonder you miss them all!
my computer is hella slow.
I see four dogs in the picture… who is the 4th?
do-si-do @ 13
Mine’s fast. But I’m not!
Back in the ’70’s when I first moved to Alaska there was a guy who insisted on trying to run the Iditarod race with a team of standard poodles.
The Iditarod is 1,049 mile dog sled race from Anchorage to Nome.
The winner gets eggs benedict at the finish line, because there’s no place like Nome for the hollandaise. The last part is not true, but the first part is.

The ‘Democrat’ Party owns a big part of it no matter what Kerry, The Hill, Fat Chuck and Ramit say.
Are dogs better than most humans on a day-to-day basis?
Say hi to old blighty for me, LL ;)
CTuttle @ 9
Ah, no, she has decided that this whole Internet thing is a waste of time and she’s going to abandon the blog and leave us all for the trolls to devour while she takes up underwater macrame.
Of course, she’s getting a new computer, silly! I think the question is what kind, how fast, and from where.
Loo Hoo. @ 12
yes, next question
BigMitch @ 16
How did the poodles do? I can’t imagine them dealing with that cold.
wangdangdoodle @ 15
and i was trying to stalk the zed. boo hoo! but I slipped ona bar of soap.
Suzanne @ 325
what to do with the soap
Kirk, I sure will!
katymine @ 14
That is Kobe and Katie’s son who was in the fist couple of seasons and then got his own spin-off series that was a big hit. I can’t think of his name right now. He used to make occasional cameo appearances, but I can’t remember the last time he came around.
do-si-do @ 17
laughing – sorry, shudda made sure you caught it before i headed upstairs
Hey Loo Hoo, jukebox, your turn.
do-si-do @ 25
tonight’s zed had to go to the Cubbies. I’ve been waiting a long time to have anything to celebrate on their behalf.
RevDeb @ 25
They never finished, but that doesn’t answer your question, because many great teams have failed to finish. Poodles are famously smart, and tough. Their traditional grooming relates to keeping the areas of their joints warm when they dive into water.
TRex @ 22
Dang, T, I only asked a simple question… In tribute to the Pooches…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..mp;search=
Do they make any computers in America still?
Yep, dogs love you unconditionally.
Miss Dog, my beagle buddy was my baby since the minute she was born as I was the midwife and owned her mother. Right now she is driving nuts playing nurse dog, following me around all day, snuggling in bed at night. I love her to death ….. never had a dog with so much personality.
She has one of those oval covered foam beds and half of a old flannel sheet. She has this dance where she noses under that sheet and wrap herself into a cocoon. Heaven forbid if you help her or laugh at her, makes her mad. It is quite entertaining.
Kathleen @ 17

BigMitch @ 31
I remember years ago at Block Island, RI, seeing a guy with what I thought was a “giant” poodle (heh, what did I know) which seemed to be jumping about 6 feet straight up in the air to catch a ball. He was not trimmed up in the standard cut, so he was one fluffy dog. I got tired just watching them go at it.
Congratulations to Cubs fans everywhere! It’s hard not to love them, even if one doesn’t live in Chicago…
Sincerely,
A Seattle Mariners Fan
Y’all here is so doggone dogged in yore search fur truth. You’ve legal beagles, those who shepherd new ideas and many who often go beyond the collie of duty …
Oh dear, has this blog gone to the dogs at last?

On topic!!!
I don’t think dogs have to worry, and it’s a fresh water thing, but this will ba an interesting global warming scare. I suppose the Cheney-Bush reaction will be a Global War On Ameobas (GLOAW). With lotsa private contractors and closed no-bid contracting.

6 die from brain-eating amoeba in lakes By CHRIS KAHN, Associated Press Writer
Fri Sep 28, 2:18 PM ET
PHOENIX – It sounds like science fiction but it’s true: A killer amoeba living in lakes enters the body through the nose and attacks the brain where it feeds until you die.
Even though encounters with the microscopic bug are extraordinarily rare, it’s killed six boys and young men this year. The spike in cases has health officials concerned, and they are predicting more cases in the future.
“This is definitely something we need to track,” said Michael Beach, a specialist in recreational waterborne illnesses for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“This is a heat-loving amoeba. As water temperatures go up, it does better,” Beach said. “In future decades, as temperatures rise, we’d expect to see more cases.”
According to the CDC, the amoeba called Naegleria fowleri (nuh-GLEER-ee-uh FOWL’-erh-eye) killed 23 people in the United States, from 1995 to 2004. This year health officials noticed a spike with six cases — three in Florida, two in Texas and one in Arizona. The CDC knows of only several hundred cases worldwide since its discovery in Australia in the 1960s.

Aw cute story…
Hmm… Looks like Huckabee is not totally nuts. He is a GOPer though, so it will probably be ignored. But note to Democrats -you can talk sense now on Iran without quaking in fear for the day the media machine attacks you for wanting hordes of Islamic terrorists to invade our country, take our women, and stab all the babies. I mean… a GOPer dared speak sense on on something.
Huckabee rips Bush’s foreign policy approach.Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) ripped into the President Bush’s national security record, “delivering a bold and potentially risky speech that could establish the former Arkansas governor as the maverick among top Republican candidates and test his party’s loyalty to President Bush.” Huckabee specifically rejected Bush’s approach to dealing with Iran:
“When we first invaded Afghanistan, Iran helped, especially in dealings with their ally, the Northern Alliance,” he said. “They wanted to join us in fighting al Qaida. …The CIA and State Department supported a partnership. Some in the White House and beyond did not. And when President Bush included Iran in the axis of evil, everything went downhill pretty fast.” […]
“The administration has quite properly said it will not take the military option off the table. But if we don’t put some other options on the table, eventually the military option becomes the only viable one. Right now we’re proceeding down only one track,” he said.

do-si-do @ 61

Jane is a proud Mac user and I’m sure she will decide accordingly. And Apple laptops are assembled here and in China and Singapore. Used to have a plant in Dublin, too.

thanks for the huckabee alert. yeah, he seems like the least personality disordered one in the bunch. Him and Ron Paul.
wangdangdoodle @ 71
Well, the song’s not really about a dog.
;>)
Re comment 67: It is frightening that Huckabee, speaking obvious commmon sense on US foreign policy, could be described as
“delivering a bold and potentially risky speech that could establish the former Arkansas governor as the maverick”
—————
The Very Serious political establishment and media in this country have become “both hilarious and disgusting” (an Alexander Hamilton phrase, and one of my favorties for recent US national politics). Also depraved. Also dangerous. And decadent. Also destined to both moral and practical failure in all ways. Has to be stopped. Think: what would Smedley Butler have done? (He would have raised Hell)

- How dare they call him General Betrayus! That ought to be against law! – Hit the Off Button.
- No, no, no! My mind is made up. – Hit the Off Button.
And on and on, ad infinitum.
It’s been said that pets are a reflection of their owner. All I hear about Jane’s poodles is that they are oh so intelligent and oh so good looking. That reflection thing seems to be right on target.

Kathleen @ 18From the link:
But that’s not all. The Christisons, who are basically apologists for Palestinian terrorists, argue that Wilkerson’s comment and Allen Greenspan’s war for oil comment are intended to silence anyone who would blame Israel for the war. Then they make this astounding contribution:
Of course, saying something just because it happens to be true, would never occur to the Christisons. And American supporters of Israel must be portrayed as being “fearful.” How’s about this idea: Israel didn’t fuck up. Bush did. All on his own.

Kathleen, I am leaving now. I am sure that I pissed off some people by responding to your drive-by bullshit. But when your crap goes unchallenged, people might think that there is a grain of truth to it. But it is all bullshit, and at such an unrelenting level with such total disregard to the truth, that your motivations are called into question.
Good bye lakers. Good luck in playoffs to everyone who has a dog in that fight. See, I brought it around to dogs, again.
In case you missed it, I wrote a very cool post today about General Peter Pace.
do-si-do @ 89
Right. Huckabee is clearly nuts in other ways. Maybe a crook too, but I have chosen to oppose him on other grounds, since there are so many crooks among the GOPers these days it is just too damn hard to keep track. I just wanted to note another instance of GOPer being able achieve sane insights on selected topics having the courage to communicate them to the public, while our brave leaders among establishment Dems do not.
Hagel, (who I think is neither nuts nor a crook, just a really too extreme conservative) won’t be around much longer to set that kind of example so Huckabee might have to do for now.
SnarKassandra @ 103
In Texas but not in AZ….. ;)
How are you feeling Katymine.

Anyone want to mow my back yard?
I have told 3 out of 4 of the kids, still have the oldest in Seattle to call.
Okay, here’s a great on-topic song about dogs with Neil Young and Waylon Jennings. New to me! See what the search engines can do for us?
If your yard was in Texas I would mow it Katymine! Maybe it can wait a few days?
{{{{Katymine}}}} I would gladly mow your lawn if I were anywhere near you.
TRex, great lift-the-spirits post after a looonnnngggg week.
How can i resist putting a quarter in the juke box for a one-hit-wonder, who let the dogs out.
Back when it was popular, my kids amused themselves by singing the chorus at our most talkative cat each time i let our old weak-bladdered dog out, as soon as they finished a line and paused, the cat would answer, “MA!” I got pretty tired of it, the kids & cat could keep it up waaayyyy too long.
yellowdog jim @ 117
well that was a bit before my time (although I was here, but just a kid) — I think I was born too late!

the problem is that Xeroscape reflects sunlight and makes the homes hotter. So it is either water or electricity and I since I pay around $25/mo for water and up to $400/mo in August, I pick cooler house.
I have a very well tuned sprinkler system and low water plants and lawn.
I’m now convinced that Canadians are just inherently smarter than Americans.
We’re having huge political brawls about newspaper ads and Senators soliciting sex in airports. Canadians are having a huge political brawl about what to do with an unexpected $14 billion budget surplus–pay down the national debt or reduce taxes.

Hard to say. Hotel conference rooms in Vancouver aren’t noticeably different frorm hotel conference rooms anywhere else. Thinking about blowing off the last session on Saturday afternoon and getting out to explore a bit.

CTuttle @ 180
Can anyone explain why American troops are not there, smashing the military government? These people are literally dying for democracy. And our troops are where? For the love of whatever, we should be helping the people who want our help.
Heartbreaking stuff on Bill Moyers tonight. A soldier who died in Iraq who had just recently got his citizenship. I believe he was one of the soldiers who wrote that article for the NYT.

maybe there should be two congresses….one to condemn sh*t full time, and one to, like, pass a freakin’ law every now and then.
Hi gang…I have the spirit of my Maxie who could
easily belong to Jane’s pups… he also loved running on the beach. All poodles, large or small can live easily together. My Max even was vrey friendly with cats…loved them all.
Now..to make many people happy…the Red Sox won the American League East tonight by defeating Minneapolis..Baltimore won and beat the Yankee’s 10-9 in 10 of 11 innings. Much fun from Fenway tonight and all are thrilled. They have two games this weekend to end the season
and they are hoping to win both games….although it will not change
the outcome…..The Sox are planning to win the next 11 games and take
the world series. I am sure there was a hot time in Bean town tonight. Check tomorrow’s papers for all the most uptodate news…..
Beantown was realtively quiet tonight….GO SOX !!

Very, very, incredible stuff he’s doing with that acoustic git. SO grounded in the first gen blues artists style in much of his git work there, I could hear Robert Johnson listening in from The Crossroads . . . astounding.
A great share, thanks to YDJim for posting it.
Time for a change of threads.
Ok- 10pm Phoenix news
U-Haul center not far from my house….. rental truck came back & called the sheriff about what was in the back of the truck. Very suspicious and might be terrorist related. No bombs, explosives BUT just papers.
THE FBI says it is NOT related to terrorists….Is not even investigating it…. sure sounds like a Sheriff Joe publicity stunt.
Woman trapped in CT scanner for 5 hours. She escaped the machine and called her son on her cell phone then 911. Oh this was in Tucson.

I hear ya.
President Bush criticized Democrats today for wanting to put more power in the hands of government! Who knew?
Of course, he was talking about SCHIP, not the war in Iraq, or giving government agents the right to ignore FISA, or granting amnesty to members of the government and their buddies in business who violate the Constitutional protections to privacy, etc. etc.

All that GREAT R&B stuff . . . they just NAILED it . . . now and then, I go UTubin just to see them old clips, and to remind myself just how MF’ing Sweet Tea Good they were . . . . (kerplunk).
Um, is anyone gonna empty the quarter jar, it’s kinda full . . . *G*
TexBetsy @ 243
This defies ANY attempt at ‘moving forward’ . . . god help them all, each and every victim.
