Judge orders Murtha to testify

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge refused Friday to dismiss a defamation case against Rep. John P. Murtha and ordered the Pennsylvania Democrat to give a sworn deposition in the case. A Marine Corps sergeant is suing the 18-term congressman for alleging ”cold-blooded murder and war crimes” by unnamed soldiers in connection with the deaths of Iraqi civilians in the town of Haditha.

Today Chairman Waxman wrote to State Department Inspector General Howard Krongard regarding reports that senior staff attempted to coerce employees not to cooperate with the Committee’s inquiry and threatened their jobs and careers.
Text of the letter follows:
Dear Mr. Krongard:
I am writing to you about an exceptionally serious matter: reports that your senior staff has threatened officials that you could fire them if they cooperate with the Committee’s investigation into your conduct.
Ok everyone, time for me to split. Carry on, pups, and thank you for all that you do. Keep on fighting and pushing back in your own way. See you all on or around Oct 8!

Something not right here. There are good reasons for declaring this war illegal. Maybe even for refusing to fight. But fear shouldn’t be one of them. That the VA abandoned gul war vets is dispicable, but not a reason for GIs to refuse their orders.

TexBetsy, thank you.
Such an irony – the power and inspiration of Christ’s teachings may yet defeat the fundie neo-cons’ war.
One simple teacher – defeating the deluded fundamentalists of three desert faiths.
What a wonderful liberation from five millenia of war for one of three jealous deities.
Let the monotheistic gods fight it out in heaven – our mortal blood is too precious to pour on the sterile altars of patriarchy and absolute rule – no matter what shape the house of worship.
No matter what tongue reads the sacred texts.
May the fundies of each of the three selfish Gods take their intolerant, murderous, absolutist political doctrines back to their congregations – and out of our health care, foreign affairs, marriages, and child-rearing.
Out of our Republic’s mundane affairs.
No more mortal tombstones for the deathless deities – or the profane mindless wars we are told to pursue in mockery of their names.
No more murders for ideology – religious or economic.
No more killing for the tissue of lies power pulps out of genuine faith and divinity.
No more murders for the three jealous Gods.
Let them slit one another’s throats – not ours.
Bless Catholic Worker, Jonah House, and Dororthy Day for fraying the yoke between our criminally insane leaders and the armed force they willingly send against civilians.
As we saw in Burma, a mutinous army standing with a free people saves lives.
And only those who identify with absolute power stand to lose.
Let them.
Five thousand years of theocratic rule is five thousand years too many.
May Christ the gentle revolutionary help to overthrow the abattoirs the fundies of all three monothesitic Gods have erected in our public live – and national values.
Bless Jonah House, Catholic Worker, and Dorothy Day.
US troops’ open dissent and covert non-cooperation with our murderous war upon the Iraqi people will save many lives.
Their commander-in-chief and their most senior officers have cynically abandoned them to die for no discernable tactical objective – merely for political cover.
Their senior officers’ illegal orders demand defiance – not obedience – under the UCMJ and the Nuremberg trials.
Every bombing mission cancelled, every deployment deferred is another opportunity in furtherance of life and the Republic.
In a democracy, soldiers’ highest duty is to defend our liberty and freedom – most of all when that requires them to defy their commanders.
For in those times – our time – their commander is a tyrant.
Hope the message of defiance to Bush’s illegal and morally abhorrent orders to further prosecute America’s criminal war against Iraq’s civilians spreads far and wide.
The sooner US troops defy the generals, the sooner they can come home.
Mutiny for democracy.
Mutiny for America.
Defy the Generals – save the Republic.
End George Bush’s insane war before it destroys the Republic and the Constitution our officers swore to uphold.
Support the troops – against the Generals and the Boy King.
Support their defiance of this illegal war and our deranged, impaired, delusional President.
Mutiny for democracy!
It’s not so much the stall doors as it is the dividers between the stalls. The new longer ones have to be bolted to the walls and floors, so it’s a complete remodel/installation of the stalls.
It’s stupid, but uptight people think that’s better than paying minimum wage to a bathroom attendant, which would also solve the problem.

Well, it depends on how they’re going to do it, doesn’t it? I’m a bit of a contrarian, myself, with respect to the nuclear power issue. If we could solve the problem of what to do with the radioactive waste, nuclear energy is a great idea!
One of the problems is that people have no idea of how to consistently evaluate risk. Some people go on and on about the risk of nuclear waste at Yucca Flats, and of transporting nuclear waste there, and then every day indulge in much more dangerous risk behaviors without a second thought. In other words, I think discussions about nuclear waste tend to border on the irrational.
What is it that you find most objectionable about nuclear power generation? (This is not a rhetorical question, nor is it a “trick” question.)

Bob in HI:
I agree that we are crazy to take nuclear power generation off the table. But there are risks, that must be evaluated rationally.
Of course, one risk is a decreased dependence on Alaskan oil. Hard to evaluate that one at PFD time.
(PFD= Permanent Fund Dividend, the money paid to each Alaskan annually representing a dividend on a fund created from oil money when the Trans Alaska Pipeline went in.)

We COULD shoot it into space, but gravity being what it is and all, it may haunt us or future gen’s in a BAD way.
But into the sun? What harm there?
Sheesh. I take the time to compose a post (I’m slow, I guess), and almost everybody leaves before I can send it out!

Thanks for posting on the Mayanmar/Burma issue. I was hearing on the news tonight that the biggest difference between this incident and the last big flare-up years ago is that world coverage of the situation in Burma is harder to keep out than it was before, and that is having an effect, and encouraging the forces of resistance, but I’m not sure how.
Bob in HI
bobschacht @ 167
This has been looked at pretty hard. Setting aside the catastrophic consequences of a launch-pad incident, the energy necessary to get it to fly to the sun would require a few slingshot maneuvers. Have to track it for a long time.

Or a massive growth industry it put it good use. Beats me what you could do with it but that waste still has a ton (har, har) of energy potential.

oddmommy @ 192
I thought this from Scarecrow’s posting was a bit off:
IMHO, Hillary is neither “reckless” nor “foolish.” I’m sure she cast that vote in favor of Kyl-Lieberman for very practical reasons. One obvious possible reason is that a large fraction of her financial backing is from people with a strong interest in preserving Israel’s nuclear monopoly in the middle east. (For some of the details google on Hillary and Saban.)
Rep Hall (NY) should read scarecrow’s post on free speech.
twȝk @ 210
Doesn’t Hall get it that by doing this he is treating MoveOn and Limbaugh as moral peers? Every sane person on the left has been insisting that an ad in the NYT is not worth congress’s time. The same goes for Limbaugh’s blather.
twȝk @ 210
lol, as i told rep hall in the comments… after quoting most of scarecrow’s post – i hope scarecrow doesn’t mind!
oh, and good morning!
wigwam @ 211
Doesn’t look like he does get. Looks more like he is trying to parlay condemning free speech into free media time.
morning selise!
twȝk @ 214
may i impose on you again? saved the error msg i got when trying to compile cocoajt…
Good morning everyone.
Mornin’ all!
twȝk @ 210
Hall’s an asshole for putting this diary up. On the survey that Jane recently had up I voted for him to come an explain his MoveOn vote. Now I would say just cut him off.
Republicans vote for more war Blue Dog Democrats do the same they think we can win and they are entitled to their opinion,….provided they back it up by preparing for the consequences if we loose.
There are 2.2 million Iraqi refugees living in other countries http://news.independent.co.uk/…..640418.ece
Now then I wonder if the GOPers and the Blue dogs are willing to volunteer their states and the neighborhoods they live in to accept oh lets say 1 million of them.
Just the ones who cooperated with us and their families, and their families family.
I’m sure the Government can claim Eminent Domain on a Porsche Dealership in Mitch McConnel’s neighborhood or Trent Lott’s. Knock it down and put in a few hundred person apartment buildings for the Refugees right in front of Trents house.
Those responsible must feel the consequences of their actions. Their voters must be made to understand the middle class and the poor are not going to pay for failure this time, they will.
Good morning, pups. Today in the NYT we have TOMC typing some stuff about Hillary and Bob Herbert writing about a trend in policing.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got waffles with Vermont maple syrup to share. Have a lovely Saturday.

“Citizen journalists” that’s like us, isn’t it.
Morning all! The pollen is high and I’m beginning another day of sneezing (with medication and a steroid shot, I’m still almost immobilized). Yep, I want to go back to NZ. The husband is flying here in two weeks for his first visit back in two and a half years. We are betwixt and between about where to live after the son goes to college next fall.
Hey egregious! How are things going for you these days?
FDIC Shuts Down NetBank Due to Defaults
It was the largest savings and loan failure since the tail end of the industry’s crisis more than 14 years ago. Federal regulators appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. as a receiver for Alpharetta, Ga.-based NetBank.
Customers with less than $100,000 deposited with NetBank will be protected by FDIC insurance.
NZ Expat, now in KS @ 225
Hey NZ, good to see you! I’m in California for a conference, details at 1am :)
Child dies of toothache because he did not have healthcare. Now Bush talks about being a Compassionate Conservative and Jesus being his favorite Philosoher.
Now doesn’t Jesus say something about the last shall be first and the first shall be last? Maybe Bush and Congress could set an example for the rest of the country and deny themselves dental care until the rest of the nation has a check up.
I know SOCIALIZED MEDICINE! But tell me just what did George think Jesus meant when he said a Rich man has as much chance of getting into heaven as a Camel has of going through the eye of a needle?
Tell me how can we be both a Christian Nation and a Capitalist one? After all a man cannot serve two masters God and money.
Jesus says sell all that you have and give it to the poor and you will have treasure in Heaven. Then come follow me.
Many will come in my name saying I am Jesus and mislead the people.
Bush is a misleader. Now then what did Elijah do to all the false prophets of Baal when they couldn’t light the fire?

Ted Stevens’ $84 million ‘ferry to nowhere.’
So any Lawyers here today maybe somebody can explain to me why Carlos Arredondo’s attackers the Gathering of Eagles guys who beat him up were not arrested? Didn’t the police stop the beating? Then they know who did it. So do rightwingers get a pass or what?
They can’t all claim that they were so moved to attack one defensless guy. I get into a fight its me I don’t ask my friends for help of course I don’t beat up people for disagreeing with me. This was a mob attack designed to scare us.
Pull up a Chair upstairs…

Didn’t the Aryan Nation have to file bankrupcy after there people attacked someone?
http://www.apologeticsindex.org/a83.html
Didn’t the Klan file for bankrupcy too? http://query.nytimes.com/gst/f…..ence/Times Topics/Organizations/K/Ku Klux Klan If we can find GOP ties to these groups we can go after them too!
BigMitch @ 59
Let me guess, most of those states are represented by Republican senators.
TexBetsy @ 93
Good to know they now recognize Edwards as the Dem front-runner. Polling has shown for a long time now that he’s the only Dem who can beat any of the Repub candidate and has consistently done so over many months now.
To Republicans who wanted the soft Hillary to face…Tough!
