It was a sad moment in journalism when MSNBC forced David Shuster to apologize to the odious Marcia Blackburn because a highly unreliable group of right wing bloggers claimed that the soldier Shuster asked her about in the YouTube above was not actually from her district.
You’d think after Jamail Hussein and other episodes too numerous to mention without overloading our servers that any fool would know the wrong-o-sphere is always wrong, but I guess not. Via InstaPutz:
Shuster’s apology [re: Marsha Blackburn] may have been premature. The tiny hamlet of Bon Aqua, Tenn., is where Bohannon lived in the months immediately prior to entering the Army. The Census Bureau places his home in Blackburn’s 7 th Congressional District.
He lived in Bon Aqua for “close to a year” immediately prior to entering the Army, said Tonya Taylor, 35, who permitted him to stay at her house while Bohannon was dating her daughter.
Bohannon grew up, was home-schooled and was buried in McEwan, which is clearly in the 8th Congressional District of U.S. Rep. John Tanner, D-Tenn. But his last legal address was in Blackburn’s district.
Media Bistro makes an excellent point:
Are we missing the point here? Conservatives are arguing that Shuster pulled a fast one on Blackburn and would not do the same to a Democrat. No one knows the answer to that hypothetical. But what we do know is this: Whether or not Bohannon is or isn’t from Blackburn’s district, the fact remains that Blackburn failed to recall the name of the last person to die in Iraq from her district. Big Bad Liberal Media conspiracies aside, Blackburn failed that basic test.
This is what happened to Dan Rather — the GOP comes up with something that is wholly beside the point with regard to the main story (Blackburn couldn’t name the last soldier to die from her district, no matter who it was), floats some disinformation through the right wing blogosphere and then uses that as a source to please the foaming GOP and force the network to humiliate the journalist who dared to challenge them.
David Shuster is one of the best journalists MSNBC has. He’s done excellent work on the Libby trial and other stories and deserves his own show along side Olbermann. No wonder the GOP is willing to use their mindless tools in the wrong-o-sphere to shut him down.
Dan Abrams should publicly apologize to Shuster for being at the helm of this fiasco before the facts had a chance to be ascertained (you know, Dan, journalism and all). Having your journalists hit their knees at the behest of a self-serving politician is not the stuff of Edward R. Murow.
Abrams should give Shuster his 9pm slot in atonement. The world would be a better place.

hola!
I didn’t know Shuster was forced to apologize! Wow. Shustergate.
OT: emptywheel is speaking now at a conference at Duke. Webcast at: http://www.law.duke.edu/webcast/
He wasna so much a man as–a blancmange!
Morning, Jane…
Dan, stick to O.J.
Does anyone know whether Dan Abrams ever forced Tucker Carlson to apologize for bragging about gay bashing?
holleahock @ 4
Thanks. I’m watching now.
I thought Dan Abrams’ boss-days were over.
maybe Dan can see the possibility of Shuster taking over Abrams’ time slot?
Our side really needs to get it:
The other side is a bunch of cry-babies. Call them cry-babies. They are whiners.
You want to make a principled argument against disrespecting military folk? Then you condemn attacks on Max Cleland.
Otherwise, quit whining and STFU.
Why are the Republicans such victims?
Did Dan Abrams force David Shuster to apologize–or is it Phil Griffin? Abrams is no longer general manager of MSNBC. Earlier this week he opted to make his 9 PM ET show permanent. Phil has assumed Dan’s managerial duties for now.
DAbrams@msnbc.com
Not sure if anyone is aware yet but occams hatchet has a diary up over at DailyKos:
Broken! Repubs abandon CA electoral theft? (Update 2)
According to both updates, it looks like their ‘dirty tricks’ just got white-washed. WOOHOO!!
Hi, Jane. I am no big fan of empty suit and legacy boy Dan Abrams either but wonder if we know whether he was still in charge when Shuster was forced to apologize. (It was announced Abrams is relinquishing the management post.) I’d like to know more about the new guy, Phil Griffin, too.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..01490.html
Biodun, you beat me to it. My thoughts too.
Biodun @ 12
If that’s true, I’d double-check. So hold off on the email to Dan. I would imagine then you’d want to email Phil. His email is more than likely PGriffin@msnbc.com
Because the wingnuts scored here by getting the forced apology, I’m expecting GOP senators to introduce early next week a bill condemning Shuster for his attack on our troops, and then a number of stupid Democrats will vote for it.
This is how it always go, The Mighty Wurlitzer wheezes out some fake outrage and if it gains any traction it gets pushed and escalated until it becomes the story and everyone forgets the real issue. Doesn’t the Democratic Party have anyone who understands these media tactics from the right? They’ve only been honing them for the last twenty or so years.
Further to my 12:
ccmask @ 9
yeah, thanks!
Dan Rather’s complaint states that there was pressure from the Administration. I’m sure this is exactly the same case, however, I just wonder “how” they are being threatened, and with what. If it was a mistake, it was a mistake. It still does not change the fact that Blackburn could not answer the question in the first place. That was the point…not whether Shuster knew the name or not. Blackburn should apologize to her constituents for not knowing.
Correx to my comments above:
My bad. Abrams will relinquish his managerial position in mid-October when MSNBC completes its move from Secaucus, NJ to 30 Rockfeller Plaza.
They might send Shuster to cover life in Fallujah.
It was Abrams.
Dan Abrams is a tool. David Shuster should have that show. I agree that Abrams pressured Shuster to make him look weak. But it’s MSNBC that’s weak. Free David Shuster!!!Apologize, Abrams!!
Biodun @ 12
I also wondered about this. My take was that Dan wanted to take over the timeslot permanently, even though he would have to give up his management duties to do it. He had already pretty much been leaving stuff to Phil Griffin, so who really did make the decision and is this fact or supposition?
I would like to see Schuster take over Tucker’s timeslot and Tucker put out to pasture. Could come to pass, since I understand his ratings are low, very low. Here’s hoping!
Jane Hamsher @ 23
You’re right, Jane. (See my 21…*g*)
Jane Hamsher @ 23
Right.
Jane,
spell check? sphere?
Good Morning Jane!
thanks.
Blackburn did not know the name of the last soldier to die in her district. That is the bottom line.
Well then, Biodun, I say email them both then.
Wait a minute. Shuster had to apologize because he didn’t know the answer to the question that Blackburn didn’t know the answer to?
Biodun @ 12
Twas a GE lackey regardless.
Don’t want to offend any rightard wingnut who could ever possibly be a potential customer for any GE armaments.
I wonder. Did Shuster do the investigating into the name itself prior to the “incident” or did someone else do it? Did a producer vet it and check sources before air time?? Who might that be? In any case, Blackburn didn’t know the answer.
Great post Jane. We probably need to contact both Abrams and Griffin. Anyone know how to contact Griffin?
Wow. I didn’t realize they forced Shuster to apologize… and how do I know that the apology will be trumpeted, yet the clarification that the soldier was from her district will not get much attention?
And, of course it does put the entire POINT aside. Just like the Betrayus thing. The rightwingers find something to “get the vapors” about (h/t to Digby – I love that phrase) which gets people riled up about an insult, getting attention diverted away from the FACTS. Blackburn isn’t really worried about supporting the actual troops – she’s worried about supporting the war machine.
The first day I really laughed hard at Abrams was when the Supreme Court ruled in the 2000 Presidential election case. I was watching MSNBC, and Abrams ran with the summary to get to his staging place. When he got set to read it, he was so out of breath, I thought he was gonna fall down. Then, he wasn’t able to quickly scan it to summarize what the SC ruled – so he just breathlessly babbled, flipping through pages, obviously wanting to be the first to deliver the news, but having no idea what it was. I was on the edge of my seat, wondering what was happening with our democracy, and this moron was so worried about being FIRST that he actually couldn’t speak and had no idea what to say. That moment crystalized the 24 hour news network competition to me – they’d rather be “first” than “accurate”. They’d rather be able to say that they were the first news org to tell you nothing of substance, rather than taking 1 minute to fully understand the depth of the news and report it coherently. I’ve hated Dan Abrams ever since then. (Though I must admit I’ve been happy to see him give Olbermann a very long leash – but that’s likely due to ratings success).
Biodun @ 21
Hope they have good plumbing *g

Jane Hamsher @ 23
Since Jane found a reference that Abrams is the guy, it seems the easiest, most noticible way to get their attention is to boycott his new show to hopefully affect his ratings, and to write to his advertisers and sponsors. He left himself vulnerable when he gave up his management duties to be an on-air personality again. Another case of poor judgment’ rewards.
Why is it that the media jumps 50 feet into the air whenever there is a somewhat coordinated effort by the rightwingers to call them out? The wingnuts throw out some criticism, the media doesn’t bother to fact check it but instead responds to it with huge, dramatic “mea culpa” moments.
Yet, they don’t seem to do the same thing when presented with complaints based on FACTS from the liberals.
What does it say about the media? That the meme “liberal media” has firmly taken hold, so they bristle at the first suggestion of leftwing bias? That their corporate owners are bending over backward for the GOP – or that they are simply using the media to present and promote conservative ideas and memes?
What does that say about the rightwingers, and what does it say about us? Do we need to be more coordinated and more vocal when we challenge the media on bias, on false or misleading reporting?
Time for me to run. Have a good day, everyone.
Ann in AZ @ 44
I simply cannot sit thru an Abrams show. To me, he’s just a half-step above Tucker. Anyone who would give the license that Abrams has given Tucker, can only be a media/administration tool. Sorry.
And do we need to ask where’s the outrage over Rush calling anti war veterans “phony soldiers”?
i’m choking on the hypocrisy.
I did slip a copy of Stephen Colbert’s WH Correspondents Dinner speech to a young friend taking civics to illustrate the need for a free press in a real democracy.
Marcia marcia marcia, so sorry we stuck it to you with the wrong name even though we were right and you are wrong, thoughtless, and above all we should care more about your little hurt feelings than about the dead soldiers. All better?
rwcole @ 40
My thoughts too. such bad acting.
rwcole @ 40
And he’s an attention hog. I knew he wouldn’t stay off camera for long. He wants to show his smarmy face, and when Scarborough went to the morning slot, he wanted to make sure that a more conservative person took the slot next to Olbermann. Tucker won’t last that much longer – his show is so bad, I don’t see him hanging on past his contract.
nolo @ 39

twȝk @ 43
Oh, sorry to repeat what you said!
Terre @ 13
I’m suspicious though. Could be a litte rovian ploy to get the opposition to let up.
Since Jane found a reference that Abrams is the guy, it seems the easiest, most noticible way to get their attention is to boycott his new show
Way ahead of ya on that one. heh.
I even make sure the DVR isn’t still on MSNBC when I go for the evenin’ bike ride so that Tucker won’t pick up any ratings…
Not to excuse Dan Abrams. His politics is usually clear, although muddled sometimes. And the son of Floyd Abrams can’t be that bad. Here’s what he said on his show yesterday:
(BTW, I already sent him and Griffin emails…)
Just tell Abrams the truth: he can’t hold Olbermann’s audience any more than Joe Scar could hold it.
Then ask him what blackmail photos Tuckery has on him to keep a show with his abysmal ratings. Or ask if there’s some new law that requires cable news channels to maintain at least one low rated show for obscure right wing hacks like Tuckery (and Glenn Beck)
jayt @ 53
now that’s diligence!
I should have known Jane had it right. I don’t have high hopes for Phil Griffin being any different, though. He has been around MSNBC a long time and apparently considers his hiring of Scarborough a great touch of genius.
“We took a guy that was pretty raw and took a risk with him,” Griffin says. “I tweak him all the time: ‘Don’t try to be like everybody else.’ Cable demands a certain rawness in who you are. We don’t want formality. . . . He’s comfortable talking about everything from Shiites to Paris Hilton.”
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..83_pf.html
Marcia Blackburn is like a Stepford Wife.
OT: but Help Save the Intert00bz!
I didn’t see it as apologizing to Blackburn but to the audience for getting a fact wrong
something more of them should be required to do
for example Tucker Carlson’s factless drivel
he is rarely correct.
dan abrams is an oj re enactor –and like Tucker and Shrub a member of the lucky sperm club
OTOH, Tucker is egregiously bad. (Sorry, egregious.) The only reason I watch him is for billables.
nolo @ 39
Nolo, thanks for the breaking!!!
Looks like Henry has caught himself a whopper!
‘Course with the criminals currently in charge of this country’s law enforcement, we might have to wait until 2009 to prosecute.

Though I think he’s doing very nicely where he is. I <3 all the work he’s been plodding through. It’s not glamorous, it’s not superstardom in front of a camera, but it’s sure lining up the ducks (even if no one’s there shooting *grr*)
I don’t think a lot of GOP or Dem representatives know the names of all the kids from their districts who get killed in Iraq. I know that Don Young, up until March 2007, had never visited a wounded Alaska soldier in any of the local DC hospitals. He probably still hasn’t.
It is sometimes confusing where these soldiers actually regard their residence to be at the time of their death. In Alaska, we have the highest per capita Vet population, the highest percentage currently serving, four large bases with contingents in Iraq and Afghanistan, and various NG units in and out of the ME. When soldiers _based_ here perish, they’re treated by many here as “our own,” but they mostly end up getting buried where they grew up, even if they had intended to stay in Alaska, had they been able to live on. This is also true elsewhere.
When I was 19 through 23, I moved around a lot, not finally “settling down”
ever, uh, until I was almost 30.And here’s a little something on Phil Griffin:
Nolo, et al–It looks as if Krongard’s got other problems as well. Another typical Bush appointee.

AT&T and Verizon. Two altruistic companies, not.
I’d haven to start watching Abrams in order to boycott him- and that’s too high a price to pay.. I have no idea what his politics are- nor do I care. He’s in the same league as
“RITA”
LS @ 30
That’s true, and watching the video it’s clear that she doesn’t much care. She mouths the words about “working closely with the families” but she obviously doesn’t care and probably doesn’t know what her staff is doing to “keep in close touch.” She came on the program to bash MoveOn and didn’t expect to have to know any thing but her memorized talking points.
I haven’t followed the details on this. Why did David Schuster think that Jeremy Bohannon lived in Bon Aqua? If Bohannon put that down as his address then obviously he felt he lived there, and surely he should be allowed to chose his home address without congressional interference.
Furthermore what kind of scumbag demands an apology for not knowing what it is her business to know: at least a little bit about the fallen?
The name of any fallen soldier from her congressional district?
Or a hometown?
Or a branch of service?
Or the number of dead and wounded from her state?
Blackburn didn’t know any of this or she would have fired that info back at Schuster.
So…
we have a scumbag Republican congresscritter and a lick spittle TV network general manager.
Nothing new under the sun.

It’s been getting more attention in the last week or so. I think that that may be part of their problem: it wasn’t under the radar any more.
(I suggested that opponents simply tell people its main backer was a TX Republican, and watch the support vanish.)
OT re Burma
What I found to be the true beauty of the Shuster/Blackburn exchange was that after the question was asked by Shuster, Blackburn had no response — not even a wrong answer. Could she not know the name of any member of her district killed? Had I been in her seat I would have given a name of any soldier killed even if it wasn’t the last one to die.
Shuster is one of the very best of the best.
Here’s a little more, via Greg Sargeant;
” But I’d also like to highlight another Rush quote from the same radio episode that I think is equally telling and reprehensible:
“What is the imperative in pulling out? What’s in it for the United States to pull out? I don’t think they have an answer for that, other than, `It’s gonna bring our troops home. Save the troops. Keep the troops safe. Or whatever. It’s not possible intellectually to follow these people.”
“Whatever?”(author’s emphasis)
Can you say Silvia’s Restaurant?
I believe that MSNBC/NBC also shit-canned the ever-delightful Ashleigh Banfield for being ever-so-right about Mess O’Potamia and saying so when no one else would. I think she lived in the wilderness (literally) for several years before finally being hired by Court TV, where she is, I think, now an “anchor” of some sort.
A David and Ashleigh Hour of TV journalism might be a great follow-on to Countdown, and would certainly be a ratings boost to an otherwise anemic (except for Countdown) lineup of shows. (Come on, Tucker? Really?)
As for the Shuster-Blackburn tussle, all I have to say is “Bravo Zulu” David…Never Give Up, Never Surrender. The GOopers can’t win elections, so they take their victories where they can, by fear and intimidation. Hmmmm…sounds like Germany in the ’30s. (Oooh Godwin’s Law Godwin’s Law, he called them a bunch of Nazis). The truth hurts, doesn’t it?

kirk murphy @ 84
That’s horrible, and also strange to see it almost “live-blogged”, if you will. Where did you find the link?
Whoever was the last fatality buried in her district should have been memorable.
Remembered enough to have hand written his/her loved ones a note of condolence. This isn’t a task to delegate to the intern with the form letters and the auto-pen. Shame on the Congresswoman.
Elliott @ 90
Scary times. You knew it was bad when ASEAN came out and condemned the actions strongly the other day and that was before things got so violent.
PeteCO @ 87
Well I do agree that it would be difficult for Rush’s intellect to grasp anything intelligent and so subtle as the desire to preserve life.
Hi PeteCO – the link is in the datestamp (not sure if that’s your question)…
Found the site from either global voices or ko-hitke (h/t to firepup smalpi for the latter linky).
Also good updated news at irawaddy (and this page there).
With these links you’ll be way ahead of NPR’s reporter (from Thailand) this AM…

Perhaps Shuster can apologize the Republican way a la tony snow;
a wave of the hand and “done”.
Shuster, action suggestions to support him, anyone?

I’ll be back for my answer. Work calls.
Re: Mush Dim-Bulb a/k/a Rush Limbaugh.
Just called my Congresswoman (Pryce R-OH) and asked her to bring a resolution to the House floor condemning Limbaugh for calling anti-war vets “phony soldiers.”
Will call Senators Brown and Voinovich after lunch.
Also called the business office of the local talk radio station that airs Limbaugh, and told them that Mr. Limbaugh should have to issue an apology to all vets.
BlueStateRedHead @ 103
dan.abrams@msnbc.com
OT, FDL offers “Spotlight” which allows you to forward Jane’s post to Abrams and others in the media.
Just spotlighted the post to a slew of people at MSNBC, including Mr. Abrams.
And to end my comments I told them that Schuster should have the slot after Countdown, because he’s a better reporter…
Boo Radley @ 105
thanks. I tried the Spotlight and the site refuses to preview my comment, that as it says I “really” posted. Anyone know a way around the obstacle.
Thanks for email. will write.
Too late. They never correct corrections. Never. I think the fabric of time-space would be rent if that were to ever happen.
On the other hand, if that’s the best they could get on Schuster, that the kid grew up elsewhere, that’s pretty damn lame. But did anyone really expect differently from Dan Abrams? Come on. He’s the type of guy who yells “How high?” BEFORE being told to jump.
The only thing that can be done is to have Olbermann bring it up during one of Schuster’s appearances, and allow Schuster to clear the air.
I’m thinking that probably won’t happen.
Oh, and someone should find out, since he was 18, if he was registered to vote, perhaps when he joined the armed services. That would answer the question as to whether she was his rep.
Brisingamen @ 104
I think we all agree that Limbaugh needs to apologize, even if we don’t agree on the action Congress should take, if any.
To the Vets, and to the Bill of Rights.
Thanks, for this is a wonderful model to follow to make it happen. It would be especially valuable if the vets or military family’s among us were to do so, IMOP.
BlueStateRedHead @ 107
My guess is that when you see “Preview,” scroll down. It requires you to input some info, name, address, phone, but it is below “Preview.” Once you’ve input that data, click on “Preview.”
BlueStateRedHead @111 – the only reason I called my Rep is that she voted to condemn Move-On.
If the folks in the Capitol are dumb enough to go on the record to condemn Move-On for insulting our troops, then they damn well better condemn ANYONE who does so.
I don’t know if they’ll listen, but I feel have to make the phonecalls.
Brisingamen @ 113
I am betwixt and between on the condemning part. But I agree on the call the local station.
Especially since in my market as the Rush station has become our local baseball team’s radio station and the baseball teams’ ownership is pretty blue-ish.
(OT, does anyone remember the Beatles’ Yellow submarine movie, “blueish, you don’t look blueish.” Jane, if you are reading, can we appropriate that one for our candidates in someway?)
Boo Radley @ 112
Wrote the following to Abrams:
There are good factual reasons to consider the soldier to have been from Blackburn’s district.
I know you have been sent the FDL rebuttal through the Spotlight project, so I wont burden your email inbox with the proof.
Henceforth, please double check your sources esp. when the sources are the right wing wrong-o-sphere.
com’on, help me keep my faith in MSNBC as the only TV news that is still news. go right your wrong.
You can also go to the show’s page, and submit via the “Beat the Press” area for that segment on his show.
Seems Appropriate!

And this back up Schuster. Look at the DoD release on his death. It shows the Blackburn District address:
http://www.defenselink.mil/rel…..seid=11215
So long, David, it was nice knowin’ ya. Put another notch on the pistol grip, boys.
That was just dumb. Why would a representative remember the name of the last soldier from Iraq, how about a soldier that died in Afghanistan, or on a training mission in Texas. Shuster just showed complete and utter bias.
What if a plane full of soldiers from that district had just died in Afghanistan – should we end the fight there??
