How badly are Republicans sweating the threatened Presidential veto of SCHIP when they send Sen. Orrin Hatch out to call bullshit flipping nonsense on the Bush Administration false claims about the legislation? From the WaPo:
Backers of the congressional bill, including conservative Republican Sens. Orrin G. Hatch (Utah) and Charles E. Grassley (Iowa), have said repeatedly that Bush is dead wrong about the $83,000 figure. Only New York has sought to cover children from families with incomes that high, and the administration turned down the request.
But both sides have dug in. Moderate Republicans openly fretted yesterday that the White House had made the House GOP its firewall, to their political detriment. “I’m a little baffled as to why the Bush people picked this issue to fight it out on,” said Rep. Ray LaHood (Ill.). “It’s very sensitive. It’s about kids. Who’s against kids’ health care?”
According to the vote in the House, a whole lot of Republicans – that’s who’s against kids’ health care. How’s that for a campaign visual going into 2008, and one that they are doing to themselves by continuing to take WH marching orders instead of thinking about the needs of their constituents.
I’m with PW — bring it up for a vote and then smack them upside the head with it until it knocks some sense into them. President Large Ego can drag all his pals along for the joy ride right out of office — or they can support health care for children (PDF) that makes both ethical and fiscal sense.

Morning!
Christy!
Of course, given the Democrats’ complete inability to turn any political situation to their advantage, they will probably allow this bill to die a quet death — or give House and Senat Repubs an honorable out. Dumba$$es.
Gee, if the shub’ites can’t hear Hatch, they are really tone deaf.
First?
Go Christy!
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 4
maybe they can get Senator Craig to sing a few notes for them
It’s amazing that Republican Grassley gets this and our emasculated dems don’t.
Jonathan at 3 — Actually, on this bill thus far, they’ve been doing really well according to a number of groups who have been working this issue hard. Here’s hoping they keep it up!
So, some of the repubs finally noticed that the WH lies about this stuff? Cool!
And yes, before anyone asks, the LDS humor was intentional. *g*
Senator Charles E. Grassley, an Iowa Republican and a co-author of the bill, said the president’s charge was “factually incorrect.” The goal, Mr. Grassley said, is to sign up low-income youngsters who are already eligible but not enrolled in the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.
Some Republicans crossing over.
Thought Senator Lugar’s vote against the Kyl Lieberman amendment was more than interesting. Not much being said about his vote.
Hagel has acknowledged the insanity taking place in Iraq years ago…staying steadfast voted against the Kyl/Lieberman amendment
This whole thing just makes me sick… Arizona has been behind the 8 ball in SCHIP for years. The stupid Repug state legislature put a gag rule in place where schools could NOT tell families that they qualified for the program when applying for other services.
Just this year this rule was repealed, BUT that is when Bush applied that rule where those below poverty had to be 95% enrolled before states could enroll any above the poverty line.
Well you can guess it, AZ would then have to drop thousands of children from our Kids First program. Lovely bunch of family values.
Bush: If these childrens wanted health insurance, they shoulda had the good sense to be born wealthy…like I was.
This seems to be the dem’s signature political issue this term- would like to paint some vulnerable goopers as in favor of lettin kids die. They want a political victory- let’s see if they get it.
amazing how much trouble BOOsh is willing to go through to avoid having to veto.
Why?
Stalled in Senate? – TradMed says Dems weak
Veto? – TradMed says Dems strong.
Dems strong = Dems win
Of course Dems = Clueless
Badwater @ 14
That is the attitude
Forgive my ignorance, but does SCHIP cover dental care?
Hmmm another pol by Moveon:
Dear MoveOn member,
Schools here send the CHIP form to all families.
Elliott @ 18
Yes. In MN it does.
Elliott @ 17
Don’t think so. We have a ToothMobile that travels school to school for that.
There are going to be lots of ads aimed at the anti-children Republicans. This one is for Mitch McConnell.
Elliott @ 18
Not now, but the extension/expansion bill does. Also some mental health services. What they dropped out was coverage for childern of legal immigrants (demanded by Senate Repubs) and pregnant women, who are covered in some states that asked for that. It varies state by state.
“Goopers favor live feti and dead babi.”
Yep. Once out of the womb…
Katymine, I was reading some of the comments from TRex late night post last night, and I realized that I was unaware of your health problems. So sorry to hear about your problem, and so glad that you got some good new, re: chemo. Hope you make the speediest recovery!
Scarecrow @ 23
ooo Ouch!
rwcole @ 15
What is amazing to me are the Dems that voted against it. The Dan Boren’s and Gene Taylor’s. I know my Rep(sadly, a Rethuglican) voted against it. I hope the DCCC has the good sense of running ads calling him a heartless bastard or the same only in cleaned up language(after all .. the Rethuglicans would do that to us).
I lost my job and health insurance for my entire family. At end of July my husband who was bi polar killed himself. I am paying for private insurance for both my daughter and myself as my daughter is not eligible for chip here in Pa. I am not destitute enough..
What is wrong with these people? I wish I could get through to these people and the retard in the white house and give them a piece of my mind.
Lee
The stalwart, self-reliant President Bush (and Republicans in general) of late:
“Federalized” health care coverage for poor children: BAD!
Lifetime platinum-plated comprehensive free “federalized” health care coverage for the President and and Congress: GOOD!
Scarecrow @ 23
Tell them to run it in PA-6. We need to get of the Rethuglican in my district(and he voted against kids too).
Arghhh! I’m STILL waiting for Utah to apologize to me for foisting that twit on us for the last umpteen years (that dude is a FOSSIL) and first thing I see this morning is his smarmy photo?
Christy, I need more coffee ‘fore I can deal with that!
Even if he is on the flipping good side this time.
(((((((Lee)))))))
Bipolar here. My heart goes out to you my dear.
Has anyone mentioned that a 10% windfall tax on the PROFITS of the oil companies would easily pay for the 25 Billion dollar SCHIP program? I think common folks can relate to a message like this. Bush lets his oil buddies rake in over 250 billion dollars a year in profits but wants children to die from diseases because of the principles of it.
Y’see, the problem in this country, according to Hoover Institute types, is that we are overinsured.
Makes us poor “consumers.”
Elliott:

leinie at 32 — I knew you’d get a kick out of the “flipping” humor. *g*
Heya Christy!
The whole thing about the strategy is that it’s what Charles Grassley himself has suggested be done. And it’s not unethical in the least — Grassley, of all the current Republicans, is one of the most ethical around.
Lee — Hugs, hon.
((((Lee))))
Scarecrow @ 23
Let’s be accurate. They are anti-born-children. Snowflake babies still have a special place in their hearts.
Lee I am sorry for your loss.
The sad part of our wingy Repugs here is that they keep going to the immigrants are all on the public dole but cannot cite ONE case where a person who could not establish citizenship were receiving services they were not entitled to receive.
The part that drives me nuts when they try to legislate the denial of services for undocumented persons is the alternative. Do you want people dying in the streets? Is that what they want, the finding of dead bodies like in Baghdad?
It is the 2007 version of the black caddie welfare Mom…
Orin always looks like he just smelled something awful to me. Maybe he did.

The Clenis is an odd case, smart as hell, tough as hell, and yet infuriating as hell. I was thinking about this in relation to the discussion on weak-kneed Dems just below. I think Clinton accepted that the country is and for at least a generation has been essentially run by the rich, and that if you are going to get even the slightest good done, the Dems have to carve off the more liberal side of that wealthy group that controls most of what happens. So the question is: is it us who are in denial because we still think we have a role to play in how our country is governed?
I put this question in all seriousness, because it seems to go to the heart of the difference between the DC Democratic establishment and us Progressives. Here’s the frightening part. The Clinton’s might be right. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t keep fighting. It just means we shouldn’t expect to win. At least some honour is saved by fighting back.
Speaking of callous, unfeeling aristocrats.
Barbara Bush may have to make a new purchase.

Uh, Ray, maybe because the Bush people think that loyalty is a one-way street.

Good Morning Christy, Pups.
Before the House SCHIP vote, I sent the following to our R House member, not expecting anything, just because. He’s a herd animal, near retirement.
and then later, since my repubble Ccritter stunned me by actually voting FOR SCHIP:
Yeah. try to shame them into it, but also scare the pants off ‘em, if necessary.
Just don’t give up on them, because SCHIP did pass, after all, and will return if vetoed.
Keep those Ccritters on the griddle unless and until the bill’s totally dead. Please don’t quit now.
Kathleen @ 51
So if he (Bill) gets it, why doesn’t his wife? Why give credence to the feigned outrage by sanctioning the ad? Boxer’s ad still gave aid and comfort to the enemy, AFAIC. They needed to clearly state that as long as there is free political speech in this country, the congress has no business meddling, and as long as someone is allowing himself to be used as an administration mouthpiece, he better be aware that he has made himself fair game, with or without a uniform.
TexBetsy @ 66
You welcome. And I just notice that this analogy makes the Iranians into the French for supporting the insurgents. But then they only support the Shiite insurgents. The Sunni insurgents are the true insurgents. and now we support them against the Iraqi government, per our presidents recent address to the nation, is an ally of the United States. And per his VFW speech a couple weeks ago, the core objective our mission in Iraq is the establishement of an Iraq government that is an ally of the U.S. and can protect its people from the insurgents, who are being trained and armed and paid by us and the Iranians. Or something like that.
Knut Wicksell @ 64

redx at 78 — I think that’s an awfully sweeping an inaccurate generalization — there are a lot of folks who do ver well for themselves who are working very hard on healthcare issues for the poor and the at risk. I think this is a point very well taken. I agree that when one is president, they have to be president of all the people, and not everyone is as generous as we. You forever hear about fierce, almost to the point of devastation, personal responsibility. Some folks would starve rather than ask for assistance, and they expect others to do the same. I know people who have no clue why our tax $ should go to help flood victims. They don’t we have any obligations to people who have abruptly lost everything through no fault of their own. Period.
Sometimes we may need to be more flexible and give in to some things that the other side wants. OTOH, there is a serious difference between the art of compromise and complete capitulation. I would like to see less of the latter.

Will there be any comment on Mayfield Case today?
Adie has a great point that not authorizing SCHIP puts children and the whole public at risk. When you have a large segment of the population that do not have immunizations and they are in our public school system.
Think of the childhood diseases that have been irradiated and are just not seen any more. Whooping cough, diphtheria, polio, even chicken pox now are things of the distant past.
America is a community based society and when part of our community is NOT protected, then we are all are risk.

When you look back at when the odious Tom DeLay was in charge, he beat the hell out of his fellow House members to get them to vote in line – either by rewarding compliant voters through PAC money or K Street influence, or threatening to support an opponent to their seat if they didn’t play ball. Plus, he just plain wouldn’t allow legislation to get to the floor if he didn’t like it.

I remember some immunizations being given at school – especially lining up for the polio vaccine.
TexBetsy @ 135
Why be shy? Link children’s health care to Homeland Security!?!
Please see my #79. ;->
katymine:
Good luck!
OT – holy shit! Lieberman just voted *with* the Democrats on Kennedy’s Hate Crime Amendment!!!
Lookin’ like this one’s gonna be close…
60-39 – Amendment makes it through!
Fern @ 154
Depends on the district. Here we have many free vaccine clinics.
Adie @ 156
You do not have to link…It is Homeland Security
BobbyG @ 143
Well, looks like they will (for a while, anyway). From the article:
The ruling probably won’t have any immediate affect on enforcement under the Patriot Act, according to legal experts who predicted the government would quickly appeal.
Although I like this part:
“But it’s an important first step,” said Jameel Jaffer, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s national security project.
Jaffer noted that the Patriot Act carries dozens of provisions and that several have been challenged _ but that this is one of the first major rulings on Fourth Amendment rights.
“This is as clear a violation of the Fourth Amendment as you’ll ever find,” Jaffer said.
KLynn @ 149
More (somewhat) good news. Verizon reversed that decision to block NARAL. Said it was a mistake. I was ready to dump VW, but that’s not even possible with the penalties I’d have to pay.
allan_in_upstate @ 122
I’m boycotting both DSCC and DCCC but they are raking in big bucks. Between the two they have outraised the respective reThug committees by $45M
katymine 137 “irradiated” = eradicated?
Elliott:
That’s quite a netizen big-wig list at that hearing…
David Olsen @ 153
DING!
They run the ‘good cop, bad cop’ routine incessantly. Their political situation (Bill having been Pres. and Hill trying to be Pres.)is the perfect platform.
TexBetsy @ 151

MayDaze @ 139
Won’t the Bush Toady Supreme Court eventually reverse this?
Fern @ 154
This was in the day when America had a public health system. Where communities had their own doctors and nurses to monitor the health status, health issues & events AND provide immunization clinics. The Polio clinics in schools was financed by the Feds as a nationwide campaign which moved Polio from the greatest fear in a mothers heart to a little known disease.

Joe Klein’s conscience @ 29
From what I can tell, the DCCC is more intersted in beating progressives in the primaries than in beating republicans in the generals. They are extremely reactionary, and were extremely unsuccessful in 2006.
Adie @ 163
You are right…. I do not have edit anymore since I signed up with facebook. Any reason why not?
KLynn @ 160
Thanks. I get that part, but our Congresscritters seem to need a little extra tutoring, hence the need for a blatant, in-their-faces, link. *g*
Alicia @ 148
I think the Democrats need exactly that kind of leader in the house and senate. Reid and Pelosi are giving away the farm. Hopefully they will play this SCHIP card correctly. It looks like the Repugs are taking the bait. But Pelosi and Reid could f**K up a wet dr*am.
That picture of the sanctimonious pearl clutching sourpuss is a bad mormon joke.

Is this how he pays back the Dems for that Iran nonsense?
katymine @ 172
Facebook has nothing to do with that… I have the F-thingy and still have edit…

You may be right, but they’ll at least have to take a creative writing course first.

I’m Windows using Firefox and I didn’t lose my edit function, katymine
Really something that Ari Fleisher and David Wurmser still working the streets when both of them should be in prison for outing Plame
Wurmser pops back up. This at Think Progress
Wurmser: Cheney ‘does not traffic in insubordination.’
In a magazine story this week, Newsweek reported that a former Cheney national security aide, David Wurmser, had said that the Vice President was “mulling the idea of pushing” for limited airstrikes against Iranian nuclear facilities “in order to provoke Iran into lashing out.” Wurmser, who rarely speaks to the press and has since resigned from Cheney’s office, told the New York Sun that he is being falsely accused. His explanation? Cheney would never let him say such a thing openly:
When asked about the Newsweek story, Mr. Wurmser said, “That conspiracy is unrecognizable to anything I have ever seen or heard or done. The vice president simply does not traffic in insubordination.“
WTF… Wurmser one of the architects for the invasion of Iraq, part of the out Plame team, and investigated for passing classified intelligence to Israel.
http://www.rawstory.com/news/2….._1019.html
Wurmser should be in prison.
katymine @ 172
I don’t have it either, even tho not in facebook. All I know to do is double-post (annoying!) or ask mods to fix (no doubt annoying to them).
I.Miss.Edit. FDLgadget-designers, and i think i have company, hint. hint. *g*
Adie @ 183
On the mac, we have it in safari but not in firefox.
I have edit, but only for a limited time after posting. And I just edited this comment. On a Mac, on Firefox
Biodun @ 179
wow Biodun – great news. I’ve read here that the blue f trumps teh edit fxn…so glad that isn’t the case.
but….now that I know it’s possible, how do I tell my browser?

Which browser do you have? I have IE.
Alicia @ 186
Alicia – do you mean the “Edit” button dims after a little bit of time, or that it declines to edit after same?
Thanks
MayDaze @ 161
Until a John Roberts Supreme Court tells him otherwise, His Serene Excellency Jorge W. Bu’ush will simply continue to do as He pleases.
newtonusr @ 190
The Edit function declines to edit about 5 minutes after you post…
Kathleen @ 183
So it must be fear that keeps Decider on message at all time….that and self sedation.
I lost edit when I started participating as a logged in user.
BobbyG @ 190
And impeachment is off the table!
(Going to go bang head against wall. Back soon.)
dmac @ 188
good advice for Iran, don’t take the bait
BobbyG @ 31 The stalwart, self-reliant President Bush (and Republicans in general) of late:
“Federalized” health care coverage for poor children: BAD!
Lifetime platinum-plated comprehensive free “federalized” health care coverage for the President and and Congress: GOOD!
Bobby: would you consider sending those two sentences to MoveOn.Org. The look like excellent copy for an ad campaign. Skeptic
katymine @ 138
Eradicated may be the word you’re reaching for…
BTW, “Whooping cough” is on the rise, as some parents are avoiding having their children immunized. (Vaccine in this case would be T-DAP.)
TB is making a return as well, mostly because the carriers are not getting/cannot afford treatment.
OT — Anybody see Ed*ard Teller, please tell him I need to exchange emails with him. Thanks!!
And on topic: phew, very, VERY bad when they have to send Orrin to spank the White House. Almost like seeing the First Horseman of the Apocalypse in the distance…
Alicia @ 186
I think that’s the normal way it used to be for all. 5-min-window of time to edit, iirc.
I have Windows with Firefox, and all I can do is “Quote This Comment” which gives no opportunity to remove the previous one – so there’s always a double-post if I change anything.
Weeks (months?)ago, when a number of changes were made at FDL, the “Quote This Comment” function quickly offered the alternative, “Edit” when you clicked on it. Not any more, at least in this house. Even with “Preview”, I miss my “Edit”. It was a beautiful “Edit”. Everyone had an “Edit”. i wish i had an “Edit”. *sniffle*
gary hart snarks about iran on huffington post
That wasn’t all that funny Sen. Hart. Piece of advice for you, Gar: don’t quit your think tank day job and take up comedy any time soon.
Hi Biodun -
I use firefox (mac OS 10.4.8).
Looks like the fox works for Alicia – I wonder why it won’t show the edit fxn here….
but I have hope it can.
Elliott @ 177
Enjoy those targeted advertisements, Elliot? They put that data to good use, if they obtain Double Click, they’ll be deadly. Talk about impulse buying…
katymine @ 120
I do indeed. OTOH, AZ is luckier than many states in regard to how Medicaid works. About a month after I applied for disability, I wound up in the ER, thinking flu symptoms on top of COPD. It turned out that I had had a heart attack, and needed quadruple bypass surgery. I had no income but was on a form of medicaid from a previous illness at the time, so the hospital did the procedures, I was in the hospital from Feb. 27-Mar. 9, the first 4 days in ICU. The bill for the hospital alone was in six figures. The government insurance covered all prescription medication as well as oxygen.
Shortly after I received my first Disability check, the insurance was up for renewal, and I was cut off because my disability allotment of not quite $1,300 was over income. My drugs cost over $800/mo, my house over $700 and utilities run almost $400. But they go by gross income, not net of anything. Needless to say, I could not afford drugs, but fortunately, I got sick again, so I received another six months of insurance before I had to go for a year without healthcare while I waited for Medicare to kick in. I was told by the people in charge that there use to be a program that would have allowed people like me to pay a small amount, like $35/mo to maintain necessary insurance when their income is as low as mine, but the federal legislature cut that program a few years ago. I still fall into the donut hole every year, and I still have some serious problems with copays of $35/visit to each of two specialists and $39/copays for each of 4 medications, but it’s better than nothing. I need to ask my family to help with the cost of tooth extractions. And I don’t see any improvement coming in the future. But as I said, it’s better than nothing. And I also have the knowledge that if anything too bad happened, a trip to the emergency room for instance, the state would likely pick up the slack if the bill is over $5K. So I just make sure that the bill reaches $5K (this isn’t rocket science!)
Do you try to edit immediately after posting? That’s when I see the edit link. It doesn’t work after a minute or so.
Christy’s recounting modern fables upstairs, gang.
Ed*ard Teller! ED*ARD TELLLLERRRRR!
HELLOOOOOOOOOOOO ED!

the function we don’t have anymore that i miss the most is the ‘recent posts’ menu…….made it much easier for people on dialup to check back on comments on previous posts………now, i don’t so much……..takes too long, too much hassle.
TexBetsy @ 195
Oh puleeze don’t do that. You’ll hurt yerself, and we need ya. Here ya’go! No charge. ;->

dmac @ 208

justle… fantastic word! Hustle and jostle…
KLynn @ 160
So is having a clean environment. Don’t get me started, heh. I couldn’t agree with you more.
realworld @ 194
Okayyyy. Where do you log in? I don’t THINK i do that, unless you’re counting the blanks to fill in just above the box for writing a comment.
I double checked just now, and I am not presented with an “Edit” function at any time when posted, even immediately after clicking on Submit Comment.
Let’s not forget that eight House Dems voted against the SCHIP re-authorization.
When this is all over, they have to pay.
John Edwards, Wednesday night, when he was asked about getting all of the troops out by the end of his putative first term:
“I cannot make that committment.”
Thank you, John, for you candor. (And george bush and the GOP thank you for caving to them.)
Alas, John, for my part, I hardly knew ye, and BTW: Fuck you in your non-committal ass.
Hillary gets a point for candor, too:
“It’s very difficult to know what we’re going to be inheriting…”
as she signals her willingness to “inherit” the clusterfuck, rather than insist bush and the GOP take responsibilty for creating it. (Which would be rather difficult, I’ll admit, since she still won’t say that her vote to authorize it, was a mistake.)
Obama just vouchsafed the observation that:
“It’s hard to project 4 years from now.”
Why certainly, Barak! Let’s not be hasty. In testimony to their acceptance of the spirit of entrepreneurism embodied by KBR and their “contractors”, there could be Shiite militiamen standing on streetcorners in Basra hawking DVD’s of Britney Spears’ comeback attempts.
And if YOU, or Hil, or John, CAN stabilize things, then just think, Bechtel could come back in for the rest of those millions in the contracts that they bailed on because 52 of their employees had been killed.
Christ, let’s make room on Mt. Rushmore right now, for one of these statespersons.
Gag…hurl…
Should a personification of PERFIDITY be required, this one above meets all requirements
