Tucker Carlson apparently called FDL a bunch of “haters” tonight. Since he is the second most unwatched man in cable news (Glenn Beck’s ratings are the lowest), I couldn’t find a direct quote anywhere, cos I guess nobody saw it.
Hey, Tucker, next time you want to throw rocks at us, go do it when you’re a guest on a show that people actually watch (like Olbermann). That way we’ll be sure not to miss it.

Taxpayers for Common Sense has filed a complaint with the House Committee on Standards of Conduct on Don Young’s changes of Federal Highway legislation for FY 2006, back when he had power and wasn’t having to pay his attorneys $250,000 a month. Their complaint is viewable, and is more definitive, though it has no more standing before the committee, than the complaint Young challenger Diane Benson made on September 17. Laura McGann – who has done sterling work on investigating Don Young – is knowledgeable enough to get the point. Weird that Metcalfe is taking out ads in all the Young articles there, when he discouraged people from even running against Young last year. And, the Alaska Dem primary is still ten months away.

Who’s on first?…
No. Don Young is our sole congressperson. He’s a crook, with more ties to Jack Abramoff and Bill Allen – the ex-head of the now defunct VECO – than the spiders in those last two’s prison cells.
Benson ran against Young last year, and came closer than anyone has in 20 years on about 10% of the money Young spent. In 2006, Jake Metcalfe, Benson’s opponent in next year’s Dem Primary, was chairman of the Alaska Democratic Party. He refused to support her candidacy until the last few weeks, and then the party gave less than $10,000. He now claims that he and Rahm Emanuel didn’t think she was worth ANY support.
Benson filed an ethics complaint against Young over a week ago. Taxpayers for Common sense filed theirs this past Monday. I commented on the irony of Metcalfe’s “JAKE2008″ ad on the same page as McGann’s article which didn’t mention Benson’s earlier complaint, which Metcalfe has since dissed.
It’s going to be a long primary campaign.

It’s not very cool this morning in central Jersey, with very high humidity. We’re having a bit more summer this week. Rain is in the forecast for later today, tonight, and tomorrow.
Yesterday was another bad day, with Dems in Congress not standing up for progressive values. I try to remember what’s been said often here at the ‘Lake: “it’s a marathon, not a sprint,” and not get too discouraged, but days like yesterday make you want smack a few folks upside the head [I’ll start with my own senators Lautenberg (NJ-Likkud) and Menendez (NJ-”I owe Lautenberg for voting with me for the Military Commissions Act when I had to look tough in my Senate race last year”) who both voted for the dreadful Kyl-Lieberman amendment]. Part of my frustration is that I’ve been trying to make my voice heard, calling their offices to voice my opinions.
I’ve got a big pot of coffee made. I’m going out for bagels this morning. Be back in a jiffy!

Why does the corporate media insiste on givin Mrs. Clinton the nomination…I live in western WI and am a native Minnesoatan and I don’t think she’s gunna win the Iowa caucuses…Edwards should wipe the barn floor with her vote on Iraq2 and her triangulating war with Iran.

Good morning, pups. The NYT has Collins and Cohen today: Collins on Democrats not going to Florida. Mr. Cohen is in Sweden and points out that of all the scandals surrounding the Iraq war our failure to do anything to help Iraqi refugees stands out for its moral bankruptcy.

clinton freaked me out (more than usual) with her responses to questions on iran and israel. i didn’t record it, but i expect/hope the video will be posted. maybe at archive.org? so you can judge for yourself.

i think it’s up to us to make sure there IS a difference. if the difference is small enough that some people can’t see it… well then, some of the blame is on those who make it hard to have big differences.

Sorry, I don’t mean to be antagonistic or smartass, and I do appreciate the overall thrust – and individual/collective efforts of FDL folks. I have been a longtime lurker on and early image contributor to FDL. As (I hope) a sincerely concerned and compassionate “world citizen”, I get rather exasperated at what appears to me through various blogs a lot of talk-not-walk activity by those members of U.S. society who appear to share my fundamental viewpoint. I can’t do much to implement the efforts that I urge because I’m not a citizen of your country. I do recognize and salute the efforts that people like you are making, every waking moment. I love and applaud FDL and its denizens, but I still lament the lack of effective action to realize the goals that I think you (and I) aspire toward. My country is pretty smart but far from perfect and I am relatively lazy in working to help fix what I perceive to be its faults, so I ain’t no paragon of activism. I guess what I’m trying to do is encourage engaged, concerned, “real” American citizens to be less “lamenting” and more “fomenting”. Please excuse my impudence, and please keep up your efforts in a cruoial cause. Peace.

Why, Norske (hey, I’ve got a nyckelharpa and I’m going to use it!!)? Well, I think that they are handing it to her because she’s beatable. There are huge numbers of people in this country who hate her guts – choose your reason: she’s female, she’s Bill Clinton’s wife, she’s Bill Clinton’s wife and did NOT leave him over Monica Lewinsky, She’s a woman who has worked all of her life, she’s a nasty person….take your pick. I’m of the opinion that no matter what happens, even if the party elders come to her and beg her to step down so that a Democrat can get elected (and bring the rest with him), because she’s got the big war chest, she is going to be a king maker for sure. But that is just my two cents.

no need to apologize (although i appreciate your kind comments). we’re all pretty frustrated by events, and the temptation to lash out is a real one i think we all can relate to.
i hope you will continue to comment (no need to just lurk)… it helps motivate me to be reminded that there are people outside the usa counting on us and who are wishing us well (and wishing we’d take more action *g*).
just to help put things in perspective, i know some of the commenters here have been very active off-line… including everything from going door to door in support of anti-war politicians to getting tear gassed, pepper sprayed and threatened with loaded automatic weapons… right now, because of some personal stuff, i can’t do much of that… but i hope to get back to it.
mostly though, i think people are doing what they can – and trying to figure out how to do more. no saints here, but we try to encourage eachother and help eachother in our understanding and in our action.
and sometimes we even trade recipes. *g*

The kindness and encouragement for the challenges we face as citizens and in our own lives are treasured support.

Anyone watching Morning Joe? Russert was on. I have never hated Timmy as much as some others. But, that might have just changed. He was positively gleeful over the fact that the top 3 dems all said they’d stay in Iraq. Giddy, smiling from ear to ear. Said ‘you could imagine the cold water being poured over all the dems across the nation who elected these people to end the war’. Ha Ha Ha.

GGwizz, wow that’s a pretty harsh indictment of the community. You might be comforted to know there is a lot more going on than can be put onthread.
We can come and gripe here, regain our courage, and head back out into the world to fight another day. Why would those necessarily be mutually exclusive? We are one of the most politically active communities among progressive blogs. My point is that not all of this is highly visible.

There was a graph in a local paper showing the exchange rate (per euro) since the euro was established. Up to 2000 showed steady gains favoring the dollar (declining graph from 1.15 to 0.82 $/€). After was a steady decline in the dollars value until 2003 and the rate became more rapid until todays 1.40 plus. The graph was in El Pais last week, Friday or Saturday. I don’t know if it would be available on the net. The slopes sure indicated the effects of administration change on world money markets, contemporaneously also with the price of oil/bbl.
I think Russert misqouted Clinton on torture. I remember him saying that there was a clause in the Geneva Convention that allowed for some circumstance where time was vital. That’s a whole different approach than what we’re doing.

We have before, I see no reason we won’t again. Especially when you consider that the events in the past were frightened National Guard, now we have hardened Mercenaries who will most likely be doing the shooting. Taken with the current attitude towards dissent and freedom of speech and peaceful assembly, one had best indeed “watch what they say and watch what they do”. The repercussions could be fatal whether from a Taser or a bullet…

2. i think events in congress these last few months have been an unpleasant reality check. things are much worse than i was thinking (silly me – i thought we might have an opposition party if the Ds could get the marjority in congress).
i have no idea if we can prevent an attack on iran, or even how we might go about it. but it’s too important not to try.
… gotta go make more coffee… too many hours spent awake worrying about the state of the world.
