Saxby Chambliss, Republican Senator from Georgia, and purveyor (along with Rove) of one of the most vile campaign strategies in recent history, just said the following during the Von Spakovsky hearing: That the people who oppose Von Spakovsky are “extremely partisan individuals.” (And why does this sound vaguely like a poorly delivered Pee Wee Herman imitation — “I know you are. But what am I?”)
Well, if “extremely partisan” means people who oppose cheaters, frauds, and liars, then count me among those folks. If it means people who think voting rights are too important to be repeatedly gamed and disrespected, then count me in there, too.
Here’s a question for Sen. Chambliss: Why aren’t you standing up for a legitimate, non-partisan, fully legal vote for every American? Voting is important — why don’t you think so, Sen. Chambliss? Why aren’t you fighting for every valid ballot to be counted, for every American to get to the polls to cast their ballot, and for as open, honest and integrity-filled process for elections as we could possibly have? What’s to hide, sir?
Here’s a question for the entire Rules Committee in the Senate: why on earth would you pass through the entire slate of nominees to the full Senate without comment when one of those nominees is an odious, hyper-partisan shill who hid behind a pseudonym to write a law review article revealing himself to be such — at a time when doing so was against DOJ and FEC regs? What part of walking the wrong side of the rules and regs do you think is appropriate for a job which entails enforcement of the same? (In case you missed the entirely convoluted and whiny-by-design hearing, you can listen to it in its entirety thanks to selise. Huge thanks!)
I got this in my e-mail from Sen. Schumer’s office a few minutes ago:
“Hans van Spakovsky was one of the primary architects of the Justice Department’s strategy of pushing bogus voter fraud prosecutions to stifle voter participation. Mr. von Spakovsky has made it his business to deny individuals the right to vote, and because of that, he should not sit on the Federal Election Commission. I will vote against Mr. von Spakovsky’s nomination when it comes to the floor.”
That’s nice and all, and a good start at a clear, concise statement of what is wrong with von Spakovsky — but he’s headed to the floor of the Senate for a vote when he should have been stopped in committee. Let me be very clear here: Schumer is correct, von Spakovsky has no business on the FEC with his record — I expect to see work, not just words, to see that he is defeated.
Backroom dealing your way through life doesn’t get you anywhere but in the same damn gutter as everyone else. Right about now, I could use some leadership…too bad I can’t find any in Washington, D.C. today.
Why yes, I am pissed. If you are, too, feel free to give these folks a call:

Hi Christy. Feeling any better?
Thanks for the post. Some new info here. Must click and learn.
Bwahahaha!
Sorry, Betsy

but if there is no ‘or else’ from the netroots, well, there’s no consequences, are there?
as long as support for the ‘least worst’ is axiomatic, they don’t have to worry about any consequences for their numerous failures and betrayals.
Hi Christy
he’ll always be von Spanky to me
Keith just announced that a judge in Portland OR has ruled several provisions of the Patriot (intimidation) Act unconstitutional.
Ya think?
RevDeb @ 10
Yes. Violation of the Fourth Amendment, the judge said.
I think I’m enlightened now. I have achieved “detachment”. *G*
How do you describe the sound of one voice screaming?
I feel better now…don’t Bogart that…oops..sorry…
TexBetsy @ 6
Heh!
Did it while you were posting your comment.
:-P
FunnyD
At this point, I can’t help feeling that the entire exercise of calling Senators is something of a waste of time.
Certainly Feinstein has no interest at all in the opinions of lowly voters. She’ll be Senator as long as she wants to be, she knows it, her staff knows it.
“Of COURSE it’s a democracy, Charlie Brown! Just try one more time! Together we can win!”

Iraq vet plans to return his medals in protest
By Ryan J. Foley – The Associated Press
Posted : Wednesday Sep 26, 2007 17:02:16 EDT
MADISON, Wis. — An Iraq war veteran said Tuesday he is returning his military medals in what anti-war groups are calling a rare and powerful protest.
Josh Gaines, 27, plans to mail the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and National Defense Service Medal to former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. He said he will do so during a protest scheduled for Wednesday in Madison.
“I’m going to give those back because I truly feel that I did not defend my nation and I did not help with the Global War on Terrorism,” said Gaines, who lives in Madison. “If anything, this conflict has bred more terrorism in the Middle East.”

Had a tooth pulled today TexBetsy. You got any milkshakes over there…
Ummmmm…like I said…I’m detached, because images like this and stories like this…make me c..r..a..z..y, ummmmm….I don’t like my tax $ being spent for this…like I said…I’m detached now, and floating above it….where I can see this:

Someone tell me again how it is the airwaves belong to the people.
I just had a horrible realization. I’ve been a Cub fan since I was 10, always rooting for them. Right now they are 2 games ahead of their division and have a real chance to make the playoffs and perhaps beyond.
I don’t want Obama to get any photo ops off the Cubs hard work.
He hid from the MoveOn vote and he hid from the LIEberman/Kyle vote.
Damn.
TexBetsy @ 20
You got it.
ccmask @ 22

RevDeb @ 25
very slick, Obama, very slick..
I posted earlier today about Nelson from Florida being responsible for this fiasco.
Wrong Nelson.
Ifthethunderdontgetya Inc., and all of its employees, regret the error.
Rachel Maddow did a number on my party on Olbermann tonight. Good job, Rachel!
RevDeb @ 25
Just a little thingy from something I read on my astral travels today…he had been told that the vote was not going to be today. I don’t know if it is true…or if it is an excuse. Like I said….I’m just…la, la, la, la, la.
The election fraud perpatated by Saxby Chambliss was nearly as revolting as the one that occured on December 11th of 2000.
did i understand mcconnell correctly (during the hearing), that the only way he would “allow’ these nominations to come up for a vote in the senate is if they were all voted on together in a block?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 24
If the airwaves, belonged to “the People”, things we are witnessing would not be happening.
Sort of like James Watt being the Secretary of the Interior under Reagan.
selise @ 33
Since he still runs the Senate, I guess that’s the case.
LS @ 12
I’m a little late here, but LS — this song’s for you *g*
partisan like there’s no tomorrow.
selise @ 33
Apparently, they are still the “majority”…or they think they are..and everybody believes them…la, la, la, la, la….having fun…woo, woo…
Things just haven’t been the same since losing the Republic.
RevDeb @ 36
yeah :(
but, if i heard correctly, does that mean that schumer is going to vote against his guy in order to vote against van Spakovsky?
LS @ 16

One gets the impression that DiFi is in a diving bell or something. She’s not getting it. I’m being charitable, actually. She does get it and does not give a damn.
selise @ 41
I think (hope) that’s only to get them out of committee. I can’t imagine the senate voting for them in a block—at lease I really hope it won’t come to that. If it does, we might as well give it all up.
LoudounLib @ 38
Excellent!!! Thanks! I have a smile on my face LL!
Loo Hoo, she’ll be here. You come too. Bring the milk.
LoudounLib @ 38

So Russert will be running this debate tonight?

Cool! Now to pick-up RoR :P
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 29
The Dems are absolutely terrible at keeping their side in line. If the same thing had happened in reverse, and a Repub had defected they way Nelson did? Ooh look out! Darth Cheney would have done that choking-from-a-distance thing to him/her.
The only thing I don’t like about the debates is that it takes away standard conditioning.
Ain’t it the truth?
LS @ 12
More potent than ever, my ass!
Lahoma has extracted a promise from me not to say anything negative about the candidates until the debate is over. And she suggests another another catfish sandwich. Comin’ up.
Being called partisan by the GOP is like being called ugly by a toad, amigos.
Saxby Chambliss is the worst that moneyed Georgia has to offer, a good ol’ boy in the sheet-wearing, gun-humping, cross-burning style. Fuck him.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 61

TexBetsy- Mind control.
I’ve decided. I’m moving into a commune. Mr. LS may be opposed to this, but hey, why not?
Ish @ 57
which is why all of this in Congress is so frustrating — Cheney et al. are really really good at scaring the bejibbers out of their folks and thereby keep them in line(has anyone checked underneath their seats – perhaps he’s installed electric shocks). And our side just seems to be trying to “herd cats” all the time, which means that there are always a few who drift off and find themselves on the other side. If we could just get our folks to stand up and pull together we would not need so many votes from the other side – but either we can’t..or we won’t…so Cheney sits there laughing himself silly every time something comes up…
twȝk @ 66
Not, OKK’s, Lahoma’s!!! *g* (ducking!)

axiomatic meaning it cannot be questioned, because it is outside the narrow range of permissible thought in a given area.
continual reflexive support for whoever they put up as the ‘least-worst’ got the country and the devoid-of-principle (D) Party where we are today … the conditions that are so cathartic to moan about.
Like LS, floating away will seem more and more sensible, especially as the cries to fall in line and Support Candidate H. Clinton rise to mosquito like shrillness, even as she tacks further to the right for the general election, and takes the poop on MoveOn, the NetRoots, anti-war protesters who don’t buy the bullsh*t anymore… and then, if she somehow gains controls of the levers of power, and unleashes Guernica-like hell on the people of Iran … then what?
will the Axiom ever be questioned? maybe that is what it will take to find out.

difi claimed that she is not partisan… at the end of the hearing, one of the R senators complemented difi by telling her that he doesn’t think she is partisan.
Everythingseemssoneat @ 76
you mean, besides Teefs ‘n Tufts himself?
On my way to the doctor this am, I heard some moron gooper on NPR, quoted on the floor, accusing the Dems of “spend, spend, spend” regarding SChip; I nearly ran off the road. I love the way the last 6 years of no oversight and out of control spending by the Repug majority just dissolve when there is a question of spending just a few billion on children, rather than a couple billion a week on their war. I was so disgusted, am still disgusted.
On the lighter side, I just got my order from Cafepress, with “We’re all wearing the blue dress now”, “Already against the next war” and the old fave “yeehaw is not a foreign policy” for my little subaru.
Ellitot- Ok, then who isn’t excited about a Hillary candidacy besides the Bilderburg Group, Larry Silverstein, and the Bush family?
regarding DiFi, nonpartisan = weenie ?
I’ve got a story for the Vichy-Dems
The Hat Seller and the Monkees
They took our money, our work, and our votes which gave them a win, and they’ve since treated us with disdain. Keep it up and they’ll find that they’re standing all alone with no help and no hats

What is groupthink.
Everythingseemssoneat @ 76

Loo Hoo- “What is groupthink.”
People willing to pretend they don’t know the truth for fear of being labeled ‘conspirators, crazies, fringe extremists, communists, queers, un-American and traitors’, etc.
sporkovat @ 80
Careful here, we don’t want anyone drinking oily liquor and finally giving up the fight…
TexBetsy @ 78
Hey. I’ve got the sweats and the shakes and I am a virtual wreck. I’m very nervous about this. This is going to be extremely tough. But I’m going to do it. ;0)
Um, did anyone see Tucker calling out FDL tonight?
I totally missed it.
Sorry if this has been already covered on another thread.
Ideally, we would end up with Kucinich and Ron Paul…I think that could happen…oh..no…not in reality…sorry.
I think that is where America really is….but, with voter fraud, and neocons, and idjiot Dems, we could end up with…more of the same…W, Cheney, Jeb, Cheney, Cheney, Cheney, Cheney…war, and war, and poverty, and you name it..I pray to the Goddess, to Mother Earth, to all that is real..that we end up with peace. And, no, I’m not smoking anything.. even I, with my vast imagination, couldn’t make this up. We will ultimately end up with torches and pitchforks to try to stop the destruction of our country, The United States of America, not the stinkin’, fake, pseudonym, the Homeland. I’m sad.
Hey TRex. Not I.
Will all primary Dem candidates be in tonights debate?
LS, that would result in an end to the war and a 5% voter turnout.
Thanks, Christy!
How are we going to deal with the liklihood, as explained by Marcy, that Mike McConnell may force an up or down vote on all four nominees en bloc?
Of course we know that the standard Republican (Rovian?) tactic is to take your own sin and accuse your opponent of it before they can accuse you. The extreme partisans in this case are, obviously, the Republicans, not the Democrats, so therefore they accuse the Democrats of being partisan.
The Democrats should jump all over this one with accusations of rabid Republican partisanship on behalf of Von Spakovsky (is rabid Republican an oxymoron?)

OT – re the court ruling today that warrants w/o probable cause (see top of thread) are unconstitutional was in the case of Brandon Mayfield, the Muslim attorney who was arrested on the basis of a misidentified partial fingerprint.
Yea! That case was particularly egregious.
Well, no, if we knew about them, probably they are all just as bad.
Could the Blackwater masscre be the straw that broke the camels back? Could it galvanize Iraqi government to do cooperate and lead their country? I hope so:
via Let Coaster:
Did Blackwater Undermine Bush’s Korea-Type Dreams?
by Steve Soto
…the Blackwater massacre in Baghdad is causing a serious breach between the State Department and Central Command. State is trying to defend Blackwater by saying the Defense Department has more contracts with them than they do, which the Post points out is a lie. The Defense Department says that Blackwater is out of control, that the massacre portends more trouble for the United States than Abu Ghraib,… undermine Bush Administration efforts to sell the Iraqis on a long-term presence for American troops.
The fears of CENTCOM are being realized. …Maliki said he now doesn’t foresee a long term presence for American troops in Iraq, … parliament would have to approve such an agreement at a time when … civil war has been averted[,] and that the Bush Administration is overstating Iranian influence. …now it appears that State is no longer going to be shielding Blackwater from congressional inquiries, after al-Maliki met with Bush yesterday at the UN and probably indicated that the Iraqis will not be backing down on this.

Good Evening all you feisty folk!
As some of you know,
there are times when I’m
reduced to simply making
faces about what is going on.
The last few weeks have been
rough (!_!).
I question the integrity of
much of the d. ‘leadership,’

the world).
Some days they actually make
me feel damned bitchy (d_b)!
Then, I think that they are
just in it for what they can
personally get ($_$).
Is it wink, wink (o_-)?
Or are they sleeping at
the switch (-_-)?
I wish they’d open their
eyes (o_o) and see the needs
of our times.
But, then I worry, when they
finally do so, will it be too
late (8_8)?
Oh well …
This is now the democracy
that was (”_”).
Sometimes it is just really
difficult to face the future

Loo Hoo …
the point is, there is no fight between the (D) and the (R) branches of the War Party. It’s kabuki, for the rubes.
it is the neo-con, imperialist War Party that the fight should be against, don’t be fooled that the (D) sock puppet is on our side. … with a few isolated exceptions, like Feingold and Kuchinich, they are all just variations on a theme between Feinstein and Lieberman, some with exceptional coats of camouflage like Obama.

Lament from Georgia:
I’m not even sure there is a Saxby Chambliss. Every time I write him I get the same I-support-the-Administration letter back. When I look at his votes and his comments, they are parroted Talking Points du jour. We have had some genuine Statesmen from Georgia in times past. Chambliss is more like a character from Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Thanks for pointing out what a dufus he is…

She should be careful about eating fatwa…all that fat in it ya know. It might interfere with her bulimia or anorexia or whatever is addling her brain.
BTW, why isn’t she in jail? Don’t they have orange jumpsuits in her size?
If some minority votes were to be suppressed, say before the primaries it would benefit HRC. Low informed minority voters may go the way of the other candidates, which is probably a worry for the DLC on behalf of HRC.
If there are already enough Democrat senators who will vote to help confirm Van Spakovsky, how Schumer votes, do not matter. What we need is an overwhelming no.
LS @ 23
Why not save the $600,000? Just use the building complex (the swastika-shaped one) to house all the apparatchiks of the Bush/Cheney Military-Industrial-Corporate-MultiNational Combine (aka the Let’s Trash the Planet and Impoverish, Smear, and Disenfranchise Everyone but Filthy Rich Republicans Movement).
RickinSF @ 45
I wonder if she’s being coerced in some way. We all know that the Republicans don’t shrink from doing out in the open things so outrageous that it takes my breath away. Do any of us doubt that behind the scenes they are exerting pressure in ways even more reprehensible? Things on the order of “we’ll sic the IRS and the Justice Department on your husband and his business interests” or “no more fat no-bid conracts for him” or “we know things about you and your husband that would be profoundly embarrassing if leaked to the media” or even “we know where you live.”
