It's the end of the quarter and candidates need to be able to demonstrate to advocacy groups and the DCCC that they are serious fundraisers in order to be able to get their support.
Last year Democratic women running for Congress suffered a serious drubbing:
In 2006, of the thirty Republican-held House seats most heavily targeted by Democratic Party committees and allied progressive organizations, twenty-one of the Democratic nominees challenging for those seats were male, and nine of the Democratic nominees challenging for those seats were female. With the elections over, twenty of the twenty-one men in that group are now serving in Congress. However, Kirsten Gillibrand in NY-20 is the only woman in that group who is now serving in Congress. For some reason, of the top thirty Democratic House targets in 2006, Democratic men won 95% of the time, while Democratic women won only 11% of the time.
We have amazing women running as Blue America candidates. Sam Bennett in PA-15 who appeared here last Saturday was probably one of the most popular candidates we've ever had, and she broke our one day fundraising record ($3,292.00). Our other female challengers include Darcy Burner, Donna Edwards (running against the creepy Al Wynn), Angie Paccione (running against the even creepier homophobe Maralyn Musgrave) and Victoria Wulsin (Mean Jean -- words fail me) all need our support now, with early money that reaps its value many times over during the course of the campaign.
If you want to see more women in congress, now is the time to step up and open your pocketbooks. Five, ten dollars, whatever you can afford.
Let's give the ladies a hand. As Atrios says, don't let the terrorists win.

Jane!
And it feels so right!
As Abigail Adams said, “Remember the Ladies.”
Single digits, not bad considering I just got back from lunch…
You Go Girls!
Will spread some more filthy lucre around shortly.
No question how they would vote on SCHIP!
That was no lady,
that was my congressman
mack @ 6
Now, that’s funny!
Do we have someone to run against that worm from GA, Gingrey? What a poor excuse for a human being. (I’m watching the debate on the house before going back to church for a meeting.)
Is there anyone to run in a primary against Baird in the 3rd CD in Washington State?
Good God, Musgrave must go. The anti-Paccione ads she ran last cycle were a disgrace; beyond negative they went to BRUTAL.
Someone get Hensarling’s (TX-5) exact text—he said something to the effect of who will make medical decisions, families and their doctors or the federal government. I bet he’s anti-choice. Great opportunity for commercial.
Okay, I’m in for $10 for each of the five if someone will match me.
thanks for the opportunity to contribute today to some impressive candidates. I’ve been waiting for the end of the quarter to send out some contributions, knowing that BAPAC, DFA and a few other groups I can mostly trust would be doing ‘the ask’.
As an early American feminist wrote her husband as he was helping to form a more perfect union:
“…remember the ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation.”
Us womenfolk control the purse in a super-majority of US households. Let’s vote with our coins as well as our work and our votes.
Donations this week will be counted in this quarter, which is important, especially for those candidates (like Donna) who are facing (or, better put, creating) a primary challenge.
lets hear it for the ladies!! its the end of the month and i have a coupla bucks left…so i’ll give up $10 of them
Dr. Wulsin came very close - in her first race, 1/2 percentage point to beating Mean Jean in a district that went over 70% for W. That is quite an accomplishment. She has campaign experience and name recognition now. Go Vic!
MayDaze @ 14
Yes. This is very important money.
Fool me once…… Look. As a father of outrageously successful and great Daughters and an ardent womens equality supporter, I applaud all of the potential candidates. However, having been so recently burned by false promises, I really suggest that what these folks claim to stand for is in reality their true positions. We can’t be pandered to and women can be as devious as men. Lets make sure and then bust our butts to get them elected.
Go, Darcy - an ActBlue donation headed your way from me! Congrats on the primary.
Let’s not forget Alaska’s Diane Benson, who bit Don Young hard last election, and with virtually no support from the State Dems and ZILCH from Rahm Emanuel, showed how you can get 42% of the vote on 8% of the money spent by your challenger. You can donate at her ActBlue page here to help put a solidly progressive Native American woman in the U.S. House!
“for some reason” ??
That reason was Rahm Emanuel. He sees women candidates as natural allies of the current Speaker of the House, by nature of their gender. Knowing that he and his butt-buddy Steny had a battle over Pelosi’s #2 coming up, why would he put DCCC money into campaigns of her gender allies?
I think the good old boys want to keep the clubhouse door shut tight, Tammy Duckworth notwithstanding.
Jane Hamsher @ 12
Gave to Sam on Sat. but I’ll match the other 4.
Thank Howie for the hat for me please—I didn’t expect it!
billjpa @ 18
“Let’s make sure?” We have them on Blue America so people can ask them questions and sound them out. What kind of assurance would you like?
Thank you, Jane, and thank Howie as well for all the hard work on behalf of Blue America. Who will take Blue America through the one hundred thousand dollar mark?
Jane! Okay, I’m in for $10 for each of them. I after I post, I go to BA and do this.
And, BA is getting mighty close to having raised $100,000 for BA08. But the time I finish typing my info in and completing the transaction, hay! maybe I’ll be the one to put it over $100,000.*
Much love to you, Jane.
*p.s. If I’m the one to put it over $100,000 I’d really like for Howie to give me is Thai/Hawia’ian (sp?) shirt. Do you think he’d part with it?
What Jane said.
You can go to the calendar at the top of the page and click on last Saturday and read the two (whole) hour forum.
Sam Bennett is impressive.
I chipped in $10 bucks and I don’t even have a job.
OT,but relevant to earlier threads re Little Hans vote.
DiFi says separate votes, no deal and the letters from former employees are pouring in.

TeddySanFran @ 20
There were other reasons. Emily’s list was worse than the DCCC when it came to micromanaging campaigns of women it supported and wanted them to talk about baking cookies and not the war. Women were stuck having to appeal to these big sources of funding — that’s why early money makes so much of a difference. It gives a candidate a lot more independence to run their own race.
Oh and Emily’s List wouldn’t back Donna Edwards, even after the Washington Post endorsed her. If the women who ran last year in the general all look a little pale, now is the time to do something about it.
If this is sexist..I apologize .. Just wanted to dance to Ladies Night with Kool and the Gang (youtube) as I pitch in across the board..)
I’m in.
WooHoo! Such great women who really speak for us!
And topping $100,000 for Blue America this early in the cycle!
That’s a win-win!
Let’s all jump in on this!
Valley Girl @ 24
VG! You rock.
About that shirt — I will ask him.
Jane Hamsher @ 28
One of the many reasons I no longer give to Emily’s list.
SO glad I can come here instead.
imo emily’s list = dlc……
Eureka Springs @ 29
bad link?
BREAKING. girl’s night[mare] ends. Polygamist leader found guilty of rape.
http://www.nytimes.com/aponlin.....er.html?hp
demi @ 25
Yeah demi.
We’re at $99,910 — $90 more puts us over a hundred thousand.
I plan on going to see mommybrain and Howie (I think he’s going to be there) at the Democratic Meeting in Monrovia (CA) Thursday night.
Will report back.
Jane Hamsher @ 37
5c on the way.
Jane Hamsher @ 28
I’ve often wondered about Emily’s List. One of the perks (?) of contributing is getting
on everyone’s sucker lista lot of mail. Never sent ‘em anything, though.I’m in for all five. (Benson is next, ET!)
Elliott @ 34
Whoops, try this, Kool and the Gang - Ladies Night
I’m in for half - 20 each to Edwards and Bennett and another fiver for BAPAC -
let’s rock this fundraiser until the dawn
Yah! $100,505!!!
Someone made a larger $, or everyone did it at once!
oh, p.s. I would give to those candidates, even if I weren’t xx.
Thanks, Jane. ;)
Steve AR !!!! gets us over the 100k marker!
Woo Hoo!
What a team! let’s keep it going … the foulmouthed femblog has the ladies backs!
Eureka Springs @ 41
thanks for the fix
p.s. And, thanks Teddy for kicking off some BA donations the other eve, and by setting an example. What you did got things really close to the $100,000 mark- just perfect timing for this thread. xxooxx
Jane Hamsher @ 12
Hooray for you Jane - am off to match you for these five fine candidates.
O/T -
Breaking: LDS pervert Warren Jeffs GUILTY.
Big yays to Steve-AR, RubyTuesday, May and Valley Girl!
(cute shot of Steve on Facebook. I’m signed up but haven’t done the F thing…maybe I’ll go see if I can figure it out.)
Valley Girl @ 43
Yo Atrios, FDL is ahead of you, too.
:)
I think I’ve donated to some of these ladies this cycle already, but I got paid so I’m in for more.
50$ for each, and 10% to Act Blue.
ittdgy- That’s great! Oh, yeah, I forgot to say, but I also left a tip for Act Blue.
I got an email from Durbin asking for money
BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHHAHAH
I laughed right in his face. He and the rest of the ReTHUGlican enablers get no money from me..But Blue America does always!
Valley Girl @ 52
We’re leaving Atrios in the dust. It’s going to be hard to catch the terrorists, though.
Gotta love this:
Bet the Bu’ush staff are going noookewler over it.
This explains why he always makes those awkward emphases on various words while speaking.
Just saw this in the Glob feed from AP:
Looks like Mukasey isn’t going to be such a slam dunk after all.
I don’t know a whole lot about Emily’s list. But they have endorsed Jean Shaheen. I guess it’s about getting more D women. She does not rate as a progressive as far as I am concerned. I asked GSD about her the other eve. He gave her a C over all. I will not be donating $ to her. Granted, she would be better than Sununu.
And, I would never donate to a D candidate just because she is a she. I will donate (small donations to be sure) to progressive candidates, and BA is the best way of identifying those candidates.
revdeb at 41 says-”Gave to Sam on Sat. but I’ll match the other 4.
Thank Howie for the hat for me please—I didn’t expect it!”
isn’t it a GREAT HAT???? i gave mine to my mom and dad’s 80 yr old stirrin’-stick wielding neighbor…..he harasses repub’s in boehner’s district, it’s his purpose in life……..i almost went over to c&l to contribute to get another one for cassie, but sled did it before i had a chance to……..
jane, i also gave to sam the other day…….so i’ll go chip in to the other four…..even though i have already given to victoria wulsin…….and i think darcy, too……..since this quarter needs pumped up…..
and to those of you with limited funds, me too………but it is important to give to things that matter to you, even if you have to give up something else to do it…….not lecturing, just letting you know i haven’t had buyer’s remorse yet…..makes me feel like i had to make an effort for something that matters…..not sacrifice, i hate that word, but effort….and i usually can’t contribute much, but it is to me.
and sorry to say jane, you can tell if i’m giving to blue america, cuz then i can’t give to fdl……..one or the other……
thanks for all you inspire.
BobbyG @ 55
So, BobbyG, will you be contributing to the “Ladies Nite 5″, on behalf of your awesome spouse?
RevDeb @ 56
must be nice to have Staff for all that — carry your own golf clubs! Mercy!
Valley Girl @ 59
Awesome spouse is about to get RIF’d, after 22 years of devoted and outstanding service. I got RIF’d in March, and am drawing my last unemployment check this week. Scary time at the moment.
So, probably not.
{{ BobbyG }}
just watched madman jim cramer talk of the need to bust the uaw….its amazing how callous having lots of money makes one in the dismal economic shape lots of folk are in right now - just disgusting
Oh, BobbyG!!! I knew you were in the situation but not that your awesome spouse had just had this happen to her! I am so sorry! That totally sucks. Obviously I did not know. Love you {{{BobbyG and spouse}}}. xxxoooVG
Valley Girl @ 43
Yeah!
Let’s push the needle.
TeddySanFran @ 62
Ditto!
And thanks too BobbyG for the link - couldn’t make a comment - but then it is ABC’s site and the right wingers are out in force.
(((BobbyG)))
BobbyG,
REALLY really sorry to hear that. I hope something better comes along very soon.
{{{{{{{Hugs}}}}}}} to you and your spouse.
Maybe this is the solution to our problems:
test
no f.
I’ll try again, later.
I am so excited that these distaff candidates can tell the DCCC and EMILY*s List that their support is progressive and national. Nothing matters more than money right now, folks — the big funders will scour those end-of-September reports, looking for the ability to bring in money across sectors and geography. This money at the end of this quarter really matters to these candidates.
Please help if you can. Now is infinitely better than next week.
I love this kind of thing. Getting the $$ coming in.
But, I would also like to add that there have been times when I couldn’t donate anything.
AND, just to make sure everyone knows- emphasis is that I am speaking only from what I have read on BA threads- Howie has made several comments over the months/ years, in response to commenters who participate in BA threads with candidates, but say that they can’t donate because they don’t have the $$.
And, I have read a similar response from Howie, several times- my rough paraphrase of what he said: “you are here, and you are contributing to the discussion. That contribution counts as much as the $$ donations”
demi @ 71

Thanks to all for the kind words, y’all. We’ll muddle through somehow. Maybe Heidi Fleiss can use me over in Parumph.
;)
TSF- I was typing, and did not read your comment just above mine.
So, let me add, Howie (who does the accounting slog work for BA) LOVES $5 donations too. As in, $5 for one candidate. The $$ count, but the sheer number of supporters counts too!
((((bobby g and the divine ms. g)))) man, i hate to hear that…….
wish i could make it all better………
when i first came to fdl, i would click on all of the highlighted names and read the blogs……all of them……yours was one of the first blogs i read when i first came to fdl…..all about your friends and their music…..
demi
friend me!
Ellie Elliott
yeah its nice to know that if one’s funds are limited you’re not disparaged…after we don’t ALL have deep pockets…but there’s always a way to contribute….
Eeee Gads….House overwhelmingly voted to tighten Iran sanctions.
http://rawstory.com/news/afp/U.....52007.html
Only one little goody in it, and that it is this:
“It sanctions foreign companies with US subsidiaries which invest in Iran particularly in oil and gas sectors.”
In any case, here we go again…give Bush/Cheney what they want…WTF?
Jane has an new thread.
Bobby G, check out this site, maybe there is something there for you:
hi valley girl!-”So, let me add, Howie (who does the accounting slog work for BA) LOVES $5 donations too. As in, $5 for one candidate. The $$ count, but the sheer number of supporters counts too!”
that’s what got me contributing, cuz that’s all i can do, is five at a time, sometimes more……..but it felt good to know that five bucks mattered to someone else besides me…….and that the number of contributors matters, too………
and i didn’t quote your comment from howie, but, yes, i remember him saying that showing up matters as much as money…….made me feel good.
and in my book, input is input, whether it be money or intellect…..we’ve also had this discussion when it comes to fdl, too…
juslin @ 79
juslin, I have read Howie’s comments to that effect many times on BA threads. Howie says what he thinks, as I’m sure you know ;). I enjoy the push for $ when I have a FEW $ to give, but it’s hard sometimes for me to participate in the dialog when I can’t do that.
I don’t know if you have seen this “Howie” video interview or not. It’s been up for a while at Howie’s DWT blog- go over to DWT, and click on the life guard station pic, and then follow links.
Some where in there Howie is talking about how the most $$ that BA raised in a week came when he put out an appeal for $5 donations. Well, he wasn’t just talking, he was celebrating!
hey {{dmac}}! see my comment also, just above to juslin. My computer is going slow, and I couldn’t actually bring up the Howie video just now, but I have watched at least 4-5 times. The part about the $5 donations is just great.
I got my Mom on board with BA this past weekend. She’s going to donate and I’ll match whatever she kicks in, even though I promised to never give again. Mom is persuasive.
LS @ 80
Schwarzenegger has also promised to sign a bill that would prevent California’s two largest public employee pension funds (cal pers and cal strs) from investing in any company doing business in Iran.
((((valley girl)))) you rock my babe girl!!!!!!!!!
RevDeb @ 56
Hi, RevDeb - I hope this is just the start of more and more. Did you read the piece over the weekend about his treatment of an uncharged “material witness” and his attorney a week or two after 9/11/07? He refused to allow a well-known, but Arab-surnamed, NY attorney to co-counsel w/ the man’s California atty, who of course knew nothing about NY procedure. The transcript was astonishing.
TeddySanFran @ 72
TSF: I’ve just logged out at work and will be home in an hour or so. I will definitely cough up as much as I can tonight.
I love that even my small contributions are valued by BA candidates!
late update but wanted to say I gave to each of these wonderful women~thank you all for what you do here. Thank You, thank you, thank you!
I said this before on an earlier post and it remains true:
You guys are making a huge mistake pushing Sam Bennett for Congress in the 15th CD in Pennsylvania.
I am a registered Democrat in Bethlehem, PA which is right in the heart of the 15th Congressional District. I am also an unabashed liberal but I won’t be voting for or supporting Sam Bennett in any way.
She is an opportunist of the first degree who has been using people of good will to further her own ambitions and her track record, such as it is, consists of her taking all the credit for accomplishments that others achieve.
She, and some of her unknowing blogger supporters, have been making much of the fact that the last democrat to run against Charlie Dent in the 15th got 43% of the vote without spending hardly any money. What they are not saying, maybe because they don’t know this District well enough, is that any Democrat will get 43% of the vote. You need to raise $2 million in order to get from 43% to 50% plus 1 vote in order to win.
You really should ask more ordinary people who live in the district what they think of her before crowning Sam Bennett as the savior of progressivism in the Lehigh Valley. She has done some work, some good, some not so good. However, in my opinion, that doesn’t make her qualified for our unquestionable support.
She has also run, and lost twice, for the Democratic nomination for Mayor of Allentown. She could not beat two different Democrats, who were both less than spectacular candidates, in her own base area. How in the world can anybody look at that result and think that makes her a viable candidate to win a general election in a vastly larger and more diverse congressional district against an incumbent Republican Congressman?
A lot of other people have done a whole lot more to support and promote a progressive agenda in this area for a much longer time than Sam Bennett. Just because none of them happen to have declared that they are running for Congress doesn’t necessarily mean that they will all line up in lock step behind Sam Bennett.
In fact, many of the progressive leaders in the district, including some of the highest profile Democratic elected officials are not supporting Sam Bennett Because they know she cannot win the Congressional seat. These folks are quietly trying to find a better candidate and a way to replace Bennett without having her throw a fit and undercut a better candidate.
All Bennett is doing is what she has always done. She is gaming the system to get lots of campaign donations to pay off the $100k in personal loans and debts she has from her two failed mayoral campaigns and to feed her ego-driven need for lots of attention and positive feedback.
She will not beat Charlie Dent but she will take lots of money from well meaning progressives though and that is a shame.
We have enough financially corrupt congress critters without having to elect Angie Paccione. Hope her campaign files for bankruptcy, just like she did…
—>Joe
