Sometimes it seems to me that Bill O’Reilly only opens his mouth to change feet. In a truly cringe-inducing conversation with professional African American Cultural Apologist Juan (”Wan”) Williams, Pox News’s assistant principal recently told of his life-changing visit to Sylvia’s, the famous soul-food mecca of Harlem.
Bill-O was apparently flabbergasted that actual black businesspeople are perfectly capable of running a five-star dining establishment all on their own without any help whatsoever from The Man.
During the September 19 edition of his nationally syndicated radio program, discussing his recent trip to have dinner with Rev. Al Sharpton at Sylvia’s, a famous restaurant in Harlem, Bill O’Reilly reported that he “had a great time, and all the people up there are tremendously respectful,”
And clean! And articulate!
(A)dding: “I couldn’t get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia’s restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it’s run by blacks, primarily black patronship.”
Why is that such a shock, Bill? And where the hell have you been eating all your life that you’ve never been to a black owned and operated restaurant before? Hello? Is it 1955 in there?
O’Reilly asserted: “There wasn’t one person in Sylvia’s who was screaming, ‘M-Fer, I want more iced tea.’
Um…do what, now? Was that honestly what he expected the place to be like?
O’Reilly: You know, I mean, everybody was — it was like going into an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb in the sense of people were sitting there, and they were ordering and having fun. And there wasn’t any kind of craziness at all.”
The amount of condescension dripping off that statement could stun an ox. What was he thinking he would find there? A wait staff swinging from the chandeliers with bones through their noses?
Actually, now that I’m thinking about it, that probably isn’t too far off from what he was expecting. And a big black pot in the center of the room that they were going to chuck him in and dance around waving their spears in the air.
You know, demagogues like O’Reilly and his frequent guest and co-host on The O’Reilly Factor, Michelle Malkin like to make a lot of histrionic screeching sounds about how Teh Left are the real racists in this country, but the fact that he thought he’d stumbled on some kind of magical Lost World when confronted by a group of pleasantly dressed, upscale black Americans out having a good time speaks volumes about his real attitude toward people with skin darker than his own. It is apparently a shock to him, even, that black people are capable of independent thought:
O’Reilly also stated: “I think black Americans are starting to think more and more for themselves.“
What, rather than have uptight white assholes like yourself do it for them?
They’re getting away from the Sharptons and the [Rev. Jesse] Jacksons and the people trying to lead them into a race-based culture. They’re just trying to figure it out. ‘Look, I can make it. If I work hard and get educated, I can make it.”
Right, because in Conservatard Woof-Woof Land, no-one should ever listen to Al Sharpton. He’s a “rabble-rouser”, which means that he works tirelessly to give voice to the needs and concerns of black people who can’t afford to dine at Sylvia’s on the weekends. And we can’t have that, now can we? If black Americans are going to matter, then by god, they better be bourgie.
I think The Late Great Steve Gilliard said it best:
I know a lot of white people have this fantasy that Al Sharpton stirs up trouble and makes things worse when there is a racial confrontation.
But that is a fantasy.
[snip]
What people need to understand is that Sharpton has both a broad base of support and a great deal of respect. If people think his views are unrepresentative, they are delusional. While I make no excuse for his antics with the Dems or his hotel bills, there is a simple reason that he can still command respect among black New Yorkers.
It’s because when things get tight, he doesn’t run.
He stood by the Central Park Jogger defendents long after the case was no longer news. And he was vindicated as DNA cleared them. This took ten years.
Give yourself a treat: go back and read that whole Gilliard link. Gawd, I miss him!
Sharpton has credibility and has a following among a lot of people, and they trust him, because he won’t be cowed by pasty racist pricks like Giuliani or O’Reilly, and such people can think for themselves very well, Bill, you cracker Westbury trash.
To listen to O’Reilly, you’d think no one ever even bothered to sit him down for the basics of Black History Month, the only time some whites can patronizingly be bothered even to acknowledge the existence of African American history.
Let me offer you a quick remedial refresher, Bill: have you never heard of the Harlem Renaissance? James Baldwin? Duke Ellington? Sydney Poitier? Here’s a tip: Black Americans have been at the center of pretty much every significant cultural movement in this country since the beginning of the 20th century. Ever heard of a writer named W.E.B. DuBois, Bill? Frederick Douglass? George Washington Carver? How about Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison? Jessye Norman? Amiri Baraka?
Do you suppose that Bill even knows that there are black universities? Black Shakespeare companies? Or that the first black opera company in this country was founded in the 1870’s?
He probably doesn’t, and would doubt their existence if anyone tried to fill him in. Because to men like Bill O’Reilly, capital-C “Culture” is strictly the province of wealthy whites like himself. He doesn’t understand that to express shock and amazement when a person of color does something as well as or better than a white person is the very definition of racism.
But that’s how Bill thinks, and really, how all the lily-white chucklefucks (of all races) at Pox News think. The Republican mind has never advanced beyond the 19th century colonial paradigm. It’s all self-righteousness and the Agony of the White Man’s Burden.
I only hope that someone in the kitchen blew their nose into his mashed potatoes. It would serve him right.

HI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TRex!!
TREX!!
Oink!!
tres! and TRex!
Hiya TRex! Bill O is stupid.
Get outta here! Ugh.
I let downstairs know, along with a spew alert for that picture. And now to read.
That is some fine TRexittude ya got going there. Would make a mighty fine book :)
O’Reilly is just so jaw-droppingly clueless.
Does Mr. O’Reilly realize that Irish were not always considered white?
http://www.amazon.com/Irish-Be…..0415918251
Bleach is available next to the towels for those in need of some.
Suzanne @ 9
Hiya Suzanne. Not using the diving board?
Evening, all.
I’ll be back after a quick run to Home Depot for a gallon of INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH brain bleach.
Mr. Therapod, you’ll answer to God for that picture.
Evening all. Nothing like monumental ignorance marinated in a sea of bigotry and spiced with flaming stupidity. Billo has it all.
sporkovat @ 11
Uhhh. who could be whiter than them?
Two words for you, BillO: Buck O’Neil.
Arrrgh! That picture! Dark Black Rules!
feel free to use it, cassie, but remember Suzanne’s rule #3 – no getting suzanne wet with splashes
Another commercial announcement, from PrevThread (please indulge me, TRex, we can make some history tonite!)
I’ll tell you something exciting about my Monday (well, actually, ALL of our Monday): At 11pm pacific time last nite, BlueAmerica2008 was at $95,918. As of now (6:30pm pacific time) Blue America2008 is at $98,879.
We have added almost three thousand dollars in less than 19 hours to candidates’ accounts at a critical time: the last week of September, when another FEC quarterly reporting period closes.
Additionally, BlueAmerica2008 is only $1,121 away from crossing $100,000. I’m pretty sure we can cross it in the next four and a half hours. If you plan to contribute, and have some spare change right about now – right about now would be a great time to choose a candidate or more than one candidate (or the BlueAmerica PAC) and put some money in the till.
I got this rolling last nite with a donation to the BlueAmericaPAC that took us over $96,000, and had no idea it would steamroll so quickly. Please join me in supporting a BlueAmerica candidate tonight. Thanks!~
Your regular blogthread will now resume after this commercial interruption….
Haven’t checked, but I will — wonder if we can spotlight this to KO?
edit — yes, he’s in there.
#4 in honor of my BIL, who was diagnosed today with Parkinson’s. He has been one of the foremost proponents of the OGS theory, which embodies the Swine Theory of Bacon-like Thinking. Covers O’Reilly perfectly. Plus we both lived next to Harlem for a while. Lotta real people there, thank God.
SnarKassandra @ 16
Irish were the servant class in the north, primarily, and were treated about the same as people of color.
Do they really do that if they don’t like you?
SnarKassandra @ 16
as a cultural category, WASPS despised Irish along with everyone of a darker hue… there were signs like ‘no Irish or dogs allowed’… check out some reviews of Mr Ignatiev’s book.
jb, sorry to hear of your BIL’s diagnosis. Hope he’s doing ok.
Peterr @ 17
He was a really interesting guy. Years ago when Ken Burns did the baseball documentary he premiered it in Telluride at the film festival there. Buck O’Neil was there with him, as he showed the Negro League segment as his entry. Buck held court at the Sheridan bar, telling stories to the wee hours. It was awesome. He should be in the Hall of Fame.
File this one under WTF?
My former employer has closed its investigation of All Saints Episcopal Church without taking any action against it. Good!
But apparently the closing letter says that in my former employer’s view, there was a violation of the rules against intervention in electoral politics by exempt organizations.
WTF????? I need to have a word with some of my former colleagues.

SnarKassandra @ 16
Here is a nice collection of 19th century images of the Irish from the popular press in the US and Britain. I do a section at the beginning of my race and ethnicity class on steretypes and use many of these. Always fun to watch the students (many of Irish descent) pick their jaws back up off the desks.
madmommy @ 26
Loved Buck O’Neil. He was a true statesman of the game.
Snarkassandra, left you something last thread.
SnarKassandra @ 24
No way. Sylvia’s is really, really uptown. I would do it, but I doubt that anyone there would.
burnspbesq @ 27
burns irs? dang, that is gonna take a lot of ice cream to get over…
DrDick…
yikes!
Harpers magazine has changed its spots a bit since then.
madmommy @ 23
And that was still better than what my ancestors fled. At least (to quote Randy Newman) “in America, you get food to eat.”
TRex @ 32
Of course, if he ever goes back there after this utterly tone deaf, stupidly ignorant pile of BS, all bets would be off.
SnarKassandra @ 23
Yep. Also spit in it, drop it on the floor, and other things you do not want to think about. NEVER piss off the kitchen and wait staff.
RonD @ 30
Saw it. Thanks. Night
DrDick @ 37
This is why many who have worked in food service never go out to eat at restaurants they have worked at.
The other blatantly racist assumption in O’Reilly’s unbelievable rant was his assumption that the measure of African American culture proceeds along standards set by white Europeans, as if African American culture does not have its own roots, standards, history and non-eurocentric modes of expression, accomplishment, etc., that often reject the very premises of white society.
What an asshole.
Suzanne @ 33
Deal with it, my sweet. I’m from the IRS, and I’m here to help you.
sporkovat @ 33
Please also note that many of the cartoons are by Thomas Nast, who created the modern image of Santa Claus.
LoudounLib @ 25
Yeah, us too. He’s a pretty strong guy. The next few years will be interesting, as the Chinese say.
TRex @ 32
Wouldn’t it blend in better with the the collard greens…?!!! ;-)
burnspbesq @ 41
My mother worked for the IRS for years, and a more perfect marraige of person and job could not be imagined.
burnspbesq @ 40
fuck
madmommy @ 23
If I recall correctly, last year O’Really(?) said that he understood racism because he experienced it first hand as an Irish-American.. claimed it stopped him from being a news anchor. KO had some fun with that claim.
Pachacutec @ 39
I think he actually gives assholes a bad name. The man’s monumental ignorance and arrogance almost defy belief.
burnspbesq @ 41
Weren’t you required to say that…??? ;-)
Uh oh, TRex. You and darkblack are in trouble by attacking a soldier like O’Loofah. A soldier for the baby jesus in the War on Christmas!!
How could you?!? Now you’re going to be censured by the Senate Dems.
Although, that would mean a smooth million or so in donations to FDL, wouldn’t it?
SnarKassandra @ 24
Can you imagine what sorts of messes Bill has ingested? Serves him right. No pun intended.
Why are we still surprised when Bill O’Reilly does or says anything stupid? He’s not going to change.
In the meantime, I’m surprised he doesn’t have darkblack’s artwork of him on his business cards. He’s convinced he is quite the catch, isn’t he?
-S
And in other bizarre news from LA, Channel 52 has punished the reporter who hid her affair with Mayor Vilaraigosa from her editors … by reassigning her to the Inland Empire bureau.
http://www.latimes.com/news/lo…..ome-center
In my book, that’s cruel and unusual punishment. But then, I’m from OC.
I heartily recommend O’Really(?) to shrub as Snowjob’s replacement. Nobody else would truly do justice to shrub’s brilliance, in presenting it to the world.
burnspbesq @ 53
That brings up a question — if Villaraigosa and his wife divorce, do they then change their names back? IIRC they combined their names when they got married.
And unfortunately this sort of crap transcends borders: British buddies of mine, when in NYC, took pictures of 125th street going 55 mph because they were scared to get out of the car…and he was engaged to a black woman. Separate, scare and feed the meter.
burnspbesq @ 53
hehe.. Chino’s really not that bad.
burnspbesq @ 52
ouch – from the mayor’s office to fontucky (how my friends in fontana say the name of their town)
burnspbesq @ 52
Can’t say that I am familiar with LA area geography, but according to Hispanics I know from the region, OC is hell on earth.
Blub @54 — wow, can you imagine Bill-O going up against Helen Thomas?
Good evening all.
anyone hungry?
Blub @ 54
LOL
Peace offering for Suzanne!
burnspbesq @ 53
“I’m banging the mayor. Just thought you might like to know.”
marymccurnin @ 51
Oh wow. What a thought…hehe
TexBetsy @ 61
muy delicioso!
LoudounLib @ 60
I’d be concerned that he might just sic the Fox police/secret service (same gang I think) on her and they’d probably start tasering, right there on national TV.
TexBetsy @ 61
Yummy! You always have the bestest snacks!
Blub @ 67
707 but unfortunately probably all too true!
burnspbesq @ 62
(clearing throat) you forgot the penalties and interest
marymccurnin @ 64
***
LOL. That’s a conversation starter, isn’t it?
Suzanne @ 58
She’ll spend 80 percent of her time covering raids on meth labs, and the rest covering zoning appeals.

I am surrounded by teenagers and young adults all day every day. Snack is my life!
LoudounLib @ 59
Helen would chew him up and spit him out, before breakfast…!!!
marymccurnin @ 64
You are??? Why, Mary, you sly dog — we had no idea!
TexBetsy @ 73
Welcome to my tribe…!!! 8-)
I wish prejudiced, stupid jerks would just hurry up and die out. It’s the only way change really occurs.
I’m of the age where saying firefighter instead of fireman takes thought (and not because I am prejudiced against female firefighters, just habit). But it comes out of my young nephew’s mouth automatically.
It makes me feel hope for the future.
TexBetsy @ 73
Snark is my life!
CD @ 71
didn’t we go through this all with Rudy before? This is like deja vu, ‘cept closer to home and he’s not so much a fascist
TRex- thanks for this post. The Billo content just has me….???? JFC.
And, hey, Billo, and if you happen to get lost while driving, and ask a black person/ African-American/ person of color, etc. for directions, they really are perfectly good at giving driving directions, too. Tho that is one that it may indeed take you some time to discover.
marymccurnin @ 78
that too!
He’d just switch off her mic.
If there’s one thing Bill-O can’t stand, it’s an uppity broad.
burnspbesq @ 75
I actually sort of meet him. Cute. Sort of meet Gavin Newsom, too. Hunkalicious.
Suzanne @ 70
penalties waived, interest abated.
TRex @ 82
Let him meet Jane or Christy. Or maybe Marcy. :)
Valley Girl @ 80
hehe.. if you’re black and Bill-O stopped to ask you for directions, would you send him off the right way? Personally, I’d just direct him to blackest deadend in the neighborhood and hope he gets stuck there.
marymccurnin @ 83
Speaking of hunkalicious, did you see the Bradley Whitford video a few thread back today? Hubba hubba.
Blub @ 86
Direct him in circles. Just like his logic.
marymccurnin @ 64
So where is the mayor getting transferred to? How long will he be suspended without pay?
Hi everyone – I don’t usually comment and am not sure if this is on topic but I picked up the issue of Vanity Fair today and there is a very scathing article about the shrub and his inner circle described by Matthew Dowd. It was unrelentingly critical
madmommy @ 87
Oh Momma!
madmommy @ 87
Do you remember the first thing in which most of us saw Bradley Whitford? Hint: John Spencer was also in it.
I’m a cynic by nature, especially when it comes to bullies, but I have been on the road recently, and have snuck a peak over at Fox Noise now and then, and it looks like they are trying to appeal to the black community. To wit: After reporting about the Jena 6, that anchor who looks like the guy who played Jack Berry in Quiz Show, said, “and no arrests down there, trully great march.” Which struck me funny, and now Fox is taking the lead on that young saleswoman’s disappreance in Northern Indiana. Looks like Bill O got the memo from Rupert to start appealing to blacks because they lost the hispanics with the Immigration crap.
All this talk of cheesecake by the girls – Hey Mitch – Baseball is needed here, stat!
tpchi @ 90
Welcome! I just finshed that issue, that article was good, as well as the one about the sliming of Al Gore. Highly recommended reading.
Great restaurant.
Too bad my fond memory of Sylvia’s is now going to be mingled with thoughts of that idiot’s tasteless, condescending remarks.
Wish they had denied him service.

burnspbesq @ 92
He was in Blues Explosion?!?
burnspbesq @ 92
West Wing? Then there’s Studio 60, which totally got screwed IMHO. There’s just something about a smart, well-spoken guy who cares about important things…
And the first quarter of the night goes into the jukebox.
Strange video, but I love this song. And these guys have a new album coming out tomorrow.
newtonusr @ 94
If it will make you feel better Monday Night Football is over and all I can say is that last season was an abberation, and the paper bags will be comming out soon.
burnspbesq @ 103
Oh, sweet — that’s good news. And Dave Grohl grew up not far from here in Springfield, VA.
madmommy @ 95
Thanks, I have not read the Gore piece yet but I was very surprised at the highly critical nature of the Bush article. Does anyone know why Dowd turned on Bush so harshly? I think it’s great but I wonder why
Okay, kids, I’m outta here.
See you in a bit.
Seen in the international foods aisle at a local grocery store. (Yes, sometimes I’m easily amused.)
What’s scary is that O’Liely thinks he’s being magnanimous when he spews crap like that. Like he’s doing a favor. This is how self-absorbed he is. Yes, civilized black people exist because Bill has seen them with his own squinty eyes!
The man is many things and racist is one of those things.
Have a good ride home, TRex.

I don’t know but the fact that she was so easily deluded does not speak well to her powers of deduction. Anyone with a couple of functioning brain cells could see the train wreck comming with Bush.

Hey Mitch. Good to see you.
burnspbesq @ 111
You get the same treatment the little guy gets when he slams doors. Now you have to open and close the door ten times, without slamming, mister!
TRex!!! Excellent post. Am I correct in saying that even before the twentieth century, Blacks had their MoJo? Aren’t we still enjoying the great “Negro Spirituals?” Hot, Hot, Hot!
Also, cuz my puter’s taking forever tonight (must be the NSA)

Hmmm…this should be interesting. Jon Stewart’s gonna interview Bolivian Prez Evo Morales.
Cassie,
If you’re still here.. on the EPU’d foreign language thread.. think of it this way. Chinese is all about the memorization, since the grammer and word order are really easy for an English speaker. So if you take some classes to get the basic spoken skills/pronunciation/spoken grammer (fairly easy at your age.. 2 semesters will do it), and, starting now, learn just 5 characters per day by rote memory (just writing them over and over again, learning the pictograms and stroke order), you’d have the full functional 5000 characters in only 2 1/2 years. You won’t be fluent, but you’ll be able to communicate and read a paper.. It’s well worth it, and you can probably keep up with the Spanish at the same time.
madmommy @ 118
I’m not doing it, and you can’t make me!
Loo Hoo. @ 119

Hmmm.
Cassie wants to learn Chinese? Where does she get these ideas?
My turn at the jukebox-hmmm…More Foo Fighters…yeah…good idea.

OT..but the 24th of September is day when, for the last time in history, a Republican President acted to “Protect and Defend” the Constitution. President Eisenhower sent units of the 101st Airborne Division to little Rock, Arkansas.

Hi, Betsy.
I could have used some help last night. I’ll email you via facebook.

Mitch, I heard something somewhere today about the anniversary of the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn. And then later on I heard that the new Mets ballpark is going to have some kind of tribute there to Ebbetts Field.
BigMitch @ 141
Aww, come on Mitch, it was civilized discourse…!!!
Completely OT but this is making me nutty. Does anyone know who is singing the song in the newest iPod Nano commercial? It starts out “One, two, three, four, tell me that you love me more…. The commercial is just a hand moving different iPods from a stack as the video of the song plays on the Nano.
burnspbesq @ 148
actually, Cassie came up with that idea all by herself.. The rest of us were all bashing Chinese product safety at the time. She asked if she should learn Chinese. The thread then debated whether she should learn Chinese or Japanese. I still think it’s one of the more productive 30-45 minutes per day, before going to bed, one could spend…
madmommy @ 156
Yes — that’s Feist. She is teh awesome!
OT – Back in Indiana after 10 days in California with FDL only via my Treo ;-(. My lurking was majorly unsatisfactory. I kept up with most of the posts, but the comments are often where “it’s at” and I missed most of those. When I did try to read comments, I discovered that double nested comments become a single vertical line of letters. I’m not sure that’s important, except that we may want to keep it in mind.
burnspbesq @ 139:
As LS so ably put it, I wish I knew.
Hmmm.
Blub @ 157
Chinese-more people to talk to.
DrDick @ 29
Dr. Dick — good on you! It’s amazing how many of us Amurkans have no idea of our own history.
I actually remember (or dreamed it?) seeing this topic first on – are ya ready? – a Wagon Train episode back in the ’50’s. The sign, “NINA” on hiring office door with the explanation that it meant “No Irish Need Apply.”
I’m in the mood for loud tonight.
Wanted to put up “Alex Chilton” by the Replacements, but I can’t find it.
So here’s some Husker Du instead.
How about working harder and getting an A in Spanish?
LoudounLib @ 136
Today, (for you) the 25th of September, the Little Rock Nine were escorted to Central High School by Regular Army Soldiers. I was living in the DC area at the time and remember watching it on TV. It was a turning point in American History.
Bill O’s idiocy reminds me of “The Ragtime Dance” by Scott Joplin, 1902 –
“I attended a ball last Thursday night, Given by the dark town swells.
Ev’ry coon came out in full dress alright and the girls were society belles.
The hall was illuminated by electric lights, it certainly was a sight to see.
So many colored folks there without a razor fight, ’twas a great surprise to me.”
- this was written by a black man, but he was hoping to appeal to a white audience. Seems he was 105 years too early for old Bill O’!
burnspbesq @ 139
I know how to do that! I know how to that! it’s fun!
What planet does Bill live on? I live in Houston, and a good chunk of the businesses where I live are black owned and operated.
How old are you steve-ar?
LoudounLib @ 158
Thanks, must youtube. I am hopelessly behind the times with new music. I stick to the oldies, motown, funk, soul etc.

Blub @ 167
Bill Gates is going to Hell, and PowerPoint is the reason.
TexBetsy @ 130
She wants to be language fluent in the global economy. Good for her!
Hey everybody!
Trex, I think this latest BillO comment was a completely manufactured controversy. He knew that making such statements would rile up his critics. Then, the racists and other people who don’t realize they’re racists at heart will come to his defense. He gets his name bandied about on the web and maybe even on TV, and he feels like he’s important.
We all know Bill O’Reilly, Malkin and Coulter say shitty things intentionally just to get attention. It is their game. I don’t think this was O’Reilly “innocently” saying blatantly racist statements with no clue what he was saying. He knew exactly what he was saying. He is hurting in the ratings, his supporters are becoming despondent about the war and the prospects for 2008. This was something he intentionally did to get us, and therefore the most vile of his ilk, all excited. Gets us talking about him, doesn’t it?
When manipulators like O’Reilly, Coulter and Malkin manufacture controversy for attention, I think their comments merit either to be ignored, or when most repugnant, just a simple argument of the points of facts, then we should drop it. Speak our opinion briefly and stop giving them attention that makes them feel important. They want a controversy, they want a long, drawn out argument. Because that makes it about THEM, and they get off on it. I don’t feel like giving them the attention they so desperately crave.
Their only aspiration is to get masses of bottomfeeders to pay attention to them. If they don’t get the left angry, then the right doesn’t have a rallying point anymore. Even the O’Reilly worshippers realize the war sucks. The only thing creeps like O’Reilly can do to try and rally their racist, sexist, brainless supporters to get enthusiastic about their party is to manufacture events like this (and the massive protest against Colombia exclusively for having Ahmeninejad speak – getting to the point of saying the university should receive no government funding).
O’Reilly is a pig. We all know he’s a pig, he’s full of shit, and he is so desperate for attention, he’ll do or say anything to get people to talk about him. A truly pathetic human being, when you think about it.

It’s fun to watch, but FDL really does become kind of an in-crowd sometimes. It’s okay, just an observation. G-Night

Oh, waht am I saying? If he knew (anything!), he would not have said ANY of the above.
In fact, when I first read it, I thought it had to be paraphrased. Who says such stupid stuff out loud? Duh…..Bill O. Old white Republican rich men….

Time for bed. Busy day tomorrow, volunteering at the kiddo’s school for vision screening and then art moms, and then off to speech for the little guy. A pleasant rest of the evening to all!
hi LOTF — it’s Feist. She is so great!
G’night, madmommy.
good night madmommy, sleep well and have a great day with the kiddos tomorrow :-)
tpchi @ 177
tpchi – you are absolutely right. The only way you get into it is if you just keep commenting. The problem is how the comment system works here… it sometimes feels like you just post and nobody’s reading it. That’s not true – lots of people are reading, and you’re probably provoking a lot more thought than you realize.
Hope you stick around.
night Madmom. sleep well.
Richard Cohen is on the “partitioning” bandwagon, saying it’s inevitable. Yugoslavia is his example that proves the rule. Leaving aside the fact that the Sunnis aren’t going to accept any partitioning that screws them out of “their” oil, I’m still puzzling over the fact that no one seems to think a multi-ethnic state can work. Memo to Richard: You’re in one.
tejanarusa @ 162
I also use a lot of other racist images from the popular media from African Americans, Hispanics (remeber Speedy Gonzales & the Frito Bandito?), Chinese, and especially Native Americans (my area of expertise). Using the Irish images brings it home to my (overwhelmingly white)students and allows them to connect with the other images. I use a lot of Native American images/representations to show the subtlety of racist imagery (Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves, Last of the Mohicans, the Cleveland Indians, Chief Illiniwek, etc.).

A few months ago, Dowd had a major turn of heart. I don’t recall the reasons he gave, but a lot of progressives cut him no slack.
I had a sense at the time that he might be looking for a gig working on someones 2008 campaign.

You would not believe the continuing threads on the subject of the name of that item on the right, in a mystery book listserve I once belonged to. Pretty soon, the mere mention of the words had everybody LOL’ing and LOAO-ing.
And on that, as usual, as things are really getting good, I must be off to bed.
TRex, thanks for bringing this up – and darkblack….well, what can I say. We need to keep the brain bleach handy here.
tpchi, see me at #203.

Thank you very much for trying! I get the New Yorker before it’s online, so I know what you mean. Link it up when it’s available. Also, welcome to the lake. Haven’t seen you around before tonight.
I still think we should do a weekly “hey, howareya, delurk and tell us more about yourself” thread. I think it would be nice for the lurkers and the occasional commenters. This place is really cliquey (how in the heck do you spell that? Clique-y? Or should it be Cliqueish? Or Cliquish? Yikes).
I must concur with the sentiments expressed by Louis Armstrong in this Betty Boop cartoon, WRT BO:

You’ve got to realize that some of us hit the refresh button sporadically, and don’t respond til quite a few comments later.
You can have the Beach Boys, the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, the Doors, the Flying Burrito Brothers, the Mothers of Invention, the Eagles, Steely Dan, Los Lobos, Black Flag, the Blasters, the Bangles, the Plimsouls, Oingo Boingo, Wall of Voodoo, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine. They’re all great.
But this is the best band ever to come out of LA.

Actually, TRex has done it a few times. That got me started talking.

I love it when someone acknowledges that you are there…. had times when I posted comment after comment and no response…. started thinking I was invisible or only I could see them…
LoudounLib @ 203
Thank you, I just must feel a little out of sorts tonight, sorry. I really like being able to comment here and find everyone amazingly welcoming. I didn’t mean to sound grumpy.
Hi tpchi…we spoke the other night…please understand, there are so many links and songs and refreshes that the threads move very fast. I know I’ll be halfway through responding to one thing, then see something else, and…pretty soon there are three hundred comments and the wheel is spinning…stay, please. New voices and perspectives are always welcome, in my experience.

Didn’t Cohen get the memo? The Sunni are now our allies, and (as you point out) partitioning would cut them out of the oil money. Can’t these WaPo guys keep up with White House talking points like the rest of us.
burnspbesq @ 214
Nice. Think I may have to expand the already bloated music collection. Funny, but one of my colleagues just mentioned them as his favorite LA band this past week.
tpchi @ 220
Its ok. We all have nights like that.
Had a bad day, starting over!!:))
Steve-AR @ 165
What year? Which event, Steve AR?
LoudonLib – “quirky” is right! It is catchy. Heck, I’ll admit that I still listen to a lot of tone-deaf 80s bands. It’s funny – that stuff doesn’t bother me as much, probably cuz I grew up with it and didn’t have a well trained ear back then. Now, when I hear newer artists who have an intonation issue, it drives me batty.
It’s always made me wonder how people who are film editors or directors, even actors feel when they watch a movie. Can they sit back and enjoy the ride, or are they constantly analyzing it, unable to shut off their training and enjoy the “big picture” of what’s presented because they’re so distracted by details in the craft of making the film.
katymine you are not invisible.

The problem with the “Partition Iraq” idea is that, notwithstanding the level of Iraqi-on-Iraqi violence, every poll that I have ever seen has shown overwhelming opposition among Iraquis to partition.
But when has Richard Cohen ever let reality intrude on his (ahem) “thought processes?”

The use of Federal Troops to enforce Brown v. Board at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. President Eisenhower was, to be kind, luke-warm on the idea of racial integration. At the time he was called a “gradualist”. When the Gov. of Arkansas defied a Federal Court order to allow Black students to attend the Central High School, he sent the 101st Airborne Division to enforce the court order. This is in contrast to JFK’s behavior with the integration of The University of Mississippi.

I passed my cystoscopy [bladder scope] – everything very normal BUT… failed my CT scan
I have a tumor inside my left kidney 7.3 x 8.9 cm AND no evidence of spread to the lymph or outside the kidney. They are saying it is Renal Cell CA but until they do the pathology following surgery will not know for sure. They will not do a Biopsy as it is very vascular [lots of blood vessels]
So I am being schedule for a radical nephrectomy [removal of the kidney] and the Oncology appointment is just in case they find more when they are inside.
The fact that it looks like to be confined to the kidney on scan is GOOD!
Steve-AR @ 276
JFK, didn’t want to lose the solid south. LBJ knew he would but proceeded to become a hero of civil rights anyway. Who was the profile in courage?
When LBJ appointed Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court he commented to one of his advisors, (in the manner of his day) “All over America, black mammies will be namin’ their little babies Thurgood.”
Well, he may have been wrong about that, but he was right about the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

The Court of Kangaroo Appeals (sorry, I refuse to call it by its official name, and I apologize profusely to any kangaroo that I have offended by this reference) has, as expected, vacated and remanded the decision of the military commissioner in Gitmo that he lacked jurisdiction to determine whether someone brought before him was an unalwful enemy combatant.
