As someone who was really pissed off about the MoveOn censure vote in the Senate anyway, I was especially dissapointed with the number of women who overwhelmingly voted for it.
Because they were trying to prove they were what, tough on advertising?

Jane!
Hiya Jane! Now I will watch the video.
No shit, what a bunch of suckers.
No idea. Grrrr.
The MoveOn censure vote was great for MoveOn, but maybe not so great for Blue America candidates here on FDL.
I’ve exhausted my budget on MoveOn.
And will keep doing it.
herd mentality knows no bounds?
We need to find more individuals with strong personalities, who know how to cooperate when it’s appropriate.
Cassie? How you doing on that college application thing? Keep on your present track, and you’ll make waves ;->
Disappointing. Obviously the “Amazons” have not arrived in Congress. Women have power, all kinds of power, but sadly don’t use it the way they could. The whole ERA thing still piss*s me off.
cool video. thanks jane
see y’all later.
Looks like the video missed the fact that Boxer actually did vote against MoveOn, via her own motion. That there were actually two of them seems to have confused some people.
after DiFi’s vote against Move-on (and all her other crappy votes lately) I wrote her to say that it seemed she was having trouble understanding the issues and that it was time for her to retire.
Just got into an argument with Mr. Rev. about it. He ran for state office back in the 60’s and still thinks there’s a mushy middle that has to be catered to.
Screw that.
MoveOn is cleaning up over this and I hope Give’em Everything Harry is paying attention. All of those bucks are not going into the coffers of the DSCC, or the DCCC nor are they going to the BushDogs.
More and BETTER Democrats who have the spine to earn their seats. That’s where I’m at.
haven’t been this p*ssed off in a while!
LS @ 8
LS,
I work in a field where women rule. In a big way. But I still stick to ideas, and it works.
I lived in SF when Mosconi and Milk were killed. Diane Feinstein did a great job that day. She has been riding on that image ever since. Time to bring her down.
And Mary Landrieu can kiss my big a**. She continually screws over NOLA dems. Yellow dog democrat.
Grumble. After the title, I was expecting a post about Babs Comstock and Ole 60 Grit.
support the troops waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
Ouch!
Where did you find that video?
that video was fantastic!
What happened to “I’m a Woman”…W..O..M..A..N..???? We are still here. Who was it that did the best version??? I just listened to Bette Midler, but she was so flat..I had to go…it wasn’t Rita Coolidge, it was??????? Long dark hair…kinda bluegrass??? Anyone?
I gave moveon.org $100 on Friday. I’ll give them quite a bit more if they run that ad against Congress that says “Elected Representatives or Ass-Kissing Little Chickenshits?”
How about “Give ‘em Head Harry?”
Loved the video!!!!!
LS @ 19
Anne Murray?
I guess I’m not really surprised that DiFi voted for it, and I’m glad that Boxer voted against it, instead of skipping out on the vote again, like she did on FISA. I dunno what’s wrong with DiFi… maybe she needs an extended sabbitical.
Perhaps Jane should consider running against her :)

You got that right marymc. Landrieu is nothing more than a DINO. Since Louisiana went to Bush both times I guess she is trying to play up that “moderate” thing. I call bullshit, at least Diaper Dave Vitter didn’t bother to cast a vote.

You go grrrrlll! and thank you. ;->
Jonathan @ 13
Jonathan, I just want you to know that I love all people, male/female…to me there is no difference, and I think you are so right to stick to ideas. Women have a strange “position” in the world - men do too! Men are often saddled with too many expectations, women too few. I think everyone should just forget all of that and be treated equally and work together for a better world. We need each other. Events swing both ways over time…I’d like it to settle down and become united….but that is just me.
Remember…Harvey Milk had DiFi’s number….and wanted her out before he was killed….
marymccurnin @ 14
unfortunately DiFi Inc. (DiFink, DFNK on the NYSE) is an institution and virtually owns that senate seat. I can’t imagine any credible Dem taking her on. Yes, she deserves to be taken out. Not gonna happen.

hey, I saw your small “CHIMPEACH” banner on a fence facing Hwy 80 in Emeryville. Made my day.
Selise…I haven’t forgiven Boxer for parading around Conn with LIEberman, I still haven’t forgiven her, this just adds to the anger .
Senate Set To Vote Today On Condemning MoveOn — And On Boxer’s Alternative
Boxer’s version also included condemnation of the attacks on Kerry. But it’s still materially the same with respect to MoveOn. So while she voted against the original, passing, censure motion, she did vote for her own version.
Problem is, the attacks on Kerry were lies. The attacks on Petraeus were based on his own words!
For the un-stupid girl who went to Tahlequah to bring one of the people (my cousin) down here to stay for a few days. I am going to the Aunties for the night. You will walk in my dreams. See you tomorrow.

Is that video the new Move On commercial? I wonder if Blue America should start targeting Primary challenges more against Dems in name only.

Full of lard from the drippin’s can

‘Cause I’m a woman

I can rub and scrub till this old house
Is shinin like a dime
Feed the baby, grease the car and
Powder my face at the same time
Get all dressed up, go out and swing
Till four a.m. and then
Lay down at five, jump up at six
And start all over again
‘Cause I’m a woman
Double U O M A N
I’ll say it again
If you come to me sickly, you know
I’m gonna make you well
If you come to me hexed up,
You know I’m gonna break the spell
If you come to me hungry,
You know I’m gonna fill you full o’ grits
If it’s lovin’ you’re lackin, I’ll kiss you
And give you the shiverin fits
‘Cause I’m a woman
Double U O M A N
I’ll say it again
I can stretch a greenback dollar bill
From here to kingdom come
I can play the numbers, pay my bills
And still end up with some
I got a twenty dollar gold piece says
There ain’t nothin I can’t do
I can make a dress out of a feed bag
And I can make a man out of you
‘Cause I’m a woman

I called Amy Klobuchar’s office after the vote to say that I thought the MoveOn ad was truthful and justified and to let her know that I was more likely to support MoveOn with financial contributions than to give to her campaign. The staffer was subdued but sounded ticked off. I can’t believe Klobuchar was so out of tune with the reality of the situation. Gave a few bucks to MoveOn later that night.
61% of americans have a favorable opinion of Petraeus according to a recent poll- so lots of people were probably pissed at the ad. Goopers know it- and found a good opportunity to highliht their favorite theme- dems don’t support defense..
All bullshit and won’t matter much in a couple of weeks I suspect- but the ad did give goopers a nice opening.
marymccurnin @ 75

I guess the one that surprises me most is Mikulski. I thought she was smarter than that. I thought she would pick up on it being a free speech issue, I figured she’d remember Kerry and Max Cleland, and Schinseki, Abizaid, Odom, Batiste, Casey, et al, and I figured she would be fearless. Didn’t see any of that. Too bad.

I photoshopped a picture of Rosie the Riveter to make her giving a fist up and slapping her bicept in the “universal sign of disdain.” Changed the words to “Fuck Bush.”

Franco @ 73
She should. At least Ted Stevens has only steered his family to oil and fishing industry profits. Feinstein has used her committee positions in the Senate to enrich her husband, a goddam fucking WAR PROFITEER!:
The problems stem from her subcommittee activities from 2001 to late 2005, when she quit. During that period the public record suggests she knowingly took part in decisions that eventually put millions of dollars into her husband’s pocket — the classic conflict of interest that exploited her position and power to channel money to her husband’s companies.
In other words, it appears Sen. Feinstein was up to her ears in the same sort of shenanigans that landed California Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham (R) in the slammer. Indeed, it may be that the primary difference between the two is basically that Cunningham was a minor leaguer and a lot dumber than his state’s senior senator. […]
In spite of the blatant appearance of corruption, no major publication has picked up on the story, the Senate Ethics Committee has reportedly let her slip by, and she is now chairing the Senate Rules Committee, which puts her in charge of making sure her colleagues act ethically and avoid the sorts of conflicts of interest with which she is personally and so obviously familiar.

Let’s face it. The Dems were TOTALLY cowed by the Repubs on this one. It’s positively disgusting! WTF is going on here? I really don’t understand what happened. How about the Repubs repudiating Rush Limbaugh, or Ann Coulter?? Watching the news tonight about how Bush has won this one and how much the Dems are in disarray was depressing. Huh? Polls I saw said around 60% expected Patraeus to lie. Moveon raised nearly $1 million in 24 hours after the vote. I love it when Goopers advertise their wide stance - now Moveon can buy even more ads that resonate while offending the inside-the-beltway types. And the more they’re offended, the more money Moveon will raise.
I don’t think it matters anymore what is said about THE AD. It’s over, and I believe Moveon won.
This from someone who was skeptical when it came out. But the ad has had impact, they have gained membership, and by what I’m reading at FDL, they’ve had a serious bump in contributions. That sounds like victory to me.
I think moveon’s major problem now is which target to pick next, in such an incredibly target-rich environment.
Feinstein is unlikely to get re-elected- she’s getting to the age where maybe she doesn’t give a shit.

Whoah! Just went to the Washington Post for a late-Saturday-evening check and what turned up? Little Debbie apologizing for the fact that the WaPo screwed up their coverage of the Sept. 15 demonstrations in DC. Oh, there were a lot of reasons like breaking news and editing on the fly — but for once she acknowledges that the Post was WRONG.
It almost impressed me — after a week of hearing about how up is down and black is white — how screwing kids out of healthcare is principled, and challenging a general is unAmerican, and how 51 votes no longer constitutes passage of a bill, finally a little (and yeah, it’s a little) bit of light. Maybe.
Or maybe it’s just that, as my Dad used to say, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

I accidentally turned to Fox Noise. Instead of a cute, leggy blond, there is a Special Report on that most illustrious of all generals, Gen. Petraeus. he walks on water and none should ever dare criticize his genius.
Fox Noise says his nickname is “Peaches” Petraeus. Fox reports all his great military successes in Iraq. Actually, the successes have all been failures.
But, all the top military generals have been failing for the last 4 and a half years. The initial invasion was not a great victory. The initial liberation turned into a repressive military occupation. Weapons depots were left unguarded. Looting, insurgency, death squads, etc. etc…
All the generals have failed there and they will continue to fail. The plan is to fail and to destroy Iraq and that plan is succeding. They keep obeying the worst military leader ever, Kommander Guy.

From Feinstein’s wikipedia entry:
Between 2001 and 2006[23], Diane Feinstein served as the ranking member of the United States Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies, also known as the “MILCON” subcommittee. Feinstein also served as chair of the MILCON subcommittee when the Democrats controlled the Senate in 2001 and 2002.
While on the MILCON subcommitte, Feinstein voted for appropriations worth billions of dollars to firms owned by her husband, Richard C. Blum.[5] This included millions of dollars in contracts awarded to Blum’s Perini Corporation to provide goods and services in Iraq and Afghanistan…
I had a thought about how we might break through some cognitive dissonance…we need to make football analogies. The NFL is transcendent, so let’s use it to break through. George Bush is a worse owner than William Clay Ford, and changing coaches doesn’t mean an damn thing because the whole organization is broken. Criticizing Petraeus is like criticisng the the coach. If the team is 2-10, and they keep telling us we’re making progress, who is going to believe them? And what self respecting Lions fan WOULDN’T say the coach is a lying sack of shit?

Hey, Raven, when I mentioned Cosby yesterday, you said you thought he only had honorary degrees, and he does have a ton of those. But he also has an earned doctorate (from this link.)

Sorry. I was going for snide and ended up with nada.
Do the democrats ever get together and plan strategy? I mean, really. Or would Lieberman always have to be invited? Or is there another Benedict amongst them that prevent such planning meetings? Or is it just every man for himself? This MoveOn vote, though, I see no sense in it. Either you believe in free speech, or you don’t. And if you don’t, you’re breaking your oath to uphold the Constitution. Why does easy become so difficult for so many of these people?

[Mod Note; that’s in a metaphorical sense, right?]
BigMitch @ 166
A good rest of the evening to you, Big Mitch.
I learned many years ago that women in power can be just as incompetent as men in power (I had a bad boss who was just as bad as her male counterparts). But it disgusts me that it seems too many women, particularly politicians, are so worried about “fitting in” with the boys club that they get pulled into stupid actions. Where’s the courage of conviction?
Amy Klobuchar is my senator, I admired her and contributed to get her elected. But she has now voted on two things that call into question her competence—the FISA Bush gimme and now this MoveOn censure. Her father is a journalist, so you’d think she’d have a better understanding of the dangers of using government to attack legal, free speech.
Unfortunately, I’m feeling sure that she’ll next vote to make the FISA changes permanent (and expand them like Bush has called for), as well as give retroactive immunity to AT&T and others for illegally spying on Americans. She dithers with non-controversial things like toy safety while enabling the worst attacks against our Constitution.
BigMitch @ 166
Good evening, BigMitch. Always good to visit with you. Shalom!
Is Reid a coward?
I’m not sure that physical courage is the right analogy to use here.
This is not a fist fight.
Harry shaves his **** Reid.

RevDeb @ 156
Maybe there are other explanations. I’ve suspected for years, ever since the rise of Clinton “centrism,” that many Dems are there specifically to undermine the Party from within. Throw us Liberals just enough bones to keep us complacent enough to keep voting them in, while doing their Conglomerate masters’ biddings.
For me, the last few months have basically proven this theory. I don’t buy the “they’re just too dumb,” or “they just keep getting beat by great Repube strategy” arguments. When it’s the same thing year after year, I find these excuses harder to believe than my conspiracy theory.
I got it, newtonusr.
rwcole @ 171
Maybe not, but how many examples of bad faith do you need before you begin to distrust anything your counterparts say or do? It takes physical courage to stand and deliver in the face of the Noise Machine.
— carl levin (9/20/07 on the senate floor)
all quotes are from the congressional record.
Anyone wanna pick a different target?
I get sick of feeling as if we’re standing side-by-side with repubbles, being laughed at as we pick on our own side.
Deep down, surely you know it’s gotta be straight outta Kkkarl’s book a slicktricks, to get us to do that.
Enough for me. I’ll criticise, and pester over substance, but I won’t demean and mock any more, not when they’re in the trenches, appearing to work hard.
This nasty admin. has rocked some of the best back onto their heels. I’ve never seen a steadier stream of such vicious tactics, not just during campaigns, but year-in and year-out.
We have to figure some way to lean HARD on our side over policy and tactics, but not squash them under our collective heel. I suspect that was one trouble with the MoveOn Betr-ad. Given the toxic climate right now, it shocked them.
All is not lost, either way, but consider approaching congresscritters in a more user-friendly way, but no-less tough and urgent about issues than you did before.
At least file the thot and think on it. Thanks.
puppethead @ 169
In the corporate world, men choose the woman for senior positions thus they look for their own kind. She gets in because she is a good ole boy. If not, she isn’t on the short list of candidates.
People have to be careful to avoid treating polling info like this as useful. The only thing polls like this measure is, “how successful has the propaganda been?“
Why would 61% of people have a favorable opinion of Gen. Petraeus, when most people don’t know jack about the General? Likewise, why would they assume the negative-that he would lie, when, again, they know nothing or very little about him, have no idea what the facts on the ground are, or even what they would need to be? Most people are not informed enough to have a competent opinion on these questions, and that means the poll is useless. Worse than useless-misleading. Polls saying the surge will or won’t work, when the vast majority of people have very little concept of military strategy or what urban warfare entails, or how much of the information coming out of Iraq is reliable.
I just hate polls where they ask people questions they can’t possibly be competent to answer, and then draw conclusions that are treated as authoritative .
Jonathan @ 173
i know you can take it.
but that doesn’t make it right.

Another argument for public funding of elections. Did anyone see Bill Clinton on The Daily Show last week? He was talking about the difference in scheduling and time constraints from when he was first involved with Congress and today. He said when he first got his start Congresspeople spent 7 months in Washington, not leaving on weekends. They were able to confer with one another, have a regular schedule, etc. Then they went home for 5 months and traveled their districts or states and talked to the people. Now it is completely different, and he thinks the increased demands for constant fundraising, non-stop travel etc has contributed to the free-floating hostility. He stopped short of advocating public funding for elections, but his thoughts were interesting.

ya suppose that Bush’s
sycophantsadvisors are selling Georgie that his JAR approval rate is really 129%?Man, I sure hope the Iraqis stick to their guns on getting Blackwater out.
It was not clear if the resumption of convoys was a signal of some political compromise between the State Department and the Iraqi government, which had demanded that the United States drop Blackwater as its protector, or whether it simply meant that American officials felt they could not afford to remain grounded. The State Department relies on Blackwater for its security outside the fortified Green Zone.

the very one, i sent it to jane last night and she gave some awesome suggestions. I was surprised someone didn’t already have the name at youtube. Up untill now I’ve been busying myself making “beaver” videos to keep the city from extermination our local family. Politicians aren’t nearly as furry and cute.
RonD @ 180
There is a low bar for favorability these days. I have mildly favorable opinion of Petraeus. I don’t think he exactly outright lied during the hearings, which makes him better than Gonzales and McConnell and a dozen other Bush administration officials. I think Petraeus foolishly played politics (out of vanity mostly) and also was put into a difficult position -Bush was clearly using him and hiding behind him. I think he has done a good job given the material he was given and whether the surge worked or not as a tactic is completely beside the point, because the strategic purpose (Iraqi political reconciliation) that the surge was meant to facilitate has been a total failure.
So, it is complicated world, and this is reflected in what may seem to be strange answers to a set of polling questions.
On the big picture, the public got it right -they want a commitment to some kind of withdrawal over the next year to 18 months, and they want a timeline. The dog and pony show did not budge the public on that one inch. It may have even backgired and cemented public opinion further.
And to add to my statement @197
She did miss Dan White’s bullet and was a strong figure during those dark sobering days after the assassinations. I truly believe she was genuine and not politically motivated at that time. The horror and pain was thicker than a dense fog covering the city. Those were gloomy days. People hurt. It was palpable.
Loo Hoo. @ 194
How do you know the respondents are telling the truth?
PeteCO @ 198
Maybe many of the dems are really just repubs sheeps clothing.

Nope. Not at all. I’m probably just as white-hot angry as you. selise. You in particular provide gobs of incredibly valuable info. and thoughtful comments I always love to read.
I’d hate to see all of us marching in lockstep as the repubbles do. NEVER! But I can’t imagine us doing that anyway. Just wanted to toss that thot out, because I see the pols, even the seasoned ones, with that deer-in-the-headlights look. I honestly think a lot of them have been so caged by roverian slime, and hammered from all sides, that some seem to have lost their bearings at the moment. With our combined efforts, we’ll bring’em back, eh?

Ha! Frank Rich is asking Larry Craig to stay put!
Not only did the senator do nothing wrong, but in scandal he has proved the national treasure that he never was in his salad days as a pork-seeking party hack. In the past month he has served as an invaluable human Geiger counter for hypocrisy on the left and right alike. He has been an unexpected boon not just to the nation’s double-entendre comedy industry but to the imploding Republican Party. Gays, not all of them closeted, may be among the last minority groups with some representation in the increasingly monochromatic G.O.P. If it is to muster even a rainbow-lite coalition for 2008, it could use Larry Craig in the trenches.

Ed*ard Teller @ 141
Feinstein’s true colors are finally showing through. Her vote for FISA, the Leslie Southwick betrayal, and her lack of contrition say that she is indeed on her last term. She has always favored authoritarian positions while pretending to be liberal, and feathering her nest all the while. The Senate and California will be better off without DiFi.
newtonusr @ 207
Or, If you support the troops and think they’re so great, why do you feel compelled to employ a private army of mercenaries to do their jobs? Do you question the loyalty of the enlisted men?
I’ve raised and contributed so much money over the years for Dems that it makes me sick. I decided this week that I will send all of my money to MoveOn from now on. I couldn’t be more pissed at the Dems in congress.
newtonusr @ 207
Why are we spending this kind of tax money on mercenaries? I agree, the MSM needs to get all over this, which they finally have on the issue of the arms and the shooting, but not the more substantial issue of why we need these goons at all.

What these Senators really need is a lesson in civics and good citizenship. While I could understand questioning whether an ad is in good taste or uses poor judgment, I would think that a Senator should be able to discern that to
censorcensure it is unconstitutional. I don’t understand what it is about that concept is so hard. I also don’t understand why they can’t seem to fling the mud back, ever. You need to call a spade disingenuous when you see them accusing others of what they are infamous for doing the exact same things themselves. They could cite Kerry, Max Cleland, even McCain himself. They could also cite Colin Powell for how they wrecked his reputation, Schinseki for how they refused to listen to what he had to say about troop strength, and then fired him when he said it, and all the others. They need an open letter or something that comes out in strength aside from but supporting Move on dot org.SeamusD @ 220

Hey pups -
Did you know you can take a dump in your neighbors’ lawns so toxic it costs $500 million to clean up?
And DiFi will give you back 80 times the damage you caused - if you just promise to clean up?
So the next time ELF burns down an apartment complex, I guess DiFi will offer them 80 times the cost of the arson - if they just promise to clean up.
After all, she’s an environmentalist.
DiFi, working to give 40 billion dollars of US taxpayers’ Federal water to 500 wealthy families… in secret discussions.
While Arnold calls the State Legislature back in “special session” for “emergency discussion of…
health care and dams.
That whole “LA’s living in a desert…we need water” thing just kinda dawned on Arnold this summer.
While he was driving down Mulholland.
LA’s Metropolitian Water District…
the real power in SoCal…
the power of life in the desert…
the Lords of the Tap
…are smiling.
And north of the Tehachapis the 500
familieslords of the Westlands Water District -The same Lords of the Westlands DiFi wants to give $40 billion in return for the half-billion they us, the taxpayers?
They want us to pay for them to raise Shasta Dam and drown the upper Sacramento, McCloud, and Pit Rivers
The Lords of the Westlands demand that all US taxpayers cough up the bucks for them to extend their
siphonsdicks up the length of the state to do the dirty deed.Talk about political juice.
Then the Lords of the Westlands can take the taxpayer-subsidized irrigation water and sell it at market rates to land speculators.
Or just lease the rights.
Because - after the $40 billion handout from DiFi, the Lords of Westlands need a handout, not just the land.
Yep, caught us all by surprise.
SoCal wants NoCal water.
Who knew?
Meanwhile, back at the slurpfest, the real rulers of California -
Big Ag, Big Land, and Big Water -
are seeding and subdividing and sprinking all over each other to the joy of their
littlenano hearts. The Federalwe citizens’Our water that DiFi plots to give to the 500 families…can flow out of the same taps Ahhnuld just figured out need water.
So the whole “emergency” water bond isn’t needed - unless you’re Ahhnuld’s backers in Big Land and Big Water.
Gov. “Water! Who knew?” called an emergency session to push 9 billion of water projects (5.6 billion in dams) on California…mostly useless boondoggles producing 1,200 dollar/acre foot water.
Gotta make sure Big Construction and Big Finance get a slurp, too.
Bottoms up!
(hey is that Sen. McConnell?)

However, this has not stopped me from seriously considering making our other machine dual-boot, with Ubuntu as the other OS. I don’t like being tied to one product.

I don’t do Windows or PCs of any stripes. But the Macs of the past couple of years with dual processors can do windows as well as Mac OS.
Personally, my laptop is a Microsoft free zone.
NYT Mukasey opinion.
Mr. Mukasey has attributes that could make him a good attorney general. He has been a lawyer and federal district court judge in New York, where he enjoys a good reputation. Although he is not divorced from politics (he is on an advisory committee to Rudolph Giuliani’s campaign), it is unlikely that he would run the Justice Department as an adjunct of the White House, or a booster of the Republican Party, as Alberto Gonzales did.
Aspects of his record, however, are troubling. As a judge, he was too deferential to the government. In the case of Jose Padilla, who was accused of participating in a dirty bomb plot, he ruled that the president may detain American citizens indefinitely as “enemy combatants.” His dangerously narrow reading of the Constitution was rightly reversed by a federal appeals court.

That’s why all of this “new and better Democrat” garbage is a waste of breath. Once your inside you don’t want to come out. Washington is a money-maker for these people, and that’s why they crap all over those who support them, we were too stupid to get a real goddamned job.
