It was yet another exhilarating week in America. I'm sure you were all as uplifted as I was.
How heartening to learn, for instance, that the upper chamber of our national legislature is not remotely afraid to Unite in Strength to confront what is without doubt the most deadly threat now faced by Our Union: newspaper advertisements that might perhaps hurt one of our brave generals' feelings. Habeas Corpus, Shmabeus Shmorpus. Giving American troops a break from the meatgrinder: unimportant. Ending a war that the overwhelming majority of Americans despise and that has left a million people dead who were intended to be "liberated," and has left many millions more refugees in hideous circumstances: BO-RING!
If The United States is indeed an Experiment in the Wonders of Representative Democracy, I'm about ready to suggest that we try it again, only this time without all the damn hydrochloric acid dumped into the beaker.
I myself began the week by exercising my rights and indeed duties as a citizen, by participating in the march against the war in our nation's capital last Saturday. It was kind of fun, and you can read about our adventures here, if you are so inclined. I don't think we stopped the war, but what the hell, it was worth it. I got the picture over there in the corner, for instance. And yeah, it's exactly what it looks like. That's an old guy with a cigarette, cell phone, Uncle Sam hat... and a flag down his pants.
I repeat. This is a photograph of a guy with a flag sticking out of his ass. Sort of sums up the week, somehow.
I'm just glad there was a breeze. Otherwise I might have had to see him wagging that star-spangled stuff to make it flutter.
Anyway, what I'm saying is, this last week stank. But it was enlivened by this bit of joy from St. Rudy of the Towers, where he attempts to explain to the NRA his evolving views on gun control:
"I believe that law enforcement should focus on enforcing the laws that exist on the books as opposed to passing new extensions of laws," Mr. Giuliani said. He added that his views have been shaped by his time as a prosecutor, mayor and even by Sept. 11, which he said, “puts a whole different emphasis on what America has to do to protect itself.”
At least the guy in the photo only flies Old Glory out his back porch. Rudy Giuliani has been bulging 9/11 of all things into his trousers for years, like he thinks the whole point of that day was to protrude like his own private personal zucchini stuffed in a sweatsock. "9/11 made me rethink gun control!" Wanker. Horrible, shallow, unthinking, soulless, opportunistic, buzzard-assed Nosferatu-looking swine. Never mind the corpses, here's Giuliani.
Of all the GOP candidates, my contempt for Rudy is by far the most frigid & boundless. And that's going some.

Twisted Martini @ 1
Congrats! Right On, Thers!!!
o winguttia!
My name is Suzanne. I will not sit down and shut up. MoveOn speaks for me.
Thers !!
Evening Thers. Thanks for the post.
The right wing crazies are still crazy eh?
WAY crazy…
‘Bama just scored, in the battle of Red State behemoths.
Great post, Thers. What fools, still crazy after all these years.
Hi all
Suzanne @ 4
What she said.
We gotta come up with a better word than crazy. It just doesn’t seem to cut the mustard.
Suzanne @ 4
Bonne Soir, Ma Cheri! I saw your FB pic for shortness, I’m disappointed in your shorn locks, yet, if you’re happy…!!! *g*
TexBetsy @ 6
Calling them crazy could be read to mean that they aren’t responsible for their actions. As far as I’m concerned, they’re fucking bastards.
But, having thoroughly humiliated the Dems regarding MoveOn,
and made the world safe for four-star generals,
the Repubs will now turn their attention to slashing the deficit,
battling corruption, and restoring honor and dignity to the White House.
allan_in_upstate @ 15
Or not.
well, ct, i’m disappointed with your disappointedness
No rest for the wicked:
Amendment Eases War on Iran
By Leslie on Sep 22, 2007 in Current Affairs
http://noquarterusa.net/blog/2.....r-on-iran/
…
” (3) that it should be the policy of the United States to combat, contain, and roll back the violent activities and destabilizing influence inside Iraq of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, its foreign facilitators such as Lebanese Hezbollah, and its indigenous Iraqi proxies;
(4) to support the prudent and calibrated use of all instruments of United States national power in Iraq, including diplomatic, economic, intelligence, and military instruments, in support of the policy described in paragraph (3) with respect to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxies. “
….
Larry Johnson’s No Quarter blog concludes the post with
” Before the Bush administration and members of Congress push us into another war of choice with another country that hasn’t attacked us, shouldn’t we be engaging in direct talks with Iran first before we start dropping bombs. Would that be too much to ask? “
—————
Something else to watch in Congress.
allan_in_upstate @ 15
And then monkeys will fly out of my butt.
Must-see TV — Fox News-style
from TPM Josh Marshall by Steve Benen
Two weeks ago, after Gen. David Petraeus’ highly-anticipated congressional testimony, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq offered one “news” outlet an exclusive: the Fox News Channel. Tonight, the network will apparently return the favor with an hour-long hagiography.
At 9 pm ET on Saturday, Fox News will air a one hour special about the top commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, who recently argued in Congressional testimony that President Bush’s “surge” in Iraq is working. The program, titled “American Commander: Gen. David Petraeus” and hosted by Jon Scott, will look at Petraeus’ “life and times.”
It’s bound to be “fair and balanced,” right?
allan_in_upstate @ 15
What are you smoking?
Evening, Suzanne, amiga!
allan_in_upstate @ 15
Minor edit…!!!
Evening all. “If The United States is indeed an Experiment in the Wonders of Representative Democracy,” I fear the experiment may have failed. Certainly no action taken in the halls of Congress this week, nor any in the White House for 6 years, can be said in any way to represent me.
I will not be silenced.
I will not be ignored.
I will not be beaten down.
marymccurnin @ 11
ditto.
Thers, just finished reading your wrap-up of the anti-war march last weekend. Good times! In particular, how about that crazy guy screaming in your face in the presence of little kids? ufb!
allan_in_upstate @ 15
They are slashing the deficit by cutting funding to school transportation for handicapped children.
That is not crazy. That is pure evil meanness.
Iran President Ahmadinejad Rips U.S.
from Huff Po by The Huffington Post News Editors
A day before flying to New York to speak directly to the American people, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad struck a confrontational tone Saturday with a parade of fighter jets and missiles and tough warnings for the United States to stay out of the Mideast.
Three new domestically manufactured warplanes streaked over the capital during the parade marking the 27th anniversary of the Iraqi invasion of Iran, which sparked a 1980-88 war that killed hundreds of thousands of people. The parade also featured the Ghadr missile, which has a range of 1,120 miles, capable of reaching Israel.
Suzanne @ 17
I like the short hair, but for me I find short is higher maintenance than long, and have been letting mine grow out. At least it’s long enough now to pony up and go.
Of all the GOP candidates, my contempt for Rudy is by far the most frigid & boundless.
in my book, McCain is now tied, after his comment to the effect that ‘we beat all you pussies who don’t love war’.
allan_in_upstate @ 15
Allan, you might want to lay off the mushrooms for a while.
TexBetsy @ 20
Gosh, all of these monkeys are making me sore.
THERS!! I just remembered it’s Saturday nite and that means YOU! (Gotta go back to cooking dinner, but wanted to say hi!)

SOP for the GOP
Hi Thers!
It was funny, actually. I was mostly astonished — “Uh, I have a baby on my back, sorry, I won’t trade f-words with you…”
madmommy @ 36
It was wide-left….!!!
marymccurnin @ 27
Oh yeah, a drain on the treasury that is!
LoudounLib @ 26
Yeah, I read that earlier this week. And they call us uncivil, unhinged moonbats? I have to say that you have better self control than I do.
Evening, all.
When I saw this little beauty over at TPM Election Central, I made sure to bookmark it so that I could share it with y’all, since it captures perfectly the essence of the Republican Party’s views on the First Amendment.
Thers @ 38
Gotta love those family values, though.
And what in the holy hell is up with Rudy taking a call from the wife in the middle of his flippity-flop with the NRA?
Suzanne @ 17
Hey Suz- see, the guys are experts in making judgments based on outward appearances, according to their own preferences. So, just fuckem (or not) ;) xxoooo
CTuttle @ 39

marymccurnin @ 27
Which aptly captures the Republican governing philosophy.
peanutbutter @ 40
Exactly. Didn’t have to do it. Must have been evil fuckery.
A particularly bad week for the democrats to be sure. I agree with Suzanne. MoveOn speaks for me, and gets my donation for the month. That’s what I’m doing, donation of the month.
Here’s an epu’d snip on Mukasey:
NYT Mukasey opinion.
Mr. Mukasey has attributes that could make him a good attorney general. He has been a lawyer and federal district court judge in New York, where he enjoys a good reputation. Although he is not divorced from politics (he is on an advisory committee to Rudolph Giuliani’s campaign), it is unlikely that he would run the Justice Department as an adjunct of the White House, or a booster of the Republican Party, as Alberto Gonzales did.
Aspects of his record, however, are troubling. As a judge, he was too deferential to the government. In the case of Jose Padilla, who was accused of participating in a dirty bomb plot, he ruled that the president may detain American citizens indefinitely as “enemy combatants.” His dangerously narrow reading of the Constitution was rightly reversed by a federal appeals court.
hey burnsie - email i sent ya in return bounced back - fyi

Good noches, Laura, Elliott, anyone I’ve missed…
PeteCO @ 19
I wouldn’t worry too much about keeping a supply of Astroglide on hand to ease their departure …
Hey LL!!
It was a very bad week for progressives and the country. The Democrats not only didn’t fight, they didn’t extract a cost from Republicans for their actions. Even worse they enabled the Republicans in doing what they did. A very bad week.
madmommy, hey!
madmommy @ 29
Personally, I am the reverse for self evident reasons.
Twain @ 21
I freebase the WSJ editorial page.
marymccurnin @ 47
There we go.
They’re not crazy bastards, they’re evil fuckers.

As fair and balanced as a documentary by Big Mitch on the American League East …

It has been a very dispiriting week to be sure. Any good news to share to lighten the mood?
allan_in_upstate @ 57
dood, that shit will rot your brain
Kim Kardashian will be appearing in Playboy. Good news for men at least…

Good evening Thers and all. Never mind Move On. When will the Gops “Move Out”?
Drove down to Fort Lauderdale this morning and just got back home. On the way down I caught Car talk first and then Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me and Paula Poundstone just cracked me up.
One of the questions was wrt Kerry & the tazer story. When asked what she thought of the event, she said “You know, I was just so damn glad I was late buying school supplies this year because I ended up picking up the “Don’t Taz Me Bro” pencil case, lunchbox and thermos set for the kids.
I would love to sign Jane up for that show. If you call 888-WAIT WAIT you can leave a message telling them a little about yourself and why you would like to be on the show. And, due to time zones and airing times, they will call you up and give you a date and you can participate.
Anyhow, what’s new today?
madmommy @ 62
Got 1/2″ of rain last night - and the blue velvet chaise on the deck (covered with a tarp) survived!
DrD? :: rubbing eyes :: was that YOU? Cool pic!
allan_in_upstate @ 57
Well, as long as you are not mainlining it.
woof
madmommy @ 62
It rained in Cali this week. That is always a miracle during the first few weeks of the rainy season.

That’s odd … let me speak to my NSA surveillance team and see if they know anything about it.

Can we get a new strength-demonstrating script for Dems, please?
How about one that says, “No more wars to force our viewpoint on the world! Timelines to withdraw our troops from the quicksand of Iraq! No timelines? No funding! No excuses! and I’ll go to the mat with anyone who says otherwise!”

VG, we all have our preferences, I certainly don’t hold it against an individual, in any way, shape, or form! I’m against abortion, but I certainly will not impose my dislike upon a woman’s personal decision! My wife certainly makes up my mind from time to time for me…!!! 8-)
madmommy @ 62
Well, I think I got it through my head today that the biggest problem in my life is that my current treatment for clinical depression isn’t cutting it. Maybe not good on the face of it, but at least it points to answers.
madmommy @ 62
Not really, when the first play from scrimmage was a TD!!! 8-(
Suzanne @ 71
Blue velvet doesn’t like rain much.
My little guy said “I love you” without prompting or help. He’s got a pretty severe speech delay, and I’d been able to get him to say it if I repeat each word for him. But today I dropped him off at granny’s and told him I loved him and he said it back. I get puddly just typing this.
raven @ 74
congrats
Hugh @ 54
Weren’t you impressed with Senator Gary Hart?
Do you think his essentially dimissive attitudes towards us are representative of the views of the leadership of the d’s?
I certainly do.
This one is good news.

The teenager just got back from five days with this organization, learning about the work for social justice in action.
I spent an hour yesterday with the local Women in Black. At 52, I was the youngest person there by a lonnnng chalk. I’m very sure our oldest member was in her 90s. (She sat in a lawn chair, a picture of dignity).
Not much newswise but….just the little doins’ of little folks doing those insignificant things that are so important to do….
madmommy @ 81
We moms are just pure mush. That’s so sweet.
LoudounLib @ 72
The one and only, but long before I was Dr anything. That is right after I pierced my ears at 19, the beginning of a dramatically misspent youth. Weighed about 85-90 pounds less than I do now (a strong wind could have blown me away),
madmommy @ 81
woohoo - oh this makes me smile - what a great big step - i’m getting all puddly reading it :)

LL, The Lurking Mod fixed it for you - refresh the page and all pretty :)
thanks LurkingMod and Suz :-)

Blackwater’s under investigation. Great news! If anything comes of it. At least it’s out there now. Far as I can tell, that’s the best/worst news of the week.
Congratulations Madmommy. That’s great news.

Bad week- but the dems didn’t ever have a chance in hell of passin any of the senate bills they were pushin- and they must have known it. Even if they had passed- dems couldn’t have overcome a certain veto. They’re right back where they started.
madmommy @ 99
Crossed in them toobz…
I likes the short hair, Suzanne. Makes you look like one tough mod!
burnspbesq @ 76
Suz, the email you sent me about five minutes ago with the header information from the first email made it through fine. Do you mind re-sending the first one if it’s still in your outbox or Sent Items?

And acutally, the real Raven our dear departed cocker, said woof too!
Loo Hoo. @ 97
Good point! That was a fascinating hearing btw
it’s only a start tho
Laura Doty @ 99
Yeah it’s pretty cool. He just made 4 but is barely speaking at a 2 YO level. Lots of speech therapy is helping. Everyone says they see a big improvement, but since I am with him every day it is harder for me to see the progress.
On a personal note, I fired up the smoker (probably for the last time this year), and smoked a brisket, pork shoulder, turkey breast, split chicken, and some pork neck bones. Keeping the freezer stocked with BBQ & smoked meat for the winter.

We’re down to 92 instead of 94 degrees for a high.

Are all your fires gone?
Thers @ 38
Bless you, Thers.
And I totally agree with your response to the wingnut.
The Authugitarian Right seems to have a thing for attacking fathers and the First Amendment.
Not to mention attacking the father of an American veteran slain in Iraq.
And stealing the father’s picture of his slain son.
I’m as non-violent as they come.
But not everyone on our side is.
Some are trained in martial arts; some have military training.
Some play rugby.
Time to plan for violent wing-nuts at large public gatherings. Ignore the crazies - deter the brownshirts. With enough muscly non-pacifist friends to make the deterrence really memorable.
MSM already abandoned the First Amendment under attack by the American Fascist Movement (ASM).
We won’t.
And when we see wingnuts hasslig parnets with kids at marches, we’ll do better at stepping up to protect them.
Some of the best medical care is preventative.

Wow, DrD — somewhere this weekend I’d heard about snow in the Sierras too. Just in time for the first day of fall!

Unfortunately not, though they have died down quite a bit owing to cooler weather and some rain. They will probably keep burning slowly until we get a good snowfall down in here the valleys. That won’t be for at least a month.

I pulled into my dad’s driveway today to drop off the kiddos and saw a Fred Thompson sticker on his Tahoe. Right next to the Bobby Jindal for governor sticker. I nearly barfed. Couldn’t help it, had to go in and give him some grief, not that it mattered. Made me feel better though.

ccmask @ 141
Do you know what kind of orchid it is? Sounds very interesting with six buds.
DrDick @ 149
Nice. Do you get snowed in at all?
I went to North Dakota last winter for a p*ker run in the winter on all terrain vehicles with about 50 people. I was so damn cold and filthy by the end of the day. And a little drunk. Each watering hole was about 10 to 15 miles apart. First time I had seen snow in about 12 years. Too cold for this Floridian.

Kirk,
That reminds me of an incident when I was in graduate school. It was during Raygunz misadventure in Central America and there was a peace march and rally organized by the VVAW. My wife at the time worked in the university library. A little frat boy who also worked there was talking about how he & his frat brothers were going to go down there and kick some hippies’ butts. She asked him if he knew who the Viet Nam Veterans Against the War were and he admitted he did not. She described a couple of our friends who belonged: an airborne ranger and a Green Beret, both decorated combat vets, both 6′ 4″ and 240 pounds. Oddly none of the counter demonstrators showed up at the rally.

OH, and did you hear the one about Mattel apologizing to the Chinese government for the *design defects* that led to the recent recalls?
Assholes.
Uh, guys, you can manufacture that shit — which no one will buy any more if its manufactured in China — at home. Maybe the increase in labor costs outweighs the supply-chain cost savings. But people will buy it if it’s marked “Made in U.S.A.” Better to sell it with a smaller margin than to not sell it at all, right?

And that’s tonight’s snack.
I blame all of the recent racism on Fox News and talk radio. They have resurrected racism and made a sport out of it. They spew their hate and and have been able to pull racists out from every dark corner of the country to play along. And they are the moral party. I always wonder if when they get older and go thru their scapbooks, they will shake their heads and say “What was I thinking….” Sort of like seeing your prom pic and wondering why you thought that dress was so great.

Actually, it is just the fruition of the GOP “Southern Strategy.” Now that they have the noise machine these ideas get spread far more widely than at any time since the early 60s. Pandering to the base amplifies this.

rock on, ydj!
since we’re
atover 150, here’s an epu about everyone’s favorite, DiFi:Hey pups -
Did you know you can take a dump in your neighbors’ lawns so toxic it costs $500 million to clean up?
And DiFi will give you back 80 times the damage you caused - if you just promise to clean up?
So the next time ELF burns down an apartment complex, I guess DiFi will offer them 80 times the cost of the arson - if they just promise to clean up.
After all, she’s an environmentalist.
DiFi, working to give 40 billion dollars of US taxpayers’ Federal water to 500 wealthy families… in secret discussions.
While Arnold calls the State Legislature back in “special session” for emergency discussion of two wholly unforseen new problems:
health care and dams.
That whole “LA’s living in a desert…we need water” thing just kinda dawned on Arnold late this summer.
While he was driving down Mulholland.
LA’s Metropolitian Water District…
the real power in SoCal…
the power of life in the desert…
the Lords of the Tap
…are smiling.
And north of the Tehachapis the
500 familiesLords of the Westlands Water District -The same Lords of The Westlands DiFi wants to give $40 billion in return for the half-billion they us, the taxpayers?
They want us to pay for them to raise Shasta Dam and drown the upper Sacramento, McCloud, and Pit Rivers
The Lords of The Westlands demand that all US taxpayers cough up the bucks for them to extend their siphons dicks up the length of the state to Mt. Shasta to do the dirty deed.
Talk about political juice.
Then the Lords of The Westlands can take the taxpayer-subsidized irrigation water from Shasta and sell it at market rates to land speculators and urban water districts in SoCal (where the twenty million people cry out for more sprawl and worse traffic).
Or just lease the rights.
Because - after the $40 billion handout from DiFi, the Lords of The Westlands need a handout, not just the land.
Yep, caught us all by surprise.
SoCal wants NoCal water.
Who knew?
Meanwhile, back at the slurpfest, the real rulers of California -
Big Ag, Big Land, and Big Water -
are seeding and subdividing and sprinking all over each other to the joy of their
littleunicellular hearts. The FederalWe citizens’Our water? The taxpayer-owned water from taxpayer-built public-owned Federal water projects?
The same water that DiFi plots to give to the 500 families…
can flow out of the same taps Ahhnuld just figured out need water.
So the whole “emergency” water bond isn’t needed - unless you’re Ahhnuld’s backers in Big Land and Big Water.
Gov. “Water! Who knew?” called an “emergency” session to push 9 billion of water projects (5.6 billion in dams) on California…mostly useless boondoggles producing 1,200 dollar/acre foot water.
Gotta make sure Big Construction and Big Finance get a slurp, too.
Bottoms up!

MoveOn has racked up over $1.5 million in donations since Thursday’s idiot vote. That’s good news.
yellowdog jim @ 191
Did you see where they have raised $1.5 million since congress passed the censure resolution? Maybe we can get them to censure FDL and Jane, Christie, TRex, Pach, and the crew can devote themselves full time to fighting the foul fuckery.
LL-can’t find a way to make some Flikr pix public and keep the rest private, so the linky is still a dud. I will ponder and attempt again tomorrow.
yellowdog jim @ 191
…and you can have the constitution, when you pry it from my cold dead fingers…!!! ;-)
Hi, I just logged in and am not sure what everyone is discussing topic-wise at this point. But did anyone watch Gwen Ifill last night and hear the discussion re: MoveOn? It made me not want to renew my membership to PBS. Sorry if I’m way OT
’s ok madmommy, thank you :-)
David, thanks!
A few nights ago I went to sleep and missed your kind note about your excellent post. I don’t have the url handy, but good work!
DrDick @ 198
What do you think they do now?
or maybe I’m just late and everyone has already commented
tpchi @ 200
There are no OTs in Late Night, or most of the rest of the time either.
Madmommy, it’s yet another example of “talk about my issue alla time or — j’accuse!” Except, as you pointed out, we are talking about it, right here, and have talked about it, including an on-the-scene report.
On a lighter note, my little brother didn’t talk until he was four. He’s got a Yale degree and a Harvard doctorate now.
DrDick @ 187
What do you want from people that look up to O’Falafel, Sean Insanity, Oxycotin Man and Glenn Beck? They are just slavishly following their heroes.
tpchi @ 201
Late night, 200 comments, you’re fine. I quit watching Gwen Landfill after her performance in 2004 as the Worst Presidential Debate Moderator Ever.
Or rather I should say that all off topics are on topic in Late Night. Did I tell you about my velociraptor?
Thanks Hugh

Gwen and her crew are pretty well dedicated to upholding the conventional wisdom in the Village, as Digby eloquently calls the inside-Beltway claque of commentators.
Since this thread is about current events, I wanted to repost this from this morning’s thread.
Do you know what got me this week? Bush asked the UN World Heritage Committee to take our River of Grass (The Everglades) off of the endangered list. No one knows why. Not even the State Department. (Oil Drilling or Big Donor’s Residential Developments??)
Everglades uproar brings change
A Senate hearing looks at how a U.N. list was altered.
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration has changed its procedures for trying to remove U.S. sites from a United Nations list of endangered special places after the Everglades was struck from the list this summer, a State Department official said.
Gerald Anderson, a deputy assistant secretary at the State Department, made the statement at a hearing held Wednesday by Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., into how and why the Bush administration asked the U.N. World Heritage Committee to remove the Everglades from its list of endangered environmental sites.
“We’ve assessed the reaction to the decision, and we understand there are some concerns that need to be addressed,” said Anderson, who admitted to being surprised that the Everglades was removed.
At a meeting in New Zealand in July, Todd Willens, a deputy assistant secretary at the Interior Department, persuaded the World Heritage Committee to take the Everglades off the list, despite recommendations to the contrary by the National Park Service and the committee’s science advisers.
Nelson said he wants Willens fired, something the Interior Depatment is unlikely to do. He fretted that any false suggestion that the Everglades is healthy, such as its removal from the U.N. endangered list, could sap political support for continuing the cleanup.

Even with cable, they’re are not many places to go for quality journalism. Exceptions include Olbermann, Jon Stewart and steven Colbert, and of course Amy Goodman, if you’re lucky enough to get her. It’s a sad commentary indeed that 2 of the best journalists in America are comedians.

This is proably a trivial point about human socialization, but tact and empathy help make alliances and recruit supporters.

Yeah, but Bill is just bill and everyone knows he’s crazy but he is so funny and Hannity is doing the Freedom Watch thingee for charity because he supports the troops and all because he is patriotic and Rush’s oxy was, after all, a prescription drug so it doesn’t count and he got his needed treatment and poor Beck because liberals just take his comments out of context.
Isn’t it something that every time something else happens we hear an investigation has begun but we never hear of one actually ending? What ever happened with Mark Foley? He squeeked pretty clean for a dirty boy.

Yes, the Everglades are the wetlands and they have been doinga massive clean up. And then yesterday, when I read that a Bushco scientist agreed it could come out of protection, I could,’t believe it. And as far as I know, the way it was delisted took people by surprise. I just found that last night and I have been gone all day but tomorrow I’m going to get into it. I’m sure nobody around here has heard of this development.

Hey Kirk!
Teaching, okay so far, so good. Dept. has new chairman hired from outside, so holding my breath waiting to see what comes down there.
I am so glad that the kittehs are enjoying the Equine Cat brush (Oster curry comb), and so glad that you succumbed to my pushing on that account. You not just trying to flatter me, right? Like, the kittehs really to love it? Yes?
And, always great to get students who give you the compliment of actually paying attention to what you say, and come back with good questions.
Did someone say Sweet Dreams?
Was there a topic?
Oh, yes. Wingnut Crap of the Week.
I just want to say that I am seriously disturbed about the “We LUVS us Gen. Petraeus, We HATES us MoveOn.org” resolution. Even after a couple of days, I can’t seem to get over it. What, 22 Democrats supported it? This is a serious assault on the First Amendment. Not only are they attempting to suppress free speach, they are attempting to suppress political speech–the most important kind, especially in these days of creeping fascism in our government.
I know I’m not saying anything new here. Just continuing to react to an ugly week in the USA.
(tpchi, you probably meant no harm but your characterization of cokie roberts is particularly ill-suited, given how her dad, Majority Leader Hale Boggs, died)
I do agree with you that PBS is longer overdue with commenter-change, however. perhaps their audience likes the continuity?
VG, good luck with the new Dept. chair.
Yikes.
And nope - no flattery - the kitties love, love, love their Oster curry comb. (Comb #1 has surfaced, too!)

You know I have no idea. NPR and PBS were supposed to be a breath of fresh air, new perspectives, but they quickly ossified into a bunch of traditions that once formed are allowed to go on forever. That explains cases like Shields and Brooks. But more generally, they bought heavily into the Beltway CW. This would be OK if that CW was independent and wasn’t essentially owned by the corporate media and leased out to the Bush Administration.
ccmask @ 183
I know a nice woman who used to be pretty level-headed, but no more. She listens to Fox News and tells me that the news I post to a debate club should be more “balanced.” I tell her no, it just has to be the facts.
Who, what, when, where, why. She really had no answer for that.
TexBetsy @ 308
well, last week or so Condi reported that she was making promise convincing the Chinese to agree to pressure the Burmese to stop being so evil.. she also took credit, in the same speech, for successfully convincing the Chinese to pressure the Sudanese to allow in int’l peacekeepers and for successully convincing the Chinese to pressure the North Koreans to behave on nukes. Dunno what any of this means, considering the source, but on the surface it sounds like that shrubcos effectively outsourced foreign policy as well as American industry.

Amount the war in Iraq costs per minute, according to a new analysis by Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz and Harvard’s Linda Bilmes, put out by the American Friends Service Committee. If this question has been asked, I apologize. Given that Thers says:
And given that he or she pretty much sums up my attitude, the question is: Is this the guy we want to run against? I think the answer is yes, but it may just be because I underestimate the ability of Dems to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. If you haven’t seen it already, you should read the article that appeared in The Nation (?) about Giuliani. The title was “A fate worse than Bush.”

I didn’t just wander in. I have been reading daily for months. My comment was curt and sarcastic. I apologize. I am so frustrated because this site and many other liberal blogs seem unwilling to have an extensive discussion about racism. I also read TPM, HuffPo, dailykos and crooks and liars. Don’t worry folks I won’t be dropping in again. Don’t be surprised if many black voters avoid this and other liberal blogs in the future.
