What a week! We are in dire straits indeed.
Our Congress—that we sacrificed so much for to elect in ‘06—speaks out boldly on habeas Iraq censuring freedom of speech. Bush says Hussein killed Mandela and Return on Success means it’s the troops’ own damn fault that we can’t bring them home.
But it’s not all storm clouds. The stupendous outpouring of support for the Jena 6, reported for FDL by Ben Chaneles, showed the nation and the world we will not suffer injustice silently. There was significant pushback against Blackwater in Iraq. Looseheadprop approves the judge who is up for Attorney General to replace the odious Gonzo.
And things are good at FDL. Look out world: Jane is BACK and taking names. Christy organized massive call-ins for habeas and for the Webb amendment. Senator Gary Hart came to listen to us about a range of concerns.
Let’s celebrate having the A team here: TRex, Pach, Siun, Howie’s continuing success with BlueAmerica, Phoenix Woman, Teddy, Eli, Tula’s series on labor, Donita, Ian, Swopa, Thers, Peterr, and RJ Eskow to name just a few of our talented folks. Several commenters noted that Scarecrow has been absolutely on fire this week. A shoutout to the backstage folks that keep things going smoothly for us. Our community continues to learn how to treat each other with kindness as we head into battle again and again.
We are in this for the long haul—marathon not sprint. It’s easy to see the obstacles and the dangers, but let’s also take time to celebrate how far we’ve come and the amazing community we are becoming. Leave the Fired O’Glake by the door for the morning battle, for tonight we dance!

It was a triple play.

EG!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivIv3VSAePg
Today I put all 5 of my Josh Groban CD’s on the player, cranked up the speakers to the point the bottom floor windows were kind of vibrating and I put most of the components together for my home office….. Singing to the music … boy was it theraputic!
Oh, my god. I’m so full…
I’m at my mother’s house down in south georgia. Ohhhh, the dinner we had. It was hours ago and I’m still creaking a bit at the seams when I walk.
And tomorrow I am actually going to church. For all the wrong reasons, of course. I have a crush on this one baritone in the choir.
His name is *Andrew*…
Hey egregious – kinda late where you live. Glad you’re in!
What’s this supposed to mean for diplomacy?
Got EPU’d so I thought I’d repost this:
OT, but of interest to us here at The Lake:
Snatched: Israeli commandos ‘nuclear’ raid
Plenty more “informed” speculation (propaganda?) in the UK’s TimesOnline article.
Hi Trex. Great to see you.

Round the little cottage by the creek in the redwoods, I crank up the Morrison Hotel/Hard Rock Cafe CD by the Doors.

I think it’s a case of the blind snubbing the naked. Or something.
TRex @ 16
what did mamarex fix?
egregious! what a great post, a great “round-up”. And, so many links! awesome.
egregious delivers some uncommon sense!
And her shoes! Oh my!!!
She and I cooked together and we made, um, meatloaf (my favorite, but only like my mom makes it), mashed potatoes, pinto beans, cornbread, macaroni and cheese, slaw, sliced home grown tomatoes, big pitchers of iced tea, and lemon chess pie for dessert.
Oof.
Soooooooo good.
Thanks, I rather like these shoes myself :)

And you are looking divine tonight, I might add.

Oh my. A comfort food OD if I ever saw one. ;-)
Snake Farm
We are southerners after all.
All that food was for five people, too. I’m taking sacks of leftovers back to Athens with me.
Who would have thunk it? Bill O. is a connoisseur of “soul food”…
(Coconut shrimp? WTF?) Check out the whole article at Media Matters:
O’Reilly surprised “there was no difference” between Harlem restaurant and other New York restaurants
Another red-soled-shoe post! Thanks, eg, you rock.
Hey Suz- do you still have that linky for mamarex’s mac and cheese? I saved the recipe, but not the link. A little bit of FDL history that should be mentioned… ;)
CD @ 34
R.E.M.’s manager was telling me about that Bill-O cultural field trip today. He was apparently amazed that black people can walk upright and speak English and everything.
Will the wonders never cease?
I believe that one could dance to this one, if one were so inclined.
The Neville Brothers, “Yellow Moon.”
EPU’d, but on topic I think (even if it is Late Late Nite and that doesn’t matter):
“I just want to say that I am seriously disturbed about the “We LUVS us Gen. Petraeus, We HATES us MoveOn.org” resolution. Even after a couple of days, I can’t seem to get over it. What, 22 Democrats supported it? This is a serious assault on the First Amendment. Not only are they attempting to suppress free speach, they are attempting to suppress political speech–the most important kind, especially in these days of creeping fascism in our government.
I know I’m not saying anything new here. Just continuing to react to an ugly week in the USA.”
But I’m glad egregious was able to put something of a positive spin on it all.
Hey TexBetsy, how’s everything?

Suzanne @ 46

neurophius @ 39
You’re right, of course. But on the other hand, I’d be happy to have Congress censure MoveOn every week if it meant that MoveOn could rake in $2 million in donations every time it happens.
Hey yellowdog jim!
Alright, gang, I just wanted to say hi.
I have to head off for bed so I don’t nod off during the sermon tomorrow.
And yes, it was the famous RexMama mac and cheese. We don’t make any other kind. That stuff in the box is for yankees and pikers.
Oh, has anyone seen bustedknuckles?
He apparently made lots of new friends at Donita’s Portland show.
TRex @ 50
Yankees and pikers? Isn’t that redundant?
haven’t seen him tonight, trex
Guys and gals, it is in fact late here.
Good night to all!

Meatloaf made outside the family is definitely an acquired taste.
People tend to be very particular about meatloaf.

thank you, Mr. billO, for setting us straight.
With this knowledge, I might even get to meet a black person someday.
Increasing spread of cholera in Iraq is due to insurgents using chlorine bombs. Did you know that 7000 Kurds have been infected?
It is going to hit the rest of Iraq soon. That is nasty…. really nasty and since they now do not have a public health system and any healthcare is pretty sparse … this could turn ugly
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/09/22/cholera-iraq/
Suz- thanks so much for that link above.
For anyone who did not follow the saga of the “revelation of mamarex’s mac n’ cheese recipe” it really was quite an epic drama. ;) Really.

IMHO, we have to make this a shibboleth: no private armies. No presidential candidate who fails to condemn Blackwater and their ilk gets our votes. If these guys come back to the U.S. without judicial restraint, we’re Chile.

There are enough of those minutemen nutcakes running around here…. it is getting cooler so their RV’s will be heading south and them boys will be setting up their petrols and stop themselves a brown invasion.
AND then we get to hear how those poor boys have to make do and pay for all their supplies ALL by themselves and NO ONE at the Minutemen group helps them when they see them getting thousands of dollars in donations. Those poor babies…
DrDick @ 93
to tell ya the truth, that’s precisely why I watch him every now and then. it used to be you had to tune into Rush or some other hate-mongering talk radio Nazi to get the trashy gems when can now find on the Factor.. it’s so much more socially acceptable to watch Faux for such gratuitous amusement, especially since TSA employees always tune airport waiting lounge TVs at Lindbergh Field to it, and I spend a lot of time waiting for flights there

Wow, Watching CNN’s special on the Jena Six, I wasn’t aware that the white student who was beaten, was expelled a month later for bringing a shotgun to school…!!! Hmmm…
I haven’t heard yet what they will do this year… there isn’t much action here when it is 110 but in a few months the nuts will start coming out of their caves and who know…. We also have that fine upstanding Sheriff Joe the single person who has cost our county MILLIONS of dollars in legal and settlements thinking he can enforce FEDERAL immigration laws all on his own.
It just isn’t minuteman season yet… funny how No More Deaths is out there year round and gets charged with being a coyote when they try to do a medical transport for immigrates found nearly dead.

By the way, whatever happened to those two young No More Deaths volunteers the shrubco Justice Dept tried to imprison for giving medical assistance to crossers?

We should avoid the sanitizing/neutral word contractor altogether. Taking a leaf from DeLay’s book, “mercenary” or “corrupt profiteer” should work in all cases, depending on facts.

You guys keep saying “Mukasey bla bla Bush” “Mukasey best we can hope for bla bla Bush.”
Stop looking backwards. Look at 2008. Mukasey with Gonzo’s powers. Mukasey with Giuliani ties.
We’re screwed. We’re screwed because very very few people seem to understand the power of the vote purge. Even fewer understand the power of the well-timed wrongful indictment. Amazingly, no one seems to understand the significance of Mukasey, with executive privilege, wiretapping anyone or anything BEFORE NEXT ELECTION.
That is why Giuliani will win in 2008. And while you are lamenting that loss, they’ll be moving on to the NEXT coup.
Look forward.

Game over.
Blub, you just created teh “Ancient Forest” word picture of the Blackwater militia.
In the Forest Wars, wonky ecologists and besotted tree-lovers came to press conferences talking about voles per canopy acre and sacred old-growth.
Outside of the Forest Wars, people heard “old-growth” and wondered if it was something they needed to find mirrors to trim.
A year or two before he died, David Brower came and spoke at the Environmental Law (ELAW) conference held at University of Oregon School of Law in Eugene.
One of the sweet aspects of ELAW (to be precise, PIELC, but everyone calls it ELAW) is you get to talk and dine with the speakers.
David Brower had been fighting the Forest Wars for one decade for each year of my (still) paltry involvement.
In a small group, his eyes sparkled as he told us “Ancient Forest” pulled at people’s hearts strongly enough to drag them into action.
Black Shirt forces action.
Repulsion.
Brilliant, Bliub – hoping for viral spread.
Blub @ 140
Has anyone seen a breakdown of the nationalities of these folks?
Earlier I meant to use the term “war profiteer”, not just profiteer (profiteering being a republican value). Pity our elected reps are too dignified(?) to seriously engage in the semantics wars. They’ve been whipped in every skirmish and emerge unembarrassed.

Hi demi
hi
I’m still here, but about to retire.

The U.K.’s Sunday Times reports:
The attack was launched with American approval on September 6 after Washington was shown evidence the material was nuclear related, the well-placed sources say.
They confirmed that samples taken from Syria for testing had been identified as North Korean. This raised fears that Syria might have joined North Korea and Iran in seeking to acquire nuclear weapons.
Israeli special forces had been gathering intelligence for several months in Syria, according to Israeli sources. They located the nuclear material at a compound near Dayr az-Zwar in the north.
I am sure you will all join me in saying thank you to the State of Israel.
http://rawstory.com/news/afp/I…..22007.html
Two weeks ago I reported that a friend of mine, back state-side from Dubai where he works on Islamic Terrorism for a well know think-tank, told me that we would be going into Syria before we ever went into Iran, and that all we were waiting for was an “incident” to justify the new war.
Methinks we’re cooking one up right on schedule.

Sleep well, firepups!

I am sure you will all join me in saying thank you to the State of Israel.
Nope. Just a little too convenient, and Syria, as I continue to believe, with a lot of Syrian blood in me, couldn’t find it’s ass with both hands and a flashlight.
I buy this the day ElBaradei confirms it and not before.
And why the hell should anyone applaud Israel for bombing a site where nuclear material was stored? Can you say “environmental disaster?”
I can’t believe President Bush is still railing about Hussein whacking Nelson Mandela. It’s old news by now, and he had the bastard hanged. Give it a rest, George.
Are you guys still here?
Tech,
What’s this about George still talking about Mandela? I missed it.
Demi-I was being snarky. He blathered at his last presser that Hussein assasinated Nelson Mandela, so I thought I’d have a little late night fun at his expense.
I saw the presser.
He’s so delusional. It makes me nuts that our leader is so strange.
I was listening to Rene M on NPR the other morning interviewing the French Foreign Minister and I just wondered why we can’t have a sane president.
By the way, you don’t work at Technicolor do you?
BigMitch @ 171
I am sure you will all join me in saying thank you to the State of Israel.
Hmm. Anybody wanna buy some aluminum tubes?
David Olsen @ 181
One can’t help noting that Israel introduced nuclear weapons in the middle east, making it inevitable that its neighbors will attempt to and eventually succeed in acquiring their own nuclear weapons, an eventuality that is in nobody’s best interest, especially not in the best interest of Israel.

1 800 ERI POSTE…..”Hello?”
The war keeps going on it seems the MSM has chosen Hilary and Rudy as the front runners.
The GOP base desperate for a win is holding their nose at Mr I use to be pro gun control, I’m waffling on abortion, I announce my divorce to my wife at a press conference. If they lose you know the Fundementalists are going to claim they lost because they supported someone they couldn’t believe in. They are going to claim Rudy lost because he and Mitt too for that matter will say anything to be elected.
I and many but not all of our base are not happy with the media picking Hilary lets leave some troops in Iraq, lets have a healthcare plan that supports the medical/ health insurance industry.
We want no troops in Iraq. We want a healthcare plan as good as France has not a second rate corporate welfare plan.
If we lose with Hilary it will be because she compromised! It will be because the Democratic leadership bent to Bush like the Weimar Republic of old.
We can’t win if everyone thinks that we are powerless, that we won’t fight for what we believe. That we wont fight for what the majority of people want!
A Hilary win is not a win for us unless once she gets power she goes back on her campaign plans and gets all the troops home and gets us a better healthcare plan than what she is now proposing.
Given the overwhelming support for both issues there is no reason to be a Rudy or Mitt, for her to say anything she has to get elected.
things come undone @ 189
I’m concerned that Hillary serves the same masters as Bush.
Any Democratic Presidential Candidate who wants to keep troops in Iraq risks turning off the base. They risk losing!
Why can Bush accept support from Swift Vote jerks who lie about Kerry? Why can Bush go to Bob Jones that Fundementalist school that doesn’t allow interracial dating.
But the MSM is accusing us of pushing the Democrats to far left! Funny how Congress started droping in the polls only after they caved into Bush on the war.
You don’t get numbers that low unless you lose the bloggers, the regular democrats and the independents.
I’m starting to think the Democratic party has been comprimised by Joe Liebermans who want the war to go on forever.
Wigwam@ 190 exactly and I’m giving the Evil Eye to all the Democrats who want to keep troops in Iraq. I’m thinking maybe its to late for this election but we do need to consider some primary challenges for Democrats.
Iraq concedes possible ’security vacuum’
egregious 1 800 ERI POSTE…..”Hello?” ok what does that mean?

yup. that’s why we get the kabuki…. most of them, imo, are trying to pretend to be anti-war when indeed they are not.
and that is why they are pissed at the grassroots and the netroots. because we see through their kabuki and are calling them on it.
kinda hard for them to keep up the pretense if their own supposed allies won’t let them.
that, in any event, if my current working hypothesis.
things come undone @ 194
Eriposte the blogger painstakingly untangled the set of lies surrounding the aluminum tubes that were part of the justification for invading Iraq.
So we need to call him/her and say there’s some followup consulting available.
things come undone @ 192
Siun has been trying to get straight answers out of candidates on the question of “residual troops.” IIRC, only Kucinich has given a straight answer. I did find an Edwards ad the seemed to be unequivocal for immediate and complete troop withdrawal, but I don’t think that his campaign has given Siun a straight answer yet. The same goes for Obama. So far I’ve not seen Hillary make any claim that she’d completely withdraw the troops, and she’s so deep into the pockets of the Lobby (google Haim Saban) that I doubt that she has any intention of complete withdrawal. In fact, she will not even take nukes off the table in going after Bin Laden.
Marcel Marceau, Acclaimed Mime, Is Dead at 84
New thread
Barron’s September 24, 2007 pg 59 no link subscription only
“1.6 million U.S housholds have already made the decision to relocate” to another country. “That figure has remained stable for a year and a half “. “Another 1.8 million are seriously considering relocation,” ” 7.7 million are somewhat serious. “
“Add it up almost 10% of U.S households plan on leaving.” ” The largest group that has actually made the choice to leave is in the households where the adults are 25 to 34 years old.”
It seems that Barrons a big part of Bush’s elite base if there ever was one has noticed that young people with money don’t seem to have any faith in Bush or the Democrats abilty to make things better.
Almost 10% of the population! The implications are scary.

Despair not my friends! Even though the Democratic Congress has suffered some setbacks this week, rejoice, the republican party is coming apart at the seams. They’ve written off the black and hispanic vote in the next election and possibly for all time; the white-wing-nut-religious-crazies will soon be the only ones left in the party with the top one-half-of-one-percent rich unless they get fed up and bolt for a third party run; a distinct possibility I believe.
And the topper; Nobody, but the Beltway Types, believe the republican party anymore. Ronald Regan’s ‘Shiny City on a Hill.’ A lie. People are finally coming around to the fact that their financial interests are not the same as those of the top-half-of-one-percenters; i.e ‘the haves and have-mores’ Most people are hanging on by their economic fingertips and they now know that anything they want or need from government will absolutely be decimated by republican rule. The old republican God, guns, Gays mantra just doesn’t have the magic it once had.
I think it’s the big HELLO moment for voters and the republican party. I believe in my bones that if trends continue, 2008 will be an electoral disaster of epic proportions for the republican party. And that’s something to be happy about on this nice fall day.
