Those around him have learned how to manipulate him through the art of flattery. Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld played Bush like a Stradivarius, exploiting his grandiosity. “Rumsfeld would later tell his lieutenants that if you wanted the president’s support for an initiative, it was always best to frame it as a ‘Big New Thing.’” Other aides played on Bush’s self-conception as “the Decider.” “To sell him on an idea,” writes Draper, “aides were now learning, the best approach was to tell the president, This is going to be a really tough decision.”
Bush appears to live in a world all his own. In the name of all that is holy let’s hope he insists on showing up at every GOP campaign stop in the country next fall, like the crazy uncle nobody wants at the wedding who gets instantly loaded and starts groping everyone and nobody knows how to tactfully disinvite but thinks he’s the life of the party.
That’s not just an asset. That’s priceless.

HOLA!
Hello Jane!
Missed it by THAT much!
Priceless. For everything else, there’s ActBlue
I wonder how Bush feels to know that when Rumsfeld was recently asked if he missed him, he simply replied “no”.
I’m hoping Blumenthal is wrong, but I think he’s right. I’ve had bosses like that, and they’re easy to manipulate. *sigh*.
I’ve been stumped since Nov 2000.
Ahem:
My bold. Is it AP spin? Or is it the truth? You decide.
peanutbutter @ 8
Bush is so toxic, Larry Craig would pass by his stall silently…
Yeah, Bush makes Mel Brooks’ character in Blazing Saddles look like a brilliant leader. Too bad Bush is surrounded by all those minions of Satan. Which explains the difference between that comedy and our current tragedy.
“Who would’ve thought a life long failure would turn out to be such a lousy president?”
one of my favorite signs, here:

(I whore my blog here so much, sometimes I forget to whore my homepage…. cardboard, paint and freeways people. Free Speech is what they gave us to save this country.)

“We gotta protect our phony-baloney jobs here!”
Thank you, Jane, for this post. You know, maybe things are not so bad, if a guy like Bush is on their side.
…Please tell me that “Camp Cupcake” is some kind of ironical re-naming on Blumenthal’s part?
Biodun @ 9
This is just ridiculous. It’s one thing for US to call them failed losers, but they can’t call our politicians that!
Of course I’m only half kidding. It’s another great example of the bias that just runs through the entire media. This story could just as easily been framed in a way that demonstrates the Republicans’ obstructionism, but I can bet it will almost universally be spun the way AP did.
Bush’s problem with language and thinking clearly:
At his bizarre presser yesterday, when he appeared to say “Saddam Hussein killed Nelson Mandela in Iraq,” what he realy meant to say was:
“If there had been a Nelson Mandela in Iraq, Saddam Hussein would have killed him.”
There. See George? It’s not that difficult really. But you just have to think clearly first.
The Blumenthal Piece and the Draper bio excerpt from Dead Certain should scare the living sh*t out of anyone with a functioning frontal lobe.
What the hell is it going to take to clean these criminals and killers out of the White House and replace them with less dangerous criminals?
The undertow is measurable, the tidal wave has to be coming!
OMG
Just listening to the speech in the car yesterday am was harsh enough. Then, like a fool I watched excerpts last night on KO.
I almost didn’t click that utube up there, but I’m so glad I did.
Great Song. Has my little toes atippytapping.
Thank you Jane.
One thing I haven’t heard anyone mention yet, maybe because there was So Darned Much Else to gag about, is that “My guv’ment…my guv’ment” burbling he was doing.
If it wasn’t a waste of my breath, I’d say, Please. Someone. Correct. Him.
As someone so eloquently said here a while back, and I’m paraphrasing, “I don’t want to vote for the evil of two lessers.”
My feeling exactly.
We all ready had a judicial coup in 2000. Will we be witnessing a complete military coup if these fucks try to go into Iran? Let’s hope so, because they sure are not listening to us.
Hey Jane…Good News “Bush raised a half a million dollars for Move On”
And this is just a little strange about this morning’s vote:
Dodd voting to block the bill–although he gave his reasons, and Hagel and Snowe voting for the bill.
Votus @ 21
What are you going to do vote for Kucinich? What else?
Biodun @ 9
It would only be a portion of the truth, at best. They could just as easily have written, “The Republicans successfully blocked all of the Democrats efforts to redeploy or bring the troops or any other anti-war initiatives.”
kathleen @ 19
RAID?
Well, I’m sure 500 to 1,000 years from now their tyranny will be a distant memory — even the might Rome eventually fell.
Of course that doesn’t do much good for those of us stuck here and now. I guess we’ll just have to keep up the fight for our American ideals.
peanutbutter @ 15
It’s what our troops themselves call the giant US air base (once, Saddam’s) where Bush landed (and never left). It’s been completely Americanized. You wouldn’t know you were in Iraq.
What I want to know is if Bush is so toxic, what is causing congressional R’s to hang together. I know it is
the devilCheney doing that, BUT HOW? What the heck is in that kool-aid?And even the 22 Dems who voted on that box turtle stoopidness. Who or what is keeping teh crazies together?
…

Meanwhile, Blackwater goes back to work in Baghdad:
Demi @ 20
Don’t tap your feet too much, I doubt you want larry craig to pay you a visit.
The Gop is holding on to its extereme postions on abortion, gay marriage, healthcare but those postions are not getting the press. We need to educate voters more on this. Our postions on less talked about/small issues will help in an election with high voter turnout which is guarnteed thanks to the war.
However I’m hopeful because the GOP is still holding up the war as their biggest policy difference with us. The war is their most unpopular postion just look at John McCain GOP voter’s choice as the most competent person to fight the war. John is struggling with the cash and may drop out soon.
Rudy has it right on Terror fear not continued War is the ticket.
It’s truly beyond me how can anyone even listen to and analyze that shit. In Bush, you might as well have a fucking parrot up there spewing random, memorized word clusters.
And Truman? Closer might be a comparison to a festering boil on Truman’s ass.
Biodun @ 9
It worse. They turned on their own.
Biodun @ 30
So much for Iraq as a sovereign nation controlling their own destiny and lands.
Just a suggestion. Folks are participating in small actions all over the country. Near a farmers market a mall. Remember stand on the sidewalk not in the street (unless you want to get arrested)

And yesterday, Hillary called Cheney Darth Vader on MSM. She’s been reading those leftist blogs–or maybe her staff has been. (I know Elizabeth Edwards reads FDL.)
I realize that we have as our president someone for whom documentation exists that he is a)not particularly intelligent, b) intellectually lazy, and a former(and perhaps current) abuser of alcohol and drugs such as cocaine. As someone who spent a year taking care of someone who went from being a reasonably “with it” 85 year old to someone whose language skills dropped over time to nearly zero, who did not make any sense, who made irrational and ridiculous statements, and behaved in increasingly unreasonable ways due to multiple infarct dementia, I’ve got to tell you, after watching recent live stuff with Bush…I have a real concern that what we are looking at here is a rapid slide into dementia. Now, we also have a VP whose cardiac condition is waaay over the red line, too but that is not my point. People who are in the throes of dementia cannot think straight, communicate in any organized or cogent fashion, and can behave irresponsibly. Yeah, like this is something new…
But, just as a point of info:
“Dementia develops when the parts of the brain that are involved with learning, memory, decision-making, and language are affected by one or more of a variety of infections or diseases. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, but there are as many as 50 other known causes…such as…
…Toxic reactions, like excessive alcohol or drug use.”

kathleen @ 24
Absolutely. I am going to show up at my Wash. State Democratic caucus on Feb. 9th and I’m going to vote for Kucinich. (Some states have primaries, others hold caucuses, which is what Wash. State Dems. decided to do.) I think there are two parties: the Money party and the People party, as David Sirota wrote about, and I am not about to throw away my caucus vote on a Dem. corporatist. Kucinich is a truth teller, and I’m sick of candidates who are less than forthcoming with the truth.
twolf1 @ 31
Wooooopsie. But, I don’t think I’m his type.
Thanks for the reminder, tho.
I’ll just narrow my stance abit.

MSNBC.com’s front page yesterday was all about “Norman Hsu, disgraced Democratic fundraiser.” 2 weeks ago, nobody had any idea who he was! Now, he’s the subject of banner headlines? (At least until the next cycle of OJ-related drivel.)
About the perfidy of the minority party, blocking efforts to give the troops well-deserved rest? Nothing.
About a certain Senator taking bribes? Nothing.
I don’t know why I even look at it anymore.

Here: Hillary calls Dick Darth Vader.
peanutbutter @ 15
Camp Cupcake is what the troops call the base that Bush visited. This is hard for civilians to get but, when it suits the administration, everyone in “theater” is in “combat”. In Iraq they call even big bases “Forward Observatiob Bases”. The people on the bases are called “Fobbies”. In Vietnam “we” were called REMF’s, Rear Echelon Mother f*ckers”. These are derisive terms that serve to keep the morale of that small percentage of troops that are actually in the “shit” up since, just like no one in this country is asked to sacrifice, the vast majority of troops are not really what grunts consider “In Harms way”. None of this means shit if you get hit by a mortar or and IED while driving your truck but it’s part of the “military mindset” and always will be.
Forgive my shitty sentence structure, I’m a GED grad!

You never know. Nixon’s thing was cottage cheese with ketchup. But to me, it begs the issue of – what if Bush is not merely stupid, stubborn, and venal? What if he really IS nuts? I mean, no one likes to call anyone “nuts” anymore – the whole alzheimer’s care movement wants to try to make it soooo much better by calling it a disease and so on, but as someone who has actually cared for someone with dementia, I can tell you – they ARE demented. And many times dangerous not only to themselves but to others as well. If he is, then we could end up with Herr Vader as the president – now wouldn’t THAT be special?

Clinton: I am not a lesbian
(but what about Hillary?)
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Sen. Hillary Clinton’s sexuality is not the most pressing issue on the presidential campaign trail, but it is likely to get a fair amount of attention on a lazy Friday in the nation’s capital.
The Advocate asked Clinton about past rumors that she is gay.
The New York Democrat tells “The Advocate” that she is not a lesbian, according to a story in Friday’s edition of The New York Daily News.
“It’s not true, but it is something that I have no control over,” Clinton tells the magazine in a story set

Oh yea, swindled them into letting me in the University of Illinois with 10 days between Nam and the first day of school. A short 9 years later I got my undergrad in Recreation. Masters in the same at UGA and, after 20 years trying to convince parents to let their kids alone and enjoy playing sports, I went into the doc program in Adult Ed. Did my dissertation on. . .the GED!
Further to my 86:

And for the second time, I have changed my political registration, this time, following yesterday’s Senate vote.
No more Democrats for me please, I’ll gladly give to non-profits from here on out, not another penny to any Democratic party establishment. I am once again officially registered as “no preference”, because in California you can’t register as an independent. The first Governor Brown thought registering as an “independent” meant you were a communist, so you have to check the box “no preference.”

Stop Blaming the Idiot!
It’s not Bush who is at fault. It’s the spineless creatures we have in Congress who allow this psychotic child to continue driving the ship of state. If you needed to drive a long distance would you put your 5 year old behind the wheel of the car and then blame him for crashing? I don’t think so.
We, and that includes all of Congress, know that Bush is incompetent. Yet, they allow him to continue driving. So I place the blame on the adults who should be fixing a dangerous situation. Only problem is, they don’t want to fix it.

I did too. Felt good. Also sent a stinging letter to my senator, Ken Salazar. I’d like to see them raise another half million today.
“George, I think you’re the best damn warmongering asshole in the White House and the American people have a wonderful new idea for you to resign and take your other assholes with you! Isn’t that great, George? What do you think? Should we try it today?!”, said Kay to George after buttering him up with a pan of freshly baked brownies.

I think his was an honorary from Temple. In GED circles the “Bill Cosby” effect is someone who does not study but just takes it and passes. My research participants were all folks who had gone through some kind of adult literacy education before taking their tests. It was an important distinction for me to make in my work since I interviewed them and they knew I had a GED as well. It certainly impacted the way they related to me.
Flip flop anyone?
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani on Friday said Americans’ right to own guns is as important as free speech in remarks to a powerful gun advocacy group that has long viewed him with suspicion.
Giuliani acknowledged his differences with the National Rifle Association, a group he once referred to as “extremists.” As New York mayor, Giuliani initiated a lawsuit against U.S. firearms manufacturers.
“You never get a candidate you agree with 100 percent,” Giuliani told an NRA convention in Washington, then chuckling, “I’m not even sure I agree with myself 100 percent.”

Sept. 20, 2007 – Imagine a universe where a man can gun down women and children anytime he pleases, knowing he will never be brought to justice. A place where morality is null and void, and arbitrary killing is the rule. A place that has been imagined hitherto only in nightmarish dystopian fiction, like “1984,” or in fevered passages from Dostoevsky—or which existed during the Holocaust and Stalinist purges and the Dark Ages. Well, that universe exists today. It is called Iraq. And the man who made it possible is George W. Bush.

Bush is a classic shitty executive. Some of the qualifications include:
1) Picks people for reasons other than competence.
2) Has no normal project assingment/review process. Shit just happens- or doesn’t.
3) Has no ability to dig into an issue to discover how to approach it so that it gets fixed- can’t do problem solving.
4) Cannot lead a group process which ends in a clear direction that represents the best thinking of the group.
5) Cannot deal with conficting advice- just flips a coin.
etc.
He has NO skills to be president- NONE- no expertise- no executive ability- no leadership skills- nada..

I would suggest that the professional politicians otherwise known as Members of the United States Congress (and their staffers) expose themselves to the opinions of the people of this nation long enough to take a look at the grim faces of the aggrieved American citizens who faced the Senators at the Democratic Policy Committee hearing today, 9/21/07. A hearing called so that those whistle-blowing citizens could testify about the reality – not the fiction, not the fantasy, not mere Senate play-acting with imaginary board games that allow them to experiment with redrawing the national boundaries of other nations, the reality – of what “our” American Executive Branch of government has become at its highest levels: an untouchable criminal organization – whose lawlessness, viciousness, recklessness and human rights abuses of its own citizens goes unchecked, unchallenged, and mostly unreported and unmentioned, especially by members of what used to be our separate and independent Legislative Branch of government.
For reasons like this:
#17 under the Senate at http://thomas.loc.gov/r110/r110.html
Play-acting. That Carl Levin/Jack Reed amendment vote this morning ended up tied at 47-47. That bill was designed to begin to end our occupation of Iraq. Or was it? If it was, and the margin for a majority was that close to being reached, why in the name of what remains of American humanity and sanity did bill co-manager Carl Levin help arrange its defeat by agreeing the day before to meet a 60-vote margin for passage, without even requiring a filibuster to be exerted (which would at least have ensured some decent time for actual, meaningful debate before this vote took place) – on his own amendment, no less??
As Michael Hirsh so very, very rightly points out in his Newsweek column linked this morning by Scarecrow:

Guilty until proven innocent. The same mindset displayed (in his recent op-ed) by the man nominated to become the next Attorney General, as far as those unilaterally “detained” (”obtained” by unclear means is more like it) by our now-lawless Executive Branch that effectively controls our Armed Forces. A lawless and unrestrained administration that is squandering hundreds of BILLIONS of our tax dollars and debt, because our federal legislators find the Constitution a drag on imperial role-playing in the Senate, and a drag to enforce on an undemocratic, dishonorable, openly-hostile Executive Branch leadership. Executive Branch and administration leadership that contemptuously abuses the American people and our federal treasury while lying to us with impunity, and that violates the inalienable human rights of those of (certain, stereotyped) non-Christian faiths with an entitled, arrogant, depraved and savage “guilty until proven innocent” systematic approach to ensuring injustice is done in the name of the American people and our nation.
The vast majority of this behavior could never have occurred, the vast majority of the destruction and the damage and the death would have been prevented, if only our Legislative Branch of government had honored the Constitution its members swore to uphold, in word, in deed and in the spirit of those who authored it to prevent the very horrors of unbridled greed of empire that have now descended, absolutely predictably, upon our nation. A nation which was intended to proudly and honorably hold the high ground of a Constitutional, democratic Republic. But our federal representatives chose not to hold that high ground and to live in peace except when forced not to by others and at their own, sole discretion [Article I, Section 8, Clause 11], and thus they have failed to keep our Republic intact as they hide behind a shabby fronting facade of a federal legislature that barely rises to the critical thinking level of a mediocre High School debating club.
Whether or not those “overwatching” intend it or not [although the available evidence - evidence that’s apparently invisible to our Members of Congress and the official media - would seem to suggest they do], the disintegration and violent fragmentation of Iraq is happening under our watch. This despite the fact that 98% of Iraqis polled disagree with the concept of an Iraq divided along sectarian lines:

Our Founders would be horrified and appalled at the state of our nation today, and would be enraged and heartsick at the desecration of the union with its enshrined liberties and rights that their sacrifices wrought, and that was held together and improved by so many of those who followed them, especially during our Civil War and during the earlier parts of the last century. Today’s Members of Congress couldn’t care less.

Gaming the IRS…a Republican tradition.
Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard, fyi.
Sandman @ 147
So what?
The person at 143, got it wrong, no biggie.
pow wow @ 145
Can I vote for you?
So Bill Gates: no Harvard degree
George W. Bush: he GOT that MBA.
Why did Bill Gates cut and run before finishing the mission?
Badwater @ 148
We were having a conversation about dropping out. That ok with you?
Mr. Bush is a madman. He is trying to convince the world that the U.S. is filled with nothing but kill crazy animals.
adie@136
i do get frustrated by the cowardice of the dems…but i do what i can in my small way for my grandchildrens sake…but i am soo tired of dems letting me down on every turn it gets harder to hang in i know….

And still, impeachment remains off limits according to the Speaker.

Saddam consulted us before he invaded Kuwait back in the day and we gave him the green light too.
Somehow I don’t think Israel will get the same treatment though… just a hunch.
SufiLizard @ 161
lol!
juslin @ 167
And perhaps vice-versa.
Tithonia @ 170
I’ll resist the urge to go on a Joe Pesci “so I amuse you? so you think I’m a f’in clown?” bit now, but it’s tempting.
Badwater @ 156
Hard to interpret isn’t it? Now if Quaker Girl says “So what” you figure she meant “So. . .what”. Badwater says the very same thing and it comes across like “Yea, so what”. And then if Adie said, “Is that ok with you” we all figure she means, “Oh, is that ok with you”. But raven must mean, “Hey jerk, why you buttin in here when we have been talking about this for 30 minutes”.
New thread: Oh Mickey You’re So Fine…
now US is quashing free exchange of ideas on a college campus….we have become ussr in oh so many ways….

Commenting is difinitely an art like playing the piano. Anyone can play the same notes, and have entirely different tone. Wild.

“In 2003, University of Lausanne theology professor Thomas Römer received a telephone call from the Elysée. Jacques Chirac’s advisers wanted to know more about Gog and Magog … two mysterious names pronounced by George W. Bush while he was attempting to convince France to enter the war in Iraq at his side.”
Is there anyone who still believes this man has an ounce of sanity left??
SufiLizard @ 11
BLIND OPTIMISM
I tend to think of George W. Bush as the Ed Wood of presidents, and we’re forced to watch his “Plan 9 From Outer Space” again and again and again. The one difference being Rudy Giuliani playing the lead role in “Glen or Glenda.”
The manipulation tactic Sidney Blumenthal alludes to is seduction. For more info on all of the manipulation tactics, check out the book “In Sheep’s Clothing: Understanding and Dealing With Manipulative People” by Dr. George K. Simon.

Since most Americans barely have the intelligence of a lemur and the attention span of a gnat by Nov. of 2008 they will be on board the Republican Values Express. Next stop, oblivion.
To add the the “stumping” catch alittle of The Newshour to hear about the fraud and sleaze in the provision of equipment for the troops we are all to honor. Just bargain and cheat their equipment as long as the fat cats are gettting rich and jobs.
I know exactly what you mean by the guy who knows he’s unwelcome but keeps posting his rantings and ravings so that everybody can read him anyway. (Cleveland doesn’t hide his posts the way we do in Philly, but it’s the same crap everywhere). Sure would be nice to get him to shut the hell up, but we’d have to go to an approved-posts-only system as opposed to the present open publishing system.
raven @ 173
hey guys. i just got the toobz back (my turn ;->), & stumbled headlong into yer gripin. i can’t begin to tell you how frustrating it is to be ignored, or attacked for the wrong reasons, or??? I’m still waiting on responses from some regulars goin’ back weeks, no. months. obviously not worth steaming over or even remembering, much less holding my breath. I always hated the idea of sororities in school. Hated it that each individ. couldn’t be accepted on his/her own terms. It just happens. In a blog population numbering in the 10’s of thousnds, with “facebook” to help people with like interests to “clump”. It’s a hard job to satisfy all.
Stick around. Don’t you DARE leave this place.
‘kay? (Hint: if some concern of yours was not answered, poke the idea back in the channel again. It’s hard for people to respond to everything all the time – they might have missed it.)
And, don’t believe everydangedthing you see on the news about prevailing attitudes in the country. Right now there seems to be a whole lotta parroting of johnny-on-the-spot repubblekan talkin pts flying past our noses.
Puleeze don’t blame ALL Dems, ALL-a damtime. I’m 66 in 2 days (woo hoo), & I have no doubt you’ve endured far more than I in some realms. We.Need.Eachother. In my personal experience, I’ve never seen things worse than now, a party more driven to do whatever they can to stay in power and enrich their own, in the face of whatever element of the universe they might perceive as threatening their personal plans – on any level, no matter how petty their own desires, or urgent the needs elsewhere.[imho, the rebubblecans as a party have lost their collective compass, any hint of compassion, yadda yadda… stone cold of heart & out for self gratification of a type that would embarrass a kid in the 6th grade.
Stay.Tough. Stay.Open minded. Stay.Skeptical. STAY OPTIMISTIC enough to put one foot in front of the other. Puleeeze be extremely reluctant to tear down your peers, and members of the Democratic Party. Listen to them.
MakeEnable them to listen to you. It helps mightily to figure out where they are coming from. That’s a start.imo, FDL is the best shot you’ve got. Don’t be afraid to help the community here to understand your concerns. They’ve been working steadily ever since I can remember, to improve the accessibility of discussion and convenient links, etc. for everyone.
Gotta go for now, and probably epu’d before i got outta the starting gate, but don’t you lose heart or go away. ‘kay?
Bluetoe @ 181
you got yer front-row tickets & lawn chair all lined up ready to go, have ya? that should be a comfort. you might want a book or 2 in the meantime. have a look around. see anything ya like? take a g-o-o-d look. what d’ya suppose you might be able and willing to do to save it?
Might not be a good idea to stand in front of that Rebubblekan X-Press train. I think the engineer’s on holiday, mebbe gone pfishin.
p.s., suspect even lemurs aren’t as stoopid as you suggest.
No Jane, he is in a world of his own. I am appalled that this loser is the so called “President” of these United States..
What’s our options? Cheney? Hell, he’s been bending the shrub over since 2000… When will we get it right?
