PS — Oh, and “God,” if I can be so bold as to call you that since you styled your complaint answer in that way, “St. Michael the Archangel” was a nice touch.

Hello Christie!
I’ll be back in a little while….
So is everyone downstairs?

Thats hysterical.Who says God doesn’t have a sense of humor?
Good to know that Congress is ever vigilant against citizens groups. Lord knows we need protection from name calling.
Katymine! How ya doing this AM?
You guys trying to sneak away? It won’t work!
I called them from downstairs.

Racism and flags struck a serious note – still in discussion.
Using another computer is really clumsy. Can’t get it under control. Maybe I should go work in the garden. I know what I’m doing there.
I don’t do so good with God. Never liked him; still don’t. I have my own ideas about the Light within and it ain’t God. Sorry, if this offends anyone.
And I don’t like flags and uniforms either. Nor do I say the pledge to the flag. I find symbols in general are offensive. That includes the peace symbol. The peace symbol begins to represent peace imperialism. Sorry Code Pink but I really don’t like your use and abuse of the peace symbol. Symbols degenerate.
I need some dark chocolate.
OT Just received this from Move On. I was curious of the impact of our recent donations:
Dear MoveOn member,
Yesterday, an amazing thing happened. After the Senate’s shameful vote, and after President Bush called MoveOn “disgusting,”1 our email started to fill up with messages like this one:
I’m currently in Iraq. I do not agree with this war, and if I did support this war, it would not matter. You have the RIGHT to speak the truth. We KNOW that you support us. Thank you for speaking out for being our voice. We do not have a voice. We are overshooted by those who say that we soldiers do not support organizations like MoveOn. WE DO.
YOU ARE OUR voice.
And then came the donations. By midnight, over 12,000 people had donated $500,000—more than we’ve raised any day this year—for our new ad calling out the Republicans who blocked adequate rest for troops headed back to Iraq.
The message from MoveOn members was loud and clear: Don’t back down. Take the fight back to the issues that matter.
So today we’re shooting for a very ambitious goal: Reach $1 million so we can dramatically expand the campaign we launched yesterday going after politicians who support this awful war. Can you chip in $100 toward our goal?
https://pol.moveon.org/donate/mcconnell.html
All day, messages from vets and military family members kept pouring into our email, many of them aimed at the Senate:
I have given a son to this country. My brother, my father, my uncle have all served honorably and bravely. I am a loyal American. I am outraged and sick to death of the tactics this administration uses to try to silence dissent to a war that is unjust, built and maintained on lies, political power, and greed. I was content to let others fight more loudly, but no more.
–Sharyn W., NC
I am a prior soldier who served in Iraq for 13 months, and am now an expecting mom with a husband who is deployed in Baghdad. I don’t think I can ever forgive the Bush administration for the lies that tricked America into this war and hurt my family so badly. I am ashamed of those American politicians who would condemn an organization for practicing the Freedom of Speech that so many soldiers have died for.
–Danielle B., OH
As a US Navy veteran and an Iraq war veteran of over a year I want to ask, What has happened to us? What has happened to our voice? Where is this country going with stopping free speech and free press? … Every time I think of the long nights I had in Anbar remembering what I was fighting for, well here it is….
–Ahmad H., LA
These folks have made sacrifices many of us can’t imagine. Their charge to us was clear: keep speaking the truth about how President Bush and the Republicans have betrayed our trust.
So we’re going to expand our ad campaign—keep it on the air longer and run it against other politicians who helped block adequate rest time for our troops. Can you chip in $100 to do it?
https://pol.moveon.org/donate/mcconnell.html
And still the messages kept coming …
I’ve had three nephews serve since 2002, one of whom was killed in Anbar Province. I have a fourth nephew at Quantico training. I want this war over before he is deployed and before any more of our soldiers are sacrificed.
–Michele R., NE
Three members of my family are military. Two Marines have served in Iraq and an Army Lt. is deploying in November. If we had all spoken out when the administration used General Powell perhaps we would not be in this mess.
–Carol B., PA
As a Marine I served for many reasons but one of them was to allow people the freedom of speech, whether I agreed with it or not. Wearing a uniform does not mean someone isn’t a shill, is spewing propaganda, and downright lies. MoveOn has every right to buy an ad and say what they want about a public figure. This administration has lied to us, deceived us, misled us and when posed with a challenge this is how they respond?
–Keith G., VA
The Senate won’t pass a policy to end the war or even to make sure our troops in the field have enough rest time between deployments, but they hold votes to crack down on millions of Americans who are upset about the war?
Well—it isn’t going to work. We put together a hard-hitting ad that highlights how Republicans failed our troops and if we can raise enough money today, we’ll air it across the country. Please help if you can:
https://pol.moveon.org/donate/mcconnell.html
For all of us on the MoveOn staff, this week was a bit of a rollercoaster—MoveOn was attacked by nearly the entire Republican party, while too many Democrats ran for the hills. But what kept us going were messages like these—and the incredible privilege we feel to serve all 3.2 million Americans in MoveOn.org.
When the story is written of how the Iraq war ended, you will be the heroes. Thank you.

“There’s a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you. I been sayin’ that shit for years. And if you ever heard it, it meant your ass. I never really questioned what it meant. I thought it was just a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherfucker before you popped a cap in his ass. But I saw some shit this mornin’ made me think twice. Now I’m thinkin’: it could mean you’re the evil man. And I’m the righteous man. And Mr. 9mm here, he’s the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or it could be you’re the righteous man and I’m the shepherd and it’s the world that’s evil and selfish. I’d like that. But that shit ain’t the truth. The truth is you’re the weak. And I’m the tyranny of evil men. But I’m tryin’, Ringo. I’m tryin’ real hard to be a shepherd.”

Sammon has written four books on Bush, enjoying a close relationship and unprecedented access. His bio for speaking engagements brags:
Six-foot-seven inch Bill Sammon–nicknamed “Superstretch” by President Bush–enjoys more access to the commander-in-chief than any other journalist. Sammon has spent hours with Bush in the Oval Office, aboard Air Force One–even in the President’s sprawling Texas ranch. As Senior White House Correspondent for the Washington Examiner, Bill Sammon travels with Bush wherever he goes and was with him on September 11, when his presidency was utterly transformed by the terrorist attacks.”

There was an incredible line of questioning by Dorgan of the young man who was held 97 days. The questioning laid it out that our government is holding US citizens and depriving them of any rights. Dorgan methodically got it on the record. It was brilliant. I kept thinking…he’s thinking of impeachment..

LS @ 63
This is what Center for American Progress had to say about media reporting this morning:
This week, a bipartisan majority of the Senate voted to restore the right of habeas corpus to detainees, grant the District of Columbia full voting representation in Congress, and mandate that U.S. troops receive at least as much time at home as they are deployed. But facing strong opposition from the White House, the measures narrowly fell short of the 60 votes needed to overcome the Republican leadership’s filibusters and will not move forward. Instead, conservatives spent the week defending the Bush administration and condemning a New York Times ad. The media largely billed the defeats as Senate “rejections” of the measures, failing to highlight the conservative obstruction.
http://www.americanprogressact…..ressreport
Matt Lauer on the Today Show this morning said the MoveOn.org ad will trigger a backlash against the Dem presidential candidates…
No surprise there. And he and Tweety keep having that stupid and annoying Laura Ingraham on as a guest. She’s been promoting her equally stupid new book.

Colin Powell, no longer the loyal soldier, rises up to help stop conservative hard-liner John Bolton from becoming U.N. ambassador.

During the John Bolton nomination hearings I read rumors that the reason Senators Biden, Chaffee, Kennedy, Kerry and others were continuing to demand (and clearly furious) the NSA intercepts that the Bush administration and John Bolton were refusing to hand over. I watched those nomination hearings many Senators looked extremely worried and pissed off.
The rumor went that the NSA (John Bolton)had secretly been taping Colin Powells quiet negotiations with Iran. And that via that taping undermined those negotiations. Also “Supposedly” some link to the classified intelligence about Iran passed from Franklin to Rosen/ Weissman to Israeli officials that also undermined those negotiations.
Not sure whether the Bush Administration ever released those NSA intercepts

There is a hint within the message – the Light within. Also, Quakers use and display no symbols and that includes the flag and pledges. There are no doctrines but there are practices. We practice non-violence. There are no authority figures. Titles are not recognized. Technically, they don’t vote and do notrecognizemajority rule butagreeby consensus.Political voting is leftto the individual.Othersare like meand are politically active.Outside oftheMeeting forWorshipthey recognize theneedtoserveworldly needsthus the American Friends Service Committee, Friends Committee on Legislation (lobby for social justice, non-violent means to a political conflict, etc.) A keypractice is non-violence.
I confess I am not a “weighty Quaker” and must deal with feelings of anger, fist shaking, name-calling. I sincerely make an effort in practicing a firm but kind way to deal with issues. We are all individuals and some Quakers feel a need to address God. Some Jesus. Some are also practicing Buddhist.Mostly, you will hear “the Light” or to be “filled with the Light”.
Hope this helps.
Here is a bit about the intercepts. This is Sidney’s article about Powell
“The Bolton confirmation hearings have revealed his constant efforts to undermine Powell on Iran and Iraq, Syria, and North Korea. They have also exposed a most curious incident that has triggered the administration’s stonewall reflex. The Foreign Relations Committee discovered that Bolton made a highly unusual request and gained access to 10 intercepts by the National Security Agency, which monitors worldwide communications, of conversations involving past and present government officials. Whose conversations did Bolton secretly secure and why?”
During these hearings I thought Biden, Kerry, Dodd and Lincoln Chaffee (who was fuming) were going to jump on Bolton and beat the piss out of him.
Twain @ 94
np! Someone posted it on late late night last night.
Very cool, and you obviously are encouraged to ask a lot of questions. *g*
So worth the read or re-read
http://dir.salon.com/story/opi…..index.html
“Staff members on the committee believe that Bolton was likely spying on Powell, his senior advisors, and other officials reporting to the secretary of state on diplomatic initiatives that Bolton opposed. If so, it is also possible that Bolton was sharing this top-secret information with his neoconservative allies in the Pentagon and the vice president’s office, with whom he was in daily contact and well known to be working in league against Powell. If the intercepts are ever released, they may disclose whether Bolton was a key figure in a counterintelligence operation run inside the Bush administration against the secretary of state, resembling the hunted character played by Will Smith in “Enemy of the State.” Both Republican and Democratic senators have demanded that the State Department, which holds the NSA intercepts, turn them over to the committee. But Rice so far has refused. What is she hiding by her coverup?”

This morning Renee Montagne interviewed France’s new foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner. He clarified his statment about Iran which he says was misunderstood….some might call it manipulated or “cherry picked”
He is a somewhat unlikely diplomat. He began his career as a physician and activist. He’s a co-founder of the group Doctors Without Borders and was fond of dramatic actions — like chartering a cargo ship to rescue Vietnamese boat people. It didn’t hurt his reputation as a maverick four years ago when he championed intervention in Iraq to topple Saddam Hussein. This week, the foreign minister has gotten in trouble for some undiplomatic language — saying the world must prepare for possible war when it comes to Iran because of its refusal to suspend nuclear activities. But Kouchner says he was misunderstood. In advance of a meeting in Washington with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, he placed France firmly on the side of the U.S. in calling for even tougher sanctions against Iran. Kouchner speaks with Renee Montagne.

Thank you for this information. This is a pathetic state of affairs, but maddeningly not surprising.
“Mr. Dodd appeared to be trying to determine whether Mr. Bolton’s requests focused on any particular subject area or official, and what use he might have made of the information. Unless it gets a warrant from a special court, as in cases of suspected terrorists, the agency is not permitted to identify as a deliberate target an American citizen or permanent resident for eavesdropping. But its global eavesdropping net regularly picks up communications involving Americans, including phone calls, faxes, e-mail messages and other communications.
Intelligence reports circulated by the agency within the government do not normally include verbatim transcripts, but do sometimes reveal what an American official had been heard to say, according to former intelligence officials.
Under the rules, the names of ordinary citizens generally must be removed from any report of the intercept, with the phrase “U.S. person” substituted. But there is an exception for “senior executive branch officials,” including ambassadors and dozens of senior State Department officials, who may be identified in reports by their titles.
The procedures are set out in a document called “U.S. Signals Intelligence Directive 18.” Though the document was originally secret, an edited version was released some years ago, along with documents interpreting the rules.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04…..;position=
Clearly, clearly, clearly they have been illegally spying on Congress. Clearly, this is blackmail. That must be why everything is so screwed up.
Some legal types should review this document that McConnell wrote about spying back in 1993 – in the context of what is going on with the FISA bill now:
http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/N…../07-02.htm
This is Intelligence Directive 18.

He’s old and horribly biased. And our Americans are dying because of his complete agreement for all things pro-war, resulting from his pro hard-line pro right-wing Israeli and American policies.
I sincerely hope his district looks around for a more balanced foreign policy candidate.
