Well, the President,
He’s got his war,
Folks don’t know just what it’s for.
Nobody gives us
Rhyme or reason,
Have one doubt,
They call it treason…
File this one under songs my mother taught me as a child that are still wildly relevant today.

I’ve been having trouble adjusting to reality this evening. I have just came back from three days in the wilderness and I seem to have temporarily lost some skills.
I only got it ’cause LouDou went to bed…
TRex @ 13
I came in on the end and got myself into trouble quick.
Liss @ 17
Ah, but the skills you gained? Priceless!
Mary, I think you try to get into trouble just so I can chastize you (wink)
Awesome choice, TRex. I wore out two vinyl copies of “Swiss Movement.” The first jazz album I ever bought with my own money.
I went back to read Late Late Nite from last night to see what happened.
Kirk Murphy and Althespook got into a detailed scientific discussion on global warming and disagreed about whether things will be bad, or monumentally bad.
That’s all I could decipher anyway. I hope they both return.

The calm and peace that I found, even if only fleeting, are beautiful things. Three days, two nights, completely on my own, in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. I saw a total of 10 people, only one of whom was camping up there and three were trail crew. It was incredible.
I’m just happy to be here at Late Late Nite and things are calm here.
I was going to see the Donnas and Donita Sparks in Portland tonight, but my old house and it’s plumbing had other ideas. Everything’s fine, now, but it’s been an ugly afternoon/early evening.

Benny Bailey? YouTube has that.
ct, mission creep is a good term – that is exactly what it is – and what the rethugs want – us to be bickering amongst ourselves instead of fighting them
CTuttle @ 50
multiple choice of fill in the blank?!?
TRex @ 35
I’ve always thought of it as jazz because of the instrumentation. Labels don’t matter so much when the music is this good.
Sounds like the same trumpet player that was on “Swiss Movement,” Benny Bailey.
The story (perhaps apocryphal) is that Les McCann and Eddie Harris had never played together — not even a sound check — before they walked on stage at Montreux to play the set that was recorded and released as “Swiss Movement.” They were literally making it up as they went along.
TRex @ 28
Hi Trex what was with that bimbo at the end of the last thread?
I see from the links out of the YouTube clip that Taylor Hicks from “American Idol” has been doing “Compared to What”.
I could have gone a lifetime without knowing that. Les McCann & Eddie Harris laid down the definitive version that night in Montreux.
Something about the way Eddie Harris sings the word, “GOD-dammit!” in the YouTube selection above conveys exactly how I feel about the US government right now.
Suzanne @ 52

Suzanne @ 45
Yeah, the vibe this week has been stressful. The events get us down, and we start taking it out on each other. I’ve found myself getting off the tubes quite early some nights because I’d rather not deal with it.
And it’s no ones fault. Hell, if we didn’t have this nightly snarkfest it would be a lot worse!
Suzanne @ 45
People were really grumpy this morning before i went into work at the pharmacy. Then i couldn’t keep up with the evening posts becuase of my DJ shift. But things were really off key last night becuase of that ongoing row. *sighs*

…and now his mercs are selling arms to the teruhrists
http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/…..index.html
Blackwater is now being investigated for supplying weapons to insurgents in Iraq (although probably only for as long as the AUSA in charge of the investigation still has his or her job)… The rethugs’ private army is now selling smuggled arms to the very people who are, presumably, shooting at our (real) soldiers. Sorry to keep on bringing this up, but this really really really really has me steamed.
….the theocon private army that donates millions in campaign contributions to shrubco and other leading rethugs is arming the enemy. now if this isn’t the very definition of treason, I don’t know what is
Steve-AR @ 59

Do we get the Mukasey connection yet?
Keeping Gonzo in mind, who would you appoint to the AG job if you wanted to shove Giuliani into the White House next year?
Who LIKES the newly appointed Republican thugs who replaced the nine fired US attorneys, (they still have those jobs, BTW)?
Who’s son is employed at Giuliani’s law firm?
Yes, that’s right. Mukasey. Gonzo set the precedent. Mukasey has to just rinse and repeat.
Heads up, y’all.
twȝk @ 71
to perpetuating the war… we can justify our continued presence in Iraq by prolonging the insurgency by providing them with weapons, all while benefiting the bottom-line of shrub’s very own private army/theocon buddy campaign contributors. Me, too. Until Geiger comes back, here’s a good substitute I’ve found…
It took some fairly serious cojones for Branford Marsalis to record a complete version of “A Love Supreme.” Unfortunately, this clip cuts out about two seconds before he blows the roof off the joint. But this is great stuff. Joey Calderazzo, the pianist on this clip, is one of my very favorite contemporary jazz pianists.

Gonzo pressured Iglesias in New Mexico to indict a Democratic candidate right before the 2006 election to ruin his chance of being elected. Remember? That’s why Iglesias was fired.
There were plenty of other “voter caging”, “voter suppression” etc. etc. campaigns waged by Republican thugs with Alberto’s blessing. So Gonzo quits, but the Republican vote-rigging machine he established is alive and well.
Fast forward to NOW. The new AG will be Mukasey, a longtime friend and business partner of Giuliani. Come next election, Mukasey will be the “decider” in “voter fraud” cases pursued by US attorneys nationwide, whether to purge Democratic or Republican “fraudulent” votes like they did in Arkansas in 2006. If Giuliani is losing in Arkansas in 2008, the local US Attorney can purge “fraudulent votes” from the roles by the tens of thousands to swing the state back to Giuliani, for example.
Mukasey will be accountable to no one (executive privilege and all that, as defined by Gonzo and Bush). Mukasey is curently on Giuliani’s payroll as legal adviser. Mukasey’s son is employed at Giuliani’s law firm. Why WOULDN’T Mukasey favor Giuliani in next year’s election?
The fix is in. Democrats are so afraid of a Bush crony as AG that they forget Giuliani is running in the NEXT election, not Bush.
Nite WA, nite burns… sweet dreeams.

Airport security procedures are at least 17 different kinds of stupid and silly — but if you want to fly, you must comply. As a frequent business traveler (about 60,000 miles so far this year, through 14 different airports), I just wish the rules would be the f**king same at every airport. It’s the arbitrariness of it that makes me want to scream every time I have to take off my shoes.
Good night TRex.

I really do not see how they can gather that info on travelers unless they inventory the checked bags or video the bags going through TSA. Well the 6 Greek cookbooks, two the same because I brought one back for Christy. Big threat that was. To me it seems like a lot of crap being stored to find that needle AND we all know how well BushCo did when those needles even pointed out like the Phoenix Memo.

Although Governor Palin has committed herself to finishing her term (she was elected in 2006), the temptation might be too great at this point. She’s the most popular governor in the country by at least ten points.

Kirk and Al are two of my favorite FDL co-commentors. May I humbly request that someone, preferrably Jane or Christy, intervene in the tragic misunderstanding. These guys are on the same side.
More specifically, they brought a great deal of relevant and detailed expertise to late and late-late night discussions. I would miss them horribly if they did not return.

Both Alfred and Mitch are in situations where external pressures might tell them to GTFOH (get the fuck out of here)…

IMHO, it’ll require supportive intervention by someone with some level of official credibility, but I hear you that this is somehthing that neither Jane nor Christy needs to be involved in — they’ve both got more than enough on their plates. Still, IMHO, it would be a tragedy to lose their input.

Governor Palin’s complete statement regarding Sen. Ted Stevens, plus some comments from the Anchorage Daily News political blog:
“Right now, Alaskans aren’t hearing anything,” Palin said, adding that she and many of the state’s residents are willing to give Stevens more leeway than most people because of the Republican senator’s long service to Alaska.
“But not hearing anything in terms of information that can be shared regarding the senator’s innocence is kind of frustrating for Alaskans,” Palin said. “Alaskans are getting more anxious to hear any information that he can provide regarding his innocence.”
Another canadian view on the dollar:
ET- well, if you have creds with Mitch (and I think you do) just tell him to back the fuck off on pushing the baseball comments. He really does not get “FDL nuance” when it comes to the baseball comments. Like, what? This is so important to him that we should just not challenge? Nope, sorry. On CSPAN, Reporting on the Iraq War
Michael Gordon (NYT) wondering what everyone is fussing about, and thinks he can see Iraq just fine from his embedded tours as “Chief Military Correspondent”. Thinks embedding is just peachy.
(Responding to assertion that embedded reporters “hold back”).
I can see how he got a job– he can tell nice anecdotes– but how the heck did he become the NYT “chief” military correspondent? Like, does he have actual qualifications? Does he actually know what journalism is? Like, fact checking, and multi-sourcing and stuff?

I am a little miffed, but that is the price one pays for spirited political debate. Naturally, I think anyone who disagrees with me is wrong: That’s what it means to believe in something. But I don’t take this stuff personally when it comes to I/P. And when people say things I don’t believe it, I discuss it and have even changed my mind. But it also gives me a chance to try to change theirs. If the price for this opportunity is occassionally feeling miffed, it is well worth it.
Truth to tell, I am more miffed that the Yanks lost in the 15th inning, but I guess I should back way the fuck off, sharing with anyone insights into my world.

I don’t have to tell people here what an ecological disaster mining can be, but this is expecially risky, to hear the opponents tell it. (I am trying to report in the most neutral terms possible.)
Yesterday there was accusations of bribery relating to approving the mine. Probably, ET is more up on the details.

From Amazon about the project in ‘69, Montreaux, Switzerland . . .
“Amazon.com . . .
This memorable impromptu session arose at the 1969 Montreux festival when tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Bailey joined Les McCann’s working trio.
McCann’s regular rhythm section of Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Donald Dean on drums provides rock-solid support for some strongly felt and entertaining music. Harris’s light-toned but expressive horn shines on his own “Cold Duck Soup” and McCann’s “Kathleen’s Theme,” while the whole band rocks on “You Got It in Your Soulness.” McCann’s elemental voice and piano gives new life to the soul classic “Compared to What,” while the underrated Bailey, more frequently heard in mainstream jazz settings, brings a brassy soulfulness of his own to the proceedings. –Stuart Broomer
This was epic then, and still is. Impromptu, and two years later, I got to hear it with Les And Eddie, in toto.
Wow. And at the time, I was a DIE hearted fan of old SF sounds, that were fading fast. QMS and such. Butterfield Band was long gone, although Amos Garrett and Geoff Mulduar were good in the new Paul stuff at the time (One More Heartache) . . .

They started developing oil here in the early 60s, in Cook Inlet, but the big jump was the opening of the Prudhoe Bay oilfields in 1977. I was a member of the first group to file a lawsuit against the building of the pipeline and Valdez terminal – the Cordova District Fisheries Union – during the time of the Jackson Amendment, which opened construction, because of a so-called “National Emergency.” BTW, that amendment was the first national emergency legislation which contained language which could be viewed as Islamophobic. Some of Sen. Henry Jackson’s staffers who helped craft the legislation and push it through later became neocon icons.

Oil development has brought more economic stability to Alaska than had existed before. It is still more “boom and bust” up here than most parts of the USA, but, especially in Southcentral Alaska where I live, the economy relies heavily on jobs provided by people who work the industry. The GOP has dominated politics here for a long, long time. Up until these recent scandals, people trusted their machine as being representative of what they obtained financially.
That is changing. Alaskans are running out of natural gas in the upper Cook Inlet fields close to the greatest population density. We want to continue to get natural gas, even though it has more than doubled in price this past year. But the reigning GOP leadership – that doesn’t include the GOP governor who is an insurgent – are two generations behind in figuring out where energy production and distribution goes next. At the same time, these fossil fuel dinosaurs are getting caught in stings which are resonating across the political spectrum.
I have no idea where things will next go.

The Iraq war costs $12 billion a month when CIA expenses and Embassy costs are added in. Cumulative costs through 2008 pass the 600 billion mark which is more than the Korean war cost.

The Vietnam war cost 650 billion but given how badly things are going in Iraq I’m sure we will pass that last 50 billion to tie or exceed the cost of the Vietnam war

From Sacto, yes, that’s the word. I’m pretty sure Teddy San Fran has it too . . if not WAY before THIS post . . .
I’d like to see Bonds get 3,000 hits.
He’s in the hall any way you want to script it, like it or not. I’d LIKE to see him go with that hit mark, as well . . .
There were a couple of seasons back there, when he was IMPOSSIBLE to get out.
Then they started walking him.
And, despite a weak arm, he WAS at times a Gold Glove Fielder.
And he’s worked his ass off all his life to be a better player . . . like Jerry Rice did. All the rest of the issues pale for me, compared to his desire. He had desire.
That’s what motivated Ty Cobb and his nasty, that’s what motivated The Babe.
And don’t GET me started about the GREATEST hitter in all of baseball, Teddy BallGame. HE had desire, too.
Desire. And the discipline to transcend mere mortals of life and the games we play.
Where is that desire in our erected officials, other than in their wallets or in public bathroom stalls, or with rented sex professionals?
And with that, I tie it up, and say, Thanks FDL, Thanks Fellow Ranters/Rager’s, and especially, Thanks Suz, cus YOU get to see most of my insanity . . . and you treat it for what it is . . ;-)

If the war costs 600 billion thats $600,000,000,000 that money has to be paid for.
The American population right now according to the web site provided in the link said our population is at that time 302,938,097 people http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html
Divide 302,938,097 into $600,000,000,000 and you get the TAX Bush will have stuck every man women and child with the answer I got was $1,980.60 please feel free to check my work I barely passed math.

What we get is a “Return on Success” my question is will the return on success cover the money cost of the war? I don’t think it will.
Now as a fellow bleeding heart liberal I don’t want any war, but thats me. Its the GOP I’m trying to convince in an argument they understand MONEY.
After all the American people are angry they won’t accept new taxes for a failed war. But I’m pretty sure they would favor a huge tax on rich people.
I’m sure they would support Nationalization of the Big Oil companies to squeeze them of every drop of profit to pay for the war they supported.
I’m sure the American people would favor a tax on the Big Media companies TV,Radio, print etc that supported this war even if a few of them go bankrupt.
People and companies guilty of war profitteering should have all their corporate and personal assets siezed ie Halibutron and the Carlyle group.
The political backlash from another war begun on false pretenses that we loose after so much effort will be huge especially if Bush keeps neglecting the economy and devaluing the Dollar.

Wigwam @ 345 The Saudis might unlink their money from ours Kuwait already did in May and the United Arab Emirates may be next.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com…..y/Business
Now what happens if the Arabs start pricing oil in Euros after they unlink their money from ours? If that happens then the price of oil goes up if the Euroe goes up compared to the Dollar, and/or the price of oil goes up. We would then have two independent variables to deal with that could raise oil prices.
I wonder if this is what the Saudis are ussing to blackmail Bush into keeping troops in Iraq and prevent Iran from taking over? Bush has always treated the Saudis with a surprising amount of respect consideing how many of them were on planes on 9/11.

Oh wait I don’t believe in Voudoo Economics or that bad luck can touch me!

morning raven. quiet here.
hey raven!
I posted this earlier this eve for TRex, but you might be interested as well.
water supply in Atlanta:

Not new news but the Hopi are having water troubles.
Valley Girl @ 366
Yea, mrs raven is a fanatic gardener and she is really bummed on this drought. We are going to try to capture bath water and such.
I saw the tv news again they are all saying how the Democrats gave up but the Left is pushing the Dems so hard to the left that they can’t make a comprimise with the GOP to end the war.
70% of the people want to end the war you MSM hacks! We are the center Heck we are the majority. Its the right wing 30%ers and Bush who are pushing the GOP not to comprimise!
Lets define some terms for the MSM 70% is a majority it is more than 51% which is the bare minium needed to be a majority. 70% is the center why because 70% is more than 66% or 2/3 which is the majority that Congress needs to override a Presidential veto.
So if the House and Senate were doing their jobs and expressing the will of the people in the same proportion that voters do about ending the war the war would be over.
Considering that the war is the most important issue to the majority of voters and has been for months what are they waiting for?
http://www.ecogeek.org/content/view/874 This device might work to get you water it seems simple to build.
Morning all. Since my house is on the market, I have been trying to water weekly on Sat. before 10. After hearing about Lake Lanier, I decided to forgo that. Somehow I would rather have water for drinking and bathing.
things come undone @ 369
But isn’t that what the DLC is for? To lead the party to the center?
JPL @ 371
Athens has a total ban.
To day is onewebday.
Ola, Pups.
twȝk @ 374
Looks like fun if your in NYC
tw3k @ 372 The center has moved Left back when Bill Clinton was in charge the DLC postions were the center but things change.
Sob! I used to be so proud to be a Lefty but today I’m a moderate I might as well buy a suit and tie (more sobs)!
The DLC has not changed with the times they are still competing with the GOP for the 30%er vote.
They are still trying to trianglate their policy postions between the left which is the new 70% majority postion and the 30% hard core Bush vote. Why because they assume they will get the lefty vote because we have no alternative and they hope to get the independent vote. Now granted this plan worked for Bill last time.
The problem is the country is polarized around the big issues now, so there are not many independents. The country is very motivated and interested in the issues which results in there not being to many independents.
We just have to work harder to educate our people about DLC postions on issues. The DLC is GOP lite!

What’s up you old goat!
Good morning pups!

EG, word.
morning Egregious
Raven — if I wanted to start the morning with insults, I’d still be married to the first wife.
And you’re a fine one to talk, bro — I believe you’re a couple months older than me.
Just had a little thunder shower up here. Hope you GA-folks get some relief soon.
retirin’ in five @ 382
Just wanted to see if you were awake! I think some folks have some kind of fancy “auto poster”. Our shot is weak here and there is zip in site. .
Morning Egregious.
Need more coffee before I’m fully awake. Mornin’ EG.
retirin’ in five @ 385
Our bakery doesn’t open til 7, I’ll load the critter in the truck and head up there to see what the farmers marketeers have today.
Good morning, pups. The Times has Gail Collins (who’s managed not to be odious today, so she’s not TOMC) writing on women and civil rights, and Bob Herbert writing on the California plan to redistribute electoral votes. He calls it poisonous.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got banana bread just out of the oven. Hold out your cup, retirin’ in five… Do you take cream or sugar? We’ve had rain the last two days, so my jasmine is happy. I don’t know if it’s covering the rest of the state, but we’re heaving sighs of relief.
Marion in Savannah @ 387
Not one drop here in Athens for a week. Do you have soy milk and splenda?
Thanks Marion. Black.
things come undone @ 377
I had thought that Bill had moved the country right. I was more willing to take to a centrist view at that time and have always avoided politics like the plague. i’ve never been good at politics, tired to avoid, don’t really understand it, sob! with you, etc.
Taking more time to view the landscape I really disagree with DLC and I think their GOP lite stance is detrimental to democrats. I dunno. What ever the hell they are doing it makes no sense to me.
raven @ 383
707! I’ve thought that myself.
Raven, I couldn’t live without Splenda! No soy milk, though. Sorry…
More Cowbell
Marion in Savannah @ 392
NP, I read this horrible article about “Big Soy” in the Utne Reader. NOTHING is good!
Hey raven, things, JPL, retirin, and oh my is that banana bread? Thanks Marion. Yo twȝk. Waving hi to mack.
Confessing ignorance here — where do you pups find that little square box in tw-square-k’s name?
tw3k @ 390 I agree Bill took us further right on a lot of issues his idea of trianglation between the left and right to get middle of the road independents was a Right Triangle.
Now stop being modest about not understanding politics we all come here to listen and learn from each other as well as talk.
You ask good questions and bring up interesting points the desire to learn and understand what you don’t know instead of assuming that you already know everything is what makes for a good commentor and President.
“70% of the people want to end the war you MSM hacks! We are the center Heck we are the majority. Its the right wing 30%ers and Bush who are pushing the GOP not to comprimise!

WOW! A mathematical genius. The FACT is 100% of the people want to end the war, the problem you have is how many want to end it by winning and how many want to end if by surrendering.
Polls are not elections and this is not a pure democracy. The Left’s problem is they want to win politically by calling people names, tearing down their character, claiming their motives are bad, etc. etc.
I have yet to hear a leftist make a rational argument for their position on just picking up and leaving the country. I’ve heard them tell me Bush lies, Petreaus is a traitor, Cheney bathes in crude oil, etc. etc.
The fact is Bush got the votes for the war resolution without attacking any Americans, the Democrats have not been able to do that because they alienate any republicans who may want to sympathize with their position and come to a workable agreement. The war resolution pass with over 70 votes, therefore it couldn’t be filibustered, the Democrats have not even attempted to mount a similar campaign to get the votes to rescind the war resolution.
Simple fact is, they don’t want to, as long as the war goes on, americans die, the public wants it to end and they elect more Democrats, that’s the democrat goal, they could care less about actually stopping the war. let alone defeating the enemy.
egregious @ 395
Hi EG!
And thanks for the reads Marion.

Any words of wisdom for a soon to be single person? It’s gonna be strange after being in this for 32 years. It’s amicable, all the kids are grown. Sigh.
Just look at what the Democrats have actually done since taking office, not what they have said. They approved funding for the surge, they approved manpower for the surge, they voted for Petreas who’s plan is the surge. They have more troops in Iraq then the Republican Congress ever had.
twȝk @ 399
Thanks. Much I don’t understand about this tubes thingie.
