Oh we're havin' some fun now:
A federal grand jury has subpoenaed House records connected to a one-time aide to former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay who has been caught up in the Jack Abramoff influence-peddling scandal.
The subpoena involving Ed Buckham was issued to the chief administrative officer of the House by a grand jury in Washington. Notice of the subpoena was read on the House floor Thursday in accordance with House rules, but it didn't mention Buckham's name.
A House official said that the subpoena sought payroll records and e-mails written by Buckham when he was DeLay's chief of staff. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the issue with reporters.
Memories:
The freak show may never get quite that good again, but we can hope.

Hey Jane
G’aaaaaah!
Good work, Mr Conscience!
FunnyDiva
I don’t know, I think it’s getting freakier every day. Maybe that’s just me tho.
Hi Jane!
Hi Al!
Been missing you all—have been dropping in when I could. Hope to be back a bit more regularly but hard to tell.
Mr. Abramoff, the gift that keeps on giving.
RevDeb, whenever you can drop in is great. I don’t think anybody’s unhappy with you for not being here…just unhappy you’re not able to spend more time here.
If that makes any sense!
FunnyDiva
Freaks? Just do an inventory of GOP freaks. It’s astonishing.
Bustednuckles @ 8
Mr. Abramoff, the gift that keeps on giving.
but so damn slowly. *s*
My kingdom for a real Attorney General.
Ralph Reed. Now there’s a freak.
I am so waiting for the Rethugs of California to get dragged down by Abramoff.
The Abramoff investigation had to get to DeLay eventually. I hate that it’s taken this long, but at least the wheels of justice are still turning.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 12
Amen to that!
AZ Matt @ 13
They keep digging into this thing, with Mr. K, and they’ll find Saudi Arabian complicity with the WH involving weapons deals (recall all the missing money and weapons for Iraq?), prolly drug trafficing, and more.
I keep waiting and praying it will all come out . . .
Then I wake up. ;-)
we here speak to one another
too easy
I didn’t know that Krugman had a new blog.
AZ Matt @ 15
No kidding. How come he keeps “slipping” under the radar??? He needs to come and visit with Waxman. Why has he not been “invited”…??? Huh?
“Rendition” the movie, coming to a theater near us soon. Also, “Lions for Lambs”…..
Activists all. Yes!
Love ya, RevDeb.
I sure hope Waxman has good security and that his people are kept up to date with his inquiries. He is one of our best.
Larue @16 you are right on target
Drip drip drip..thanks Jane
I just wish this were/was funny.
This is Tom Delay in his book “Do As I say, Not as I do”
snip
“When we [Republicans] came to power in 1994, most lobbying firms were headed by Democrats, staffed by Democrats and funded Democrat initiatives with millions of dollars. In fact, K-Street had actually been built by the Democrat majority over the previous fifty years or so. Then they had to deal with us. Picture it: a senior lobbyist would sit in my office. He was a liberal heading a liberal firm and he was giving thousands if not millions of dollars into liberal coffers. But he wanted access and cooperation from me even though I was in office to execute a conservative agenda. snip
Kathleen @ 24
And Ted Stevens on TAPE! he he he
Baby baby it’s a freak show on the
Housedance floor, baby.Sorry Jane, I couldn’t resist. *s*
When is DeLay’s trial down in Texas?
It seems like it’s taking forever.
Justice DeLayed is justice denied.
larue @ 16
If it were all to come out, that would have to reveal how complicit our “agents,” either military or CIA,or whatever, have been in allowing the reestablishment of poppy fields as far as the eye can see in Afghanistan once again. They seem to have picked right up where the Taliban forced them to quit becoming the worlds largest supplier of heroin. But we needed the compliance of the war lords to catch the Taliban, and the Taliban was their natural enemy anyway, so supplying heroin to as many junkies as you can create is a small price to pay, right? Just ask ‘em.
allan_in_upstate @ 29
Aren’t they too broke to take him to trial?
Abramoff/Reed/Delay/Cunningham/Feeney/Indian Casinos/Cruise Ships/Murder/Mariana Islands/Signatures Restaurant/Texas/ Gerrymandering/K Street…It goes on forever. The scandal reached far and wide and lasted for years with very little fanfare.
What’s on Yahoo News in bold font? Democrats 60 million dollar fundraising scandal.
ccmask @ 31
Nope, that’s the excuse they’re using for Doolittle and Lewis in Cali…!!!
For those who didn’t see it, Keith’s Special Comment is up on C&L now.
Thought he was going to pop his stitches.
ccmask @ 31
You are talking about Texas (the state I love)being run by cronies…It will take forever, if ever.
It all sounds so good, but it’s going to take a public hanging to lift me out of my funk after the last couple of day’s votes.
It’s like Christie has said over and over, this is going to be a long hard slog. I just wish it weren’t so long and so sloggy.
Night all. Things always seem better after a full sleep.
OT…but did anyone see Rather on Larry King?….I don’t know about you guys but Rather looked very secure and bold…..I think he has something on Chimpy and the thugs. Everythime I have seen him lately on tweety etc he was always fumbling, looking uncomfortable, tonight his body language was different…If you get a chance check out Mapes’s blog at HuffPost…
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....65257.html
Franco @ 36
Contrast that with Chimpy’s body language in today’s presser. KO was showing snips of it and the man seemed to be drunk or on drugs or downright clinically depressed.
An impotent weasel with all the power in the world at his fingertips. How scary is that?
Someone is suggesting I might want to go for moonlight swim before bed. And sooo…
we leave you all with this. Sweet dreams.

RevDeb @ 34
Thank you. Been waiting for that.
btw, you were right about Scahill’s misquoted comment on Blackwater liability — I added a (sic) to the post yesterday.
Also, Nice to hear from you.
hackworth @ 32
I want all those 750,000 emails that Sen. McCain got during his investigations of the Interior Dept. Thar’s gold in them thar hills!

From Palestinian occupied territories. Interview with Kathleen and Bill Christison (retired CIA analyst) who have written a great deal about this issue at Counterpunch
Crossing the line
http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article8997.shtml
This is an important interview with people who really know this issue. The interview is about 5 minutes into the report
—————————————————
This is Kathleen Christison’s latest article at Counterpunch about why Americans ignore this critical issue.
Justice Forgotten
Whatever Happened to Palestine?
By KATHLEEN CHRISTISON
http://www.counterpunch.org/
But not in America. Despite disgust in Ireland, boycotts in England, detestation around the world over Israel’s U.S.-financed oppression of another people, the peace community and the anti-war movement in the U.S. are unfazed. Gross injustice to the Palestinians raises little concern among those concentrated on the urgent problem in Iraq. Yet the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, specifically the dire situation of the Palestinians, is now, and has been since well before Iraq became urgent, the central issue in Middle East politics, the volatile center of the most volatile region in the world. It forms the basis for the Arab people’s strongest grievance — a grievance against Israel as perpetrator, against the U.S. as Israel’s armorer and benefactor, against the Arab state leaders who have failed to help or stand up for the Palestinians. The anti-war movement ignores the most explosive issue, the one underlying all others, when it turns its back on the Palestinians and ignores Israel’s increasingly brutal treatment. By looking away from Palestine, it is looking away from justice toward a false, at best incomplete peace.
Kathleen Christison is a former CIA political analyst and has worked on Middle East issues for 30 years. She is the author of Perceptions of Palestine and The Wound of Dispossession. She can be reached at kathy.bill.christison@comcast.net
Franco @ 36
He’s got somethin’ for sure. But…he may settle. He said that if there is a settlement, the money will go towards certain organizations. The problem is, if you settle, you are never, ever, ever allowed to speak about the “evidence” or the case. This is the problem. Maybe Congress should call him and others up to speak about the “evidence”, before there is a monetary settlement. Is this possible???
Kansas military cemetery has no more room. So while Chimpy and the wimpy dems are chastising 3 million plus patriotic activist souls over an ad, there is no more room to bury the dead soldiers in Kansas.
Whose priorities are f*cked up?
TheOtherWA @ 14
Patience can be a delicious main course, best served with a nice cabernet right before the election in ‘08.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 38
G’nite, Lovebirds!!!
Franco @ 35
thanks. i’ve been wondering if it wasn’t that Rather has something on his bosses (who after all, are who he is sueing).
The interview with Bill and Kathleen Christison is not upbeat. Bill thinks that the Bush administration will absolutely attack Iran, and the only way to stop them is to Impeach them. Worth the listen.

RevDeb @ 42
No kidding.
LS @ 35
Texas is tough to figure out. The Dems ran the table with judges in Dallas County last time around though, something like 70 judge seats
Cozumel @ 48
The Bugman had a little payback moment.
Bill Christison 79 just said “that he is ashamed that he ever served the US government” due to how cruel our nation has become.
Is this OT? Sen. Dodd on the “debate” just now,
“We Democrats were elected to end the war.”
Scarecrow @ 39
I don’t much like doing quick hit comments and then having to leave threads for work, but it is what it is.
Thanks for setting me and the record straight.
Nice seeing you doing what you are doing so well. And this morning’s South Pacific was artful. I’ve used that song on several occasions in sermons.
And you’ve got mail ;-)
Kathleen @ 47
So Kathleen, I have to ask– are you Kathleen Christison? Of course I wouldn’t want you to out yourself– if you are Kathleen Christison but you don’t want to reveal your identity, just say “no comment”.
tejanarusa @ 51
Apparently the only one that got the memo.

Remember when Dubai was forced to relinquish control of US Port Operations? Whew, what a relief, a national security threat thwarted. Well, now they’d done better heh, heh.
“Nasdaq and Borse Dubai struck a complicated deal on Thursday in which Dubai gets Nasdaq’s stake in the London Stock Exchange (LSE.L: Quote, Profile , Research) and buys 20 percent of Nasdaq itself”
http://investing.reuters.co.uk.....-OISBN.XML
The deal gives Borse Dubai 19.99 percent of US-based Nasdaq and 28 percent of the London Stock Exchange…Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd called for a “careful review” of the Dubai/Nasdaq transaction to ensure there are no national security implications.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20.....3ObTsUewgF
But oure fearless leader in Congress Madame Speaker Nancy Pelosi believes everything is hunky dory and a-ok: “I think it is a quite different issue than the ports issue. That was a security issue; this is a marketplace issue,” she said.
Tell me it ain’t so Nancy, that you think National Security is just about borders, ports, and military. And that the “marketplace” has nothing to do with the financial security of the US economy. Tell me it ain’t so.
Kathleen @ 52
I only see comments up to 55. I guess I’m just not seeing Bill C. Our nation is not cruel, but those that enslave the nation are. JMHO
Bustednuckles @ 54
The post-it note fell behind somebody’s desk.
Bustednuckles @ 50
The thing is though, nobody knows who judges are so it’s pretty much a party vote in that instance
LS @ 49
Forgot to mention -
First sight on entering my supermarket yesterday:
sign on easel, with photograph of painfully young man in camo and cap:
In memoriam
Javier “Nino” Gutierrez.
Killed Sept. 5 2007 in Iraq.
continued w/ a description of the young man who had a menial job behind the scenes in the store and belonged to the Reserves. Made me want to cry. But I was proud of HEB for putting that out right in front of everyone.
(and truth in advertising, I’m not sure today of the last name, but the sentiment is accurate)
This summer and fall it seems there’s at least one kia per week here in the San Antonio area. So, Gen. Petraeus, tell me again how much better it’s going. How many more like Nino?
Riesz Fischer @ 53
Hmmm… Inquiring minds…! Kathleen, I agree it was the root cause of much antagonism against the US, and, that the Palestinians have been screwed from day one! But, the blame also resides with middle eastern leaders failure to act on their plight!!!
ccmask @ 31
It’s a local case, not a federal one.
And Ronnie Earle doesn’t answer to
AbuMukasey.I don’t know. Certainly our culture could be accused of cruelty, or callousness at least. Today in the mail catalogs came, one for furnishings - the holiday theme, picturing long tables full of abundance, opulence, apples and fruit heaped in bowls, bottles of wine in racks, the time of feasting. Enjoy!
How can one enjoy? How can one feel fine about food heaped up for one holiday meal? About wine glasses that cost more than some people make in a week or a month? It seems depraved to me. A kind of sickening piggery.
allan_in_upstate @ 62
But, it is Abu Mukasey’s DoJ saying their too broke to pursue Doolittle and Lewis…
Kathleen @ 48
Are you saying that you are Kathleen C.???
ccmask @ 18
Wonderful that krugman has a blog. How do you access the comments? I see how to add a comment, just not how to read them…
Reminding everyone that the Big Dog is on the Daily Show tonite.
RockPaperScizzors @ 58
Pelosi is smart enough to know that she’s peddling snake oil. She thinks that the American public are fools. She may be right.
Dubai needs to diversify its portfolio. One day they will have sold every last drop. But that ain’t our problem is it?
Loo Hoo. @ 66
He speaks truth to power… I bookmarked it and will read it!!!
Loo Hoo. @ 68
I don’t know LooHoo. I can’t see them either. But I did notice this:
We have ended TimesSelect. All of our Op-Ed and news columns are now available free of charge. Additionally, The New York Times Archive is available free back to 1987.
Jane: I love you. You’re amazing. Christie, too. And the rest. But, back to the topic.
A great Canadian songwriter, Bruce Cockburn, once wrote, “How come History takes so long/When you’re waiting for a Miracle?”
Never a truer word was spoke! May Buckham hand over DeLay, and may DeLay hand over anyone and everyone.
hackworth @ 67
our problem is that if we don’t let them buy our stuff with their dollars, they’re not going to want to let us buy their oil with out dollars.
rock. hard place.
I’ll bet that once you sign in you can see the comments. But there’s this:
reminder: Once your comment is published, it can be found in search results on Web sites like Google and Yahoo. A New York Times reporter may occasionally use the e-mail address you have listed in our Member Center for a follow-up interview. For more information, please see our Privacy Policy.
RockPaperScizzors @ 58
Probably intimately connected to this. Basically, the Saudi’s have refused to drop their interest rates to match ours (as they always have in the past). Meaning less Saudi money will get invested here - more will stay there. So the whole deal Reagan started - “OK, we pay more for oil, but you invest your profits here” - is ending. So the dollar slides further and further.
Now a dirt cheap dollar should be good for tourism. But DHS has ruled that out.
Folks, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
Canuck Stuck in Muck @ 71
That shall be sweet news indeed! Which province are you from?
Can’t say we haven’t been warned.
RockPaperScizzors @ 58
Tell us all, Nancy.
Late yesterday I found that the Center for American Progress had finally put up the transcripts for that program I watched a few weeks ago called “FISA: Safeguarding Both Security and Freedom” Checks and Balances. I would like to post this clip just as an example of why I was so impressed with the show:
The above was a quote from:
‘Nuff said.
And bush said no new taxes 18 times today..Which means war profiteers won’t be paying their share nor will health care funding help anyone other than insurance companies, imo.
I’m not Blogwhoring here, but for our fine people that lurk and maybe even some of our regulars,
if you find a comment interesting, and you look up to the name of the commenter and see a line under their name, it means they have a website. The same is true if you see a blue ‘F’, that means they have a Facebook page. Just click on the underlined name or the blue “F’ and it will take you there.
ccmask @ 75
I left a comment early this morning, and am interested in seeing other comments. No luck…
Ann in AZ @ 30
We need to decide who’s gonna be Ollie, Fawn, Freeway Ricky and the rest of the cast . . ;-)
I HATE rerun’s in life . . .
How does one impeach anyone to stop a war if those that can impeach, refuse to impeach????
Eureka Springs @ 80
“Bush said” doesn’t have much if any credibility anymore. Just sayin’ ; )

Breaking From Al Da Spook:
Gates Wants Independent Inquiry Into Minot Nuclear Weapons Lapse.
The money quote of the articles is that “at least six” nuclear weapons were sent to Barksdale inappropriately. Ouch.
And yes, this is moonie stuff but I’ve found some of it quite reliable on military matters.
Oh, and ArmsControlWonk has just claimed he has “rock solid proof” the Syrian attack by the Israeli fighters was to take out a shipment of conventionally armed SCUDS. I have withdrawn my last Ratiocinations post to absorb his info. I still stand by my theory for now, though. I’ll repost when I have The Ducks in Teh Row.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled screwing by Teh Democrats. Oh and they want you to pay them for doing it. Isn’t that special?
Wanna have breakfast with Turdblossom?

If I get lucky I might get to see a Trex post yet tonight.
jayt @ 87
I am very much hoping that someone here at the lake (TRex?????) will write about the Jena 6 very soon. Please.
RevDeb @ 34
KO 4 Prez!!!
Thank for sharing that . . . *G*
It was LOVELY!!!!
Seeing Bush this morning, my first thoughts involved trying to figure out whether he was hung-over, drugged, or just bored.
Then I realized that if I had seen any previous president looking like that, I’ve have wondered if he was sick, and just really needed to be in bed, hopefully with a doctor close at hand.
Then I was sad.
