Mr. Bush is, as he likes to say, a loving guy. But by golly the MoveOn.org ad criticizing Gen. David Petraeus has him madder than Larry Craig in a pay toilet.
When a “reporter” asked him a loaded question about the MoveOn ad (not mentioning, for example, that Petraeus wrote an op-ed in support of the Bush Iraq policy a few weeks before the 2004 election), Bush swung for the fences. But then again, he’s always been pretty good at T-Ball – and this was definitely teed up for him.
He slammed MoveOn, repeating language he used Wednesday in a meeting with right-wing columnists, saying that criticizing Petraeus is tantamount to attacking the entire US military, and expressing astonishment that leading Democrats have not attacked MoveOn as courageously as Bush has.
Before Democrats fall all over themselves to agree with a president whose trust and honesty rating from the American people is even lower than his IQ, let’s look at the real record of Bush’s cowardice when it comes to speaking out against attacks on military heroes:
- In the 2000 South Carolina primary, George W. Bush stood next to a man described as a “fringe” figure – a man who had attacked Bush’s own father – at a Bush rally. With Bush applauding him, the man said John McCain “abandoned” veterans. McCain, who was tortured in a North Vietnamese POW camp, was incensed. Five U.S. Senators who fought in Vietnam, including Democrats John Kerry, Max Cleland and Bob Kerrey, condemned the attack and called on Bush to repudiate it. When pressed on it at a debate hosted by CNN’s Larry King, Bush meekly muttered that he shouldn’t be held responsible for what others say. Even when he’s standing next to them at a Bush rally.
- In the 2002 campaign, draft dodger Saxby Chambliss ran an ad with pictures of Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, then said Sen. Max Cleland lacked courage. Max Cleland left three limbs in Vietnam as an Army captain. Mr. Bush’s political aide, Karl Rove, later refused to disavow the ad, saying, “President Bush and the White House don’t write the ads for Senate candidates.”
- Also in the 2002 campaign, the PAC for the Family Research Council, a close Bush ally, ran an ad in South Dakota that pictured Sen. Tom Daschle and Saddam Hussein. “What do Saddam Hussein and Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle have in common?” the ad asked. Apparently, they both opposed drilling in the Arctic wilderness. First, I had no idea that supporting drilling in the wilderness is a family values issue. Second, I have seen no reporting on the late Iraqi dictator’s position on Alaska drilling. But I do know Tom Daschle is an Air Force veteran. Mr. Bush never disavowed the smear.
- But perhaps the worst was what was done to John Kerry. Kerry earned five major medals in combat: the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts. And yet supporters of Bush and Cheney decided to smear his war record. The despicable, dishonest Swift Boat attacks alleged that Kerry fabricated reports that earned him the Bronze Star. The Swifties also suggested that Kerry’s wounds were insignificant – and that one was even self-inflicted. Kerry’s wounds were certainly more serious than Mr. Bush’s, who suffered a cut on his finger from popping a beer can while avoiding his duty in the Alabama National Guard. At the 2000 GOP convention, rich, white Republicans were photographed gleefully putting Band-Aids with purple hearts on their chubby cheeks. Mr. Bush refused to condemn the attack – blandly noting he didn’t like 527 groups generally – and later nominated one of the men who financed the smear to be Ambassador to Belgium.
Mr. Bush is a coward and a bully. He knows he’ll never be the kind of hero his father was. He knows he lacks the heroism of John Kerry or Max Cleland, so he overcompensates with bluster and bravado. In fact, he told bloggers recently that he wishes he were fighting in Iraq. The Washington Post’s Dan Froomkin reported that Bush told a blogger in Iraq that he’d like to be carrying a 50-pound pack and an M-16, but, “One, I’m too old to be out there. And, two, they’d notice me.”
So Mr. Bush is too old to fight in Iraq, and he was too rich and well-connected to fight in Vietnam. But he’s itchin’ for a fight with a progressive interest group. Does anyone believe he’d have the same outrage if a right-wing group were attacking war heroes? Of course not.
Bingo.

Jane! Three bullets to the forehead…!!!
cinco
bingo – #$??
#4 should read lol
Let me quote the man;
Thanks Jane!
Bull’s Eye. This sort of thinking is exactly what the Democrats should be doing. There is pretty much no lower blow to anyone who has ever served (IMO) than the campaign against Max Cleland.
hi jane – hows the new diet regimen working?? you look mahvelus ;o)
The GOP has their own internal food fight going with Dobson and Fred. Har har
HOOO-ahhhhh!!!
Excellent.
They smear anyone who gets in their way. I’m surprised we haven’t seen reports that Gen. Abizaid is a child molester yet.
And damn the Senate Dems for not pointing this out instead of going alone with that vote.
When WILL they learn – they have to take it to the mattresses with these thugs!
And don’t forget Pat Tillman’s family
What would it take to get the MSM to cover the points Jane makes about Bush being the last guy to defend anybodys military service?
Actually, apologies for nit-picking, it was 2004.
Maybe KO will discuss the death of Mandela by Hussein. . .and all the Mandelas who he offed.
bg @ 18
I’m awaitin’ that explanation.
CTuttle @ 4
As a Viet Nam sniper said a couple months back, you don’t get 3 close-grouped shots to the head unless the victim is lying down incapacitated.
Reason: You shoot and hit from a distance, and the head jerks violently.
No 3 close-grouped shots from a distance even on automatic.
Tillman was shot point blank while incapacitated.
Paul Begala makes a good point, but at the end of the day, he’s Hillary’s guy.
I want to live long enough to see George W. Bush forced to take responsibility for once in his horrid, miserable life for his many unseemly actions and provocations. And as for his mother and father? I have never seen a better example of bad parenting. They have loosed a monster on the world with this spoiled brat.
F*cking bingo.
And now, OT, I would like to introduce FDL to what I believe is the changing face of Republicanism.

Yale Loses Court Case over Military Recruiters
from CommonDreams.org
http://www.commondreams.org/ar…..9/20/3961/
NEW HAVEN, Connecticut -Yale Law School will end its policy of not working with military recruiters after a court ruling this week jeopardized about $300 million in federal funding, officials said Wednesday. Yale and other universities have objected to the Pentagon’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, which allows gay men and women to serve in the […]

OT –
It’s good to hear the reporter on Schuster’s version of the Tucker show call the JENA protest one of a matter of INJUSTICE.
Flat-out stated it — the truth, it’s so nice to hear every now and again.
And once again I missed the name of the reporter on the scene in Jena. So if anyone can fill me in, again I’ll be grateful (sorry, am not trying to be half-attentive, but the pupster barked her head off at a door-to-door sales person and I couldn’t hear and missed the graphic).
Bring…it…on!!!!
Pat Tillman, shot 3 times at close range in the forehead. His clothes and his diary..burned. The story, manipulated and changed by “someone” higher up when it was composed on the computer. His death, used to promote the illegal war that he knew was based on lies. Generals lied, the Administration lied, they covered up the truth and lied to the United States of America, in order to further their horrendous agenda.
Why doesn’t someone in Congress bring it up and say that it is the sense of the Congress that the truth of Pat Tillman’s death should be honored???? Whoever created those lies Betraysus!!
Chickensh**s.

On General Clark:
Heard him on Diane Rehm’s radio show earlier this week. There are archives at wamu.org
Sure sounded to me like he was rooting FOR a war with Iran! And soon too.
Punk. Instant karma has been waiting a long time.
Fortunately, his crap now works only on his brain-dead base. History’s verdict is already in.
Well there was also some dangerous work there with a razor blade and a bit of tricky business rollin’ up a hundred dollar bill.
If Bush wishes to serve we could point out that our troops have waited years to get bullet proof vests and armoured humvees from his polticaly connected corporate welfare friends.
Maybe if Bush and his base of economic elites had payed more taxes for the war we would not be losing it now.
Talk is cheap show the Army how much you care by giving them all the equipment and troops they needed before we invaded Iraq would have been an ACTION.
Now that Iraq is all messed up by inadequetely staffed and funded action Bush should swallow his pride and leave.
BigMitch –
Thank you!
Martin Savidge will be another person I keep my eye on to see if truth-telling is getting more traction these days.

The MoveOn ad has proved something of a hammer nailing the hypocrisy of all those involved with our Iraq policy. Petraeus is a Bush sockpuppet and the ad has wedded that image to him permanently. The yawling of Bush, Cheney, and the Republicans showed that it really struck a nerve. Their subsequent attempts to distract us from both their lack of any Iraq policy as well as 4 1/2 years of failures made big headway among the punditocracy but none among ordinary Americans. The painful effects of the ad, however, are that it showed that Congressional Democrats still refuse to stand up to or for anything, not the First Amendment, not their anti-war allies (60-70% of Americans), and not the much abused troops in the field.
The Democrats might learn from this (but of course they won’t) that the first step in not being taken for a sap is to stop acting like a sap.
I was re-reading Major General Smedley Butler’s writing today called “War is a Racket.” He wrote it after his experiences in WWI and what he saw developing on the world stage, which eventually ended up being WWII. Creepy stuff:
“The assassination of King Alexander of Jugoslavia [Yugoslavia] complicated matters. Jugoslavia and Hungary, long bitter enemies, were almost at each other’s throats. Italy was ready to jump in. But France was waiting. So was Czechoslovakia. All of them are looking ahead to war. Not the people – not those who fight and pay and die – only those who foment wars and remain safely at home to profit.”
“Herr Hitler, with his rearming Germany and his constant demands for more and more arms, is an equal if not greater menace to peace. France only recently increased the term of military service for its youth from a year to eighteen months.”
“Yes, they are getting ready for another war. Why shouldn’t they? It pays high dividends.
But what does it profit the men who are killed? What does it profit their mothers and sisters, their wives and their sweethearts? What does it profit their children?
What does it profit anyone except the very few to whom war means huge profits?
Yes, and what does it profit the nation?”
Oh if only decorated General Butler were around today. It’s all just the same old story. Maybe MoveOn could run some ads quoting Gen Butler, and Gen. Eisenhower, two Generals who actually fought and won in major wars unlike Gen Betrayus, and understood where the real battle is.
Perpetual war means perpetual profits if you’re in on the game. Terrorism will always exist. Hence, they created the “War on Terror” to ensure perpetual profits.
They must be stopped now. Politely pointing out that this is wrong and kills innocent people will not change their minds. In fact, politeness and playing by the rules will get you nowhere, as has been proven over and over again.
Drastic times call for drastic measures. NOW!
Bush is always trying to get a bump.
Why does the Declaration of Independence seem to be saying that people need to use violence at times like these? I’m just askin’, definitely not fomenting. But isn’t it curious?

Thank you for this explanation. I had heard that there was something mighty rotten in the fact that there three close-grouped shots.
However, I am quite an ignoramus when it comes to matters of gunshots, ballistics, and the like. Your explanation says it all, and should have been obvious to me from the beginning.
But then, from very early on I’ve suspected that Pat Tillman was flat-out murdered. To use one of my mom’s most somber expressions “this is a sin which CRIES OUT to heaven.”
May his murderers be brought to justice somehow!

Do not trust Begala. Remember his disdain for us dirty bloggers who have no idea what we’re talking about (don’t have time to find links). He’s just playing us just enough to keep us pacified. This has been proven ever since he came onto the scene in the early 90s as a Clinton lackey.
These people do not want the same things we want. They are not helpful to our causes. Don’t ever forget that.
Perhaps the Dems and the GOP ought to get together and decide on an amendment to the Constitution that confines us to a system of alternating presidencies. Eight years of Republicans and then eight years for the Democrats. And on and on.

Loo Hoo 67_Thanks for the link.
I support MoveOn and think Obama’s explaination is lame.
“The focus of the United States Senate should be on ending this war, not on criticizing newspaper advertisements. This amendment was a stunt designed only to score cheap political points while what we should be doing is focusing on the deadly serious challenge we face in Iraq. It’s precisely this kind of political game-playing that makes most Americans cynical about Washington’s ability to solve America’s problems. By not casting a vote, I registered my protest against this empty politics. I registered my views on the ad itself the day it appeared.
“All of us respect the service of General Petraeus and all of our brave men and women in uniform. The way to honor that service is to give them a mission that is responsible, not to vote on amendments like the Cornyn amendment while we continue to pursue the wrong policy in Iraq.”
What a fuck head. You want to be president you have to show some balls and leadership.

Understood. It’s just that I’ve spent years listening to friends and collegues, and now around the blogosphere, that when one of these fakes throws us a bone, so many say, “Hey, maybe they’re not so bad after all.” See this all the time here with Chris Matthews for instance. Then, these liars keep getting on TV or keeping their jobs since they appeal to the manfactured “centrists” that supposedly populate America.
This is the entire Clinton (both of them) strategy. Keep the base pacified just enough, while doing their masters’ bidding. Sounds conspiratorial I know, but really feel like it’s been proven recently by the actions of our Dem “leaders.” I don’t buy the arguments that they’re just getting beat at the game, or they’re just dumb. Most have been around D.C. for a long time….far too long.
OK, I think Bush is an idiot and the most inarticulate prez evah. I don’t like the guy and I think he looked pretty awful at the press conference. however…I think he meant to say that any Iraqi person who would be their version of Mandela is probably dead because Saddam would have taken care of any one so revolutionary. That would have made some semblance of sense. But it’s too much for the miscommunicator. He’s best when cocky and attacking straw men.
Don’t shoot me.

That is true. Some of the fundamentalists believe they are warriors for God and follow W, then when their kids or family members get killed in his wars, they literally term it, “getting deployed to heaven”….that is scary fanaticism. They said that several times during the DC March.
As I said on another post, Hillary may have done the right thing AND the politically smart thing by voting against condemning MoveOn.org. When they hit her for that vote — and they will — she can come back and make the following points:
1. The U.S. Senate is not the place to condemn free speech.
2. Betrayus is a name that the troops gave him.
3. Disrespect for generals who allow themselves to be used as props for Bush and his stupid fucking war … that’s on Bush, not me.
4. Respect for the troops? How did you vote on the Webb ammendment.
Hillary’s vote was a well-thought out “Bring it on!” and it had the added advantage of being the right thing.

Feldman has a nice new one up:
Jeffrey Feldman: Petraeus, Pasta and Propaganda
from Huff Po by Jeffrey Feldman
General Played Key Role In Feeding Murky Rhetoric About Iraq To Congress
Of all the dust and dirt the right-wing has kicked up in the last week in all their whining about a newspaper ad, a basic fact about General David Petraeus has been swept under the rug: the tortellini. Lobster tortellini to be exact.
In the weeks leading up to his testimony about the ’surge’ on Capital Hill, General Patraeus took part in an all out PR offensive that used fancy catered lunches and slick presentations to sell rhetoric about progress in Iraq to members of Congress. These fancy lunches took place in the green zone, were hosted by Ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, and featured Petraeus as the keynote presentation or star of the show.
In my mind, feeding members of Congress lobster tortellini in the middle of Iraq is a textbook example of–wait for it–politics. It is the very image of a man engaged in an effort to make things look better than they are.
This is not some obscure fact. Petraeus and the lobster tortellini were widely reported in the press and discussed all over progressive blogs.

I remember when I was seventeen, I decided to tell my dad that I smoked the weed, and that if the world leaders would too, that wars would end. He went on and on about how smoking anything (and I specifically remember carpet balls!) would be a bad thing. Five years later, he told me I was right. Wonder if he ever imbibed?

That is funny. I had the same conversation with my parents when I was 17, then…one night I came home late and my parents and my aunt and uncle were sitting around the coffee table with a plate, and on the plate was pot my mother had found in my drawer. They had it burning in a pile and were leaning over and sniffing it. They thought they were high, but really, it was all the drinks they had been drinking all night. That was one of the funniest sights I’ve ever seen.

Thanks to those who reminded me of two great pieces of music from my youth:
Volunteers
The Great Mandala
I sometimes listen to SKY FM’s internet radio station which features music from my youth when I’m doing “dance” exercises in the pool for therapy.
I’m struck more and more how authentic and creative and powerful all that music was.
And sadly, how perfectly it fits today — the same injustices, the same authoritarianism, the same allegiance to conformity which inspired the music then is now plaguing us today, even worse.
Where is the powerful music today? The powerful and deep creativity to move our souls? I know there are a couple of examples here and there, but nothing like the outpouring of talent and creativity back then.
Have the music corporations made certain such a “golden age” of passion and creativity and thinking outside the box of extablished “pop” music notions can never happen again?

For anyone who watched Bush live at the presser today…do you think all of that alcohol has come home to roost? I mean, it’s bad enough that we have “the evilest man on the planet” as our VP who has a pacemaker/defribulator, but I think it is also possible that we’ve got outselves a president who is suffering from dementia from long term alcohol abuse. I know he supposedly quit – though I have heard rumors that he’s hitting the sauce again – but he’d poisoned himself for years before that(and we won’t get into the nose issues) and that does have long term consequences.
Any thoughts?
George W. Bush is unable to speak the English language. Why does he bother?

Sadly, Democrats did fall all over themselves. All of them…except Feingold.
Laura Ingraham is a self absorbed snotty hideously revolting bitch and she is not even attractive. She might have been, but she is definitely turning very ugly and scary looking.
But that matters not. She is repulsive and hateful. And she comes off lie the rational calm Ann Coulter. I can’t stand her.
Give me a Jane, Christy, Rachel Maddow, Katrina van den Hueval any day or Garance.
This is the last gasp of the repukes. If there are ever elections again.. they are going the way of the dinosaurs IF the people come out to vote and these shenanigans are fire them up.
The Petreus dog and pony show tanked his support if only marginally.
These are their last throes.

Bush sure got the bottom of that leak, didn’t he? He took care of it, just like he said he would.
zen, sweetie!!!
Much love to you.
I too suffer from insomnia something fierce (pain doesn’t help either) — or is it something other than insomnia in your case?
After many days of not sleeping I finally collapsed last night and get 10 straight hours (and lots of stiffness from not turning during that coma-like state). Finally!
I hope you are not suffering much. I’ve missed you along with all the other beloved Firepups during the too lengthy times I’ve not been able to be here. It’s so good to see you at the Lake, I think of you often and include you in my prayers.
And you are a GREAT nurse. Your presence itself is healing, and that’s always a telling sign of a GREAT nurse.
Thanks for the post. I just sent MoveOn.org a donation. Heh.

Plus it’s just rude to call someone ruthless. That’s not the way to negotiate with someone, now is it! You just don’t understand how Warshington works, my friend.
(sorry for being a smartass, just getting so sick of hearing this kind of crap while the killing goes on and on with no end in sight.)

LS @ 134
Bet it can be backtracked to Mr. K and Abromoff . . . . ;-) $2.5 Billion in reconstruction money, missing, under HIS watch . . . .
As a major in the USAFR and a veteran, I DO call into question Petraeus’ ethics, honor, and patriotism. He is a self-serving moral coward. He is ONLY about trying desperately to save his military legacy. He OWNS the military debacle that is Iraq. It is ALL HIS. He cannot save it, he is the new Westmoreland. His legacy is a criminal military debacle in Iraq. Forever in history that is his place but he cannot face that so he must try and try and try to put off the inevitable ignoble end by spouting happy talk about how there is light at the end of the tunnel, that everything will come out smelling rosy any moment now.
Petraeus IS General Betray US. I say that as a Major, USAFR.
Suck that senate cowards.
